A conscious effort to be thinner is different from wanting to have a healthy lifestyle. Choosing one over the other seems to be the choice many struggle with everyday.

With a fast-faced lifestyle, most people are unaware that what they put into their system is not going away anytime soon due to lack of activity that would lead them to sweat or use up their excesses. High levels of stresses, due to demands of corporate life lead people to be addicted to caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. They fail to function without these but abhor the resulting excess baggages that come from emotional eating. The latter being what they use to compensate for their lack of drive and esteem.

Most losing weight tips require an activity. The first of the many losing weight tips that people should do is to have a change in perspective. The stressors in their lives often dictate what time they eat, the quality of food that they do manage to eat and even how they get around. Most of them try to fit it in their hectic schedules while others forget to eat when their body needs it and end up binging when they do have the time to eat. And it is not just the time of eating but the kind of food they end up craving. Most are processed food of course, made to increase one's hunger rather than fill it up. The increased intake of empty calories leads to weight gain.

And it doesn't end there. Lack of exercise would push one to becoming lethargic and listless. The more stressful their work environment, the less they are able to find time to exercise. They believe that the physical effects are too much to put on their already worn out body. They do not realize that in the gold mine of losing weight tips, exercising is the one thing that has two benefits, they are able to have a healthier heart and they can manage their weight in the long run.

Unwillingness to spend time to exercise can be detrimental to the mental health of an individual. When one exercises at least three times a week, they are able to have ti! me to th ink of nothing for an hour or two. This time is when their mind can be conscious but not pressed to produce ideas. It is important to let the body take over once in a while so that the mind can be on the go when one chooses to get creative again.

Happier individuals are less likely to spend too much time indoors, they are able to socialize and interact, letting them have more chances to have physical activities with friends and acquaintances. This way, the kind of routine that leads to gaining lazy weight is broken.

Dancing is among the best losing weight tips people have forgotten. It doesn't matter if it is in a class or in the privacy of your own room. As long one does what releases endorphins then there is an increased chances that they are able to lower their weight in a longer period of time. That is a solid fact.

''Christmas morning tends to be a rush in most households - mums are struggling with the dinner, children are unwrapping presents, and dads are finding batteries to go in the toys.

''It's important to try and enjoy those more hectic moments as well, as these often make the funniest Christmas memories and will be told at Christmas' for years to come.''

Understandably, three quarters of those polled claim the Christmas dinner is largely responsible for any stress endured on the morning of the 25th.

Ensuring all foods are cooked and ready at the same time provides endless worry for mums and dads up and down the country.

But once dinner is on the table, 56 per cent of people reach their happiest point of the day.

But when it comes to being even happier at Christmas, 36 per cent say they would feel more relaxed and content if they were able to celebrate with just their immediate family.

A further third would prefer it if someone else could cater for them on the 25th December, while 27 per cent relish the thought of being able to put their feet up all day long.

Other items on the Christmas happiness 'wish list' were having a personal shopper to get all the presents, ditching the Christmas roast for an easier option and naturally getting more presents.

One in five said Christmas would be better if only the children would just sleep in a bit longer.

But despite a lack of sleep it seems family time is what counts on Christmas Day - a staggering 71 per cent said that's what it's all about for them.

The spokesman for Three Barrels Brandy added: ''It's sometimes easy to get carried away with the planning and worry that comes with arranging Christmas, and before you know it it's been and gone.

''On Christmas Day, most adults are more concerned about creating a happy day for everyone else, but it is important that people can enjoy the holiday for themselves as well.''

Have you ever felt that we are rushing through life, that we get so caught up in busy-ness that life is passing us almost without notice?

I get this feeling all the time.

The antidote is simple: sitting and watching.

Take a minute out of your busy day to sit with me, and talk. Take a moment to imagine being in the middle of traffic — you're driving, stressed out by the high amount of traffic, trying to get somewhere before you're late, angry at other drivers who are rude or idiotic, completely focused on making your way through this jungle of metal on a ribbon of asphalt. Now you've gotten to the end, phew, you made it, wonderful, and you're only a few minutes late … but did you notice the scenery you passed along the way? Did you talk to any of the other people along your path? Did you enjoy the ride?

No, probably not. You were so caught up in getting there, in the details of navigating, in the stress of driving, that you didn't have time to notice your surroundings, the people nearby, or the wonderful journey. This is how we are in life.

Now imagine that you pulled over, and got out of the car, and found a grassy spot to sit. And you watched the other cars zoom by. And you watched the grass blown gently by the wind, and the birds making a flocking pattern overhead, and the clouds lazily watching you back.

Sit and watch.

We don't do this, because it's useless to do something that isn't productive, that doesn't improve our lives. But as Alan Watts wrote in The Way of Zen:

"As muddy water is best cleared by leaving it alone, it could be argued that those who sit quietly and do nothing are making one of the best possible contributions to a world in turmoil."

It's interesting, too, what we see when we sit and watch. We will notice others rushing, and worried, and angry, and in them see a mirror of ourselves. We will notice children laughing (or crying) with their parents, and remember what we're missing when we rush to improve our lives.

More interesting is what you see when you sit and watch yourself. You learn to step outside yourself, and act as an observer. You see your thoughts, and learn more about yourself than you ever could if you were rushing to take action. You see your self-doubts, and self-criticism, and wonder where they came from (a bad incident in childhood, perhaps?) and wonder if you are smart enough to let them go. You see your rationalizations, and realize that they are bullshit, and learn to let those go too. You see your fears, and realize what hold they have over you, and realize that you can make them powerless, by just sitting and watching them, not taking action on them.

By sitting and watching, you come to know yourself.

You learn the most valuable lessons about life, by sitting and watching.

And as we know from the observer effect in physics, by watching, we change what we watch.

Take a few minutes today, to sit and watch. It might change your life.

Work Stress Causes 10 Percent of Strokes

Mental stress at work may increase the risk of stroke, a new study says.

The results show that among men in middle and high social classes, those who experienced psychological stress at work were about 1.4 times more likely to have a stroke than others who did not.

All in all, that means about 10 percent of strokes in this group can be attributed to work stress, the researchers said. The rest of the strokes were related to other risk factors, such as smoking, high blood pressure and diabetes.

The findings are based on information from nearly 5,000 men ages 40 to 59 living in Copenhagen, whom researchers surveyed in 1970 to 1971 and followed for 30 years (until 2001). The men were given a physical exam and answered questions about their alcohol consumption, smoking habits and if they received treatment for diabetes. Men were not included in the study if they had a history of heart disease or a heart attack.

Researchers asked, "Are you under psychological pressure when performing your work?" and the men responded with "rarely" or "regularly."

During the study period, 779 men suffered a stroke, and 167 died from one.

The participants were divided into five groups based on social class, which took into account education level and job position.

No link was found between psychological stress at work and men in the two lowest classes.

Among men in the three highest classes, the risk of stroke increased 38 percent among those who reported experiencing stress at work regularly, compared with those who reported it rarely, the researchers said. The risk was most significant for younger men, likely because these men were exposed to work stress for a longer period. (Men who were among the oldest at the start would have retired shortly after the study began.)

It's not clear why the link was found only for men in higher social classes, according to the study. It may be that high-status jobs come with increased mental stress. Fewer men in the lower classes reported regular psychological work stress, the researchers said.

The study was published in the December issue of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

In mantra and breath meditation, you focus on a word or your breath and try to empty your mind of everything else. This mental clearing is what most people mean when they refer to meditation.But there's another kind of meditation, a practice Buddhists call vipassana or sometimes called mindfulness, or insight meditation.

Mindfulness-based meditation is actually based on Buddhist Vipassana meditation. It was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in 1979 as a method for people to cope with chronic pain. Kabat-Zinn's Mindfulness meditation involves being "mindful" or aware of the continuously passing parade of sensations and feelings, images, thoughts, sounds, smells, and so forth of your immediate surroundings without becoming involved in thinking about them. Mindfulness meditation involves simply experiencing whatever thoughts goes through the mind, without reacting to them. By training your mind to observe, without reacting or thinking your mind becomes clear, and calm.Mindfulness meditation could be said to be opposite of concentrative meditation, in that while concentrative meditation involves zooming in and focusing on an object, sound or thought, when performing mindfulness meditation instead of narrowing your sight to a selected field you will be aware of the entire field. The intent of mindfulness meditation, besides clearing and calming the mind, is to (1) enable you to stop and appreciate life for all it has to offer and (2) to develop a skill that enables you to respond less impulsively and more effectively.

Types of Mindfulness Meditation

There are two kinds of mindful meditation - formal and informal. Yoga and Tai chi are two good examples of the formal type. In a yoga class, and during tai chi, participants focus intently on their breathing and the postures, moving slowly from one position to the next, exquisitely aware of their feelings during the process. Practitioners are taught to concentrate on their breathing and i! ts passa ge through the body as they dismiss any distracting thoughts.

Informal mindfulness meditation involves incorporating mindful approaches to moments of everyday life. A person takes a simple situation and merely observes it without promoting thoughts in a particular direction.

How to Perform Mindfulness MeditationThe practice of mindfulness meditation requires the person to be fully conscious of his or her surroundings while simply observing thoughts without making judgments about them and then moving on. The goal of mindfulness meditation is not to go into a trance, but rather to remain fully mindful and observe all of the surroundings but without acting on them. The key is to remain peacefully conscious without allowing your mind to wander or react to the thoughts. The easiest way to begin to train the mind for this type of meditation is to concentrate on your breathing and posture.After focusing intently on these things, you then expand your concentration to the thoughts. Do not try to repress or encourage these thoughts, just serve the thoughts and then move to the next.You can practice formal mindfulness meditation, which will also include a physical approach (concentrating on posture as well) or an informal approach where you just become mindful to moments of everyday life., simply observing without promoting thoughts in any particular direction (rememeber the wide angle lens approach). Though it sounds simple, mindfulness takes practice, and the longer you practice, the easier the process becomes. A wise man once told me that a great way to test a man's level of consciousness is to have him sit in a room for two months. Huh! I balked. I could do that. I could sit and search the Internet, make a few phone calls, read some books, watch a few good movies. My list went on and on describing a myriad of things I could do in my room alone. No, a man needs to sit in his room alone, with nothing, just by himself.

Well, that was different. If someone asked me to sit in a room by myself for two months, I would probably go crazy. Then, I thought about all the odd stories I heard about Shamans being dropped off on a mountain with no food and very little water for seven days. Then, I thought about all the spiritual leaders who fasted and went on hunger strikes. Yes, these men had a considerable amount of control over their bodies and minds.

Even medicine men in traditional communities had to go through rigorous rituals and even life and death situations to become healers. In modern times, these ceremonies might seem archaic, even barbaric, but necessary. If a shaman survived seven days on a mountain, he was considered a God. If a spiritualist could spend two months meditating in a room, he was considered enlightened. And rightly so, these are people who have battled against nature and won. Which isn't a very easy thing to do. How many of us eat when we're hungry, rest when we're tired, and drink when we're thirsty?

What is most important is that these people have mastered themselves. They have no if any desires for worldly gains or conquests. They've experienced death. Death had knocked on their door several times and they aren't afraid of it. Our ancestors knew what they were doing when they put a healer in charge. They wouldn't let just any guy take the wheel. No, they had a series of conditions, of rituals, and regiments that they had to master in order to become healers.

I think that we should have a national referendum, where we ask all people claiming to be spiritual ! leaders to sit in a cave for two months. We can ask them to fast for seven days. We can ask them to give away all of their possessions to charity. Or we can ask them to do something a little more humble. Maybe going to a developing country, they can pick one in Africa, South East Asia, or the Middle East. And live amongst the Natives. No, they can't go there and stay in a Western style four-star hotel. They need to go and live with Natives, drink out of their cups, sleep in their beds, so they can understand what true suffering and poverty is about.

They can then understand how it feels to be exploited and live a life where there is no hope, or opportunities, or possibilities of change. Then, they can test their skills to try and help people who really need to be helped. By doing this, they can look death, disease, and oppression in the eye and know that they survived. This is the real test of a spiritual leader.

Has Disappearance Object Phenomenon Its Logic?

There are many paranormal phenomena described in books but it is hard to say what to believe. In case things are true but misinterpreted (deformed), this brings another problem. I remember a film about Bigfoot shown on the Zone Reality channel. The narrator in it said that humans do not turn their head and body simultaneously when they want to look sideways. However, the narrator forgot to say that humans in space suits or Sasquatch dresses look sideways as animals do - that is, they turn their bodies too.

If you go to court to bear evidence, the judges and the police always approach you in faith that you are a witness and that as a witness you tell the truth. You also deserve a respect for bringing your evidence. If you do not tell the truth, you are a product of the world's conscience crisis - the case of many media and paranormal books that lie. Certainly, human beings do not usually turn their head and body simultaneously, but important is to say that this only happens when they have a light dress on them.

This article is about Disappearance Object Phenomenon, which I have been experiencing for really a long time and I bear evidence that it exists as something very weird that science cannot explain, as it is prejudiced and it neglects phenomena it cannot measure; on the other hand, these phenomena exist and ignoring them (not only DOP, there are many such weird phenomena - for example, Spontaneous Human Combustion) means going backwards. Contrary to bearing evidence at courts, with DOP you have no respect as a witness and this society will mercilessly knock you down to the ground. Most scientists basically rule such phenomena out of the menu of real possibilities, although every police report of a Spontaneous Human Combustion case leaves clear evidence behind.

You may object that science needs proofs, but I say that it also needs genuine intelligence. I received a few e-mails from someone who claimed that he was "the resurrected Prophet of the Most High, St. John the Bapti! st," so I wrote him and asked to write me again the same but in the Aramaic language. If you do this with people like these, your "scientific proof" is that you will most probably never receive back an e-mail in the Aramaic language, as it is much more difficult to learn it than just to say that "I am the resurrected Prophet". DOP has its place in science with genuine intelligence, although the non-intelligent science does not consider it real.

Over many years, DOP has also been observed in the Bermuda Triangle, in the Japan's Dragon's Triangle, and many witnesses, too, bear evidence of its existence. However, the problem is that DOP is one of the most arcane phenomena to approach and it thus almost always gets bundled up into the following types of explanation: It is caused by 1) people's absentmindedness; 2) somnambulence; 3) temporary mind blackouts; 4) "borrower" type of people around. But if you experience it and suddenly realize, like me, that beyond your DOP is logic, the much weirder apples reveal themselves in the mists of the yet unknown border.

Sagittarius A* is the black hole in the center of our galaxy (Milky Way). When I visited one seer, she told me that she felt the radiance of a black hole emanating from me. This really surprised me. Without prior knowledge, she confirmed other things in my past very well. Thus, from a scientific point of view, DOP can also be caused by miniature black holes fluttering around us that make the things (objects) disappear (and appear). This is one possible explanation (parallel universes) based upon a scientific view. Other explanations may be even weirder. I remember that when my physician gave me pills and they made me feel even sicker, they simply disappeared (as many thousands of other things in the past did and in the similar context). The logic of this is that "someone" did not want me to be harmed, so I understood that my DOP has logic - communication.

Of many of my DOP experiences, one was related to my necklace of Lord Ganesh, which dis! appeared on the day of Lord Ganesha's birthday (September 7, 2005). The probability explanation rather favors DOP (absentmindedness is not DOP), as the year has 365 days and only 1 day of the year is dedicated to the Lord Ganesha's birthday. Had it happened on any other day, I would have believed it was my absentmindedness. When I found the necklace after several days - although I searched for it very meticulously - I already knew that the number of the days between the disappearance and the appearance was a spiritual (cryptographic) message. DOP helped me to understand that the universe is more arcane than it appears.

I started asking questions on a few Hindu websites, but I soon understood that their webmasters did not know anything about DOP. Of many of them only one webmaster replied to me with words "You are blessed by the Mother Divine". I realized that Hinduism is actually very secretive and thus I started reading books about secretive cults and I stumbled upon 64 Yoginis. This was one of the few most secret cults in history and with such a clandestine communication that not even the best scholars today will understand it if they see books such as Sri Matottara Tantra, which is kept in the Nepal National archives. Each chapter of it ends with a reference to its doctrine, which is the Secret of the Yoginis.

In Zen Buddhism, the logic of this world is not the logic of Zen. DOP, if you believe in its existence, may be the carrier of the Dark Matter of Zen and the tongue of the Kali's womb.

Develop a real "Mind-Muscle Connection" for Bodybuilding Success

When I started reading bodybuilding magazines in the late '80s and early '90s, a new buzzword had hit the scene. Every pro bodybuilder was claiming within published articles to have a "mind/muscle connection" during workouts.

I'd be reading an article by Greg Zulak or some other popular writer of the time and there'd be the quote from the Olympia competitor:

"Uh... yeah Greg, whenever I do my sets, I make sure to get that mind-muscle connection."

Or Greg would say it for him: 'Joe O'Competitor says he makes sure to first get a good mind-muscle connection with every set he does.'

This kind of ambiguous crap would drive me crazy. And why shouldn't it? Most young guys pick up bodybuilding magazines with the idea that the pages will contain answers to something that becomes an increasingly puzzling phenomenon: 'how to make every workout count and continuously build muscle mass.' Claiming that some fuzzy cognitive ritual was playing even a remote role in creating those steroid-built bodies was enough to provoke anyone to relegate the magazine's pages to barbeque start-up kindling.

But those printed ambiguities never discouraged me from seeking out a true mind-muscle connection. Most of us have a nagging feeling that our minds are more interconnected with our bodies than we acknowledge enough to exploit for our benefit. This nagging feeling consumed me. It caused me to search. I wanted to know how I could truly use the power of my mind to help build a more powerful and visually appealing body. What did my search produce? It resulted in the following discoveries:

1. A true 'mind/muscle connection' is a deep-seated belief in a muscle's performance abilities during a bodybuilding workout.

2. Muscles can be coaxed to perform better during workouts through subconscious training - resulting in better muscle growth.

3. The subconscious mind can be 'conditioned' to enhance muscle recuperation between workouts - resulting in better muscle growth.

4. A bodybu! ilding w orkout mind/muscle connection can only be of long-term benefit when synergistically combined with optimal workout/recuperation techniques.

Let's start with number one; A Deep-Seated Belief in the Muscle's Workout Performance Abilities

An effective mind/muscle connection isn't the practice of just creating a zombie-like focus on a muscle as you watch it work. That kind of "connection" will be of little benefit. What you really need is a deep-seated (subconscious) belief in that muscle's ability to perform at the critical points in your workouts. It's during pivotal points of threshold-breaking sets and reps that you need to call on empowering beliefs from your subconscious mind. Those beliefs need to be automatically driven, via neuro-transmitters, to the fibers of the working muscles. This is a tall order - yet easily accomplished with the right techniques or equipment.

Muscles can be coaxed to perform better during Workouts through Subconscious Training

Many of us are familiar with a strange phenomenon: We begin using a new bodybuilding supplement that promises us the world. We notice it making a positive difference for a few weeks. Then as suddenly as we experienced the surge in progress - that progress begins to wane before it comes to a screeching halt.

We know this as the "placebo effect". Yet the connection that so few trainees seem to make is the implications this effect has for harnessing the power of the subconscious mind. If 'believing' that a bodybuilding supplement will work can make it so (albeit temporarily), then how much can your muscles grow if they had this subconscious belief indefinitely? Better yet, how can you create this belief indefinitely?

The answer lies within a technique referred to as "anchoring". When you condition your mind to believe in optimal workout performance before going to the gym, you can "anchor" these beliefs to one of your five senses. Then, at critical stages in your workout, you can "fire off" the anchor in order to perform ! like a w orld class athlete in your quest for muscle.

It's beyond the scope of this article to describe 'anchoring'. Just know - it's the ultimate technique for creating a mind-muscle connection.

The Subconscious Mind can be 'conditioned' to enhance muscle recuperation between Workouts

A boost in bodybuilding workout performance will produce little without adequate muscle recuperation between workouts. When improved workout performance is combined with faster recuperation, speedier muscle growth is the natural result.

The mind can definitely be conditioned to embrace and enjoy the habits that lead to faster recuperation. Aside from conditioning the subconscious to enjoy muscle building eating habits, it can also be taught to automatically reduce stress. This reduction of stress is essential to reducing cortisol levels. Since cortisol is a catabolic hormone (meaning it breaks down muscle tissue), keeping it on the low side is a big key to muscle gains.

Stress is not so much what happens in our lives as how we interpret those happenings and internalize them subconsciously. If your subconscious mind is conditioned to make these interpretations in a less stressful manner, you can have a lot going on in your life (with much hanging in the balance) and still sleep well and make terrific bodybuilding gains.

A bodybuilding mind-muscle connection can only be of long-term benefit when synergistically combined with optimal workout/recuperation techniques.

Successful natural bodybuilding results from synergism; it's the reward of mixing an optimal combination of effective "ingredients". If just one of these crucial ingredients is missing or not optimally executed, muscle growth plateaus.

This is what many beginners don't understand. They spend money thinking just one "magic bullet supplement" will give them huge gains. It'd be to their benefit to learn that even steroid users "on cycle" have been known to over-train and plateau. If an anabolic drug can't compensate for ineffect! ive trai ning, imagine how powerless such training renders whey protein... or nitric oxide supplements... or a mind/muscle connection.

However, when a 'mind-muscle connection' (i.e. mind training for bodybuilding workouts) is combined with just the right training techniques - look out; a powerful mixture is formed. This potent amalgamation is the best force I know of for conquering the challenge of augmenting an underdeveloped musculature (aka; a skinny body).

There are ways to very easily incorporate mind training into an optimal workout program. I suggest seeking them out for more muscle growth and less wasted money on supplements. Especially since some of those expensive supplements create little more than a 'temporary mind gain'.

Why shouldn't whatever humans do fall under the same laws of nature as what other animals do? Sure, we're more intelligent (in some ways) than non-human animals, but are we capable of design, while those other creatures aren't?

In "The Atheist's Guide to Reality," Alex Rosenberg says no to the last question. It's an interesting argument, one which strikes at the heart of cherished societal and individual presumptions about how people think, decide, and act.

Darwin made good physics' claim to banish purpose from nature. The process he discovered underlies the appearance of purpose wherever it emerges, even in the human mind. 

Not only are the individual acts of human beings unguided by purpose; so are their thoughts. Combine the purposeless but well-adapted thoughts of a lot of people over a long time, and the result is history. Could history have purpose, meaning, or a direction even when people lack them?

Sure, it could, if there were any purposes. But physics has already ruled them out. Science excludes God's designs, or some purpose operating in the universe to navigate events into some safe harbor hidden in the future.

There is no alternative to blind variation and environmental filtration in human history, so there is no source for meaning or purpose in our history.

What we're left with is nihilism.

Fortunately, Rosenberg says it is nice nihilism. "Nice," because humans (like other animals) naturally are driven to choose life over death, getting out of bed in the morning rather than laying around in a depressed, listless state.

Nice nihilism undermines all values. This also goes for the silly idea of the existentialist philosophers, who realized that science rules out meanings or purpose and so insisted that we each had to create them for ourselves.

...Existentialism didn't see the fatuousness of trying to create something that nature had ruled out as impossible. Creating purpose in a world that can't have any is like trying to build a perpetual motion machine after you have discovered that nature has ruled them out.

...Luckily for us, Mother Nature has seen to it that most of us, incuding the secular humanists, will get up most mornings and go on living even without anything to make our lives meaningful. The proof is obvious. There is nothing that makes our lives meaningful, and yet here we are, out of our pajamas.

The notion that we need something to make life meaningful in order to keep living is another one of those illusions fostered by introspection.

Excellent. I'm going to search for my Nihilism wristband that I got six years ago, along with Apathy and Despair. After all, there is joy in nihilism.

The second type of chair massage is the professional one, in which the customer makes an appointment or, in most cases, the masseuse comes to the customer and gives the massage. The customer sits in a specially designed chair, where their back is facing the masseuse and their face and stomach lean into the chair. The massage is given over the customer's clothes and can last anywhere from 20 to 50 minutes. This massage focuses on the head, hands, neck, arms, back and shoulders. Eventually, its job is to work out the tension within the body that has accumulated due to stress on the job. It has the same benefits as a professionally given massage, to relax the muscles, ease headaches, and help regulate the blood circulation within the affected muscles and tissues.

In order for the customer to decide which chair mas! sage is the best one for them, they need to estimate the cost of both methods and determine how often they will be used. This will help determine how the family budget and schedule will be affected. The massage chairs begin around 650 dollars and go up from there. The professional massages cost 85 dollars an hour. Also, one needs to consider time confines as a chair never needs an appointment but a person does.

According to many, the history of martial arts is as old as human existence and civilization itself. Research into martial arts history shows that martial arts has its presence in Mesopotamia, otherwise referred to as the cradle of civilization.

History Of Martial ArtsAccording to the Chinese however, the credit for the development of this art is attributed to Bodhidharma (an Indian name) who left India in search of enlightenment and reached a monastery in China around 520 A.D. The monastery situated in the Songshan mountains is the modern day's Shaolin Temple. Bodhidharma, who was known by his Chinese name Ta-Mo introduced Zen Buddhism to the Chinese. He aimed to help the Chinese monks to retain their physical strength and health and taught them physical exer! cises wh ich were essentially martial arts.

As is evident, martial arts became an essential component for the maintenance of physical health, philosophy and also religion. as the art grew in China, which soon came to be known as the home of martial arts, gradually spread to other Asian countries like Japan, Korea and Philippines. In modern times, all these countries have their own individual traditions of martial arts, though heavily influenced by Chinese principles.

No matter their origin, the essential objective of learning and practicing martial arts is to defeat an opponent physically or for self defense from any physical threat. Additionally many martial arts and closely linked to various religious and philosophical beliefs of Hinduism, Buddhism, Daoism or Shinto, Confucianism, and even Islam (by Chinese Muslims).

Hafiz warns, watch out for spiritual la-la land

Hafiz is pretty cool, for a religious'y guy. He's a Persian mystic poet who did his thing in the 14th century. 

Daniel Ladinsky has written a book, "A Year With Hafiz," that contains 365 poems that are versions of Hafiz, in much the same sense that Coleman Barks has popularized Rumi. Meaning, liberties are taken. These aren't word for word translations.

Fine with me. I'd rather get the spirit of a poet, than the letter of what he or she said. 

Here's the January 17 poem, "Watch Out for Spiritual La-La Land."

Watch out for spiritual la-la land, where you might wind up comatose.

Some early warning signs are:

A. You start wearing all orange or white and count your beads in public.

B. You chant something mysterious in Sanskrit or some language from another planet while burning incense that (unknown to you) is laced with potent hash, that makes you think you are on the right trck when naked devas start appearing.

C. You start believing some basically regular guy or gal with drowsy eyes -- who parrots wisdom -- is a saint.

D. Even with those imaginary devas running around (who you would have thought might have stimulated your lower chakras), your wife or husband or lovers start to think: Gosh, what happened to my sweetheart? We used to do it in the car, in traffic jams, behind our tinted windows to pass the time constructively, and now look ,yes, now just look...my sweetheart hasn't gone down on me in three months, and may never again.

E. Your high school graduating class pitches in for the best cult deprogrammer in the world for you, as a birthday present. Especially if you were a runner-up, or ever even remotely considered most likely to succeed

Ooh, that last one hurt. I indeed was the male deemed "most likely to succeed" by my Woodlake Union High School class of 1966.

Probably should have, since I joined up with a crazed Christian-Hindu-Whatever yoga teacher in 1969 and had some pretty darn strange experiences with him. Yeah, I was off in spiritual la-la land. Stayed in that realm for many years.

If '250 Calorie' Label Doesn't Stop You, '50 Minute Jog' Label Might

Displaying the amount of time you'd need to jog in order to burn off the calories from a sugary drink, rather than showing a calorie count, may be more effective in dissuading you from consuming those beverages, new research suggests.

Researchers observed teenagers at stores in West Baltimore, where signs displayed either calorie counts, calorie counts as a percent of recommended daily calorie intake, or the time spent jogging that would be needed to burn off those calories. While all led teenagers to purchase fewer sugary beverages, the conversion to exercise minutes was the most effective.

"In general, people are very bad at estimating the amount of calories in food they consume," said study researcher Sara Bleich, an assistant professor of health policy and management at Johns Hopkins's Bloomberg School of Public Health. "If we give them easy ways of examining it…I think we can be effective in reducing calories in purchases."

After introducing the signs to neighborhood stores near schools, researchers observed teenagers and monitored how their beverage-purchasing habits changed compared with the period before the signs went up.

About 93 drinks a day were purchased in each store, on average, and this number declined slightly when the signs went up. Soda sales, which made up almost half of all purchases, dipped slightly, as did those of iced tea and sports drinks. However, sales of non-sugary beverages increased, especially sales of water, which went from 5 to 10 drinks sold daily, on average.

While all three types of signs seemed to reduce the number of sugary drinks that were bought, only the signs displaying exercise times had results strong enough to mean researchers knew the decrease in purchases could not be due to simple chance.

250 calories, or a 40-minute jog?

Researchers calculated the exercise times based on a 110-pound teenager, and jogging was chosen because many people don't like to do it, Bleich said. Exercise times, she noted, would vary depending on a person's weight. For example, a 110-pound person would need to jog for 50 minutes to burn off a 20-ounce bottle of soda, whereas a 150-pound person would need to jog for 40 minutes.

Some stores chose not to participate; their reasons included a language barrier and a fear of losing sales. Bleich said the sales issue may be an obstacle going forward, but the study offered some reassurance, as students bought more water when the calorie signs went up.

Bleich said they chose to study black teenagers because they are one of the groups with the highest levels of obesity, and tend to have lower levels of health information. A wider study is planned that includes Hispanic teenagers as well, she said.

Calorie counts soon to appear on more menus

If the results hold, the study may have a wider-reaching impact.

"It was a very interesting study, and I think most Americans would be floored to learn it takes 50 minutes to burn off one 20-ounce bottle of soda, basically a nutritionally worthless beverage," said Julie Greenstein, deputy director of health promotion policy at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a health and nutrition advocacy group.

"I think there'd have to be some further studies on that to see if there would be an impact," Greenstein said. "If it does have an impact, the federal government should consider this on a broader scale.

"Sometimes other messages are more beneficial to reducing consumption. I think it makes sense to focus on sugary drinks, since they are the largest single source of calories."

Bleich said that was one reason the study focused on beverages. With a mandate for calorie counts in larger restaurant chains coming next year, she said it is important to find a way to convey that information in a way the consumer understands.

While the current study was in black teenagers, Bleich said this means of conveying the information may work even better in other demographics.

"My sense would be if you did this sort of study in a group of people for whom nutrition or fitness might be more important, you might have a bigger effect," she said. "If you're more interested in changing your behavior, you're more likely to pay attention to this sort of information."

The study appears in the Dec. 15 edition of the American Journal of Public Health.
