How much we weigh as adults is more influenced by the people around us during childhood than those we spend time with as adults, a new study suggests.

The study compared the weights of 236 pairs of adolescent siblings who lived together, and 838 pairs of adult siblings who did not live together. In both groups, the body mass indices (BMIs) of siblings became more similar over time. Body mass index is a ratio of weight to height, and is considered an indicator of body fatness.

The researchers found that family factors, such as heredity and a similar upbringing, explained similarities in BMI in both the siblings who lived together and those siblings who didn't. This suggests that behaviors formed in childhood are carried into adulthood, said study researcher Heather Brown, of Newcastle University in the United Kingdom.

The findings demonstrate the importance of early interventions to prevent obesity, Brown said.

The results also suggest the effect of our adult social networks on our weight may have been overestimated, the researchers said. In the study, factors that changed over time, such as friends and opportunities for exercise, explained similarities in BMI only for adolescent siblings.

That's not to say that our larger social circles aren't important, Brown said. But it may be that the people we interact with intimately, such as those in our household, are the most important people in terms of influencing our health-related behaviors, Brown said.

As we grow up, our siblings may have less of an impact on our weight, because we move to different households. Indeed, although siblings were similar in BMI in both childhood and adulthood, they were less similar in adulthood.

The findings do not overturn the idea that obesity can "spread" between friendswho are grown adults, said Daniel Hruschka, of the Arizona State University School of Human Evolution and Social Change, who was not involved in the study. The study can only speak to changes in social interactions between siblings, and suggests that as we grow up, obesity may not "spread" between siblings as easily as when we're young.

But our social networks outside our immediate siblings may still contribute to obesity spread, Hruschka said.

The study is published today (Dec. 15) in the journal Obesity.

Pass it on: To prevent obesity, it may be best to target interventions to in childhood, when habits that influence weight are formed.

Meditation - The Road To Corporate Success

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 02:00 PM PST

Article by Dr. Robert Puff

If you are running an organization, you want your employees to be agile, productive, happy and rake in the profits. But all can you see is a list piling up of sick leaves and medical claims from your work force. The reason is the increased stress that is causing their productivity to plummet and leading to your own stress sky-rocketing. It is time for you to turn your employees to meditation, a sure way of beating that stress.

Here are a few statistics to help you understand how much financial loss these stress related leaves cause. The British government's Health and Safety Commission has declared that in England, work-related stress is the leading cause of working days lost through injury or ill health. For each employee, an average of 29 days is lost every year. Further calculations show that this equates to an estimated four billion pounds sterling per year. The American Institute of Stress has estimated that in the United States, 0 billion (or ,500 per employee) is spent every year on stress-related compensation claims, reduced productivity, absenteeism, health insurance costs and direct medical expenses!

The loss is huge, and you need to stop it now. The tried and trusted way out is through meditation. Meditating can be really beneficial for your employees. It will lead to better stress management, better health management and eventually, better productivity. Meditation affects brain activity, in the limbic nervous system. This in turn controls metabolism, blood pressure, respiration and heart rate. The result - a calmer and healthier person emerges after a meditation session.

Corporates all over the world realize the importance of meditation. Most employees do complex multitasking, making them prey to anxiety and hampering clear thinking. With meditation, they can calm their nervousness, focus their attention and be more productive. What does a happy, healthy and stress-free employee mean for a corporate? Well here is the impressive list:

Reduced costs of staff a! bsenteei sm due to stress, long term illness, or injury.

Better productivity and functionality. Employees have better concentration, learning ability and creativity.

With happy employees, there is a possibility of enhanced employer/employee and client relationships.

Reduced staff turnover and associated costs

Reduced corporate health insurance premiums.

Higher employee satisfaction

The corporate comes across as successful and employee friendly in the business arena.

It is thus pretty clear that both executives and employees gain comprehensive benefits from meditation. Meditation and spiritual management have gained new importance for organizations, and an increasing number of managers are willing to explore its benefits for their business. You should also be open to the implementation of meditation at work, and within a short time you will see how it improves the whole work environment.

However, as a business owner, you must choose a meditation guru who will guide your employees in the best way. The employees must be comfortable with the motivational speaker, who will make them understand why they are taking this class and how will they benefit. Moreover, an expert meditation guru will also show them the ropes of a variety of meditation techniques such as following the breath, gazing at the ocean, guided meditations, etc. Furthermore, with time being the biggest obstacle to practicing regular or longer meditation, the option of mini-meditations, in which one can calm one's thoughts and manage stress levels during a short coffee break session, should also be explored,

Save absenteeism costs and increase your employees' productivity, and get a healthier work environment right now. Be sure to find somebody who is an expert in meditation and is a spiritual management guru Meditation can be extremely beneficial and even life changing in certain cases. Adopt it now!

Meditation - An Amazing Stress Reduction Technique That Is Easy To Do

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 01:00 PM PST

Article by Cucan Pemo

Meditation has a reputation as an activity related to religious practices and hippy-dippy pseudo-science. This is unfortunate, because meditation is a simple, effective stress management tool that can be used by a anyone - and solid medical research has shown that meditation is highly effective as a way to lower stress and even manage pain.

It's particularly effective at the end of a long, stressful day - you can set aside a short period when you get home from work, meditate, and then enjoy your evening with a clear mind and more relaxed body.

Why meditation is great for stress

One of the pioneers of serious meditation research was Harvard's Dr. Herbert Benson, who's 1968 book "The Relaxation Response" showed that meditation had a measurable affect on stress, slowing breathing and heartbeat and lessening the body's natural fight-or-flight response. Meditation will allow you to relax your body and focus your thoughts, thus focusing your mind and allowing you to let go of the day's troubles. It allows your body to refresh its resources, which is good for your immune system, your blood pressure and your mental outlook.

When you meditate, your heart rate and breathing slow down, your blood pressure normalizes, and you use oxygen more efficiently. Your adrenal glands produce less cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline and you produce good, healing. Your mind clears, allowing you harper thought and greater creativity. Meditation has proved beneficial for people trying to give up smoking, drinking and drugs.

Simple meditation for anyone

Meditation isn't a mystical, mysterious practice. It's easy to do, and doesn't take any special equipment or training. Meditation involves sitting in a relaxed position and clearing your mind. There are a number of methods for meditation - you can focus on a sound (like "om"), or on your own breathing, or on an object, or on nothing at all. You just need at least 10 minutes of quiet, free of distraction, although some people find that,! with pr actice, they can meditate anywhere.

Here's a couple of basic techniques:

1) Simple Breathing Meditation

Find a quiet room, and sit in a comfortable position, either on the floor or in a chair. Close your eyes.

Consciously relax the muscles in your feet, then your calves, and work way up your body until everything is loose.

Now focus your attention on your breathing. Breathe in deeply through your nose, and then let your breath out through your mouth. Count your breaths, and say the number of the breath as you let it out, which helps you to focus your mind and avoid distraction.

Do this for 10 or 20 minutes, then allow yourself to slowly come back up to full speed.

2) Focused Object Meditation

Choose an object, any object - a vase of flowers, a burning candle, a beautiful piece of fabric with a complex design. It can even be a coffee mug or a lamp.

Examine the shape, colors, shadow and light, texture movement of the object. Breathe deeply and rhythmically, and let your mind go wherever it wants, but stay focused on the object. Allow yourself at least 10 minutes to examine every detail.

3) Focused Sound Meditation.

Make a sound, over and over, focusing entirely on the vibration and tone. The classic meditation sound is "Om," the Sanskrit word for perfection. Use the same rhythmic breathing to help slow your heartbeat and focus your mind.

4) Focused Imagery Meditation

Here, you create a mental image in your mind of a happy, relaxing place. You could be on a tropical beach, or floating on a raft in a mountain lake, or even lying in a king-sized bed in a luxury hotel - whatever you find the most calm and restful to think about. Breathe in and out, slowly and rhythmically. As thoughts enter your mind, let them drift back out - focus entirely on your "happy place as you breathe.

Unlike the use of prescription medication and herbal therapies, there are no potential side effects to meditation, and it doesn't cost anything. No spe! cial equ ipment is required, and you can meditate no matter what your physical limitations. It does take some commitment and patience, but after a few sessions, you'll find that meditation is a wonderful method for relieving stress - and you can do it anywhere!

Treating Pedophiles: Therapy Can Work, But It's a Challenge

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 01:00 PM PST

CREDIT: Jail cell photo via Shutterstock

For years David Prescott sat face to face with pedophiles, trying to evaluate if the people before him were making progress in treatment.

Prescott is a licensed therapist who worked in Minnesota, one of the 20 states that have passed civil commitment laws. Courts in these states have the power to confine child molesters, rapists and other sex offenders who have finished their prison sentences but are deemed too dangerous to re-enter the community. The former inmates can stay there indefinitely, or until they prove therapy has made them safe to leave.

"So far, research shows that treatment very definitely can work," Prescott said. But critics of the treatment point out that psychotherapy doesn't work if someone drops out of therapy, or is kicked out. And treatment centers can cost tens of thousands of dollars per person each year. A 2011 government audit showed Minnesota spent $ 120,000 annually per person in civil commitment.

Two decades of published work with sex offenders haven't produced a cure, Prescott said. Instead, therapists aim to help pedophiles resist their urges.

"We don't know how to change the fact that a person is sexually attracted to children," said Dr. Fred Berlin, director of the Johns Hopkins Sexual Disorders Clinic in Baltimore. "But that doesn't mean there can't be successful treatment."

A New, Challenging Treatment for Pedophiles

In the early 1980s, therapists focused on a pedophile's sexual attractions in harsh and confrontational tones. But research has since shown an empathetic tone is more effective, said Prescott, a past president of the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers who is now the clinical instructor of the Becket Family of Services Center in Maine.

"Let me just be clear, you can be very challenging by being warm and empathic," Prescott said. For instance, Prescott said he might respond to someone resisting group therapy by saying, "You don't like the term sex offender, and yet your victim was willing to testify against you?"

Many pedophiles have issues with their personal boundaries and interpersonal violence, said Robin Wilson, an assistant professor of psychiatry at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Treating these issues may keep them from abusing others.

But perhaps more important, Wilson said, is for a convicted sex offender to build up the support of people who will hold him accountable for good behavior once he re-enters the community. (Wilson estimates 5 percent or less of pedophiles are female.)

"There's a common misperception that sex offenders are sex offenders all the time. That's not necessarily true. Under certain circumstances they do have normal relationships," Wilson said.

Some pedophiles might be able to turn their sexual attractions toward healthy adult relationships, said Dr. Richard Krueger, who is in the group working on updating the information about pedophilia in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the handbook professionals use in diagnosing patients. [Hypersex to Hoarding: 7 New Psychological Disorders]

For example, Krueger argues there is the "hebephilic" type of pedophile, who is sexually attracted to pubescent children, and the "pedohebephilic" type, who is sexually attracted to both prepubescent and pubescent children. People with these attractions can sometimes be nudged into focusing on adults, said Krueger, who is the medical director of the Sexual Behavior Clinic at New York State Psychiatric Institute in New York.

However, pedophiles who fall under the "classic type," and are attracted only to prepubescent children, usually under age 11, often don't change their focus, Krueger said.

"With some pedophiles who are fixated, you can't really make much of a dent; you may not be able to change their sexual interest pattern," Krueger said. "In these situations pretty much you can only repress things, and you would use androgen [drug] therapy to do this." This drug therapy reduces testosterone levels, which in turn curbs sexual appetite.

How to Prove Treatment Works

The gold standard in medical studies requires a control group to go untreated to prove the value of a new drug or treatment. But studies of pedophiles cannot ethically have such a control group in the general community, out of safety concerns.

Instead, researchers look to compare the fate of inmates who by circumstance received treatment or didn't. A 2004 study, which included 109 convicted sex offenders who completed therapy and 37 who dropped out, showed "non-completers" were six times as likely to commit another sexual or violent crime, compared with those who completed therapy. But the researchers, who published in the International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology, noted that sex offenders who completed therapy were not any more likely to show empathy toward their past victims.

In the late 1980s, Berlin tracked 406 men convicted of sex crimes against children in Maryland. Five years after they were discharged, 2.9 percent of men who completed therapy had been arrested for another sex crime. Men who didn't complete therapy re-offended at a rate of 7.4 percent, according to the article, published in the American Journal of Forensic Psychiatry.

"On average, there is a 40 percent reduction of recidivism (or re-offending) by treatment in studies," Krueger said.

Crimes can go unreported, making a true study of treatment efficacy difficult. Moreover, states with civil commitment programs release former inmates at different rates.

No person who was civilly committed in the state of Minnesota since its 1994 law has been discharged, according to 2011 reports by the state Office of the Legislative Auditor. Minnesota has one of the highest per capita civil commitment rates: 575 persons committed thus far.

In Florida, where Wilson served as clinical director of the Florida Civil Commitment Center, about 40,000 incarcerated sex offenders have been screened since civil commitment legislation in 1998. Of those, Wilson said the state civilly committed 1.7 percent, or approximately 700 people. About 30 of those 700 have been released because they finished treatment.

"Surprisingly that makes Florida one of the highest releasers," Wilson said.

"People can look at risks in terms of groups — but I couldn't tell you with any degree of precision which person is more or less likely to offend again," Berlin said. On the other hand, "There's nothing about prison that erases a person's attraction, or heightens their ability to control themselves," he said.

A shawl provides comfort and warmth. A cold morning or evening can distract the body with physical discomfort and a mental obstacle from freeing the mind and clearing the consciousness of thought. The mala bead aids the enhancement of meditation by providing mental stimuli during prayer. The 108 beads count for the 108 mantras or blessings that Buddhists will chant either verbally or from within. By counting prayers one bead at a time, the individual has a focal point and can easily lose themselves in their practice, even if there are outside distractions that could hinder their meditation. This is especially true when a group is trying to trying to meditate in urban areas, or the student is new and still prone to a wondering mind. Mala beads come in different, high quality materials including sandalwood and rosewood with a traditional Tibetan knot at the end of the guru bead. A set of mala beads will last a Buddhist a lifetime.

Explore a Whole New World of Tea By Experiencing a Tea Ceremony

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 10:00 AM PST

Article by Mayoor Patel

If you consider yourself a connoisseur of fine teas, then you should really think that description over if you have yet to visit a Japanese tea ceremony. There is simply no better way to learn about the world of tea than through tea ceremonies, as they can provide you with some amazing flavors of the hot beverage with a rich tradition and historical background that you simply cannot experience anywhere else. But, do you have to go to Japan to experience an actual ceremony of tea? Not necessarily. With the increased sharing of cultural rituals and traditions during the mid to late 20th century, the good news is that you can easily have the experience of a Japanese tea ceremony in your own home.

Tea finally came to Japan in the ninth century when a Buddhist monk brought it back with him after a trip to China. From there, the passion for tea grew with a fervor never seen before in Japan, and the Japanese adopted it as one of their most popular drinks. As the passion for tea in Japan grew, so too did the wealth and prestige of those involved in the trade, and as tea began to mix with privilege, wealth, and the Zen Buddhism lifestyle - the tea ceremony was born.

As is true with other ceremonies that have an association with the Zen school of Buddhism, the ceremony using tea is meant to impart physical, spiritual and emotional insights and blessings. Used as a catalyst to build bridges with others and to gain insights into the core of one's being, this ceremony has deep significance. Often, it is considered to be one where truth in some form will be acknowledged, whether rediscovering old perceptions of truth, or uncovering a new perception of a truth for the first time. To be invited to participate in this sort of ceremony is considered an honor and also a sign of unity with the host.

Now that you know some of the basic history behind Japanese tea ceremonies, you are probably wondering where you can go to experience such a wonderful and unforgettable event. Well, as with everything! cultura lly based, your best place to start is in your nearest major metropolitan area. If your closest city has a large Japanese population, there are sure to be several places where you can experience this ceremony of tea, but even cities that lack a major Japanese influence will still have one or two places where you can participate in a ceremony. On the other hand, if you really want to see a real, professionally done tea ceremony, you really have to take a trip to Japan so you can fall in love with tea all over again thanks to the beauty and simplicity of the ceremony.

Meditating behind bars: How yoga in prisons could cut overcrowding

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 10:00 AM PST

Rachel Signer: Earlier this year the Supreme Court ruled that state of California prisons were so bad as to be inhumane, violating the 8th amendment prohibiting cruel and unusual punishment.

The reason? Overcrowding. California must to reduce its prison population by 30,000 prisoners, according to the ruling.

Overcrowding is a perennial issue in US prisons in no small part because the recidivism rate is remarkably high. In 1994 the largest study of prisoner recidivism ever done in the United States showed that, of nearly 300,000 adult prisoners who were released in 15 different states, 67.5 percent were re-arrested within three years.

Stress Reduction - 3 Steps to Greater Work Productivity and Less Stress

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 09:00 AM PST

Article by Gail Solish

Have you ever felt overwhelmed and stressed by all your responsibilities and obligations? You work full time, have a long commute to the office, have children and a partner, parents who are beginning to have health problems and volunteer commitments. Feeling stretched to the breaking point, your mood and health might be negatively impacted. Although there are many conveniences which are supposed to make life easier, if you don't use them, don't know how to use them or overuse them, it adds to the chaos you may already be experiencing.

These days many companies expect you to do more with less. You may be worried about how you will manage to do everything you're required to, particularly with the time lines you have been given. Your own beliefs about a situation can also create stress. Are you a person who likes to have things done a particular way? Do you sometimes think it is just easier to do it yourself, rather than show others how to do it? How do you react if they do it differently and it is just as effective, if not better? Do you become self critical, expecting perfection?

What about connecting with family and friends? When people are devoting an inordinate amount of time to work, other areas of their life are ignored. This leads to living a life which is out of balance which in turn creates stress. When you experience stress, eating habits generally worsen, exercise doesn't occur and fun and relaxation isn't on the agenda.

Doing everything yourself is not humanly possible, besides some of the tasks probably bore you. So what is the answer? A 3 step process consisting of elimination, automation and delegation.

Elimination involves de-cluttering both your working space and your life. Have you ever walked into someone's office and it looks like a disaster area? Papers are every where and trying to find things can take forever. Creating a filing system which works for you and getting rid of clutter is very freeing. A supportive environment helps to reduce stress and imp! roves pr oductivity.

The ability to refuse requests is another form of elimination. Learning to pay attention to what you can and cannot do is very important. When you are operating from a place of overload, being able to say "no" is a critical skill. Make space in your life for you, not just what others want from you.

Automation is the second step. There are many devices, appliances and technology which are designed to make life easier. You need to take advantage of these things. At the office turn your phone off for an hour and let your calls go to voicemail. At the same time do not look at your emails. Tell your staff not to disturb you during this time, unless it is a "life or death issue." Spend the time working on tasks which you never seem to finish and notice if you are able to accomplish more.

Maybe it is your turn to make dinner for the family but you aren't able to leave work until 6 p.m. Preset your oven to turn on or use a slow cooker. Set your watch or cell phone to remind you of particular tasks or events. Experiment with how you might automate more effectively. If you don't know how to use a particular piece of equipment, ask for help.

Last but not least is delegation. How can others help you save time and ultimately money? What are the things you are doing that you could refer to someone else, freeing you up to do more of what you love. Consider off loading more tasks to an administrative assistant, secretary or team member. If you are a small business owner perhaps it would mean hiring a book-keeper or virtual assistant to do some of the time consuming tasks while you concentrate on building your business.

Timothy Ferriss in his book The 4 Hour Workweek is a big advocate of out sourcing. He feels that it prepares you to manage your life in a whole different way with the end result, having more time to do the things you enjoy. If you have someone managing the daily activities of your business, then you can take off while knowing that you do not have to always be on c! all.

To live a happier life, you need to incorporate elimination, automation and delegation into your daily routines.

Women's Fertility Problems Linked to Higher Heart Disease Risk

Women who have a difficult time getting pregnant are at a higher risk of developing heart disease, a recent study suggests.

Researchers found women who were unable to become pregnant for at least five years, but eventually did, had a 19 percent increased risk of heart disease, compared with women who had no problems getting pregnant.

But whether such "subfertility," as it is called, is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease still remains unclear.

"We need to find out what it is about being subfertile that puts a women at excess risk of heart disease," said study co-author Dr. Nisha Parikh, a cardiologist from the University of Hawaii.

"That means looking at the causes of subfertility, and making sure that specific treatments aren't the cause of heart disease," Parikh said.

The study was published online Nov. 30 in the journal Human Reproduction.

A long road to a pregnancy

Subfertility might be caused by thyroid disease, irregular menstrual periods and obesity, studies have shown. Polycystic ovarian syndrome, a hormonal imbalance that causes problems in egg development, is also known to play a role.

Previous studies suggest that women with polycystic ovarian syndrome appear to have higher rates of high cholesterol, high blood pressure and high blood sugar or diabetes,  which are risk factors for heart disease.

"For a long time, we've wondered if conditions like polycystic syndrome may predispose women to cardiovascular risk," said Dr. C. Matthew Peterson, a fertility specialist at the University of Utah.

"We now have a study that documents heart disease-related events with subfertility," said Peterson, who was not involved with the research.

Parikh and colleagues studied nearly 863,000 Swedish women from 1983 to 2005. They examined whether subfertility was linked to heart disease-related events, such as being hospitalized or dying from a heart attack, stroke or heart failure.

Women were considered subfertile if they couldn't get pregnant for more than one year.

About 3,300 participants developed heart disease over the course of the study.

Overall, among those with no fertility problems, there were three cases of heart disease yearly per 10,000 women , whereas there were five cases per 10,000 women who were subfertile.

There was no increased risks for heart disease seen in subfertile women who became pregnant in four or less years, compared with women who had no trouble getting pregnant.

What the findings may mean

"The increased risk is actually small, but we still need to find out why there's a risk," Peterson said.

He also noted the study only focused on women, not men. "The actual risk for subfertility could have been higher," he said.

More than 7 million U.S. women of childbearing age have had trouble getting pregnant, [s1] according to a 2002 survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

But infertility isn't only a women's problem. About one-third of cases are due to men's infertility, reports the CDC.

Though the study showed an increase in risk, Parikh said she doesn't think women should be alarmed.

"This was an observational study," she said. "I don't think there's anything different that they should do."

Parikh advised women to go to their doctor and get regular checkups. "They should be concerned with heart disease like any other illness," she said.

Pass it on: Women who have trouble getting pregnant may also be at a higher risk of heart disease.

Helping Teens Reduce Stress Through Mindfulness

Source: University of California, San Diego Health Sciences

Newswise — Beginning February 4, 2012, the UC San Diego Center for Mindfulness will host a national conference for teachers, parents, therapists, and school administrators called Bridging the Hearts & Minds of Youth. The two-day conference is designed to familiarize and train attendees with the ways in which mindfulness is being taught to children and teens in a variety of settings. The goal is to teach mindfulness as a tool to positively impact children's psychological, physical and social well-being.

"Mindfulness is an effective means of contending with stress, pain and emotional distress in all areas of life," said Steven D. Hickman, PsyD, and director of the UC San Diego Center for Mindfulness. "With overlapping issues of teen suicide, childhood obesity, rampant ADHD and bullying, this is a crucial time to cultivate mindfulness in our young people so they can access their own inner resources for awareness and self-control."

More than 15 workshops and breakout sessions during the two-day conference will focus on topics such as integrating mindfulness into the classroom, mindfulness and social media, mindful parenting practice and psychotherapy, proven practices for teaching teens skills for peace and happiness, and an introduction to mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for children.

"Around the globe, mindfulness is being taught to children in settings as varied as the streets of urban America to the classrooms of Israel, and everywhere in between," said Hickman. "We are bringing these pioneers to San Diego to present their work and to learn from them as thought leaders in the fields of neuroscience, education and research."

The Bridging the Hearts & Minds Youth Conference will take place at the Catamaran Hotel in San Diego. Physician participants are eligible to receive 14.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. The course also meets the qualifications for 14.75 hours of continuing education credit for MFTs and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences, and the same number of credits for psychologists.

To register for this conference, please visit http://cme.ucsd.edu/bridging/registration.html

Benefits Of Owning A Meditation CD

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 08:00 AM PST

Article by Hassan

In our fast-paced world of today, finding time to relax and to think about everything is sometimes something very hard to do. This is why a lot of people are looking into different ways to relax so that they can get relieved from the stress of their everyday lives. One great way to do this is through meditation. If you want to start to learn meditation from the comfort of your very own home, then you should buy a meditation CD.

It is not always possible for everyone to meet up with a meditation expert. This is why these CDs were created, so that even people who didn't have time to meet an expert could still learn the relaxing and rewarding art of meditation. Meditation has the ability to make people relax and to allow them to go into a state that is beyond thinking.

Since not everyone already knows how to meditate, this is where a CD for meditation comes in. There are different ways to approach meditation through audio files on a compact disk. Usually, meditation for beginners CDs involve instructional tracks that tell people how they can meditate as well as tracks that have soothing music to help them start their meditation.

People who have tried meditation usually benefit from it greatly. They find that they are free from stress and anxiety after meditating and they can go on with the rest of the day in a better state. Also, it can help people calm down so that they can do important things like make important decisions. It can help you start the day with a bright outlook and a calm demeanor.

It is important to meditate in a place that is quiet and solitary, where you can concentrate on yourself and your thoughts and feelings rather than being bothered by the outside world. Having a room specifically for meditation is not necessary, but using a private room like a bedroom is definitely a good idea. Make sure to set a time for meditation where you're not pressured to finish quickly or your mind might wander.

You can easily find your own meditation CD in a store onlin! e or in stores near you. They come at different lengths depending on the style of meditation as well as whether or not music is included. They are not too expensive at all, and are usually quite affordable. Remember to use your CD so that you can gain a better state in your daily life.

Look at the data stupid

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 08:00 AM PST

Making up our own mind by looking at the data, in this case, the words of the Buddha, is a much better path of awakening than listening to a Zen teacher who claims to have the authority of the Buddha but whose real job is to teach his flock to follow what the Buddha never said or taught.

If we use the Dhammapada (ca. 300 B.C.) as our data base, we can certainly punch holes in the standard Zen belief that zazen (坐禅), or sitting meditation, is the crown jewel of the Buddha's teaching.  Nowhere in the Dhammapada is the importance of 'sitting meditation' mentioned.  Instead, we find phrases like, "Those, who meditating (jhâyino) entered upon this path, will be released from the bond of Mara the Evil One" (276) or "There is no meditation (natthi jhânam) for the ignorant" (372).  The importance of sitting, in other words is never mentioned.

Understanding that Zen, which is jhâna in Pali, has nothing to do with sitting on one's ass, the modern practice of the sesshin (lit. collecting mind) is not found in early Buddhism.  The sesshin generally  consists of doing zazen from one to seven days or even longer with breaks between sitting which include breaks for interviews, meals, chanting, work, etc.

Ironically, the sesshin has nothing to do with bringing the Zen adept to an actual realization of pure Mind or Suchness (tathata).  This is because more is involved in such a difficult undertaking.  Zazen cannot reach Mind because Mind is transcendent even though it animates all sentient beings even when they are doing a sesshin!  Unfortunately, zazen and the sesshin serve more to hide what Buddhism is really about which is seeing Mind thus attaining liberation.

The importance of realizing Mind cannot be overstated in Buddhism and in the literature of traditional Zen.  In the Dhammapada we read:

"Mind to immateriality has gone (vi-sankhara-gatam cittam), desire's end is accomplished" (157).

And,

"Those who can master (samyamissanti) the mind (cittam), which strays, wandering alone, incorporeal, living enclosed (guhâsayam)—they will be liberated (mokkhanti) from the bond of Mara" (37).

From the traditional literature of Zen we read what Zen master Huang-po says about Mind.

"This Mind is always intrinsically round and bright, illuminating everywhere.  People of the world don't know it, and just recognize perception and cognition as Mind."

Improve Your Mind, Improve Your Life

An empowered mind is more powerful than any marketing strategy, or coaching that you may receive from anyone. An empowered mind can deliver the circumstances, and the opportunities to create wealth and well-being on a scale never before thought possible.

Maximizing the minds ability to perform brings such clarity of thought and an intuition as sharp as a knife. Self-trust is heightened and focus becomes crystal clear enabling you to act upon your intuition immediately, which is known as 'speed of implementation'. Almost every successful entrepreneur credits their success to the fact that they very often acted immediately upon their intuition.

Improving your mind also means increased concentration, greater awareness, enhanced memory and an improved sense of self. Additionally, increased overall well-being is achieved with an improved mindset, because scientifically speaking the body follows the mind.

Those of us who see the importance of improving the mind as it relates to success in every area of our lives, can tap into immense power by starting with a few exercises for sharpening the mind.

Many people find meditation to be mysterious or difficult, but investing in a meditation program like Centerpointe Research Holosync that allows you to meditate effortlessly is one of the best things you can do for yourself when it comes to improving your mind.

Crack Open A Book

If you go long periods of time without reading a book, especially a book that can enhance your knowledge base or engage critical thinking then it is equivalent to going long periods of time without exercising your body. Both are detrimental! This partial list of excellent books can get you started in the right direction:

Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life - Wayne Dyer

Think and Grow Rich ! - Napole on Hill

Tao Te Ching - Lao Tzu

The Alchemist - Paulo Coelho

Tease Yourself

Regularly indulge in brain teasers, crosswords, concentration card games and puzzles. This type of activity stimulates the brain function and actually creates new neural pathways which expand the brain capacity. It's good news to know that doing fun things can actually contribute to maximizing the mind! Have fun, relax and don't take yourself so seriously. Life is supposed to be FUN!

Our quest for success is for one thing and one thing only…. happiness! We think that we will be HAPPY if we have more money, more freedom, a bigger house, a fancier car, luxurious vacations, fame, or whatever it is that you desire to have…..

…..we all want one thing… to be happy.

This is not hypnosis, it is not brain washing, I am simply going to instruct you in how properly to allow yourself to relax. Relaxation is not simply important for your physical self, it will positively affect your spirit, your mind, your body and your overall well being. Those unable to relax, often suffer from an inability to focus their concentration. This exercise will allow you to do this. To be effective, this exercise will require you to have no direct distractions. Nothing that will divide your attention in any fashion, you will want to find a chair or couch that is comfortable. Turn off the television or radio, turn down the lights and relax. This is not a 'screamer' - it is an actual relaxation exercise....

The History of Karate

Zen Buddhism
by araki

Article by tianxiangyu01@gmail.com

Karate is a Japanese word meaning "empty hands" which indicates that Karate is a kind of martial art that does not require weapons other than the parts of the body. Originally, it was a method of unarmed self-defense developed in the Okinawan Islands from various techniques introduced from mainland China, as well as local innovations. In truth, the origins of karate appear to be somewhat obscure and little is known about the early development of karate until it appeared in Okinawa.Although its origin is obscure, a popular legend prevails that the evolution of karate began over a thousand years ago, possibly as early as the 5th BC when Bodhidharma arrived in Shaolin-si in China from India and taught Zen Buddhism. He also introduced a systematized set of exercises designed to strengthen the mind and body. This set of exercises allegedly marked the beginning of the Shaolin style of temple boxing. Bodhidharma's teachings later became the basis for the majority of Chinese martial arts. However, the question of his contributions to the martial arts and to Zen Buddhism and even of his very existence has been a matter of controversy among historians and martial arts scholars for many years.

Karate was originally known as 'Kenpo', meaning 'First Law'. From China it crossed over to Okinawa, where known as 'Te', which consisted mostly of hand movements. In 1923 the Okinawans altered the Chinese character to a Japanese character. Thus, the meaning changed from 'hands of China' to 'empty hand'. This transition assuredly lea to a deeper meaning to the art in which the spiritual overcame the physical.

Te continued to develop over the years, primarily in three Okinawan cities: Shuri, Naha and Tomari. Each of these towns was a center to a different sect of society: kings and nobles, merchants and business people, and farmers and fishermen, respectively. For this reason, different forms of self-defense developed within each city and subsequently became known as Shuri-te, Naha-te and Tomari-te. Collecti! vely the y were called Okinawa-Te or Tode, 'Chinese hand'. Gradually, karate was divided into two main groups: Shorin-ryu which developed around Shuri and Tomari and Shorei-ryu which came from the Naha area. It is important to note, however, that the towns of Shuri, Tomari, and Naha are only a few miles apart, and that the differences between their arts were essentially ones of emphasis, not of kind. Beneath these surface differences, both the methods and aims of all Okinawan karate are the same.Shorin-ryu was quick and linear with natural breathing while Shorei-ryu emphasized steady, rooted movements with breathing in synchrony with each movement. The Chinese character Tode could also be pronounced 'kara', thus the name Te was replaced with kara te - jutsu or 'Chinese hand art'' by the Okinawan Masters. This was later changed to karate-do by Gichin Funakoshi who adopted an alternate meaning for the Chinese character for kara, 'empty'. From this point on the term karate came to mean 'empty hand'. The Do in karate-do means 'way' or 'path', and is indicative of the discipline and philosophy of karate with moral and spiritual connotations

In the last seven decades, the techniques have been modified into distinct Japanese styles. Today there are four main styles of karate-do in Japan: Goju-ryu, Shito-ryu, Shotokan, and Wado-ryu:Many. These styles are currently taught in the world and are often modified into styles more suitable to their own methods of self defense. Thus the art of karate is constantly undergoing improvement and revision.

In its course of development, Karate has gradually come into prominence as a sport. In 1916, two experts form Okinawa, Kenwa Mabuni and Gigen Funakoshi introduced their techniques to Japan aiming at promoting Karate as a sport throughout Japan. As a sport, Karate offers many different levels and types of competition. A typical tournament would include demonstrations of breaking, weapons use, self defense techniques, tradition and open forms and the most exciting competitio! n, sparr ing. Competitive tournaments bring together many different styles of Karate.

Mindful Eating

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 02:00 AM PST

Article by Michael Andreula

The second path to personal power over food is Mindful Eating.

Mindfulness is simply the moment-by-moment awareness of life. But it's not always so simple. We so easily get caught up in our own thoughts and self-talk that we are scarcely aware of life as it passes us by. This is very true of our eating. We eat meal after meal, snack after snack, barely aware of what we're eating and how much we're consuming. Mindful eating: is about being conscious of why you are eating. Are you hungry? Are you tired? Are you bored? There is no menu or recipes to follow. It's about learning HOW and WHY you eat, and less about WHAT you eat. When you are so closely in touch with what is going on inside, you know the exact moment you are satisfied rather than stuffed or starving. To understand the why, what, when and how we eat, we have to be compassionate and nonjudgmental. This allows us to take a closer look at our behavior. Our fast-food culture is one where meals have become yet another task we squeeze in during the day. It is all too common to hear of people grabbing breakfast on the run or attending a lunch meeting, where business is front and center and food is merely the bait to get people there.Adults in the United States devote an average of 1 hour and 12 minutes per day to eating, yet spend between 2½ and 3 hours per day watching television. Our kids are rushed too. Studies have shown that school lunch periods provide an average of 7 to 11 minutes for students to consume their lunch.

Mindfulness is a return to paying attention to life. When we pay attention to our food---really pay attention---we begin to notice all sorts of wonderful aspects of the food, and we become aware of how much we're putting into our bodies.

The Effects of Mindful EatingIt may come as a big surprise to learn that "mindless" eating, or eating without awareness, can have negative health consequences. Scientists are beginning to evaluate and better understand the complex role of the mind-body connection in ea! ting beh avior. It turns out that when our mind is tuned out during mealtime, the digestive process may be 30% to 40% less effective. This can contribute to digestive distress, such as gas, bloating and bowel irregularities.Gas and bloating aside, overeating and obesity are perhaps the most significant health problems caused, at least in part, by mindless eating. The mind-body connection plays a pivotal role in our ability to accurately assess hunger and fullness. While the precise mechanisms of hunger and fullness are not completely understood, we do know that the brain and central nervous system receive signals from the body when food is desired or needed. These signals can be caused by many triggers, including psychological states such as our mood. Once eating is under way, the brain has a key role to send out a signal when fullness is approaching. If the mind is "multi-tasking" during eating, critical signals that regulate food intake may not be received by the brain. If the brain does not receive certain messages that occur during eating, such as sensation of taste and satisfaction, it may fail to register the event as "eating". This scenario can lead to the brain's continuing to send out additional signals of hunger, increasing the risk of overeating.

How to Practice Eating MindfullyEating mindfully means eating with awareness. Not awareness of what foods are on your plate, but rather awareness of the experience of eating. Mindful eating is being present, moment by moment, for each sensation that happens during eating, such as chewing, tasting and swallowing. If you've ever practiced mindfulness in any way, (such as meditation, relaxation or breathing exercises) you are familiar with how easily our minds wander. The same happens when we eat. When you begin to practice mindful eating, one important thing to remember is not to judge yourself when you notice your mind drifting off the experience of eating. Instead, just keep returning to the awareness of that taste, chew, bite or swallow. If this concept ! is new, try the following exercise.Do this exercise with a friend. You will need one small slice of an apple for each person. One person reads the instructions listed below while the other person completes the exercise.1. Take one bite of an apple slice and then close your eyes. Do not begin chewing yet. 2. Try not to pay attention to the ideas running through your mind, just focus on the apple. Notice anything that comes to mind about taste, texture, temperature and sensation going on in your mouth. 3. Begin chewing now. Chew slowly, just noticing what it feels like. It's normal that your mind will want to wander off. If you notice you're paying more attention to your thinking than to the chewing, just let go of the thought for the moment and come back to the chewing. Notice each tiny movement of your jaw. 4. In these moments you may find yourself wanting to swallow the apple. See if you can stay present and notice the subtle transition from chewing to swallowing. 5. As you prepare to swallow the apple, try to follow it moving toward the back of your tongue and into your throat. Swallow the apple, following it until you can no longer feel any sensation of the food remaining. 6. Take a deep breath and exhale. You may find it interesting to talk with your partner about your experience. What did you notice while chewing? Why did you swallow? Was the food no longer tasty? Did it dissolve?
