DID YOU KNOW?

Posted: 31 Dec 2011 11:00 AM PST

Article by Gene Neiro

Bonsai is a personal experience offering a remarkable amount of personal satisfaction. This art form has become an established pastime throughout the world as more and more people come to understand this fascinating hobby. Before you give way to your creative urge and plant your first seedling, however, it might be interesting to explore some facts concerning bonsai and how it has evolved over time. Did you know:That the origin of Bonsai, while often attributed to the Japanese, is actually Chinese in derivation. Many experts agree that bonsai, know as Pensai in China, was practiced by scholars, monks and the noble classes of China as far back as 600 A.D. A few centuries later, bonsai, along with Zen Buddhism, and much of the best of Chinese culture was brought to Japan. That the word "Bonsai", which is pronounced "Bone- Sigh", is made up of the two Japanese characters: "Bon" meaning tray and "sai" meaning plant, which when literally translated means: tray plant. That an earthquake is responsible for shifting the "epicenter" of bonsai cultivation in Japan. In 1923 an 8.3 magnitude earthquake devastated the entire Kanto region of Japan. Destroying vast portions of the two largest cities: Tokyo and Yokohama; along with a majority of the commercial bonsai businesses. As a result, the bonsai business community, in an effort to save their livelihoods, collectively purchased a tract of land outside of Tokyo, where their businesses once again flourished. Hence, a new epicenter of bonsai cultivation in Japan was created (which exists and thrives to this day). That in 1976 the people of Japan, in honor of the USA Bicentennial Celebration, presented to America 53 priceless bonsai trees and 6 remarkable viewing stones. These gifts were to become the foundation of our national collection. This magnificent group is housed at the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum, located within the U.S. National Arboretum, in Washington, D.C. It has since become the largest collection of its kind - housing bonsai from around th! e world! That all plants have a Botanical name -- a name that is unique to them -- and this is often called the Botanical name, although some people prefer to use the term: Latin name or Scientific name, instead. Plant names are based on the Latin language, which was considered the universal language during the 18th century when a vast majority of the "naming" of newly discovered plants was taking place. Botanical names are descriptive. They describe many characteristics specific to that plant such as: the place of origin, color, growth habit, leaf size, bark texture, etc. That displaying a bonsai is an art onto itself. The traditional elements of bonsai display include: a bonsai tree, a display table or stand, an accent item, and a scroll. Each of these elements plays a vital role in the display by constructing, generating, and producing an emotional and intellectual panorama. The bonsai tree is and always should be the most important component of every display. As you can imagine the foregoing is merely a fundamental insight into the world of bonsai founded on communion with nature. I urge all with an interest in this popular hobby to go ahead and create their own work of art. The principles of bonsai are simple and easy to apply and many invaluable teaching resources are available to assist.

How to Manage Stress using Meditation

Posted: 31 Dec 2011 10:00 AM PST

Article by Marcus Bookman

The use of the ancient art of meditation has been known as an alternative and natural way to help heal the mind and body. In times of mental or physical stress, some folks have used the powers of meditation to relax the mind and heal the body. There is a intense connection between the mind and the body, and when one is in pain, the other usually suffers also. Meditation can help create a balance. Studies have revealed that meditation can have a valuable impact on the health of any person, and these helpful things are not partial to the body. When practiced consistently, it can greatly play a role to the health and well-being of not only the body but also the mind.

In today's frantic world, the use of meditation to relieve stress is well-known. In fact, as the practice of meditation gains in popularity, an increasing number of people from a CEO to a weary parent are including the exercise into their lifestyle. In addition to using meditation to relieve stress, people practice it to guard against the many concerns upsetting the mind, and there is solid physiological evidence to support its success in doing so. With steady use of meditation, you may experience some of the following helpful effects: A decrease in moodiness anxiety, depression, and irritability and a increase in happiness and emotional stability, feelings of rejuvenation and vitality, and greater creativity. Many individuals have also reported a significant improvement in their knack to learn new things and preserve information. You may find that with regular practice, meditation greatly improves your mental state and may add to a greater sense of spirituality. The spiritual person often views the world in a uniquely positive way and is well-equipped to deal with life's challenges.

Though meditation is commonly recognized for its helpful relation to a person's mind and spirituality, the practice can also bear beneficial physical effects. Most likely, the first effect you will notice after continual practice of meditation! is an i ncrease in your flexibility which keeps your body alert and functioning. There are other equally important changes to your physical self that you might notice such as the following: Improved air flow to the lungs making it easier to breath, a decreased level in blood pressure, lowered levels of cortisol and lactate (two chemicals associated with stress), a lower heart rate, lowering of free radicals which can cause tissue damage, and a drop in cholesterol. The consistent practice of meditation can also slow down the aging process - especially noticeable in the elderly who often convey major changes in their vitality.

Stress relief is not the only benefit you may experience with constant practice of meditation. Meditation also has a profound effect on the mind and body by creating a balance that better prepares you to deal with challenging situations. Meditation is easy to do and requires little preparation or understanding. To benefit your overall physical and mental health, take some time out of your life for meditation and feel the power of a strong mind/body connection.

We've been very grateful for the support people have shown for what we do, and also very proud of the many fine articles we've made available.

So here, in reverse order, are the ten very varied blog posts that were most popular in 2011 (note that they weren't all published in 2011). We look forward to bringing you even more in 2012!

10. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. "Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step."

Climbing a cliffSome years ago, two friends took me rock-climbing in Colorado. I'd only ever climbed with ropes once before, and that had been many years earlier, so really I was a complete beginner. And nervous.

I found myself suspended half-way up a cliff, in a state of anxiety, with my friends shouting encouragement from below. My breathing was tight, my heart was pounding, and my limbs felt weak and shaky, but I didn't have time to think much about that. I was holding on to a narrow ledge that ran horizontally across the rock face — really it was more like a crease. The toes of my climbing shoes were precariously holding on to …

9. Love, sex, and non-attachment

handsIs it possible to be in a committed sexual relationship and follow the Buddha's teaching on non-attachment? Does loving someone deeply by definition mean we're attached to them? Sunada doesn't see these ideas as contradictory, and explores what an enlightened relationship might look like.

This year, my husband David and I will mark 27 years of being happily married. Am I attached to him? You bet I am. If he were to die tomorrow, of course I would be devastated. And am I completely unselfish in my regard for him? If I were honest, I'd have to say no. After all, what if he were to come home one day and say, "Sunada, I …

8. How to clear your mind of negative thoughts

The mind is like a wild elephant that needs taming. If you have ever meditated and tried to quiet your mind, you will have experienced your thoughts as continuous and difficult to manage.

We worry, we obsess about the same things over and over again, we are anxious about things that never happen, we want more than we have, or something different from what we have, and we have expectations of ourselves and others that may never be met.

What we think creates the world we live in. When we think negatively about ourselves and others, we do not experience the beauty and joy that can be found within ourselves and others.

7. Bodhi art: reclaiming the body with Buddhist tattoos

People often ask me why I get tattooed and why I have so many. I have 40 tattoos, including one that covers my entire back. I have also been branded and pierced in various locations on my body. I started out with a small tattoo paid for by my best friend as a 25th birthday present. He said, "I want to give you something that you can never get rid of!" I continued to get tattoos regularly, a couple times a year and at one point every six weeks. For many years, I was not conscious of any particular reason for being continually tattooed. I liked how they looked; I actually liked the pain and the feeling of being tattooed. When I was first tattooed, they were not so trendy and I guess I was trying to look …

6. Steve Jobs on death

I'm sad that Steve Jobs has died. No one has had as much effect on the computer industry as he has. His company, Apple, has transformed the way we relate to computers.

I only recently learned that Jobs was a Buddhist. According to his Wikipedia biography, he went to India in the 1970s and came back a Buddhist. In 1991 his wedding ceremony was performed by a Zen priest. He was a very private man, and I don't think he talked much about his religion.

I thought a fitting tribute would be Jobs own words, from his 2005 commencement address at Stanford University, in which he eloquently discusses how an awareness of …

krishnamurtiI once had a disturbed young man come to a meditation class I was teaching in Edinburgh. As we'd gathered and during the meditation instruction I'd noticed that he was unusually intense and that he had noticeably poor personal hygiene, but in most ways he seemed like a fairly typical young man.

In the discussion following, however, his conversation started to veer off into more bizarre areas. He'd had "cosmic" experiences during the meditation session — experiences whose details I no longer recall but which sounded very off-balance. His girlfriend was apparently an Iranian princess. He was being shadowed by various security forces. Later still, as we were winding up and preparing to leave, and …

Anais NinI sometimes think that my life has proceeded by way of a series of breakdowns and reconstructions. Such episodes haven't exactly been frequent in my life, but they have represented important turning points. There have been three times I can recall where I've hit emotional bottom, learned something important about myself, and found a release that led to significant growth taking place.

In each case there had been a long period of holding on to some pattern that had been causing me pain (usually unacknowledged). I'd been a tightly-closed bud. This was followed by a catalyzing event (in each case it involved being on retreat) in which I became fully aware of …

3. How to have compassion

Compassion is essentially the wish that beings not suffer – from subtle physical and emotional discomfort to agony and anguish – combined with feelings of sympathetic concern.

You could have compassion for an individual (a friend in the hospital, a co-worker passed over for a promotion), groups of people (victims of crime, those displaced by a hurricane, refugee children), animals (your pet, livestock heading for the slaughterhouse), and yourself.

Compassion is not pity, agreement, or a waiving of your rights. You can have compassion for people who've wronged you while also insisting that they treat you better.

Compassion by itself opens your heart and …

1. The art of self-forgiveness

self-forgivenessEveryone messes up. Me, you, the neighbors, Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi, King David, the Buddha, everybody.

It's important to acknowledge mistakes, feel appropriate remorse, and learn from them so they don't happen again. But most people keep beating themselves up way past the point of usefulness: they're unfairly self-critical.

Inside the mind are many sub-personalities. For example, one part of me might set the alarm clock for 6 am to get up and exercise . . . and then when it goes off, another part of me could grumble: "Who set the darn clock?" More broadly, there is a kind of inner critic and inner protector inside each …

The Most Basic of Meditation

Posted: 31 Dec 2011 09:00 AM PST

Article by tommack

The most beautiful thing about the outcome is that all needed solutions and ideas will come on their own, some straight away, some later. What you are gaining above everything else is your connection with the Universe and Its promise to serve you; all you have to do is to surrender to Its power, calm your hectic mind and start trusting which is only natural to achieve in meditating state. In my journey. I have come across many definitions and understandings of meditation. Meditation has been liken to witnessing the rising of the sun or observing the sea on a calm and clear day. You sit still and see beyond the horizon, see the sun brighten up a grey and wet morning and in that state grasp a glimpse of your true potential.

Meditation is that perfect state. That amazing balance of beauty, BALANCE and bliss. It wasn't until I started meditating that I learned it was even possible...and to be honest with you, even finding the WORDS to describe the beautiful benefits of a regular meditative practice is difficult. This step in mindfulness meditation can be difficult for many. The idea is to practice non resistance. With this we mean that if you stub your toe for example you should let the pain pass through you and it will quickly dissipate. What most people do is give the pain complete attention and tense there body.

The next meditation technique is Mantra Meditation. Mantra Meditation is where you say a word such as ohm over and over in your mind. In Mantra Meditation the word acts like a vehicle that takes you to a state of no thought. When repeating the mantra or word it is very common for the mind to drift off into other thoughts. One of the most popular meditation chimes sold today is this hand-pounded bronze Zen gong known as the "Chau Gong". The Chau gong is 13.75" in diameter and 30" long. Gongs like this are used throughout Asia to signal the beginning and end of morning Zen. Now you can enjoy the special sound of this Zen gong in your home or garden. Hand-hammered out of bronze,! it is a ccented by black ash wood and comes with a rubber mallet.

In eyes-open meditation (the 'open gaze' of Zen for instance), good attention holds the eyes still. This creates a fixed retinal image that uses up photo pigment (as in exposing photographic film), causing visual distortion in the form of light. Thus light has a physical cause, and more important, you produce it. Beginning is very important. It is the root.

Do not go anywhere, be with the Beginning. Your whole body is blissful. each and every part is important- when in meditation, mediate through your whole body. It will vibrate, allow it to vibrate, do not try to stop it. On the contrary - become the vibration. No matter how you choose to learn how to meditate, keep an open mind and consider all your options. Go for the solution which will help you achieve the best results from your meditation.

Sonja Grace Spiritual Healer on Portals, Divine Love and the Soul's Symphony

Posted: 31 Dec 2011 08:00 AM PST

Article by Antonia Wright

Portals

There are portals opening up all over the Earth. These portals are receiving energy and releasing energy. Many people have portals on their property and in and around their homes. These portals are getting bigger and in the future will get so large that they merge and become the prominent energy on the planet. This is the fifth dimension.

The energy inside the portal is often spiraling and or wavy with a sensation of energy going up and or coming down. Feeling dizzy and light headed is common as well.

There are other energies that use these portals for travel.

Being aware of what is going on around your house may already have come to your attention. Unusual sounds, feeling tired and then super energized and dizziness are all symptomatic of the energies from these portals. There are many people who experience alien beings coming through the portals as well as dreams, feelings and in person!

The duality exists in the Universe as much as it does on Earth. There are good aliens just as much as there are bad aliens. There are good people and there are bad people.

The duality of the Universe is something we will continue to experience to varying degrees as we move into a higher vibration and consciousness.

When we get to a higher consciousness we no longer have the need to assess the good or the bad. We simply observe it. Staying aware of your environment and not checking out through drugs and alcohol will help you to stay present in your body. Staying present allows you the opportunity to experience this as we move quickly with the energy.

Time and space will also feel a bit altered and your sensitivity heightened. Your fear will only draw you back into the duality and it is in this realm that we experience our resistance.

Grounding, meditation, breathing, yoga and exercise are all ways we can stay present and experience the moment. Keep your vibration high and connect with Divine Love. This will not only help you in this process b! ut it wi ll protect you and move you into the fifth dimension with ease.

Divine Love

We have all reincarnated many times here on Earth. Our past lives have created who we are today and our future self is helping us. We are evolving as spiritual beings and who we become in the distant future will one day look back at this as another lifetime that we endured shifts and changes here on Earth.

Allow yourself to connect with yourself in the future and receive the wisdom and knowledge that you have. Smile at yourself and know you have been living in four dimensions and you are currently moving into the fifth dimension. This will open up awareness that you are actually living in a multi-dimensional reality.

With one simple shift of your energy, focus on your heart and connect with Divine Love. Divine Love is the very essence of what we are made of and what we return to when we go back in to spirit form. We are all from Divine Love and by connecting with this energy we reconnect to a much greater vibration in the Universe.

Remember you are in the future reminding yourself to make this transition with ease. Your resistance will only delay your transformation. Let go of your jealousy and envy of others. Celebrate in who you are for what you do and what you bring to each and every moment of your life and the lives that you touch. Let others be who they are and celebrate in your differences.

The more we move into loving each other for who we are the more we move towards our own spiritual evolution. With a peaceful transition into the fifth dimension I embrace each of you with love.

The Soul's Symphony

When we have a need to prove ourselves we miss the opportunity to accept and appreciate what our energy brings forth. Just by being here on Earth we are able to contribute an important energy that is unique to each soul and makes up a huge concert of energies that all play together like a symphony!

Our energy is deeply connected to the Universe and totally unique with! in each of us. Our individuality is something that needs to be celebrated. We are not all the same and each of us with our own unique energy has something special that we bring to the planet.

If you want a more spiritual connection do your homework and process your karmic baggage identifying where you are wounded. Through a deeper physical, mental, emotional and spiritual process forgive those who have wronged you and learn how to parent your own inner child. This will lead you back to the center which is forgiving yourself.

It is through the emotional body that we are able to clear the pathway for our original energy as souls to come through. When you choose this path your spiritual body is opened and your evolution that much quicker.

Neglecting the emotional work and staying focused through the intellectual process can leave a person feeling void of any real spiritual understanding; for they are still disconnected from their feelings. There is no real experience that can be grounded if we are not processing our feelings on the physical, mental and emotional bodies. We are very good at covering up and medicating our unresolved emotional pain that can eventually manifest in the physical body. Yet this very pain is the key to our spiritual growth and evolution.

We must look at what is under that pain and discoverer the beautiful reservoir that resides within each of our souls filled with energy that is connected to the Universe and a karmic knowledge that when understood allows our consciousness to evolve.

Advanced Teachings of Patanjali: Mastering Samyama

www.pillaicenter.com www.PillaiCenter.com more videos www.youtube.com video library: www.youtube.com Mind over Matter: Understand Secrets and Power of Patanjali's Teachings The Age of Patanjali, the Father of Yoga, has just started. During the Golden Age, which is starting from 2012 onwards, we will recognize him as the greatest scientist. Patanjali is very very precise. The proper way to use Patanjali is to use his own words. His text is called the Yoga Sutras. The Sutras are very tiny phrases. Patanjali does not use many words, he uses only very few words to explain certain concepts. But, his use of language is everything because, according to Patanjali, creation itself is using language. You just speaking something and you create it. You create a psychological reality and also a material reality. Usually what happens, in human understanding, the psychological reality which is uni-dimensional is not the physical reality. For instance, 'home' is a word and it is different from the real home, the three-dimensional reality. But, for Patanjali and also for the angels, there is no difference between the idea and the object. The idea and the object collapse at a higher level of consciousness, and a sophisticated level of language is necessary to bring them together. This is what happens in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras; he uses language in a very sophisticated way. For him to say something is not to explain a concept or simply confined to the meaning aspect of it, but also to ...

Using Hypnosis Mind Control On Yourself And Others

Posted: 31 Dec 2011 07:00 AM PST

Article by Cliff Yvon

One thing that allows hypnosis mind control to stand out from other methods that people use to reprogram their subconscious mind is that it is not limited on who it can be used by. Hypnosis mind control can successfully be used on yourself, but it can also be used just as effectively on others. However, before you can use hypnosis mind control on yourself or others you will need to have a basic understanding of how the subconscious mind works and what techniques work best with hypnosis mind control.

Part of understanding how the subconscious mind works is understanding what it is. The subconscious mind is the part of your mind that handles and controls certain thoughts and actions, mainly the irrational ones. Your subconscious mind is in charge of all of your feelings and no matter how hard you might try repressing any of your feelings is almost impossible. However, if you know how to successfully use hypnosis mind control you will be able to influence your subconscious mind, which will give you control over all of your feelings, but can also help you influence others. One of the best things about using hypnosis mind control on yourself and others is that the techniques you would use on others are the same ones that you would use on yourself.

One question that many people ask when it comes to using these techniques is if they are safe to use. The answer to this question is that if they are used properly and for the right reasons they are perfectly safe to use, in fact many professionals use hypnosis as a means of helping people achieve their goals. For example, somebody who has tried everything to quit smoking might undergo hypnosis as a final means of breaking the bad habit. What the therapist is doing is using hypnosis mind control to influence that person's subconscious mind in order to help them quit smoking.

With hypnosis mind control the first thing that must be accomplished, whether it is for yourself or somebody else, is they need to be in a relaxed state, but they also ! have to be concentrating on something to help keep them relaxed. One of the biggest misconceptions that people have with hypnosis is that people who are under hypnosis are asleep. The truth is with hypnosis people are fully awake, but they are so relaxed that any suggestions that are made can penetrate the subconscious mind with ease.

One of the best things about using hypnosis mind control on yourself or on others is how successful it is. If you talk to anybody who has undergone any type of hypnosis, you will hear about how it has changed their lives. Hypnosis can be used to alter people's perception of themselves or even change the way that they think. Once a person is in that fully relaxed state the suggestions that are being made need to be customized based on what one hopes to achieve. For example, if you put yourself into a hypnotic state to help alter the way you think about yourself once in the relaxed state you will want to listen to tapes that send a positive message about yourself.

However, while hypnosis mind control can be beneficial it also has some downfalls. Before using hypnosis on yourself or on others, you will want to find out more about the disadvantages to ensure you are making the right choice. One of the worst things about hypnosis is that certain people abuse it, they use it to get others to do things that are wrong, or they use it to scam these people out of something. However, when it is used by the right people for the right reasons it is one of the best tools around.

Hypnosis mind control is safe for anybody to use, no lasting harm can be done to yourself or others, as long as it is used for the right reasons. Hypnosis can be done by just about anybody who knows how, but if there are serious issues that need to be dealt with it is recommended to see a hypnotherapist because of how fast they can reach into your subconscious mind.

UK downplays significance of rivalry game

Posted: 31 Dec 2011 05:00 AM PST

Ticket scalpers are the happiest people in Lexington, head coach John Calipari said, because of Saturday's game against Louisville.

"They're ecstatic," Calipari said. "People would pay what to see this game?"

At the bottom of the spectrum are the players, the very same ones the scalpers are happy about, at least going by how much stock they put into the rivalry game.

"It's another game to us," Anthony Davis said.

"I'm just treating it like a regular game, really," Doron Lamb said.

Both of those players said they haven't watched a Louisville game yet this year. Not on TV, not on film.

Of course, they've heard about the importance of the game.

"I get a lot of tweets, like, 'Beat Louisville, they suck,'" Davis said. "So it's definitely a big deal for them [the fans]."

Much of the neglect for the rivalry stems from necessity. Darius Miller, a Kentucky native, said he has watched a few Cardinals games. He thought about going to Louisville when he was in high school. So how does he not get caught up in the frenzy?

"It's not that hard," Miller said. "I feel like I have to in order to be ready for the game."

That's the approach for UK.

And if it prevents a situation like the Xavier-Cincinnati brawl from occurring, that's even better.

"Our team does not feel any hatred or animosity toward their players," Calipari said. "We do not talk that way, we do not play that way."

Even if the rivalry component is discarded, that still leaves UK facing a one-loss team currently ranked No. 4 in the nation. It will be the highest combined rank between the two teams in series history.

UK will be tested by Louisville's defense — the Cardinals rank No. 7 in KenPom.com's adjusted defensive efficiency, and will throw full-court presses and half-court zones at UK, elements the Cats are relatively unfamiliar with — and by Louisville's physicality.

"They're not afraid to get after you," Calipari said. "They're playing to be the aggressor."

Even if UK truly doesn't buy into the raised stakes of this game, its meeting an opponent that will be raised competition.

"This is all good," Calipari said. "It's a great experience for us in another kind of crazy environment."

Yoga- A Spiritual Remedy for Fitness

Posted: 31 Dec 2011 04:00 AM PST

Article by Kiara Winslet

The word yoga is based upon a Sanskrit verb Yuja. It means to connect, to culminate or to concur. It's the culmination of mind and body or the culmination of Jiva and Shiva (soul and the universal spirit). It's also a culmination of Purush and Prakriti (Yin and Yang).

The practice of Yoga bestows a rich and full life on each one who takes it up. The practice of self-restraint, mental strength, genuineness, compassion and selflessness add up to the practice of Yoga. Yoga is not just about the beautiful bodies of diehard yogis and yoginis, although fitness is definitely one of the major payoffs, yoga is a path to that illusive center we are all seeking...it's a path to inner peace. We're being drawn to yoga by the thousands because we need it; we crave what yoga offers and deeply need the body-mind-spirit connection.

You can also offer reduced rates to volunteers or "work for trade" programs to those Yoga students who help you with "domestic chores." You should consult your accountant to make sure everything is legal and "above board." You don't want to violate any child labor laws or set yourself up for any legal problems, so make sure you are following the law "to the letter." Remember also, that laws vary depending upon your location.

When a new student arrives to learn Yoga, he, or she, may not have any previous Yoga experience. When teaching Yoga to new students, it is wise to see it from their viewpoint. Everything is new, including your staff, your system, and your method of teaching Yoga. It is up to the Yoga teacher to make of all these components "user friend

The best way to begin your yoga practice may not be watching a yoga video. Thousands of yoga videos collect dust. And the simplest way may not be to jump into a session that demands too much too fast. The simplest way is to find the right class and the right teacher for you. If you don't know all about the styles of yoga, then discuss your own limitations or conditions with the instructor and ask about how y! ou might fit in to what they offer. Ask about pace, physical demand, level of intensity, etc. Call around. In Dallas there are yoga classes for all levels, ages, and conditions. With just a little research, you're sure to find what's right for you.

Yoga is like sex. You can read about it, hear about it, and watch other people do it, but until you experience it first hand, yourself, you don't really get it. So what's the excitement all about? Why is yoga showing up everywhere from auto ads to executive meetings? Why are airlines presenting it to their passengers and why is it featured on Oprah? Kids are doing it in schools; buff athletes are doing it, even pregnant women and the wheelchair-bound.

With the popularity of yoga rising throughout the western world, you have probably heard about it's healing powers by now. However, you still aren't sure exactly what kind of yoga may be right for your lifestyle. Chances are, you have probably asked everyone you know who practices yoga. While they may have a few suggestions, they may be bias in their decision making when it comes to which type of yoga you should choose.

What is Bonsai?

Posted: 31 Dec 2011 02:00 AM PST

Zen Buddhism
by araki

Article by Alfiejack

So what is Bonsai?Perhaps it is wiser to begin by saying what a bonsai is not. A bonsai is not a genetically shrunken plant, it is not given special potions to curb its size and, above all it is not kept small by brutality in any way. Actually, given a good supply of water, air, light and nutrients, a correctly looked after bonsai should outlive a full sized tree of the same variety. The origin of Bonsai, while oftenaccredited to the Japanese, is actually Chinese in derivation. Many authorities concede that bonsai, known as Pensai in China, was practiced by academics, monks and the upper classes of China as far back as 600 A.D. A few hundred years later, bonsai, together with Zen Buddhism, and much of the better of Chinese art was brought to Japan. The word "Bonsai", which is pronounced "Bone- Sigh", is made up of the two Japanese characters: "Bon" meaning pot and "sai" meaning plant, which when literally translated means: pot plant. Of course, the growing of bonsai trees has advanced much since its simple beginning as plants in trays. An earthquake is the reason for moving the "hub" of bonsai growing in Japan. In 1923 an 8.3 proportion earthquake devastated the whole Kanto belt of Japan. Destroying vast areas of the two largest cities: Tokyo and Yokohama; along with a majority of the commercial growers businesses. As a result, the bonsai business community, in an effort to save their living, collectively bought a tract of land on the outskirts of Tokyo, in the Omiya area, where their businesses once again thrived. Therefore, a new hub of bonsai growing in Japan was formed (which exists and thrives to this day).In 1976 the nation of Japan, to mark the American Bicentennial Celebration, gave to America 53 precious bonsai trees and 6 amazing viewing stones. These presents were to become the basis of our national collection. This outstanding group is kept at the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum, found inside the U.S. National Arboretum, in Washington, D.C. It has now become the largest collection of ! its kind - housing bonsai from all over the world! The most ancient bonsai in the national collection is more than 300 years of age. The bonsai tree is a White Pine that is affectionately known as the Yamaki Pine, in tribute of its donator, Masaru Yamaki. The Yamaki started its life in the 1600s and, despite being less than five miles away from the impact site, it survived the atomic bomb blast at Hiroshima, Japan, in 1945.Many of the trees in the national collection were presented as presents to different Presidents of the United States. Actually, in 1998, the Japanese Prime Minister, Mr. Obuchi, gave President William Jefferson Clinton an 80-year-old Ezo Spruce. The present was really significant to the national bonsai collection for two reasons: the first and most visible reason is the fact that it is a masterwork and the second, and lesser-known reason, is that the gift of an Ezo Spruce - any Ezo Spruce - to an American president is significant, because the United States has a long standing bar on the importation of all Ezo Spruce and, as a result, the national collection has been without an Ezo Spruce example. For many types of deciduous trees the size of the leaf is directly connected to the quality and amount of sunlight the tree is cultivated in. A bonsai that is grown in partial shade or in full shade will have longer and larger leaves, because the tree is endeavoring to maximize the amount of sunlight it can assimilate to enable it to maintain its photosynthetic processes - a larger leaf has more surface area with which to store sunlight. In contrast, a tree that is cultivated in direct sun, all or most of the time, will have smaller and more dense leaves, because it is getting all of the sunlight it needs. As a result, it can devote its energy to growing. This is essential for all trees, but more important for trees cultivated for bonsai, as smaller leaves are proportionate to the smaller scale of a bonsai tree; smaller leaves are, therefore, a useful trait, both to look at and from a growing perspectiv! e, becau se a tree is healthiest when it has access to all of the energy it needs to develop..If you would like to learn more about Bonsai, please visit this link:www.alfiesbonsaigarden.com

Mark Unno - Shin Buddhism in Interreligious Dialogue: A World of Teaching and Learning

Webcast sponsored by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and hosted by the UBC Buddhism and Contemporary Society Program. Based on the religious thought of Shinran Shonin, the founder of Shin Buddhism, the largest sect of Japanese Buddhism, this presentation explores the world of religious dialogue. Specifically, how can one understand the particularity of religious thought within the larger scope of religious diversity. Through examining case studies of teaching and learning, one can begin to see how Shin Buddhism provides a way to appreciate differences among religious perspectives while also finding common ground. Professor Unno is currently Assistant Professor of East Asian Religions at the University of Oregon, specializing in Japanese Buddhism. He is also an ordained Shin Buddhist priest. He received his PhD in Buddhist Studies from Stanford University in 1994, and has since taught at Brown Univesrity, Carleton College, and Kyoto University. He has published and lectured on Pure Land Buddhism, Zen Buddhism, and Psychology of Religion. UBC's Buddhism and Contemporary Society Program lectures are made possible by the generous support of The Tung Lin Kok Yuen Canada Foundation, in collaboration with the Institute of Asian Research and Department of Asian Studies.

Wat Ounalom, a Buddhist Legend

Posted: 31 Dec 2011 12:00 AM PST

Article by Pushpitha Wijesinghe

Phnom Penh, the largest city and capital of Cambodia, inherits a colourful historical and cultural legacy. It drives the country's economy and is recognized as a commercial, industrial and cultural centre. Once called 'the Pearl of Asia' the city is still considered a picturesque area, attracting many foreign visitors yearly. Classical architecture of French colonists can be found alongside local structures and modern buildings. Phnom Penh is overall considered to be the most modern of Cambodian cities.

As a predominantly Buddhist country Cambodia gives great importance to the Buddha and his teachings. Phnom Penh contains a multitude of Buddhist temples (known locally as Wats) and the Wat Ounalom is considered to be the most important of these and the centre of Cambodian Buddhism.

Wat Ounalom was constructed in 1443 to venerate a hair of the Buddha that was kept inside it. At one time the Wat was occupied by over 500 monks. After a period of neglect during the regime of the Khmer Rouge, the Wat's status as a major Buddhist centre was restored after the Vietnamese invasion of the city.

Now once again a vibrant centre occupied by numerous young monks, the Wat is an agreeable place for tourists to enjoy a rest after exploring the nearby Royal Palace. The stupa at the back of the complex is still thought to contain the relic of the Buddha.

Originally constructed by King Ponhea Yat, Wat Ounalom is one of Phnom Penh's five principal original Wats. Wat Ounalom is the centre for the Mahanikaya, the predominant Buddhist sect in Cambodia. Famed as a focus of Buddhist learning, it hosted the Buddhist Institute for some time. The Wat will undoubtedly maintain its status as a focal point of Buddhism in the years to come.

The discerning traveller in search of a hotel Phnom Penh will find the Raffles Hotel Le Royal to be an ideal choice. This superb luxury hotel Cambodia offers lavishly appointed rooms, fine dining and courteous service.

Global 'happiness index' ranks Canada 23rd

Posted: 31 Dec 2011 12:00 AM PST

An annual "happiness barometer" ranks Canada the 23rd happiest nation out of 58 in the lead-up to the new year.

Leger Marketing surveyed nearly 53,000 people in 58 countries, asking participants to state whether they perceived themselves as "happy" or "unhappy" in 2011.

Fiji was the happiest, according to the Global Barometer of Happiness. And, in a surprise to the pollsters, Afghanistan recorded higher happiness numbers than the United States.

About 60 per cent of the 1,003 Canadians who responded described themselves as happy, and 13 per cent said they were feeling down.

A large proportion — about 26 per cent — of the Canadians surveyed couldn't say how they felt, said David Scholz, executive vice-president of Leger Marketing in Toronto.

That Canada didn't rank among the top five happiest countries may surprise some people, but Scholz said the results may have something to do with how much Canadians want out of their lives.

"I think in Canada, we have a lot of high expectations," he said. "We expect happiness to be something spectacular.

"But what we define as 'happiness' is very different from what others around the world define as happiness. It's a bit of 'What are you used to, and what are you expecting?' We want more."

The survey assigned each country a "net happiness" score, calculated by subtracting the percentage of unhappy respondents from the percentage of happy ones.

Differences in cultural perspectives about happiness yielded some unexpected results for the pollsters.

Canada's net happiness score of 47 per cent, for example, tied with Japan's — a nation that was crippled this year by a series of deadly disasters, including an earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis.

Afghanistan, which had a net happiness score of 35 per cent, beat the United States, at 33 per cent.

"That was one [result] that stood out for us as the most impressive result," Scholz said. "And it's only by a few points, but people in Afghanistan are happier than people in the United States right now. And a big part of it is what's changed in Afghanistan."

An overall positive outlook in the war-scarred Islamic republic might reflect the de-escalation of aggression and violence there.

"In the United States, not much has changed over the past year or little while," Scholz said. "And yes, the troops are coming home and that's positive. But the de-escalation of the Afghanistan conflict doesn't affect the U.S. the way it does Afghanistan."

While Canada may not be home to the happiest people — that honour goes to the residents of the South Pacific island of Fiji, who scored an 85 per cent on "net happiness" — Canadians still consider themselves to be part of a "happy nation," the survey suggests.

Particularly those living in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

"The happiest place in Canada would be the Prairies," Scholz said, suggesting the return of the Winnipeg Jets and some unseasonably warm weather helped to buoy spirits in 2011. "Look at the year they've had. It's been a very positive year."

As for the unhappiest place in Canada, Scholz points to Alberta.

Although he said Alberta has low unemployment and crime rates, he speculated that feelings of dissatisfaction there may have to do with expectations. Albertans have apparently set theirs high.

"Do you want more? A big part of wanting more is when Alberta wants to grow and grow and grow," Scholz said.

Rounding out the top five countries for happiness, aside from Fiji, are Nigeria (84 per cent net happiness), the Netherlands (77 per cent), Switzerland (76 per cent) and Ghana (72 per cent).

The least happy place in the world, according to the survey, is Romania, which scored a negative 10 per cent on the net happiness chart.

Despite Canada's so-so spot on the happiness scale, Scholz said there's much to be grateful for, with the country enjoying a relatively stable economy compared to other places.

"We've seen what's happened in the U.S., so hope for an economic prosperity is diminished," he said. "We see next year as a tough year, but we're still going into it with a smile on our face."

The Global Barometer of Happiness study has been conducted annually since 1977 and has a margin of error of plus or minus three to five per cent. People were surveyed face-to-face and over the phone.

How To Recognize The Common Stress Symptoms

Posted: 30 Dec 2011 11:00 PM PST

Article by Matt Holmes

Stress does not affect all individuals in a similar manner although there are fairly common signs. These symptoms of stress can manifest in many ways from our physical health to our personal and professional relationships. While it's normal to experience a certain amount of stress in everyday life, it's important to be able to control it and not let it build up. However, if you are experiencing the following symptoms of stress in abnormal intensity, frequency and duration, we suggest finding the ways to deal with them and, perhaps, even seek professional help.

You eating habits can be impacted because of stress. You may find yourself skipping meals because you feel too stressed to eat, this is not a great way to lose weight because you are depriving your body of the necessary nutrition it needs to function. Unnatural reduction in weight can be caused from stress related eating disorders. Overeating is the most common cause of weight gain. Emotional eating is one of the symptoms of stress and it can be dangerous. You may find that it is hard to cut back on your calories if you are consistently eating. Keep tabs on your eating habits and if you notice changes you should take steps to manage it.

Stress can lead to life-threatening physical illnesses that are caused by high blood pressure. Stress can be a contributing factor to high blood pressure, along with diet and genetics. Even though there might be another root cause, stress can make high blood pressure worse.

Learning to manage stress can lower your blood pressure, or prevent you from developing high blood pressure. It's obvious to see why controlling your stress is linked to your blood pressure.

Believe it or not the symptoms of stress can mimic other more serious medical conditions. Symptoms of a panic attack brought on by stress include chest pain, lightheadedness and difficulty breathing just to name a few. Of course if you or someone you know experiences any of these symptoms seek immediate medical attention as th! ey can a lso be of a more serious nature. If you even think your condition could be stress related it's important to seek treatment from a medical professional. Your doctor can help you learn how to recognize the onset of stress induced panic attacks and keep them at bay.

There are a lot of ways for you to manage your stress. Change your situation to meet your stress reduction needs rather than simply trying to treat the symptoms. Aspirin can only treat the headache not what's causing the headache. If you find effective ways to deal with the underlying cause, you can improve the quality of your life in many ways.

Buddhist Meditation Retreats

Posted: 30 Dec 2011 08:00 PM PST

Article by Rasmus Lindgren

The perfect place to meditate. If you're in search of the ultimate meditative experience, thenBuddhist meditation retreats may be the answer.Buddhist meditation retreats are comprehensive centers for the time-honored meditative practice. This is a place where you can immerse yourself in the art of meditation, learning and practicing the rules and techniques that define this art. You literally breathe, eat, talk and live meditation at these centers, affording yourself the rare opportunity to visit a place of peace, tranquility and ultimate enlightenment.Indeed, a Buddhist meditation center may be the ideal place to learn about and practice meditation. Sure, you could always meditate at home; but you'll face constant intrusions from your family, from visitors, and from wonderful but loud modern conveniences such as the television, the telephone, the radio, etc. Home may indeed be where the heart is, but it seldom offers a guarantee of absolute quiet and privacy; or the pure, orderly atmosphere needed to facilitate successful meditation. And while a yoga studio or organized meditation class may offer these idyllic conditions, it can not do so on a long-term basis. Many yoga and meditation classes have a duration of only one or two hours per week; not much time to learn all of the techniques and positions associated with meditation, ease yourself into the practice, enjoy a fulfilling meditative session, and draw yourself from the dreamlike state required for its full completion.Particularly for the beginning meditator, the Buddhist meditation retreat is sort of a one-stop shop for all things meditative. You can read books, watch DVDs and-most importantly-speak to trained instructors to learn more about your art. You can practice this art in a quiet, clean, serene environment, one that is in all likelihood naturemade; indeed, many meditation retreats take place in wooded areas or on farms. So as you meditate, you will be immersed in a setting of flowers, plants, green grasses, light breezes, and even sw! eeter bi rdsong; the sun will christen your meditative efforts as the flowers sway in their own gentle rhythm. In addition, attendance at a Buddhist meditation retreat is in essence a form of insurance. You will be surrounded by a group of teachers and practitioners who share your commitment to the meditative process. These are dedicated, disciplined people who inspire you to stay the course. They will not allow you to stray from the precepts that are so very vital to the cause of successful meditation. They will be there for you at all times, just as you are there for them.Buddhist meditation retreats offer the ideal atmosphere for the pursuit of full and ultimate enlightenment. Check your local phonebook or the Internet for the location of Buddhist meditation retreats near you.
