Article by Richard Pettinger

As a young child Sri Chinmoy was brought up in a Hindu family. The family was of Brahmin caste but they did not adhere to the rigid caste rules and often helped those of other castes. At the age of 12 Sri Chinmoy left his village in Chittagong, East Bengal and travelled with his 3 sisters and 2 brother to join his eldest brother Hriday Ghose in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry. Sri Aurobindo was a pioneer of "Integral Yoga"

This was a modern form of yoga that did not renounce the world but sought to bring the divine into all aspects of life. For over 20 years Sri Chinmoy lived in the ashram spending many hours in meditation, achieving elevated states of spiritual consciousness. These states of self realization led to some of Sri Chinmoy's most profound poetry. In poems such as Immortality and The Absolute we get a glimpse of the deathless state beyond mind and form.

"My eternal days are found in speeding time;I play upon His Flute of rhapsody.Impossible deeds no more impossible seem;In birth chains now shines Immortality."

- From Immortality by Sri Chinmoy

In 1964 Sri Chinmoy travelled to America to offer the ancient spiritual traditions of India in a modern and dynamic form to aspiring seekers in the West. He has lived in New York since 1964 and has been offering meditations at the United Nations for over 30 years. Sri Chinmoy has lectured on spirituality, yoga and meditation at many universities in both America, Europe and other parts of the World. He teaches that all religions lead to the same goal and fundamentally share common values.

Sri Chinmoy's path encompasses all 4 of the principle types of Yoga;

Bhakti Yoga - yoga of devotionJnani Yoga - yoga of WisdomRaja Yoga - Yoga of PhilosophyKarma Yoga - Yoga of Divine Action.

Sri Chinmoy teaches that love is the most direct way to approach God. Sri Chinmoy often says that his path is in essence the path of the heart. If we cry from the depths of our heart the Supreme will respond. If on the other! hand, w e try to meditate using the mind, we will achieve only very limited peace. An important element of Bhakti yoga is the use of devotional music. Soulful singing is a powerful way for a seeker to approach the divine. Great Bhakti yogi's such as Sri Chaitanya and Mirabai spent many hours singing Bhajans (devotional songs), through this singing they were able to enter into the Divine Consciousness. Sri Chinmoy is one of the most prolific composers of devotional music. Since coming to the West he has composed over 12,000 songs in his native Bengali and over 5,000 in English. Most of these songs are devotional in nature; appealing to different aspects of the Supreme or identifying with different stages of a seekers spiritual journey.

Sri Chinmoy writes on Bhakti Yoga

"Ask a man to speak about God and he will speak endlessly. Ask a Bhakta to speak about God and he will say only two things: God is all Affection, God is all Sweetness. The Bhakta even goes one step further. He says, "I can try to live without bread, but never can I live without my Lord's Grace.A Bhakta's prayer is very simple: "O my Lord God, do enter into my life with Thine Eye of Protection and with Thy Heart of Compassion." This prayer is the quickest way to knock at God's Door and also the easiest way to see God open the Door."

As well as composing many songs Sri Chinmoy is also noted as a prolific writer and poet. He has published over 1,400 books which nearly all relate to some aspect of the spiritual life. Some books take the form of Question and Answer sessions. Sri Chinmoy is able to offer advice from the deepest spiritual perspective. Often these writings expound on common themes essential to genuine spirituality. These include disciplining the mind so that the seeker does not become beholden to negative ideas the mind can become attached to. This is a short extract from a talk entitled.

"What is Yoga"

"What is Yoga? Yoga is the language of God. If we wish to speak to God, we have to learn His language. What ! is Yoga? Yoga is that which discloses God's secret. If we wish to know God's secret, we have to launch into the path of Yoga. What is Yoga? Yoga is the Breath of God. If we wish to see through God's Eye and feel through His Heart, if we wish to live in God's Dream and know God's Reality, if we wish to possess the Breath of God, and finally if we wish to become God Himself, Yoga will beckon us."

From: Yoga and the Spiritual Life by Sri Chinmoy

Karma Yoga

Sri Chinmoy leads an active life showing that an inner life of prayer and meditation can offer inspiration and help to increase our own capacities. Sri Chinmoy says that spirituality does not involve retreating from the world. Instead he advocates acceptance of the world and the inner fruits of meditation he says can be used to guide and illumine outer activities. At the age of 74 Sri Chinmoy is still very active demonstrating that age is not a barrier to continuing achievements. Sri Chinmoy is a noted weightlifter and continues to lift heavy weights saying that he does so to offer inspiration to others. Sri Chinmoy also travels extensively offering concerts of meditative music in different locations.

The Essential Zen Habits of 2011

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 01:00 PM PST

Post written by Leo Babauta.

It has been a year of contentment for me, and Zen Habits.

Zen Habits has just finished its 5th year of existence, and every year has been better than the last. This year has been no exception.

Zen Habits grew from 200,000 to more than 230,000 subscribers, had more than 12 million unique visitors, and was named by TIME magazine as one of the Top 50 websites in the world.

But beyond those numbers, it was an amazing year for me, personally and professionally:

  • I publicly wrote, and then published, my new book The Effortless Life.
  • I also wrote and published The Little Guide to Un-Procrastination.
  • I co-created, along with Katie Tallo and Barry Davenport, The Habit Course.
  • I co-created, along with Courtney Carver, the Clutterfree ebook and course.
  • I became fitter than ever in my life, with a simple vegan diet and the habit of daily exercise.
  • I completed a half marathon, won my age division in a 6.7-mile race, completed the Urbanathlon, and finished the Goruck Challenge.
  • I traveled to London & Paris for the first time with my wife Eva, spent a month on the beautiful island of Guam, spent 10 days in New York City for the first time with my daughter Chloe, spoke at the World Domination Summit in beautiful Portland.
  • Moved to a sunnier part of San Francisco, while exploring the city by foot and fork.
  • Continued to enjoy a car-free life.
  • My other blog, mnmlist, grew to 15,000 readers.
  • I created an entirely new design for Zen Habits by hand, stripping away all but the essentials.

I did this mostly without goals, without copyright, and with contentment.

Most of all, I have to thank you, my dear readers. You have made my job fun, my work rewarding, and my life full of joy. Thank you for everything.

5 Best Diet Plans of all time

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 12:00 PM PST

Article by Elsie Boat

The weight loss industry is worth billions, there's a new weight loss diet plan almost every week. Most people are sick of trying new diets because they hardly see any significant results however they keep trying in hope of eventually finding the one weight loss diet plan that will work for them. People continue to search for the best diet plan suitable to their needs; in my opinion for longevity, success rate and effectiveness I believe the Hollywood five otherwise known as Atkins diet plan, South beach diet plan, Macrobiotic diet plan, Zone diet plan and the Raw food diet plan are the best weight loss diet plans of all time.

1) Atkins Diet Plan

Introduced by Dr Robert Atkins, the Atkins diet works by restricting carbohydrate intake; this lowers the body's stored carbohydrate (glycogen) causing ketosis. During ketosis, the body burns fat resulting in weight loss. Atkins weight loss diet plan is made up of four phases; induction phase which lasts for 14 days, the ongoing weight loss phase where carbohydrate is added in the form of nutrient-dense and fiber-rich foods, the pre-maintenance phase, where there is a transition from weight loss to weight maintenance and the final phase which is designed to maintain your target weight. What are the benefits of the Atkins Weight Loss Diet Plan? The Atkins diet plan is known for its high success rate for weight loss and at upholding weight loss for life. Also, Atkins teaches how to get rid of addiction of any food habit. For more information visit http://www.atkins.com

(2)South Beach Diet Plan

The next famous weight loss diet plan is the South Beach diet; this diet plan teaches a way of life where you rely on the right carbohydrates and fats. Created by Dr. Arthur Agatston; the South Beach weight loss diet plan works in three phases, the first two for a specific timeframe and the third phase for life. Some call it the "updated version of the Atkins diet".

What are the benefits of the South Beach Weight loss Diet Plan?

This! diet ai ds weights lose, lowers cholesterol, reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes, and eliminate cravings without feeling hungry. Some call it the "updated version of the Atkins diet".Visit http://www.southbeach-plan.com for more information

(3) The Zone Diet Plan

Created by Barry Sears, the Zone weight loss diet plan is one of the most popular diets in Hollywood. It is another low carb weight loss diet plan but it is not as low in carbs as the Atkins diet plan. The Zone diet plan suggests a balance of 40% carbohydrates, 30% fat, and 30% protein in three meals and two snacks a day. Because you choose which foods to eat, how much weight you lose and how healthy your diet is depends on the choices you make.

What are the Benefits of the Zone Weight Loss Diet Plan?

Weight loss is not the only benefit of the Zone diet plan; it also enhances a person's health, improves energy, improved mental clarity and is the perfect diet pan for people with Type II diabetes. To learn more about how to stay in the Zone, lose weight and lead a healthy lifestyle visit http://www.zonediet.com

(4) The Raw Food Diet

We heard it mentioned in Sex and the City and its popularity grew from there; the Raw food diet plan is based on the belief that heating food above 116 degrees F destroys enzymes in food that can assist in the digestion and absorption of food. Cooking is also thought to diminish the nutritional value and "life force" of food; meaning at least 75% of the diet must be living or raw. The raw food diet plan aids weight loss because it is a low calorie diet with foods made of natural ingredients. The raw food diet contains fewer Trans fats and saturated fat as well as being low in sodium and high in potassium.

What are the Benefits of the Raw Food Diet?

Apart from weight loss, the raw food diet plan also increases energy, improves skin appearance, gives better digestion and reduces risk of heart disease.

(5) Macro biotic diet

The macrobiotic diet has become! famous thanks to Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna. The macrobiotic diet plan is not just about weight loss; it is a way of life. Originating from Japan, it combines principles of Zen Buddhism with a Western-style vegetarian diet. The macrobiotic diet plan is also based on the premise that cooking foods destroys its nutrition so we should eat foods in their most natural form without damaging the nutritional value.

What are the Benefits of the Macrobiotic diet plan?

The Macrobiotic diet has several health benefits; the obvious one being weight loss. Also because the macrobiotic diet focuses on foods low in saturated fats and high in fiber, it helps lower the risk of heart disease, high cholesterol, heart attack and stroke. Advocates of the macrobiotic lifestyle believe by following a macrobiotic diet, one can prevent health problems and rejuvenate the body. There however has been concern expressed by some nutritionists and health care providers who believe an extreme macrobiotic eating can be very low in calories, posing a risk for starvation. The diet is also very low in essential vitamins and minerals making them unsuitable for children and pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Whether you are looking to lose weight, reduce the risk of heart disease, lower your cholesterol or just live a healthy lifestyle one of the above Hollywood five diet plans will do the job. There is one suitable for any health and fitness needs; after all they are the most effective diet plans of all time.

How Bonsai Became a Worldwide Hob

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 11:07 AM PST

Article by Andrew Kozlowski

The art of bonsai began in China more than 1,000 years ago, reportedly during the Han or Tang Dynasty, and was originally known as "penjing," or tray planting. The goal of the penjing artist was to recreate a natural landscape in a container that included dwarfed trees and miniature hills, valleys, rivers, and lakes.

With the arrival of Zen Buddhism in Japan during the Kamakura period between 1185 and 1333, bonsai was introduced to the Japanese aristocracy as a symbol of prestige and honor. The Japanese quickly became masters of growing these twisted and dwarfed trees in containers, and bonsai became a highly developed art form, especially during the 17th and 18th century. The tradition soon trickled down to the general population.

In the mid-19th century, travelers to Japan brought bonsai to the rest of the world. The third Paris World's Fair in 1878, along with additional exhibitions London, Vienna, and Paris increased western interest in bonsai. And by the end of World War II, the art of bonsai grew even more popular. Soldiers returned to the U.S. with bonsai trees, and the Japanese-American population at the time helped teach bonsai cultivation to Americans.

Bonsai exhibitions in Japan also increased international interest in the tradition. In 1943, the first Kokufu-Ten bonsai display was held. This annual eight-day event is held every February at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and is the oldest ongoing public bonsai exhibition in Japan. The Kokufu-Ten is the most prestigious exhibition in the world, sponsored by the Nippon Bonsai Association (NBA). During World War II the display did not take place for four years.

During the 1950s, books on bonsai art began to be published in English and other languages. In 1952, Yuji Yoshimura, the son of an expert in the Japanese bonsai community, collaborated with German author and diplomat, Alfred Koehn, to give demonstrations and offer the first formal bonsai courses in Tokyo. Yoshimura's 1937 book, Japanese Tray Landscapes, w! as publi shed in English, and in 1957 he wrote The Art of Bonsai in English with one of his students. This book, which discusses both bonsai cultivation and propagation, came to be known as the "classic Japanese bonsai bible for westerners." More books in English, Japanese, and eventually other languages, were also published over the next several decades.

Bonsai nurseries and clubs also became more common outside Japan. Individuals and groups went to Japan to study at Japanese bonsai nurseries, and brought back their newfound expertise to local clubs. In 1967 the American Bonsai Association was founded, and in 1970 a World's Fair-Expo '70-was held in Osaka. A large bonsai display was part of this event. As the 1970s continued, three monthly bonsai magazines were founded: Bonsai Sekai, Satsuki Kenkyu, and Shizen to Bonsai. In 1980, the first World Bonsai Convention was held in Osaka during the World Bonsai and Suiseki Exhibition. Suiseki is the Japanese art of stone appreciation; these stones often resemble animal or human figures or landscapes.

Today, bonsai conventions are held around the world. Bonsai trees, pots, tools, and gardening supplies are available not just from Japan, but also at specialty nurseries worldwide. There are more than 1,000 books on bonsai and related arts, dozens of magazines, and clubs that celebrate the art of bonsai.

Wrong Resolutions: 5 Tips for Finally Changing Your Habits

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 11:00 AM PST

new year's resolution, new year's toast. champagne toast, health

Who among us hasn't approached New Year's – at least once – pledging to lose weight? 'Tis the season for resolutions, whether it's to drop pounds, stop smoking, work less (or more), or clear the clutter from our homes.

But laudable as it may be, setting specific goals isn't the way to go, experts say. For a better shot at succeeding, we need instead to change our habits – defined as recurrent, often unconscious patterns of behavior that we frequently repeat.

"It's definitely better to create what I call process goals, rather than outcome goals," said Art Markman, a professor of psychology and marketing at University of Texas at Austin and author of the upcoming book, "Smart Thinking: Three Essential Keys to Solve Problems, Innovate and Get Things Done" (Penguin Group, 2012.

"We're better off saying, 'I'm going to exercise every Tuesday and Thursday at 4 p.m. at the gym up the street' than, 'I'm going to lose 20 pounds,'" Markman said. "The goal of losing 20 pounds is too abstract to carry out – if we knew how to do that, we would have done it already."

But habits – by their very definition – aren't easily altered, and moreover, most don't need to be because they serve important functions, said Ian Newby-Clark, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Guelph in Ontario.

"They become automatic or semi-automatic over time because they're done again and again – giving you pleasure, helping you avoid something disagreeable or minimizing thinking about routine tasks – like eating breakfast in the morning," Newby-Clark said. "For that reason alone, they're going to be tough to change."

Markman and Newby-Clark offered these tips to help modify your life, one habit at a time:

1. Know thyself

If you're aware you eat too much after stressful conversations, or crave cigarettes at certain points of the day, then you've got a head start at turning those hankerings around. "It's important to understand your triggers for the habit," Markman said. "You need to know what you're actually planning for."

He suggested spending two weeks generating a "habit diary," which could be a notebook or smartphone app where you record your thoughts and feelings each time you notice behaviors relating to a habit you'd like to adjust. "Don't try to change things yet, just understand what you're doing," he advised, "because you're making mindless things mindful."

2. Start small

Just as Rome wasn't built in a day, years of poor lifestyle choices can't be torn asunder all at once. Don't promise yourself you'll exercise five days a week when twice is much more realistic, Newby-Clark said, and don't pledge to wake up an hour earlier each morning when 15 minutes seems eminently more doable.

He suggested making "mini-plans" – dubbed "implementation intentions" by research psychologists – that breakdown objectives into simple, almost brainless actions. "Simply telling yourself, 'When I wake up in the morning, I will grab my gym bag,' or 'When I see the fridge, I will open it to prepare a healthy meal' makes a world of difference, and makes it much more likely you will do the behavior," Newby-Clark said.

3. Don't replace something with nothing

The hardest goals to fulfill are negative, such as eating less or quitting smoking or drinking, Markman said. That's because these efforts center on replacing something – food, tobacco or alcohol, for example – with nothing.

"Habits are part of memory – taking parts of your world and converting them into motivation to act," he said. "You can't stop your memory from working, so instead you need to reprogram it by replacing something with something else." That means eating differently rather than eating less, Markman said, or drinking club soda instead of liquor at parties. The need will still exist – just find a healthier replacement.

4. Plan to fail

Just as it's crucial to visualize success, it's also necessary to plan to fail, Markman said. Confused? It's not that you can't expect to succeed with steady effort, but you will inevitably stumble at some point in the process – and you must prepare so that won't spell the end of your efforts.

"What can go wrong?" he asked. "If you suddenly find yourself at a party with a ton of food around, what are you going to do? Eat a little in advance so you're not starving and everything doesn't leap off the buffet table and onto your plate. Whatever it is, have a plan."

5. Be kind to yourself

When slip-ups do occur, try to keep the bigger picture in mind. Too many people cheat on their diets, for example, and decide that a single mistake has doomed the entire plan – a phenomenon Markman said is known as the "what-the-hell effect" (as in, "What the hell, now that I've eaten that cupcake I may as well eat two more.")

"We've all failed at these things, so we know it's not easy," he said. "There will be times we eat too much . . . but rather than consider that to be a failure overall, we need to realize it's just one day where things didn't go the way we wanted them to. Try to learn from it, but tomorrow's another day."

Pass it on: Our resolutions to be healthier are more likely to be successful if we focus on changing our habits.

Meditate Your Way to Sleep

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 10:02 AM PST

Article by Edwin Mah

You had a long and stressful day at work and now you are ready to relax and prepare yourself for bed. But somehow, your mind just wouldn't switch off. You're still thinking of the events that happened at work today, or are worried about the important meeting you're going to have tomorrow. You can almost hear the mechanism in your brain still actively whirring - it just wouldn't wind down. You really need that quality sleep so that you can be refreshed for work tomorrow. But sleep isn't coming. You toss and turn in frustration, trying to force yourself to sleep - but somehow you know that's not going to happen, and you're likely to step into the office the next day feeling like a zombie as usual.

The above scenario may sound familiar to you. It happens to many people. Most of us experience some form of insomnia at some stage of our lives. Factors like work stress, a newborn child, or illness can add physical and emotional anxiety to our lives, robbing us of the quality sleep that we badly need in order to function properly. We need some form of help to clear our minds of all thoughts and worries so that we're in a better state to sleep peacefully.

Instead of resorting to sleep medication, which does nothing more but harm our body in the long term, a very effective method to calm our minds is through meditation.

Meditation is a state in which the body is consciously relaxed and the mind is calm and focused. It is a form of alternative therapy to de-stress and put away all thoughts and concerns of everyday life.

There are many types of meditation, and different people do it for different reasons. Some use it to ease symptoms of certain medical conditions, like heart disease, depression, or even to quit smoking. Most people however, use it with the desire to relieve stress, restore inner peace and to promote a healthier state. Meditation is especially helpful if you want to fall asleep. As the mind calms and thoughts are pushed away, it is quite easy to doze off.

There ! are many ways to meditate. Some people do it alone, some in groups. Some, who are new, engage the help of a professional guide or therapist to lead the meditation session. Generally, to prepare yourself for meditation, you would want to sit in a quiet location free from distraction, dim the lights, put your feet firmly on the floor, wear loose clothing that would not restrict your breathing, and close your eyes. Soft background music would also be useful. A meditation session normally lasts about 10 to 20 minutes.

If you're new to all of this, try using some form of guided meditation. Guided meditation is available with the help of a personal guide or by using a tape or CD.

The advantage of having a guide is that he/she can teach you the basics of meditation, help you stay focused and meditate more deeply. A personal guide may be able to pinpoint the source of your problems, and to find a solution to it. If you prefer, you can also go for group guided meditations, where a group of people come together to meditate under a guide or therapist. Group guided meditations normally have some specific area to achieve, for example, to quit smoking, stop binge eating, or to enhance spiritual growth. So if you're interested in group meditation, you should look for one that has the same specific problem that you're trying to solve - sleeping.

Do note, however, that meditation is just one of the many options you can choose from to alleviate your sleeping problems. It may work for some but not for others. It is not the be all and end all to your problems. Most sleep disorders stem from some form of anxiety or depression, and to solve the sleeping problem, the root cause has to be addressed first. Meditation, or even medication, is only a temporary relief and may not be a long term solution.

Well, temporary or not, meditation will still be useful if it can just give us those extra few hours of sleep and make the quality of our lives slightly better. Try it to see if it works for you.

Spiritual Nutrition

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 09:01 AM PST

Article by Michele Hébert

Imagine that you could select food based on how you knew it would make you feel. That you could eat without feeling guilty and beating yourself up, but be certain that you were making positive choices that included enjoying the most decadent dessert. Envision how it would feel to not worry about gaining a few pounds and instead have the tools to confidently and calmly reverse the situation. Picture your spiritual Self at the health food store filling up the cart with an array of foods to support your spiritual growth. What foods would your spirit put in the cart if your mind and body were not involved in the decision?

SPIRITUAL PURPOSEThe connection between food and spiritual progress is foreign to our Western culture. Many people are interested in spiritual development but consider the workings of the physical body separate from the ethereal being. Most spiritual teachings espouse that in our essence we are more than the body; we are something else besides the mind. We are Spirit. Our bodies and minds are gifts to be used to fulfill our spiritual purpose: to grow and unfold into the fullness and wholeness of all that we can be, both materially and spiritually. Inherent in this gift is the responsibility to care for our body-mind vehicle so that it will serve us well in our material lives and spiritual pursuits. The way in which we care for our bodies and minds should reflect this spiritual philosophy. On the spiritual path, we begin to see the interconnectedness of everything in relationship to spirit. Once we take up the practices that support our spiritual growth, diet and nourishment become of the utmost importance.

FOOD AND VIBRATIONLet's take a look at the big picture. Physics teaches that everything in the universe is vibration. The physical body that we can see and feel with our senses, is a highly refined organism composed of atomic structures vibrating at high rates of speed. Essentially, we are bodies of energy affected by and affecting everything in our environment. The ki! nds of f oods that we take into our bodies also have different vibratory frequencies. Higher frequency foods, such as living uncooked fruits, vegetables, sprouted grains, seeds, and nuts, are rich in enzymes and life force, which contribute to our vitality. Lower frequency foods such as denatured, processed, and chemically altered foods, are a drain on our energetic system. The body must expend tremendous effort to transform and eliminate these lower vibration foods from the system. Ideally, we want to take into our systems the foods that raise our vibratory level, manifesting in greater health and vitality.

MINDFUL EATINGThe spiritual path is our journey into greater awareness or mindfulness. It means making an effort to be in the present moment. When was the last time you sat down to a meal and tasted every bite that you ate? Try this mindful eating practice. Take a strawberry, raisin or any tasty morsel. Hold it in your hand for a moment and look at it closely. Notice the shape of it and the size of it. Smell it. Next, place it in your mouth and hold it there for a minute or two. Do not swallow it. Be aware of the different taste sensations and the way saliva in your mouth begins to flow. Now, roll it around with your tongue. Feel it. Notice every nuance. Then, slowly swallow it, following it down the esophagus as far as you can and stay present with the overall effect. The next step is to prepare a meal and try to eat every bite with the same degree of awareness. You will find this level of concentration over a long time challenging, but with practice you will be drawn into the present moment and acquire a new level of awareness and respect for conscious eating.

Substance and attribute

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 08:01 AM PST

Many Buddhist, almost as a matter of habit, preach that the Buddha denied a self or atman apart from the Five Aggregates.  However, it is actually impossible to find in the Buddha's discourse where he says this unambiguously.  Often he was simply says that each of the Five Aggregates such as form or sensation, are not the self.  Self, therefore, in this respect is neither form nor sensation or any of the other aggregates such as perception, habitual formation and, even, consciousness.  This is somewht akin to Aristotle's distinction between attributes and substance.  An attribute might be hardness or form, such as the form of a lion cast from gold.  In this regard, the form of the lion belongs to the substance of gold—the substance, on the other hand, never belongs to the attribute.  Attributes can change and suffer but substance or self cannot.

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 08:00 AM PST

Article by Susan Mary Malone

The last decade or so, we've seen a huge surge in spiritually based books. They've sold so well (both fiction and non) that most of the big houses have some sort of spiritual imprint, running the gamut from Christian Fiction to Buddhist texts to New-Age works a la Hay House, etc. I've seen a host of such manuscripts. Many of these come from counselors of a wide variety; many are scholarly; some from writers on a spiritual path. The majority of these have things in common: either they beat you over the head with their "revelations" (which needs no discussion--we've all had this experience!) or they're free-form, just shy of stream-of-consciousness. And while that may indeed be the manner in which we receive the essence of spiritual inspiration, it still must be translated into book form in order to be publishable, and to be accessible to the market--readers.

As with all true gems of knowledge, inspiration, even Truth (and isn't this why all writers write? To convey some bit, no matter how big or small, of something learned along the way), the success lies in the telling.

Now, I'm not here to proselytize for or against any religion, spiritual bent, or path, but rather as a writing coach to help writers fashion their works into true and viable books. Often the lessons along the way seem quite difficult, and oddly, the "spiritual writer" seems to have the most conflict with accepting criticism and revision, as if to do so would mar the pristine nature of the work.

All writers have that fear to some extent. The spiritually based ones tend to take it to the extreme. After all, if the inspiration came from God, Spirit, The Universe, whatever you may call it in your belief system, the idea is "who am I to question?" I may have missed something, but I never heard God say, "To edit is of Satan." Although, of course, many writers would attest to that in general! But in fact, the editing itself can be as creative a process as the initial inspiration. It's all in how you go about it.

This m indset, although seemingly mundane, is the point of creating a work that readers can grasp and utilize. Remember--you yourself are not your only audience. Yes, you are a vital one to please (that is a lot of why we write). But if you want someone else to actually read it, you must bring the work into a recognizable form, and one which others can grasp.

As a book editor, I see a ton of such works that go all over the map. In other words, the organization is off. Many need a much narrower focus. The ideas, while they may indeed be unique, go from Texas to Nebraska and back without ever crossing the Red River. E.g., you can't follow their path to save your danged life. Without a sharp focus and tight organization, the reader is catapulted all over the pages, unable to find the thread of the theme around which everything about the book must be weaved. Each chapter must build upon the previous, so that your reader's understanding and knowledge begin to grow from within. And that holds true for fiction and nonfiction.

I edited a wonderful book by Gerald Morton, Never Alone in the Back, which is a collection of stories from an EMT about emergency calls he's worked. It also weaves his personal spiritual path, and its evolution, through these stories, the inner mirroring the outer, if you will, just as in a beautiful novel. It was tricky making this work, but Morton is a brilliant writer (he's had both fiction and non published by Traditional houses), and he never misses a beat. Nowhere is the reader confused as to how these stories relate to each other and the broader theme.

When Randy Mitchell wrote Sons in the Clouds, he didn't shy away from the work I gave him. We focused on novel development and the elements of great fiction. He plunged in, and revised and revised, producing a beautiful book that fires on all cylinders, and which just happens to have an underlying Godly theme. Is it spiritual fiction? Yes. But first and foremost, it's a great read. And that novel has just been nominated f! or Globa l e-book award.

While I'm not in the habit of touting writing how-to books, a great resource exists for a more in-depth study of this. Spiritual Writing by Deborah Levine Herman with Cynthia Black, discusses some of these points, as well as the marketing end of things--i.e., the various genres within the spiritual market, where yours might fit, and how to identify it.

The main point here, however, is that writing a spiritually based book is not terribly different from writing any great book--from a novel to a manual on child care. All of them need inspiration at the core. All require good writing. And all must have the elements that make up a good book--theme, focus, organization and structure, pacing, flow, vivid characters, showing/creating versus telling, substance, voice, etc. You don't get a cosmic get-out-of-editing-free coupon just because you claim God as the co-author (just ask Morton or Mitchell, referenced above). Besides, I've never known God to be a sloppy Creator OR Editor. We're pretty much the ones who create the mess. And we have the God-given intelligence, combined with the resources available, to clean up that mess. The process is still about writing, editing, revising, rewriting--where, of course, as in everything, the devil is in the details.

How To Formulate Your Own Stress Management Plan And Why You Should

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 07:01 AM PST

Article by Susan Owen-Thursfield

Stress has such a significant impact on everyday living these days that you cannot ignore it any longer. But stress management programs can be expensive. And with increasing numbers of working adults suffering debilitating stress due to financial problems, you need all the help you can get to find an inexpensive stress reduction program… which works! Fortunately you can develop a stress management program for yourself by following some simple steps:

Step 1 - Be Honest About Your Stress Levels.

In normal levels, stress is not a bad thing. It is the body's natural response to life's traumas. It enables us to escape potentially harmful situations with the fight or flight response and it helps us to achieve personal bests when channeled positively. However, excessive or prolonged stress causes harmful mental and physical conditions which can be fatal if unchecked. Recognize and accept just how much stress you are under.

Step 2 - Recognize Your Symptoms Of Stress.

Stress manifests in different ways, including a dry mouth, raised blood pressure, fatigue, muscle tension, headaches, poor concentrating, memory problems, withdrawal, lack of interest in sex, difficulty sleeping and an increased reliance on comfort foods, alcohol and or cigarettes.

The more of these symptoms you have at any one time, and the longer they persist, the more stressed you are and the more you need a stress management plan.

Step 3 - Take Control.

How stressed you are depends upon how you respond to the situations you perceive as stressful. In particular, you are most likely to feel stressed whenever you feel out of control. One key way to manage your stress levels is to take positive control in areas of your life where you can get control.

For example, if you know you have an important work deadline looming, do not volunteer to organize the work social outing even though you did it for the last two years and people are expecting you to volunteer again. And before you start a p! iece of work, make sure that you do all the research. Let everyone who will have an input into your report know what you will need from them and WHEN you will need it.

Step 4 - Find Your Own Stress Management Techniques.

All stress management techniques work but they do not all work equally for everyone. You have to find which techniques work for you. Be honest. If the idea of exercise exhausts you, do not join a gym. But a yoga class might be perfect for you. And if you cannot get up in the mornings, do not ditch the train in favor of cycling to work. Being late every day will only cause your stress levels to go through the roof! Do not give up. Find what works for you… and do it!

Step 5 - Take a Holistic Approach.

Think holistically. You can go a long way to reducing your stress levels by taking care of your body by getting enough sleep, staying hydrated and reducing or eliminating alcohol, caffeine, cigarettes and drugs. You can also reduce stress by eating the right foods.

Step 6 - Sort Out Your Time Management.

Learn to manage your time effectively. This means learning how to not to waste your time and also how to prioritize it to make the most of what you have. This is a key life skill which will help lower your stress.

Use these steps to work out a stress management plan which will work for you. Tell your family, friends and coworkers so that they will know what to expect from you and will be able to support you. Be positive about your stress reduction plans. They are one of the healthiest and most productive ways you can take control of your life. Devising one for yourself shows that you take you health and wellbeing seriously and you may even inspire others to tackle their own stress with a personal stress management plan.

Recovery mondays- a buddhist approach to recovery

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 07:00 AM PST

A new monthly  blog last Monday of the month -  by Vimalasara Aka Valerie Mason-John

Why is it that so many people make new year's resolutions, and two weeks later, they are off the wagon?

Impermanence by Lyn Fraser

"A study in 2007 by Richard Wisemen from the University of Bristol UK showed that 78% of those who set New Year resolutions fail, and those who succeed have 5 traits in common.

Men achieved their goal 22% more often when they engaged in goal setting, (a system where small measurable goals are being set; such as, a pound a week, instead of saying "lose weight"), while women succeeded 10% more when they made their goals public and got support from their friends."  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Year%27s_resolution)

Of course, the date the new year begins is dependent on the culture we come from; not everyone writes down their resolutions for January 1st. Most cultures do, however, mark the beginning of their new year by letting go of the old.

In fact, up until 1751, the new year in England and Wales began on March 25th, despite the fact that the order of months in the Roman calendar has been January to December since King Numa Pompilius in about 700 BC. Many countries in Asia mark their new year in the spring period, which seems more apt for new year's resolutions, as the new cycle of life in nature is about to emerge.

Despite all this, the fact remains that millions of people all around the globe will be making new year's resolutions on January 1st. These resolutions will range from abstaining from intoxicants or from over-indulging in food to paying off debt, getting physically active, or being less grumpy.

Apparently, the top 5 resolutions for 2012 are to

  • be financially-savvy;

  • read at least one book per month;

  • eat properly;

  • get enough sleep; and

  • keep a journal of awesome moments.

Notice that none of them have anything to do with abstaining, which may be one of the factors that helps maintain a resolution. In Buddhism, we tend to think of vows—making a strong commitment to oneself. In the lay tradition there are five precepts that we can take and observe. A person may take only one or two precepts, or all five, precepts as a commitment to oneself to change. Though these precepts talk of refraining from an action, they are not commandments. They are what Thich Nhat Hanh calls "Training Principals" for the mind. Sangharakshita, the founder of the Triratna Buddhist Community has developed a positive antidote to each precept to help us train the mind:

  1. To refrain from harming living creatures (killing). With deeds of loving kindness I purify my body.

  2. To refrain from taking that which is not given (stealing). With open handed generosity I purify my body.

  3. To refrain from sexual misconduct. With stillness, simplicity and contentment I purify my body.

  4. To refrain from false speech. With truthful communication I purify my speech.

  5. To refrain from intoxicants which lead to loss of mindfulness. With mindfulness clear and radiant I purify mind.

These antidotes could be seen as the remedy for keeping one's commitment to oneself. Perhaps lending from Sangharakshita's advice, when making a new year's resolution for 2012, think about the antidote. And, most importantly, think about an action plan.

For example, the resolution, I will not overeat any more, could have the antidote, With serenity and courage, I purify my mind.

The action plan could be, I will seek help. I will record what I eat so that I notice exactly what I am doing with my food.

Awareness is the key to success when making a resolution.

Of course, we do not have to wait until the new year to change our lives. Some people use their birthday as a time of reflection. For others, fortunately or unfortunately, a tragic experience or threatening illness brings about period of reflection. However, after a period of time, we often find ourselves off the wagon again.

Buddhism, like many spiritual paths, can offer freedom from suffering if we are willing to open up to the core teachings of the Buddha. They can offer a way of living that enables us to stay on the wagon. Or in Buddhist speech, enable us to stay Mindful and Aware.

A short practice to enable us to become more Mindful

Take a long in breath – Take a long out breath

Observe a long in breath – Observe a long out breath

Become aware of the present moment

And Just sit –

Let your thoughts arise and cease

And Just sit – with heart/mind open to the present moment

Next Month – Exploring the first core teaching of Buddhism and Recovery. The First Noble Truth.

The Benefit Of Yoga

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 06:00 AM PST

Article by Alden Smith

Yoga, and the benefit of yoga, is generically defined as a Hindu discipline that helps unite the body and mind. Aimed at achieving a state of perfect spiritual insight and tranquility, it is practiced in the West most commonly as physical exercise practiced as part of the discipline.

The benefit of yoga practice is nothing new. It has been recognized for many years as the perfect discipline to help one achieve tranquility, better health, and longer life.

Many people view the benefit of yoga as some weird discipline that involves yogi's contorted in unnatural positions, doing strange acts of the body, and living on a mountaintop somewhere in India. I personally remember a television documentary many years ago featuring a yogi that had his tongue split, using it to clean his sinus cavities! Anyone interested in yoga has probably also seen images of yogi's supporting great weight with their genitals.

In this modern age, much has been learned about the benefit of yoga. Yoga practitioners achieve greater mobility, longer life, and internal happiness through their practice of the art. Yoga as we know it today is aimed at uniting the mind, body, and spirit. The mysticism of the Hindu discipline is no longer a myth, and is reachable by all willing to learn.

Yoga practice is roughly grouped into three categories - the Yoga Postures (Asanas), Yoga Breathing (Pranayama) and Meditation. These categories embrace physiological, psychological, and biochemical effects. In addition, clinicians have compared these results against the Western practices of jogging, aerobic exercise, and weight training, and find results comparable.

The most popular style of Yoga in the West today is Hatha Yoga. It is designed to focuses on the physical well-being of a person and believers in the practice consider the body as the vehicle of the spirit.

Ananda Yoga, a classical style of Hatha Yoga, uses Asana and Pranayama to awaken, experience, and take control of the subtle energies within the bo! dy, and focuses on the energies of the seven Chakras.

Anusara (a-nu-SAR-a)yoga is defined as "stepping into the current of Divine Will", "following your heart", and "moving with the current of divine will." This new style, which was developed by John Friend, is defined as "yoga positions that flow from the heart." It is heart-oriented, spiritually inspiring, and is based on a deep knowledge of outer and inner body alignment. It is based on the principles of Hatha Yoga and biochemical practices. Students of this discipline base their practice on attitude, action, and alignment.

Ashtanga yoga could possibly be the perfect Yoga for those looking for a serious workout. Ashtanga was developed by K. Pattabhi Jois, and is very physically demanding. A series of flows, moving quickly from one posture to another, is utilized to build strength, flexibility and stamina. This style is not good for the beginning practitioner, as it requires 6 series of difficulty. The physical demands of Ashtanga are not for the casual practitioner beginning the journey of yoga fitness.

Bikram Yoga, named for its founder Bikram Choudhury, is practiced in a room with a temperature of up to 100 degrees. Twenty six Asanas are performed in a typical session, and focus is on warming and stretching muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Each pose is accompanied by Kapalabhati Breath, the "breath of fire." Practice of this style promotes cleansing of the body, the release of toxins, and ultimate flexibility. One must be in very good physical shape to practice Bikram Yoga.

These basic definitions will give the person seeking the benefit of yoga a clear-cut understanding of what is to be expected, and will help them make the proper decision to find the discipline that best suits their needs. All The Research-Supported Stress Decreasing Actions Of Three Popular Essential Oils

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 05:00 AM PST

Article by Rebecca Ginger

Scientific research supporting the therapeutic uses of oils used in aromatherapy practice is being released almost every day. You'll find these research abstracts on websites like pubmed.gov, which put together all the recent medical studies published in peer-reviewed journals. Many researchers have realized that the psycho-emotional actions of oils used in aromatherapy practice are strong enough as well as consistent enough to warrant recommendation as complementary therapies in the form of all-natural stress reducing agents.

The three most popular oils used in aromatherapy in terms of research on their stress-reducing activity are the oils distilled from lavender, bitter oranges, and the heartwood of sandalwood trees. Every one of these aromatic oils have been the focus of a number of controlled scientific inquiries. The results of each is distinctly different, though they all have producedconsistent data concerning their anxiety-related activity.

Just about everyone knowledgeable of natural health has experienced the oil distilled from lavender. It is probably the most commonly-used aromatic oil, that's got an exceptional diversity of healing actions. It, by a wide margin, has the largest body of study confirming its stress-reducing results. Of interest is that it its physiological actions are similar to its psychological properties. Lavender essential oil is both calming and soothing for the skin, as it is calming to the emotions. Between the three oils here, lavender has the most sedative effects. Lavender improves sleep, limits aggressive action, and reduces anxiousness.

Sandalwood, distilled from the heartwood of the tree, has effects similar to lavender oil, though not precisely the same. The oil distilled from the heartwood of sandalwood is an anxiety reliever, though without sedating action. Lavender in fact slows response time, though sandalwood does not. In one study, subjects inhaling sandalwood oil noted a sense of heightened clarity as well as being at ease. A se! parate s tudy demonstrated breathing in sandalwood essential oil improved participants sleep/wake cycle, creating deeper, far better rest.

The oil pressed from the Bergamot fruit is the most frequently used anti-depressant essential oil, most frequently being employed with methods releasing its uplifting aroma, rather than being applied topically. Research of high school aged participants who wore aroma-releasing necklaces demonstrated a substantial reduction of both anxiety and depression relative to controls. The oil pressed from the Bergamot fruit is also known to lessen one's perception of pain. Bergamot differs from the other essential oil in that it is not a sedative or even a sleep enhancer, but instead a stimulant, yet it can also support better rest by having a happier psychological condition.

The question is frequently made by aromatherapy practitioners: "which oil should I use for depression and stress reduction"? The essential oils mentioned in this article are a great place to begin. You should try to test what works best for them. Acquire bottle of each and see how you react to their scents. You should appreciate the aroma for one to use an essential oil for anxiety reduction and stress relief. Lavender oil has been noted to be more liked by women, and sandalwood essential oil is considered a more masculine scent. Yet this certainly shouldn't limit each gender from experimenting with each essential oils.

The Benefits Of Yoga: Efficiency In Work Is Yoga!

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 04:02 AM PST

Article by Javier Fuller

The Benefits Of Yoga: Efficiency In Work Is Yoga!

Sometimes what a voluminous book can not explain can be explained in a single sentence! It is true about yoga. Yoga is not mere a word; it is a vast subject with many dimensions.

The wise saying goes, "Yoga karmasu kaushalam!' which means, "Efficiency in work is yoga!"

What you do is not important. How you do, what you do is important!

Yoga also means union. What union? Whether union between the body and the mind? Or, the mind and the spirit? The traditionally accepted belief (or truth, depending upon the level of your spiritual progression) is the union between the Jeevatman and the Paramatman- between one's individual consciousness and the Universal Consciousness.

Yoga is a very vast subject. Attempting even an introduction to it in a small article is impossibility. Nevertheless, some important observations need to be understood when you speak of yoga.

Yoga has got something to do with the health of your physical body.Yoga has got something to do with your mental health.Yoga has something to do with your intellectual health.Yoga has got everything to do with your spiritual being. The stage ultimate! That can only be realized.

No amount of assertions, explanations, and arguments and counter arguments can take you up there. The domain of silence can only be achieved through silence!Yoga is intensely linked to breathing. It is about channelizing the energy through breath. Another intimate alley of yoga is meditation. You can not think of yoga without understanding at least some of the basic techniques of meditation! Spiritual appreciation as to the nature of the human body who controls it all the times is absolutely essential for proper understanding of various practices that make the science of yoga.

A word about Karma Yoga here:The fundamental principle of Karma Yoga is "do your duty and do not ask for the reward."

The word Yoga makes its entry at this level thinking of an individual. The cor! rect int erpretation of this principle of yoga is "Do your duty but don't ask for the rewards. You will get the right reward at the right moment!"

"Every action has a reaction and the intensity of the reaction is in proportion to the intensity of the action." Over this the scientists and the spiritualists agree. One of the rare agreements between the two contending forces, though. If you agree on this, don't you think that it is necessary for you to agree that your every action, good or bad, will be rewarded as per the proportion it deserves?

Any doubts? Be prepared to know more about yoga!

Mindfulness

Mindfulness
by RubyJi

Article by Tommy Phung

Days seem to be getting busier and busier for people. Sometimes when people are doing a activity, they aren't actually thinking about the activity. An example is when you are in class. You're tired and you are writing something down, but then later when you look at it, you don't remember at all writing it down. At times, this can be fatal because you might be doing something you don't think is important, but later on when confronted about it, you are lost.

Being mindful is important. Awareness, attention and remembering are the three principles of being mindful. You have to be completely aware of what you are doing. Then make sure you focus on what you are doing and put forth all your attention on what you are doing. Lastly, make sure you remember what you did.

Being mindful can be very useful when you are about to perform or present something to a crowd of people. When you think about your performance or presentation, you get nervous, stressed or even excited. This will raise your breathing rate and blood flow. However, if you are mindful of this, you can calm yourself down and remain calm and controlled.

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness means paying attention to what you are doing, being in the moment, being non reactive, being non-judgmental and performing everything openheartedly.

Paying attention is vital to being mindful. Pay attention to whatever that is you are doing.

Being in the moment is also important for being mindful. You need to be aware the things around you and that the most important moment is now. Don't think of the past or future, think and live in the moment.

Being non reactive can be difficult, but it's important if you wish to be more mindful. Many times, when you experience something, you react with thoughts. You should be non reactive and react to the experience. If you have work to do and are not finished, you might cloud yourself with thoughts on what would happen if you don't finish or what happens if you do. You sho! uld not react with negative thoughts; rather you should just do it.

Being non-judgmental is also difficult. Whatever happens around us, we tend to judge it; good or bad. Whatever happens, you should let it be without judging it; because if you judge something, later on your judgments is going to affect your actions toward it.

Finally, you must be openhearted. Being opened hearted will bring compassion, friendliness, kindness and warmth to whatever you do. When you meditate, you might encounter negative thoughts about something of the past, present or future. However you must let go of this thought and focus your attention on what's happening in the very moment (meditation).

Mindfulness Meditation?

There are different types of meditation and mindfulness is one of them. Many people think that meditation requires you to focus on nothing, however this is not true. When you meditate, you want to be aware of your thoughts. Listening to every thought and letting them go without judging them.

In mindfulness meditation, you focus on one thought. Usually, these are either:• Your body• Emotions, thoughts or feelings• One of your senses• Counting your breathThere are two forms of mindfulness meditation.

There is the informal meditation where you meditate during daily activities. This can be anything from walking to school, driving to work, doing the laundry, cooking and so forth. In other words, you are aware of what you are doing.

Then there is the formal meditation where you take time and find a quiet area to sit down, relax and precede with the typical meditation practice. This usually lasts much longer than informal meditation because you can meditate for as long as you want in formal meditation, however in informal meditation, something could happen and your thoughts could change in a second.

How can being Mindful Help Me?

You probably been through a situation where you are lost in your thoughts during a class or teaching lesson, then when someone a! sked you a question, you don't know the answer to this. Being mindful is extremely helpful to you. Being mindful is being aware of what is happening.

If you encounter a problem, being mindful in this means accepting what is happening, and then acting accordingly. If you suffer from anxiety, being mindful can be beneficial to you. When you are mindful, you learn to relax and be in the moment rather than worrying about what's going to happen.

Being mindful increases your ability to be calm, relaxed and your ability to concentrate. There has been scientific research on meditation, and mindfulness meditation and the many benefits of them. If you want to live a more healthy life, you should take up meditation. Even 10 minutes per day can be beneficial for you in the long run.

How To Be A Real Ninja

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 02:03 AM PST

Article by Alvin Rinki

The ninja training was based upon being subjected to unfavorable conditions and aggressive environment. It allowed ninja to get used to being in any stressful situation and react to it in more flexible and balanced way. Training in the atmosphere of real action prepared ninja for being able to work out instant and spontaneous reaction to the changes in the environment, stir up spare capacities of one's body, use creative thinking and make up quick non-standard decisions in extreme conditions.

The study-process based upon actively-dynamic methods of psychophysical training implied paying special attention to creating the conditions of real battle. The ninja were taught how to fight using ninja swords and other weapons in the most accelerated way and intense rhythm and at the same time keep inner calmness, adequate perception, and efficient coordination of movements. The ninja had to work out their skill with the help of special "exercise machines" as used in the well-known Shaolin monastery - from death-corridors to automatic mannequins.

The Main Principles

Zen-buddhism worked out the principles of natural regulation that allow the person to use one's intuition for choosing the optimal way of acting.

How To Become A True Ninja

Posted: 26 Dec 2011 08:01 PM PST

Article by Alvin Rinki

What are the secrets of ninja's super abilities? Everybody is aware that ninja were skillful warriors, mastered their ninja swords to perfection, and could fulfill any even impossible mission. Their success lay in the peculiarities of their training.

To provide the complete psychophysical training of ninja students, they passed not only through the complex of gymnastic exercises and respiratory gymnastics but also psychological exercises aimed at developing intuition, instant reaction, combined way of thinking, etc. it helped ninja better feel their opponents in fighting, guess his maneuvers and react in a trice.

PHYSICAL TRAINING:

For example, a teacher held a piece of paper with his thumb and index finger and then suddenly let it fall down. The ninja student had to catch the paper with his two fingers. The same was done with a stick or metal plate, and with the student's eyes covered.

Two students stayed facing each other and with their eyes closed delivered a blow in turns, stopping their arm or leg a few millimeters from the target. The one who received the blow had to guess its direction and react correspondingly by blocking and eluding the blows. The same exercise was performed while using ninja swords. Gradually, the task was becoming more complicated - the teacher increased the number of attacking opponents up to the eight of them( corresponding to the number of cardinal directions), as well as the speed and strength of blows. The increasing complication was also characteristic to training in "the dark room." The training also took place in the night time, in the twilight or complete darkness.

Extremely complicated exercises and critical conditions taught a ninja student to realize his individual abilities and use the acquired skills in the most creative and extemporaneous way. As a result, the ninja developed their personal manner of fighting and "animal style" that corresponded to their natural abilities and temperament. A ninja warrior had to learn how to ! use not just effective fighting techniques but also different types of cold still, especially fighting with a ninja sword and throwing poisoned darts or stars. Moreover, a skillful ninja could use as a dangerous weapon any object that got into his hands.

THE MENTAL ASPECT:

Ninjas have to undergo intensive mental preparation during their training, and before commencing in every mission. They must learn to conquer their fears, control their pain threshold and be able to inflict fear in their enemy, sometime without engaging in physical contact. Original candidates underwent strict character profiling, prior to being selected for basic training. Mental preparation is the most important this to be considering when learning how to be a ninja.

Zen-buddhism teaching greatly influenced the ninja's approach to training, especially the idea of giving preference to intuitive way of perception. The ninja had to set free their mind from superficial knowledge, formal logic, and offspring of conventional way of thinking.

Anyone wanting to how to become a ninja, should conduct further internet research. There are many local trainers all around the world.

Buddhist meditation center

Posted: 26 Dec 2011 07:00 PM PST

Article by Rasmus Lindgren

Which center is best for you?So you've decided you'd like to begin or refine your meditation practice at aBuddhist meditation center. Yet you may not know of many good centers in your area, or may not be aware of what to look for in such a place.Meditation centers have been established everywhere from Alexandria, Virginia, to Safety Harbor, Florida, to Glen Spey, New York. Some people even have started chains of Buddhist meditation centers, headed up by traditional monks and/or seasoned educators but hooked up through the wonders of modern technology. The best place to look for a Buddhist meditation center is to consult your local phonebook or go online; better yet, you may want to ask a friend who meditates where they go to study and practice their art, or call a local Buddhist center or university to ask for their suggestions.Just as important as finding the location of a Buddhist meditation center is discovering just what they offer. You want to find a center that staffs trained instructors, preferably monks who not only study the art of meditation, they live it. You seek a center that has a clean, peaceful atmosphere, with a large, quiet area reserved for meditation and a resource library containing a full range of books, CDs, DVDs and magazines concerning Buddhist meditation. In other words, you don't just want a place to meditate. You want to discover a center that offers information and inspiration in equal measure, as well as a home away from home that will suit your personal and spiritual needs. You also may want to consider the individual atmospheres of any centers you find, selecting one that most accommodates your preferences as well as your personal comfort level. Meditation centers come in a vast variety of styles and forms, and are just as individual as the people who run them. Some Buddhist meditation centers take the form of virtual nature camps. They in essence are open-air retreats that provide lovely natural settings for meditative sessions, complete with flowers, plants, sunshi! ne and b almy breezes, and sometimes even wildlife. These centers enable you to get back to nature as you meditate.Other centers are more like Yoga studios, with exercise-style rooms and modernistic facilities, trendy design schemes and instructors in leotards. Still others are based in structures that resemble suburban houses, complete with large, comfy common areas and scenic back yards, smaller classrooms and practical furniture.Ultimately, you want to find a Buddhist meditation center that feels the most like home. Only here will you find the comfort and peace of mind you need to meditate successfully; to find and follow the ultimate path to full and true enlightenment.
