As creators and users of technology, we have been greatly empowered. Yet this power often comes at the cost of becoming entirely dependent on this very technology.

Our enthusiasm to explore and to know is often limited to internet searches. We do not go out and explore nature and so tend to lose the human touch. Nothing can replace the experience of touching snow or feeling the coolness of the flowing river.

While it is much easier to know more about anything by connecting to the World Wide Web, the enthusiasm to discover and learn firsthand is receding and only the virtual experience remains. But this is not the real thing.

We could discover ways in which technology can help to facilitate our spirit of inquiry. Is there a middle path in the use of technology and how do we find it?

It is a fine line of balance to know how much to depend on information and when to rely on intuition. It is a skill to deepen our knowledge with information yet broaden our vision with real experience. Both skill and balance are essential to avoid the risk of overexposure and fatigue; to keep creativity flowing and enthusiasm alive. This is where spirituality helps.

Spirituality is not a dogmatic rule. It is dynamic action, continuously accommodating and adapting to changes in circumstances and the environment. It makes you ever accepting of change. This ability to adapt is essential in a technological environment where the need to upgrade and update oneself is imperative to stay ahead.

In the race to keep up with technology, we should not forget the mind that created it. We are used to charging our phones and laptops. What can we do to re-charge ourselves? For the human mind to be more effective, it needs to be charged through meditation.

Meditation brings centredness. It is the subtler technology for mind management. It calms the agitated mind. It connects us to our source and brings us back home to ourselves. It is important that we connect to the 'inner-net' and not just the Internet. A mother knows intuitively what her child needs even before it begins to speak. She is a master of the language of the heart. This ability to connect with life around us is innate and needs to be nurtured. Spirituality is the key to this cosmic connection.

When we know that we are the source, that we are ever-connected to the Supreme Intelligence, we can move ahead with a sense of belongingness and responsibility for the transformation we bring about with the technologies that are available to us. The same finger-on-a-button that can unleash a nuclear bomb can also spread peace. Walking this line of balance with effortless grace is the skill that meditation brings in us so naturally.

Living the values of caring and sharing, of seeking the highest truth and ultimate joy, of giving love and wisdom, are the signs of an individual blossoming to his full potential through spirituality. Technology should be an aide in this journey to make life a celebration.

Sustainable happiness

SONAL SRIVASTAVA

The quality of our lives depends on how well or badly we understand and manage the economic, social and environmental challenges before us, writes Sonal Srivastava.

A verse from the Katha Upanishad talks about happy co-existence: "Om saha navavatu, saha nau bhunaktu, saha viryam karavavahai, tejasvi nav adhitam astu ma vidvishavahai" - "May He protect us together, may He nourish us together, may we work diligently, let our learning be brilliant, may there be no conflict between us." Isn't the Upanishad talking about Utopia, where there are no conflicts, where sustainable values are co-created and where there is room for everyone to evolve? Sure, it seems unrealistic. Yet the ideals are worth striving for. We're facing daunting challenges in the social, economic and environmental spheres. They are interlinked; our well-being depends upon on a sustainable combination of all three, bolstered by sustainable business practices and political support.

Sustainability is the key
"All problems that the world faces today should be viewed from the perspective of this triple context," says Anant Nadkarni,vice-president, group corporate sustainability, Tata Group. The concepts of corporate sustainability and co-creation of value are now at the centre of business strategies. Such an approach generates long-term value for all in the triple context.

Co-creation implies generation of value for the company as well as the consumer and a happy co-existence for both.

"The word 'company' means people working together in collaboration; the meaning becomes slightly deeper when people come together in a way in which being together isn't simply about making money," says Tony Manwaring, CEO of UK-based 'Tomorrow's Company'. He recently co-organised a conference on 'Success Through Corporate Sustainability' in Mumbai.

With good intentions
To adopt a holistic approach to problem-solving, we need corporations that work with good intentions. Nadkarni stresses on niyat (intention). He says that good intentions are the most important thing for "they are like a national asset and it's impossible to quantify them."

Everything flows from the inherent goodness of humankind. We only need to capitalise on that. "Any company can start practising sustainability at the smallest level. In fact, an individual can start from himself, from his work station and introduce it in his factory. Whatever the type of company, it must have sustainability at its core rather than just dole out some charity at the periphery," adds Nadkarni.

In switching to sustainable practices, corporations need to take care of the way they use natural resources and manage waste, climate change and biodiversity. Wasteful business practices that result in over-consumption of energy, undermine communities or contaminate surroundings can no longer be justified for creation of value for share holders.

Investors have turned smarter; they are keen to stake their money in projects that ensure long-term safety and good returns.

"Three important factors that should influence investor's choice are a company's strategies related to water conservation, energy management and forestation. A good investment would be in a company that takes care of its carbon credits in both production and consumption," says Ravinder Pal, an executive working with a 'green' hotel chain. For most investors, "Investment in companies that are exploiting people or environment is unsustainable investment," says Nadkarni.

Clarity of purpose
To keep in step with rapidly changing social and environmental conditions, corporations will have to rethink their business strategies. It is of paramount importance to connect profit with the well-being of people. "The style of autocratic leadership will work no more," says John Knights, Chairman of LeaderShape, a UK-based firm.

Along with the readiness to adapt to change, Gen X leaders will have to transcend ego and rise above narrow self-interests, making decisions that include other stakeholders.

"Business leaders will have to be very clear on their purpose. It's the culture and behaviour that enable a system to be created. We need clarity of purpose and the capabilities to achieve it," Tony Manwaring adds.

All our actions create an impact on our immediate environment and our well-being is dependent on our surroundings.

The Bhagavad Gita clearly states the advantages of rising above selfish ends. Krishna says: "Work for the common good without selfish interests; the rewards of selfless work will take you to a supreme state." Acharya Mahapragya, in his seminal discourses on Economics of Mahavir would say that economic development should be guided by purity of means, non-erosion of moral values and limits to self-interest.

Most participants at the PHD Chamber-organised 'Acharya Mahapragya Memorial Lecture on sustainable development through ethics and value-based education' in New Delhi in November agreed that sustainability and spiritual principles go hand-in-hand.

"Creation of wealth should be concurrent with inculcation of ethics, values and spirituality. If, in the process of development, we lose our character and culture, it is only a matter of time that we will lose our development as well," says Arun Gupta, president, ISKCON Temple, Idaho, US.

Scriptures stress five values to promote a sustainable, ethical lifestyle: ahimsa or non-violence, satya or truth, asteya or not stealing, brahmacharya or restraint and aparigraha or non-possessiveness, "These values should be understood in a broader context today," says Swami Nikhilananda of Chinmaya Mission. "Many new products are introduced in the market; we use and throw. This is sheer waste that could be avoided. We must save resources for future generations," he says.

The bottom line
What is the bottom line? Whatever we do, we must think of others as well. When you think of yourself, your home and your children, you also have to think of society and the environment. If everybody around you is happy, the same happiness will reflect in you, too.

And this is conveyed in Vedic wisdom: "Sarveh bhavantu sukhinah" - "Let the whole world be in happiness."

Ask the Religion Experts: Can ordinary folks experience a state of grace?

Posted: 12 Dec 2011 10:09 AM PST

Question: Can ordinary folks experience a state of grace?

ABDUL RASHID is a member of the Ottawa Muslim community, the Christian-Muslim Dialogue and the Capital Region Interfaith Council.

By "state of grace," we usually mean Divine blessing. In this respect, we are all "ordinary folks" in the sight of God Almighty and all of us are recipients of His grace. The Muslim scripture, the Holy Qur'an, announces: "Say: 'To whom belongs all that is in the heavens and on Earth?' Say: 'To God. He has inscribed for Himself (the rule of) grace and mercy'" (6:12). We observe this grace in and around ourselves all the time.

Muslims begin every task with "With the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful." This invocation has actually two objectives. First, we remind ourselves that we cannot accomplish anything without the grace and mercy of God Almighty. At the same time, we make a humble supplication to Him seeking His blessing on and over the task in hand.

God Almighty is loving and caring for His entire creation. He not only creates, He also cherishes and sustains. He provides all that is essential for the protection, development and growth of all life. He is not only full of mercy, His grace is all-pervasive. "Of the bounties of your Lord, We bestow freely on all these as well as those: the bounties of thy Lord are not closed (to anyone)" (17:20). In other words, His grace encompasses both those obedient and disobedient and even those who do not believe in Him.

Divine grace is especially ascribed to those who have faith and do good in this world. Since human beings are prone to error, God leaves the door of His grace open to those who repent and return to Him. "Say: 'O my servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of God, for God forgives all sins: for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful" (39:53).

And on the Day of Judgment when we will be accountable for our deeds, the only source of success will be through Divine grace. When that happens, it would be a perfect state of grace.

JACK MCLEAN is a Bahá'í scholar, teacher, essayist and poet published in the fields of spirituality, Bahá'í theology and poetry.

"Unasked, I have showered upon thee My grace. Unpetitioned, I have fulfilled thy wish. In spite of thy undeserving, I have singled thee out for My richest, My incalculable favours ... O My servants! Be ablaze as the fire, that ye may burn away the veils of heedlessness and set aglow, through the quickening energies of the love of God, the chilled and wayward heart" (Gleanings from the Writings of Bahá'u'lláh, p. 322).

By this definition, a state of grace is bestowed freely by God, without the recipient's deserving the favour. Existence itself is the greatest form of grace, if one is grateful for the gift. If we begrudge being born, then life becomes an existential burden and death becomes a welcome prospect. But if we are thankful for the opportunity of being born to know and to love God, to serve Him by serving humanity and by fulfilling His purpose in our lives, then we are living in a state of grace. This applies to ordinary and extraordinary folks alike.

"God is no respecter of persons." So declared St. Peter (Acts 10: 34) and St. Paul (Rom. 2:11). Regarding obedience to the divine laws and standards, the world's privileged few do not enjoy any special status or exemptions. The same principle may be said of God's special favours and graces. They apply to all alike. I suspect that "ordinary folks" are the recipients of a state of grace more than we suspect. The challenge is to become aware of these favours and graces.

If the question implies that an individual need be holy to qualify to receive a state of grace, I would answer a cautious no. Bahá'u'lláh's declaration at the head of this answer precludes that notion. This does not mean, however, that we should take God's bounties for granted. God's good graces — faith, knowledge, love, justice, mercy, etc. — require positive demonstration in social action: "I bear witness, O friends! that the favour is complete, the argument fulfilled, the proof manifest and the evidence established. Let it now be seen what your endeavours in the path of detachment will reveal" (Bahá'u'lláh, The Hidden Words, Persian, #82).

Rabbi REUVEN BULKA is head of Congregation Machzikei Hadas in Ottawa and host of Sunday night with Rabbi Bulka on 580 CFRA.

This is a difficult question for me to answer because frankly I do not know what "state of grace" actually means.

"State of grace," according to one definition, is "unmerited Divine assistance given man (and I presume woman) for his (her) regeneration or sanctification." Alternately, "state of grace" is identified with "state of sanctification enjoyed through Divine grace."

If this is what you mean by "state of grace," then I think I can surmise what motivates your question. Your issue is that state of grace is linked in some measure to sanctification, which implies that the person who is in the state of grace is sacred, or holy, rather than ordinary.

That leads to a crucial question: who is ordinary and who is holy? My sense has always been that when a person considers himself or herself holy, that person ceases to be not only holy, but also becomes less than ordinary. On the hand, a person who considers himself or herself as merely ordinary is more likely to be more than ordinary, perhaps even holy, whatever holy means.

Too often the people whom we think of as holy have turned out to be great failures, if not phonies. Holiness in general is not, and should not be, obvious. Obvious holiness is bereft of modesty and therefore more likely to be a superficial cloak over a less than stellar reality.

Aside from the difficulty with defining who is ordinary, there is also a difficulty with the word "experience." Do you mean by this that the person senses being graced, or is it being blessed by grace without knowing it? It seems to me that we are much better off working from the common foundation that simply by being alive we are blessed (graced) by God, and that to the extent that we live meritoriously, to that extent we have brought grace into our lives.

I prefer thinking of "state of grace" as the "quality or state of being considerate or thoughtful." That is something toward which everyone can and should aspire. The moment anyone thinks that they are too extraordinary to aspire to this, at that moment they become arrogant. And the moment they embrace this state of grace, at that moment they cease to be ordinary.

Rev. GEOFFREY KERSLAKE is a priest of the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Ottawa.

A lot of ink has been spilled trying to understand how God's grace "works" but the fundamental point is that grace is a gift from God that changes and heals us and allows us to grow in His friendship and discipleship.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that "the grace of Christ is the gratuitous gift that God makes to us of his own life, infused by the Holy Spirit into our soul to heal it of sin and to sanctify it. It is the sanctifying or deifying grace received in Baptism. It is in us the source of the work of sanctification" (CCC n. 1999). But because God respects our free will so highly, He will never force us to respond to His love and mercy so although grace begins with God, it involves our co-operation.

The Catechism helpfully clarifies that "the divine initiative in the work of grace precedes, prepares, and elicits the free response of man. Grace responds to the deepest yearnings of human freedom, calls freedom to cooperate with it, and perfects freedom" (CCC n. 2022).

St. Paul touches on this when he wrote: "but by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace towards me has not been in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them — though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me (1 Corinthians 15:10)."

God's grace allows us to become a sister or brother to Jesus Christ and an heir in hope of the Kingdom of God. On our part we need to respond to this gift of God in Christ to be an authentic Christian and a true son or daughter of God.

Rev. RICK REED is senior pastor at the Metropolitan Bible Church in Ottawa.

Certainly. The good news of the Christian faith is that ordinary people can have a life-changing experience of God's grace.

While the Bible doesn't use the phrase "state of grace," it does talk about "standing in grace." Romans 5:1-2 says, "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand."

Take a closer look at these two verses and you'll discover four important things about standing in grace.

First, standing in grace is another way of talking about being at "peace with God." The earlier chapters in Romans make it clear that everyone starts out at odds with God. That's because "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). We need grace to get back on good terms with God.

Second, standing in grace is made possible "through our Lord Jesus Christ." Because Jesus took our punishment on the cross, we can be "justified" (pardoned) and "have peace with God."

Third, standing in grace is experienced "by faith." Most people think they have to earn their way back into God's favour. The Bible says we enter the place of God's grace through faith in God's Son, Jesus.

Fourth, standing in grace is available to ordinary people. The book of Romans was written to a church made up of everyday folks from different religious, cultural and economic backgrounds. God's grace can reach anyone.

To sum up, God's extraordinary grace can be experienced by ordinary people who put their faith in Christ. Those who believe in Christ are given a new standing before God — they go from being at odds with God to at peace with God. No wonder it's called amazing grace.

Rev. RAY INNEN PARCHELO is a novice Tendai priest and founder of the Red Maple Sangha, the first lay Buddhist community in Eastern Ontario.

Some Buddhists argue that, since all beings require intervention by energies different from our conditioned selves to achieve Awakening, therefore, we only achieve Awakening by grace. This is different from the question here, which wonders about a "state of grace," some special spiritual protection conferred selectively by a divinity. This is unknown in Buddhist teaching.

The scripture known as the Lotus Sutra assures every living being that, in the fullness of time, each and everyone of us will become a fully Awakened Buddha — no exceptions. There is no distinction, no higher-lower, better-worse, nearer-further. As with any journey, some will arrive there sooner, relative to others, but this is a function of the choices and actions of that being, not some preferred, protective or condemned state. Thus, while we may rely on grace, it is not selective.

The other distinction in this question is "ordinary folks," presumably not folks who are extraordinary from wealth, physical attributes or accumulation of spiritual merit. In Buddhist teaching, none of those places anyone in some special state. What we may be touching here is the praise of simplicity. In that case, Buddhism has two notable models, the "Zen fool" and the "myo-konin."

The Zen fool is an ideal represented by certain ancient masters whose comprehension of teaching and practice was so profound that they lived free of material trappings, dwelling in basic circumstances and, though their wisdom was great, they abandoned, even disparaged, conventional "book-learning." They are in such harmony with the Way that they seem childlike.

On the other hand, the myokonin (literally "those with the fragrance of saintliness") are similar, but would include those without formal or clerical training. Their exceptionality lies in their faith and devotion in the generosity of Amitabha Buddha. They disavow any personal spiritual power (called "self-power") in favour of a complete reliance on the promise of Amitabha (or "Other power").

Myokonin have no special power, protection or grace because of their simplicity. It is more that their actions have dissolved the binding power of greed and ignorance, thus reducing negative momentum on their journeys to Awakening.

BALPREET SINGH is legal counsel and acting executive director for the World Sikh Organization of Canada.

I think the closest concept to a "state of grace" in the Sikh faith is the state of "sehaj," which is the state of realization and awareness of God. A person in the state of sehaj attains a constant state of contentment and bliss and is aware of the presence of God's light within.

This state is only possible through the grace of the Guru but is available to all people, regardless of gender, ethnicity or class. But the lives they lead in order to attain this state are far from "ordinary."

The Sikh Gurus taught that spirituality isn't limited to any group. The Sikh scripture, Sri Guru Granth Sahib, is composed of verses not only of the Sikh Gurus but also of bards and saints from many different backgrounds and castes.

Amongst those included were saints like Ravidas and Kabir who were from the lowest of the so-called castes and for whom it was taught that spirituality or salvation were impossible. Kabir wrote, "if anyone sings or if anyone listens to the name of God with focused consciousness ... there is no doubt, in the end they will attain the highest state of salvation." (ang 335).

Another belief that the Sikh Gurus contested was that spirituality was only possible for a priestly class or for those people who abandon the world in search of God. The Gurus declared that there would be no priesthood and any Sikh could lead services or address the congregation. Family life was encouraged and the Gurus taught that abandoning one's family and renouncing the world to find God was in fact counterproductive.

All this having been said, the people who attain the state of sehaj live far more than just "ordinary" lives. They live according to a spiritual discipline and are driven by a thirst to experience God. They live a life of service to both God and the world and are an inspiration to countless others.

So, while "ordinary folks" can certainly experience God and the state of sehaj, the experience transforms them into something extraordinary.

Stress Reduction Through Massage

Posted: 12 Dec 2011 01:00 PM PST

Article by Patricia Harper Stewart

Although there are a number of different ways to handle stress naturally, a good massage is always going to be beneficial in order to reduce our stress quickly. The unfortunate thing is, not all of us can afford to have a massage regularly or have the time in order to devote to having a massage on a regular basis. If you fall into this category, don't think that you are completely without options. As a matter of fact, just a few minutes of self massage can go a long way in helping you to reduce your stress.

Do you work at a computer regularly? You probably already understand exactly how tense of a situation that can be. Many of us find ourselves focusing on the computer so intently that our body is compressed and our shoulders raised. Although this position may help us to focus on the task at hand, it can also leave us with muscle stiffness and soreness and can cause a number of different physical problems with our back and neck. By massaging our own shoulders regularly, perhaps spending a few seconds doing so periodically throughout the day, you can help to reduce your stress levels considerably.

Of course, if have the means to seek assistance from a licensed massage therapist you will benefit even more. Whenever a massage is done properly, it not only helps to relax the muscles, it also helps to give a free flow of energy from all parts of the body. Whenever this energy is flowing properly, it helps to naturally reduce our stress levels and can release chemicals into our body that makes us feel naturally good. For example, endorphins are often released during a massage much like those that are typically associated with physical exercise.

The benefits of a massage are simply too good to be overlooked. The unfortunate thing is, they can be a little bit expensive. If you have a partner, however, the two of you can easily learn some self massage techniques and they can help to reduce the amount of stress that each of you are feeling as a result. This is something that is not only ! enjoyabl e from a stress busting perspective, it is also enjoyable because the two of you will be doing something together. With a Google search you can find some guidelines and books to assist you.

Music: Sound Stress Reduction

Posted: 12 Dec 2011 12:00 PM PST

Article by Tony Robinson

Music--It is the soundtrack to our lives. You might have driven your first car while the Go-Gos blared on the radio. You may remember singing "Memory" at your high school graduation, or you might have had the organist play "Ode to Joy" at your wedding. You may remember the first time you heard Bruce Springsteen, or the last time you heard Madonna. Whether your musical tastes are contemporary or classical, chances are you do have a favorite form of music. And you also probably have a favorite artist or band.

But, in addition to being enjoyable, music can serve an important function as a stress reliever. It is no surprise that dentists routinely play music in their offices, or that surgeons play it during operations. Bus drivers play music to reduce stress, as do baseball players during their warm-ups.

Musicologists say that music can have a soothing effect, an effect that might have begun when we first heard music while still in our mother's womb. As a result, music may, in fact, remind us of our mothers, from whom we draw strength and comfort. It has been shown in studies that music where the flute predominates, such as Celtic or Native American music, is often the most comforting. In fact, research indicates that any music performed in person helps to synchronize the right and left brain hemispheres. Music can be especially beneficial to the individuals performing it. It provides a sense of accomplishment which can, in turn, reduce stress.

Music increases the body's serotonin levels, which are associated with good feelings. Also, music tends to enhance deep breathing, making a person feel more relaxed. Also, background music at work has been shown to cut stress levels. In addition to causing heart rates to decline, music boosts the body's temperature.

One preferable way to relax is to lie down with a set of headphones and allow the music to wash over you. In this way, you'll be intimately involved in the music--you'll feel as if you are part of the music. It is easy! to forg et the cares of the world when you can escape into music. You should select music that has a slow beat--preferably slower than 72 beats a minute, the standard heart rate.

You should focus your attention to the silence that is usually built into musical selections in order to maximize your relaxation. Another popular technique is to use a Walkman while doing your morning walk. This way, you combine the stress-busting effects of music with those of exercise. This provides a one-two punch which is guaranteed to reduce your stress level.

You might also try tuning into nature sounds. Sit in your backyard, close your eyes, and concentrate on the sounds you hear. You'll be listening to the music of crickets and songbirds, leaves rustling in the wind and wind chimes swaying in the breeze. You can also purchase a CD which offers the sounds of the ocean or the woods. You'll be amazed at how quickly you'll be carried away with the sounds. Just ten minutes sitting quietly and listening can put you in an entirely different frame of mind. You'll find you're better able to cope with the demands of the day if you've spent some time listening to music--whether it's man-made or made by nature.

It is highly important that you listen to music that appeals to you. If you never liked the Beach Boys, chances are that playing a "Best of the Beach Boys" CD will not calm you down. Furthermore, if you like classical music, but can't stand Beethoven, limit your listening to Mozart instead. The important thing is that you feel comfortable with your musical selections.

It is hard to imagine a world without music, yet most of us do not take full advantage of the art form. It can be unbelievably effective in reducing stress and improving relaxation. It is no wonder that women have been known to select their favorite music to give birth by. Music elevates our mood; it makes us feel happy and alive. Depending on the amount of stress you're under, you may end up playing music just in the morning, in the after! noon, or all day. Just remember that music time should be relaxation time.

How to deal with anger

Posted: 12 Dec 2011 12:00 PM PST

I don't know if anger, rage, and frustration are getting more common, but it certainly seems like they are.

As we find ourselves snarled in impossibly heavy traffic, overloaded with life's complexities, dealing with technology that we think should work but sometimes doesn't, and struggling to survive in a precarious and heartless economic system, it seems a lot of people live with hot coals of irritability burning inside them, and that these hot coals have more than ample opportunity to burst into the flames of anger, or to erupt as emotional explosions of rage.

Techniques from meditation can help us to damp down the flames of our ill will.

Stop, drop, and love

If you find yourself caught up in resentment and anger toward someone, the simple solution is just to stop whatever you're doing and to start cultivating metta. This definitely works. In my own practice I've lost count of the number of times that I've gone from being irritated with someone to feeling appreciative of them — sometimes in the space of just a few minutes — when I've cultivated lovingkindness toward them. Many times, of course, the ill will is more entrenched, and the best I've been able to do is to soften the anger a little. But even that's progress.

You can do this when you're walking, talking, or driving. Just introduce a current of well-wishing: may you be well, may you be happy, may you be free from suffering.

If anger arises in meditation, just switch over to cultivating metta. Sometimes people think they "shouldn't" stop the practice they're doing, based perhaps on a desire to avoid the restlessness that comes from chopping and changing practices. And while changing practices just because your mind is flighty isn't a good idea, in the case of anger arising, just let go of any notion that you "should" continue with the meditation you've been doing. Anger can be a very destructive emotion, and it's wise to treat is as an emergency situation. So switch to cultivating lovingkindness.

This doesn't necessarily mean doing the full five-stage metta bhavana practice. If you're annoyed with someone, you can just call them to mind and wish them well. You can keep doing this for as long as necessary. You may find that after a few minutes you can return to the practice you were doing, or you may end up working on developing lovingkindness for the rest of the sit.

Adjust your attitude

The way we're looking at the world can set us up for experiences of ill will. For example, when we're expecting perfection, we'll get frustrated, because perfection doesn't exist. Most people who are habitually angry have something like this going on. We often expect perfection from ourselves, from others, and from our technology, which, when you think about it, is both unreasonable and a recipe for misery.

So you can look at your attitudes, and see if you're inadvertently creating the conditions for irritability to arise. It's useful to think in terms of accessing qualities playfulness and humor, which you can do via imagery or a memory of having those qualities.

Accentuate the positive

Also along the lines of how our views condition our emotions, when we're angry with someone we generally focus only on their faults. If you remind yourself of positive things about the person you're angry with, this helps undercut your irritation with them.

It can also be helpful to remind yourself that you have faults as well.

Guard the gates

Exposing ourselves to unpleasant stimuli also sets us up for experiences of ill will. Hanging out in internet forums where there's a lot of negativity, or watching a lot of outraged discussion on television may make you more prone to ill will.

The Buddha called this practice "guarding the gates of the senses." He compared it to posting guards at the gates of a great city. If you want a peaceful city, then keep vagabonds and ruffians out.

This reminds me of the computer programmers' saying, "Garbage In, Garbage Out," which means that if you put in nonsensical data, then your computer will output nonsensical data. In this case, it's our minds that are the computers. We need to be aware of the fact that certain forms of input lead to the output of angry emotions. If you want to reduce the output of anger, then cut back on the input of anger-generating stimuli.

Summon a Super Hero

Superman or Batman won't swoop down to save you from your anger, but calling to mind a patient friend can help you to act with greater forbearance. One of the problems we face is with having a limited menu of behavioral options to choose from. When you're prone to anger, it's because anger is just so damned easy to use as a tool. You're in a frustrating situation, you reach into your behavioral toolbox, and anger leaps into your hand. Thinking of how someone who is patient and kind might act actually enlarges the range of tools open to you, so that you don't fly off the handle. A while back I read about an interesting study where some students were asked to think about a professor before taking an exam. Those students who thought about the professor actually performed better on the quiz!

Practice self-compassion

This last technique is the one I find to be the most powerful of all. When you get angry, you're actually reacting to a sensation of discomfort. There are stages involved in getting angry. First we see, hear, think, or otherwise perceive something. Then our mind categorizes the perception as wrong, bad, threatening, or otherwise unacceptable. This produces an unpleasant feeling, which is often centered in the solar plexus. And that unpleasant feeling acts as a signal, triggering a response of anger. The anger itself is designed to scare away the thing we identify as being the threat to our well-being. This works great if you're a alpha wolf who's facing a rival for pack supremacy. Snarl just the right way and your rival will slink off, chastened. It works less well in intimate family relationships or at work, where anger creates bad feelings and resentment, or when you're frustrated with a slow website, where anger accomplishes nothing useful at all.

The "gut feeling" part of this process is something we often don't pay attention to, although we should. Our anger, frustration, or rage arises so quickly that we're immediately caught up in angry thoughts and emotions, and usually we don't really acknowledge that we're in pain.

But I've found that if I pay attention to the fact that I'm in experiencing discomfort, then the whole superstructure of angry thinking and angry emotions simply collapses. The whole point of anger is to defend you from feelings of pain by removing their source (the angry wolf snarls at its rival, and the rival backs down). But if you mindfully and compassionately pay attention to your discomfort, then there's no need to get angry. The pain is being dealt with creatively.

Having paid attention mindfully and compassionately to my discomfort, I find not only that my anger subsides entirely, but that I often feel compassion to anyone who may have done something I felt annoyed by — like my children clamoring for my attention when I'm busy, or a driver who's cut me off.

As I pay attention to them, the embers of hurt remind me that just as I suffer and want to find happiness, so others suffer and want to find happiness. I find that the slow burn of hurt, while it lasts, becomes fuel for kindness, rather than for anger.

Anger is nothing more than a strategy for finding happiness in the midst of a challenging world, but it's not a very effective strategy. Mindfulness and compassion work much, much better.

Relaxing Travel with Bus Charter VA

Posted: 12 Dec 2011 11:00 AM PST

Article by Kilianstevens

Virginia is a popular draw for people all over the country. There are a host of delightful attractions that will satisfy a range of different interests. Traveling to Virginia can be an exciting experience for anyone. However, getting to Virginia may not be easy for every traveler. Bus charter VA is available to try to accommodate all sorts of passengers who wish to travel to the beautiful state.

Groups who want to travel to Virginia can take advantage of all the benefits that renting a private coach of bus charter VA has to offer. For one thing, traveling on a bus can be physically easier. Seats on buses are often larger and more relaxing than seats in other types of vehicles. Buses often offer more room in the seats and often offer more leg room than other modes of transportation.

Furthermore, buses often offer entertaining distractions for travelers like DVD movies. These help pass the time and make the trip more enjoyable. Groups traveling with youngsters may especially appreciate these diversions.

Bus charter VA is frequently more reasonable as to expense as compared to air travel. The cost of air travel has gotten so high that a lot of potential travelers simply cannot work paying for a ticket into their vacation budget. Not only are ticket costs high, but passengers are often hit with a number of extraneous fees that make costs go even higher. This is not the case with bus travel. Bus charter VA companies can give travelers accurate quotes for how much the trip they have in mind will cost. That way there are no surprises. When travelers distribute these costs across their group, it is even more obvious how much more affordable bus travel is than air travel.

However, bus travel is not just a good way to travel to a destination. Once travelers have arrived in Virginia, bus travel is also an efficient way to travel within the state. If a group travels to a city, it can be incredibly difficult to keep the group together as they travel through the city. Working out a pla! n to get a large group to different attractions on public transport can terribly hard. This adds stress to everyone on the trip. Organizers have to worry about keeping the group together and on schedule. Travelers have to worry about being left behind and navigating their way through frightfully crowded terminals. Bus charter VA buses can help groups avoid all of this fuss. The bus can take them to all of the places they want to visit in a city.

However, group travel within an entire state can pose a whole host of additional problems. Public transportation from city to city across a state may not be an option. Therefore, bus rental may even become a necessity for groups who want to travel to different points throughout the state. Bus travel lets the group stay together and make a pleasant, worry-free trip to all of their destinations.

America's 10 Happiest Companies: Did Your Job Top the 'Bliss Index'?

Sure, nobody expects their workday to be like a trip to an amusement park, but people are more likely to smile than scowl if they work at one of the happiest companies in the country. Job board and career-coaching website CareerBliss.com ranked the 50 Happiest Companies in America for 2012. The company looked at job reviews from more than 100,000 employees and assigned companies a "Bliss Rating" between one and five. With a score of 4.36, the happiest company in America is… Hilton Worldwide. The hotel and resort operator scored top marks in characteristics like work-life balance, company culture and reputation, and the relationships underlings have with their bosses.

(MORE: Why Are Workers Happy with Fewer Benefits and Longer Hours?)

Next up are engineering and services company Fluor and medical supply manufacturer Johnson & Johnson, each with a score of approximately 4.24.

Luxury retailer Nordstrom and chemical company BASF round out the top five.

The rest of CareerBliss's top 10 were: Centex, the U.S. Air Force, Fidelity Investments, Ericsson and Chevron, and the full list of 50 can be seen here. Overall, the list includes a grab bag of different slices of the economy: financial services, pharmaceutical, technology, telecommunications and media companies all made the list.

Career coach Linda Lupatkin, founder and president of The Imagemakers, Ink! LLC, says that despite the fact that this list comprises a wide range of industries, there are probably some similarities in their respective companies that make employees happy to go to work each morning.

"One thing they have in common is that they value their employees and give workers challenges they can excel at," she says. "I think companies with happy employees tend to understand that there is life outside of work and that they need to work with employees and be flexible," for things like family obligations, Lupatkin says.

Most importantly, companies with happy workers do a good job of establishing communication, explaining what corporate objectives are and how each person is part of those goals, Lupatkin says. They also create a two-way street for communication, so that workers can talk to their bosses about what they like and what they dislike.

(MORE: How to Get Your Dream Job in a Bad Economy)

But even people who don't work at one of the companies on the list can still find ways to work happier, says Heidi Golledge, CEO of CareerBliss. "Everyone can be an innovator," she says. If they're consistently thinking of new ideas, even if their company is not listening, they can do their job in more innovative ways."

"I think it's human nature to focus on the negative sometimes," says Lupatkin. "Focus more on the positive: Ask yourself what you like and how can you expand that?"

Tiniest Babies In US Have Thrived, Researchers Find

Posted: 12 Dec 2011 10:10 AM PST

newborn-baby-sleeping-101119-02

Two babies with the lowest recorded birth weights in the United States have thrived as they've grown older, researchers report.

Researchers from Loyola University Medical Center followed the progress of two girls, identified as Madeline, who weighed 9.9 ounces at birth, and Rumaisa, who weighed 9.2 ounces at birth. When researchers checked the girls' progress at 20 years old and 5 years old respectively, the once-tiny babies were healthy, though they were both small for their age.

The case reports are published today (Dec. 12) in the journal Pediatrics.

The findings reinforce other research that shows that time in the womb is more important for healthy babies than birth weight, said study co-author Dr. Jonathan Muraskas, a professor of pediatrics at Loyola University Medical Center.

"Gestational age, not birth weight, should guide doctors in deciding who is viable," Muraskas said.

Still, extremely premature or extremely low birth weight babies often develop health problems. Parents should be cautioned that not all preemies turn out as well as Madeline and Rumaisa, Muraskas said.

Tiny babies

Madeline was born in 1989 after nearly 27 weeks in the womb and weighed roughly 9.9 ounces, or 0.62 pounds.

An average baby weighs about 8 pounds and stays in the womb about 40 weeks (though babies are considered to be full-term, and not premature, after 37 weeks).

Madeline's mother suffered from severe preeclampsia, a condition during pregnancy in which the mother experiences high blood pressure, among other symptoms.

After a cesarean delivery, doctors treated Madeline for a number of conditions and placed her on mechanical ventilation for 65 days. She was discharged from the hospital after 122 days.

At the time of the report, Madeline was an honor student in her senior year in college, with few health problems. She's still small, weighing only about 70 pounds and standing about 4.5 feet tall.

Rumaisa was born in 2004 after nearly 26 weeks, and weighed 9.2 ounces, or about 0.57 pounds. Researchers say she has the lowest documented birth weight in the world.

Rumaisa's mother, who was carrying twins, had preeclampsia in addition to discordancy, a condition in which one twin is significantly larger than the other.

After a cesarean delivery, doctors placed Rumaisa on mechanical respirator for 50 days. She was discharged from the hospital after 142 days.

While Rumaisa is still small for her age, she's caught up to the tenth percentile of her age group, researchers say. At age five, she weighed about 35 pounds and was about 3.3 feet tall, and attended a traditional kindergarten.

When is a baby too small to survive?

Madeline and Rumaisa illustrate the conundrum physicians face as neonatal science continues to progress, Muraskas said. When is a baby too premature to save?

Both Madeline and Rumaisa received antenatal steroids, which are given to a mother with a high chance of delivering prematurely. The drugs cross the placenta and help the baby's brain and lungs develop.

Even with such advances, a baby born at 23 weeks gestation has a 10 to 20 percent chance of surviving, and has an 80 to 90 percent chance of a major health problem, Muraskas said. But by 27 weeks, a baby has a 90 percent chance of survival and only a 5 percent chance of a debilitating handicap.

"I don't think anybody in the U.S. will resuscitate a baby at 22 weeks," Muraskas said. "At 25 weeks, it's a no-brainer. The survival rate is over 75 … percent."

It's the gray area in between where physicians have to use their judgment. "I use common sense," Muraskas said. "There's no way I would keep a baby alive that is going to be blind, deaf, in a wheelchair and who is not going to know mama and papa."

It's important to acknowledge that some babies considered too small to survive do beat the odds, said Dr. Jonathan Fanaroff, an associate professor of pediatrics at Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital.

But it's also important not to encourage unrealistic expectations in parents, he said. "We always have to be careful," Fanaroff said. "Sometimes they don't survive, even though we do everything we can."

"We need to be up front with them about their particular situation," he continued. "For too long, we've treated classes of babies. Every baby is an individual circumstance. Personalization is important, and so is letting the family have a voice."

Pass it on: The two tiniest babies ever born in the United States have stayed healthy as they've grown older, indicating that that time in the womb is more important than birth weight. However, not all premature babies thrive.

Services of a Life Coach New York change minds:

Posted: 12 Dec 2011 10:00 AM PST

Article by Allen

If we look around we will come across the fact that only 10% of people have enough potential to earn their livelihood the way they want. Rest of the 90% needs to struggle in order to create potential enough to earn the livings and make enough money to live easily. Among these 90% only few of them remain successful in what they try to do. All such people who are unsuccessful need to consult life coach New York. As soon as these people visit the consultant he will ask for the case history. Some of them would say that they are not getting the job. There will be some people saying that they are getting the job of salesman while they are pretty much more educated than this job. These people will have complaint that they are not getting the right job. For example there is a person with an MBA degree but he is not getting the right job. He sees and finds out that people having inferior degrees than him are earning more money and are on better jobs as compared to the ones he gets for him. He will be in the search of the solution to this problem of not getting the right job. The consultant at the Life Coach New York will ask a set of certain questions from the person. He will call the person for almost about a week and meanwhile he will be studying the activities of the person. What the coach will do is that he will place a number of magazines and newspapers in front of the person and will see that how he behaves. For example he will hold a newspaper and then he will leave it. Then he will take the magazine and then he will leave it too and will put his hands on his head. This behavior will depict to the life coach New York that the person is impatient and this reduced level of patience is the reason that he fails to be successful as he cannot wait. Always keep it in mind that if you are a person with good looks, good education as well as great background and you lack patience then you will fail to be successful. Moreover, he may also tell that he was working at a company at a managerial post but he was d! e promot ed due to his carelessness. The life coach New York will ask him to relax. Moreover there are people who say that they used to have a lucky ring and ever since they lost that ring everything is going wrong with them. Thus the coach will give them a new ring saying that this ring is lucky for him, too and they will get out of their psychological phase and will act better. He may come after sometime and would tell the coach that he got new job because of that ring. In the next meeting the life coach New York will tell him that the ring was ordinary but it was his self confidence that he did well in interview and got the job. Buddhist Meditation Provides the Ultimate in Harmony And Tranquility

Posted: 12 Dec 2011 09:00 AM PST

Article by Nigel M

Meditation is very popular with many religions around the world and has been practised for hundreds of years. Buddhism is probably the most well known religion that practises meditation and Nibbbana is the eventual goal for a Buddhist. This is achieved by years of practising Buddhist mediatation. Nibbana is a state of mind and not a physical thing that can be seen, held or bought. Nibbana is achieved by reaching the end of craving and suffering and this is the ultimate goal for someone who practises Buddhist meditation.

Although being a good person, being kind to others and doing good deeds is important to make you a nice person it will not help you to achieve Nibbana. Nibbana is only achieved through Buddhist meditation and following the Buddhist scripturesand writings. To reach full enlightenment you not only need to read the scriptures but more importantly, you need to implement and understand the actual practice. There are 2 different types of Buddhist meditation that are used in the Buddhist religion. These are Samatha and Vipassana.

Samatha translates to mean tranquillity or calmness. This is a state that the pupil is trying to reach whilst meditating. This is done by calming the mind and focusing on one specific thing. There are many things that can help with Samatha meditation like water or a flickering candle. The person meditating can concentrate on the water or candle flame and block out all other outside interferences. Whilst focusing your mind you should also use anapanasati. This is the system of focusing on your breathing. If you do not have any water or candles then you can just use your breathing to help focus your mind. Samatha is more than just focusing; however, they need to get rid of the five vices of ill will, sensual desire, sloth, anxiety and doubt. When this has been reached through this form of Buddhist meditation, great happiness is gained but, Nibbana still has not been achieved. This is where vipassana is necessary.

Vipassana is very different from ! Samatha but is still a vital part of Buddhist meditation and reaching the goal of enlightenment. This method is all about looking at life with a very basic outlook. You need to look at things as they are and you need to acknowledge everything that you do. If you are sweeping the floor, you need to acknowledge to yourself that you are sweeping the floor. This is the beginning stage of vipassana which is bare awareness. By becoming completely aware of everything you do at all times and by focusing your mind by using Samatha you can attain total enlightenment which is the final goal of anyone who is interested in Buddhist meditation.

Most practioners of Buddhist meditation spend their entire lives trying to reach enlightenment, so if you have just started, don't be disheartened if you do not achieve the end goal within a short period of time. Buddhist meditation needs to become part of your life and how you live your life. Although it is a long road to reach the end, enlightenment can be the ultimate spiritual fulfilment.

Consciousness is beyond matter

Posted: 12 Dec 2011 09:00 AM PST

Neuroscience is not without the smell of triumphalism first, that it assumes that consciousness and the brain are one and the same thing which adds up to matter; next, that what neuroscience cannot explain about consciousness doesn't really exist in the first place. It's mumbo-jumbo.

However, the scientific notion of 'matter' may have some problems as we shall see. Matter as physical stuff, which neuroscience generally supposes is the basis of the brain and therefore consciousness, is generally recognized to mean a particular mass that occupies space. On the same track, and with circular reasoning, mass is considered to be the quantity of matter! (So much for any profound truth here.)

Supposedly things like a piano or a human brain are material things composed of matter (you could even say matters). This means they are made up of different grades of matter until we reach the limit of matter, itself, which is massless and space-like. We may also add that the limit of matter, which besides being massless and space-like, is not subject to gravity; does not generate gravity, is not particulate, exhibits no inertia, etc.

Stopping here, are we not permitted to think that maybe 'consciousness' is the limit of matter, also, which means that consciousness is massless, space-like, etc.? This is intended to suggest that the massless, space-like field upon which matter sits, including our brain, is real and is maybe who we really are. Moreover, it is something that neuroscience has no means to either substantially grasp or to understand. So they just ignore the problem of limit and what is beyond it. In Buddhism we don't.

How much this helps our understanding of traditional Zen, which is about the realization of Buddha Mind, is probably very little. But if we decide to buy Zen marketed through Zen teachers who embrace neuroscience like the Upaya Institute and Zen Center, then it becomes important.

We cannot realize the Buddha Mind or Buddha Consciousness by believing the neuroscience dogma that there is no distinction to be made between consciousness and neural activity. This would mean that we are only brains. When these brains finally crap out, experiencing pain, that's it. We have it on good authority from pop Zennists and neuroscientists/neurobiologists that we shall, after we die, never become brains again. It was by accident that we became brains in the first place. However, if we are intrinsically massless and space-like—heaven forbid!—we could tune into another brain!

Yoga- A Spiritual Remedy for Fitness

Posted: 12 Dec 2011 08:00 AM PST

Article by Kiara Winslet

Yoga- A Spiritual Remedy for Fitness

The word yoga is based upon a Sanskrit verb Yuja. It means to connect, to culminate or to concur. It's the culmination of mind and body or the culmination of Jiva and Shiva (soul and the universal spirit). It's also a culmination of Purush and Prakriti (Yin and Yang).

The practice of Yoga bestows a rich and full life on each one who takes it up. The practice of self-restraint, mental strength, genuineness, compassion and selflessness add up to the practice of Yoga. Yoga is not just about the beautiful bodies of diehard yogis and yoginis, although fitness is definitely one of the major payoffs, yoga is a path to that illusive center we are all seeking...it's a path to inner peace. We're being drawn to yoga by the thousands because we need it; we crave what yoga offers and deeply need the body-mind-spirit connection.

You can also offer reduced rates to volunteers or "work for trade" programs to those Yoga students who help you with "domestic chores." You should consult your accountant to make sure everything is legal and "above board." You don't want to violate any child labor laws or set yourself up for any legal problems, so make sure you are following the law "to the letter." Remember also, that laws vary depending upon your location.

When a new student arrives to learn Yoga, he, or she, may not have any previous Yoga experience. When teaching Yoga to new students, it is wise to see it from their viewpoint. Everything is new, including your staff, your system, and your method of teaching Yoga. It is up to the Yoga teacher to make of all these components "user friend

The best way to begin your yoga practice may not be watching a yoga video. Thousands of yoga videos collect dust. And the simplest way may not be to jump into a session that demands too much too fast. The simplest way is to find the right class and the right teacher for you. If you don't know all about the styles of yoga, then discuss your own limitations or conditi! ons with the instructor and ask about how you might fit in to what they offer. Ask about pace, physical demand, level of intensity, etc. Call around. In Dallas there are yoga classes for all levels, ages, and conditions. With just a little research, you're sure to find what's right for you.

Yoga is like sex. You can read about it, hear about it, and watch other people do it, but until you experience it first hand, yourself, you don't really get it. So what's the excitement all about? Why is yoga showing up everywhere from auto ads to executive meetings? Why are airlines presenting it to their passengers and why is it featured on Oprah? Kids are doing it in schools; buff athletes are doing it, even pregnant women and the wheelchair-bound.

With the popularity of yoga rising throughout the western world, you have probably heard about it's healing powers by now. However, you still aren't sure exactly what kind of yoga may be right for your lifestyle. Chances are, you have probably asked everyone you know who practices yoga. While they may have a few suggestions, they may be bias in their decision making when it comes to which type of yoga you should choose.

Benefits of yoga, yoga practice, yoga is like sex

Ultimate Fighting Championship Light Heavyweight champ Jon Jones meditates before big fight

Posted: 12 Dec 2011 08:42 AM PST

Before facing and defeating Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida in the mixed martial arts Ultimate Fighting Championship on Saturday, UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon "Bones" Jones spent some time meditating at a scenic waterfall on the Ball's Falls conservation area on the Niagara Peninsula.

"It was really beautiful but it was so cold out there I could only meditate for about maybe 15 minutes because I didn't want to get sick," Jones said Saturday night after defeating Machida.

"I got a good 12 minutes in but the job was done," he added. "We felt really refreshed and our spirits were lifted on the ride back to the hotel. So mission complete."

Both fighters on Saturday night are into meditation. "The fact that [Machida's] into meditation like I am, the fact that he's a student like I am — he has my utmost respect," Jones said.

This isn't the first time that Jones has been spotted meditating at a scenic spot before a big fight. In March, Jones was en route to Great Falls Historic Park in Paterson, New Jersey, to meditate ahead of his fight against Maurício "Shogun" Rua, along with his coaches Mike Winkeljohn and Greg Jackson. As their driver prepared to drop them off, Jones observed an elderly couple screaming for help. The woman informed Winkeljohn that a man had smashed her car window and run off with her GPS. The 205 lb Jones, along with his two coaches, chased after the robber, caught and tripped him, and held him down until the police arrived.

Personal Life Coaching - The Awakened State of Consciousness

Posted: 12 Dec 2011 07:01 AM PST

Article by SHAYLA TOWNSEND

The term "awakening" has been used as a metaphor since ancient times to describe the evolution of human consciousness. The word Buddha comes from the Sanskrit word Budh, which means "to be awake." Buddha is not the name of a person but rather a state of consciousness. This, of course, implies that the normal "awakened state" of most humans is, spiritually speaking, equivalent to an unawakened, sleeping, or dreaming state of consciousness. Some spiritual teachings refer to this as a "shared hallucination" to describe this normal state of human existence. The spiritual teacher, Eckhart Tolle, calls these individuals "dream-walkers."

Being spiritually awake is sometimes misunderstood. The possession of supernatural abilities, such as channeling, healing, clairvoyance, and other paranormal powers does not necessarily qualify as an awakened state. The individual may or may not be. So then, what actually determines a spiritual awakening? When you stop identifying with your thoughts. A separation of consciousness occurs within the core of your awareness and you realize that there is something much more real than your thoughts, mind, and body.

The mind controls the physiological condition and health of the body. When thoughts of fear are released by the mind, the fight-or-flight, sympathetic nervous system responds by the release of adrenalin, cortisol, dopamine, and the contraction of muscles. Stress is created because the body believes what the mind is saying. Fifty thousand years ago, when we were evading saber-toothed tigers, this survival mechanism in the body was most effective at keeping us protected. However, in modern humans, this primitive response is largely unnecessary, unless you're a soldier fighting in a combat zone.

When you don't allow things to be as they are -- the mind forms judgments, opinions, and distortions about a situation or event based on preconditioned, reactive patterns. When you so completely identify with your own compulsive thoughts about what is happeni! ng aroun d you, your sense of survival becomes dependent upon how well you can resolve your perceived problem. Subsequently, your entire sense of self -- your entire existence -- is reduced to the level of your conflict or personal problem. The drama becomes who and what you are, what you perceive yourself to be. And when this happens, all sense of inner peace and tranquility is replaced with panic, anxiety, and fears of impending doom.

The Buddha state of consciousness, on the other hand, is when you do not identify the Self with what is happening around you. This is the enlightened state of being. Situations occur. They are acknowledged, accepted, and addressed, in that order. They are not dismissed, nor are they blown out of proportion. There is no reaction, resistance, or emotional violence to our daily challenges. As a result, they are not turned into problems. When you are awake, you put the Self first. This means that no thing (nothing) that happens is allowed to control, dictate, define, or reduce the Self in any way, whatsoever. The awakened Self remains in a place of peace, balance, and tranquility.

10 Happiest Places to Work: Is Your Job on the List?

Spiritual Life Coaching - The Now Is All There Is

Posted: 12 Dec 2011 06:00 AM PST

Article by SHAYLA TOWNSEND

One thing is for certain (besides death and taxes), life is always now. Whatever you experience, whatever happens, whatever you feel, think, or do -- it's still now. When I write this, it is now. When you read this, it is now. When things happen tomorrow or next week, it will still be now. Nothing happens outside of the Now. So, you can't argue with the simple truth: Now is all there is.

Unfortunately, the dysfunctional behavior of most of humanity results from ignoring this seemingly obvious truth. The current human state of consciousness does not enjoy living in the Now. In fact, it does mostly everything it can to avoid the Now altogether. Who has time? Well, the ego certainly doesn't. People are too concerned about what's about to happen, has happened, or something that may or may not happen, rather than what is happening now. You've seen them. They are the ones who are constantly on their mobile smart phones, texting away, sending little glyphs to someone who, like them, is also ignoring the Now. And all of this goes on in a desperate, exhausting, and counterproductive attempt to reduce the Now to a means to an end.

When you are not living in the Now, you tend to miss the entire essence of your life. You become stuck in a dreamworld of images, concepts, perceptions, judgments, and opinions that, summed up, define a story. And this story becomes you. All the drama and negative emotions that go along with your story are also perceived as who you are. And so you become disconnected from the joy of life that resides only in the present moment. The mind races forward and backward about this situation, that person, what he said, what she said, what might happen if he does this or she does that, and none of this can tell you who you are. And 99.99% of the time, if you did absolutely nothing, all your perceived "problems" would completely dissolve if you could just learn to be still, and pay attention to what is happening right now.

Most people, when asked, "How may problems do you! have ri ght now?" They will respond with a bombast describing all their problems. Little do they realize, however, that very few problems ever exist in the Now. Why? Because problems are convoluted and have lots of stuff attached to them. They have stories behind them. If you've ever had to listen to someone tell you about their problems, it's never a short story. It's always "complicated." The truth is, unless you're being attacked by a wild Boar in the forest, or an alligator in the swamp, then you too, have no problems right now. None. And if you've convinced yourself that you do, then your consciousness is rooted in the egoic mind, which means you're living in the past and future -- neither of which exist.

So, instead of avoiding the Now, begin inviting presence into your life a little more each day. When you do, you will stop struggling to reach a point in the non-existent future where there is greater security, aliveness, abundance, love, or joy, and will become aware that those things already make up the essence of who you are.

Dennis Adams Seminars proudly presents a dynamic four volume series designed to bring into play the advancement of our consciousness by learning about and activating our higher selves.

This series is unique due to the fact that each master was recorded between 7,000 and 12,000 ft high atop Mt. Shasta, so the insights used from a high, clear mountain view are very powerful.

Each CD covers different subject material which can inspire our Being to grow. By using simple everyday tools and techniques we can lift our consciousness and dwell in the presence of God.

The content of these CDs basically take the things we say and do continuously and allows these things to serve us simply by understanding how they work and transform your everyday life into a relaxing and fun experience.

Excerpt: "Let's kind of put healing together. Have you told your feeling body that it deserves to feel better? Do you know by telling your feeling body something, it's easier than telling the physical body? You see, if you can tell the feeling body to feel it, you know what happens? You get past the personality and you get past the ego, and you just feel things. And you begin to feel inside of yourselves that you're really worthy. And you begin to feel inside that you should really beat the sickness."

From Zazen to Zamadhi

Posted: 12 Dec 2011 08:43 AM PST

In the early history of Zen, monks practiced zazen in the form of "constant sitting" (常坐) as a means to hopefully achieve samadhi. Zazen was not done for its own sake which, incidentally, is the practice of Soto Zen, but as a means to achieving samadhi.

Other routes to samadhi, however, could be taken such as "constant walking," or "walking and sitting," and finally samadhi could possibly be attained through "neither walking nor sitting." Much later, answering a koan might also effectively bring about both samadhi and prajñâ (= wisdom in the sense of distinguishing absolute reality from finite reality).

In the Vedic dictionary, the Niruki says that samadhi occurs "When the mind is fixed for understanding the self." Put into a Meditation context, samadhi occurs when we, as intrinsically pure Mind, directly cognize ourself.

To get more of an idea of samadhi, a commentary to the Avatamsaka Sutra, describing the "Ocean Seal Samadhi" goes as follows:

"The 'Ocean Seal' is the fundamental mental awareness of true Thusness (tathata). When delusion ends, Mind is clear and myriad forms simultaneously appear. It [Mind] is like the ocean. Due to wind there arise waves [Mind phenomena]; if the wind stops the [Mind] ocean is calm and all images can reflect in it."

Zen's Fourth Patriarch, Tao-hsin (580-651 ) speaks of a "one mode samadhi" (I-hsing san-mei) in his Ju-tao an-hsin yao fang-pien men 入道安心要方便 門 (Door for Entering the Path and Calming the Mind). (Below, Wen shu shuo po jo ching refers to the Manjusri Sutra.)

"The fundamental teachings of mine are [1] the mind of all the Buddhas is the First Principle, based on the Lankavatara Sutra, and [2] I-hsing san-mei means that the mind which is aware of the Buddha is the Buddha, whereas [the mind which] does false thinking is the ordinary person, based on the Wen shu shuo po jo ching.

The Wen shu shuo po jo ching says:

Manjushri asked the World Honored One the meaning of i-hsing san-mei. The Buddha replied: "Ultimate reality (dharmadhatu) has a unified form (i-hsing). Fixing your awareness on ultimate reality is called i-hsing san-mei. If sons and daughters of noble families want to enter i-hsing san-mei, they should first listen to the Perfection of Wisdom [teaching] and cultivate their practice in terms of what it says. Later they will be able to enter i-hsing san-mei, and their awareness will be like ultimate reality: free from retrogression, indestructible, inconceivable, lacking obstructions and without form. Sons and daughters of noble families who want to enter into i-hsing san-mei but cannot, should stay in an enclosure empty of distractions, and give up all chaotic thoughts. Without grasping onto outward appearances, they should concentrate their minds on a particular Buddha and exclusively recite his name. By properly facing in the direction of the Buddha, having an upright body, and being able to continuously think on one Buddha thought after thought, means that in this contemplation they are able to see all Buddhas of the past, present, and future. Why?

"Contemplating the measurelessness and boundlessness of the merit of one Buddha is the same as the merit of countless Buddhas since they are non dualistic and inconceivable. The Buddha's Dharma is without distinctions. Everything conforms to the One True Suchness to achieve the most perfect realization. [Therefore,] everyone will attain unlimited merit and unlimited abilities [by contemplating the merits of one Buddha]. Those who would enter i-hsing san-mei in this way exhaustively know ultimate reality and the undifferentiated forms of Buddhas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges."

Every aspect of the mind and body, even lifting a foot and putting it down, always is a place of enlightenment. All of your behavior and actions are enlightenment" (trans. David W. Chappell).

  • One fine grained Mala for the wrist
  • Each bead is 10 to 12mm with a natural stain, preserving the rich wood grain
  • Use for counting mantras, prayers, mediations or expressing personal beliefs and style
  • Bring tranquility into your life with natural wood beads
  • Meticulously hand crafted in Guangdong for local religions
This richly grained wooden Mala braclet is hand crafted in the Pearl River Delta. No two are identical due to the fine natural patterns in the wood. Each has true character and unique qualities, which can only be produced through careful selection of quality woods and traditional hand rubed stains. Mala Beads are a Buddhist tool of meditation. They are moved in rhythm with your breath and mantra for meditation. The action of moving the beads keeps sleep and distraction at bay and incorporates more of the whole body in the meditation. Each time the mantra is repeated, the fingers move to the next bead. The mala is meant to focus the mind and promote clear thought about the meaning of the mantra as it is chanted. Schools of thought, from India, to Tibet, to China recommend different ways of holding and counting Mala beads, however these are local idiosyncrasies. Wrist malas can be used for short simple meditations, as fashion accessories, or as a constant reminder of lessons learned during meditation.

Looking into the void...and waking up

Posted: 12 Dec 2011 08:44 AM PST

Recently I got an email from someone who resonated with my take on death, not-existing for eternity, and the virtually certain unfortunate/fortunate fact that when we die, we're gone forever (aside from the atoms that make up our time-limited assemblage into a living entity).

I asked the guy, Yeager St. John, if I could share his thoughts. "Sure," he emailed back. Here they are.

Hey Brian,

I came across your website, "Church of the Churchless" and must say, bravo. I have only read a few of your posts, but have enjoyed every bit. I came across your "death and the primal fear of non-existence" post and what you said really resonates with experiences I have had. I have never seen someone explain exactly how I felt.

It's not so much the act of dying as much as, "what about everything that was before and will come after," thoughts on eternity and infinity, where the universe is, what it all means, etc. I too have had the experience of looking back into the void, as if a curtain was pulled away suddenly. I feel like so many people have not realized this both unfortunate and fortunate truth about ourselves.

Instead so many people seem to concern themselves with material things in order to feel happy and deny the fundamental nature of their existence and being, using other things (monetary goals, religion, material things...) to distract themselves from their own existence and coming to terms with it.

Sometimes I think it is only the smarter people who ever have this epiphany of life, and that we are also the only ones who are able to deal with it and actually "wake up" to ourselves. Just like yourself, I do not seem to have "beat" the feeling of....I don't even know how to describe it. There are no words for the emptiness and fear that comes to you when you realize non-existence, as I'm sure you know.

But, I have found that being "woken up" to this fact of life and death has made me appreciate all that I have, which is to say, all that I have in the here and now. I have begun the process of living and being aware of the current moment and just doing what I can to be happy, which is mostly controlling my outlook on life, as that is the only thing I am completely in control of.

I don't let petty things bother me, because I've seen behind the curtain and don't fall for the social distractions. It's not to say that I live a perfect happy life and wake up every day happy, smiling, etc.

I still have off days, I still dislike certain things, I still get angry, sad, and a whole range of emotions. But I remember to ground myself. To remain in this moment, the only moment I have - and enjoy every bit of the eternal here and now. I take bigger risks, my levels of anxiety and fear in every-day life have reduced, and continue to do so, because I realize it's all a big game and really there is nothing to lose.

Listening to Alan Watts, Carl Sagan and other philosophers and mystics has really helped as well. It seems that we are all in this together, and even if we don't really understand, it's ok. Whatever this is will keep on going. I might not understand my purpose and existence, but like chaos theory proves, every little thing seems to matter and influence everything.

I hope I've made myself somewhat clear, hahah. I tend to get jumbled when I think on this matter; my brain races and all the thoughts I have inside come gushing out.

Either way, I just wanted to let you know there are are other deep thinkers out there, curious and aware about ourselves. Keep living and enjoying the here and now, and may your life be thick with experience.

Cheers,

Yeager

Since Yeager shared a link to his web site, I browsed around a bit. Checking out his videos, my eye was caught by the title "Dreams," and an image that said when did we forget our dreams? Great question.

What Your Minds Really needs As Mlm professional

Posted: 12 Dec 2011 02:00 AM PST

Article by Shola Abitogun

Please while you read this; realize that i'm not a Yoga Expert, Buddhist or any of these people that examine people. It's definitely not some hypnotherapy crap. But I was paying attention to one of the inspiring Christian program on tv last night and the preacher on the TV was preaching about what your mind really needs when he was discussing the laws of the mind. It is very suitable to Mlm as well as business normally. Therefore i felt the call to share it with you.

We as Mlm professional unfortunately do not talk enough about the importance of mentality. Mentality simply means the set of mind or the status of your mind. The thoughts are Easily impacted by our situations, our past, what we read, that which you watch, that which you say plus just about all. It is very important that people know how the mind works. Understanding the thoughts are an ongoing procedure. Nevertheless, you must start the procedure right now in the event you haven't. This is why Network marketing leads system pro is hands down the most effective MLM System on the planet as there are hundred (or else thousands) hrs of mindset trainings at the back office from the best. Off course there are the technical trainings back there.

Your Mind Requires A Focus. What ever scenario you're now in your life, it's because of past expertise as well as experiences. However, so that you can advance in everyday life and in your Multilevel marketing MLM business, it is required for your mind to Look Forward. Looking or thinking backward of the bad as well as the positives is nothing but a distraction. The past cannot be corrected. You might CHOOSE to learn from it. Focus on that thing, that life style that you want and NOT the past that you really don't want. This is where forgiveness requires to be discussed (I am sounding like a preacher so I will stop.)

Your mind Should have An Instruction. You being a human being should be aware that your mind really wants to master who you are. Don't give in to your Mind. Manage it. ! You are certainly not your mind. You must learn how to use your mouth to teach the mind what to think about. Now you understand the full point of statements and affirmations. Statements and affirmations are not meant for mouth exercise. They are supposed to instruct the mind how to proceed plus think of. Mind Is supposed TO SERVE You NOT The opposite way round. Your affirmations must be precise. For example, if you market gold as well as silver with Numis Network, you might say: I will be a Six Star in 8 months. Notice that the affirmation is specified within value plus time precise. When you say that everyday in the morning, you are instructing your mind.

The mind Should have An Idol. You need to have somebody that you follow. Every productive individuals have someone that they look up to. When I say hero, I am not saying that you do every thing that they do. You still have to be who you are plus your uniqueness is VERY important. You need someone that the mind thinks about either as motivation or no matter what. It could be your upline or it could be any enterprise guru out there. Whenever you sit down to watch a Vh1 reality show, suddenly your mind will speak to you gently; would Mentor A watch this show Or do some prospecting?" You mind will think of that hero.

The mind Needs To be Fed: Well I am not speaking about the Burger Kings or McDonalds here. The mind requires to be fed constantly with no matter what you want it to be pondering about it. Now do not hold the picture of Mr trump or your upline within your living area. That is definitely Gross..Lol. Utilize the picture of your dream car as your desktop background picture. Go plus test drive your favorite luxury car at the car dealership. Travel around your perfect neighborhood. The easiest method to feed your mind is through sight. I am not a big fan of reality show, but MTV cribs might be a good way to feed the mind. Go on you-tube and also watch the profile of the Network marketing top earners. Give your mind something. Feed the mind somet! hing pos itive. What you think is so important because your thought is the cause, events are the effect.
