That is because those cities took home top honors on the list of the happiest cities for people to work in, according to online employment advice forum CareerBliss. The list, which was based on postings by employees, took into account factors such as job resources, company culture and work environment in composing their rankings. Rounding out the top ten list of the happiest cities were:
"There were a few surprises this year," Matt Miller, chief technology officer and co-founder of CareerBliss, said. "Oklahoma City, which ranked 31 in 2011, moved up to our top ten list for 2012. Miami, which ranked fourth last year, is now first overall. On average, employees in the 50 happiest cities are most satisfied with the culture of their company, the people they work with, their day-to-day tasks and the way they work." At the other end of the spectrum was New Haven, Conn., which was rated as the unhappiest city for people to work in. According to the survey, cities that ranked low on the unhappy list were consistently rated low by employees due to a lack of growth opportunity and unimpressive reward systems and support. You might be wondering: if lonely people aren't in contact with others, how can they spread their loneliness? The thing is that loneliness is a state of mind rather than an absolute absence of social connections. Lonely people may be with others much of the time, but they aren't able to connect. They feel disconnected and isolated even in social situations. And the people they are in contact with pick up on and share those feelings. But those feelings do of course affect relationships, and lonely people lose friends. Sadly, before their friends leave, they end up feeling lonely as well! This is true for other negative emotions, such as anger and depression as well. It's even true for factors such as obesity, criminality, and bankruptcy. Now for the positive. Another study by Harvard Medical School professor Nicholas Christakis and James Fowler from the University of California, San Diego, also found that happiness spreads through populations. One happy person spreads their joy to others. In fact, they could measure the increase in happiness as it formed a chain reaction that benefits not only people's friends, but their friends' friends, and their friends' friends' friends. This effect lasts for up to one year. How strong is this effect? It's pretty strong. If you're happy, a friend living within a mile experiences a 25% chance of being more happy. One of your friends' friends has nearly a 10 percent chance of increased happiness, and a friend of that friend has a 5.6 percent increased chance—a three-degree cascade. Compare that to, say, a $ 5000 income bump, which increases your odds of being happy by just 2%. Every happy person in our world has a significant effect on many people around them, adding in a measurable way to the sum total of human happiness. A study by Nicholas A. Christakis and others showed that the average lifetime of a contentment "infection" is 10 years, while the average lifetime of a discontentment "infection" is 5 years. Also, this study showed that happiness spreads faster than misery. As Christakis says, "It's pleasurable to be near other happy individuals and not near other unhappy individuals." Sometimes the quest for happiness is seen as being selfish, but it's clear that that's a shortsighted view. How you experience life, and how life experiences affect you depend on the power of your mind. Whether you are going to be healthy, successful, or happy depends on your mind power, and the reality your mind has created for you. In your subconscious mind, you unwittingly create your own reality through your own thoughts or subconscious mind. Therefore, in life, every thought counts, because your whole being is composed of thoughts -- thoughts about yourself, others, and the world around you. In Eastern religions, such as Buddhism, the purpose in life is to regain full awareness of one's true nature -- which is enlightenment. In Christianity, the purpose in life is to know God through awareness of one's own inadequacy and sinful nature, which require God's grace. From the religious point of view, life provides many opportunities for consciousness and enlightenment. How is that some people go through life and miss those opportunities, and, worse, not knowing that they have missed? The answer is in the mind power. Each and every one of us is blessed with that mind power, but not all of us know how to harness that mind power to know ourselves better through enlightenment, and to make our lives more fulfilling. For example, many people complain about life: they say that life is not what they think it is, or what they want it to be. They may even say that they don't have the opportunities, or that the circumstances are not right for them. Many of them do not know that they have the freedom to make any change they choose to make, if they want to. Unfortunately, many of them choose not to. They do not understand intentions are powerful, and positive intentions can enhance their mind power. Again, there are those whose ill health has been plaguing them all their lives. The may blame their genes. They do not know that mind power has the capability not only to switch on and ! off cert ain genes, but also to enhance the quality of their genes. To illustrate, an individual may have a damaged organ that causes health problems. However, the cells in the damaged organ are constantly regenerated; during the regeneration process, a powerful mind with positive intentions can increase the production of neuropeptides, thereby instrumental in improving the quality of regenerated cells of the damaged organ. In other words, you may have negative beliefs because you have been sick and pain has been a daily reality for you. Only when your positive belief is stronger than your negative one then you can change that negative belief. Therefore, to change a belief is not easy, but not impossible: it is all in the mind. If your positive belief in health is greater than your negative belief in sickness, then you will recover. The mind is one of the most important and powerful body organs: it controls what you do and how you feel. Everything begins with the mind, and it is all in the mind. Your best defense? Understanding what causes it (and there are many triggers) so you can take steps to prevent those negative effects. This is the one most people think of when they hear the word "stress," that nagging feeling that follows you throughout a high-pressure or high-expectation situation, often leaving you feeling jumpy or defensive even after the situation cools. We'll look at that major cause, of course, then move on to a lesser known group that, over the long term, can have silent but equally frightening effects. Roll up your sleeves and join me as we identify the things that make our stress levels rise--and then put them back in their places to reclaim good health! Stress #1: Your ThinkingThe body/mind connection is strong. What you are thinking and the emotions you are feeling can actually manifest in your body physically. When stress and pressure build, the load they place on your body causes constriction, resulting in a whole cascade of events and symptoms. These range from the relatively minor, such as achiness and fatigue, to the serious, including recurring headaches, debilitating pain, immune issues, and hormonal imbalances. Our mindsets--perceptions and beliefs--are often influenced by past responses that helped preserve us in dangerous situations throughout human history. Even if the original circumstances (think saber-tooth tigers) are no longer present in our lives, our ingrained response determines how we react to other stresses, sometimes even harmless ones. This "flight or fight" pattern becomes entrenched in our everyday lives, affecting how we behave under ordinary, more minor stress from finances, work, family, and health issues. The result: overproduction of the stress hormone cortisol--a life-sav! ing bioc hemical during an actual threat, but one that causes unwanted effects when it builds up in the body unnecessarily. Your Stress-Buster: Look realistically at every situation that makes your stress response rise. First, gain perspective as to whether or not it is really "threatening." (Example: Canceled flights and traffic delays are inconveniences, not threats.) Next, take control by considering your own responsibility. If something is beyond your control--a stressor such as a poor work situation or inconvenient weather clearly is not your fault--don't own them. Employees all over the country were asked to evaluate 10 factors that affect workplace happiness. Killeen ranked among the happiest cities for work Posted: 19 Jan 2012 08:00 PM PST KILLEEN, Texas – Killeen closes out 2011 with another ranking among the top cities in the nation. CareerBliss has released its annual list of Happiest and Unhappiest Cities for Work with Killeen claiming the number seven spot on the Happiest Cities list. Thousands of employees in the happiest cities say they're most satisfied with the people they work with, the way they work and the work they do, while employees in the unhappiest cities want to see better growth opportunities, compensation and company culture. "Positive ratings in national surveys by third parties send a message to the market that money cannot buy," said John Crutchfield, President/CEO of the Greater Killeen Chamber of Commerce. "The latest by CareerBliss is more evidence that Killeen is a great place to live, work and invest." According to this survey the happiest city for work is Miami, followed by Worcester, Mass., Oklahoma City, San Jose, Calif., and Oxnard, Calif. rounding out the top five. Killeen ranked higher than the three largest Texas cities at seventh followed by ninth ranked San Antonio, 17th ranked Houston, and 41st ranked Dallas. New Haven, Conn. was named the unhappiest city for work followed by Dayton, Ohio, Milwaukee, Wis., Tulsa, Okla. and Albuquerque, N.M. Only one Texas city was listed on the top 30 unhappiest cities; which was Austin coming in ninth. The CareerBliss data evaluates the key factors which affect work happiness, including: one's relationship with their boss and co-workers, their work environment, job resources, compensation, growth opportunities, company culture, company reputation, their daily tasks, and job control over the work that they do on a daily basis. The data accounts for how an employee values each factor as well as how important that factor is to the employee's overall happiness. All assessments were derived from January 1, 2011 through December 31, 2011. A total of 43,000 employee reviews were used for this report. A minimum of 50 employee reviews was required within each city to be considered for this data set. During 2011 Killeen was also ranked first overall on NewGeography.com's Best Cities for Jobs, third amongst medium metros on Military.com and USAA's annual Best Cities for Military Retirement, third on Kiplinger.com's most affordable U.S. MSAs to live in and fifth in the Milken Institute's annual Best-Performing Cities Index.
