Cut Your Diabetes Risk in Half

German scientists discovered that magnesium supplementation improves the bodys sensitivity to insulin and significantly reduces the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. In the study published in Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism, 52 overweight, insulin-resistant, non-diabetic men and women were given 345 mg of magnesium or a placebo every day for the length of the study, which was six months.They found that the people taking magnesium had better-balanced blood sugar levels and improved insulin sensitivity, as well as improved blood pressure. The researchers concluded that each 100 milligrams of magnesium supplemented with may lower a persons diabetes risk by 15 percent.Diabetes currently affects approximately 8 percent of the population, or 24 million Americans.Magnesium is found in pumpkin seeds, spinach, Swiss chard, soy beans, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, halibut, black beans, and navy beans.Copyright Michelle Schoffro Cook, PhD.
