Our preference for salty foods may be determined by the foods we eat as infants, a new study suggests.

Infants in the study whose mothers fed them salty food when they were 6-months old were more likely to prefer the taste of salt than infants who were not fed salty foods, the researchers said.

This penchant for salt appeared to last into early childhood.

The findings suggest early exposure to salt may make a child more likely to prefer, and consequently consume, high-salt foods throughout their lives, according to the researchers.

But the study showed only a correlation, and not a direct cause-effect link, the researchers noted, and more work is needed to determine whether infants who are exposed to salt do in fact go on to eat more salt as adults, and whether they develop health problems associated with salt consumption, such as high blood pressure.

A salty diet

The researchers tested the preference for salt in 61 infants when they were 2-months and 6-months old. The babies were given a bottle containing salty water, and the researchers measured how much they drank in one minute.

Mothers of the infants also reported whether they had fed their babies starchy foods. While the researchers did not ask what types of foods the babies were given, starchy foods commonly fed to babies (such as Cheerios, mashed potatoes and waffles) contribute substantially to the amount of salt in their diets.

None of the infants liked the salt water when they were 2-months old. But at six months, the infants who had been exposed to starchy foods consumed 55 percent more salt than those who hadn't eaten starchy foods.

The researchers continued to track 26 of the infants until they were preschool age. Children who had been exposed to starchy foods as infants were more likely to lick salt from the surface of food when they were preschoolers compared with children who didn't eat starchy foods as infants.

However, children exposed to starchy food as infants did not actually prefer salty foods, such as pizza and French fries, more than children who were not exposed to starchy foods as infants, the researchers said.

Tasting salt

More work is needed to determine exactly how humans develop a liking for salt. Babies are born with a taste for sweet foods, and their taste for salt develops later, the researchers said. It's not clear whether this occurs as the biological mechanisms that detect salt develop, or whether infants simply grow to accept the taste of salt.

The study was published online Dec. 20 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Pass it on: Feeding babies salty foods may boost their preference for salt later in life.

Burma Holidays: Discover the Buddhist Legacy

Posted: 21 Dec 2011 12:09 PM PST

Article by Jude Limburn Turner

Anyone embarking on Burma holidays is sure to encounter the country's Buddhist religion before too long. Of all the Buddhist countries, Burma has the highest proportion of monks in its population and sights of crimson-robed monks and golden pagodas are frequent. Indeed, most visitors will already have seen them in many photos and travel commercials, but how much does the average visitor know about Buddhism as it is practised locally? Knowing something about the way that religion interacts with ordinary life can enhance your appreciation and understanding of a place immeasurably, so read on for an introduction to Burmese Buddhism.

Background

It is unknown exactly when Buddhism first came to the country, but it may have been brought by one of the Indian emperor Ashoka the Great's monks, named Sohn Uttar Sthavira, who led a group of monks to Burma, bringing sacred texts. The Buddhism of that era had some marked differences from the religion practiced today, however, being a Tantric form known as Ari Buddhism. It combined Buddhist ideas with local spirit worship and elements of Hinduism. It was early in the 11th century that Theravada Buddhism was introduced, with the conversion of King Anawrahta, ruler of Bagan. It has remained the main religion of the country ever since - although some tribes were converted to Christianity under British colonialism. Theravada is the strand of Buddhism practised in Sri Lanka and much of Southeast Asia, so travellers who have visited those places before starting their Burma holidays may recognise many of its features - however, Burmese Theravada has some unique elements of its own.

Buddhism Today

Most of the Buddhists that you are likely to meet on your Burma Holidays are Theravadans. Theravada Buddhism draws its teachings from the Pali scriptures, the Tripitaka. It promotes the idea that understanding comes through personal experience and critical reasoning, and that enlightenment is reached through individual efforts at recognising the 'fett! ers' of worldly attachments that bind people to the cycle of rebirth and death. Also important is merit-making, whereby merit is accumulated by good deeds and thoughts, and is carried into the next life, bringing a person closer to enlightenment. This is why you'll see monks making rounds in the morning, so that lay people can present them with alms and gain merit. Merit is also gained through meditation and maintaining Buddhist precepts.

Buddhism and Nat Worship

Theravada Buddhism was introduced to a country already rich in spiritual paths and practices, including Ari Buddhism and a number of animist and mystical traditions including Nat worship. Nats include the Great Nats, ordinary men and women who ascended to god-like status after death, and local spirits of the land. Because Buddhist cosmology does not exclude such beliefs, you will often see evidence of the two practices existing side-by-side on your Burma holidays. For example, you'll see shrines and monuments to Nats at most Buddhist temples, and many festivals will contain Buddhist and animist elements. For many, it's still important to honour the gods and spirits of the land while they follow the path of Buddhism.

7 Macrobiotic Ways To Fight the Winter Blues.

Posted: 21 Dec 2011 11:02 AM PST

Article by Elsie Boat

We all get the occasional aches and pains that come with the stresses of modern life; these however become prevalent in the winter. Winter does not just bring gloomy weather; it also brings with it shorter days and lower temperatures as well as the gift of colds, sore throats and other ailments. However this winter should be different if you are willing to turn to a macrobiotic lifestyle; a macrobiotic diet will have you fit as a fiddle throughout this period without so much as a sniffle.

What is a Macrobiotic Diet?

The macrobiotic diet has caught fame in recent years thanks to its two famous advocates; Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna. The macrobiotic diet is not just about wanting to lose a few pounds; it is a way of life. Originating from Japan, it combines principles of Zen Buddhism with a Western-style vegetarian diet. Macrobiotic diet was introduced by a Japanese educator named George Ohsawa but was made more feasible and popular by Michio Kushi who together with his wife opened the Kushi Institute in 1978 and published several books. The macrobiotic diet regimen supports an Eastern philosophy of balancing foods to attain a balance of yin and yang. Yin foods are cold, sweet, and passive while yang foods are hot, salty, and aggressive. The macrobiotic diet is also based on the premise that cooking foods destroys its nutrition so we should eat foods in their most natural form without damaging the nutritional value.

What foods are allowed in a Macrobiotic diet?

A macrobiotic diet is easy to follow once you know exactly what you are allowed to eat; the diet divides daily intake into different food groups which are:

*50% whole grains

*25% seasonal vegetables, cooked or raw

*10% protein foods - such as fish or legumes

*5% sea vegetables

*5% soups

*5% fruit, nuts, or seeds

Benefits of a Macrobiotic diet.

A Macrobiotic diet has several health benefits; the obvious one being weight loss. Also because the macrobiotic diet focuses on f! oods low in saturated fats and high in fiber, it helps lower the risk of heart disease, high cholesterol, heart attack and stroke. Whilst fighting potentially big illness; below are macrobiotic meals that can resolve winter ailments such as headaches, colds, sore throats, stiff backs, bloating and general feelings of weakness.

(1) To relieve headache at the front of the head take

*Miso soup with wakame and leafy greens; this soup is rich in minerals with 'up' energy from the greens.

*Bancha tea with umeboshi and spring onions; the tea and plums reduce acidity and the spring onions move energy up.

(2) Headache at back of the head and stiff neck

This ailment can be relieved with a macrobiotic recipe of

*Hot apple juice: the heat is relaxing and the energy of the apple is up and out.

*Steamed greens with sauerkraut; the sauerkraut helps reduce stickiness and thins your blood whites, whilst the greens move energy up.

(3)Colds

Though we are susceptible to Colds all year round, it's more common in the winter. Cold symptoms such as coughing, sore throats, sneezing among others make the season unbearable for most of us; a macrobiotic diet will relieve all cold symptoms.

*Bancha tea with shoyu and spring onions; the tea is slightly alkaline, the shoyu adds minerals and enzymes whilst the spring onions move energy up.

*Hot ginger and lemon tea; the ginger rises and cuts through the mucus while the ginger moves the energy out.

*Miso soup with leafy greens; the greens move the healthy energy of the soup up.

(4) Sore throat:

*Fresh ginger, celery and carrot soup; the ginger moves the energy out, the celery moves energy up and the carrot takes energy down and away from the throat.

*Hot lemon and rice syrup or honey; the lemon creates a local condition in the throat that subdues the growth of bacteria and the syrup soothes the throat.

(5)Congestion in the lunges:

*Steamed greens and ginger; the steamed greens move energy up! and the ginger moves the energy down.

*Parsley tea; the parsley moves energy up and out.

(6)To relieve bloating:

*Root vegetable soups and stews; the roots and cooking styles moves energy down to relieve poor circulation.

*Miso soup with fried onion and ginger; this will strongly move energy out to the periphery of your body.

*Fried garlic rice; the rice provides strong energy and garlic helps move it out.

(7) Feelings of weakness:

*Pressure cooked whole grains; this moves the slow burning energy of the grains deep inside.

*Vegetable stew or casserole with round vegetables; this opens up the energy deep inside.

Advocates of the macrobiotic lifestyle believe by following a macrobiotic diet, one can prevent health problems and rejuvenate the body. If you're drawn to the concept of eating a natural, organic, plant-based diet (with a little fish) and embrace a Zen-like spirituality in both your life and food selections, then a macrobiotic diet may be for you in the long term. It however can be used on a short term basis to fight of those little niggling aches and pains we get in the winter season.

Techniques to see Magnificence in Imperfection

Posted: 21 Dec 2011 10:13 AM PST

Article by timothy roger

In one way or an additional, we're all imperfect. Moreover, we get it as fact that we live in an imperfect earth. And nevertheless most of us shell out our lives in checking, and indeed longing for most suitable things. A shiny new car or truck, an ideal home with a perfect garden inside of an excellent neighborhood, a perfect spouse - the search hardly ever ends.

There exists almost nothing mistaken with shiny, fabulous and otherwise wonderful elements, other than that the majority of people trust they under no circumstances have ample of them. The problem is always that "perfect things" quite often are typically unnatural, and number of and far in in between. We will devote nearly all of our lives taking a look at ugliness, if we set perfection as our standard for appreciating magnificence.

Envision the amount happier many of us might be if somehow- as if by magic- our lives were immediately stuffed with elegance. As not likely since it seems, that is exactly what can occur if we adjust our point of view only a bit, and seek to appreciate the elegance in issues imperfect.

Japanese simply call this idea "wabi-sabi" - representing an in depth earth see on aesthetics. Wabi-sabi is woven into your fabric of the Japanese living way of life, and most Japanese believe it can be almost extremely hard for westerners to enjoy it absolutely. Wabi-sabi could be the most conspicuous and attribute element of what we visualize as old fashioned Japanese arts, and occupies roughly precisely the same placement as traditional Greek ideals of magnificence and perfection have inside the West.

At the core of wabi-sabi is a relevance of heading outside of typical ways of trying and pondering about existence. On this entire world see, all important things are impermanent, all issues are imperfect, all points are incomplete. To enjoy existence, is to appreciate it for what it really is - impermanent, imperfect and hardly ever comprehensive.

The notion of wabi-sabi correlates together with ! the teac hings of zen Buddhism. The first practitioners had been tea ceremony masters, priests and monks. Zen teaches the importance of likely past traditional procedures of wanting and considering about existence, by emphasizing intuitive, non-judgmental insight into your substance planet - over and above our artificial notions of intellectualism.

As far as content details are concerned, elements which represent wabi-sabi possess a suggestion of a normal plan, are irregular in shape and also have an intimate sense. Also, these are unpretentious, earthy and simple in kind.

We don't have to go to an artwork gallery or a museum to view spectacular stuff. Acquire an appear all-around you. In case your surroundings are anything like mine, I'm convinced you'll find plenty of humble imperfections in them. Attempt to value what is there - because they are. Your reward could be a lifetime surrounded by attractiveness, any time, any wherever.

See the person behind the eyes

Posted: 21 Dec 2011 10:02 AM PST

Most of us wear a kind of mask, a persona that hides our deepest thoughts and feelings, and presents a polished, controlled face to the world.

To be sure, a persona is a good thing to have. For example, meetings at work, holidays with the in-laws, or a first date are usually not the best time to spill your guts. Just because you're selective about what you reveal to the world does not mean you're insincere; phoniness is only when we lie about what's really going on inside.

Much of the time, we interact mask-to-mask with other people. There's a place for that. But remember times when someone saw through your mask to the real you, the person back behind your eyes. If you're like me, those times were both unnerving and wonderful.

Even though it's scary, everyone longs to be seen, to be known. To have your hopes and fears acknowledged – the ones behind a polite smile or a frown of frustration. To have your true caring seen, as well as your positive intentions and natural goodness. Most intimately of all, to feel that your innermost being – the one to whom things happen, the one strapped to this roller-coaster of a life trying to make sense of it before it ends – has been recognized by someone.

This goes both ways: others long to be seen by you. Besides the ways that seeing the person behind the eyes benefits others, it's good for you, too. Being seen is often the real stake on the table, the top priority, more important to other people than whether you agree with them about something. When someone gets that sense from you, that he or she exists for you as a person- not just as a pain in the neck or as someone to manage to get through this meeting, dinner, bedtime routine, phone call, or sexual experience – then it's much easier to take care of the matter at hand, whatever it is.

Sensing the deepest layers in people can nourish you in other ways, too. For example, I had a relative with a big heart but a difficult personality that drove me a little crazy. Finally, I started to imagine that being with her was like looking at a bonfire through a lattice covered with thorny vines. I focused on the love shining through and warming my own heart, and didn't get caught up in the vines. That helped both of us a lot.

How do we learn to see the person behind the mask?

This week with different people, get a sense of the person behind the eyes. It's not a staring contest; it can actually help to look away so you're not distracted by surface details. (While I'm using the word "see," of course you are also hearing the person behind the words, sensing the person embedded in the body sitting across from you.)

Take a moment to relax and set aside your case about the other person, and open to the being down in there somewhere, maybe rattled and defensive and acting in ways that are problematic, but really just yearning for happiness and some way to move forward in life.

You could also sense your own innermost being, and then imagine that core, that sense of being alive, the recipient of experiences, the one for whom life is hard sometimes, inside the other person.

Let that recognition of the person over there show in your face, in your own eyes. Be brave and let them see you seeing them.

Notice how this recognition changes the course of an interaction – perhaps softening it, making it more authentic, leading to a good resolution more gently and quickly.

As an advanced practice, you could even raise the subject with someone, of the degree to which you feel seen (or not) as persons by each other. That kind of conversation can transform a relationship.

Last, enjoy being a person yourself, the channel through which your life streams – with some of the richest streaming being the other persons all around you.

6 Ways to Start Your Day Off on a High Note

Posted: 21 Dec 2011 09:03 AM PST

I'm an early riser and I have been most of my life. It's a habit my parents instilled in me ever since I was a kid, and nowadays I actually look forward to the morning. But for the first part of my life, my mornings used to be a bit chaotic.

I recall the daily scrambling to eat breakfast, get my things together, and get out the door. As a result, my life was a reflection of this chaos. I think the way you start your day can have a big impact on how the rest of it turns out so I today I want to share six basic ways that you can start your day off on a high note.
  1. Write
As a blogger, I've found that I'm most prolific and creative early in the morning. But even if you're not a blogger, writing is a very therapeutic thing to do. We tend to have quite a bit on our minds when we wake up because we've been dreaming all night. Putting it all down on paper allows you to clear the mind for a much more productive day ahead. I always come back to what Tony Robbins said about journaling - "A life worth living is a life worth recording."

  2. Read
On the days that I can't seem to put two words together, I go to my next alternative which is to read. I recommend you don't read the news or anything serious right when you wake up. Most of what's on the news is negative. You could spend time reading through the archives here at Dumb Little Man or find books that are uplifting. Whatever you read, make sure it's somewhat light-hearted or thought provoking. Even if you read for 15 minutes each morning you'll be amazed at how much that adds up over time. Eventually it will be something you look forward to.

  3. Listen to Music
I tend to combine reading and writing with listening to music, but you could just listen to music. I have a morning playlist setup on Spotify that is very soothing. I tend to stay away from anything that is really loud or full of negative lyrics. I think you can more or less listen to anything as long as you find that it calms your nerves.

  4. Motivational Tapes
This is something I've actually learned from listening to Zig Ziglar. He said that one of the best ways to speed up the flow of serotonin first thing in the morning is to listen to a motivational tape. Having done this more than a handful of times, I can definitely say there's value in doing this. You start your day off with a bit of inspiration and hope and that mindset permeates the rest of your day.

  5. Exercise
If there's one thing that trumps all of the above for me, it's a morning surf session. With nothing but waves, a sunrise, and dolphins leaping in the air, this really enables me to start the day off on a high note. All it takes is one good wave. But if you don't live near an ocean, any form of exercise will do. Go for a walk around your neighborhood even if it's a short one. Do a search online and you'll find a number of exercise options that you could do in the comfort of your own home. While I think being outdoors is idea, if you live somewhere where it's freezing cold it might not be that easy to get outside.

  6. Sit Quietly
This might seem like a strange way to start a productive day. A few years ago when I was diagnosed with IBS the doctor told me to spend 15 minutes in the mornings just relaxing and doing absolutely nothing. This is actually easier said than done because we! re so used to being in motion. But I think you'll find that slowing down just a little will actually result in a much better day.
The way you start your day can have a big impact on how the rest of it turns out. So pick any one of these ideas and try it for 30 days. I think you'll be amazed at the dramatic difference it will make in your life.

Does Vitamin C Really Help Colds?

Posted: 21 Dec 2011 08:00 AM PST

Vitamin C
CREDIT: Vitamin C photo via Shutterstock

Each week, MyHealthNewsDaily asks the experts to answer questions about your health. This week, we asked nutrition and infectious disease experts: Does vitamin C help prevent or treat colds?

Joy Dubost, registered dietician and spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association

The science shows that overall, regular ingestion of vitamin C had no effect on the common cold, as far as in the incidence (or how common colds are). Now, most of these studies looked at people who took more than 2,000 mg of vitamin C, which is a very large dose.

The recommended dietary allowance, or RDA, is 75 mg for most adults, and 2,000 mg is the upper limit — you don't want to go over that because you'll have gastrointestinal distress.

[Vitamin C] does support a healthy immune system. So if you're not getting enough vitamin C, you will be more susceptible to colds. If you are taking vitamin C while you have a cold, it could prevent complications such as pneumonia by boosting your immune system.

****

Dr. Mark Levine, chief of molecular and clinical nutrition in National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases

For the average person, vitamin C supplements for colds don't do much of anything, and I don't recommend them. After I say that I like to explain why: There are a lot of trials on vitamin C and colds, of variable quality and people analyze these, so there are analyses of analyses.

You can take vitamin C to prevent colds, or you can take vitamin C once you have a cold to treat it. The treatment trials show a modest benefit. But the reality is in terms of that effect, I don't think it has clinical meaning. In the prophylaxis trials — and prophylaxis means to prevent — the prophylaxis trials [show] in the average person, [Vitamin C doesn't] prevent colds.

Our bodies are configured to keep vitamin C levels within a particular range… As you take in more vitamin C, the amount you absorb from each dose goes down. Then once it is absorbed and goes in the blood, there are proteins on the cell that bring vitamin C into the tissue, and those proteins can't work any faster. Then the excess vitamin C is excreted through the kidneys.

Overall, I say eat more fruits and vegetables.

****

Dr. William Schaffner, chairman of the department of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tenn.

In terms of vitamin C for colds, we need to separate prevention from treatment. On the prevention side the studies are clearly divided. There are some studies that show that taking Vitamin C – usually in fairly large doses – provides some protection against the common cold. But there other studies that show no effect. There are studies of different sizes and quality on both sides of the conclusions. So we (as doctors) have not voted on that one yet.

But, I would say this: that the people who usually advocate taking vitamin C usually advocate taking it in fairly large doses. If you take vitamin C in fairly large doses you're going to excrete a lot of it out in your urine. And if you're dehydrated, that vitamin C is going to form little crystals, which can be painful. So make sure you're drinking lots of water if you are taking vitamin C.

In terms of treatment – there's no evidence that it shortens the course or reduces the symptoms. In other words, there's no evidence that it makes your cold feel better.

***

Dr. Aaron E. Glatt, spokesman for the Infectious Diseases Society of America and professor of clinical medicine, NY Medical College in Rockville Centre, NY

The general answer is probably not a lot. Vitamin C has a checkered history in terms of some studies showing mild benefits, while other studies do not show benefits for upper respiratory viral infections like the common cold. On the whole, I don't think that vitamin C is something people should be jumping to take beyond the regular dietary recommendations.

When you deal with any supplement and you are taking very large doses, it can potentially be problematic. There have been reports of complications and side effects from high doses of supplements, and studies have never demonstrated that super-pharmacological doses are helpful for any disease. In essence, by taking such large doses you are just potentially taking health risks and having an unnecessary expense.

I just tell people to have a normal diet, and drink a glass of orange juice or two if you like. I do not recommend taking high doses of any supplements.

***

Shelley McGuire, national spokesperson for the American Society for Nutrition and an associate professor of nutrition at Washington State University

What we know is that people who eat a lot of naturally occurring vitamin C in foods, do have a lower risk for the common cold. However when scientists isolate just vitamin C and do studies, they're very rarely able to show vitamin C reduces the incidence (how often someone catches a cold) or the severity of a cold.

There is some evidence that people who are in stressful situations — and by that I mean people who are marathon runners, soldiers or people training in the arctic — may benefit from some sort of vitamin C supplementation in terms of incidence of their colds. That may be because their vitamin C requirements may be higher.

So it's kind of a mixed bag. The problem with science sometimes is that we try to reduce these foods down to a specific nutrient and it's probably way more complex than that. Nutrients don't work in isolation, they don't, they work with other nutrients.

Stressed Out? Are You Listening?

Posted: 21 Dec 2011 07:00 AM PST

Article by Randy Luxinger

"Take a deep breath as you step up to the line." That piece of advice first entered my mind when I was a young boy in grade school basketball and it has helped me make many free-throws over the years. It is one form of relaxation that I still use to this day.

There are many relaxation methods that you can implement to help you get rid of stress, or at least reduce it significantly. The key to these relaxation techniques is that they should not be difficult to implement. A few good relaxation techniques can save your life, because you see my friend, stress is more than just unpleasant: Stress can become a major health issue if not dealt with properly.

Ideally, if only you could just remove those factors that cause you to feel stressed, you would be fine, right?

Reality paints a different picture.

Relaxing your body will go a long way to improving your physical condition. However, the most effective techniques should combine the relaxation of your body and your mind. Your body and mind are very closely related and so there are a number of methods you can adopt that will not only improve your physical well being but also act as excellent mind relaxation techniques as well. This article focuses on two of the most basic and easiest techniques to put into use, breathing and exercise as a means of relaxation and stress reduction, plus the resources to further explore these methods.

===> Breathing

Breathing is one of the most important methods for controlling stress and it is also one of the easiest methods to utilize when it comes to relaxing. After all, it is a natural part of living and your body depends on a steady supply of oxygen. Without sufficient levels of oxygen, your body cannot function to its fullest capacity, much like an automobile engine that is starving for fuel.

There is a vast array of resources available regarding specific breathing techniques that go well beyond the scope of this article. Many books and audio books cover this topic exte! nsively.

===> Exercise

Obviously exercise and breathing go hand-in-hand. You can use breathing techniques without specifically performing any physical exercises. On the other hand, you must utilize breathing efficiency methods while performing any physical exercise. That is why I personally prefer the latter method.

I am sure you have heard of the term "runner's high". Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to be healthy and benefit from that experience following my exercise routines. I no longer run to the extent I used to. While I miss hitting the open road, the repeated pounding has taken its toll on this middle-aged body. I now seek the same results in other forms of exercise, such as cycling, weight training and a program called the "Sprint 8" workout by Phil Campbell.

Once again, there are a number of resources on a wide variety different exercise methods available to you. These relaxation techniques are just two of the ways you can achieve stress reduction in your life.

===> The Problem:

How do you find time to learn these relaxation techniques while dealing with your daily routine? Oh no, more stress!

The most common way to learn these methods is by reading books. Sadly, because of the great demand on your time in this 'drive-up-window' society you live in, reading a book often gets omitted or pushed aside because of your busy schedule. You are busier than ever and time has become a dwindling commodity.

Sound familiar?

Thankfully, with the advent and popularity of audio books, you can now get the right information into your mind without having to try and find the time to read during a busy day.

===> Save Time

Now, you can 'listen' to books, seminars, lectures and podcasts while you're on-the-go, and when you don't have time to read. And since today's selection of downloadable audio books is not limited to just fiction and literary works, but runs the gamut from how-to manuals to business books and self-help information, you! will fi nd that you can download an unlimited amount of information into your brain.

Not only can you fill your mind with stress reduction and relaxation techniques, but you can also learn a skill, enjoy a murder mystery or an epic romance novel, and even increase your cultural literacy.

You can enjoy the benefits of audio books while exercising, commuting to and from your work, spending time on your hobby, walking your dog, etc. At the end of that stressful day try relaxing with your favorite audio book, even with the lights off.

When you find your time is limited, 'listen' to what the book has to say.

Hop off the 'stress escalator' by learning stress reduction, exercise methods and relaxation techniques with a good audio book.

The lost children of the Buddha

Posted: 21 Dec 2011 06:00 AM PST

Okay, time for a brain break.  I just came across this nice documentry film, Buddha's Lost Children (2006) by Dutch director Mark Verkerk.  I really enjoyed this film.  This is a blub from the offical site.

In the borderlands of Thailand's Golden Triangle, a rugged region known for its drug smuggling and impoverished hill tribes, one man devotes himself to the welfare of the region's children. A former Thai boxer, turned Meditation monk, Phra Khru Bah Neua Chai Kositto travels widely on horseback, fearlessly dispensing prayers and tough-love. With his Golden Horse Temple he's built an orphanage, school and clinic - a haven for the children of the region, who see him as a shaman, father figure and coach.

Let me say that Phra (monk) had an extraordinary spiritual experience that seemed to empower him and guide him on this special path.

The moment I became a monk, my heart and mind changed...I felt a great calm that I just couldn't explain...I ended up sitting on a rock for 15 days and 15 nights.

I felt such a peace...and then a swarm of bees...built a nest around me and I couldn't move.

It was like a dream in which...the forest was filled with wise men...who taught me their Meditation ways...When I finally awoke after the 15 days...the sun was bright and the bees were gone.

As the benefits of yoga are becoming more clear to people, more people are starting to practice yoga in their homes or local gym classes. This fantastic exercise system has been around for almost 5000 years. There have been thousands of hours dedicated to studying yoga and finding out if it is worth practicing. Simply put, yoga is one of the best exercise systems in the world. It is for this reason that it is popular. If you would like to learn more about the physical benefits of yoga and whether or not it is for you - read on.

1. Flexibility: Regardless of what physical condition you are in, you will be able to practice yoga. Yoga does not rely on you having fantastic flexibility. It helps your work and strengthen your own bodies flexibility. Yoga teaches you how to safely stretch you muscles. When you safely stretch your muscles, you can get rid of the lactic acid that normally builds up with your muscles. This lactic acid usually causes tension, fatigure, pain and stiffness. With yoga this lactic acid is cleared and makes you feel much better physically after exercising. yoga also helps your body lubricate the joints and helps the motion of the joints. In the end, you will see you are more fluid and powerful throughout your entire body.

2. Strength: While yoga is not the ultimate strength building exercise, it does help you build your muscles depending on what exercises you are performing. The Power styles of yoga such as Ashtanga help increase your physical strength and muscle tone at a much quicker rate. The other styles of yoga also help with strength building but only specific exercises.

3. Posture: One of the greatest benefits of yoga is that it helps you work on your posture. This is fantastic for people who have been struggling with posture their entire lives. The yoga positions used help you increase your strength and flexibility. This flexibility and strength is needed to be the foundation of a good posture. The standing and ! sitting positions for yoga automatically help you work on your core strength. Since you rely on those deep abdominal muscles to maintain each pose, you will be building this core strength automatically. Since yoga helps you work on your body awareness, after a few weeks of practicing yoga, you will automatically know when you are slumping or slouching and you will WANT to fix it.

4. Heart: Yoga has an extremely beneficial effect on heart disease. Since yoga is known to lower blood pressure and slow down the heart rate, it is constantly recommended to people with heart problems. Reducing the heart rate can help benefit people who suffer from strokes, hypertension and heart disease. More and more western physicians are recommending yoga to people with heart issues.

This only touches on the physical benefits of yoga. There are many more benefits of yoga that you can also take advantage of. You can gain the benefits of yoga in your own home through a yoga DVD or through a class at a local gym. Decide which one is for you and start practicing yoga.

Options to check out Attractiveness in Imperfection

Article by Scotty Lane

In a single way or a second, we're all imperfect. On top of that, we acquire it as actuality that we stay in an imperfect planet. And however the majority of us spend our lives in browsing, and without a doubt longing for best elements. A shiny new automobile, a perfect dwelling which has a wonderful garden in a very ultimate neighborhood, an ideal partner - the research by no means ends.

There's absolutely nothing incorrect with shiny, attractive and or else ideal issues, besides that most of the people imagine they never have sufficient of them. The situation is that "perfect things" generally are usually unnatural, and few and far in concerning. We are going to pay out a lot of our lives thinking about ugliness, if we set perfection as our conventional for appreciating attractiveness.

Just imagine just how much happier most of us can be if somehow- as if by magic- our lives ended up promptly filled up with splendor. As unlikely because it sounds, this is just what can come about if we alter our level of watch just a bit, and make an effort to value the magnificence in important things imperfect.

Japanese phone this principle "wabi-sabi" - representing a complete planet watch on aesthetics. Wabi-sabi is woven to the cloth on the Japanese residing culture, and most Japanese believe that it's always just about not possible for westerners to appreciate it completely. Wabi-sabi stands out as the most conspicuous and characteristic function of what we consider as classic Japanese arts, and occupies approximately the same place as classic Greek ideals of attractiveness and perfection have inside West.

With the core of wabi-sabi may be the significance of going past standard means of wanting and thinking about existence. Within this globe view, all points are impermanent, all important things are imperfect, all details are incomplete. To appreciate existence, should be to value it for what it is usually - impermanent, imperfect and by no means total.

The idea of wabi-sabi! correla tes with the teachings of zen Buddhism. The initial practitioners ended up tea ceremony masters, priests and monks. Zen teaches the significance of heading beyond conventional tactics of looking and thinking about existence, by emphasizing intuitive, non-judgmental insight in to the materials world - past our synthetic notions of intellectualism.

So far as materials factors are worried, points which signify wabi-sabi have a suggestion of the natural practice, are irregular in shape and have an intimate feel. In addition, they're unpretentious, earthy and effortless in type.

We don't have to head to an artwork gallery or possibly a museum to see wonderful factors. Get a glance about you. If your environment are anything at all like mine, I am positive you will see a lot of humble imperfections in them. Seek to enjoy what's there - as they are. Your reward will likely be a daily life surrounded by beauty, any time, any exactly where.

"Feel a Warm Surrounding with San Diego Landscape Design

The need for creating a natural and refreshing look around the multi storied buildings is increasing day by day. This approach is famous is for providing a warm and comfort to the surrounding environment and is often achieved with landscape architecture. The decor based architecture is designed with emphasis on natural, beauty and environmental aspects. The design platform is wide with range for making green infrastructure, metropolitan planning, designing landscape for private homes etc. Both landscape design and garden decorations are undertaken by the scenery creators. San Diego landscape design is famous for the aesthetic appeal it provides by combining culture and the nature.

The California landscape design is unique with the use of suitable plants and other accessories that makes the surrounding structure an architectural wonder. With various styles, fabulous outdoors which are complementary to the nature can be set up. Both modern and conventional architecture can be seen in a classic manner. A Mediterranean impact can be obtained to outdoors with different modern landscape design across California. Lavishness and warmth are the face marks of such designs. The accessories applied may include simple natural materials like gravel, stone, walking paths, fountains and unfinished furnishings. The appeal is enhanced by apt light works, patios and plant pots of vibrant colors.Florid bushes and green plants are employed in offering an attractive appeal. Creating landscapes in dry areas are often considered difficult owing to the difficulty in retaining moisture content by the plants employed in the design. Such problems can be easily tackled with the succulent garden techniques. Succulent means keeping the water in fleshy areas of the plant which is further used for the development of the plant. The San Diego landscape design employs this technique in cases of shortage of water. Plants like agaves, crassulas, aloes, and kalanchoe! sare exa mples of succulent type. The technique known as the xeriscaping pattern is used in areas with less rain fall over the year. The main benefit includes less water fees and beauty appeal.

San Diego gardens are popular for their Japanese patterns. The beauty is improved by having a central hut within the place from where the onlookers can enjoy the whole landscape. Almost all these have typical water fountains, bridges, stone lights and structures etc. Conventional structures like walls, hedges are made as enclosure structures alsong with pavilions. The conventional yet classic Zen garden design has huge fans all around San Diego. These designs are heavily influenced by the Zen Buddhism tradition and the gardens built on their monasteries. The attractive feature of such Japanese garden San Diego is that, it employs structures that can make the small spaces to look large with its architectural features. The garden can be set up with the help of professional designers or by hiring contractors.

Increasing Inner Peace By Reducing Your Stress

Posted: 20 Dec 2011 11:00 PM PST

Article by Sheryl Walters

Peace-making is a healing process and it begins with me, but it does not end there. - Gene Knudsen Hoffman

There is a great need for peace in the world today. Most people would recognize that on a global level as all over the world, wars are raging and every day more people are becoming caught up in the violent turn of events, but how about on a local or individual level? Do you need more peace in your life? I think many people would answer yes to that question. As the quote above illustrates, creating peace in your life is actually a healing process. It involves healing the hurting, malfunctioning parts of our bodies, minds, and souls and creating a new pattern of behavior which results in an overall sense of wellbeing and a smoothly functioning physical body.

This healing process has an impact on every facet of your being and on those around you. I believe that is what Hoffman meant when she said "it does not end there". Creating peace within ourselves can't help but bleed into our relationships with loved ones, into our community, and even out into the world. So, the question then is "How do I create Peace?". If it was easy to attain wouldn't we already be creating it daily? Good question, but not an easy answer. Unfortunately, there are many beliefs in the human mind that seem to nudge the potential for peace out of the picture. We impart so many pressures on ourselves, creating stress and erasing all possibility for the inner peace we all seem to desire. One way to stop the cycle of peace-destroying behavior is to practice regular intentional stress reduction.

While there are many ways to reduce stress like meditation, yoga, and massage, one of the most powerful modalities is called Quantum Biofeedback. This is a technologically advanced interface developed out of traditional biofeedback that uses a device called the SCIO/EPFX. It is an effective tool for reducing the stress that daily life brings as well as the stress that self-imposed pressures can place on our mind, body! , and so ul. The SCIO/EPFX uses energetic therapy to eradicate the effects that stress has on our body's natural healing functions. When that stress is gone, the body and mind function more efficiently and the healing process that brings about a feeling of inner peace is more likely to take place. Less stress also means that with proper intention by the conscious mind, those harmful beliefs that created the disharmony in the first place can be rewritten.

In addition to Quantum Biofeedback, another tool that can bring about a greater feeling of inner peace is called The Peace Program. This is another stress reduction tool, like the SCIO/EPFX, that delivers energetic balancing frequencies from a distance to the client all day every day. It works similarly to prayer, but is not restricted by any one religion or belief system. Instead it combines many of the official prayer frequencies recognized by many religions around the world as well as other stress reduction frequencies to create a calming therapeutic mix. The program works on a monthly subscription basis so all one has to do is provide some information in order to be calibrated into the system and then they, their loved ones, and even their pets can enjoy the 24/7 benefits.

As you've read above, the rewards of stress reduction can be incredible - imagine increased health, better relationships with those around you, and of course, a greater feeling of inner peace. The two options given above, as well as many others, are available to you today if only you take the time to do your research and give them a try. The gift you will be giving yourself is great and the lessons you will learn are life-changing. And remember, the road to inner peace starts with you, but does not end there. So, find the tool that's right for you and choose to make a difference today in your own life and in the life of your neighbors around the world.

Fun and Simple Steps to Stress Management

Posted: 20 Dec 2011 10:00 PM PST

Article by Darlene Siddons

Stress Management is the ability to maintain control when situations, people, and events make excessive demands. None of the stress management techniques that we look at today will require expensive materials and fortunately, stress management is largely a learnable skill.

Simple stress reduction suggestions, including diet and good nutrition, no junk food and lots of fresh unprocessed foods. Exercise and physical fitness are also top on the list; frequent exercise is probably one of the best physical stress-reduction techniques available.

Art can be a wonderful tool in the use of stress reduction, one that comes to mind is mosaic torn paper collages; when you are doing this art project you are using all of your mental senses and tend to not dwell on the things you are stressed out about and when you are finished with the art piece you have created a personal piece of art that gives you personal satisfaction.

Cognitive-behavioral techniques such as, imagery is a powerful method of stress reduction, when combined with physical relaxation methods such as deep breathing; learn and experience yoga techniques for dealing with crisis situations; self-awareness; meditation; Qi-gong; EFT; ionic detox foot baths and many more. These are all simple, easy and are all very effective.

Learning to manage time effectively may help a person to control stress. You also need to be well aware of stress symptoms in order to wisely manage your pace in moving to your goals. Handle each task as it comes, or deal with matters in some priority of like which has to be done today and then let the rest go. Like they say, don't sweat the small stuff.

The secret is to not only treat the symptoms of stress but to eliminate the cause. As a very wise individual once said, "Managing stress is like weeding your garden you can never get rid of the weeds completely, but you can keep them under control." When you're less stressed, you enjoy life more. As you learn and practice these techniques, your st! ress lev els will decrease and your mind and body will become calm and centered.

How a Tinnitus Stress Cure Begets a Tinnitus Cure

Posted: 20 Dec 2011 09:00 PM PST

Article by Alton Greyson of TinnitusStop.com

In the Part 2/3 of this tinnitus stress cure investigation, you'll learn why tinnitus freedom starts tinnitus-free thoughts.

Note: this is Part 2/3 of my guide to tinnitus stress-reduction. Also see, Part 1: goarticles.com/article/Tinnitus-Stress-Reduction-for-Tinnitus-Noise-Reduction/4736771/

You should now understand, or at least be expanding your awareness of, just how instrumental stress is to the ceaseless instrument tuning session going on in your head and how vital moving up the emotional scale is, if you're going to turn-down your "T."

Now it's time for me to show you how to realize the truth of these statements, so you can realize a powerful phenomenon that has been a savior for many tinnitus sufferers; namely, that curing stress can cure tinnitus. For the sake of simplicity, we'll call this a tinnitus stress cure.

The opposite of feeling stressed is feeling relaxed. When you feel relaxed, tinnitus or no tinnitus, you can't help but feel good to some degree. Feeling good, raising your spirits and the quality of your life in other words, means thinking about what you want instead of what you don't want.

To take this step towards a tinnitus stress cure, I recommend you get some guidance and inspiration from someone who has cured themselves of tinnitus (such as popular tinnitus recovery guide author Thomas Coleman, who counsels all his customers individually), or some sort of health-ailment which their doctor's tried to make their lifelong impediment with "treatment" the diagnosis of "learn to live with it."

This will help you see what's possible and start building your belief to a proportion equal to your dream of silence. Simply developing the belief that you can cure your tinnitus causes you to focus on the solution and not the problem, which brings incredible powers inside you and in the universe to bear.

If you don't get a mentor, at the very least surround yourself with positive people who encourage you to rise above your tinnitus c! hallenge in any way you can and not go on crawling through your life defeated by it.

To help yourself develop the mindset of a champion positively and purposefully affirm, "If I be bold, might forces shall come to my aid," or, "If it is to be, it is up to me," each day.

If it's hard for you at this moment to believe that you're going to get better with the right lifestyle changes and natural therapies, as have thousands of educated and motivated sufferers before you, than work on getting your mind off of the tinnitus that's overcoming you and on your true self by...

Watching a comedy or a comedian (Read the book Anatomy of an Illness by Norman Cousins to find out why this could be the world's greatest tinnitus stress cure)...

Cooking a wholesome organic meal or doing anything creative with your hands...

Having tactile physical contact with another person (i.e. a hug)...

Writing a list of things you're thankful to have and also one of what you want to get

Playing with your pet...

Excellent physical activities for improving your mental disposition include (these should be done daily)...

Going for a walk in the sunshine, while staring far off into the distance (this is a scientifically proven depression cure the drug companies don't want you to know about, by the way)...Jumping on a mini-trampoline (which squeezes toxins out of the cells and triggers the release of happiness inducing endorphin)...Doing stress-reduction exercises that involve postures and breathing such tai chi or yoga (which is scientifically proven to boost GABA levels, which I mentioned could be responsible for a tinnitus stress cure by themselves.)...

In Part 3/3 of my guide to stress tinnitus treatment, we'll discuss why you need to take the word "better," in the phrase "feel better" literally to start seeing results, the one technique that's guaranteed to make any tinnitus sufferer feel better, and how to retrain your mind to attract the tinnitus solution you're looking for.

The Famen Temple is of great significance to the Buddhist community here and around the world, as it holds a finger relic of Sakyamuni Buddha. Some 120 kilometers from Xian, the temple is a major tourist attraction. The temple itself was built during the Han Dynasty to keep the finger of the Buddha. At the centre most point of the temple, you can see a 13 tiered pagoda. There are also many other beautiful buildings that feature architecture of several eras. The Buddhist statues and other relics are beautiful to behold and have intricate work and detail. It is best to set aside 3 hours for this visit.

The visitor to the complex will encounter four principal gates, namely the Prajna Gate, Foguang Gate, Perfect Wisdom Gate and Bodhi Gate. Of these the Foguang Gate is considered to represent the light of the omniscient Buddha which is considered to be able to save all living beings from ages of torment. The Prajna Gate highlights the importance of Buddhist meditation through which perfect wisdom and finally supreme enlightenment can be achieved. Meanwhile the Bodhi Gate is said to represent the attainment of exalted Buddhist perfection through awakening to the supreme Buddhist dharma. On the other hand the Gate of Perfect Wisdom illustrates the principle of 'sunyata', as it consists of gateposts only, representing the Buddhist concept of the 'character of the void'.

Today the priceless finger relic is enshrined in the imposing Namaste Dagoba. The architectural motifs of the dagoba are considered to represent the Buddhist concepts of harmony, concord, peace and unification.
