Kaya consists o! f breath ing, clear comprehending, postures, repulsiveness of body, reflections on material elements; contemplations regarding to the cemetery. The second one is 'feelings' also known as 'vedana'. The third one is 'mind' known as 'citta'. The fourth one is 'mental contents' known as 'dhamma'. Dhamma is further divided into aggregates, hindrances,sense-bases, factors of enlightenment and the noble truths.

Buddha doctrine states that the two qualities of the mind, serenity and insight are attained through meditation. They are known as the 'swift messengers of nibbana'.

There are forty methods of meditation that Buddha has preached. These methods of meditation develop concentration and consciousness. Buddha also advised to choose the method of meditation as per the requirement of the individual needs and individual mental frame. Guidance is necessary to learn meditation from a knowledgeable person.

Buddhist meditation methods have also included the best practices from other orders like Zongmi typology. Zongmi typology has been framed by the Chinese and others. As per them, all meditation methods look the same externally, but, they differ in motive and purpose internally. The best known technique, mindfulness meditation is a widely practiced type of meditation. The five types of meditative techniques are Ordinary, Outside Way, Small Vehicle, Great Vehicle and Supreme Vehicle.

Kamalashila is the famous teacher of the western Buddhist order. According to him, the five fundamental techniques of meditation are contemplation of impermanence, metta bhavana including all four Brahma-viharas, mindfulness of breathing, six element practice and contemplation of conditionality.

The Buddhist meditation practices are widely varied to suit individual preference and needs. You can choose the practice most relevant to your needs and practice them to attain good health, well being and spirituality.

What your body can do depends on what your mind can conceive. It's all like a camera. Whatever the lens captures, the film prints. Don't expect a photo of something that was not captured by the lens.

The body can only come up with a potential that the mind can imagine. The mind is designed as a command center, and the body serves as production department. When the mind is strong, the body will obey. When the mind is creative, the body will create accordingly.

When the reverse happens, inability sets in. When the mind is weak and overwhelmed, the body takes over and commands the mind. Thus, at the slightest hint of difficulty and pain, the body will give up and tell the mind it can do no more.

The mind can do nothing except agree with the spoiled body, and quit. When the body doesn't feel like doing anything--like, when you feel lazy and any excuse will do for not getting out of bed--and the mind is too weak to oppose that, you have a case of a body being atop the head. And from that abnormal scenario will flow an equally abnormal life. All issues in life will spread from that, and you will have a total wreck in your hands.

The head ought to be always on top of the body, and this means the body ought to obey the mind always. Many may ask, "What if the mind is also a wreck and commands the body to stay dormant?" This scenario is often mistaken as a lazy mind commanding the body into idleness.

Many experts say a healthy mind actually always opts for a positive course of action, never inaction. When the mind seems to work otherwise, it is proof of a subverted mind controlled by a spoiled, pampered body. It thinks negatively and unproductively precisely because the body has taught and controlled it to be thus.

The mind can be strengthened by training it to make decisions the body will obey. If you adopt a life principle, make sure everything you do is based on it. The mind decides what is right and the body is given practical things to do in relation to it.

Once t he mind decides something the body is unwilling to do, a tug-of-war starts. It is in such conflict that the body must be disciplined to succumb to the mind. If this is accomplished, the mind is strengthened and given authority over the body, which is trained to respond positively to such authority. The person becomes "highly principled." As this goes on, the mind is promoted to heights never before imagined, and dares (and is encouraged) to go beyond limits, tugging the body along the way. The body does what it is told to do. So the body begins to outdo itself as the mind imagines it to be doing so. When the head is put in its rightful place of authority over the body, limitless potentials break out of their hiding and release the ace champion in a person.

There are two parts of the brain as we all know; the left and the right. Now somewhere inside the brain is our mind. The actual part that holds our emotions and memories. The mind is part of our soul and is who we are. What we need to discover is the many layers of the mind. The mind has two parts also; the conscious and the sub-conscious. The sub-conscious normally does mind control of our conscious mind, and this results in our behavior. What we all need to discover is how the conscious mind can be used to control the sub-conscious mind. This is a good mind control secret that I will try to reveal to you. You see the subconscious mind does not know the difference between a real experience and a vividly imagined one. This is how we have been able to defeat many diseases by using imagery. We trick the sub-conscious mind into believing that what we are imagining is real. Once you affect the belief system the sub-conscious mind goes to work getting all our healing powers working and probably using energy that we're not even aware of. The sub-conscious mind takes over and miraculous things happen. There are many stories about placebo pills curing someone of a disease, some that were even life threatening. So how do we fool our sub-conscious into doing what we require? Our sub-conscious mind holds the creative mind, the part of our mind that takes all the information in our memory bank and creates what it thinks we want from that information including self-image. It doesn't question anything, it believes what it is told. The sub-conscious then uses all our abilities to get what it thinks we want. For example if you have a belief that you are a loser, the creative mind will keep creating ways for you to lose no matter how hard we try on the conscious level to use mind control. It will guide you, on the sub-conscious level, in the wrong direction. Hearing about people who keep choosing the same kind of mates, that are not good for them is not surprising w! hen you understand this. Some people are successful in achieving financial wealth but their love relationships are poor or non existant, and there is the exact reverse. Great love relationships but their relationships with money are less than desirable. You see if there is information in your sub-conscious that believes something is for your survival, no matter how bad it is for you, your sub-conscious mind is going to do every thing it can to make sure you get it. Alcoholism is a good example of this. On the other hand, if you believe you are lucky, then again your sub-conscious mind will exercise its control and you will have some unbelievable luck. We all know someone who seems to be always lucky. So as you can see, we all need to discover mind control. The question then becomes; How? There are many self help or self improvement books out there. Taking the time to read them all would be a lifetime undertaking. Some people try to find mind control but find they cannot as they have artificial memories that block their path. Our parents and teachers usually implant these memories on us. These memories are labeled belief. Some beliefs are good for us and some bad. I cannot even scratch the surface of what is good or bad, as it is about perspectives. Our barren world is not Suchness

Our phenomenal world is barren of true reality which ever remains unborn, not-become, not-made, and not-compounded.  If our phenomenal world and true reality were exactly the same, then just by looking at any thing a being would become a Buddha instantly!  This is why the Samdhinirmocana Sutra says that "the character of the ultimate is not included in the character of the afflicted" which is all of phenomenal reality. 

We might also call true reality tathata or Suchness which I sometimes translate as 'substance' which means "essential nature."  

To help provide a clearer picture of tathata here are some examples of how it is used in the Lankavatara Sutra

When the external world is not grasped [as real] there is neither causation nor reality; there is the essence of suchness (tathata), which is the [spiritual] realm of the wise.

Suchness (tathata), emptiness, realm of truth (dharmadhatu), the various forms of the will-body— these I call Mind-only.

[Relative] knowledge (vijnana) takes place where there is something resembling an external world; [transcendental] knowledge (jñâna)1 belongs to the realm of Suchness. When a turning-back (paravritta) takes place, there is a state of imagelessness, which is the realm of the wise.

When relative knowledge is purified by keeping itself aloof from discrimination, and detached from imagination, there is a turning-back to the abode of suchness.

When the [Yogin] enters upon Mind-only7, he will cease discriminating an external world; establishing himself where suchness has its asylum he will pass on to Mind-only.

change your life forever. Trust me if you have not experience this you don't know what meditation is. Most

people that try to learnhow to meditate, are doing it for the benefits that they've heard about like; reducing stress,

having the ability to control your emotions, being able to heal yourself, and the list goes on and on. The problem with learning

meditation with these goalsin mind, is that each one of these are side effects of going into deep Meditation, and since

your goal is the side effect you will never go deep enough into Meditation to feel the true awe inspiring power

of Meditation, which gives you the side effects you are looking for. I apologize if that was a little complicated

for some beginners, but stay with me, and keep reading my blogs. You will start to understand more and

more, and when I actually teach you how to meditate you'll understand all this trust me, it is so worth it. It is hard to explain to someone, that has never experince deep meditation, what exactly it is It is like me trying to explain what a mango taste like, to someone who has never tasted the sweet tart

juices. But none the less I will do my best to explain it to you. First Meditation is not an action,

you can'tdo Meditation. Youcan't sit down and meditate. Meditation is a state of being, it is the state of being

t! otally p resent within the here and now, oh yeah that ever elusive present moment.

Where as this is the correct answer to; what is Meditation, I know it leaves you with a since of longing, like the

answer was not really answered. So I will describe to you what it's like to be in the here and now, so you can get a better picture. Now firstyou have got to understand, in order for meto explain it to you, I've got to break it up into

somewhat of a time line, but when I'm in Meditation this happens instantly all at the same time. So sit down, and

strap yourselves in,because we are going for a ride boys and girls. When I'm in meditation, I'm aware of my whole body. From my kidneys and liver, all the way right down to the really small ones like your pituitary, and pineal

glands in your head. I'm aware of all my bones, along with my muscles, tendons, and so on. I'm aware of my energy centers,or chakras if you wish to call them that, and my energy

channels, or meridians. I becomeaware of things outside my body like; the ground, the things in my room,

people, animals, trees, plants the air. Everything around me, and I can take this has far out as I wish, meaning

I can feel theentire planet, the moon, other planets, the sun, and stars. All this at the same time. No, this isn't a visualization. To visualize means you are seeing pictures in your head.

Everything feels as ifthey are inside me, the Mango tree outside my bedroom feels just like one of my arms.

The feeling is indescribable, the pleasure, and sheer ecstasy is beyond what words can describe. I did a

survey, a couple years ago, about what was peoples most enjoyable experience. Most people about 80%

I'm in the process of reading Return to the One which led me to your website and blogs.  Your writings have made me question, think, and laugh.  Thanks!

I have spent many a year searching for something to satisfy this deep longing within.  I've known for sometime that I wasn't going to find "it" in the material world and have read zillions of books and tried various spiritual traditions hoping that they would lead me to that place of "final fulfillment."

Long story short, your book and my recent foray into Buddism have led me to the realization that everything I seek is within me already and meditation is the highway to my destination...which really isn't a destination, but you know what I mean.

So, now I'm trying to practice daily meditation and throw in a bit of yoga....

My question for you Brian (keeping in mind I haven't finished the book yet and you may provide an answer on the last page), is why materiality?  What's the point?  If Spirit residing in the upper realms is complete as it is and needs nothing, why does it take this journey  into bodies, animals, and nature?  Is it because it wants to "know or experience" itself, is it just an unstoppable desire to move from the simple to the complex?

It's like "we" incarnate here and then we all, in some form or fashion, try to get back to where we came from.  Why don't we just stay where we are and kick back?

Margie, you've asked some excellent questions.

My short response to why materiality? is... "Why" implies a choice; the cosmos isn't a product of choice. My short response to what's the point? is... there isn't one.

Now, these responses aren't incompatible with the Neoplatonic teachings of Plotinus that I described in Return to the One. Plotinus says that all things emanated from the One as if by necessity. And since he viewed the One (ultimate reality) as ineffable, there's no point to the cosmos that could be understood by us humans -- assuming such exists at all.

But if you've read some of my blog posts, almost certainly you know how much my attitude toward life has changed since I wrote that book.

I'm pleased to keep it in print because there is a lot to like about Plotinus. Plus, Amazon sales bring in over half of the cost of my Mini Cooper S loan payment each month. With my turn toward here-and-now materiality-embracing, I get more meaningful enjoyment from driving my Mini than envisioning abstract spiritual possiblities that only exist in the human mind.

Yesterday I was talking with a philosophically-minded friend about the classic "Why is there something rather than nothing?" question. What I said to her was basically how I ended a post I wrote earlier this year.

What is simply is. There is something rather than nothing. I find this eminently satisfying. More than that, actually, much more. It's awesome. Mindblowing. Astoundingly meaningful.

Why? LIke existence itself, there's no why.

Which means, there's no point either. Not to the universe. Not to me. Or to you, to anything.

"Why" and "point" are human intellectualizations. They have their place in certain situations, like my wife asking me why her printer isn't working, or when we're confused about what someone is saying and ask, what's your point?

But when it comes to the cosmos, "why" and "point" are meaningless words.

This is why I've become even more irreligious since writing Return to the One. I'm no longer interested in getting back to where I supposedly came from (heaven, God, the One, pure spirit, whatever) because I no longer believe there's any place but where I am right now.

So, yes, let's kick back. 

Yesterday my wife and I had a pleasant private dance lesson. Though we've been learning ballroom/partner dancing for over five years, a lot of moves aren't in our repertoire. So near the end of the swing lesson, when our instructor said "Do you want to learn how to dip?", I told her, "Absolutely. This is what has been missing from my life!"

I could tell that my wife wasn't quite as excited, since after learning a simple Lean to Side Dip, we moved on to the much cooler Woman Goes Way Over dip. (Don't know the actual names of these dance moves.)

With the second dip I embraced my wife with both hands, took a fairly large step to my left, and turned my body, holding my wife up as her back faced the floor and her non-standing leg assumed as much of a feminine, graceful, elegant position as was possible for a woman wondering if I was going to drop her.

The dip took trust. On her part. On my part. My wife had to believe she would be embraced as she relaxed into the dip. I had to believe that I was fully capable of holding her up.

Materiality is what holds us up. It sustains us. We can trust it.

Like you said, Margie, "why don't we just stay where we are and kick back?" No reason not to. We have no choice. No alternative. If we find ourselves in a spiritual realm -- unlikely, but possible -- then that's where we are. For now, though, Earth is our home. Probably the only one we'll ever know.

Try resting in the embrace of God, spirit, or some other supposed supernatural entity. No one can do it, because these are abstractions, concepts, neurological brain-firings that we humans mistake for substantial reality.

I'm not saying that materiality always dances with us as we want it to. Quite the contrary. Just as with person-to-person dancing, there are bumps, missteps, awkward moments, feelings of "what the hell is happening?" (That's how my wife and I dance, at least.)

But it's the rhythm of the dance between us and materiality that's important, not the specific steps. This is a lesson that's been drummed into us by our dance instructors: stay in harmony with the music, and you'll be dancing the way you should, even if how you move is simple and basic.

Same with the music of life.

The only band that's really playing is that of materiality, the physical universe. Thoughts about spirituality, Platonic forms, divine beings, they're just... (duh) thoughts. They can't sustain you, because they exist only within your own brain. 

There's no point to materiality because it simply is. It holds us up because there is nothing else. We trust it because there is no other option for us.

There's another kind of peace most people aspire for. It's peace of mind. Some people have peace of mind only when they are asleep. Perhaps this is possible only when they are physically tired or exhausted, and the urge to sleep is stronger than the need to have peace of mind.

However, having a disturbed mind will keep you awake night after night. Your entire well-being will be adversely affected. Your physical health will deteriorate. The longer this persists, the more extensive the damages will become. Don't wait until the damage becomes irreversible.

Find the cause of your troubled mind. Trouble lies in the mind. Ask yourself what is disturbing you. Part of it is probably made up of fear, self-pity, insecurity, and failures, to name a few. All of these are products of negative thinking that pollutes the mind unnecessarily. Face your troubles with courage by casting out the negative feelings of fear and insecurity. Empty your mind of all these negative habits. Don't leave your mind empty for long to prevent it from leaning back to the negative side.

Keep on casting out all negative thoughts by emptying them from your mind, and refill with positive and inspiring thoughts. Do this process as often as necessary - every time you think you need to. By repeating this process, you are practicing good habits aimed at keeping your mind free of negative thoughts and full of positive vibrations to achieve peace of mind. Ultimately, this habit will become part of your daily activities until you get used to it. Once you do, you will find everything you do to be positive based in an effortless manner.

You may ask, "Just how do you unload negative thoughts and load in positive ones?" One of the best ways to do this is by visualization. Picture peaceful scen! es in yo ur mind. For instance, you can initially picture in your mind a rainforest being battered by stormy weather. Branches of trees are vigorously swinging in all directions. Everything seems to be chaotic, just like a troubled mind. But storms don't last. They move on. When they leave, sunshine or good weather comes in.

A troubled mind is like a storm in your mind. Once the problem is gone, you will have peace of mind. Try to build a strong foundation of positive attitudes so that when another storm hits your mind, you're prepared to face it. This is similar to practicing positive attitudes. Going back to the rainforest on a beautiful weather, doesn't it look and feel peaceful? This is how your state of mind should be - peaceful so that it can be harnessed to obtain an enjoyable life.

There are many other ways to generate a peaceful mind. Think of words that suggest a calm mind - words like tranquil (a tranquil sea), serene, harmony, and stillness. Read poems, phrases, and excerpts that suggest a peaceful mind. You can also join group talks where the discussion is centered on how to achieve a mind harmonious with peace, love, and happiness. If you prefer to be on your own, moments of silence can make you obtain peace of mind. The library is a suitable place to be in. Pick up a book that suggests peace of mind and you may be able to find other means to obtain your objective.

Calgary campus centre mends the mind

It is a stressful time for university students who are in the middle of writing final exams but now a little relief can be found on campus.

Staff at the University of Calgary's Wellness Centre say students are all feeling the pressure of finals and dealing with the holiday season.

To help students cope, they have converted a dance studio in the Kinesiology Department on campus into a stress free zone.

The overhead lights are turned off and soothing music is played and a labyrinth is laid out in the middle of the floor for walking meditation.
