12 Stunning Tree Houses

Image
When I was little, I visited a friend whose dad built a tree house with a zipline that led directly to the familys front door. It was the coolest thing Ive ever seenbut nothing compared with these astonishing dwellings. Some houses are the handiwork of ambitious amateurs, while others are eco-friendly architectural marvels. Ive Got My Eye on You Sure, this tree house looks suspiciously like an eyeball, but the Free Spirit Sphere (designed by Tom Chudleigh) coexists unobtrusively with its forest environment. Is There More Nutritional Value in Organic Food?

I was at a food show a few years back and making a day of sampling various food oddities and talking to different food purveyors. For those of you that have somewhat of a foggy notion of what to expect from a food show; think of it as a trade show, held in a cavernous convention center with aisle after aisle of booths hawking everything from bacon-flavored vodka to sugar cookies with the likeness of your child inked on the cookie surface. I found myself talking to a fruit and vegetable importer and was asking him my usual 20 questions about the provenance of his fruit, in this case it was tomatoes. After asking about whether or not his tomatoes were cultivated with the use of pesticides, he responded, somewhat defensively, with, You know, organic tomatoes dont taste any better than conventional tomatoes and they are no better for you either. While I couldnt speak to the subjective idea of whether one tomato tastes better than another, I was pretty sure that an organic tomato, beyond th

Music I Love Now: My Current Top 10

Image
There is not a radio station that plays all the music I love. I dream of having my own radio station one day, so I can share the eclectic selection of music I love with othersIm sure there are more of us who defy categorization, who live beyond the borders of adult contemporary, modern country, oldies, or classic rock. In fact, I am totally bored with much of the music of my past (all except Jackson Browne, that ishe lives in a category all his own). So here is a totally random and incomplete list of what I am listening to now; it only includes albums that have come out in the last two years or so (Im not being too specific here), and that hint at what you would hear if you stopped by at my house when I was home. (But please, call first! Otherwise, you never know what you might find.) 1. Avett Brothers. Oh, Avett Brothers how I adore you. First, the records, all of them. But then, see them in concertoh, my lord! Heaven. Even sweeter is hearing my 4-year-old walk around the house singi

5 Signs You Should Break Up With Your Doctor

Image
By Melanie Haiken, Caring.com senior editorRecently an interesting discussion has been taking place at Caring.com. The subject? What to do when the doctor isnt listening to you or the person youre caring for, not carrying out your wishes when it comes to treatment and medication choices, or recommending drugs or treatments that seem inappropriate for much older patients. Here are a few examples. LindaSD says her moms doctor tries to make her feel guilty when she asks to remove a medication from her moms regimen or refuses a procedure. Her mom, who is 90, is in late-stage Alzheimers, so she decided not to give Aricept and to refuse a colonoscopy, but had to fight those battles with the doctor who disagreed. Grannylove2 feels its important to honor her moms decision not to take Aricept for her advancing Alzheimers, and told a story of her mom being admitted to the ER for a cracked ankle, then falling off the bed while having X-rays and shattering her heel and arm. Improve Your Health With How You Breathe

Image
If we train our breathing, we can control our emotionsthat is, we can cope with the happiness and pain in our lives. Buddhadasa BhikkhuEver try to hold your breath until you turned blue? OK, so you threatened your mom when you were a kid, but before you would turn blue you would just pass out so your body could take a big suck of air and get back to living. Three minutes, thats all it takes to rob the brain of enough oxygen to put you into the deep sleep. And yet it is common for people to unconsciously hold their breath for short periods throughout the day. In a yoga or meditation practice your breath is the key that unlocks the door to the inner Self. It is called Prana, a Sanskrit word, which translates as both breath and life. Prana is the vital energy force that pervades our physical, mental, and spiritual bodies, keeping us alive and vibrant. It also pervades the entire universe. The practice of pranayama (breath work) allows for full control of that energizing force in ones body,

We are giving away two copies of The Power of Purpose: Find Meaning, Live Longer, Better by Richard J. Leider. Check out this excerpt and then leave a comment for your chance to win the book! Purpose Myths Its not just the high achievers but people who achieve less dramatic successes as well, who have to overcome their self-imposed doubts and other obstacles to get started when they discover what moves them. The following are four common myths that may block us from intentionally moving ahead toward our purpose. As you read each one, ask yourself, Do I believe this? Myth 1: To have purpose means I must do something completely original.Reality: Can you think of anything that is totally new? Almost every idea or creation is an extension or synthesis or previous ideas. New scientific breakthroughs are built on existing fundamental truths, often as the result of reorganizing or reapplying old concepts. As we uncover our purpose, we often need to accept this fact: that at the heart, most ne

20 New Uses for Shampoo

Image
Ive been thinking about extra shampoo ever since I sent a box of random bars of hotel soap and shampoo bottles to Clean the Worlda smart and admirable non-profit that sends unused soap and shampoo to people at risk of acute infection and disease due to lack of soap. What I came to realize is that most of have old shampoo around for any number of reasons. Perhaps you collect hotel shampoo, or bought some whose fragrance is stronger than tear gas, or changed to an all-natural brand before finishing the paraben-y bottle. Either way, if you have extra shampoo around, dont wash it down the drain in vain, put it to use. Here are twenty uses to use it up. Donate your old shampoo to Clean the World to help fight acute acute respiratory infection and diarrheal disease due to lack of hygiene supplies. And now, Ill get down off my soapbox. For a stuck zipper, put a drop of shampoo on a Q-tip and dab it onto the zipper. The shampoo will help the zipper to slide easily. Buff your shoes. In a pinch,

Chocolate May Reduce Risk of Heart Failure

Forget what youve heard about death by chocolate. A new Harvard study shows that chocolate may be good for your heart. Its a great day for chocolate lovers everywhere.Murray Mittleman and his colleagues at Harvard Medical School studied data on 31,823 middle-aged and elderly Swedish women to assess the relationship between chocolate and heart failure. The women who consumed an average of one to two servings (thats a fairly small amount) of high-quality, cocoa-rich chocolate per week had a 32 percent lower risk of experiencing heart failure. Those women who ate 1 to 3 servings a month had a 26 percent lower risk of heart failure. The scientists noted that the high concentration of phytonutrients called flavonoids in dark chocolate are potent antioxidants that are likely responsible for the results. The flavonoids are believed to lower blood pressure and reducing inflammation linked with heart failure.Keep in mind that not just any chocolate will do. Forget the vast majority of candy bars

Whats Lurking in Your Natural Cosmetics?

Image
Most body care and cosmetics companies include highly toxic ingredients in their products. But, more and more companies are touting their products as healthy alternatives to the chemical-laden brands. I randomly selected two products from a popular natural body care and cosmetics company to determine whether there were any nasty chemicals lurking there. Heres what I found (these toxins are common to many brands of products):-Five different types of parabens butyl-, ethyl-, isobutyl-, methyl-, and propyl- parabens. These commonly-used preservatives are known toxins that irritate the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract; and have been linked to many allergic reactions. Doesnt sound so bad? Which Reusable Water Bottle Is Best?

I do believe that there will be a time when we look back and say, Oh yeah, that was the plastic age. Look what we did to ourselves. And to be honest, I think the plastic footprint is a greater risk to the health of our environment, to the people here and to the marine species for sure, than the carbon footprint. Bill Francis, president of the Algalita Marine Research Foundation as quoted in popularmechanics.com in an article by Chris Ladd.I agree with Bill Francis and believe that the number one choice we can make in cleaning up our planet, making our lives greener and helping our children be healthier, is giving up disposable plastic bottles, water and otherwise. Image from www.kleankanteen.comWhen I started writing this post, I thought that the titles question was one with many answers, depending on individual preference. But in researching the companies behind four stainless steel and three glass bottles, I came to realize that one company in each category, and one company overall,

7 Common Dreams and What They Mean

Image
By Molly Mann, DivineCarolineDreams come to us in our most private moments: wrapped up in sheets, our public faces stored away for the night. The visions we see in sleep are supposed to be expressions of our individual psyches and imaginations, but most peoples dreams are based on themes that are very common. I thought my recurring dream of losing my teeth was scary and freakish until I went online to find thousands of others having the same dream, all trying to find out what the heck it could mean. Just because our dreams are shared, though, doesnt mean they arent unique; the way we experience these common elements in dreaming life is whats significant. 1. Finding yourself at work or school naked Not surprisingly, Freud interpreted dreams about being naked as repressed sexual wishes. But the most important part of this dream is the feelings that are involved. You suddenly find yourself exposed, vulnerable, and awkward. What area of your life corresponds to that feeling? Figure this ou

The Sound of Pleasure

Remember the hushed make out sessions of your youth. Rarely did we allow ourselves to sound out our pleasure lest our parents would hear. For many people, not wanting others to hear any evidence of our intimate encounters still carries some left over shame that keeps a heavy lid on our ability to experience our own pleasure decades later. After our parents, it was the neighbors, after the neighbors, it was the kids.I am not talking about dirty words, although those certainly can ignite a passionate situation as well as clarify boundaries when necessary. Words come from the higher thinking function in our brains. Sounds of arousal like mmmmm, oooooh, and ahhhh actually help to turn the thinking brain off. Expressing your pleasure through your sound initiates from a much more primal place in your brain.Think about the last time you ate something profoundly delicious and the sound of ooh and ahhh just rushed out of you as the taste melted in your mouth. Allowing the sound to accompany the

8 Reasons Not to Eat Tuna

Image
By Mickey Z., Planet GreenLets put aside ideologyfor a momentand instead state an unadorned bit of common sense: Bluefin tuna (and other large fish) would not be in danger if humans didnt kill and eat them. Thus, in that spirit, I present 8 Reasons Why We Should Leave Tuna (and Other Large Fish) Alone . 1. Mercury is Toxic The FDA says: Nearly all fish and shellfish contain traces of methylmercury. However, larger fish that have lived longer have the highest levels of methylmercury because theyve had more time to accumulate it. What can methylmercury do to us humans? For starters: brain damage, memory loss, personality change, tremors, spontaneous abortion, and damage to a developing fetus. Fatigue and memory loss caused by mercury poisoning from eating fish is so common that doctors even have a name for it: fish fog. 2. Large Fish Are Just Like Kittens (or Maybe Even Tigers) In the words of PETAs Ashley Byrne: PETA thought that by renaming fish sea kittens, compassionate

How to Make Your Own Rose Water

Image
Rose water is used in cosmetics for its lovely scent, but also because it has light astringent properties. As the gentlest of all astringents, rose water is often used as toner for fair and dry skin. You must be careful when purchasing rose water to buy only the 100 percent pure form. Often what is available in pharmacies and even some natural food stores is synthetic rose oil and water with preservatives added. Pure rose water is the distilled water of roses. It is usually made by stream distillation, and it smells heavenly and tastes delicious.Availability: Besides health food stores and herb stores, you can often find rose water in delicatessens; it is used as a flavoring in fancy Greek pastries, puddings, and cakes. This recipe is the more traditional way to prepare rose water. Though its a little more involved, its fun to do and the results are outstanding. You can make a quart of excellent-quality rose water in about 40 minutes. However, if you simmer the water too long, you will c

7 Myths About Skin Care

Image
When you eat a lot of chocolates or junk foods, you will get acne. Skin care products with the word natural on the label are good for you. Pimples are caused by poor hygiene. How many of these skin-care maxims do you believe? In a world that puts too much emphasis on physical beauty, it can be frustrating for someone who has less-than-perfect skin, which is why it can be tempting to believe in all these principles as far as skin care is concerned. But the truth is, there are a lot of skin care myths out there. To help you weed out whats true and whats not when it comes to skin care, we put together this list of seven skin-care myths your mom probably never told you about: 1. Acne is caused by poor hygiene, and eating certain foods aggravates the condition. First, acne is not caused by dirt. No matter how many times you wash your face and your body, acne may still appear. The cause of acne is an overproduction of sebum, or oil, which clogs the pores. The rate at which the skin on your fac

Will Sleep Make You Slim?

Image
By Kristin Ohlson, Experience LifePeople have acknowledged the value of sleep for centuries. But theyve focused primarily on sleeps impact on brain function. If you talk to some neuroscientists today, the prevailing view is still that sleep is only for the brain, says Eve Van Cauter, PhD, professor of medicine at the University of Chicago and an expert on the ways sleep affects endocrine function.Over the last few decades, sleep researchers across the country have been overturning that view. Their studies indicate that curtailing sleep and getting poor-quality sleep are implicated in many diseases that affect the entire body, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, cancer and impaired immune function. One of the most startling observations has come from Van Cauter and her University of Chicago colleagues. Over the course of four studies, they showed that people who dont sleep enough, night after night, unwittingly trigger a hormonal storm that causes

Anti-Depressants Affecting Montreal Fish

According to a recent research study about 25 percent of Montreal residents take an anti-depressant, and human waste that enters the Montreal sewage system contains these drugs. The system is similar to sewage treatment facilities in other major cities around the world, so there is some chance a similar effect may be occurring there as well. The Montreal system treats solid waste but does not disinfect wastewater, so anti-depressants are present in the system, which empties into the Saint Lawrence river ecosystem. Researchers found anti-depressants accumulate in fish and can alter their brain activity. We know that antidepressants have negative side effects on human beings, but we dont know how exactly these chemicals are affecting the fish, and by extension, the Saint Lawrence Rivers ecosystem. Nevertheless, we are seeing an impact on the rivers ecosystem, which should concern cities everywhere, said Dr. Sbastien Sauv. (Source: eurekaalert.org)Last year research conducted in England di

What would you do?John Wayne probably would have pulled out his penknife, sliced the bite wound, sucked out the venom, and tied on a tourniquet. But thats the wrong approach for anyone except a silver-screen cowboy.Taking Care of Cuts and Scrapes 1. Myth: Cut a snakebite The safest thing to do for snakebite is just splint the limb and go to the hospital, says Christopher P. Holstege, M.D., an emergency medicine doctor and toxicology expert. Cutting the bite wound could sever tendons, nerves or arteries or increase the risk of infection, and tourniquets are risky, Dr. Holstege explains.Dr. Holstege recommends the right approaches for the following first-aid myths. 2. Myth: Put butter on a burn. Reality: If you apply butter or another substance to a serious burn, you could make it difficult for a doctor to treat the burn later and increase risk of infection. The right approach: Its usually OK

Fermented Foods: Essential Digestive Aids

Humans have been fermenting foods to aid in digestion for as far back as we can trace. Primarily they were fermented to improve holding and storing properties of foods. The milk from camels were fermented naturally to produce some of the first yogurts. Stored in goat bags and dropped over the back of camels in the hot deserts of North Africa with temperatures reaching 40C (110F) it was the ideal environment for lactic acid-producing bacteria to go to work. Pickles date back to ancient Egypt and vinegar was used by the ancient Greeks and Romans as a digestive aid, and to promote a healthy liver and gallbladder.Every culture in the world has some form of fermented foods they eat with meals to aid in digestion. It isnt necessary to eat very much, just enough to provide the proper enzymes to help break down food and make the nutrients available for absorption in the small intestine. Common in Indian, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese cuisine are sweet, sour and salty pickles; while in North an

More Cancer-Killing Compounds Found in Green Tea

Green tea has long been studied for its anti-cancer effects with positive results. But, new research published in the journal Cancer Science found there are two more reasons to drink green tea. Many past studies of green tea have shown the effectiveness of on one particular nutrient called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). But, in this exciting new study, researchers tested EGCG along with two additional plant nutrients found in green tea: catechins catechin gallate (CG), and epicatechin gallate (ECG) against one of the most deadly types of cancerpancreatic cancer. They tested the three nutrients ability to suppress cancer tumor growth and the inflammatory activity found in pancreatic tumor cells. The results were impressive: researchers found that ECGC effectively slowed tumor growth and reduced the cellular inflammation. Even more impressive, the two other nutrients: CG and ECG were substantially more effective than EGCG at halting the growth of tumors and reducing inflammation.Their re

8 Reasons to Drink Coffee

Those of us who stumble blindly, mumbling unintelligibly, from bed to coffee pot first thing in the morning already appreciate the effect of caffeine on proper brain functioningbut the benefits now seem to be further-reaching than the need to simply shake off the morning cobwebs. In a study published in a special supplement to the Journal of Alzheimers Disease, researchers explored the potential benefits of caffeine and found substantial evidence that it may be protective against the cognitive decline seen in dementia and Alzheimers disease. For the study (Therapeutic Opportunities for Caffeine in Alzheimers Disease and Other Neurodegenerative Diseases) a group of international experts looked into the effects of caffeine on the brain. The result was a collection of original studies exploring a number of topics ranging f

Beware of Chemical Miracle Cures: Fluoride, A Case StudySort Of

This is not a Harvard Business School Case study; its a Marias Farm Country Kitchen case study. Which means I tell it like it is!About 50, maybe even 60, years ago, my grandfather, J.I. Rodale, went on a revolt against the dental medical establishment of the day. (He wasnt just an organic pioneer, he was a health pioneer too). He believed that adding fluoride to our water systems to provide a miracle cure for cavities was dangerous and, frankly, stupid (take that Harvard!). As the founder ofPrevention magazine, he believed that true prevention comes from the food we eat, and the exercise we do, and the way we choose to live our liveseither healthfully orstupidly. In general, he was against the idea that artificial synthetic chemicals can be good substitutes for the real thing, whether in the food we eat, or in the soil which grows our foodhence, his work as an organic and health pioneer. But Papa (as I called him) was easy to make fun of. Firstly because he wasnt a doctor or a scientist

What Your Blood Type Says About You

In Japanese video games, blood type is commonly a dimension in character creation. In fact, some Japanese might even be shocked if a foreigner didnt know her blood type.In 1927, Takeji Furukawa, a Japanese professor, introduced the theory to the Japanese public in a paper entitled, The Study of Temperament Through Blood Type.
