4 Tips for Tranquility

Ive been working lately on living a more calm, Zen lifestyle. It isnt always easy.

Do you sometimes feel like waiting in traffic, getting bombarded with overwhelming updates on the news, and tackling the to-do list at home and at work adds up to tension in your shoulders and a crazy look in your eyes? Me too. If I start feeling that way, I know I need to revisit these four life goalsthat will provide some peace.

Try these tips for tranquility to cut down on stress and add more calm and simplicity to your lifeand please share your own tips in the comments section below.

1. Spend quiet time in natural places.

Whether its a 10-minute morning walk or a weekend trip to a beautiful, secluded place, spending quiet time in a natural setting encourages a new outlook and slows the pace of life. Some of my favorite activities are camping, taking nature walks, and reading books on a blanket in the sunshine. Even if youre busy, make a little time for outdoor activities you love.

2. Connect with dirt.

We have a lot of screens (computer screens, TV screens), big stores, crowds, cubicles and highways in modern life. And weve lost something something that many people are trying to get back. If you dont already garden and you want to bring a new, peaceful, empowering activity into your life, grow something. It doesnt have to be a huge gardenjust start somewhere. A powerful sense of connection and fulfillment comes with getting your hands dirty and watching things grow. 3. Live simply.

The mentality that STUFF reigns supreme is so rampant that it can be difficult to get away from. But time after time, the happiest, calmest people I meet are those who live simple lives free of a lot of clutter and new! stuff. 4. Exercise.

Jumping on a bike isnt always the first thing that comes to mind when were feeling stressed or anxious. For many of us, its more tempting to grab a pint of ice cream and the remote control than to head to the bike trail. But before you open that freezer, consider this: Recent studies have found that people who exercise regularly arent just more physically fit than those who dont, theyre generally happier and less stressed, too.
