Sex, exercise and the arts make us happiest — or so says an iPhone survey

Posted: 10 Dec 2011 01:02 PM PST

Sex makes people happiest — enough said. Exercise, with its release of endorphins, comes in second place. But the third-best activity for happiness, according to a British iPhone survey, is a night at the theater, a concert or a dance performance — and other arts ranked in the next four places on this list.

"The Book of Mormon": Almost as good as sex? (Joan Marcus - AP)

The Mappiness Project is a survey conducted via iPhone that collects data about where — and when, and why — people are happy. Participants who have downloaded the Mappiness app were prompted to input information about how happy they were, and what made them feel that way, at random intervals, and their phone's GPS relayed information about their location. Researchers George MacKerron and Susana Mourato of the London School of Economics have encouraged more than 46,000 people across Britain and the world to submit more than 3 million answers, according to the Mappiness Blog.

Though MacKerron hasn't published all of the results of the survey yet, he said in an e-mail that these were the top activities that participants reported made them happy, controlled for factors like companionship, time of day, day of week, and any concurrent activities:

1. Intimacy, making love

2. Sports, running, exercise

3. Theatre, dance, concert

4. Singing, performing

5. Exhibition, museum, library

6. Hobbies, arts, crafts

As theaters struggle to find new audiences and art organizations seek sources of funding, this is a marketing campaign that practically writes itself: "The arts: Almost as good as sex!"

Nevertheless, MacKerron writes, "I'm afraid our data can't tell us *why* going to the theatre makes people happy, or why they don't go there more often."

Zen in the jaws of the lion

From Vegas Seven Magazine

December 8th, 2011
Photos by Hamesh Shahani
The MGM lion, that great golden idol of so many earthy desires, long dominated the view from the Zen Center's old home in an industrial park on Dean Martin Drive. Not your typical ambiance. And yet, when Zen master Seung Sahn paid a visit, the renowned Korean founder of the Kwan Um school declared: "The jaws of the lion is a wonderful place to practice Zen!"
"What he was saying was that Vegas is wonderful because it's not hiding anything," says the Zen Center's abbot, Thom Pastor. "'Desire mind'—sex, drugs, gambling, alcohol—all of it is right here. There's no pretense. No trying to hide it or veil it, it just is what it is. [Zen master Seung Sahn] told me, 'If you can find your center here, then going anywhere is no problem.'"
We talk cross-legged on the floor of the Zen Center's new digs, pretty little whitewashed buildings with blue trim at Harmon and Eastern avenues. The center moved here in 2009, thanks in part to the collapse in housing prices (call it karma). It has 18 pine trees and a sculpted pool out back (although one of the new waterfalls is on the fritz). Inside, members of the 50-person congregation chant, bow and sit in silent meditation. The room is simple, though not austere, and is dominated by a large golden statue—not the MGM lion, but the Buddha in his serene pose.
Pastor, 65, has a wide grin and a shorn head. His presence is at once avuncular and intimidating. He has a tendency to whack interlocutors on the thigh with a short stick, especially when they're trying to take accurate notes.
This is Las Vegas' very own Zen master—and his path to the Buddha goes straight through the heart of Sin City.
In a previous incarnation, Pastor was a master sax player (among 10 other woodwinds). He toured the world with the likes of Humperdinck, Anka and Tom Jones before settling down in 1973 to spend 15 years on the Strip playing behind Frank Sinatra and other headliners as part of the Caesars Palace house orchestra.
In Buddhism, a bodhisattva is a being who attains enlightenment but decides to stick around here for a while to help out the rest of us bums. Now, I'm not saying Sinatra was one of these guys, but he did help Pastor down the path, in a manner of speaking. Pastor started to explore Zen as an antidote to those swingin' nights on the Strip, when he was seeking an alternative to the musician's traditional stress-reliever, the between-show cocktail. And he found that high-stakes musicianship can be good training for Zen.
Case in point: his first rehearsal with Sinatra at the old Circus Maximus. The famously temperamental Chairman of the Board only played with musicians he trusted, so when he noticed a new face in the woodwinds, Sinatra suddenly announced that he'd be conducting the first set of tunes himself. "Frank came and put one foot up on the riser right in front of me and said, 'OK, fellas, here it is,' and started conducting," Pastor says. Sinatra stayed there, looming over him and reading along with his music while he played. After getting through the tricky intro to "I've Got the World on a String," Sinatra passed the baton back to the conductor; the lead alto leaned over to Pastor and said, "Congratulations, you just passed the audition."
That audition, a one-on-one gut-check with the big guy, is not too unlike the Zen tradition of "dharma combat," in which the student must respond intuitively, with moment-mind, to challenges posed by the master. In 2002, Pastor survived dharma combat with five Zen masters, the last step in a 20-year process of study, retreats and training to become only one of 40 master dharma teachers worldwide in the Kwan Um School of Zen.
Pastor doesn't view his new life as a break with his old one—he still finds time to perform in addition to abbot duties here and in centers in Madison, Wis., and Fairbanks, Alaska, and he just cut an album,Sleeping Lions, at the Straight Up Martini Lounge with his jazz outfit, B3 Conspiracy. Besides, Buddhism is about the oneness of all things, and that includes Las Vegans and all its denizens, too. And with times tough and looking to get tougher, a lot of us could do with a dose of the dharma. In a delightfully ironic metaphor, Pastor calls Buddhism the "Rolls-Royce teaching" about how to be happier with less. All you need is "moment-mind—not getting lost in your thinking, but being present in this moment."
That is the "bone of the teaching" that runs through all forms of Buddhism, and it fits the Vegas experience perfectly. From my new, more enlightened perspective, the Strip looks less like a Buddhist obstacle course and more like a training course. Anyone here can see that nothing is permanent, not a hot streak, nor the city itself. And we are bombarded by reminders that grasping is endless—the promise of this place is that there will always be more to desire. If you are convinced that a jackpot will end your suffering, you will likely depart burdened with bad karma and calls from collection agents. Instead, just open your eyes and take it all in: You'll probably have a decent time whether you hit blackjack or go bust.
"Gain and loss are just opposites," Pastor says. "Winning the lottery or losing all your money at the craps table—both have no meaning. The fan above you is whirring. The floor is brown. The Buddha is gold. That's my teaching to you. No more, no less. If you get caught in gain and loss, then you are a slave to your mind and to all things. If you attain pure mind, then complete freedom is available to you."
The Zen master falls silent, then chuckles. "Doesn't help the economy here, though!"

What Does Success in Meditation Depends Upon?

Posted: 10 Dec 2011 12:00 PM PST

Article by Tomislav Tomic

Since the very first time I came across meditation, I realized that I was dealing with something special and extraordinary. Although I did not have the slightest idea as to what was happening while I meditated, I still practiced meditation regularly and I was experiencing wonderful things. I would often take part in different courses and workshops dealing with meditation, where I met many people who had a similar interest.

However, even after a short while I noticed one thing that was never quite clear to me. Many people were attending the workshops in the hope that a new technique they had come to learn would give them better results than the one they were practicing until then. They felt that the responsibility for their "progress in meditation" lay in the meditation technique itself.

In time I began to realize that, even though we had seemingly similar interests in attending various conferences, the real reasons for our coming there were quite different.

I would come and attend such conferences expecting to learn something new that would help me on my way of meditation and that would help improve my entire understanding of the process of meditation. The majority of other people, and I realized that from the conversation that we had together, were searching for a different method that would help them be more "successful in meditation" than with the method they had been using thus far.

If you feel like one of those people who are constantly searching for new methods of meditation because the method which they are currently practicing is not providing them with satisfactory results, you can be sure that in 99% of all cases the lack of good results of meditation is not a result of the method you are using, but in your approach.

Yes, you understood well - the issue is your approach. I understand that each method is characteristic for their different emphases, but still I say that the main reason why a person is not making sufficient progress in meditation is their lack! of comm itment to meditation.

By "lack of commitment" I do not mean spending several hours a day meditating, but rather the very approach to meditation. If you are completely committed to something, that means that your attitude toward it says, "I will do this no matter what. Other options are of no interest to me, period."

With an approach like that and twenty minutes of meditation a day, you will be getting far better results than if you spend several hours a day meditating without the same kind of approach.

Time in itself is pretty relative term, and even more so when you enter the realm of meditation which happens, in essence, when we get connected to the vibration level in which time definitely has no existence.

Nobody can guarantee that you will have more intense meditational experiences when meditating for ten minutes as opposed to spending two hours in meditation. The logic which is applied in everyday life loses its adequacy when it comes to meditation.

Meditation reveals its secrets only to those who are truly committed to it. And trust me, this secret has nothing to do with the method you are using nor with how many minutes or hours you spend meditating.

So, if you are not happy with the current results of your meditation, instead of focusing on a new method that will help you get better results, you should rather be focusing on what it is that is hindering you from becoming fully committed to meditation. Question yourself. Let those questions be present in your mind until you feel that the right answer is coming, and when you feel it coming, stop asking questions and be open to receive an answer.

When you feel that you have received an answer, apply it immediately. Do not delay it for even a moment.

Repeat the same procedure every time you feel that there is some sort of "brake" in your progress.

All that we wish to experience is in existence even now. If it were not, we would not be able to wish to experience it. The only reason why we still do n! ot have the experience that we are striving for is our approach.

Change your approach and your experience will change as well. Of course, here it applies to approaching meditation, but it can be applied to other areas in life just as well.

Uncover The Mystery Of A Zen Garden

Posted: 10 Dec 2011 11:00 AM PST

Article by Peter Finch

For all those who know little about gardening, Zen garden is a term used for Japanese rock gardens, moisture-free, made-of-stones, dry kind of gardens - To a certain extent this is correct, but giving due consideration to the other concepts associated with the word Zen, the phrase Zen garden has a profound philosophical impact. It is a special form of artistic gardens so intense, that the great mathematicians and neurologists too have attempted to explain the idea.

Zen. The Mystery

Now that your curiosity is aroused, I will try to explain more about this type of garden and its impacts on visitors. The first question that needs to be answered is, what is Zen? Many associate it with Japanese Buddhism. Well, this again is partly true, and indeed Zen Gardens originated from Buddhist monasteries and temples around 1300 AD by Zen priests and artists, prominently Muso Soseki. Some people think that Zen is an interpretation of the Buddhist concept of enlightenment, and this may be close to the truth as well. Zen plays an important role in many Japanese concepts and aspects.

Actually Zen means waking up to the present moment. That is, perceiving this moment exactly as it is, rather than through the filter of our ideas, opinions, etc. And this is what is reflected in a Zen garden.

Examples

- Royanji Temple in northwest Kyoto, Japan. - Nanzenji Zen Garden in Kyoto, Japan.

The Philosophical Impact

A Zen garden is an aesthetic arrangement of stones with little vegetation, water or other elements at a first glance. But on careful observation, we understand that they represent the elaborate equilibrium of contraries and the apprehension of the world as a dialect continuum.

For example, how can one express nothingness 'mu', more dramatically than by taking water out of a garden? Zen garden, is thus a metaphorical representation of the concepts of Zen. The exclusion of water is not its denial, it is in fact a more potent assertion as it is done metaphorically.

The significant aspect of a Zen garden is that the rocks form subliminal images of objects like trees, lakes, ponds etc. which can not be perceived while looking consciously at them, but the subconscious mind is able to observe a subtle association between the rocks. While viewing, the distinction between subject & object, and viewer & viewed is blurred. This results in the garden being a source of strength, courage, fortitude, tranquility, serenity, peace.

Another specialty is that none of of them have been created by one person, epitomizing the aspect of parts forming a whole.

Although these gardens have been engulfed with controversies and criticism, there is no denying their impact on the viewers and the inherent creativity.

The philosophy of these gardens can be summarized in the poetics of Karesansui: ' Flower does not Talk but a Rock has the Voice of Water.'

Canadians sixth-happiest in world (What’s Norway got?)

Why we're happy
Depending on how you define it, Canadians are the sixth-happiest people in the world.

According to the Legatum Institute's recent 2011 Prosperity Index rankings, Canada ranks behind Norway, Denmark, Australia, New Zealand and Sweden, and ahead of Finland, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the United States in the top 10.

The group looks at a range of measures, including the economy, entrepreneurship and opportunities for that, governance, education, health, safety and security, personal freedom (where Canada ranks first) and "social capital." This is seen as painting a picture of overall quality of life. Such readings, which go well beyond the traditional measures of gross domestic product, are often referred to as happiness indexes.

Forbes has a delightful take on this today, noting the resource nature of Norway, Australia and Canada. For Norway, whose GDP per capita is $54,000 (U.S.), it's the third consecutive year for the number one spot.

"Cynics say Norway's ranking is a fluke, that it's a boring, godless (just 13 per cent go to church), homogeneous place to live, with a massive welfare state bankrolled by high taxes," Christopher Helman of Forbes writes. "Without massive offshore reserves of oil and gas that it exports to the world through state-controlled Statoil, Norway's GDP would be far smaller."

Mr. Helman also looks at what the top countries share.

"They are electoral democracies, for one. People are naturally happier when they feel like they have a say in how their countries are run. They also have abundant civil liberties (consider decriminalized drugs and prostitution in the Netherlands), though if your happiness is a warm gun you'll be happier in the U.S. than in Europe."

(The warm gun was a reference to John Lennon's lyrics.)

What the Iron Lady wants
Angela Merkel heads into tomorrow's crucial EU summit with demands her colleagues probably won't accept. Thus, a stalemate that could yet again leave the Old World with no solution to its debt crisis.

The German chancellor has been a driving force in this two-year-old saga, trying to impose her discipline on a divided Europe. That's not to suggest it's a bad thing, just that her repeated use of nein sets the stage for another lame outcome in Brussels.

"It is highly unlikely that Merkel will get her way - the most likely outcome is more muddling through," said CMC Markets analyst Michael Hewson.

As The New York Times puts it today, Ms. Merkel will be praised if the euro zone is saved, but damned should the currency union collapse, with the fallout felt around the world.

Ms. Merkel has had her way so far, leading a charge that has meant sweeping and harsh austerity measures among the weaker nations and standing firm against calls for a eurobond and for the European Central Bank to be more than she wants it to be.

Ms. Merkel and her partner in this effort, France's Nicolas Sarkozy, are now pushing for treaty changes for the entire EU, or at the very least the 17-member monetary union and any other country that wants to join in. Their plan would see offending countries penalized for exceeding a 3 per cent deficit-to-GDP mark.

"Alongside the single currency, a strong economic pillar is indispensable, building on enhanced governance to foster fiscal discipline as well as stronger growth and enhanced competitiveness," they said in a letter to EC president Herman Van Rompuy.

And here's a key line in their letter, one that goes to the heart of a nation's sovereignty: "A sequence of interventions of increasing intensity into euro area member states' rights should be allowed as a focused response to continued infringement. Steps and sanctions proposed or recommended by the commission should be adopted by the council unless a qualified majority of the euro area nember states decides otherwise."

Until today, investors had been upbeat in the run-up to the summit, believing the EU leaders will actually make inroads at the two-day meeting. Reports yesterday also suggested that officials were looking at the idea of running two bailout mechanisms at the same time, though Germany ruled that out today. That took some of the steam out of the rally.

A German official also scaled back expectations for the summit.

"We don't know the name of the German official whose comments have torpedoed this morning's rally, but he has certainly provided a nasty shock to markets," said Yusuf Heusen, sales trader at IG Index in London.

"Essentially, this anonymous official has ruled out the idea that the euro zone can get away with enforcing budget discipline via minor changes to legislation, which had been mooted by president Van Rompuy," he said.

"Instead, Germany have insisted on a full-blown treaty change, which opens up a whole Pandora's Box of problems, not the least of which is getting new treaties past national parliaments without triggering referenda. In addition, the official said that Berlin was less optimistic about making real progress this Friday than it had been a week ago."

Observers have already warned against expecting too much from this summit, and some like Ms. Merkel's steadfast refusal to give way.

"What has markets lacking conviction is that Europe is at it again, as the cycle of dubious and largely already attempted proposals being tossed up only to be shot down by Germany extends into the day before the start of the latest EU Summit," said Derek Holt of Scotia Capital.

"That said, I frankly like some aspects of Germany's steadfast refusal to seek solutions oriented toward fixing debt problems by compounding more of it on to the root problem and kicking the can down the road U.S.-style."

Separately today, banks gobbled up more than $50-billion (U.S.) from the European Central Bank under the lower costs unveiled last week by several major central banks. That's well above what markets had expected, observers noted, as 34 banks took advantage compared to just four last month.

"Some would view it as negative that so many banks need to turn to the central bank for [U.S. dollar] funding (at what is still a penal price relative to interbank rates) but we already know that European banks are stressed," said currency strategist Elsa Lignos of RBC in London.

"The fact that banks are now accessing less penal [U.S. dollar] funding from the ECB (and have the collateral to do so) is a positive step," she added.

At the same time, Germany pulled off a successful debt auction.

Harris had minority support
Canada's Magna International Inc. MG-T says its chairman, the former Ontario premier Mike Harris, got only a minority of shareholder support for his re-election at the company's annual meeting earlier this year.

The company has for the first time disclosed the result of voting at its annual meeting in May, which shows strong opposition to the re-election of Mr. Harris and two other directors who served on a special committee that oversaw a controversial 2010 deal to buy out the dual-class voting shares held by Magna founder Frank Stronach for more than $865-million (U.S.).

The minority support for the re-election of the three members of Magna's special committee suggests many shareholders were indeed concerned about the terms of the deal, even though they ultimately voted in favour of it, The Globe and Mail's Janet McFarland reports.

Enbridge hikes dividend
Canada's Enbridge Inc. ENB-T today boosted its quarterly dividend by 15 per cent, to 28.25 cents and projected 2012 adjusted earnings per share of $1.58 to $1.74.

Chief executive officer Patrick Daniel described 2011 as a year of "tremendous progress on many fronts," and expects next year's earnings will reap the benefits from its various moves, including the recent deal for half of the Seaway Pipeline System.

"Over the course of the year we reached agreement with our Liquids Pipelines shippers on the 10-year Competitive Toll Settlement (CTS), and secured an additional $6-billion of attractive growth opportunities across our existing businesses of liquids pipelines, gas pipelines and distribution, and green energy as well as into new platforms including power transmission and the Canadian midstream gas sector," he said in a statement.

Cenovus sees production boost
Canada's Cenovus Energy Inc. CVE-T expects a 21-per-cent boost in oil production next year as it hikes its spending by about 23 per cent.

Cenovus, formed from a breakup of Encana Corp. ECA-T, said today it plans to spend between $3.1-billion and $3.4-billion. Oil production will rise "significantly," it added, as its Christina Lake oil sands operation more than doubles its average volumes amid an expansion, which will be followed by another expansion expected to begin producing at the end of the year.

Cenovus expects cash flow to be between $2.9-billion and $3.5-billion in 2012, comparable to this year. WHile operating cash flow from refining and natural gas will be lower, it will rise largely because of higher volume and better prices.

"We've once again set ambitious milestones to measure our progress this coming year which, based on our track record, shareholders can be confident we'll strive to achieve," said chief executive officer Brian Ferguson. "We've already been able to move forward some of the timelines established in our long range plan and we have every intention of continuing to meet or exceed the commitments we've made."

RIM must change OS name
Research In Motion Ltd. RIM-T can't seem to catch a break.

Stung by bad news over the past week or so, RIM has now been forced to change the name of its next operating system from BBX after a U.S. federal court barried it from using the name at its Asian developer conference because it infringed on another company's copyright.

The company said via an official Twitter account that it will now call the operation system "BlackBerry 10," The Globe and Mail's Iain Marlow reports.

Analysts see the release of that software to be a make-or-break moment for the tech giant, as it tries to steady declining market share around the world and release compelling devices that can better compete with sleek devices running Google Inc.'s Android operating system.

Officials urge asset sales
Senior officials at Transport Canada recommend the department consider scaling back and divesting some assets in this era of restraint.

A briefing document to Transport Minister Denis Lebel, obtained by Bloomberg News under access-to-information, doesn't say what assets might be sold, but that the department should study its programs and make "tough choices and trade-offs."

Mr. Lebel's ministry is reponsible for 11 Crown corporations, 17 port authorities, 21 airport authorities, and other entities. Ottawa, of course, is looking to slash costs.

"Increasing financial constraints on governments at all levels combined with new and emerging demands on Canada's transportation system mean the era of TC being 'all things to all people' has passed," the briefing note says, according to Bloomberg.

This isn't your average document, as the news agency reports. Included are self-penned biographies of senior officials that probably go a bit further than what you'd find in standard corporate memos.

For example, Bloomberg reports, Deputy Minister Yaprak Baltacioglu is described as "an avid cook and working with her will result in weight gain. The assistant deputy minister of program operations at Infrastructure Canada "enjoys the sound of his own voice and is an above average dancer," and an official in the deputy minister's officer likes working there because of "its proximity to Holt Renfrew."

As for the deputy minister's acting executive director, the biography says one of her favourite sports is beach volleyball, and "in her younger days, she was quite the beach babe."

A spokesman for the department told Bloomberg they thought they'd "lighten his day" by outlining to Mr. Lebel just who he's working with. (Well, why not. I wonder if I should try that with my bosses. I could tell them what a hunk I was 35 years ago.)

What to do with a bonus
A new survey illustrates just how cautious people are in these uncertain times.

Asked what they'd do with a corporate year-end bonus of $5,000, almost 42 per cent of respondents to the Captivate Network survey said they would spend some on themselves and others, and save the rest. Notable is that almost 24 per cent said they would save the entire amount, up from 20.5 per cent in a similar poll a year earlier.

Just 2.3 per cent said they would spend it all on themselves, while 9.4 per cent would spend some on themselves, and the rest on others.

Then there are the generous types, the 10.8 per cent who would spend on other people and save the rest, and the less-generous folks, the 11.7 per cent who would spend some on themselves and bank the rest.

Asked what they actually did get last year, almost 63 per cent received a bonus or gift, and more than 37 per cent got nothing. Among those lucky ones, more than 76 per cent received a bonus, 14 per cent a gift from the company and almost 37 per cent a gift from their boss or supervisor.

There are some other interesting tidbits, as well, in Captivate's Office Pulse survey of North American professionals, notably on the practice of re-gifting.

Almost 4 per cent said they re-gift all the time, and 30 per cent occasionally. Twenty-four per cent said they have never done it, but would certainly think about, and more than 17 per cent they won't ever do it. And almost 25 per cent said they do it only when "absolutely necessary."

(I'm not sure whether that last one means they absolutely couldn't find anything else, and were desperate, or they had something they absolutely had to get rid of.)

The Zen Meditation Instruction You Need To Get Started

Zen Buddhism
by araki

Article by Susan Masters

If you want to experience a bit from the life of the Buddhism monks, than the first thing you need is an efficient Zen meditation instruction. Zen meditation can be a great alternative to the more classic forms of meditation and even though it might be stricter, it can be fully enjoyed, especially after some weeks of practice.

What Does Zen Refer to?

In order to fully understand any Zen meditation instruction, you need to understand the basis of this practice. Zen is an actual form of Buddhism which is relying more on experimental facts and wisdom, as well as on the practice of Zen mediation, also known under the name of Zazen.

Zen meditation starts from the typical position called lotus which has numerous variations, such as half-lotus or seiza - also, there is the kinhin posture, which refers to meditating while walking. This practice is divided into Rinzai Zen and Soto Zen, which use different techniques, postures and adjacent objects in order to complete the meditation session. In a Zen meditation, the correct position and the breathing are essential.

An Efficient Beginner Zen Meditation Technique

The first Zen meditation instruction you need to be aware of is that you simply have to sit and empty your mind. This might sound easier that it actually is. In order to do that, you need to find the correct position - and it is advisable to start with the classic lotus position, meaning keeping your legs crossed in front of you, your hands in your lap and your spine erect. The purpose of this erect position is to make sure you don't fall asleep.

The next Zen meditation instruction refers to contemplating. You can start with contemplating or simply looking at your left hand and gradually move on to looking at your arm. Your thoughts should be blank and you should push all potential thoughts away. Gradually, acknowledge your left part of the body, feel it and sense it as intense as possible.

With the help of this Zen Meditation instruction, you will acti! vate the left part of your brain and so, your thoughts will basically disappear. At this point, you need to start your breathing session. Firstly, breathe in as slowly as possible and then breathe out the same way though your nostrils. Gradually, you have to push your inhalation and exhalation even deeper, taking bigger and longer inhales and exhales.

The goal of the Zen meditation program and of each Zen meditation instruction is to activate the left part of the brain, the part that is responsible for thinking, logic and science. If you want to start a Zen meditation program, then you need to make sure you apply each Zen meditation instruction correctly, in order to achieve that state of stillness and emptiness that is considered to be the ultimate Zazen goal.

This type of meditation tends to be stricter than other freer forms of anti-stress meditation, for example, but the results can be truly rewarding. Good luck and enjoy your new Zen meditation program!

Book spreads message of spirituality, healing

Posted: 10 Dec 2011 12:18 PM PST

buy this photoReedsburg author Tammy Koenecke poses in the Times-Press office with her new book "Opening to God's Messages: An Invitation to Personal Reflection" on Thursday afternoon. The self-published author will be signing books at Reedsburg Office Supplies on Saturday, Dec. 17 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.Alicia Abercrombie / Times-Press

Many Reedsburg-area churchgoers might recognize the words and messages in Tammy Koenecke's new book "Opening to God's Messages: An Invitation to Personal Reflection."

After all, she's been sharing those same messages in church newsletters and with her patients for the last 11 years as Reedsburg's head parish nurse and Reedsburg Area Medical Center's spiritual care coordinator.

Koenecke's self-published book is a collection of essays, poems and pictures she's collected during the last 10 years as a parish nurse dealing with finding God in nature and how cultivating spirituality during tough times can help improve a person's overall health.

"Now, with the Internet, people can look online easily for the hows and wheres and whys of sickness, but people don't have a quick resource for their spiritual needs," Koenecke said.

That's why she started writing a monthly spiritual health newsletter more than 10 years ago to each of the churches she serves as a parish nurse coordinator, including Reedsburg Church of God, Reedsburg United Methodist Church, St. John's Lutheran Church, Sacred Heart Catholic Church and St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Loganville.

The Rev. Christopher Miller of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Loganville said that Koenecke's work with his congregation has been invaluable over the years and that he recommends some of her articles to members of his congregation.

"I'll mention it to someone, saying that I think they should read that because it'll be helpful for what they're going through. Her reflections are very thoughtful and helpful for people," he said.

Now, as the RAMC spiritual care coordinator, Koenecke uses those same lessons to help patients and their families through some of the toughest times of their lives.

She finds her inspiration during long walks, talks with friends and the little miracles of life.

"Those kinds of experiences prompt my reflections," Koenecke said. "I never know where or when inspiration will strike, and it's been awe-inspiring to write these over the years and then hear people say that I said exactly what they needed to hear."

Koenecke said people had been telling her for years that she should collect her essays into a book before she decided to do it. Then, at the start of this year, she resolved that it was time to cross the book off her bucket list.

She decided to self-publish her book instead of waiting for a publisher and spent the last five months organizing, editing and designing her book. She received the first bound copy on Dec. 1.

"I could not stand still when I finally held it in my hands," Koenecke said. "I was so very excited. It's always amazing to have a goal and see it through to fruition like that. I would tell people, look at your bucket list and don't put it off anymore. You'll smile so much inside."

Koenecke's book will be available for $11.99 on www.amazon.com and also at the RAMC gift shop.

The temple doesn't go out of its way to raise funds as the Abott remarked "the people around here are poor and it would be unfair on them to ask too much." Science: a minimalist "get real" walk through life

Posted: 10 Dec 2011 07:01 AM PST

Most people like to be insulated from reality. After all, it hurts sometimes. So everybody puts on physical and mental coverings of one sort or another. Clothes, shoes, gloves, beliefs, hopes, imaginings.

I used to do this much more than I do now. My inward churchlessness has been matched by an outward "get real" approach to how I dress and get around. For example, I enjoy a healthy dose of minimalism in my footwear.

Zilch and Nilch
Currently these are my favorite shoes, Teva's Zilch and Nilch. I Zilch in warm weather; I Nilch in cold weather (with wool blend socks). They're wonderfully light: 7 and 7.5 ounces per shoe, respectively. By comparison, a pair of Columbia shoes I'd been wearing weigh 14 ounces per shoe.

So I've reduced by half the weight of what I carry around on my feet most days. Likewise, I've ditched most of the metaphysical, supernatural, mystical, and spiritual notions that I used to cart around in my psyche.

Minimalism feels good to me, whether physical or psychological.

Along with lightness, I love how these shoes connect me with the earth in ways firmer, bigger, bulkier shoes can't. Walking across some rocks, like those in the photo, I really feel them through the soles. Both the Zilch and Nilch are flexible, like my churchless state of mind.

Here's some Teva ad copy that contains some more-than-shoe wisdom.

Minimalist protection is the name of the game with the Nilch. Blending all of the benefits of minimalist construction with full foot coverage, the Nilch gives you the feeling of complete freedom without sacrificing the all around security of a shoe. Freedom and security at the same time… maybe the airlines should take notes.

Sometimes the thinner you go, the better it feels. Hey get your head out of the gutter… we're talking about shoes here. The Zilch is the thinnest, most minimalistic sport sandal we've ever made. Minimalist construction means that the Zilch will bend and flex naturally with your foot, giving you an amazing feel and connection to the earth, but also giving you traction and protection that a bare foot doesn't. ...With the Zilch, you can use your feet like Mother Nature intended.

Now, like I said, some people don't want to get close to Mother Nature.

They want to distance themselves from nasty, dirty, impure, imperfect physical stuff. These people embrace religions, mystical practices, and spiritual paths which proclaim that really real reality is in some other realm.

So they clothe themselves in nature-separating beliefs.

These, of course, necessarily are anti-scientific, because science is the study of the world in which we live, not of worlds that exist only in imagination (yes, I realize physicists are enamored of the multiverse; but they realize that such remains only a hypothesis without substantial confirming evidence).

"Get real" thus is an adage that doesn't appeal to religious true believers.

They seek the unreality of fantasized heavens beyond the physical. There, worldly pain is absent. Yet so is the pleasure of feeling intimately connected to reality through here-and-now perceptions, emotions, feelings, and other experiences.

In his book "Becoming Animal: an Earthly Cosmology," David Abram eloquently speaks of this common (most people are religious) urge to transcend everyday existence, and how self-defeating it is.

Corporeal life is indeed difficult. To identify with the sheer physicality of one's flesh may well seem lunatic. The body is an imperfect and breakable entity vulnerable to a thousand and one insults -- to scars and the scorn of others, to disease, decay, and death. And the material world that our body inhabits is hardly a gentle place.

The shuddering beauty of this biosphere is bristling with thorns: generosity and abundance often seem scant ingredients compared with the prevalence of predation, sudden pain, and racking loss. Carnally embedded in the depths of this cacophonous profusion of forms, we commonly can't even predict just what's lurking behind the near boulder, let alone get enough distance to fathom and figure out all the workings of this world.

We simply can't get it under our control. We've lost hearing in one ear; the other rings like a fallen spoon. Our spouse falls in love with someone else, while our young child comes down with a bone-rattling fever that no doctor seems able to diagnose. There are things out and about that can eat us and ultimately will.

Small wonder, then, that we prefer to abstract ourselves whenever we can, imagining ourselves into theoretical spaces less fraught with insecurity, conjuring dimensions more amenable to calculation and control. We slip blissfully into machine-mediated scapes, offering ourselves up to any technology that promises to enhance the humdrum capacities of our given flesh. And sure, now and then we'll engage this earthen world as well, as long as we know that it's not ultimate, as long we're convinced that we're not stuck here.

...Thus do we shelter ourselves from the harrowing vulnerability of bodied existence. But by the same gesture we also insulate ourselves from the deepest wellsprings of joy... We seal ourselves off from the erotic warmth of a cello's voice, or from the tilting dance of construction cranes against a downtown sky overbursting with blue. From the errant hummingbird pulsing into our cupped hands as we ferry it back out the door, and the crimson flash as it zooms from our fingers.

This Nature-embracing life Abrams describes is scientific, yet not in a dry, detached, laboratory sense. He urges the science of wide-eyed, open-minded observation, of being as aware as possible of what isn't possible, but real.

We're so used to pushing reality away, the feeling of it can be like entering a frigid river fed by snowmelt from the high mountains -- something I did often in my youth, having grown up in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada range.

Now, at my ripe Social Security age, I relive that frigid feeling whenever I ride my beloved Burgman 650 scooter in cold weather.

The great thing (also, the worst thing) about a scooter or motorcycle is that if it is cold outside, you'll feel it; if it's warm outside, you'll feel it. Whatever the weather is, you experience it, because you're out in it. By contrast, in a car -- like inside a belief system -- you're insulated from reality.

Last Sunday I rode my scooter 30 minutes at thirty-nine degrees to have coffee with some friends. When I arrived at Starbucks they asked, "How was your ride?" "It was real," I said. My hands were cold. So was the air. Nice match between reality and me.

Abrams writes about how easily we assume that what's real is to be found in some distant realm, rather than through our immediate bodily sensations. By reducing the barriers between us and the physical world, what we're seeking in life may turn out to be much closer than we ever expected.

Here, as before, the sensuous world -- the creaturely world directly encountered by our animal senses -- is commonly assumed to be a secondary, derivative reality understood only by reference to more primary domains that exist elsewhere, behind the scenes.

I do not deny the importance of those other scales or dimensions, nor the value of the various truths that may be found there. I deny only that this shadowed, earthly world of deer tracks and moss is somehow less worthy, less REAL, than those abstract dimensions.

It is more palpable to my skin, more substantial to my flaring nostrils, more precious -- infinitely more precious -- to the heart drumming within my chest.

Yoga can help with hormonal imbalance in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome

Posted: 10 Dec 2011 07:00 AM PST

Article by Adalhard Brooks

I have always praised the practice of regular yoga for its amazing health benefits, especially for women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Up until recently, I did a form of ad-hoc yoga, in which I would practice here and there, mainly following exercise videos and television yoga programs.

When my husband and I moved to Ocala, Florida a month ago, the first thing I researched was "hot yoga." I'm not sure why, other than the longing to regularly participate in a yoga class with a live instructor. (Hot yoga is basically bikram yoga: The studio is kept at about 90 degrees, heating the muscles and allowing for more relaxation and flexibility.) I figured as long as I was going to begin a long-term commitment to yoga, it might as well be the "hot" kind.

If you think you know the health benefits of yoga but are not consistently practicing, you don't know what you're missing! In freedom from PCOS, I recommend yoga as a supplemental exercise. Here's why: The benefits of yoga include, but are not limited to, less stress, clearer, brighter skin, weight loss, fewer cravings, feeling more satisfied when eating, feeling less hungry throughout the day, tighter, toned skin and less cellulite, and more mental clarity. I don't know about you, but these benefits are a godsend when dealing with PCOS. Especially stress control. Women with PCOS are notorious for having elevated adrenalin and cortisol levels. Both of these hormones contribute to weight gain, especially around the middle, fatigue and further hormonal imbalance. Yoga counteracts these things.

Yoga allows you to become "centered," so you are present in your thoughts, feelings and surroundings. It makes you aware of the things you are doing that are contributing to poor health. It makes you seriously strong and super flexible, and, funny enough, it gives you more body confidence (once you're used to the poses). Your skin will look and feel ten times better after practicing yoga for several weeks consistently. I highly recommend doing hot! yoga if possible, just because the temperature allows you to sweat every disgusting thing from your body. Don't worry about the heat - it's not going to make you pass out. Just bring enough water. Here in Florida, the 90 degrees is actually cooler than the outside temperature!

I recently interview a yoga and harmonyum practitioner, Maria Fracesconi, who also has PCOS, and she swears by the healing powers of yoga. She gives the scientific reasons yoga, meditation and specific poses help with reversing symptoms of PCOS and hypothyroidism. She explains how to regularly practice certain poses and mudras that contribute to weight loss and restored menstruation. More info about the recording to this interview at the bottom.

Your Freedom from PCOS Homework:

*

Start attending a local yoga class. It can be bikram (or "hot") yoga, power yoga, ashtanga or hatha yoga. You pick. *

Try a class and see if it's a good fit; go at least 3 times before deciding you don't like a specific type of yoga. Yoga classes are affordable, especially when researching local community centers. Some classes are even free! *

Schedule in one yoga class a week and work up to two.

Currently, I'm doing one to two yoga classes a week, and the results I'm seeing after only 4 weeks are fantastic! Consistency is key. If you have PCOS, this is must. If there are no yoga classes anywhere near you, research recommended yoga DVD's, or find an exercise station on TV and find out when they have a yoga program (they always do, trust me).

Note any positive changes you feel and see. Have fun!

Meditation Centers in India to Help People for True Freedom

Posted: 10 Dec 2011 06:00 AM PST

Meditation
by anna_t

Article by Lily Candice

The practice of meditation is mostly native to India, and there are several Meditation Centers in India for the genuine seeker of the freedom of mind to choose from. Meditation Centers in India have been set up by experienced teachers in the practice of meditation, one of them being run by the teachers at Z Meditation, located in a small town in the well known Himalayas. The teachers at the Z Meditation Center are focused on the use of deep deconditioning inquiry and radiant mantras to enable the individual to free themselves from preconceived ideas that have been built into their conditioned responses to situations.

To achieve the purpose of ultimate renewal of the mind, Meditation Centers need to be, and are located in serene, pleasant but isolated areas. Such locations allow the inductee to be able to remove herself from the noise of their normal world and begin the process of renewal. It is important to note that the act of meditation is not, and should not only be practiced within organized Meditation Centers in India but as a daily routine wherever one finds himself. Truly lasting peace is actually achi evable notwithstanding the environment in which one finds themselves. The difficulty in reaching this level of awareness can however be overcome by availing oneself of the tremendous opportunity of learning at Meditation Centers in India like that provided by Z Meditation.

A lot of people who are interested in the benefits of meditation are sometimes put of by the wrong notion that all meditation involves is esoteric postures and difficult chanting of mantras in strange languages. These preconceived ideas are very wrong and is part of what is sought to be corrected at Meditation Centers in India such as the Z Meditation facilities. Those postures and mantras are actually useful, but mainly for preparing the beginner to meditation to acquire a certain level of self control and self discipline which is required to be able to reap the benefits of actual meditation. Meditation is som! ething t hat can be practiced almost anywhere having been well-schooled in the process in a proper setting like any one of the several Meditation Centers in India.

A visit to a proper Meditation Center in India will reveal to the seeker the true meaning of being free. Freedom from sickness of the mind and body, worry and many other of the issues that prevail with modern day living are the primary goal of practicing meditation in the right manner. To be able to achieve the highest state of human living, a condition where the individual is living in love and happiness with his surroundings, both human and inanimate, is what is and should be most desirable to all, over and above the accumulation of material and other possessions. The good news is that this ultimate state of well-being is achievable, albeit only to the genuine seeker who is ready to let go of preconditioned ideas and notions. Meditation Centers in India have been set up primarily to help such people in their quest for true freedom.

Abundance Prayer

When I am afraid, I ask myself:
How can I give more to life?
When I am tangled in past regrets
or frightening stories of the future,
I bring myself into the present moment
And know that I am safe.
When I am tempted to complain
I choose praise and gratitude.
I take a deep breath.
I look around and see
how rich I am in the things that count.
I look within and see my unlimited potential
I realize that every moment is filled with blessings
and every day I am alive
is a gift to be grateful for.
I remember that God is my Source
and abundance is reflected
in the faces of the people I love
and in the faces of those
I have yet to learn to love.
Eternally, this abundance says:
Every family is my family.
Every success is my success.
Every bride is my beauty
and every bridegroom my Beloved.
Every child is my new beginning
and every elder is my life ripe with experience.
Every dawn is my new day.
Every sunset is my world turning.
Every season is good
and offers its bounty to me.
Every moment is mine to embrace
for it is the Eternal Now
forever expressing in, through, and for me.
I live in the Forever Here
that is alive in all.
Translucent grace shines in us,
awake and aware of the beauty we are
as we become all we wer! e meant to be.
And so it is.

SPIRITUALITY: Let me say this about that

Posted: 10 Dec 2011 05:02 AM PST

"Can you say more about that?" is a diagnostic question that many of my hospital chaplain colleagues will ask a patient to get them to unpack the details of their story.

Several of my readers put me on the receiving end of that question this week in reference to the columns I've written in the last few months. Therefore, this column will be an effort to "say more about that."

First, several of you emailed about my youngest daughter who had been visiting her sister in South Carolina when she was stricken with inexplicable liver and kidney failure. I'm glad to report that she has been discharged from the Charleston hospital and will no longer require kidney dialysis. Doctors said the incident was likely the "perfect storm" of an infection, dehydration, and a few too many Tylenol products. Her liver has also recovered and she is now back home in Sacramento looking for employment.

Many of you wrote because you had been expecting an update about my daughter in the column that followed, but since we were still waiting on some test results, I remained silent. Instead of an update, I submitted my annual column of personal book recommendations and asked you to suggest titles for next year's list.

I was intrigued by some of your suggestions as they proved my list woefully shortsighted. While I've not had time to read any of the books you suggested, I did find some of them interesting enough to add to my nonfiction list for next semester. Your suggestions are as follows:

* The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skoots

What's so Amazing about Grace? by Philip Yancey

Enrique's Journey: The Story of a Boy's Dangerous Odyssey to Reunite with His Mother by Sonia Nazario

The Sunflower by Simon Wiesenthal.

In an October column, I wrote about a bothersome churchwoman from my high school years that asked me, "Have you received the gift of the Holy Spirit?" Several readers from the charismatic tradition perceived some impatience on my part and graciously suggested that I consider the validity of the woman's idea.

After I re-read my writing, I realized that I failed to let you know how perpetually annoying the woman had become to me as well as several others in the church. In other words, this wasn't just a simple single question that was asked and answered. It had become a persistent barrage of judgment coming through repetitive interrogations.

Finally, in the November column I called, Don't be a Zax, I told you about how I'd settled a 13-year hurt with a fellow chaplain by finally complying with Jesus' advice: "If a fellow believer hurts you, go and tell him -- work it out between the two of you. If he listens, you've made a friend." I got a lot of email about this one -- some from people who shared the relief of having recently forgiven another and also from readers who are still looking for the courage to approach the one who hurt them.

In the six weeks since our meeting, we've exchanged a few emails that have assured me that our get-together was genuine. And although the emails haven't spawned any blossoming friendship, I think I can say without equivocation that our granting of mutual forgiveness was one of the most important things I've ever experienced.

And that's all I have to say about that.

10 Quick Stress Reduction Tips: Things You Can Do Right Now

Posted: 10 Dec 2011 03:06 AM PST

Article by Jamie Jefferson

Feeling stressed? Here are ten things that you can do right now to help you relieve your stress.

1. Make sure you are getting enough sleep. Sleep does so much to help the mind and body deal with stress. If you aren't getting enough, make it a priority to change your evening habits so that you get solid sleep at night. If nothing seems to be working, get professional help. Your physician may have some ideas you haven't tried.

2. Make sure you are eating right. If, by noon, all you have consumed is coffee and a donut, you'll be a jittery basket case. Make sure to balance your diet with lean protein and complex carbohydrates throughout the day. And make sure you are drinking enough water.

3. Play "time warp." Ask yourself, "Will this stress still be bothering me next month or next year?" If you can see the situation as temporary or something that is likely to take care of itself, it might be easier to let the stress go.

4. Ask yourself, "Who do I know how is great at managing stress?" Then ask yourself what that person would do if he or she were faced with the same situation. (Or call the person and ask.) This always gives me key insights in handling stressful situations for myself.

5. Write down your feelings in your journal. Take pencil to paper and start writing as fast as you can so you can get all of your emotions down on paper. Then, go back, re-read and write three possible solutions to the problem.

6. Is there something for which you need to apologize, or do you need to make amends to someone? If so, the sooner you can get to having that conversation, the better you'll feel. If the situation isn't your fault (so you don't want to apologize) but you still want to re-open the lines of communication, you can always say that you are sorry for making the person upset. That can break the ice and get the other person talking so you can work out the problem together and put the stress behind you.

7. Count to ten. If you are really upset, take two or t! hree dee p breaths before you respond to a stressful situation.

8. Use "I statements." This can take some practice, but it's a really useful communication tool. Here, you are simply stating your feelings. It also helps to rephrase what you hear the other person saying.

9. Find a mentor. Find someone to talk to who won't allow you to gossip or complain but will be a good listener and can help you find some valid solutions to the situation that is stressing you out.

10. Go for a walk or run. There's nothing like exercise, preferably outside, to completely and quickly change your mental outlook.

Dangers of a Negative Mind – 3 Steps on How to Free Yourself from It

Posted: 10 Dec 2011 02:00 AM PST

Article by Nelson Berry

What kind of mind do you have? Many of us find ourselves in one negative situation after another, and wonder why this is so, without realizing that our circumstances are only results of the quality of our minds.

If you walk around with a mind full of negative programming, this comes out in the form of negative perceptions, bad habits, unpleasant attitudes, negative behavior, and unwise decisions. All these thus send your life down a negative path. In other words, you are imprisoned in a cage full of negative things and events, just because of your negative mind.

The bigger problem is that we are usually not aware of how our subconscious mind is formed. This usually forms by itself and absorbs influences without us knowing about it. These influences may come from past experiences, interactions with people, memories, and so on. This strips us of the chance to control which influences we want it to heed, and this also means our present lives are easily influenced by our past. And once fully programmed, the subconscious simply controls us and therefore influences our lives. Thus, we are left imprisoned in situations that we don't want but are actually unconsciously responsible for.

If you want to free yourself from this negative cage, you have to change the way your mind works.

1. Be aware of your negative mind. The first step towards freedom is to be aware of your negative mind and to recognize its signals. You have to be able to detect the exact moments when your negative mind kicks in and starts influencing you. This could be difficult, but it can have a significant advantage because it gives you a chance to fight against the negative direction your negative mind is taking you.

2. Pick up the habit of questioning your mind. One way of fighting against your negative mind is to pick up the habit of questioning your own thoughts, ideas, and beliefs. This way, you will not unconsciously follow everything your subconscious mind dictates. This is a habit ! that tak es a lot of practice to develop since most of us are caught up in our busy lives that our minds are constantly distracted. But there are techniques such as meditation and deep thinking to help you become more aware of your thoughts so you can question them.

As you continue to question your mind, you become progressively detached from the negative programming of your mind. You are one step closer to achieving personal freedom from the clutches of your negative mind.

3. Reprogram your mind. Detaching yourself from your negative mind is not enough. It is still dangerous to have such a negative mind lurking within you. So you need to work on reprogramming it so it becomes positive.

To do this, you can use subliminal programming. This is the process of instilling new thought patterns in your mind. This way, the mind is programmed to always go towards the positive direction in any circumstances it faces. This also leads to positive results in your life. Subliminal programming has the power to overwrite all negative thoughts, even ones that have been embedded there since our childhood.

74 Regain your mindfulness. Music by Paul Collier

Enjoy smooth relaxing beautiful music, no words, a gentle instrumental, Take a break from your busy life. Regain your mindfullness. by Paul Collier (C) 2010 All Rights Reserved Download coming soon to www.PaulFromStokeUK.com What does it mean to be mindfull of something? It simply means to keep that thing in mind. Do not attach to it, do not generate emotions, because if the "thing" you think of is negative, emotions will only serve to spoil your present moment. Instead, think of the "thing" you cannot let go off, but purposely! and when you hold the picture of that thing, be mindfull of your breath. Notice everything there is about your breath, the temperature of it as it passes over your tongue, the amount of seconds it takes to breathe in, and the same to breathe out, keep your breath in mind, This may take practise, but you will discover that you CAN have a thought of a painful memory, BUT quickly.....become mindful of the breath. and that painful memory starts to lose its pain, and for the first time starts to store itself in the correct way in your brain "without the emotions caused when it actually occured revisiting you" I wish you well, please do let me know how you get on trying this. Do you have suggestions that might help this for others? Post it in a comment if you do. I hope you enjoy my music, please do visit my channel and listen to my other compositions. Thank you. Paul :)

Using Hypnosis Mind Control for a More Relaxed Existence

Posted: 09 Dec 2011 09:00 PM PST

Article by Christopher Lawson

When you are under hypnosis your focus is heightened, you have more concentration and you are more in touch with your emotions and your resolves. In this state, a person becomes calm and relaxed which allows them to concentrate on their emotions, thoughts or sensations and they will have the capability to block out distractions. The subconscious mind of the person becomes more active than their conscious mind. So when you think about it, hypnosis deals with the person's subconscious.

Since hypnosis deals with the person's subconscious, the person becomes more open to suggestion, so they lose their inhibitions to do things. A clear example would be when the subject is being hypnotized and being told that they are in the water, they will "feel" the cool water in their face, in their hands or in their feet as instructed. They will have the sensation of walking or splashing in the water, as suggested. They will "hear" the soothing sound of the cascading water. They get to "experience" these suggestions, and they are not inclined to question the suggestions. They just feel them and go ahead with the feeling, which is why there is a completely relaxed feeling when one is hypnotized.

It is important to note however that no matter how strong the suggestibility of an idea is, or how strong the suggestive power of the hypnotist is, the subconscious mind of the person strongly holds on to the basic values of morality. The person never betrays themselves and there is always a sense of safety. It means that a person's subconscious is still in the control and will refuse to do things like jump from the top of the building. Even though the person is in a trancelike situation when hypnotized, they still have control of their mind and body. They will not do things, even when strongly suggested, when these things are against their morals.

The power of hypnosis mind control comes in when the hypnotist uses suggestions and other therapeutic interventions to coach the subject into doing something to! achieve their goals, or altering their way of thinking and feeling. The openness of the person to accept these suggestions while under a hypnotic state goes deeper into their subconscious mind. This is a very powerful tool for the hypnotist because when they know their subject very well, they will be able to access more information from the person and they will be able to drive the person into a more positive state. This will work very well for the person who is being hypnotized as it combines both relaxation and concentration and upon awakening they will feel refreshed.

It means that the person, while being subjected to hypnosis, can concentrate on their problems, anxieties, and the things which need improvement without losing control over their emotions. They still retain the feeling of being relaxed. The subject gets to absorb the important aspects and purpose of hypnosis, which will bring more positivity and happiness to their life.

Spirituality: Let me say this about that

Posted: 09 Dec 2011 09:00 PM PST

"Can you say more about that?" is a diagnostic question that many of my hospital chaplain colleagues will ask a patient to get them to unpack the details of their story.

Several of my readers put me on the receiving end of that question this week in reference to the columns I've written in the last few months. Therefore, this column will be an effort to "say more about that."

First, several of you e-mailed about my youngest daughter who had been visiting her sister in South Carolina when she was stricken with inexplicable liver and kidney failure.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" by Rebecca Skoots

"What's so Amazing about Grace?" by Philip Yancey

"Enrique's Journey: The Story of a Boy's Dangerous Odyssey to Reunite with His Mother" by Sonia Nazario

"The Sunflower" by Simon Wiesenthal.

Finally, in the November column I called, "Don't be a Zax," I told you about how I'd settled a 13-year hurt with a fellow chaplain by finally complying with Jesus' advice: "If a fellow believer hurts you, go and tell him -- work it out between the two of you. If he listens, you've made a friend." I got a lot of e-mail about this one -- some from people who shared the relief of having recently forgiven another and also from readers who are still looking for the courage to approach the one who hurt them.

In the six weeks since our meeting, we've exchanged a few e-mails that have assured me that our get-together was genuine. And although the e-mails haven't spawned any blossoming friendship, I think I can say without equivocation that our granting of mutual forgiveness was one of the most important things I've ever experienced.

And that's all I have to say about that.
