The term, "Bonsai" is derived from two Japanese words, "Bon", and "Sai". "Bon" means "tray". "Sai" means, "growing" or "planting".Many people are under the impression that Bonsai was invented by the Japanese.

Not true.

True, the Japanese developed bonsai into what we see today. However, the path leads back to China, where the first bonsai was grown. This Chinese art form was known as 'pon sai'. This method of art, bringing together beauty, truth and essence, in the form of the plant, container and earth, is described as, 'heaven and earth in one container', by the Japanese.

There is still pon sai in China, to this day, but it lacks the artistry, beauty and expertise of the Japanese developed bonsai. This art form demands infinite patience, imagination and care. Rare attributes in the frenetic pace and impatience of today, but well worth developing into one's character.

Japanese Zen Buddhism, was used as a basis to reform the rather ugly and somewhat tortuous pon sai, of the Chinese, into the forms of harmony and beauty of the Japanese bonsai, which we enjoy today. These miniature creations were first only to be found in their Buddhist monasteries, but later found favour with the Japanese ruling classes. Still later, ordinary lovers of this art form ensured its popularity to the present day.

Often, people think it refers only to a type of miniature tree, whereas it is a method of using quite a number of different trees and plants.

Meditation has been the subject of many scientific studies. Scientists are becoming more interested in the role of meditation in human health.

Why meditation?

Positive thinking can bring about health and wellness.

But what has that to do with meditation?

We all know that positive thinking brings health and wellness in life. Unfortunately, often times, we simply cannot stay positive, even though we very much want to, because our minds seem to be out of control. That is, our minds seem to be controlling us, instead of we controlling our minds.

Why does the human mind run rampant?

It is because we subconsciously give reins to our thoughts, and our thoughts affect our bodies, which produce biological and chemical changes that, in turn, affect our minds -- and thus creating a vicious cycle of ill-health.

Why do we give reins to our thoughts? Why do we let our thoughts control our minds? Why can't we have positive thinking all the time?

The truth of the matter is that we do not consciously let our thoughts do that. Simply, there are too many things happening around us. Subconsciously, our minds just jump back and forth between events and happenings. As a result, our minds become chaotic. A chaotic mind creates internal chaos and disharmony -- a setting for biological and chemical changes within the human body. These changes may adversely affect the body's functions, making them incoherent and dysfunctional.

Why meditation?

Meditation helps to stabilize a chaotic mind. When you meditate, your mind focuses only on the present moment to the exclusion of everything else in the past or in the future. Meditation is single-minded focus that brings calmness to a chaotic mind.

Meditation is an antidote to stress, which is an important agent in premature aging. Your body begins to age due to deterioration in your endocrine system (which is responsible for manufacturing hormones). Your human growth hormone (HGH)! keeps y ou healthy through repeated rejuvenation of your cells. In particular, your DHEA (dehydroeplandrosterone) is instrumental in delaying aging through controlling emotional and mental stress. Meditation gives your mind a meaningful break, just as restful sleep gives your body an opportunity to relax and to recover.

That meditation can contribute to anti-aging has been validated in a scientific study in which participants who regularly meditated had a significant increase of DHEA; in another study, those who meditated for more than 5 years were physiologically younger by more than 10 years than their chronological age; in yet another study published in "Neurobiology of Aging" meditation had "neuroprotective" benefits on the brain by increasing the brain's gray matters.

To sum up, meditation brings tranquility to a chaotic mind, thereby enabling us to control our thoughts, instead of the other way around. As an antidote to stress, meditation is anti-aging.

Often considered an art form, bonsai care can be a meditative and enjoyable activity for anyone. What is Bonsai?

Originally practiced in China over a thousand years ago, bonsai constituted the growing of a single tree in pots. Early specimens often resembled animals, dragons and birds. The Japanese adopted the art for in the 12th century by means of Zen Buddhism. First practiced only by monks the art form soon spread to include the aristocracy.

The term, bonsai, literally means tray planting or tree pot. The term specifically refers to the training and artistic vision applied to the trees. For the Japanese, bonsai care represented a fusion of ancient beliefs with the eastern philosophies of harmony between man and nature.

Caring for Your Bonsai

A fun and rewarding activity, bonsai care requires diligence and practice. As noted above, the species of tree may vary depending on personal taste. The type of care your bonsai will require depends on the tree species you choose to grow. You should follow the general growing guidelines outlined for this particular tree. To dwarf the plant to a workable size you may employ a number of techniques. The main methods used are use of a small ceramic pot, foliage pruning, root pruning and direct sunlight exposure.

Your individual bonsai care will determine the form that your tree will take. There are several different main styles of bonsai, which include formal upright, informal upright, slanting, cascade, windswept and forest. Remember this is not a strict list of styles; you may work with another, lesser-known style, or provide a variation on one of the main styles.

Growing Guidelines

One of the most important aspects of bonsai care is watering. Requirements will vary by species, bu! t it is important to note that regardless of the species of the tree you must be sure that your tree never dries out. Generally, you will need to water the tree when the surface soil appears dry.

You will not be required to immediately prune your bonsai upon purchase. However, this is a main point in any bonsai care, since pruning will help to bring the desired shape to your tree. You can accomplish most pruning by simply pinching the new growth between your thumb and forefinger.

Also be sure to consider lighting requirements and fertilization. As with watering, lighting will depend on the type of tree. Fertilization, utilizing a good balanced fertilizer, should be restricted to the growing season.

The Japanese tea ceremony is a traditional ritual influenced by Zen Buddhism in which green tea known as matcha is prepared and ceremoniously served by a skilled practitioner to a small group of guests in a tranquil setting such as a garden tea house. Chanoyu which means "hot water for tea" refers to a single ceremony that involves only tea, while the longer version known as Chaji "tea meeting" entails a full tea ceremony in which a light meal is also served, and can last up to four hours. Mastering the art of the tea ceremony includes years of study that can last a lifetime, as the student must be familiar with several interrelated disciplines such as flower arranging, calligraphy, ceramics, incense, and the proper technique for wearing kimono. Guests who participate in the ritual must also be aware of the proper conduct in regard to utilizing certain phrases and gestures required to maintain the integrity of the ceremony.

If tea is to be served in a tea house guests will initially be shown to a waiting room called a machiai, which is usually a separate structure such as a simple gazebo. After being summoned by the host they purify themselves by rinsing their mouths and hands with water from a small stone basin known as tsukubai, and then continue through the garden to the tea house. Removing their shoes they proceed through a small sliding door that is only thirty six inches high, thus symbolizing that all who enter are equal in stature irrespective of status or social position. The roomis not decorated save for a scroll painting called kakemono, which has been selected by the host and reveals the theme of the ceremony. The Buddhist scripture on the scroll is called bokuseki (ink traces) and is admired by each guest in turn before being seated seiza style on the tatami mat floor.

If a meal is not served the host will present each guest with small sweets eaten from special paper known as kaishi, which each person carries in a decorative wallet tucked in the breast of the! kimono. All utensils to be used in the ceremony such as tea bowl, tea scoop, and whisk, are ritualistically cleansed in the presence of the guests in a precise manner and order before being fastidiously arranged according to the ceremony being performed. Upon completion of cleaning and preparing the utensils, the host will place a carefully measured proportion of green tea powder in a bowl along with the appropriate amount of hot water, and then whisk the tea using a precise set of movements. Guests relax and enjoy the atmosphere of the simple surroundings and conversation is kept to a minimum. The host then serves the bowl to the guest of honor, bows are exchanged, and the bowl is raised to the host in a gesture of respect. The bowl in then rotated by the guest to avoid drinking from it's front, a sip is taken followed by a prescribed phrase, the bowl's rim is wiped and rotated back to its original position, and is then passed on to the next guest with a bow. The protocol is repeated until all guests have tasted the tea from the same bowl, and it is then returned to the host who rinses it. The scoop and tea container are then offered to the guests for examination, each item being treated with extreme care and reverence as they may be irreplaceable handmade antiques passed down for generations. The host then collects the utensils, and as the guests leave the tea house bows as a sign that the ceremony has officially come to an end.

Wonder. It's well, wonderful. What else could wonder be?

Actually, quite a bit. That's a big part of the reason why wonder is wonderful, and why I'm wishing that for you, and for me, next year will be filled with it.

I was inspired to strike this theme in my final blog post of 2012 by reading Paolo Costa's essay, "A Secular Wonder," in the book that I've blogged about previously: The Joy of Secularism: 11 Essays for How We Live Now.

I love that Now in the sub-title. It's all that we have, even if we're engrossed in mulling over the past or envisioning the future, because the mulling and envisioning is happening now.

Costa reminds us that life is filled with ups and downs, pleasures and sadnesses, meaningful moments and existential anxiety. 

...we cannot but struggle to feel at home in it [the world], even though such an abode has many facades and some are not reassuring at all. And that is why most of us are, most of the time, restless and dissatisfied. We habitually feel at home only by dreaming of being elsewhere. And that looks like a laughing matter, in its own way.

Beautiful.

That's a terrific line: "We habitually feel at home only by dreaming of being elsewhere." Such is religion in a nutshell. It's a dream of another world, a higher reality, a dimension of spirituality rather than materiality.

Meanwhile, true believers in something more and better miss the wonder of what's here and now. Their consciousness is so fixated on a promise of a salvation, enlightenment, miracle, or whatever that's to come, they look past what is right in front of their God-seeking faces.

Wonder, says Costa, is a mood, not a particular perception, emotion, thought, or other experience. A mood is a "fundamental emotional attunement... a basic disposition to be affected in this or that way by the world around us."

That is why moods can also be depicted as objectless emotions, because they point in an indeterminate direction and operate for the respondent as open-ended signals... In particular, they are the background against which the particular emotions are the foreground.

...We can begin by being startled by thunder and end up in a general mood of astonishment. Or we can start off with a fearful mood and end up being startled by any sound in the surrounding ambience. Of course, there is no mystery here: it is only the nature of our life-world that makes a lasting dialectic between object and world not just possible but common.

As Stanley Cavell once put it, "Sense experience is to objects what moods are to the world."

There's lots of different moods. Moodiness isn't a particular emotional state, like that word seems to imply. ("She's a moody person" is taken to mean someone who is almost always unhappy.) Each of us sees the world through a unique pair of mood glasses, so to speak.

Wonder is a wonderful mood.

If we're fortunate enough to be moody in a wonder-filled sense, we should smile. Costa describes it, insofar as it can be described, as a bodily and mental thrill that results from an encounter with something in our world that appears new and is unpredicted. 

Other words for wonder: astonishment, amazement, surprise, awe, stupor, fascination, curiosity, "startlement." (Startlement is what I felt a few days ago when I glanced down and saw rain drops on a leaf that was lying on the ground.)

Moods come and go.

Probably it isn't possible, or desirable, for wonder to be the everlasting background of our emotional/affective life. But for me it is a state I can easily return to by looking upon the world with fresh eyes, marveling not at this or that, but the simple fact of thatness.

Costa quotes Czeslaw Milosz. This is a marvelous description of what is so difficult to speak about:

I am here. Those three words contain all that can be said -- you begin with those words and you return to them. Here means on this earth, on this continent, in this city and no other, and in this epoch I call mine, this century, this year. 

I was given no other place, no other time, and I touch my desk to defend myself against the feeling that my own body is transient. This is all very fundamental, but after all, the science of life depends on the gradual discovery of fundamental truths.

I have written on various subjects, and not, for the most part, as I would have wished. Nor will I realize my long-standing intention this time. But I am always aware that what I want is impossible to achieve.

I would need the ability to communicate my full amazement at "being here" in one unattainable sentence which would simultaneously transmit the smell and texture of my skin, everything stored in my memory, and all I now assent to, dissent from.

I'm with you, Czeslaw. You've won the Nobel prize in Literature. If you're enable to communicate your amazement at "being here," I'm certainly not able to either.

All I can say is that sometimes the sense of wonder I feel of simply existing here in this world strikes me as being absolutely crazy. Usually, though, I feel that now I'm the most sane I've ever been. Anyway, this sort of craziness and sanity isn't a matter of psychiatric diagnosing. It's highly subjective. 

Like wonder. May your 2012 be as crazy or sane as you like. And, wonder-filled.
