Famine Declared in Somalia

The United Nations has declared that there is a famine in Somalia, due partially to a terrible drought in the region. About 3.7 million people are in a crisis and ten million in the Horn of Africa region are at risk. Over 100,000 Somalians have fled to refugee camps in Kenya. Tens of thousands might already have died.A UN official said, Even if the world starts acting as it must, now, lives will be lost. But there are many more lives that can be saved if we see the level of response that is desperately needed. (Source: CSMonitor)Complicating matters is the fact Somalia is a dangerous place for relief workers. Fourteen UN employees helping with various relief efforts have died there in the last several years.If you are interested in donating to help the starving the United Nations has a web page set up for that. They list several examples of what donations can purchase:$7: food for a malnourished child
$50: a feeding kit that feeds five children
$100: survival kits with a blanket, mattress, kitchen set, stove and soap.
$345: all-weather tent for a family About two million children are at risk from the famine and drought. UNICEF also has a donation page. A UN official said they will need about $300 million to help the distressed refugees for the next two months.The Horn of Africa is experiencing the worst drought in decades.
