Yoga is much more that postural alignment and breathing. Yoga is about transformation, not hamstrings, but along the way we have to take care of them. Yoga is about learning from direct experience. Yoga is not a medical practice, but it has been shown to be very helpful in many ways. Yoga is especially ideal for people that are overweight, elderly, pregnant, or all three.

Yoga

Yoga teachers will often refer to "your practice," which means your individual experience with yoga as it develops over time. Yoga is intimately connected to the religious beliefs and practices of the Indian religions. Yoga, in general, is a spiritual practice or discipline that helps the individual unify his/her body, mind, and heart. Yoga will open your eyes to things you have not experienced before. Yoga is about learning from direct experience.

Body

But while stretching is certainly involved, yoga is really about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility. In this treatise Swatmarama introduces Hatha Yoga as 'a stairway to the heights of Raja Yoga', hence a preparatory stage of physical purification that renders the body fit for the practice of higher meditation. Hatha yoga attempts to balance mind and body via physical exercises, or "asanas", controlled breathing, and the calming of the mind through relaxation and meditation. Asanas teach poise, balance & strength and are practiced to improve the body's physical health and clear the mind in preparation for meditation in the pursuit of enlightenment.

Meditation

Meditation is a set of widely disparate techniques from various places whose ultimate purpose is to get you to relax deeply. In addition to practicing the poses, yoga classes may also include instruction on breathing, call and response chanting, meditation, or an inspirational reading by the teacher. As a general term in Hinduism it has been defined as referring to "technologies or disciplines of asceticism and meditation which are thought! to lead to spiritual experience and profound understanding or insight into the nature of existence. Later, with the rise of Hatha yoga, asana came to refer to all the "postures" Pranayama ("Life Force Control"): Control of prāna, life force, or vital energy, particularly, the breath Pratyahara ("Abstraction"): Reversal of the sense organs Dharana ("Concentration"): Fixing the attention on a single object Dhyana ("Meditation"): Intense contemplation of the nature of the object of meditation Samadhi ("Liberation"): merging consciousness with the object of meditation.

Yoga is primarily a way of life, not something which is divorced from life. Yoga is not running away from home and human habitation, but a process of moulding one's attitude to home and society with a new understanding. Yoga is not a turning away from life; it is spiritualization of life. Yoga is not a religion, but an aid to the practice of the basic spiritual truths in all religions.

Spiritual Awakening With the Help of Meditation

Posted: 07 Jan 2012 11:00 AM PST

Article by Belinda Daly, B.D.

Most people think of mediation as an Eastern tradition where the person sits in a circle in the lotus position and chanting mantras or humming. Apart from the soothing effect that it can bring, meditation is often said to be a path to rouse the life-force and start the passage towards spiritual awakening.

There are different schools of meditation. Every school has its own thought about meditation. Meditation also has different techniques and it can also be categorized based on their emphasis. Some meditative techniques focus on a meadow or a background observation, and there are others which emphasis on a definite item.

One of the benefits of meditation is to still the mind and relax the body. Tautness, stress and unease can be released by performing simple meditation. Apart from the internal harmony that meditation brings, it can also help to improve the body's health. Meditation is also a fantastic way of improving your focus.

The health benefits of meditation include better blood circulation; a deeper level of relaxation; an increase in workout acceptance between heart patients; normalizing blood pressure; decreases anxiety attacks and muscle tension; helps against allergies, etc...

Meditation allows you to listen to the inner-self and separate from the pressures of day-to-day life. Accepting the inner-self will lead to the understanding of our higher-self (our spiritual self). With this understanding it will increase our information and understanding on how the higher-self-unites with the cosmos. With the help of meditation, you can get the chance to tap into your internal self and observe how it sees your existence. Looking into the inner-self will provide direction towards your ultimate pleasure and realization.

It is important to remember that meditation is about listening to the inner-self; so it has to do with directing your attention and concentration. Too many distractions can make it difficult for some people to focus their attention into what is vit! al and k eeping the attention on stationary item. If you are just focused on a static object or field, one-pointedness can be experienced and could take you to a totally altered state.

If one-pointedness is achieved, you will experience ecstasy. Ecstasy is mentioned as a normal state of the soul which cannot be experienced simply in our everyday lives. In this reflective state, spirituality and also the consciousness increases its understanding of nature and the cosmos. Negative thinking and behaviour brought about by the avaricious and fast-paced world can be flushed away by directing more on your spirituality.

Confusion and Uncertainty - How NOT to Deal With It

Posted: 07 Jan 2012 08:08 AM PST

I recently wrote an article on how to deal with confusion, and it seems like there are a lot of people going through this right now, so I thought I'd expand on the topic. This is a topic I hold near and dear to my heart, because just this past year, I've gone through a lot of confusion, conflict, and growth within myself.

In the end it has led me to a significantly better place. I'm happier, more at peace, and even more able to handle the confusion ahead.

It still isn't easy, but it's easier, much easier. When you stop fighting, you stop suffering.
  • Addiction
One of the reasons people have addictions is because they experience pain and they want to escape.

While confusion is not the only pain they experience, it is certainly one of them. This doesn't have to mean drug habits, it could be eating, watching TV, playing video games, and anything else that you feel the need to escape to in order to numb your pain.

The good news is that you can change. Research has now shown that your brain works like a muscle. When you stop feeding one habit, it slowly starts withering away, even if you try and fail over and over again.

  • Denial
I'm sure you know people who are in complete denial about what they have to do. You clearly see what they need to do, but they don't.

Sometimes you have to allow people to have their own experiences, but you also have to notice how you yourself go into denial. We have an easy time looking at others and seeing what's wrong, but the truly challenging part is looking inside.

  • Poor Me
I ! used to be great at feeling like I was the victim, and that the world was against me. Luckily for me, I've let go of a lot of that.

There's still some left that needs to dealt with, but I'm okay with taking one step at a time. This isn't about perfection, it's about constant improvement.

    Kaizen.

Do you go into poor-me-mode when you don't know what to do, or what your future looks like? What would happen if you just made peace with confusion and uncertainty as states of being? Where did you learn that it's bad to not know?

  • Thought Loops
Thought loops is what I call it when you lie down and start playing movies in your head of everything that can go wrong. This seems more likely to happen when you feel confused and uncertain than at any other time, because if you don't know what will happen, it will probably be bad, right?

What most people forget is that uncertainty opens up the field of possibility. And another crucial part is that even if something bad happens, how do you know that it isn't exactly what you need to get what you want in the end?

You just can't know, so you might as well accept it.

  • Grasping
The more you can allow uncertainty and confusion to be, the better off you will be, because it is a time of learning on a deeper level than just your conscious mind. Each time you do this, you become more comfortable with it, and you notice that you don't have to know everything all the time. You realize that it is through confusion and uncertainty that new growth happens, because if you want certainty, you are only reliving the past.

In the end, we all want uncertainty (and confusion), but we don't know it yet.

So step boldly where you have never gone before, and, dare I say, enjoy it!

Relaxation Methods For Anxiety:Profound Techniques For Real Guided Meditation Seekers

Posted: 07 Jan 2012 04:01 AM PST

Article by Donald Barrett

Guided meditation provides a fast, simple and effective way of uniting with your inner source of wisdom and well-being. Your mind and body are wise and capable of getting exactly what you need at any given time.

It's no secret that there are a host of benefits for you to experience when you meditate and believe it or not many of those same benefits can be experienced through a guided or led meditation as well.

Bringing your attention to your breath - this helps engage your parasympathetic nervous system which helps you relax. As you inhale and exhale with awareness your mind and body start to relax.

Unless you are individually guided in this path, it is too tough for anyone to grasp the entire philosophy of the art he or she is practicing. Some people contemplate joining a group to solve the problem, but really it helps little. The only solution that follows is to get a professional who can guide you individually in this business. During the course of the training be sure to let your instructor know your personal needs from meditation, so that he or she can alter his or her own schedule to optimize the learning for you so that you gain maximum benefits.

The following guidelines may help you somewhat before you prepare yourself for guided meditation:

Be very specific and objective about your meditation goals. For this, you first need to know what you really want from the process.

Guided meditation is within you- look at yourself; you are guiding yourself... accept it. Read articles; consult a book find a teacher- there are many. Teacher will merely indicate, will show you the way-- now ball is in your court.

Speak with the teachers of guided meditation and find out a suitable program for yourself.

Simply stated, when it comes to practicing a guided meditation on a daily basis what you will discover is that the benefits go well beyond the 3 benefits that you have heard about in this article. So what are you waiting for go ahead and begin your practice! of medi tation sooner rather than later.

Practice the techniques for a while and get to know if they are really working for you up to the satisfactory level. You are the one who would know best.

You will feel the changes.

The Health Enhancements Of Meditation

Posted: 07 Jan 2012 03:00 AM PST

Article by Sweigert Adeyemo

There continues to be an growing interest in alternative healing methods that place their influences from the area of complementary, herbal, and alternative treatment. One of the healing methods that have been analyzed with much success continues to be meditation. Meditation is a process of breathing, led imagery, statements and affirmations, and 'self-talk' made to induce positive states of well-being, wholeness, and ultimately, healing in a person.

Meditation might be a series of daily spoken or written claims and statements and affirmations, or incorporated with yoga, walking, or other kinds of exercise to produce a total holistic affect. The overall benefits of meditation are evidenced in positive changes within the body, mind, and the spirit. Most of all meditation allows anybody being a restored and re-vitalized person without all the expenses of gyms, fitness teachers, and even sometimes, professionals. It might be a self-driven effective personal practice that might help anybody and results is visible immediately.

The basic premise of meditation is self-guidance and self-inventory. The first steps of meditation are designed to allow individuals to get in touch with the inner person to in order to make outward changes. Meditation is rooted in the spiritual knowledge that the knowledge of self begins healing and that self-healing is possible. This of course can be a challenge to many, as most of us have a hard time understanding that humans and especially ourselves are flawed. Not flawed by design, but flawed in our perceptions of the world and how we interact with it. Meditation allows us to take a second look at how we view the world and how we respond. Self-inventory and the creation of affirmations to change outward results forces the person to spend more time re-creating a more positive and whole person who can positively interact with the world. Meditation can be a means toward self-promotion and self-healing, and even forgiveness.

Meditation makes it possible for th! e negati ve occasions of the past to become placed in perspective and eradicated from your present view of the world. Led imagery makes it possible for the meditation to solve past discomfort, and hurt, and allow the healing process to start, changing old problems, anger and discomfort with positive resolve, and emotional in addition to spiritual freedom to start in a new place with people and situations. In meditation, it is understood that good results can come and good occasions will occur due to the fact the person will this directly.

Buddhist Chant as Sound Therapy

Posted: 07 Jan 2012 02:00 AM PST

Article by Joshua M. Smith, PhD

Buddhist chant is an incantation or hymn, similar to Gregorian chant. Almost all schools of Buddhism incorporate Buddhist chant, or shomyo in Japanese, to one degree or another. It is often said that singing and even just listening to chant can bring about a spiritual wellbeing via the sound vibrations emitted.

I have had an interest in Buddhist music ever since my encounters with the shakuhachi, the Japanese bamboo flute, which is said to have its roots in shomyo. I chant every morning at the Shingon temple where I am a monk at in Nara, Japan, as well as have frequent group classes in the evenings. Often during ceremonies I mix my shakuhachi sounds with the chanting. Within Buddhist chant, various instruments souch as bells, gongs, conch shells (Horagai) etc. are used so the tone colors of the shakuhachi fit well together. The slight variation in pitch among the chanters and the shakuhachi works well together as an overall unison.

A few of the most difficult things to grasp are how to read the notes and intonations as well as there being 2 different styles of chanting the same song; Ryokyoku and Rikkyoku styles. As ordained monks there are many thick books of chants, however, the lay practitioners usually chant the Heart Sutra (Hanya Shingyo), and the repetition and unison of the voices has a very calming effect.

Shomyo originated with the esoteric schools of Buddhism, the Tendai and Shingon schools. In general, Tendai chants have more varying melodies and a wider tone scale, as where many of the Shingon schools keep the traditional less melodic intonations. Many of the more popular and newer schools of Buddhism refer to their songs as shomyo also, but are actually that temple's prayers set to a modern western melody, not unlike what you would hear at a Catholic mass for example.

In Shingon chant it is not always necessary to understand the exact meaning of the prayer. Sometimes it is believed that there is an inherent force to the sound and vibrations of the words, and t! he repet ition of that is more powerful than focusing on what the words mean. Sounds can speak more directly to us than words sometimes. Often our interpretation and experiences associated with certain words alter the way we comprehend it, distracting us along the way. A historically famous Tendai priest even went so far as to use the shakuhachi in place of chanting. It was said that he felt a strong connection with the sounds and he communicated more directly using the bamboo flute. This page has a more detailed information about Japanese music and the shakuhachi:

http://www.grand-island-serene-gardens.com/japanese-music.html

Buddhist chant can be seen as quite complicated, but if you understand it as a form of musical meditation where the sounds are what connects us to each other and nature, then it is easier to open our senses and feel the music for what it really is; a communication with the universe.

A Secret Meditation for Law of Attraction Followers

Posted: 06 Jan 2012 11:00 PM PST

Article by Gary Evans

Looking to move to that all important next level? Are you seeking a method that can turbo charge your ability to manifest?

You're in luck! By using my meditation you will undoubtedly manifest things more quickly and also experience more enjoyment when meditating.

Meditation is commonly mistaken for some mystic ritual or associated with monks and highly religious individuals. In my opinion, if you're not meditating then you're not connecting with your inner-being which means you will always have a partial detachment from the power that is natural to you.

When you focus your mind on something repetitive you automatically begin to quieten your mind which is the same as saying you are meditating. You reach a similar meditative state when you're watching the television or listening to music. Your attention is in one place only and that is all meditation is. The difference is that when you purposely meditate, you are relieving your body and mind of many other constraints that it would normally be dealing with if you are watching television or listening to music. Once relieved of these, you can slip into a deeper state of concentration.

Find a comfortable area that you may sit quietly and will not be disturbed. It's best to unplug the phone and turn off your mobile when you're meditating to avoid all distractions. You can meditate in any position you like as long as your spine and head are kept straight in a vertical line.

Next, close your eyes and start to notice your breathing. Take a couple of deep, but slow, relaxing breaths in and out. Focus your mind on breathing and nothing else. When thoughts and images come into your mind (and they will) just release them and do not give them your attention, focus only on your breathing. Do this for about 5 minutes.

When you feel comfortable to begin, start to visualize what it is that you want. Is it a new home? A different lifestyle? Or a new relationship? Start to think and dream about what it is that you want.

Real! ly get i nto the feelings of the visualization and enjoy the moment. Live it just for a few minutes whilst you're in your meditative state. Think only about what it is that you want and pay no attention else where. For just a few moments, believe that what you are seeing in your mind is already yours.

Don't worry if you don't believe it at first, just keep practising the thought and visualization until it becomes a very familiar environment to you.

Once you've visualized all of your desires for about 20 to 25 minutes you can then gently bring yourself out of the meditation and feel good about yourself for completing masses of work in those 25 minutes!

Repeat this meditation for the rest of your life. No seriously, why wouldn't you want to keep doing something that has two marvellous effects …

It brings you more joy and you're moving yourself one step closer to your desires every time you do this meditation.

This meditation is one the most powerful manifestation techniques that I've ever come across. As simple as it may seem, the rewards that you will reap from doing it everyday are insurmountable.

Yoga For Weight Loss - How To Lose Weight With Yoga

Posted: 06 Jan 2012 10:00 PM PST

Article by Franchis Adam

Excess weight gain has become a phenomenon in today's age, when lifestyles have become sedentary, and food more liberal with extra calories. Today our children prefer T.V. over their friends and play, merely a reflection of their parents who also somewhere prefer T.V. over socializing or even over spending time with their children (if they spend some time surely some running around will help burn some calories). These are only a few factors, which have resulted in increasing amount of people with the problem of excess weight or obesity. The practice of yoga makes the body strong and flexible and helps to improve the overall function of the digestive, respiratory, circulatory and hormonal systems. Yoga assists us in releasing mental stress bringing clarity and peace of mind. Yoga opens a door into your heart and helps you to practice self-love and self-acceptance so that you become emotionally stable. But this only the beginning of a life-long journey towards your core, the realization of your true, essential self, the ultimate aim of yoga. Yoga has helped me to lose a substantial amount of weight. In my experience, when you remember who you are and align yourself with what is truly important to you, you will return to your true nature of health and happiness and your body will return to it's perfect weight.

Taking deep breath in yoga is very useful to enhance the oxygen intake to the body cells containing the fat cells in body. Other yoga asanas like tree pose, sun salute, triangle pose, locust pose, camel pose, wind releasing pose, cat pose, angle pose, Hero pose II and I, aeroplane pose are also useful to reduce body weight.

Why, then, don't more people practice yoga.

People think of yoga as being passive and mystical and not relating to to their lives. Yoga improves both the physical body and the mind. It's widely practiced in Eastern countries but not so in the West. Only 2% of the American adult population practice yoga.

Obesity and Yoga

* Yoga has considered a! ll aspec ts of Obesity (physical, emotional and mental) * Regular practice of Yoga and controlled life style reduces obesity (weight is reduced). * Yoga makes human being agile, efficient and slim. * Yoga is suitable for people in any age group.

Kundalini, which was introduced to this country in 1969 by Yogi Bhajan, is more active, combining various modes of breathing, movement and meditation. It is based on the idea that body energy that's coiled below the base of the spine can be tapped so that it travels upward through different energy centers or chakras until it reaches the head. At this point one arrives at one's highest potential.

Some of us have a habit of eating between the meals. Here also Yogic practices come handy. One can take the help of Yogic aids when feeling tempted in between the meals. In such situations one may intentionally turn to Yoga rather than looking for some snacks. The knowledge and power derived from Yoga also makes us aware of problems like obesity which may prevent the individual from overeating. Such is the magic and charisma of Yoga that you tend to attain a balanced weight i.e. if your weight is normal, it will remain the same where as in case of underweight, you will gain weight. Yoga for weight loss can also be used in another way even if you don't have an eating disorder. It can tune your mind and body to be in complete synchrony. Even if you are otherwise completely healthy, yoga for weight loss and overall balance of your body and mind can still obviously be a good thing.

How to Have a Spiritual Awakening Through Meditation

Posted: 06 Jan 2012 09:00 PM PST

Article by Kip Mazuy

In order for you to have a spiritual awakening, surrender has to happen. You need to surrender at the deepest level of your being.

So we want to get you out of your mind, out of the controlled idea that you are an intelligent and together person and into what is here in this moment beyond such ideas. The mind is always trying to put things in order. But once the mind puts things in order, you are out of touch with what is here.Unconsciously, the mind has an image of how a perfect person should be and the mind tries to emulate that. Not on a conscious level, you are not intentionally doing it. But once you do it, then spiritual awakening cannot touch you. Life cannot touch you.So the first step in surrender is to be aware of this. Be aware of how the mind tries to put everything into neat little piles of understandings and justifications. The second step in surrender is to allow yourself to become undone. Allow yourself to be naked and raw in this moment. Experience with pure honesty what is here in this moment without holding on to any ideas of what that might be. It is this honest awareness that is the key to spiritual awakening. We refer to ourselves as someone in time; someone with past experiences and memories. But I want you to go beyond that thought construct and truly experience what is here, what is here beyond all thought.

Because what is here is only here now and then it is gone. There is such freedom just in that realization. You can only feel this moment. You can't do it with the mind, you have to feel it; beyond emotion, beyond the intellect.Surrender to what is here completely. Give up being together and simply fall apart in this moment and experience what is left. Then you will truly experience peace. You will truly have a spiritual awakening. You will realize that silence that is underneath everything; that silence that only fully reveals itself when you have come undone.

This is extremely difficult to do without the presence of a fully enlightened teacher. If you si! t with a fully enlightened teacher, you receive Shaktipat- the actual energy that awakens you at the very core if your being. This makes the process of spiritual awakening a hundred times easier.

But you can also receive this same shaktipat from a unique Shaktipat Meditation CD. Simply by listening to meditation music with a unique shaktipat sound technology, that same bliss is awakened in you.

Tim Tebow's "Tebowing" is religious obnoxiousness

Posted: 06 Jan 2012 08:00 PM PST

I like Tim Tebow.

Never met the Denver Bronco's quarterback, but when I've seen him interviewed on TV (Jon Stewart talked with him on The Daily Show fairly recently) Tebow comes across as humble and unassuming.

But that's when he isn't "Tebowing," an irritating in-your-face display of his Christianity, where Tebow gets down on one knee, with his elbow resting on his other knee, head bowed in a prayerful stance. This has become a craze, with a web site devoted to Tebowing (including a Top Ten, naturally; the dog doing a modified version of the posture was the only photo that appealed to me).

So I don't like Tim Tebow's overt religiosity.

It would be obnoxious to me anywhere. Displays of God-praise on the athletic field strike me as particularly inappropriate. Seven years ago I pleaded, "Please, God, no more sky-pointing."

The worst example I saw featured an individual sky-pointing as a Red Sox "idiot" (in this case, a term richly deserved) rounded the bases after a home run, followed by a communal sky-pointing after he reached the dugout. He and a few other Christian teammates crouched, bent their heads together, and then pointed a bunch of index fingers at, presumably, where they think heaven lies.

I never saw God similarly thanked after a Red Sox player struck out or made an error. The idea that God is aiding the fortunes of one team, and not the other, is obviously ridiculous. Given that, in the big scheme of things, major league sports also is ridiculous, this sky-pointing business wouldn't be a big deal for me except…it reflects an overall attitude among a disturbingly large number of Christians that God plays favorites.

George Bush clearly feels that God has chosen him to bring freedom to the Middle East, and that the United States has a special God-given mission in the world. This is no different in kind from a baseball player believing that God wanted and enabled him to hit a baseball out of the park, or to strike out an opposing player. Yet if God has the power to bring things that people consider "good," then God also has the power to bring "bad" things.

A few weeks ago I was walking by a bigscreen TV in our athletic club just as TIm Tebow fumbled and the other team recovered the football. I watched for a bit longer to see whether Tebow made any overt praise of God at that moment.

Nope. Apparently God is only worth praising when good things happen, mistakes aren't made, hopes come true. Which is horrible theology.

Don't Tim Tebow and his Tebowing buddies realize how egotistical their Christian faith is? It's all about them. Life revolves around them. If what they wanted to have happen actually does, then God picked them to be winners of the good fortune lottery.

This sounds nastily divisive. That's because it is.

When an athlete thanks God for catching a touchdown pass, or hitting a home run, he believes that the highest divinity wanted him to triumph over those bozos on the other team. "God plays favorites, and I'm the Favored One!"

Such is, of course, exactly how Christianity looks upon non-believers. So I guess it isn't surprising that Tebowers are so egotistically judgmental, because that's the core attribute of their entire religion. Thus saith Tim Tebow:

Tebow once told a group of prisoners: "If you have Jesus Christ in your heart, you are going to spend eternity in heaven. If you don't, you're going to spend eternity in hell."

I don't watch much pro football. So my viewing of Tim Tebow's quarterbacking mostly comes from highlights shown on the evening news sports segment. Recently Tebow was shown throwing some interceptions that lost an important game (though the Broncos still backed into the playoffs).

As noted above, I turned to my wife and said, "I'd feel a lot better about Tim Tebow if he pointed to the sky or knelt down in thankful prayer every time something really bad happens to him on the football field, rather than him doing his Tebowing only when God supposedly gives him what he wants."

Even better, though, would be for Tebow to just act like a normal human being. Do your best. Accept what happens, win or lose, with as much balance, grace, and equanimity as possible. Get mad when you feel angry. Then get over it. Be happy when you feel good. Then get over it.

Making a cosmic happening out of a freaking football play is absurd. I'll quote myself again:

In one of his sermons Meister Eckhart put it nicely: "Now I hear you ask, 'How do I know that it is God's will? My answer is that if it were not God's will even for a moment, then it would not exist. Whatever is must be his will. If God's will is pleasing to you, then whatever happens to you, or does not happen to you, will be heaven."

Last night I found Johnny Damon's first inning home run to be the epitome of genuine athletic good character. The long-haired Damon didn't raise a finger, or even display much emotion. He simply ran around the bases with his head down. When he got to the dugout he exchanged a few hugs and high-fives with his teammates, but he looked like a calm, centered man who knew that all he had done was hit a first-inning home run in a baseball game that was a long way from being decided. And it is a game for God's sake, not the Second Coming.

Thank you, Johnny, for acting like a real Christian, whether or not you are one. I hope your attitude rubs off on your ebullient sky-pointing brethren.

First Person: I'm Becoming a Happier Spender

People who are not too uptight about money and yet not very materialist, tend to be the happiest, according to psychologists.

A study out of Empire State College, State University of New York, show people tend to be one of four kinds of spenders. While reading the study by psychologist Miriam Tatzel, I thought about where my husband and I fit in. I realized we are both the kind of people who spend money on experiences. And, according to the study, that makes us the happiest kinds of spenders.

I'm not sure how a person changes from one kind of spender to another, but maybe awareness is the first step to being happier.

Big spenders

The least happy group of people are the materialistic, but not frugal. In the study, this group of people were the most likely to use an unexpected $ 25,000 of windfall money to buy things. I relate least to this category. They are more likely to spend more money for travel and have an irrational credit card use. Although I have friends who definitely fall into this category, I've never viewed them as "least independent," and having a "weak sense of personal uniqueness."

Value seekers

A former colleague used to spend hours finding deals on high-priced items. She was a bit of an extreme couponer. The value seekers are both materialistic and frugal. These "price experts" aren't as happy because they have a conflict between frugality and materialism. This type reminds me of my senior citizen friend who justifies spending more money than she has by saying she used her senior discount or got it on sale.

Non spenders

I can relate somewhat to the non spenders who are frugal and not materialistic. I've gone on a few "no spending challenges," to save money. Non spenders have the least irrational use of credit card and tend to save windfall money. They are also least inclined to spend money on travel. The only person I can think of who is a non spender in my life is our youngest son. He wants to buy something about twice a year.

Experiencers

If left to our natural inclinations, my husband and I as well as our oldest son, pay little attention to price. The experiencers are not frugal and not materialistic. My husband and I are both extremely independent and we don't try to impress others with our stuff. We do tend to spend more money on travel experiences and hobbies.

I never realized my husband and I are so similar before because we spend money on vastly different experiences. Luckily, having a non spender in our family keeps us grounded.

What is Holistic Meditation?

Posted: 06 Jan 2012 05:00 PM PST

Article by Jeff Clark

Alternative methods of ensuring wellness have been around for thousands of years and they have been enjoying a resurgence in recent decades. Holistic meditation, for example, is becoming a favorite among fitness enthusiasts, thanks in part to the increasing popularity of yoga, tai chi and qigong. But what exactly is holistic meditation and what are its benefits? Here are things you need to know:

Holistic meditationMeditation is an important component of many of the world's religions and other spiritual disciplines, including Buddhism, Hinduism, Dervish and Asceticism. It is also practiced by followers of the New Age Movement.

The term 'holistic' is derived from the Greek word 'holos', meaning whole, total or entire. It is the belief that everything involved in a system are part of a whole and that understanding any one part or component requires understanding its relationship to the rest of the components.

Holistic meditation is part of a philosophy that focuses on the view that physical, spiritual and mental aspects should be considered in order to achieve healing and optimum well-being. Only when a balance exists among these three aspects will a person experience 'wholeness' and achieve healing through meditation.

Meditation is believed to encourage a strong body-mind connection. By meditating, people become more attuned to their bodies and develop a good understanding of what makes them healthy physically and mentally.

Uses of holistic meditationHolistic meditation is one of the top approaches recommended by practitioners to people who wish to use it to address a medical, emotional or mental problem. It is a common component of a system of healing used for patient care, particularly because meditation helps reduce stress, increase calmness and encourage people to view things from a different perspective. As a result, they do not easily give in to anger, frustration, jealousy and other negative emotions.

Holistic meditation is also often reco! mmended for people who are physically ill. It is believed that a calm, relaxed mind helps facilitate proper healing. Meditation is also believed to encourage a better mental state, allowing people to relax more and focus less on the negative issues.

Holistic meditation is not a method to treat diseases or conditions of the body or mind. The approach is to take care of all interconnected components involved in the mental, physical and spiritual aspects of a person so as to achieve and maintain good overall health. With holistic meditation, the process of healing does not only focus on the disease or condition but also on the overall wellness of the person.
