Article by John Stewart

This article is basically a review of Dr Murphy's book on using your subconscious mind power to achieve monetary and social success. It lists the techniques and concepts discussed and talks about the style and presentation of the book with chapters, headings and personal stories.

For several of us, facing problems of money management, relationships and issues at work or simply plain modern day existential problems, Dr Murphy's tips in his book The Power of Your Subconscious Mind, on utilizing mind power could lead to great improvements. For those looking for monetary and social success, there are some great tips and techniques here.

While we often depend on family, friends, the office boss, or perhaps institutions like religion to find solutions to our problems, we seldom consider the fact that perhaps some of those solutions could actually lie within ourselves. If you find it hard to believe in God or the power of other men to solve your problems then perhaps it's time to use your mind power to take control of your life.

Dr Murphy's suggestions are not some new age fad but combine ancient wisdom with scientific advancements in human psychology to suggest effective ways to tap your mind power. The book also provides techniques for using your subconscious mind power. An emphasis on positive thinking helps channel your life onto a path of progress. Becoming aware of the negative thoughts in you is the first step in utilizing your mind power.

It is a difficult task for anyone to be constantly aware of his or her thoughts. However, once you manage to do this the next step is to take charge and reverse any negativity in your mind. This requires you to use your subconscious mind power to silence the voices of logic and reason that may be creating these negative thoughts in you. Since the subconscious doesn't differentiate between such things as sarcasm and humor, it is important to frame positive thoughts to give a proper direction.

Another technique is the constant ! feeding ' of the subconscious mind with positive thoughts to reinforce your desires. It is important to calm your mind before you feed it with your prayer or desire to tap your subconscious mind. The time before you sleep is best. Some main concepts influencing subconscious mind power that the book talks about are: the importance of changing your thought, framing positive desires about wealth, success, life, love, health; understanding the harmful effects of negative thought; realizing the importance of giving and the effect of prayer on the lives of those we wish to help.

The book is organized in short sections dealing with various aspects of and techniques to use subconscious mind. Each chapter ends with a short summary of main points. If you believe in or are convinced that the power to conquer your life and the world lies within your mind, then take a look at the techniques suggested by Dr Murphy to use your subconscious mind power to give your personality and life a positive thrust.

Best Diet of 2012 Is the DASH Diet: New Rankings

The best diet of 2012 is the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, according to new rankings released by U.S. News & World Report.

This is the second year in a row the DASH diet, which aims to prevent and lower high blood pressure, has won the category of "best diet overall."

"While it may have started as a [blood pressure] lowering diet, it really has incredible nutritional value," said Deborah Enos, a certified nutritionist in Seattle and a MyHealthNewsDaily contributor.

Second place was won by the Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes (TLC) diet, which aims to lower cholesterol, and third place went to the Mayo Clinic diet, which focuses on weight loss.

"TLC is another example of a wonderful 'medical' type of diet that has gone mainstream," Enos said. But while it's low sodium requirement means it boosts heart health, it may be difficult for some to follow.

The U.S. News & World Report description of the diet's strengths and weaknesses noted that "The TLC diet takes work and a certain aptitude for reading nutrition labels."

"The easy-to-follow aspect is almost more important than the weight lost on a program," Enos said. Her clients, she said, have a difficult time sticking with diets that are hard to follow. "Now, for my clients who need to lower their cholesterol levels, this is an amazing and necessary diet for them to consider."

The rankings were decided by a panel of 22 experts in diet, nutrition, obesity, food psychology, diabetes and heart disease, according to the magazine's website. The experts rated the 25 diets in seven categories: how easy the diets are to follow, their ability to produce short-term and long-term weight loss, nutritional completeness, safety and potential for preventing and managing diabetes and heart disease. The full rankings were published online today (Jan. 4).

Best diets for weight loss

The top three diets for weight loss are the Weight Watchers diet, the Biggest Loser diet and the Jenny Craig diet, according to the rankings.

"The data show that dieters had the best luck with Weight Watchers for both short and long term weight loss," and the diet ranked highly in terms of how easy it was to follow, Enos said. "The Weight Watchers plan is also the diet that people most often return to — it appears in the article, and in my own experience, to be the diet that people really refer back to over their lifetime."

The experts rated the Weight Watchers diet as a 3.7 out of 5 in the category of easy to follow, whereas the Biggest Loser diet scored a 2.9 in this category, according to the rankings. The Jenny Craig diet scored a 3.6, but fared less well than Weight Watchers in terms of its ability to produce weight loss.

"Let's face the facts of our busy lives, if a program isn't easy to follow, we probably won't," Enos said.

Weight Watchers won the category of best commercial diet plan, edging out the Jenny Craig diet, which relied too heavily on packaged meals and came with a high cost, according to the rankings.

However, when Consumer Reports released its ratings of commercial diet plans in May, Jenny Craig ranked as the winner. Those raters acknowledged criticisms that the diet is hard to follow, but cited a two-year study of 332 people showing that 92 percent of participants stuck with the diet. That study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2010.

Best diets for healthy eating

The DASH and TLC diets topped the category of best diets for healthy eating, which emphasized nutrional completeness and safety. The Mediterranean diet ranked third.

The data show that the DASH diet offers the best overall nutrition, Enos said. "It has one of the highest levels of B-12 and potassium," she noted, whereas the Weight Watchers plan is low in those nutrients, and recommends that its followers take a multivitamin.

The DASH diet prescribes the number of servings of grains, vegetables, dairy and other food types that a person should eat daily, based on their calorie needs. It suggests high amounts of fiber, potassium and magnesium, and keeps sweets to a minimum.

The diet caps salt intake to the recommended daily values —1,500 milligrams for people who are age 51 or older, African-American, or have hypertension, diabetes or chronic kidney disease; 2,300 milligrams for everyone else.

The DASH diet also won in the category of best diabetes diets, while the Ornish diet, which focuses on low fat intake and emphasizes exercise and stress management, won for best heart-healthy diet.

Pass it on: One panel has decided the best diet of 2012 is the DASH diet, which emphasizes consuming lean protein, fruits and vegetables.

Health Benefits of Yoga - Both for Body and Mind

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 12:00 PM PST

Article by Peter Hutch

Yoga has been practiced by ancient mystics and philosophers for thousands of years. Most people who hear the word yoga immediately think that this particular activity is simply a way to increase flexibility. In reality however, yoga offers so many more health benefits. Aside from its weight loss properties, yoga is also known to offer certain preventative medicine properties.

There are different kinds of health benefits of yoga. Usually, the benefits received from a type of yoga depend on the kind of yoga a person is practicing. One of the kinds of yoga that is gaining in popularity thanks to its health benefits is laughter yoga.

Yoga is often credited with physical benefits such as better flexibility, stable heart rate, toned muscle and increased stamina. In yoga sessions and class, people are taught to stretch their muscles so that they can be agile and flexible. But for new observers, the benefits of yoga only seem to be physical. Yoga offers more than the benefits to the body. Studies have shown that Yoga also provides key benefits to the mind.

Yoga is the coming together and oneness of body and mind. It is the consolidation of the movement (positions) and the breathing that makes the body tense and relax leading to the calmness of mind and spirit. Effectively done, it makes your whole being refreshed and rejuvenated. Yoga also gives you the ability to shut the noises of the world and get yourself into a trance of silence and solitude.

One of the most profound benefits of yoga is stress management. Imagine a stressful day at work or at home. The fast-paced environment requires you to be constantly worrying about the next thing. With yoga, you can benefit from relaxed breathing with a reasonable degree of control. Such activity allows your body and muscles to relax and think about peaceful thoughts, diverting your focus on stress. Even flexing activities could help a stressed person by loosening the tight muscles. Often when someone is stressed, the muscles are as well.!

M any people feel that practicing yoga on a continual basis helps not only physical well-being, but also mental and psychological well-being. Yoga helps to calm the mind, allowing practitioners to feel a sense of inner peace and balance.

Another benefit of yoga is its power to ease muscle and joint pains. Through performing the various poses, you will increase circulation to all of the parts of your body. You will also stretch out tendons and muscles. The combined effect is a decrease in soreness and reduced joint pain. This is especially good for arthritis sufferers and those who suffer from back aches.

One of the most profound benefits of yoga that happens is the capability of putting your internal mind as well as your body into a state of harmony, mainly through the use of meditation. Meditation gives you the ability to clear your inner mind and provides much needed inner peace. The meditation aspect of yoga can assist in taking away stress that is unhealthy from both your body and your mind. There are negative aspects of stress that effects your endocrinal, emotional as well as physical systems.

Making the practice your own

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 12:00 PM PST

When you first learn to meditate, it's appropriate and helpful to take on structured practices. There are plenty of such practices available – ones for cultivating absorption, such as mindfulness of breathing, or for 'positive emotion', such as metta bhavana, or general overall mindfulness, such as systematically cultivating awareness of the 'four foundations' – body sensations, hedonic feeling-tone, mental activities and dhammas or 'ultimates'.

Structure is usually very helpful for learning the ropes. All Meditation practices are pragmatic – the main question to bear in mind is 'is this working'? Is it effective in cultivating the quality that it's intended to cultivate? If it is, then it makes sense to continue pursuing this approach as long as it is effective. If not, then it's necessary to review our approach and try another.

For example, we may have learned the mindfulness of breathing as a way of settling the mind. If we've never tried anything like meditation before, it's very likely that the first thing we notice is that the mind wants to do anything but settle! Pragmatically speaking, it's often useful to give the thinking mind a simple 'task' to do, so that there's less likelihood of it getting carried away with endless thoughts. Hence, it's often recommended to start the practice using counting of breaths – this can be very effective in keeping the mind from wandering while focussed attention is being paid to the sensations of the breathing itself.

Note that we've got two quite distinct things going on here. First, there is the counting, which is a conceptual activity. Second, there is the directing and settling of attention (i.e. awareness) on the sensations of the breathing, which is non-conceptual. Being unclear about this basic distinction is where unhelpful views can appear. For instance, the thinking mind can subtly take over and make it into 'mindfulness of counting' rather than 'mindfulness of breathing'. Or it could 'usurp' the function of awareness so that we are attending to thoughts of the breathing rather than the immediate tactile sensations of the breathing itself.

These views may be unhelpful but nevertheless, if we recognise them, they represent a great opportunity to learn something about how the thinking mind functions. It functions by taking over! That's to say, it literally thinks that it is experiencing the breath (and everything else that we experience through our senses). In fact, all the mind can do is abstract from our direct experience. We can think of the taste of a strawberry or an orange and, in imagination at least, there is some 'sense' of what that taste is like. This is presumably how we recognise the particular flavours of those fruits when we eat them. However, the memory of a taste is completely different to the immediate experience of the taste when eating a juicy strawberry or orange right now. Similarly, we can think of the sensation of the breathing without realising that this is just a mental activity and not the actual experience of the breath.

Clarifying this distinction between mental activities and immediate sense impressions is crucial to learning to meditate. In fact, it's always crucial, however long we've been practising. Attempting to focus on thoughts won't lead to very much real tranquillity or absorption because thoughts are, ultimately, precisely what underlies our lack of tranquillity. All we have to do is notice the difference – 'this is a sensation' and 'this is thinking'. We don't have to eliminate thinking in order to become more absorbed – all we need to do is to let it fall into the background as we recognise the actual object – the immediate tactile sensations of the breath arising in awareness.

Another unhelpful view comes from an attitude of 'should-ism', e.g. 'I've been taught the practice in this particular way, so I should always do it in just this way'. This kind of view can be insidious as there's often a positive basis – e.g. respect for the tradition, method or teacher. 'lf thousands of people have meditated in this way for thousands of years, who am I to do it differently?' Well, if such thoughts do arise, rest assured that the only people who meditate according to exactly the same structure for their whole 'meditation career' are those who give up before very long! And they probably give up because they don't seem to be getting anywhere with their meditation.

Structure enables us to learn more effectively, but the implicit question we always have to bear in mind is, as I mentioned above, is this effective? We learn what's effective by doing it, and by making mistakes. 'Mistakes' is a misnomer really because we're simply learning from experience. This experiential and exploratory attitude is fundamental to the Buddha's teaching. According to one sutta (discourse), he tells a group of lay followers not to depend on what they've heard, or on tradition, or revered texts, or views, or reasoning or what seems to work for someone else, or what's said by a respected teacher. Rather, he says, when you know in direct experience that an approach is good, blameless and wise, and leads to benefit and happiness, that's self-evidently how to practice.

So, with the mindfulness of breathing (though this applies to any practice), there comes a point sooner or later when it's appropriate to diverge from the way it's been taught. It's not indispensable always to start by counting the breaths. How the practice goes is contingent upon many factors – you might be doing the mindfulness of breathing before or after a busy and hectic day, or you might be doing it in the middle of a meditation retreat. In the first instance, counting breaths is likely to be helpful, in the second, it could well be unnecessary as the mind is already quite settled and tranquil. If your intention is to enter the absorptions (jhanas), any structure will naturally drop away. In fact, if you 'religiously' keep to the structure or cling limpet-like to instructions like 'cultivate one-pointed effort to stay with the breathing continuously', deeper absorption will be prevented from arising even if the conditions are otherwise very supportive.

Once the basic structured practice has been explored sufficiently (what is 'sufficient'? Adapt the Buddha's advice above!) you can make it more 'your own' by approaching the various stages you've learned as 'tools' that you can use as appropriate, rather than as an invariable format. Keeping to the basic practice is a bit like a piano player never playing anything but scales – to discover our potential we have become competent at the basics and then be prepared to let go, explore, make 'mistakes', learn, and eventually discover how to improvise, letting go of the form altogether.

Yoga is Most Beneficial When Everything is Right

Article by steve.last

Almost anything you read, watch, or listen to about yoga will tell you to practice often, but one of the yoga tips that sometimes get skipped is that you must practice it right. Meditation can be helpful in establishing a calm and peaceful state of mind. But if discomfort exists the chances are that meditation and relaxation state will suffer. A good meditation yoga mat along with a pillow enables you to sit comfortably in meditation postures, plus some other factors need taking care of.

Always practice only the right age and developmentally appropriate yoga poses, breathing exercises, chanting, mantra meditation, and relaxation techniques. Many recently have been talking a great deal about child yoga, and we will say here that if you take your children to lessons, do make sure that the trainer offers a truly child-friendly relationship to the physical and philosophical traditions of yoga. In the right environment your children will grow and experience creativity, self-acceptance, interpersonal skill development, positive thinking, non-attachment, and environmental awareness, but as a parent we must stress that there are good facilities and sometimes bad, as in all walks of life.

As we grow older yoga can be especially beneficial. Aging normally brings along several chronic ailments and diseases for most of us. Staying active is the key factor to staying young and slowing the aging process and yoga most definitely will help with that. However, to get it right you must take the advice of your yogi and not push your body to achieve the next stage in the poses by stretching too hard or too fast.

Again, in line with yogic practices, many yogis believe that in addition to the physical body, there is a second body comprised of many energy lines. They use the theory to avoid problems as you progress. Listen to the guidance given, and observe it!

Get your yoga practice right and many cures have been suggested achievable through yoga.

Yoga cures different incurable diseases ! by achie ving balance. Yoga is most important for our body and mind. Yoga cures an individual of a lot of illnesses. One has to practice the postures, breathing techniques, and dietary regulations and incorporate yoga in their lives to attain the benefits.

Asana, or posture, is only a small part of the overall system. Asanas help achieve relaxation and control of the muscle groups. When the body relaxes, it becomes comfortable posture and one can maintain it for longer duration, which is the purpose of Yoga.

Good sleep is important for the body to replenish itself and for the greatest productivity and enjoyment of the day time. Sleep means total relaxation of body and mind, no activity of mind, no movement in mind. It is the state of unconsciousness as for as outwards moving consciousness is concerned. Many people say that as soon as you start yoga you will find that your sleep improves.

This is a remarkable achievement which helps many people. Sleep problems are some of the most common problems that parents face with their kids. Some children may have chronic sleep difficulties, and many children are actually going through their days sleep-deprived.

Acne can be helped by yoga. Yogic treatment of acne begins with taking extra care to wash your hands properly with a mild soap many times a day. This will effectively prevent bacteria from entering into the body system.

The yogic lifestyle can help prevent and cure cardiovascular heart diseases. Proper life-style and diet play a key role in managing and avoiding heart disease.

Asthma can be eased by yoga in some cases. Asthma is thought to be very often caused by a combination of factors, most are physical from the environment around us, but genetic factors feature too. Whatever the cause, asthma is a breathing problem that results due to the sudden constriction of the airways that channel the air to and from the lungs.

Although there are many triggers that can set off an asthma attack, those thought most common are those s! uch as d ust and other air borne fragments allergies, cold, humidity, animal hair and so on. If you have asthma, the inside walls of your airways are inflamed (swollen). However, that healthy living and other more specific yogic actions will help, is a theory held by many.

Anyone involved in yoga will tell you that yoga cures the person as using the principles of nature, but yoga has to face many obstacles, which if avoided and if you get it right it quite possibly can give almost instant results. So, put simply; Yoga cures impossibilities by some of these simple methodologies connected with postures not known to many. Once you have been trained in these methods and postures, they become very easy and simple, but highly effective.

The heavy fog of karma

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 10:00 AM PST

To sum up Buddhism we might say:  The Buddha invites us to behold our true nature which is clear light and space-like. More importantly, this nature is real and active.  It animates our mortal body but is, itself, not mortal—it is immortal (amrita). To realize this immortal nature is nirvana.

Sounds easy until we begin to look for this nature or Buddha-nature within the framework of our samsaric body (the Five Aggregates or pañcaskandha). So why so much difficulty?  It is because of the karma we have generated.  It runs counter to any effort we might undertake to behold our true nature.  According to the Mahaparinirvana Sutra:

"O good man! The case is the same with all beings. They do not come near to a good teacher of the Way. So, they cannot see the Buddha-Nature which is within, even though they possess it. And they are reigned over by greed, lust, anger, and ignorance. So they fall into the realms of hell, animals, hungry ghosts, asuras, candalas, and get born in such various houses as Kshatriya, Brahmin, Vaishya and Sudra. The karma generated by the mind leads a person, though born a human, into such lives as a cripple, lame, deaf, blind or dumb person, and to the 25 existences, where such as greed, lust, anger and ignorance reign over the mind, and the person is unable to know of the presence of the Buddha-Nature."

It takes an extraordinary amount of effort to behold our true nature (Essence of Mind, pure Mind, Unborn Mind, One Mind, Buddha-nature, Suchness, etc.).  When in the coils of our karma "reigned over by greed, lust, and anger" (i.e., the Three Poisons) we have to strive lay karma's influence aside, or the same, penetrate through it like an airplane going through heavy fog flying on instruments until we come into the bright sun.

Musings On Meditation

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 09:01 AM PST

Article by Michele Hébert

Did you know that in a typical day you think approximately 60,000 thoughts? What is even more astounding is that 90 percent of those thoughts you thought yesterday. Most of us would like to think we are constantly expressing creative thoughts and ideas, but apparently that is not the case! Psychology reveals that the majority of our thought patterns and beliefs are formed at a very early age and repeat themselves over and over throughout our lives.

Your thoughts and emotions are constantly affecting the trillions of cells in your body. When you are in a calm and relaxed state chemical messengers such as serotonin and endorphins are released from the brain into the rest of the system, creating a sense of well-being and harmony. When you are in a state of mental or emotional stress, however, the famous "fight or flight" response kicks in and the entire system prepares to defend itself.

WHAT IS MEDITATION?

Meditation is often thought of as a mystical practice from the East. The truth is that meditation has been practiced throughout the ages in many cultures and is not necessarily a religious activity. Through practice, we can learn to consciously move into a place of deep peace. The goal of meditation is to achieve union with the essence of who we really are in the deepest part of ourselves - in other words, to achieve "pure awareness," or consciousness.

What is this state of pure awareness? Great thinkers, philosophers, psychologists, spiritual teachers and scientists have written volumes and spent lifetimes considering this timeless subject. In the literature, the term most frequently used to describe the essence of our being is spirit, the animating force of life.

But where is the spirit? How do we identify with our own spirit? The outer circumstances of daily living seem to hold us on a continual treadmill of endless activity, compounded by that treadmill of our repeating thought patterns formed early in life.

PRACTICING MEDITATION

The following are thre! e genera l suggestions that will assist you in developing a meditation practice.

1. Seek out a quiet environment for a calming effect that is ideal for meditation. This quiet spot may be in your home, a place of worship, or in nature.

2. Sit with the spine erect. You can sit in a chair or in a simple cross-legged position on the floor or a pillow.

3. Let go of the need to control the experience. A receptive attitude is key to meditation.

Preceding meditation, there are several concentration practices that help to quiet the chattering mind and lead to a state of heightened awareness. Three practices that are commonly used and are particularly useful to our modern Western minds include:

watching the breathconcentration on an objectreciting a mantraWatching the Breath. This technique is also referred to as mindfulness meditation. Sit quietly observing your nostril breath. Thoughts will move through your mind, but your object of attention is your breath. Follow your breath as it flows in and out make the two breath streams even and equal. When your mind wanders (which is very natural), simply bring it back to the breath. Approach this practice as a calm observer. Watching your breath is a wonderful practice to realize that you are not your thoughts, you are something besides your thoughts.

Object Concentration. Focus your steady gaze on an object such as a flower, candle flame or even the ocean. The goal is to bring the mind to one point of focus in the present moment.

Mantra Meditation. mantra is a Sanskrit word that means "control of mind." In mantra meditation, you repeat a series of words to help you gain control of the restless mind. The selected mantra does not have to be a foreign sound. I teach mantra using the simple words "peace, harmony, well-being" from the Walt Baptiste Method of Raja Yoga.

All of these concentration practices will naturally lead to a meditative state of heightened awareness. The length of each meditation session is up to you. The important thing ! is to es tablish a daily practice. Just as you train the body through a consistent program of exercise, in meditation you train your mind through consistent practice, and you open up to new levels of mental clarity, physical health and spiritual inspiration.

Study of the Day: The National Pride That Brings Happiness

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 09:00 AM PST

Nationalism that's rooted in respect for laws and institutions, not race or religion, makes citizens the happiest, according to new research.

main thumb Ami Parikh shutterstock_54276985.jpg

PROBLEM: Previous research has shown that national pride makes people feel good about their own lives. But does what you're proud of matter too?

TEMPLATEStudyoftheDay.jpg
  • What Really Separates the Good From the Great
  • Even Your Pet Dog Was First 'Made in China'
  • As It Happens, the Gen-Xers Turned Out All Right

METHODOLOGY: Tim Reeskens, a sociologist from Catholic University in Belgium, and Matthew Wright, a political scientist at American University, categorized national pride into "ethnic nationalism," which is tied to ancestry and religious beliefs, and "civic nationalism," which prioritizes respect for a country's institutions and laws.

They analyzed the responses of 40,677 people from 31 countries to questions that related to happiness and national pride in the 2008 wave of the European Values Study, and controlled for various demographic variables, including gender, work status, and per capita GDP.

RESULTS: Though national pride correlates with personal well-being, civic nationalists were generally the happiest. The joy of even the proudest ethnic nationalists barely surpassed that of people with the least civic pride.

CONCLUSION: Nationalism makes people feel good. But the kind that makes citizens the happiest is rooted in respect for policies and institutions, not race or religion.

Dabei Buddhist Temple – The Shrine of Compassion

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 08:18 AM PST

Article by Pushpitha Wijesinghe

Chinese culture and traditions have always had a close relationship with Buddhism since the old days, and the magnificent Buddhist sites that dot the landscape stand in silent testament to this fact, receiving the veneration of the devout Chinese Buddhists even today. Hidden within the modern concrete cacophony of Hebei district of the northern Chinese city of Tianjin, there lies the revered Dabei Buddhist Temple, one such relic from yesteryear that still draws devout crowds.

This ornate shrine, of which the name 'Dabei' means 'great compassion', dates back to the 17th century. The original purpose of the Dabei Buddhist Temple was to act as the sacred reliquary for the remains of the venerable monk Tang Xuanzang who lived in the 7th century. Monk Xuanzang was a historian, traveller and scholar of renown, whose journeys to the west inspired the fabled character of Xuanzang appearing in the well known novel 'Journey to The West', made famous by the story's 'Monkey King'. The temple stands today in a well preserved condition as a testament to the magnificence of traditional Chinese architecture.

The Dabei Buddhist temple consists of two distinct eastern and western wings which came to be as results of adding more buildings to the original temple in later years. The eastern wing of the Dabei Temple precinct is home to most of the later additions, the Xuanzang Memorial Hall as well as the main entrance. In the western courtyard you will find the older buildings which made up the original temple, and the Daixioing Hall, which is the main shrine chamber of the temple. This beautifully decorated red building houses a massive Ming dynasty Sakyamuni Buddha statue with the celestial entourage. But sadly the skull of the venerable monk Xuanzang does not reside at the temple anymore as the holy relic was gifted to India in 1956.

If you're thinking of finding out more about the true Chinese spirit of Tianjin while there, Dabei Temple surely is a good place to start off. It's qui! te easy to travel to Dabei Temple when staying at a Tianjin hotel, preferably a luxury hotel in Tianjin such as the Raffles Tianjin, known for great value–for-money deals.

The art of finding abundance in frugal times

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 08:00 AM PST

In the metta sutta, the discourse on loving kindness, the Buddha teaches us how to be "skilled in goodness and know the path of peace".

These attributes can be practiced in a number of ways including kind speech, humility and also through being frugal.

We are living at a time when prices keep going up and our income, if we are fortunate enough to have one, is not keeping up.

So, how can we live abundantly while living frugally?

Here is a list of suggestions.

1. Attitude is Everything

The way we think about things creates our reality. When we think we don't have enough, we come from a place of scarcity. When we think we have what we need, we come from a place of abundance. We can choose which place we come from by choosing to think positively.

We may not have the latest technological toys, the biggest house, the fastest car or designer clothes, but we have abundance when we appreciate our five-year old laptop, our comfortable living space, our reliable Subaru and skill to do your own home repairs.

2. Take a Realistic Look at Our Financial Situation

If we don't already have a budget, now is the time to create one. List what comes in and what goes out. Take a look at what is spent on wants rather than needs. Make that list of wants shorter.

3. Become Aware of What is Really Important

Think about what is really important to you. Perhaps you are saving for a college education for yourself or your children. Perhaps you are saving for a home or a car. Find ways to put money into the bank for these items that are meaningful. Each time we bring our coffee and lunch to work, we are giving up a little now to gain a lot later.

4. Meditate on What Material Things Mean to You

Take some time to sit quietly and think about what you spend money on and what those objects mean to you. Do you have high mortgage or car payments to finance because a pricey home or new car makes you feel a certain way? Do you buy rounds of drinks for your friends because you try to keep up with them even though they make more money than you do? No number of material things can increase our self-esteem — that can only be increased by intrinsic qualities like kindness.

5. Learn About Ways to Nourish Yourself Without Spending a Lot of Money

They say "the best things in life are not things". Rather than spending money on things, spend time in natural surroundings, take a walk, and get together with friends and cook at home rather than going out to a restaurant. Read to your children or take them hiking, listen to music or create art together.

Being frugal may mean that we are giving up some material things, but it can also mean we find abundance in other ways such as spending quality time with friends and family members and finding out what is most meaningful in our lives.  One of the most meaningful Buddhist scriptures I have read is the metta sutta:

The Buddha's Words on Lovingkindness

This is what should be done
By those who are skilled in goodness,
And who know the path of peace:
Let them be able and upright,
Straightforward and gentle in speech,
Humble and not conceited,
Contented and easily satisfied,
Unburdened with duties and frugal in their ways,
Peaceful and calm, and wise and skillful,
Not proud and demanding in nature.
Let them not do the slightest thing
That the wise would later reprove.
Wishing: in gladness and in safety,
May all beings be at ease.
Whatever living beings there may be;
Whether they are weak or strong, omitting none,
The great or the mighty, medium, short or small,
The seen and the unseen,
Those living near and far away,
Those born and to-be-born—
May all beings be at ease!
Let none deceive another,
Or despise any being in any state.
Let none through anger or ill-will
Wish harm upon another.
Even as a mother protects with her life
Her child, her only child,
So with a boundless heart
Should one cherish all living beings;
Radiating kindness over the entire world,
Spreading upward to the skies,
And downward to the depths;
Outward and unbounded,
Freed from hatred and ill-will.
Whether standing or walking, seated or lying down,
Free from drowsiness,
One should sustain this recollection.
This is said to be the sublime abiding.
By not holding to fixed views,
The pure-hearted one, having clarity of vision,
Being freed from all sense desires,
Is not born again into this world.

Exercise And Stress

Article by Ray Burton

"Stress is when you wake up screaming and you realize you haven't fallen asleep yet."Kim rolled over and reached for alarm that rang much too early. It was a restless night's sleep as usual and the pain in her neck reminds her that today is going to be another long day at a job that used to give her joy.She reaches for her favorite black skirt but sighs and throws it back in the closet. It doesn't fit like it used to. Depressed, she doesn't know what to wear anymore. She feels bloated and fat. Most mornings she can go to the bathroom and count on her morning "meditation" to feel better but lately even her monthly cycle has been off.Kim opens the bedroom door and sneaks a peak at her husband; she hasn't been able to be intimate with him in weeks even though she loves him very much. She realizes that she is not interested in many of the things that she used to enjoy. She just seems to be spending most of her time irritable and tired. It doesn't help that her hair is frazzled and at 32 she keeps getting visits from the acne fairy.Kim is like a lot of women these days, overworked, stressed out and fighting depression. She hates the thought of seeing the doctor and taking medications but she doesn't know what else to try. Kim is not alone. 90 percent of all visits to the doctor are for stress related disorders.Stressed Out!Does Kim's situation sound familiar? One of the most common problems I hear from clients is that they felt fatigued, anxious or depressed. And they often have trouble sleeping, even though they are exhausted. Most of them share a common underlying theme, adrenal burnout. It's the result of racing through life with a constantly aroused sympathetic "fight or flight" nervous system. In the heightened nervous state of adrenal burnout, the body overproduces adrenaline, Cortisol and other stress hormones. Eventually, this causes the adrenal glands, the front line in the stress reaction, to show wear and tear and become depleted. This frequently leads to impairment in the thyroid gland, which! can cau se a further decline in energy level and mood. This is one of the reasons why so many women have thyroid glands that don't work well. The first step for Kim and women like her is to exercise. Taking personal time for you in of itself is a great stress reducer but when that time involves exercise the benefit is two fold. Simply going from out of shape to fit reduces stress levels by increasing a sense of well being and self confidence.Feeling confused and overwhelmed is a common stress symptom and through exercise the blood flow to your brain is improved, bringing additional sugars and oxygen and a sense of wellbeing. This increased blood flow also brings the precious endorphin. The post workout endorphins are chemicals secreted by the body after intense exercise and they make you feel great. They are a legal and healthy "high", a gift from Mother Nature. How to exercise to reduce stress is a common question that is easy to answer. The required amount of exercise time required to decrease your stress level is minimal. If you want to only apply moderate intensity to your exercise regime, then 30 minutes of walking or other exercise 5 times a week works perfectly. For those that like to exercise more intensely(getting your heart rate to 70% or more of your max heart rate), 20-30 minutes 3 times a week will do wonders for you. When starting your stress reduction exercise program make sure you include all three kinds of fitness. The first kind of fitness is flexibility. Tying in with your stress reduction theme, if you combine a tai chi or yoga type program, not only will you gain flexibility but you will also reap benefits from the meditative and calmness aspects of these disciplines. Taking as little as 10 minutes from your day to focus on your breathing and flexibility will help shift your attention from a stressful situation to your body, allowing you to cope more effectively with any situation.Short, rapid breathing is usually associated with stress, so the objective is to deliver as much oxygen to the body ! as possi ble and just relax. The second kind of fitness is cardiovascular work or aerobics. Doing your cardio will not only burn fat and reduce the health risks associated with the mid-line bulge but also increase your blood flow and vitality. The third kind of fitness is muscular work or weight lifting. Many women use weight lifting to "work out" their stress and leave their problems in a pool of "glow" on the gym floor. Lifting weights changes your shape, releases endorphins and increases your confidence in many aspects of life. Weight lifting if kept under an hour has a very positive effect on your hormone levels. It increases the fat burning ones and decreases the catabolic hormones like Cortisol and DHEA. These hormones when released repeatedly over time can cause several problems including depression and cardiovascular disease.Getting Exercise InIf you just can't find time for a structured program, then your stress is probably caused by doing too much! Here are some quick ways to beat stress during the day:Walk to work. Some might say that this will involve an extra hour a day to your schedule.I say "So what? Why are you in such a hurry?" If you do live far away, then just park the car a half mile away. You can also get off the bus before your stop and walk the rest of the way.At the mall, park your car far away. Not only will you get some exercise but you won't get dings in your paint job.Use your bike to get around. If the last time you were on a bike was when you were a kid then you forget how much fun it can be!Take the stairs instead of the escalator. When I went to Las Vegas there would be a line up in front of every escalator, and not a soul on the stairs. It's crazy that some people would wait two minutes to glide up these escalators when they could be up there in 10 seconds and get some exercise. The bottom line is that stress comes from feeling out of control. Only you can regain that control and taking care of yourself. Exercise is the first step.

Relaxing Piano Rain Music - Nature Scenes 1

Google+ plus.google.com Facebook www.facebook.com Relaxing Music Therapy For Stress Relief Relaxing music therapy is a very potent phenomenon. Sounds can soothe you, fire your imagination, bring you to the heights of ecstasy or bring you down to the depths of your soul. Music is known to relax and to help in stress relief. In the right manner, music can bring lightness into a serious situation. Relaxing music therapy can heal, soothe and bring calm tot an agitated mind. Defining "relaxing music" seems a matter of personal choice. Some people find the serene sounds of the waterfall and chirping birds relaxing while others relax with their favorite hard rock. How Does It Work? The therapeutic effect of relaxing sounds seems to have a scientific definition of its own. When the human brain is relaxed it produces more alpha brain waves. When a person is stressed out, his brain produces more beta and theta waves. Beta and theta waves are faster changing brain waves than alpha waves. Within the fight-or-flee logic of a sudden stressful situation, the human brain processes seem to speed up to act faster. This can be helpful in short, specific moments, but it is counter productive when it becomes a chronically state of being. A relaxing tune can help with its sounds typically rich in frequencies that are similar to our alpha type brain waves. The mind is always open to suggestions and thus when a person is agitated or tensed, relaxing sounds, rich in alpha like frequencies, can ...

What is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy and how can it help you

If people have problems with anxiety, depression, stress, they can expect to feel much better at the end of an eight week group. As they learn the meditation and mindfulness techniques, what they will be learning are ways to help themselves in their life to feel less worried, less troubled by fears, and to gain better control over problems like emotional overeating or insomnia, problems we know are very tied to depression and anxiety. As well, for people who have problems with pain and headaches, the group can be helpful for them especially if that pain is made worse by worry and tension.

Day Care Focuses on Teaching, and Exercise Suffers

An emphasis on learning at the expense of exercise is one of several reasons why children in many day care centers are not getting enough physical activity, a new study suggests.

Concern for the children's safety is another factor in keeping them from being sufficiently active, according to the study, which noted that 19 percent of children entering school are obese.

The study was based on discussions involving 49 child care providers in the Cincinnati area.

"Values of safety, and of early education and learning, while well-intentioned, could be keeping kids sedentary," said Dr. Kristen Copeland, assistant professor of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, who led the study.

The findings are detailed online today (Jan. 4) in the journal Pediatrics.

Barriers to physical activity

Three-quarters of U.S. children ages 3 to 6 receive care outside their homes.

Previous studies found that children often remain sedentary at child care centers, with activity levels varying from center to center. Copeland and her colleagues set out to find out why. They conducted their study between August 2006 and June 2007.

The researchers recruited child care providers from 34 urban and suburban centers, including Montessori schools, Head Start programs and for-profit centers, to participate in discussion groups. All the providers but one were women, and 55 percent were African-American.

The researchers divided the participants into nine focus groups and conducted hour-and-a-half discussions about why children may not get enough physical activity at day care.  They also conducted one-on-one interviews.

After analyzing transcripts of the interviews, the researchers determined that three factors contributed to the lack of physical inactivity at the centers.

For one, the child care providers feared that children might get hurt while playing, or felt pressure from parents to keep the children from getting injured.

For another, tight budgets meant less play equipment, such as balls or jump ropes.

Third, the providers were focused on increased efforts to prepare children for the classroom, which took away from the time the kids could spend running around outside.

"Our findings should be interpreted as exploratory, not definitive," Copeland said. "There need to be future studies about how prevalent these practices are."

Fighting childhood obesity

Dr. Russell Pate, professor of exercise science at the University of South Carolina, said, "The overriding concern is that the social norm we've created for preschools is one oriented toward preparing kids for kindergarten.

"A heavy focus on school readiness has the effect of de-emphasizing play," Pate said.

He also said many child care centers lack appropriate play areas.

"While some are well equipped and have plenty of space to facilitate activity, a lot do not have adequate facilities," Pate said.

Many states have begun to revisit their regulations and look at the programs provided at preschools, he said, but progress is most likely on smaller scales.

"I always encourage people to think about having an impact where they can most profoundly have that impact, and that's local," Pate said.

Still, he added, "I encourage people to contact the state agency that regulates child care in their state."

Pass it on: Day cares may focus more on preventing injuries and preparing kids for school than on ensuring that kids get enough physical activity.

Infants' Sleep Woes May Persist into Toddlerhood

Infants who have trouble falling and staying asleep might be at risk for persistent sleep problems throughout their early childhood, a new study suggests.

Researchers asked 359 mothers to fill out a questionnaire to learn whether their infants and toddlers had trouble sleeping.

They found that 10 percent of children were reported to have a sleep problem at some point during early childhood, and that the problems that developed in young infants tended to persist through toddlerhood.

"Research shows that if you deprive a child of sleep, it could have an impact on their daily functioning," said Dr. Hari Bandla, a pediatric sleep specialist at the University of Chicago Medical Center, who was not involved with the study.

"If they don't get enough sleep based on their age, it can change how they function day-to-day," Bandla said. "Lack of sleep or poor sleep can negatively affect their learning, a crucial part of their development."

The study is published online today (Jan. 4) in the journal Pediatrics.

Sleep is crucial for a child's development

The new study is the first to investigate the prevalence of sleep problems in infants and toddlers under age 3. About 70 percent of children 10 years or younger experience some type of sleep problem, according to the National Sleep Foundation's 2004 Sleep in America poll, which was based on about 1,500 children.

Sleep problems can include having nightmares, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, night terrors and sleep apnea, which is a sleep disorder that may cause someone to  briefly stop breathing while sleeping. These problems could result in poor sleep that makes you tired during the day.

Studies have shown that if left untreated, sleep apnea is associated with an increased risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and diabetes.

In the new study, mothers filled out questionnaires when children were 6 months, 1 year, 2 years and 3 years old.

The moms reported that 20 to 35 percent of children who had sleep problems at the start of the study continued to have problems two and half years later, whereas only 6 to 8 percent of kids without sleep problems at the start were having them later.

Night wakings and less sleep time were problems that moms commonly reported in children ages 6 months to 2 years, while nightmares and restless sleep were reported in children who were 1 to 3 years old.

Researchers also found that moms who reported that their child snored didn't perceive it to be a problem. The survey showed that 12 to 20 percent of children snored many nights during week.

"Snoring is something parents should pay more attention to," Bandla said. "It's considered a normal part of sleep, but parents should be aware that snoring is an important symptom for sleep apnea. If their child is snoring, they should talk with their doctor about it."

What parents can do

Study co-author Kelly Byars, a sleep specialist at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, recommended that parents monitor their children's sleeping habits, especially at bedtime.

"If it takes longer than 15 to 20 minutes for a child to go to sleep, there might be a problem," Byars said.

He noted that while it's completely normal for children to wake up two to four times during the night,  a child who can't go back to sleep may have a problem.

"You end up having a child and parent not getting enough sleep, which disrupts their mood, and has an impact on their daytime functioning," Byars said.

One way for parents to address a child's difficulty falling asleep is to develop a consistent bedtime schedule, Byars suggested.

He recommended putting the child to bed when they are drowsy, but awake. If the child can't fall asleep, he suggests checking on them periodically, reassuring them briefly, but avoid taking them out of their crib or bedroom.

Pass it on: Sleep problems in kids may start infancy and persist through toddlerhood.

Om Mani Padme Hum - Tibetan Incantation - Alternate Extended Version The Powers of the Six Syllables -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The six syllables perfect the Six Paramitas of the Bodhisattvas. Gen Rinpoche, in his commentary on the Meaning of said: "The mantra Om Mani Pädme Hum is easy to say yet quite powerful, because it contains the essence of the entire teaching. When you say the first syllable "Om" it is blessed to help you achieve perfection in the practice of generosity, "Ma" helps perfect the practice of pure ethics, and "Ni" helps achieve perfection in the practice of tolerance and patience. "Päd", the fourth syllable, helps to achieve perfection of perseverance, "Me" helps achieve perfection in the practice of concentration, and the final sixth syllable "Hum" helps achieve perfection in the practice of wisdom. So in this way recitation of the mantra helps achieve perfection in the six practices from generosity to wisdom. The path of these six perfections is the path walked by all the Buddhas of the three times. What could then be more meaningful than to say the mantra and accomplish the six perfections?" Some Subtle Ways To Improve Your Mind

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 10:00 PM PST

Mindfulness
by RubyJi

Article by Edward Johnson

There are many obvious and subtle ways to improve the mind, and it is normally in the not so obvious things that brain training and mental improvement success truly lies. In this article, we want to talk about some of the things that can allow your mind to truly enhance its powers, so that success becomes easier to achieve.

1. Focus Your Mind For Significantly Long Periods Of Time

Without a doubt, one of the best ways to garner and achieve real success in whatever you want to accomplish is to focus your mind for very long periods of time. This has the effect of boosting your mental performance because you are effectively binding and reinforcing the power of your thoughts more and more over time. When the mind is fully focused, quiet and can move quickly to the things you want, you know you are on the right track. It takes time to fully focus the mind, but it can be achieved when you put the right strategies and plans into place.

Focusing the mind, binding your thoughts and building thought momentum is crucial to achieving huge success in whatever you do. When you push the thoughts you have to focus and keep that going over the long haul, you will develop a permanent "zone" state that just keeps the ball rolling in your favor.

2. Make The Mind Calm And Quiet

A violent mind is definitely a barrier to success, because it means you are not having the appropriate thoughts that will help you to maintain focus. When the mind is calm, it is quiet with very little thoughts flowing through it and this is the highest state of mind which will allow you think super positive and optimistic about the achievement of your goals. As you continue to push yourself as much as possible to real success with a calm mind, everything you want becomes possible to achieve.

The best thing to achieve this is to meditate for a certain portion of each day. This meditation session will ensure that the mind is kept permanently calm, and that your thoughts aren't allowed to act as ! distract ions to high levels of performance and achievement.

3. Develop More Understanding Of How The Mind Works

Don't and never just sit in silence expecting the solution to come out of the blue, just like that. Keeping the mind totally silent requires knowledge, skill and expertise to fully put into place. If you want to enhance your understanding of just how the mind works, you will need to acquire the necessary knowledge and put it into practise sooner, rather than later.
