Successful performance of meditation is tough to attain on one's own, and it can easily be facilitated with outside sources like music, Kundalini music if you're doing yoga in conjunction with meditation, or brainwave entrainment. Moreover, brainwave entrainment results in the fixed state required for some individuals which wish to feel like they're getting locked into something instead of just hovering free by themselves in an attempt at meditative state. It provides a shell of legitimacy and control to the entire hazy practice of meditating.

Meditating music is songs that boosts along the way of reaching a meditative state, and it shouldn't be used as an alternative for meditation unless it's for aesthetic purposes, i.e., listening pleasure. Kundalini music is a sub-specialty of meditating music which is based on the Kundalini system of yoga. Kundalini yoga is primarily focused on the base of residual sexual energy at the bottom of the spinal column. Kundalini music can assist in the whole process of releasing this energy, uncoiling your body, and aid in the process of Kundalini yoga. Brainwave entrainment can be used along with either of these 2 techniques, Kundalini yoga or meditation.

The purpose of brainwave entrainment is to get the brainwaves to match some external stimulus in a manner that ensures that the brain wave mirrors the stimulus from the external device. Specialised software, musical instruments, and wavelengths are used to produce a stimulus which can act like a brainwave in the user's mind. Such stimulation can easily be reached through the aural sensation, visual sensation, or through electromagnetic radiation. Music and songs can also be employed in the assistance of meditating. Meditating music and songs, the technique of creating it, can actually develop a sense of meditating. Numerous tribes throughout the world engage in dances and traditions during which they engage in meditation music, and this music in fact generates a feeling of meditating in a circuito! us patte rn of meditating music. It's both something that can easily be heard create a more meditative state, and it's something that can be played that can put one in a condition of meditating, through chanting, strumming, drumming, and singing.

Meditation music is often placed in the categories of world fusion, new age, and spiritual feelings, and it comes from San Francisco, California sometimes in a greater percentage than other cities. This is because of California's hippie subculture and the significant way of life of Buddhism carried over from Japan.

The word 'Yoga' comes from ancient Indian philosophy, it literally means union, and in this context refers to the union of the individual's soul with the universal. Yoga fitness is the ultimate fitness attained through the practice of Yoga.

Yoga is the art of meditation aimed at training a human body and soul consciously for a state of perfect spiritual insight, harmony and tranquility. Yoga fitness is basically achieved through the three paths- the path of actions, knowledge and devotion. Though yoga is always popularly recognized with fitness and health concerns, the art of Yoga hardly leaves any aspect of human health untouched! Be it health, weight loss, devotion, concentration, spiritual enlightenment, ego-shedding or beauty, yoga is effective in each of them. Many famous personalities in the health and beauty industry swear on the names of Yoga fitness.

Mind Management Made Easy

Article by Willie Horton

Copyright (c) 2011 Willie Horton

Every week, a couple of thousand people around the world receive my free Personal Development Ezine. This week, in amongst the videos and articles, my recommended book was Anthony de Mello's 'Awareness' - a small book with a huge message. De Mello pulled no punches when it came to explaining and exploring the utter craziness of so-called normal people. As he explains quite simply, normal people are in a trance - sleepwalking their way through life - and, in the process, they miss the very life that they spend their lives searching for! And, to emphasize that point, I've just counted to number of times he uses the phrase 'Wake Up' in his first excerpt - seven times!!

I have recently been criticized for calling my latest self-help book 'Normal Crazy People' - some reviewers have told me that putting the words 'normal' and 'crazy' together like that is simply wrong. However, all you have to do is look around you (and possibly take a long hard look at your own behaviour) to realize that our behaviour is off the wall. Tony de Mello arrived at the same place that many psychologists have done over the last seventy years. The scientific discipline of psychology has probably never once published a research paper using the word 'crazy' but, if you cast your eye over the key areas of research back to the 1930s, you will inevitably come to the conclusion that normal people are, indeed, crazy. Why? Because research from very many different psychological perspectives - behavioural, social, neurological, cognitive and developmental - all confirms the same conclusion: that, as adults, our minds control us, not the other way around. As far as I'm concerned, that's are sure a definition of madness as you will ever come across.

The normal mind does not focus on the here and now - the time and place that you are! The normal mind's cognitive functions ensure that you pay little or no attention to the here and now - the time and place that you've got to turn up to to! get any thing worth talking about from your life. The normal mind's capabilities that allow us to repeatedly perform routine functions mindlessly result in us doing pretty much everything mindlessly. And, all the while, the normal subconscious mind is indulging in its obsession with the key events of our formative years - the conditioning that has made us who we think we are. Quite obviously, this way of using your mind simply leads to what de Mello describes as the 'nightmare' than the normal mind sleepwalks through.

The obvious conclusion is that, in order to get anything much out of life, you're going to have to start taking control of your mind. You're going to have to start managing how your mind focuses and, in the process, ensure that your mind focuses on the key things that you need to get done to get you to where you want to be in life.

Managing your mind is no big deal. It doesn't require that you transform your way of thinking. All that is required is that you start to re-train your mind to focus on the present moment - the only place and time where you can actually do what needs to be done to the very best of your ability. And, even though your adult mind is hard-wired to not pay attention to the here and now, retraining your mind to do just that couldn't be simpler. Like all great journeys, you start with the first steps - you start small. You deliberately decide to use some of your mundane, repetitive, routine chores as a training ground for your mind. You deliberately decide that, in doing these chores, you will pay an extra-ordinary amount of attention to what you're doing. After all, that's how we train ourselves to live our ordinary lives extra-ordinarily.

What am I talking about? Well, think of three or four things that you're going to have to do today. Like eating your dinner, like shaving, brushing your teeth or dressing yourself. The simplest way to pay an extra-ordinary amount of attention to things as mundane as these is to do them differently. In this way you involve! more of your mind in the task in hand - you relearn how to focus. Not just that, you experience the difference between being focused and sleepwalking. When you start experiencing the difference in small everyday things, you start developing the kind of mental focus that is a prerequisite to for you to get the very best out of life.

Attention and focus are all important. Focus is the hallmark of all extra-ordinarily successful people. Little wonder really - because neuro-psychology tells us that your ability to be happy and successful depends on your ability to pay attention.

12 Tips For Beating the Social Overeating Habit

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 09:00 AM PST

Post written by Leo Babauta.

While I've learned to eat much healthier over the last six or seven years, one of my biggest challenges has been overeating on social occasions.

There are holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, but there are many more: my kids' birthday parties, going out to dinner with my wife Eva, get-togethers with friends, social gatherings of business colleagues, drinking with best friends.

I've always tended to overeat, because:

  1. I am distracted by conversation and so I eat mindlessly; and
  2. unlike at home, where I've created a healthy eating environment, I tend to be surrounded at these occasions by boatloads of tempting but unhealthy foods.

I've gotten better recently, though, and have been teaching myself healthier habits.

My main habit is simple on the surface: mindful eating.

Mindful eating is simply being aware of your eating, of your body's actual hunger signals as opposed to your brain saying "eat all that sugar and fried stuff!", of your urges to eat more when you're not hungry, of your snacking even when your stomach isn't asking for more.

Mindful eating is eating slowly, fully tasting the food, appreciating every bite, being conscious of what you're putting into your body, savoring but not overdoing.

Mindful eating, though, can be tough to do when you are distracted by talking to friends and family. So I asked readers (on Google+) to share their tips for beating the social overeating habit. You came up with some great ones.

I share these tips in hopes that you'll find use for them during these holidays, and beyond.

  1. Constant awareness of bodily feedback and sensation. Ask yourself, "Am I hungry? Do I need more? Etc." Being aware of your body's hunger signals is a skill that has been overridden by years of overeating due to food reward properties like sugar, salt, fat, etc., but it's a skill that can be relearned with practice. (from Brian Johnson)
  2. Don't go to an event hungry. Eat something healthy and at least somewhat filling before you go. This way you're less likely to mindlessly snack. This was one of the most popular tips submitted by readers, including Cyndi Pauwels, Cameron Chapman and many others.
  3. Eat until you're 80 percent full. This is a cultural habit that the Okinawans have, and it famously helps them stay healthy well into old age. (from Leo)
  4. Don't linger near the food table. Make a conscious choice to eat whatever you want to eat, but don't eat just because other people are eating or because it's convenient. (from Cameron Chapman)
  5. Actually engage socially with someone. If your mouth is talking, it can't eat. (from Kenneth Cummins)
  6. At a standing event, keep one hand in your pocket, and the other holding a glass of water. Unless it's a high-end, Roman-esque event with personal serving maidens, you can't eat what you can't pick up. (from Kenneth Cummins)
  7. Cheat without guilt. For one or two occasions a year, allow yourself to eat as much as you want, which doesn't necessarily mean to stuff yourself, but to eat without thinking too much about consequences. Two big meals on Christmas or similar occasions don't spoil a year-long habit of healthy eating. Don`t overanalyze, just enjoy, without any bad conscience. (from Alessandro Shobeazzo)
  8. Plan behavior beforehand, and plan it specifically. If going to a place of feasting (holiday, buffet, free lunch, etc), make a specific plan for what you will allow yourself to do. For example, plan to eat a good portion of protein, one starch, and lots of green vegetables. With your plan, you can then acknowledge the urge to overeat, but not give in. Make sure to make a specific plan BEFORE the event and NOT on an empty stomach. (from Jonathan Pishner)
  9. Place your two palms together. Whatever fits in between is the approximate size of your stomach. Project that on to your plate and put only this much food on it. (from Ivan Staroversky)
  10. Drink lots of water and eat s-l-o-w-l-y. Eating slowly allows you time to hear the faint but clear 'enough! enough!' cries coming from the belly. (from maggie dodson and Sujit Kumar Chakrabarti)
  11. Get over the idea of finishing your plate and be stubborn about stopping when you're full. Most people are conditioned from childhood to finish everything on their plate so will keep eating when full. Be warned though that other people will sometimes get upset at you for not eating everything. Stick to 'it was great but I can't fit anymore in' until they move on. (from Rhiiannon Dwyer)
  12. Try to count up to 15 chews per each mouthful. That will really slow you down. (from Hudson Gardner)

An Overview of Holistic Spirituality

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 07:00 AM PST

Article by Rachel Saxon

An Overview of Holistic SpiritualityThe general misconception in the past was that religions of the world all off which are offshoots of spirituality was viewed either as good or bad. Each of the religions felt that it was it was the only good and right spiritual path to follow while other religions were bad and wrong spiritual paths to follow. If not how do we explain the crusades, countless jihads and many more acts of violence perpetrated by the religions of the world. However, there is now a general re-awakening in the society as more and more people beginning to grasp the idealness of holistic spirituality in this confused world. Although, some agitators against the movement maintains that it is a movement that is set out to rubbish the existence of the church and lead people into a conscious awareness of their spirituality without a define direction, the view is totally biased and is not an objective criticism for the reverse as the case because holistic spirituality is an all-encompassing movement that combines the good and sound teaching of the church with , the beliefs and practices of eastern religions as well as the tribal beliefs of Africa among other things. The very essence of holistic spirituality is total spirituality and it subsumes the spirituality of the different kind of religion in the world. The core of the movement is spiritual diversity because it recognizes the paramount principle that we are all spirit beings and that the individual spirit that will possess gets it expression in a uniquely different way. Thus, the spirit is allowed to operate in its purest form and there are no human restrictions on what goes and what is not acceptable as far as the manifestation of the individual spirit is concerned. The concept of holistic spirituality places utmost importance on the spirit of man finding peace and harmony in its environment through a way that is most convenient for him to achieve the feat. The most convenient way may be dance, prayer, meditation, or even a close observa! tion of nature. The best part is that the spirit man enjoys an unparallel level of freedom not found in conventional religions to achieve spiritual maturity. Finally, holistic spirituality is convicted of the fact that there exists a connection between the body of man and his spirit, and that one cannot be made perfect or complete without the other. This is the basic framework for holistic wellness and healing and it strives to make man a total man. However, this is a completely virtually non- existence concept in the conventional religions of the world. And above all the existence of God is believe, and you have the freedom to call him by whatever name you choose, but there is a supreme being that supersedes and transcends the entire universe.

Is Stress Keeping You Up At Night?

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 06:00 AM PST

Article by Joyce Dillon, R.N., M.N.

What keeps Americans awake at night? While for some it may have been too much pizza, for most business people today, especially entrepreneurs, managers, and executives, it's stress. There's just too much to do, and not enough time to do it. The result of the hyped-up business climate we live in today is a population that's dependent on medication and drugs to sleep and get through the day. These only serve to increase the devastating effects of stress on our lives.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 60% to 70% of all disease and illness is stress-related. Add to that the fact that an estimated 75% to 90% of visits to physicians are stress-related, and there's good reason the drug companies are having a field day. This really isn't necessary. There is so much good information and knowledge about stress and stress reduction to get all stressed out over stress!

These are the top nine stress busters that I teach all my clients which help them dramatically reduce stress and improve the quality of their sleep.

1. Mindful Awareness of Thoughts and Beliefs - Become aware of what you are thinking and feeling during the day. Are your thoughts negative, fearful or limiting? Do you worry about everything: money, health, and relationships? If you are thinking negative thoughts, you are attracting into your life negative people and unhelpful situations. You are doing the very thing you do not want to do. Try to "let go" of the thought and replace it with a positive belief or image.2. Visualization - Clinical evidence shows that physical changes clearly happen when people practice imagery regularly. Creating a mental image in your mind is a very powerful practice to use in the morning when you get up and at night before you go to sleep. Start by relaxing with music or in silence and create an image of a peaceful place. Then envision in your mind what you want to happen. "I am totally relaxed, I will wake-up with the solution to my problem, I will sleep soundly all! night." If you practice this technique frequently, you can instill these messages into your subconscious mind and activate the relaxation response anytime you want.3. Meditation - Mediating before bedtime for ten to twenty minutes can be very helpful for reducing stress and promoting sounder sleep.Sit quietly in a comfortable chair, close your eyes and breathe deeply. Focus on your breath; relax your chest and body. When your mind wanders and you find yourself lost in other thoughts, let the emotion or thoughts go and return your focus to your breathing. This practice works quickly to reduce stress and rebalance your body. Continue for at least ten minutes or until you feel drowsy.

4.Purchase The Best Of Stress Management Kit -A ten-week multimedia course to help reduce stress, anxiety, promote relaxation, improve mood, lower blood pressure and much more. This course is based on the Center for Mind-Body Medicine's world-renowned professional training program. It features James Gordon, Joan Borysenko, and other leading experts in mind-body relaxation and stress-reduction techniques.

5. Exercise, Exercise, ExerciseIt's a great way to release tension and fortify ourselves against the physical effects of stress. Engage in aerobic activity; take a walk, run or swim. Try a new, fun exercise such as NIA, belly-dancing or boxing. Exercising in the evening, however can be counter-productive, particularly if the exercise is vigorous.

6. Laugher and FunLaughter is one of the healthiest antidotes to stress. Take yourself lightly and your work seriously. When we laugh or even smile, blood flow to the brain is increased, endorphins are released, and levels of stress hormones drop. Start to notice how often you smile. People who experience joy, fun and laughter sleep well.

7. Diaphragmatic Breathing - The following exercises make use of the breath and can enhance the ability to fall asleep due to their calming effect.Put one hand on your abdomen and close your eyes. Take a deep breath in through your ! nose and expel it slowly and completely through your mouth. You will feel your belly flatten. Exhale fully, drawing in your abdomen. At the end of each third exhalation, hold your breath for as long as you can. Then repeat the process two or three times, or until you feel sleepy.

8. Take Action - Rather than worry, re-live the situation over and over or spend sleepless nights thinking about the consequences, take some action to move the issue forward. Talk to a friend, get a therapist, journal... just do something. Procrastination weakens productivity, compounds your anxiety and causes the stressful side-effects of guilt, anger and low self-esteem.

9. Get Serious- Hire a coach who specializes in stress reduction and mind-body coaching. Develop a blueprint for lifestyle change, set goals, have accountability and make the health lifestyle changes you have always wanted.

Natural Dye Techniques By Buddhist Monks

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 04:00 AM PST

Article by Pat Munro

Have you ever wondered why the robes worn by the Buddhist monk's were yellow or orange? How did they choose and dye the materials they have? Have you ever wanted to dye cloth similar to the Buddhist ideal?

The Man, who would become Buddha, was born a son of the Shakya clan and grew to manhood in an entitled and sheltered life during the 6th century BCE in India. Early encounters with sickness, old age and death shattered his complacency and made him question the privileged experiences and assumptions of his life. He renounced home and family in order to devote himself to answering the questions of suffering and, as was the custom, traded his fine clothing away for that of a mendicant seeker.

Legend dictates the original robe used by Buddha was actually made from many scraps of cloth sewn together. It was sewn into the pattern of the paddy fields of Magadha in the Northern part of India. This has changed over the years, today's Buddhist disciples must wear the robe, always look neat and well covered. According to Buddhist's regulations set down in the monk's book of discipline, their robes must be naturally dyed and made. There should be no whites or bright colors, but there is no specific color choice. Early Buddhist religious authorities have interpreted the instructions that the robe, when made, should be dyed a color between yellow and red. Every Buddhist sect around the world has different colored robes due to the different indigenous plants used to dye them. For example, the dull yellow color often used on the streets of Bangkok, and elsewhere in Thailand, are used by the Buddhist monks of Thailand because it is a tone achieved from the heartwood of the indigenous Jack-fruit tree.

To achieve any natural Buddhist inspired color, you would first prepare the robe placing it in a vat of hot or cold water with a solution made from a concoction of cow dung, red earth, or selected plant parts i.e.: root, bark, wood, flowers.

- To achieve a dull yellow, the jack-wood tree is ! cut into slices and boiled in water until the solution is dark brown in color. The wetted robe is then placed in the second solution, and left there until the desired 'dirty' yellow pigment is achieved.

- To achieve a warm orange, you would use the Sindurey plant of Nepal, or roucou and annatto seeds.

- Hues of reds are achieved with yellow raspberry plants or rambai wood, and annatto seeds.

It is important to note, these plant origins may be difficult to find in our Western world. Many of the plants we in North America can use are found as weeds. These weeds can be found anywhere, along roadways, fields, woods and forests. It is best to bring a plant reference guide to find the proper plant for the dye color required.

- Yellows: Scotch broom, saffron and safflower.- Yellow-tan: Agrimony, goldenrod and sumac- Yellow-gold: Smartweed, privet, marigold and St. John's wort- Greenish-yellow: Lily of the valley and nettle- Tans: Lichen- Dark brown: Black walnut- Orange: Black oak, onion- Gray: Blackberry and butternut hulls

Your mind is like a magnet, which is something you may not have known. Your mind will attract things that it sees and thinks. The law of attraction deals with this mind power.

Believing something will happen with such a strong conviction that is does end up happening is the basis of the law of attraction. When you think, feel and see yourself with the best life then you can have it. It takes practice, but with a persistent attitude you can have success. It is amazing just how powerful the mind really is.

We all have mind power that we just do not realize. In fact, research has proven that we only use about 10% of our brain power. What a waste! We seem to only stick to the simple things and bypass the rest.

And that may be why we feel like we're having a lot of trouble. We may think negatively because we don't believe that what we want to have can actually be ours. So what that means is that we continue to attract more negative things instead of more positive things. However, if you take a look at it honestly, you'll know that the life you have in front of you is the one you've thought about and attracted to you.

Your mind is the filter through which you see the real world; what you perceive and make yourself aware of is what you act upon. If you make your attitude positive, you'll notice more positive outcomes, and you can use your subconscious mind power to draw more beneficial results to you.

If you think about something that you want in life, then you can exert your subconscious mind power into making it happen. If you believe the worst is going to happen, if often does.

If you want to increase your mind power then there are some things that you can do. Visualization is one of those things. Visualization is a powerful technique that allows you to exercise your mind power. It can help you to gain more power, too.

Visualization is done by sitting quietly and using your mind to imagine all of the things you would like to have in your world. Let your mind ! create p icture images of those things. Anyone can use the visualization technique to bring these desires into their subconscious mind.

However, the drawback to this is that you have to think positive in order to have positive things come to you. Therefore, it's best to 'practice' the way that you want to think and live before you actually try to do this.

To help you, write everything on a piece of paper, like a story. You should consider your goals as they can guide you. You can shape your visions around your goals. By writing things down you will be less likely to forget them. Write and visualize a few times a day so it starts to manifest as reality in your mind.

You can also use affirmations to increase your mind power. Affirmations are simply little, encouraging positive sayings that you can save yourself throughout the day. It can be about anything. For example, if you want to lose 10 pounds, you can say something to the effect of, 'I'm losing the extra weight effortlessly and easily.' As you continue to say this, you may notice that truly, the weight is actually coming off pretty easily. It'll just naturally start to happen.

Keep telling yourself those positive things, and everything will just naturally start to come to you. It doesn't matter if you are not used to it at first, anything done consecutively for 28 days automatically becomes a habit.

Another thing that you can do to help develop more mind power is through brainwave entertainment. What this is, is synchronizing your brainwaves through audio technology. The brain naturally can do several things. One of those things is the ability to heal itself. Through brainwave entertainment you can enhance this ability.

This process also improves memory and enhances natural psychic powers. This method is advanced but it can do amazing things.

Another means of expanding your mind power is through hypnosis. It reduces tension and resistance allowing access to your subconscious mind. Many people have used hypnosis to qui! t smokin g because it works. The process simply involves repeated sessions where the person sits quietly relaxing and listening to the hypnotist tell them over and over that they want to quit smoking, that they do not have the urge to smoke, they want to and can quit and they do.

They are convinced in their subconscious mind that they can quit and so they do.

In the end it comes down to the fact that everyone has this kind of potential. The mind is often the overlooked part of our society. Even though this is unfortunate, it's also important that you've made it to this point. The truth is we can't help anyone who continues to believe they can't be helped. However, since you're taking the initiative to get started, it's time to start your first test.

How much mind power do you have inside of you?

Meditation in India

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 02:00 AM PST

Article by Reshma86

Meditation in India owes its root to the spiritual teaching and practice of Patanjali who, in the Mauryan period, described 196 sutras on yoga. But meditation in India as it stands now has been shaped by the influences of the Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism as well as modern philosophies in the area of health and spirituality. Yoga and meditation in India is practiced for different health and medical benefits apart from spiritual upliftment. In fact, yoga tourism as a segment of the travel industry is growing popular with every passing day and if you go for yoga tours in Haridwar, Rishikesh or Varanasi , your vacation will bring you an experience you had never known before.Wisdom through YOG As in other countries, the concept of meditation in India firmly rests on the belief that yoga brings knowledge, wisdom and enlightenment. The enlightenment Buddha talked about does not denote any practical knowledge but it is rather a profound perception, a realization of the 'yog' between the individual soul and the divine being which we know by the name of God. Spirituality as opposed to religion comes from understanding that the union of the Atman and Paramatman is necessary for achieving a state of bliss and happiness. Meditation in India combines interrupted training of the mental and physical faculties and deep concentration on the spirit of the universe. Through practice when you feel that your mental and physical impulses are in perfect harmony with the eternal spirit, you feel happy because the world of the sense no longer concerns you.It might be very difficult to gauge the concepts of Atman, Jivatman, Paramatman, Brahma, Shiva and Shakti which underlie the philosophy of this ancient practice but what you can understand and achieve is the synchronization of body, mind and soul which comes through meditation. Meditation in India has taken this synchronization as the basic object, though the way of observation and understanding is varied and multi-faceted.However, the difference in practice is not a co! ntempora ry phenomenon. Yoga even in the ancient times had its different disciplines which correspond to the current differences in practice in some way or the other.Different types of yogaYoga and meditation in India, as it is practiced at present, is in some conformity with the ancient traditional classifications. Though there are various types of yoga, the most prominent ones are Jnana Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Karma Yoga and Raj Yoga. The other types of yoga practiced in the country include Kundalini Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Purna Yoga, Tantric Yoga etc.Jnana Yoga : 'Jnana' means knowledge in Sanskrit, and this discipline of yoga emphasizes on reaching Truth by following the path of knowledge. Certain institutes offering course on meditation in India teaches learners how to use mantras and analytical inquiry to gain awareness about the self.Bhakti Yoga : This discipline of meditation in the country teaches an individual to devote himself or herself to God or the divine being. It is through meditation that they surrender to God and experience the Sublime spirit that governs our activity.Karma Yoga : By practicing Karma Yoga, a learner believes that happiness comes from compassionate behavior towards others in our daily life.Kundalini Yoga : This yoga form seeks to activate and liberate the cosmic energy that lies coiled within every individual.Meditation in India will bring you an opportunity to take up a specialized course to overcome your specific physical and mental and spiritual issues.

Request any passer-by on any road to explain shamanism and the consequence will probably be blank stares. Most folks are surprised to find out that shamanism is not a religion but the oldest spiritual and dilemma-fixing engineering on the planet. Even far more shocking is the discovery that it really is the precursor to most major planet religions, which includes the Judaeo-Christian and Buddhist traditions, and that it has been practised on each and every inhabited continent on earth for at least forty,000 years and probably really a lot more time. Historically, shamanism was a substantial survival device of prehistoric human beings. Our hunter-gatherer forbears adorned the stone partitions of caves and cliffs close to the earth with carved and painted photographs drawn straight from shamanic expertise. We no longer reside in caves or in very little communities whose members are all identified to us. Most of us stay far longer, more healthy lives than our historical ancestors, but our brains, that portion of us capable of fearing the darkish and asking for aid from things unseen, hasn't altered in nearly a quarter of a million years. What manufactured the unsure lives of prehistoric men and women less complicated still performs nowadays due to the fact, even though the planet may possibly have modified, essentially we have not.Ask what a shaman is and the issue might evoke a handful of words about Native American 'medicine men' or perhaps the term 'witchdoctor'. In simple fact, what a shaman is and does is merely explained. In the Siberian Tungus language which made the term, 'shaman' means 'the 1 who sees' and refers to a man or woman capable of producing a 'journey' to alternate realities although in an altered state of consciousness in order to meet and function with spirit helpers. What the shaman 'sees', what she realises, throughout this knowledge of meeting spirits is that there is no separation in between nearly anything that is: no separation in between me composing and you studying the! se phras es, amongst a puppy and cat, between life and dying, between this apparently content actuality and the non-materials realities of the spirit worlds. This thought of 'oneness' is frequent currency in modern culture and more and more presented credence by selected quantum physicists operating with sub atomic concept, though of program it is a predominantly bodily, fairly than a spiritual, oneness that this sort of scientists are attempting to describe. Nevertheless, exactly where most of us can only consider about the idea of 'oneness', shaman's actually dwell it by way of the knowledge of the shamanic 'journey' and direct, individual interaction with spirit.Described as a 'breakthrough in plane', in physiological terms the journey starts as the shaman redirects the principal cognitive approach from the left cerebral hemisphere of the brain to the right, through the corpus collosum - that is, from the structuring, organising hemisphere, to the visualising, sensing one particular. In the overwhelming majority of traditions about the globe this 'breakthrough' will be assisted by the use of percussive sound, such as drumming, rattling or clapping. Even though hallucinogens, these kinds of as ayahuasca, are commonly advertised in the West as a signifies to support alter consciousness, in reality only about ten% of conventional shamans use crops in this way. Metaphysically, the journey begins when the shaman's consciousness shifts from the right here and now and enters worlds visible only to her. These worlds, which vary with every culture and custom around the planet, are described as 'alternate reality', 'the realm of the spirits', or 'non-normal reality'. Some traditions get in touch with shamans 'the walker in between the worlds' due to the fact they are the bridge between 'here' and 'there'.

The Best in Spiritual Books

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 12:00 AM PST

Article by Gabblet

If you're looking for the best spiritual books available online, you need look no further than the Tej Gyan Foundation's online store at The Tej Gyan Foundation (TGF) is an Indian nonprofit organization devoted to nothing less than creating a global, highly-evolved society. It is now possible to buy spiritual books from TGF, books which share the wisdom of Tej Guru Sirshree Tejparkhiji (known to his followers as Sirshree). These teachings are also available in the form of discourses in DVD, VCD, and ACD format.Sirshree, a spiritual master and founder of TGF, has written over 50 books, some of the best spiritual books available anywhere. "Tej Gyan" means "Bright Truth;" the Tej Gyan path is a system for wisdom that leads the spiritual seeker from self-help, to self-realization, to enlightenment. Sirshree himself is an enlightened guru whose spiritual quest began early in life. After a long period of searching for truth that took him through many different systems of thought and schools of meditation, he discovered that the missing link in the many paths to enlightenment was "understanding" itself. He writes, "All paths that lead to the truth begin differently, but end in the same way: with understanding. Understanding is the whole thing. Listening to this understanding is enough."

Listening to a highly-evolved teacher is indeed enough to lead one to truth. So is buying and reading spiritual books written by a true master. The TGF online store at offers a wide array of titles by Sirshree on self-help, spirituality, human development, enlightenment and fulfillment. One of the best spiritual books now available online is Sirshree's Inner Ninety--Hidden Infinity. In this book, the guru explains the link between what we are at the core (our "Inner 90 %") and lasting success, happiness, and fulfillment in life. The remaining 10% (or "Top Ten") is our outward appearance, which is of relatively little importance. When one's Inner Ninety is strong, the Top Ten naturally becomes attractive to other pe! ople.Tho se interested in buying spiritual books will also be delighted to hear of Sirshree's title, The Magic of Awakening. In this question-answer book, the master explores spirituality in the context of everyday life. Sirshree explains how genuine spirituality can lead us forward in our life's journey, raising our level of consciousness and allowing us to awaken to the magic that resides within. Another popular title is Complete Meditation: 222 Questions and Answers. This is the ideal text for anyone interested in meditation, from the complete novice to the experienced practitioner.

Among the very best spiritual books on the Web site is Enlightenment: Experience the Self, Now! In this book, Sirshree teaches that enlightenment consists of unity with Universal Consciousness (the Self), experienced by fully realizing one's true nature. Contrary to the view that one must search for enlightenment in some far-distant time and over the course of many lifetimes, this book lays out in lucid prose how to attain this goal here and now. This is a title not to be missed!

The Joy of Giving Can Take On a Deeper Meaning through thoughtful Spiritual Gifts

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 09:00 PM PST

Article by John Kennedy

Christmas isn't too far away and those of us, who love to gift our dear ones thoughtful, worthy gifts, plan ahead. We prepare long list, keep leeway with a few choices, then decide on the preferable locales for shopping, to get items of the right quality. We make timetables and plan to finish our shopping well in hand so as to avoid the last minute rush that most of us inevitable have to tackle in the end. There are always a few some things, which one forgot to buy till the last moment; a friend or relative that somehow got left out of the original list. Who would want to be a source of pain or embarrassment to anyone, least of all a dear friend, that too during the season of goodwill?

Yes, as soon as one Christmas gets over, nebulous thoughts of the next Christmas slowly start accumulating. A vague notion of - next year I think I'll buy her that… then her set will be complete. Or wish I knew he had developed such a passion for cooking…that blender I saw, would have been an ideal gift… if his interest continues to grow, next year I should definitely gift him one of the latest kitchen appliances. He would have loved that - maybe next year…. Or even, I wish I get that next year… if I give hints, dad will surely gift me that… and so it continues, for most of us have no control over our thoughts and they go tumbling over each other, wandering here, there and everywhere.

Halt right there in your tracks! This is Christmas we are talking about. All of us complain that we are commercialising everything, yet we are right there in the middle, so relishing every aspect of Christmas that gives us all the earthly pleasures that we are oblivious to our spiritual needs. We spend time and money on Christmas decorations and what a visual treat it is to rest eyes on a beautifully bedecked Christmas tree, or a room resplendent in the colours of Christmas: white, red and green. We splurge on food, drink, and company and thoroughly enjoy everything about Christmas, the wonderful aromas emanati! ng from the kitchen as well as the merry sounds of Christmas carols rising on the eventide. Well, Christmas is a festive celebration and meant for enjoying with ones families and dear ones. At the same time, we should not forget, it's a time for spirituality; a time to pause and be conscious of being close to God, to thank him for all that we have received and to pray. It is the time for midnight mass; feeling the presence of God; a time to commune with God and accept that we are a part of him and will one day go back to him.

In some part of our souls, we all know this; we are aware of having our own special relationship with Him. It's just that our busy lives make us lose focus but we owe it to ourselves to make sure that our feet are firmly grounded, to consciously reaffirm our relationship with God from time to time. We should try to avoid wastage and needless spending when so many are below the poverty line and it is our Christian duty to think of these people, to extend our hands in help. When we spend money on Christmas gifts this year, let it be on Christian Gifts, let it be on Spiritual Gifts that will lift our Christmas above mundane earthly pleasures, instead be a true celebration of the festival of giving.

Steve Jobs regretted delaying cancer surgery

Article by Liba456

Apple Inc co-founder Steve Jobs refuse potentially life-saving cancer operation for nine months, shrugging off his family's protests and opting as an alternative for alternative medicine, according to the tech visionary's biographer. When e eventually required surgery, the rare form of pancreatic cancer had multiply to the tissues surrounding the organ, biographer Walter Isaacson said in an interview with "60 Minutes" on CBS, to be aired resting on Sunday.Jobs also played down the seriousness of his form and told everyone he was cured but kept receiving treatment in secret, Isaacson said in the interview. The biography hits bookstores October 24 and emerged from scores of interviews with Jobs. It is expected to paint an unprecedented, no-holds-barred portrait of a man who famously guarded his privacy fiercely but whose death ignited a global outpouring of grief and tribute. The book reveals Jobs was bullied in school, tried various quirky diets as a teenager, and exhibited early strange behavior such as staring at others without blinking, according to the Associated Press, which said it bought a copy on Thursday, without disclosing how.In his "60 Minutes" interview, Isaacson confirmed details that had been speculated upon or widely reported, including that Jobs might have been cured of his "slow-growing" cancer had he sought professional treatment sooner, rather than resorting to unconventional means.Jobs deeply regretted putting off a decision that might have ultimately saved his life, according to Isaacson."He tries to treat it with diet. He goes to spiritualists. He goes to various ways of doing it macrobiotic ally and he doesn't get an operation," Isaacson said in the interview."I think that he kind of felt that if you ignore something, if you don't want something to exist, you can have magical thinking," he said. "We talked about this a lot."Jobs announced in August 2004 that he had undergone surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his pancreas. In 2008 and 2009 -- as his dwindling weight stir! red incr easing alarm in Silicon Valley and on Wall Street -- he said first he was fighting a "common bug," then that he was suffering from a hormone imbalance. In 2009, news emerged that he had undergone a liver transplant.FAVORITE BAND: BEATLESJobs died on October 5 at the age of 56. Outpourings of sympathy swept across the globe as state leaders, business rivals and fans paid their respects to the man who touched the daily lives of countless millions through the Macintosh computer, bipod, phone and pad.He had never revealed much about his life or thinking -- until he commissioned Isaacson for a biography he hoped would let his children know him better. The book shed new light on how Jobs' relationship with longtime friend and ex-Apple board member, then-Google Inc CEO Eric Schmidt -- unraveled when the Internet search giant chose to go toe-to-toe with Apple in the smartphone arena.According to AP's account of the biography, Jobs went on an expletive-laced rant against what he called "grand theft," after Google launched its Android mobile software on phones made by Taiwan's HTC Corp in 2010."I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple's billion in the bank, to right this wrong," Jobs was cited as saying in the book, according to AP. "I'm going to destroy Android, because it's a stolen product. I'm willing to go thermonuclear war on this."Experts say Apple and Samsung Electronic's legal patent battle -- spanning at least three continents -- was really an attack on Google's 3-year-old software, now the world's most-used smartphone operating system.Details also emerged about Jobs' life away from the world of business, which by all accounts had consumed most of his time.Adopted as a baby by a family in Silicon Valley, Jobs met his biological father -- Abdulfattah "John" Jandali -- several times in the 1980s without realizing who he was, according to Isaacson.Jandali had been running a restaurant in the area at the time. But Jobs never got in touch with Jandali once he found! out the restaurateur was his biological father, according to an excerpt from the TV interview posted on CBS' website. The technology icon also revealed he stopped going to church at age 13 after he saw starving children on the cover of Life Magazine, the AP cited the book as saying.Jobs spent years studying Zen Buddhism and has famously traveled through India in search of spiritual guidance. He talked in his biography about his love for design and called Apple's design chief Jonathan Ive his "spiritual partner"; Ive had "more operation power" at Apple than anyone besides Jobs himself, according to AP.Jobs, who counted The Beatles among his favorites, came up with the name of his iconic company while on one of his "fruitarian diets." He had just returned from an apple farm and thought the moniker was "fun, spirited and not intimidating," AP cited the biography as saying.

Buddhist Trance Dance

This is a dance performed by young monks at Ganden Sumtseling Gompa, a monastery located north of the city of Zhongdian (Shangri-La) in Yunnan province on the southeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. The dance begins with one monk emerging from the main temple. He performs a routine that initially faces the temple, then faces all the directions of the wind, and then spirals around a central point where there is a dark quilt and wooden square (these symbolize a demon). His dance eventually accelerates and incorporates jumping movements, and in its finale dozens of other monks join in to perform the circular dance around the quilt, until in the end they are all crowded around its center. The dance concludes with couples of monks taking leaps towards the temple, praying towards its entrance, praying away from its entrance, and then jumping inside. Altogether this takes about three hours. The dance is performed annually, during a ritual where the monks dress in elaborate costumes and masks and dance around a large effigy of the demon (rather than a quilt). The purpose of the dance is to contain the angry spirit of the demon, possibly to recreate the Tibetan myth of the subjugation of an angry Himalayan goddess by an Indian monk, which popularized the monk and allowed for the introduction of Buddhism to Tibet. This video is an amalgamation of clips recorded during the initial monk's rehearsal for the ritual.

Stress Management for Busy People

Stress Reduction
by gfpeck

Article by Destin Lucas

Stress is one of the fastest-growing epidemics in the world. Latest statistics indicate that 75% of  people experience stress at least twice per month, and more than half these people say they find this stress debilitating. Stress has been identified as a key contributor to high blood pressure, heart disease, and strokes. That's why effective stress management has become a necessity for every one of us. Here are a few stress relief techniques you can use immediately to reduce your stress today.

Stress Management Tip 1: Scientific research indicates that music can relieve stress by slowing down and balancing brain waves. Relaxation music such as New Age, Baroque, and Chillout can stimulate Alpha and Theta brainwave states, which are states of complete relaxation. One of the key reasons for this effect is that these types of music utilize a tempo between 55 and 85 beats per minute. Studies have found that music played at this tempo creates a feeling of peacefulness and tranquillity. Furthermore, relaxing music can balance the left and right hemispheres of your brain, leading to reduction of mental imbalances and stress.

Stress Management Tip 2: Deep breathing is one of the fastest and most effective stress management techniques in existence. Research has found that our breathing tempo directly affects our mental states. For instance, rapid and shallow breathing causes states of increased excitement or tension, whilst slow, deep, and steady breathing creates mental states of calm and relaxation. Here's how you use this technique. Begin by taking in a deep slow breath, and then slowly breathe out with a sigh. Take in another slow deep breath, taking about 4 seconds to breathe in. Now hold that breath for 2 seconds and then slowly breathe out for 4 seconds. Follow this pace and rhythm for a few minutes as you notice how much more relaxed you are feeling.

Stress Management Tip 3: Billionaire businessman J. Paul Getty identified the habit of calmness as one of the! most im portant habits of an aspiring executive. It makes sense. When you are calm, you think better and make better decisions. A panicky person can't be relied on and often makes mistakes. So starting today, practice the habit of remaining calm, no matter the circumstances. Your life will improve, because you'll no longer be subject to the whim of every circumstance that comes your way.

Stress Management Tip 4: Laugh your stress off. Jim McDowell, VP of Marketing for BMW, believes that a day isn't a good day if you haven't laughed to the bottom of your lungs at least five times. This is sage advice. Laughter releases many stress reduction hormones such as endorphins. If you want a quick laugh, visit one of the many online video websites such as YouTube and peruse the comedy section, or spend time in the company of the funniest person you know. It's very true that a laugh a day can keep the stress at bay.

Stress Management Tip 5: Visualization is a powerful stress reduction technique. Take a moment simply to relax, and breathe in and out slowly and deeply. As you do, close your eyes and imagine yourself on a relaxing beach in the Caribbean. See the beautiful blue ocean as you hear the waves gently caressing the white sandy shore; feel the warm relaxing sun and gentle sea breeze on your skin. Let this place be your inner sanctuary during times of stress, your place to relax and let your mind unwind for just a moment, to renew your focus and concentration once again.

In Conclusion

Stress can be beaten. All it takes is a little focus and the application of effective stress relief techniques. Take a moment today to apply even one of these stress management techniques to your life. You'll feel more relaxed than you have felt in a long long time.

Prozac Works Better When Given with Talk Therapy

Tens of millions of people in the United States have taken fluoxetine, sold under the brand name Prozac, since the Food and Drug Administration approved it 24 years ago. But while the antidepressant has helped many, questions have arisen about why people taking the drug see varying results.

Now a new study in mice reinforces recent findings that fluoxetine by itself doesn't give a strong benefit unless accompanied by cognitive "talk" therapy.

"We showed that a combination of antidepressant-drug treatment with a mouse model of psychological exposure therapy produced a beneficial effect that was not achieved by either treatment alone," said study author Eero Castrén, a professor of neuroscience at the University of Helsinki.

Two treatments needed

In the study, researchers conditioned mice to be afraid of a noise by giving them a small shock when they heard it.

But the mice had been divided — about half had been given fluoxetine for three weeks before this conditioning.

After the fear conditioning, some of the mice were given what the researchers call "extinction therapy" — the researchers reduced the mice's fear of the noise itself by making the noise but not giving the accompanying shock.

In the final stages of the experiment, the researchers shocked the mice five times without the noise. The next day, they sounded the noise to see how the mice would react, and examined the brains of the mice.

Mice that had been treated with fluoxetine and given the extinction therapy had different brain responses to the noise and were less likely to freeze when they heard it in the final stage of the experiment than mice given only one of the two treatments.

About 15 percent of the mice that had undergone extinction therapy and received fluoxetine froze in response to the noise, whereas just under 40 percent of those who hadn't received the drug froze.

Meanwhile, just over 40 percent of the mice that received the drug but no extinction therapy froze, while mice that neither received the drug nor gotten the therapy froze at a rate of about 60 percent.

While the study was conducted in mice, it confirms and helps explain findings that, in people, either talk therapy or fluoxetine alone is less effective than the two together. A 2004 review by researchers in Italy and Switzerland of 16 clinical trials found that "psychological treatment combined with antidepressant therapy is associated with a higher improvement rate than drug treatment alone." And a 2007 study from Duke University of adolescents with major depression reached a similar conclusion.

A brain that is receptive to change

"I really thought this was exciting in that it provides real…insight into what the mechanism of the need for both psychotherapy and pharmacological treatment of depression are," said Elissa Chesler, a neuroscientist at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine.

"And it makes perfect sense when you think about it, that the nervous system needs to be receptive to change," Chesler said. "Making the nervous system changeable, but not providing any insight or exposures or therapeutic experience that will inform that change… then success is unlikely."

Despite the wide use of antidepressants, researchers have not clearly understood why they work. Fluoxetine and other antidepressants do not seem to have an immediate impact, but rather change mood over time.

The new study furthers the evidence for the idea that antidepressants work by affecting the growth and rewiring of neurons in the brain, which would explain why the drugs appear to work better over an extended period.

"We provide evidence that antidepressant treatment reactivates a plastic state in the amygdala, which is typically [found] during the sensitive period of early postnatal life. When given during this plastic state, extinction training may guide connectivity in [the] amygdala network to bring about a long-term fear removal," Castrén said.

Such plasticity may have wider implications as well. In 2008, Castrén was among the authors of a study of rats published in the journal Science suggesting that amblyopia, or "lazy eye," a condition easily treatable in children but not in adults, could be affected by using fluoxetine, because the drug restored the brain to a state similar to that of early development.

But the new study suggests that if the antidepressants are rewiring the brain, the brain also needs guidance in the process.

"You could be giving some new wiring, but if you're still following the old plan…then all that new wiring is for naught, you're just playing into hardening of the existing perception," Chesler said. "There really is a role for involvement of clinicians in the actual therapy in addition to pharmacological treatment."

The findings also highlight that while many people are being prescribed antidepressants, a growing number may not find a benefit.

In August, a study published in the journal Health Affairs found a growing number of prescriptions for antidepressants being written by nonpsychiatrists without a corresponding diagnosis, reaching almost 73 percent of prescriptions.

"I think it is important to emphasize that our studies suggest that combined treatment with antidepressants and rehabilitation should be considered in every case when antidepressant drugs are being used," Castrén said.

The study is published in the Dec. 23 issue of the journal Science.
