8 Ways to Prevent Cancer
An estimated 1.6 million American men and women are expected to be diagnosed with cancer this year, with the number of deaths reaching571,950according to theAmerican Cancer Society.
All cancers involve the malfunction of genes that control cellgrowth and division. About 5 percent of all cancers are strongly hereditary, in that an inherited genetic alteration confers a very highrisk of developing one or more specific types of cancer. However, most cancers do not result from inherited genes but from damage to genes occurring during ones lifetime.
There are a number of ways in which you can help prevent cancer. The National Cancer Institute of the U.S. Institutes of Health recommends taking these measures to reduce your risk:
Get Cancer Screening Tests
Screening tests are a way to check your body for cancer before you have symptoms. Getting screening tests regularly may detect breast, cervical, and colorectal (colon) cancers early, when treatment is likely to work best.
1. Breast Cancer Screening
Currently, the best way to find breast cancer is with a mammogram, which is the best method to detect breast cancer early when it is easier to treat.
2. Cervical Cancer Screening
The Pap test can find abnormal cells in the cervix which may turn into cancer. Pap tests can also find cervical cancer early, when the chance of being cured is very high.
3. Colorectal (Colon) Cancer Screening
Colorectal cancer almost always develops from precancerous polyps (abnormal growths) in the colon or rectum. Screening tests can! find pr ecancerous polyps, so that they can be removed before they turn into cancer. Screening tests can also find colorectal cancer early, when treatment works best.
