Kids' Weight Gains Not Due to Junk Food at Schools

The junk food sold at schools does not appear to contribute to middle schoolers' weight gains, a new study says.

In the study, no link was found between children's weight gain and the amount of time between fifth and eighth grade they attended schools that sold junk food, the researchers said. Even transferring from a school that did not sell junk food to one that did did not increase a child's likelihood of gaining weight.

The findings suggest that efforts to combat childhood obesity might best be aimed at parents and the foods available at home and outside of school.

"If we really want to address the child obesity epidemic, we can't solely focus on schools," said study researcher Jennifer Van Hook, a professor of sociology and demography at Pennsylvania State University. "Schools only represent a small portion of children's food environment," Van Hook said.

However, experts say the study does not provide the final word on school junk food and obesity. And regardless of their ultimate impact, the food sold in schools should reinforce the messages of healthy eating that kids are learning in the classroom, said Nancy Copperman, director of public health initiatives at the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System in Great Neck, N.Y.

"You'd want to have an environment that was supportive of what they were learning" about healthy eating, Copperman said.

Junk food for sale

While previous studies have looked at the link between food sold in school and childhood weight gain, the new study is the first that includes a nationally representative sample of kids and follows them over time.

The study followed 19,450 children in the United States as they progressed from fifth to eight grade. Children could change schools while in the study, but their new school had to be in the same county.

Administrators at the schools provided researchers with information on whether "competitive foods," or foods that are sold in competition with the National School Lunch Program, were available at the school through vending machines, snack bars or a la carte. Such foods included junk food, such as soda and candy bars, as well as healthy food, such as nonfat yogurt and bottled water.

Between fifth and eighth grade, the percentage of students who attended schools that offered competitive foods increased from 59.2 percent to 86.3 percent.

Children who moved into middle schools that offered competitive foods were no more likely to gain or lose weight than children who attended schools that did not offer competitive foods. In addition, children who moved out of schools that sold competitive food were no more likely to gain or lose weight than children who remained at schools that sold competitive foods.

The findings held even after the researchers took into account factors that could affect the results, including the students' age, gender, ethnicity, family-income level and the schools' revenue.

The biggest factor influencing children's weight in middle school was how much they weighed when they were younger, according to the study.

Comprehensive nutrition

While the study was rigorous, it did not look at what the children were actually choosing to eat at the schools, Copperman said. Future studies should assess whether the introduction of vending machines at schools changes kids' eating habits, Copperman said.

In addition, while a single factor, such as getting rid of competitive foods at schools, might not make a big difference in terms of a child's weight, it might have a greater influence when added as part of a larger nutrition education program, Copperman said.

"A lot of times when you just take one thing by itself and you don't put it in to a comprehensive program, you don't find a lot of effects," Copperman said.

The new study is published in the January issue of Sociology of Education.

How Food Can Affect Your Mood

Have you ever had a meal that just made you feel instantly good? You know the type I mean — comfort food that isn't great for your long-term health, but it makes you feel good at the moment.

A 1999 article in the journal Public Health Nutrition explained that such foods prompt the body to release endorphins, which trigger positive feelings.

But that's just a temporary feel-good reaction. The real effect of food on mood happens over time.

Our internal organs need nutrients in order to function properly, and the brain is no exception. We need a steady flow of nutrients from our diets to maintain good health, and a good mood.

One nutrient that may affect our mood is folate. A 2009 study in the journal Nutrition Reviews  found that as many as 38 percent of adults with depressive disorders were low or deficient in folate. Researchers wrote that the deficiency may impair the body's ability to produce neurotransmitters that act as important mood stabilizers.

Thiamine can also help improve your mood, according to the Public Health Nutrition study. Four double-blind studies showed that an increase in thiamine levels was associated with improved mood in participants. People who were deprived of thiamine showed signs of anorexia, muscle weakness, irritability and depression.

And magnesium is important to have in your diet, if you want to keep that rosy disposition, according to a 2006 article in the journal Medical Hypotheses. Patients recovered from major depression within 7 days of taking a magnesium supplement with each meal, that study reported. Though those results may not be typical, and people with major depression should seek the care of a doctor, the researchers concluded that inadequate levels of magnesium in the body can result in damage to the brain's neurons, which may cause symptoms of depression.

To combat deficiency-related symptoms of depression, eat a balanced whole foods diet filled with mood-boosting nutrients. Here are some examples:

  • Folate: Lentils are among the most folate-dense foods, so try to incorporate them into your diet. Leafy greens, such as spinach, kale and collard greens, are also high in folate.
  • Thiamine: Kidney beans are rich in thiamine as well as folate, making them a really great mood-boosting food. Sesame seeds, pistachios and macadamia nuts are also good sources of thiamine.
  • Magnesium: Wheat bran, pumpkin seeds and cocoa powder are all rich in magnesium. Do you really need another reason to pour yourself that glass of hot cocoa?

Growing miniature trees is only a small part of what the art and discipline of bonsai is all about. The literal transliteration of the Japanese word "bonsai", meaning "to grow in a small tray", cannot fully describe the depth of the art of bonsai.

The practice of Japanese bonsai has many elements. You cannot make a bonsai tree unless you have brought together a talent for horticulture, design, and expression. When you have created a beautiful tree it is something you can be proud of. Bonsai cannot exist in a single or dual dimension.

Do you think of yourself as a good gardener? A successful bonsai gardener must first be a learned and successful gardener. A bonsai gardener needs to know the basics of plant biology. A tree's roots, branches, and leaves are all part of what a bonsai artist will work with. A bonsai artist must be a bit of an tree expert. He will need to understand the light and humidity requirements of his trees. Strong and healthy trees will be the result of bringing all of this knowledge together. In the growing of a bonsai you cannot divide the bonsai gardener from the bonsai artist because you have to know both aspects to grow a proper bonsai.

The artistic dimension of Japanese bonsai is that which will ultimately create the form, the living art that is pleasing to the eye, and which creates, in miniature, a replica of a natural tree. A bonsai artist must be familiar with the way a tree grows in the wild that is subject to all of the elements of nature, and then be able to see the possibility of duplicating that in miniature There are many forms that a tree can take in nature, and they are replicated in the classic styles of bonsai. The bonsai artist may employ several different techniques, including pruning, wiring, grafting, and pinching to shape his bonsai in one of the traditional bonsai styles.

The final dimension of bonsai is the philosophical or spiritual dimension. I definitely think there must be a connection of some kind between the bonsai artist! and the natural world. Some relate the philosophy of Taoism and Buddhism to bonsai, while others relate it to Zen philosophy. Regardless of which philosophy you subscribe to, remember that bonsai is not bonsai when the third dimension is absent from the work.

Fortunately you don't have to be a philosopher or a spiritualist in order to appreciate the beauty of Japanese bonsai. Happily, even those who don't fully realize the multiple elements of bonsai can still be stirred by its beauty.

Men and women are about equal overall. Women show more highs and lows but the average comes out nearly the same:

Race doesn't have a huge effect either:

Married people are happier (but, we have to take this with a grain of salt because 1) the stats do not include people who were married and got divorced because they were unhappy, 2) as the study does reference, happy people are more likely to marry.)

...over the 1970's and 1980's, 24% of never-married adults, but 39% of married adults, told the National Opinion Research Center that they were very happy...

People involved in fulfilling work are happier. Religious people are happier too.

G-Spot: Science Can't Find It After 60 Years, Study Says

Many women swear they have one, but a new review of 60 years of sex research shows science still can't definitively find the G-spot.

Researchers have used surveys, imaging scans and biopsies of women, all trying to locate and define the presumably orgasmic area on the vaginal wall known as the G-spot. Based on a review of 96 published studies, an Israeli and American research team came to one conclusion.

"Without a doubt, a discreet anatomic entity called the G-spot does not exist," said Dr. Amichai Kilchevsky, a urology resident at Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut, and lead author of the review, published Jan. 12 in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.

Kilchevsky conceded the work is not "1,000 percent conclusive," allowing that other scientists could one day find something his team missed. But they would need new technology to do it, he said.

A half-century quest

The G-spot was named in honor of the late Dr. Ernst Gräfenberg, who in 1950 described a particularly sensitive 1- to 2-centimeter wide area on the vaginal wall. Gräfenberg's description put Western medicine on a quest to define and learn more about the spot, purported to be a few centimeters in from the vaginal opening, on the vaginal wall toward the front of a woman's body.

But Gräfenberg wasn't the first to write about such an erogenous zone. The Kamasastra and Jayamangala scripts dating back to 11th century India describe a similar sensitive area, according to the new study.

Modern surveys of women on the subject only confounded the search. From a review of 29 surveys and observational studies, Kilchevsky concluded that a majority of women believe a G-spot actually exists, although some of those women also say they can't locate it.

Other researchers have looked for physical evidence. Biopsies of tissue taken from the vaginal wall often find more nerve endings in the area of the purported G-spot than in other regions of the vaginal wall. But Kilchevsky and his colleagues also found biopsy studies with inconclusive results, and the authors point out that sensitivity in the human body isn't determined by the number of nerve endings alone.

One 2008 study used ultrasound imaging to explore the vaginal wall of women, and found evidence of thicker tissue in the area of the G-spot among women who reported having vaginal orgasms. Women who said they had never had vaginal orgasms had thinner tissue in that area. However, other imaging studies included in Kilchevsky's review couldn't find a conclusive G-spot.

Ultimately, Kilchevsky said he hopes his conclusions support women who worry they can't find the G-spot at home.

"Women who can't achieve orgasm through vaginal penetration don't have anything wrong with them," he said.

Kilchevsky doesn't think women who claim to have a G-spot are crazy either. "What they're likely experiencing is a continuation of the clitoris," he said. G-spot skeptics often point out that the tissue of the clitoris extends into the body, behind it where the G-spot would be located.

One study may yield clues

One study in the review kept "the possibility of a discrete G-spot viable," according to Kilchevsky.

A Rutgers University research team recently asked several women to stimulate themselves in a functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) machine. Brain scans showed stimulating the clitoris, vagina and cervix lit up distinct areas of the women's sensory cortex. This means the brain registered distinct feelings between stimulating the clitoris, the cervix and the vaginal wall – where the G-spot is famed to be.

Barry Komisaruk, the lead author of the fMRI study and professor of psychology at Rutgers University, advocates calling it the G-area, or G-region, instead.

"I think that the bulk of the evidence shows that the G-spot is not a particular thing. It's not like saying, 'What is the thyroid gland?'" Komisaruk said. "The G-spot is more of a thing like New York City is a thing. It's a region, it's a convergence of many different structures."

Komisaruk said that pressing on the area proclaimed to be the G-spot also presses the urethra and a structure called Skene's gland, which is analogous to the male prostate.

"Each of those areas have different nerve sites," said Komisaruk. "I think there's good enough data that a lot of women feel that that is a particularly sensitive  region."

Debby Herbenick, a research scientist at Indiana University and author of "Great in Bed" (DK Publishing, 2011), pointed out that ambiguity is nothing new in sexual research.

"I'm not sure why some people get caught up in this desire to find this anatomic thing that is the end all be all," Herbenick said.

Findings from the well-known Australian researcher Dr. Helen O'Connell show the vagina, clitoris and urethra may act as "clitoral complex," during sex, Herbenick said. Any time one of these parts is moved or stimulated, it moves and stimulates the others.

"We don't even have orgasm all figured out yet, I don't why we would expect to have the G-spot figured out," Herbenick said.

Why The Best Meditation Requires Feedback

What do you gain from meditation? Consider what could be. Imagine a "world of peace and ease," yours without changing a thing. Imagine perfect mental balance: "a balance of mind never upset by any event under the canopy of heaven." Meditation holds promise of: "Great Liberation;" "Great Knowledge;" "Great tranquility." Great promise however is rarely fulfilled.

Most who meditate gain rest and relaxation, and little more. The shortfall is due to a flaw in traditional methods. This flaw prevents the growth of practice skill, holding benefit to the beginner level. (Some get even less effective with practice.) Meditation's flaw is the lack of feedback necessary for learning. Let me explain.

Meditation: What's Missing?

To a research psychologist with an interest in skill learning, meditation is missing something. Practicing any skill leads to improvement only if you can see what you are doing. In basketball for instance, shooting hoops in darkness would only waste time because knowledge of results is required for learning. The rule applies equally to meditation.

Shooting Hoops In Darkness? Why Meditation Requires Feedback

In meditation, attention is the skill you need to develop. Benefits increase with power of concentration.

While attending however (to your breath; a mantra, etc), attention slips away unseen. Like shooting hoops in darkness, you practice meditation without knowing you're on target. You lose attention without knowing you are losing it, and find out only later when you wake from a daydream.

All traditional methods share this flaw. They lack feedback. They offer no way to monitor attention, yet amazingly, the necessary feedback is right before our eyes and has been there all along, unrecognized. Here's how to find it.

Finding Feedback Right Before Your Eyes!

Throughout meditation's long history, sensations of light have been noted. "Illumination" is described; light is seen at enlightenment. We failed however, to see the cause of ! this lig ht. We never knew it was visual feedback - the very thing needed to excel at meditation.

Light sensations are produced when focused attention holds the eyes still. Here a "fixed image" (an image held in the same place on the eyes retinas) uses up photo pigment (like exposing photographic film). Retinal fatigue follows, and with it distortion in the form of light.

This light signals attention. It tells you you're on target. When your mind wanders, your eyes wander too and the light disappears, signaling loss of attention. Use the light as feedback and you can see what you are doing. You gain the same advantage as seeing your target shooting hoops. Practice skill improves automatically. The key to great benefit is right before your eyes.

(With traditional methods, even with the best intentions, time is spent dreaming and drifting when you'd hoped for attention.)* Slow, or even no practice skill development. Not by sitting

For those who practice Soto Zen's zazen, they are more or less instructed by teachers that zazen is not about waiting for something spectacular to happen.  Enlightenment happens the minute one learns sit correctly.  According to Dogen, zazen is the enlightened practice of the Buddhas, here and now.  This is to say that if you learn to sit correctly in a Soto Zen center, you too can be a Buddha!   

Dogen's teaching of Mindfulness meditation, who also believed that zazen was "transmitted from Buddha to Buddha," finds no unvarnished precedent in the old canon of Buddhism or even in the Mahayana canon.  Certainly, one can find the word meditation (P., jhâna; S., dhyâna) in the canon but never the compound sitting-meditation.  On the same track, the notion of shikantaza (lit. just sitting) is altogether absent from the Mindfulness canon.

Dogen doesn't even take into account that the Sixth Patriarch Hui-neng understood that truth is to realized by mind not by sitting or just sitting (shikantaza).  The record shows that Hui-neng said: "The Truth is understood by the mind (hsin), and not by sitting (ts'o) in meditation" (Suzuki, The Zen Doctrine of No-Mind, 36).

If one expects to see what the Buddha saw it will be with a well trained mind; not the ability to sit for long periods of time stewing in Mara the Evil One's psychophysical (pañca-skandha) machine.  In this regard, we have the capacity to see beyond our embodied condition—we shouldn't rest content with it.  

Dogen's treatment of zazen is too concrete and fetishistic.  Do those who practice Soto Zen zazen check out Dogen's claims, for example, that zazen was transmitted from Buddha to Buddha?  In what discourse did the Buddha say this?  Was it in the Mahayana Mahaparinirvana Sutra or any other major Mahayana Sutra?  I don't think so.  Here, in fact, is what the Lankavatara Sutra has to say about dhyâna/meditation in general.

"Further, Mahamati, in order to go beyond the Dhyanas, the immeasurables, and the formless world, the signs of this visible world which is Mind itself should be discarded. The Samapatti leading to the extinction of thought and sensation does not enable one to transcend the world of particulars, for there is nothing but Mind. So it is said:

176. The Dhyanas, the immeasurables, the formless, the Samadhis, and the complete extinction of thought (nirodha)—these do not exist where the Mind alone is.

177. The fruit of the Stream-entered, and that of the Once-returning, and that of the Never-returning, and Arhatship—these are the bewildered states of mind.

178. The Dhyana-practiser, the Dhyana, the subject for it, the destruction, the seeing of the truth, —these are no more than discriminations; when this is recognised there is emancipation" (trans. Suzuki).

Most part of our Life revolves around pursuing a particular desire. That desire could be of sex, fame, money or some thing else. But the end result is that it takes away most of our life energy and we don't even realize this fact untill its too late to do any thing and even if we realize it then also most of us do not know how to get out of this desire which is sucking all my energy.

Meditation is the solution to this problem. Meditation not only gives clarity to us but also fulfills us from with in. Meditation means understanding the Mind and its content. In Meditation we do not try to reform, educate or change the mind in any way. But we try to be aware of the Mind content in a very passive way, in a very non-interferring way.

When we become aware of our thoughts, feelings, desires and passions then we actually see the stupdity of it and just seeing this brings a transformation. It changes the whole Quality of energy and that desire drops on its own and that is beauty of Meditation. All that energy which was going in pursuing that desire becomes free and fulfills from with in. Slowly as become free from the desires, More silence is experienced by us and more fulfill we feel from with in and our life becomes a blessing rather than a constant misery.

How Do We Grow Spiritually?

There are 5 principle ways to evolve spiritually, and they are all equally as important as each other. Each person will have natural preferences to one or two, but all of them contribute to our spiritual journey towards happiness and peace.

The first way to grow is through the heart. The heart is the control centre of our emotions and spiritual growth happens when we learn to forgive, love, and truly accept ourselves and those around us. The greatest teacher for all these lessons is relationships, both romantic and family relationships. These are the people that we let close, and they push our buttons, and in doing so, give us the gift of seeing where we are most intolerant, selfish, and angry for example.

The longest journey is the 7" journey from the head to the heart. We live almost entirely in the head in the west, and I have watched many people struggle with the concept of living from the heart- myself included. As you get to know and accept yourself and continue to work on your issues, you begin to be able to accept yourself and thus begins the journey into the heart. All the parts of you that you reject are the parts that keep you from living in the heart.

The second way to grow is through prayer and devotion. Religion is the traditional way to practice devotion. Service is commonly encouraged in many of the worlds' religions. Thinking about how you can be of service in the world is a very effective antidote to self, as not only are you rendering service to another, it usually boosts your self- esteem at the same time.

There has been a shift away from religion in some parts of secular society, and a growing number of people have found meditation and other spiritual practices to replace the church. I think that tuning into something greater than yourself (universal consciousness, for example) as a daily practice, will allow you to connect with the deepest parts of your being. This ritual can really enable you to open your heart and mind and can contribute to your spi! ritual e volution.

The third way to grow is through the body. "My body is a temple" is a common phrase, but in actual fact, the body is the way that we experience this spiritual lifetime. I am a spiritual being in a human body. Healthy food and good exercise like Yoga and Chi Gung, and other eastern practices will strengthen your body and keep you from illness.

Other activities make this experience of the body more enjoyable- hygiene, dancing, sport, intimacy, hiking, and so on. For some people, living in the body is too painful, so they escape with spiritual or religious addiction, or any other methods of denying their body. This could involve over- eating, alcohol, anorexia, living in the head, (over-analysing, catastrophising, depression or anger are a few examples) or body hatred. For these people, becoming grounded and learning to live in and through the body is the spiritual growth that will enable them to start on a different path.

The fourth way to grow is through the mind. This is all about understanding with the mind and expanding the mind to encompass vast concepts like "Who am I?", "What is Truth?", "What is Death?"

Studying different philosophies and pondering the big questions in life, and finding new ways to look at yourself and the world are great ways to find out who you are and what you hold true. Meditating and going within is also a good way to find yourself - it is amazing how much you can learn about yourself in a moment of silence. Meditation is a spiritual practice that can take some time to master but it does become easier as you learn to switch off the busy mind, and the benefits to your health and well-being can be incredible.

The fifth way to grow is the way of creativity. This section offers the most excitement on a spiritual journey- chanting, drumming, singing, ritual, ceremony, artwork, and many different forms of creating. This is probably the one that attracts most people at the beginning of their journey. Here is where you can try lots of different ! activiti es, and meet lots of people who are also searching for some answers. Many people stay here and are drawn to the excitement. However, some people experience this stage as a solitary time, and draw and sing on their own.

For some, this is a very personal stage that they do not choose to live out in front of others as they find their expression through whatever medium suits them. Whichever way you choose to grow, be aware of the other forms that are also a necessary part of the journey. Becoming spiritual is a profound lifestyle choice and each journey will be different to anyone else's.

Spiritual Growth is an extremely personal journey, and one that needs time, and patience, courage and honesty.

Spiritual Growth in Self Realization

Spiritual growth is following your inner passion in life the moment you discover it. Your discovery is a wisdom you get from maturity. You are no longer a kid. You don't do things anymore because other people say so. You do it because it is what you love. Following our inner calling is a journey into a level of joy, awareness, and contentment. When you drive your life with inner passion, you add meaning to living.

Before this realization, all of us just exist. We had no drive; we were like shrimps in the sea that travel where the tides bring them. We just followed the dictates of our environment and training without question. We bowed to the traditional roles and traditions given to us.

Spiritual growth is nurturing higher consciousness. You not only accept but also weigh the roles and traditions that are fed to you. You need to develop a critical mind and discern which of your training is questionable. You learn to ask why. You start to search for the consequences of your action. The golden thoughts are kept and the negative notions are rejected.

This process requires one to free the mind and body from mental and physical concerns. It is good to think about the inner desire with a clean slate. The emotions are suspended for a moment and the inner mind is allowed to converse.

In this conversation, you turn your thinking towards the need of a Higher Being to comfort you, and carry you even in trials. You open your hearts in the abundance of the Higher Power and put your 100 percent confidence.

You contemplate on the relationships you have in your life: your family and friends. Embrace these relationships that molded you. Drown in the deep love and warmth of these persons. Use them as your life stamina to achieve spiritual growth.

Set your mind into loving your work. Do you love your occupation? Is it your inner passion? If not, do not be afraid to leave and follow your heart. If it is your passion, perform your best. Be the most productive worker that you can be! .

Remind yourself to stop and enjoy life. In the midst of the chaos, break free and meditate. Smell the flowers you have neglected. Offer a smile to the people you once labeled as work machines.

Spiritual growth is about dreaming and doing things to achieve that dream. Dreaming alone is not enough. You will not go anywhere. In your deathbed, you would be swathed in joy if you know you've done your share to achieve your dream. You have lived your life in contentment.

How does the mind work?

Scientists have studied and mapped out the mind for centuries to find out how it works and the complex effects it has on us. The mind is thinking, it is logic and it has enormous capacity to store information and memory.

* It has a great associating capacity and where there are many details it can piece     them together and make sense of them. 

* It is creative, it can come up with new ideas and thinking them through.

* What the mind believes it can create with pure will power. 

* It is creative, it can come up with new ideas and thinking them through.

* It can protect you from remembering through enormous denial mechanisms, block out all negative believes about a situation, making it an illusion, fantasy or horror situation. 

* The mind can set itself in control, stopping you from feeling physical, emotional and spiritual pain.

* In a dangerous situation it fill you with adrenaline and the mind becomes totally clear to think out a rescue.

When the mind finds peace and is still, your whole body responds with an ease and relaxation. The mind is a wonderful tool and with great capacity when it is in balance.

We really do need it on a daily basis, being out of your mind isn't really possible. It would not leave that easy. In observing your mind you can gain an infinity of knowledge about yourself.

The mind only creates a problem when it is out of balance by overload and stress.

Who gives the orders?

If the mind is the executer of ideas and beliefs, who gave the initial order? Listen to your heart and you will know.

The orders comes from your heart and your mind is ready to carry out whatever the heart desire, in the best possible way.

The voice of the heart is not easy to hear, if you don't listen carefully. It comes like ! a whispe r or a hunch and if you are to busy and occupied the voice will not be heard. If the mind can't hear or understand the voice of the heart, no action will be taken.

How loud must the heart speak?

If your mind can't hear a whisper, the voice will soon get stronger and louder.Due to our believes and social background, our mind might still block the information. This can go on until it is too late or almost too late.

The importance of having peaceful times with yourself can not be stressed enough. With the time to listen to your heart's desire you will take the right decisions in your life and your beautiful mind will be delighted to carry out the orders.

Whatever success you are after in life it will always start from your heart.
