Severe Morning Sickness Linked to Preterm Births

In some women, morning sickness might be an indicator of more serious later-pregnancy complications, including preterm delivery, a new study says.

In the study, women who reported nausea and vomiting in pregnancy that interfered with their ability to live normally were 23 percent more likely to deliver their baby before 34 weeks, and 31 percent more likely to have high blood pressure or preeclampsia, compared with women who said their morning sickness did not substantially affected their lives.

Women with life-affecting morning sickness were also about twice as likely to have low weight gain during pregnancy.

The findings underscore the importance of recognizing morning sickness and managing it, said study researcher Dr. Gary Stanziano, of Alere Health, a company that produces health care products and offers a program to treat morning sickness.

"This should not be a condition that's taken lightly," Stanziano said.

Severe morning sickness

About 50 to 60 percent of pregnant women experience some type of morning sickness during pregnancy, Stanziano said. About 1 percent have a severe, persistent form known as hyperemesis gravidarum, which can lead to malnutrition.

While the immediate effects on mothers are easy to observe, few studies have investigated the impact of nausea and vomiting on the later stages of pregnancy, and delivery.

Stanziano and colleagues analyzed information from 81,486 women enrolled in an Alere maternity education program who delivered between 2004 and 2011. After delivery, the women were asked whether they had experienced nausea and vomiting during their pregnancy that affected their ability to do their job or their daily activities. About 5,200 women, or 6.4 percent of those surveyed, reported nausea and vomiting that affected their quality of life. About 1,800 women of these said they did not require any interventions, while about 3,300 required hydration or pharmacological treatments.

Of those who said the nausea and vomiting affected their quality of life, 23 percent had low weight gain for their pregnancy, compared with13.7 percent of women who did not have such sickness.

In addition, about 10 percent of those who got sick had infants who were small for their gestational age when they were born, compared with 8.4 percent of those who didn't have nausea and vomiting.

Treatments

Researchers aren't sure why women with severe morning sickness saw these effects. But poor nutrition and too little weight gain in pregnancy may contribute to the risk, Stanziano said.

Indeed, it's hard to tell whether the effects seen in the study were due to nausea and vomiting, or to the low weight gain these women experienced, saidDr. Jennifer Wu, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, who was not involved in the study. Poor weight gain has previously been shown to be associated with preterm delivery and babies born small for their gestational age, Wu said.

Fortunately, only a small number of pregnant women experience significant nausea and vomiting that lasts beyond 10 to 16 weeks of pregnancy, Wu said.

Women who do have such symptoms should discuss them with their doctors, who may be able to provide solutions, Wu said.

While no drugs for pregnancy nausea and vomiting have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration, many excellent therapies exist, Stanziano said. These include hydration and nutrition supplements, as well as some medications used off label, Stanziano said.

A change of diet, such as eating six to seven small meals a day rather than three large meals, may also help, Wu said.

The findings were presented last week at the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine's annual meeting in Dallas. Study data was provided by Alere and analyzed by researchers at Carolinas Medical Center, with no additional funding from either organization.

Pass it on: Some forms of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy can increase the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, and women should speak with their doctor about symptoms.

Grocery shopping can be baffling these days. Organic or local? Seasonal or fair trade? Is corn syrup really that bad? And where did that fish come from? Fortunately, a handful of recently created free apps for Android and iPhone (and some mobile websites for others) can answer just about any food question. Download them now and chow down in peace.

fooducate2

Fooducate

Just scan the bar code of any product with your phone's camera, and Fooducate will give it a grade (from A to F) and break down the details. Grades are based on both the honesty of the labeling on the product and its overall health and nutritious value. For a box of reduced fat Ritz crackers, for example, it warns consumers, "Contains transfats! Even though the label says 0!" Even better: The app suggests healthier alternatives for foods that don't make the grade. If you don't have an Android or iPhone, you can visit the mobile website and enter the product name.

GoodGuide

This app also includes a barcode reader, so consumers can scan codes and get ratings of the product's health attributes. But GoodGuide also rates products according to their environmental impact. And the 115,000 items in its database include not only food, but also paper goods and household cleaning products.

Seafood Watch

Seafood Watch

The Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch has long been one of the handiest guides to sustainable seafood. This app is an updated, digital version of the guide, kept current with real-time data. It includes Project FishMap, which allows users to find and share info on markets and restaurants offering sustainable seafood.

True Food app

TrueFood

Compiled by the Center for Food Safety, the True Food app contains one bit of info that consumers care about, but that food labels lack: what, if any, genetically modified ingredients are present. The app also suggests brands, plus information regarding the most common genetically modified ingredients. Though lacking the handy bar code feature of some of the other apps, it makes up in substance what it lacks in technology.

Dirty Dozen

CREDIT: Environmental Working Group

Dirty Dozen

Although not so high-tech, the Dirty Dozen app contains the most-requested bit of info when it comes to toxics and food: what types of produce are most important to buy organic (the otherwise Dirty Dozen), and what items don't matter so much (the Clean 15), all updated annually by the Environmental Working Group. The mobile website also enables non-smartphone users to check produce on the go.

HarvestMark app

HarvestMark

The company works with hundreds of companies and thousands of farms all over the world to trace various products back to the farms that supplied the ingredients. Once a company or farm has signed on with HarvestMark, its products are labeled with a special barcode. Using the HarvestMark app, consumers can scan the code to reveal not only where the product came from, but also if it is part of a recall.

Pain-Free Yoga

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 11:00 AM PST

Article by James Williams

Physical activity is supposed to strengthen and heal the body. But, should doing something so good really feel so bad? If you don't subscribe to the "no pain, no gain" exercise philosophy, pain-free yoga is a great choice for you.

Practicing yoga offers many benefits. It can heal the body while it increases your strength, flexibility and breathing capacity. Yoga is widely recommended as part of regular physical therapy to condition the physical body, calm the mind and bring peace to your spirit.

One thing to remember while practicing yoga is that there is no competition. Unlike working out in a crowded gym, you are not meant to be better, or faster, or stronger than anyone else. This can be a tough obstacle for the average North American to overcome. If you're looking at what other students are doing, you're not concentrating on your own body and spirit. Don't fret over the good posture of the person next to you, or be envious of how far they can stretch and how fluidly they breathe. It doesn't matter if you can or cannot do that pose a little bit better; so don't force your body into discomfort.

Pain-free yoga is never meant to hurt you. It's not about trying to outdo the guy next to you, or making your Asana pose better than the girl in the front row. You are not competing with anyone when practicing yoga, not even yourself. Ideally, group yoga sessions will be different every time you meet, and it isn't a big deal if you aren't as flexible today as you were yesterday or if that pose you practiced for hours just won't fall into place. Your body changes from day to day. Often you'll gain a few steps, and sometimes you'll feel as though you've fallen back a step or two. It's all right. Don't let it become a personal tragedy or keep you from carrying on with your yoga program.

Your focus should always be on how your body feels right now. Yesterday is over and tomorrow hasn't come. How you feel at the very moment you're practicing is what makes a successful and pain-free yog! a sessio n. If you listen to your body, it will tell you how much it wants to do today and how far it wants to go.

By trying to outdo another person in your group, or show off your magnificent yoga postures, you are defeating the very purpose of yoga. Yoga is meant to take you away from the competitive nature of today's world. It's supposed to allow you to feel your inner strength, and appreciate what your body is experiencing right now. Don't try to be a hero in yoga, or hurry through your poses just so you can check your email or get on with your busy day. If you find yourself impatient or uninspired, try actively working on your posture. You'll find that time goes by faster and that your sessions are more enjoyable.

A competitive spirit is closely related to impatience. If you feel that you are too competitive to appreciate the practice of yoga, your instructor may suggest that you stay in a pose for an extra few minutes. This is to enable you to examine your breathing, explore the pose and try to perfect it. Yoga is meant to be an active exercise for your body and mind. If you find the pose to be uncomfortable, just stop for a minute; analyze the reasons why you just want to get it over with. Even the subtlest changes in your position can help you be more relaxed and more focused on the posture. Pay attention to your breathing. Are you actively taking deep breaths and exhaling fully to rid your body of toxins? Proper breathing and posture can affect your mind in many ways.

If you want to be the fastest, or biggest, or strongest, buy a membership at a fitness centre. If, however, you want to experience a rich and fulfilling experience that leads to a healthy mind, body and spirit, try pain-free yoga.

America's Prescription for a Medical Nightmare

Lynn never dreamed she fit the profile of an addict. She was almost 30, living in a middle-class neighborhood in Pittsburgh, working and newly married. Then an old cheerleading injury led to two herniated discs in her lower spine. The pain was bad enough to keep her in bed most of the day.

Her doctor wanted to treat her with painkillers rather than resort to surgery.  She started taking prescription pills.

"I knew it was an addiction problem, I knew immediately: I wanted and I wanted and I wanted. From the minute I took the first pill, I wanted," said Lynn, who did not want her last name used to protect her children's privacy.

"I couldn't work," Lynn said. "I was given Percocet, Vicodin, Lortab – youname it, they wrote it. I never asked any questions; I didn't have a problem with drugs." Or at least she hadn't had a problem before then.

What followed was years of deception, rehab and relapses for Lynn, who's now 50. Among her generation of Americans, she was far from alone.

Less pain, more risk?

A movement in the late 1990s to better treat chronic pain led to an increase in opioid painkiller prescriptions. Opioids, which function in the brain the same way as heroin, moved ahead of tranquilizers and sedatives as the leading group of prescription drugs abused by addicts.

"There are just more drugs available," said Dr. Christopher Jones, health scientist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Jones and his colleagues studied drug sales in the United States over the past decade. From 1999 to 2010, opioid sales increased fourfold. Jones said other recent studies found increased sales of stimulants and sedatives, too.

Doctors previously had prescribed opioids "very cautiously," Jones said, but a few studies in the 1990s seemed to show the group of painkillers wasn't as addictive as feared. Later, "unfortunately, what we found is that the idea that the addiction risk is less doesn't seem to be true," Jones said.

Addiction specialists fear the public may have a false sense of security about prescription painkillers.

"There's a subliminal aspect to this — people think if a doctor gives them, it must be safe," said Dr. Harris Stratyner, an addiction specialist with Caron Treatment Centers. "We're seeing a lot of these drugs prescribed to older patients for pain. Junior comes in and sees it in the medicine cabinet, and there you are."

As patients like Lynn found themselves addicted, so did a growing proportion of Americans who tried prescription drugs without a prescription.

Joe Gfroerer of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration works on the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, which uses responses from 67,500 people each year to estimate drug use in the United States.

Based on the most recent survey, an estimated 5.1 million Americans are currently taking pain relievers without a doctor's prescription, as are 2.2 million who are taking tranquilizers, 1.1 million who are taking stimulants and 400,000 who are taking sedatives on a regular basis.

And these numbers may underestimate prescription drug abuse. Gfroerer, who helps compile this data for SAMHSA's Center for Behavioral Health Statistics and Quality,  said officials had to classify "nonmedical use" somehow and chose to base it on people who use prescription drugs without a prescription from a doctor. The category overlooked abusers like Lynn.

The depths of an addiction

Lynn recalls: "At the beginning, when I got my first prescription and I really liked it, I realized I couldn't go to the same doctors and complain about the same thing. I embellished a lot because I wanted the pain pills, and I was going to do anything I could do to get them."

That included doctor shopping, pretending she didn't have health insurance, visiting pharmacies 30 minutes from her home and trudging out in 19 inches of snow to get pills before the pharmacy closed. Yet Lynn would have fallen into the drug use survey's "nonmedical use" category only once she started stealing prescription pads from doctors' offices.

Lynn went in and out of rehab from age 30 to 39, and eventually underwent surgery for her back pain. "It wasn't until I went to Caron Treatment Centers that I understood where my addiction came from ... or that I could get better.

"The one thing I knew throughout the entire process is that I didn't want to die, and I didn't want to lose my family," Lynn said.

Lynn may have had some genetic predisposition to addiction: People on her mother's side of the family have some mental illnesses, a risk factor to becoming addicted. But Lynn was at an even higher risk than others because the common painkiller prescriptions could also be very physically addictive.

Staying clean

After completing rehabilitation at Caron Treatment Centers in Wernersville, Pa., Lynn lived dependence-free for years. But unlike illicit drug users, Lynn had to come face to face with temptation each time she saw a doctor for pain.

Once a specialist treating a serious infection in her sinuses prescribed Lynn pain pills. Lynn didn't mention her addiction. She fell into dependence within a few weeks.

"I thought, 'I'm three years into my recovery, I can take the opiates as prescribed,'" Lynn said. A second round of rehab got her off pain pills again, and she had to find a new way to manage pain later when she needed two knee replacements.

Lynn found a psychiatrist to work with her orthopedist during her surgeries to plan her pain relief. "I got through them beautifully," Lynn said. "The key is honesty."

Communities preventing addiction

To help fight drug dependence, the Drug Enforcement Administration is trying to get leftover pills out of people's medicine cabinets. It created National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day to encourage the public to dispose of prescribed drugs, no questions asked.

Almost 500 tons of prescription drugs have been collected at the past three Take-Back Days, according to Rafael Lemaitre, a spokesman for the Office of National Drug Control Policy. The next Take-Back Day is April 28.

People can dispose of prescription medication on their own, of course. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends taking the pills out of their original container and sealing them in another container with an undesirable substance such as kitty litter or coffee grounds before throwing them in the trash.

"It's silent epidemic, and it's one we're taking seriously. Drug-overdose death rates have more than tripled since 1990; 14,800 people died from using painkillers in 2008," Lemaitre said.

From Ceylonese to Sri Lankan Buddhism

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 10:00 AM PST

Article by Arjanyai

CEYLONESE BUDDHISM OUT OF THE COLONIAL PERIOD

Ceylonese Buddhism has been in close connection with Ceylonese nationalism throughout Ceylonese history. This connection was even stronger during the British colonial period. Under British rule, the monasteries lacked official status and were unable to defend their land or rights. One report claimed that 800,000 acres of temple property were confiscated. The colonial government and the Christian missionaries took the entire school system out of the hands of the Buddhists. The Buddhists became second-class citizens, while the Christians and the English-educated rose to the best positions in the colonial administration. Only Christian Sundays and feast days and the British national holidays were celebrated in this Buddhist country. There were various anti-colonialist uprisings and prominent Buddhist monks were condemned to death. Threats of religious, national and cultural effacement like these led to the Buddhist revival in Ceylon.

In 2382/1839,1 a parivena2, a Buddhist seminary or institution of higher learning, called the Parama-Dhammacetiya Parivena, was founded. Among the important Buddhist leaders produced by this parivena was H. Sri Sumangala Thera, In the years 2415/1872 and 2419/1876 two more parivenas were established, the Vidyodaya in Colombo and the Vidyalankara at Kelaniya near Colombo, which were raised to the status of universities in 2502/1959.

Then, the learned Buddhists led by Ven. H. Sri Sumangala Thera and Ven. M. Sri Gunฺananda Thera demonstrated their opposition to Western ideas, values and social practices by arranging public disputations with Christian missionaries. In these Buddhist-Christian controversies, the Buddhists considered the utter defeat of Christianity easy and certain, while the Christian missionaries could fairly estimate the difficulties of their position and day by day they had to commend themselves in prayer to God and confide in Him for wisdom and direction at every step.

Reading the a! ccount o f such a controversy published in the Ceylon Times in 1873, Colonel Henry Steel Olcott, an American Civil War officer, came to know of the Buddhist conditions in Ceylon. Then, in 2423/1880, he came to Ceylon to take part in the defence of Buddhism. He travelled around the country encouraging the people to revive their historic religion, reorganized the Buddhist educational system on modern principles and founded the Theosophical Society of Ceylon. Within a few years he opened three colleges and 200 schools, and exercised considerable influence over the younger generation. One of the young men who came under his influence was David Hewavitharne (mentioned earlier), who later became a great Buddhist leader called Anagarika Dharmapala, the founder of the Maha Bodhi Society (2434/1891) and the Buddhist revival movement in India. The movement initiated by Col. Olcott also adopted a Buddhist flag and succeeded in making the Vesak a public holiday once more.

Meanwhile, in the field of Buddhist studies, some of the British officials who served in the Civil Service of Ceylon, through their private study and research, developed an appreciation of the Buddhist cultureof Ceylon. Among these was Professor T.W. Rhys Davids who later founded the Pali Text Society in London in 2424/1881 and wrote, edited and translated voluminous Buddhist literary works. By rendering the Buddha's teachings admirable in European eyes, he 'gave confidence and pride to the peoples who had preserved them'.1 He has been one of the two Westerners especially revered in Ceylon, the other being Col. Olcott.

Among Ceylonese scholars, it should be noted that lay Buddhists have played no less important a part in Buddhist literary activities than the monks. One of the best known or, probably, the best known, should be Professor G.P. Malalasekera, the compiler of the Dictionary of Pali Proper Names (2480-2481/1937-38) and Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopaedia of Buddhism, the first fascicule of which was published in 2504/1961.

The E! ncyclopa edia is a work of international collaboration and several regional committees have been set up for the better coordination of the work, the largest of these being the Japanese committee. Smaller committees also function in China, Burma, Thailand, Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands. Some 2,000 pages of the Encyclopaedia have been published so far.

Among monk-scholars, the following names should be cited: Aggamahapanฺdฺita A.P. Buddhadatta, author of Concise Pali-English Dictionary, English-Pali Dictionary, New Pali Course, etc.; Dr. Vajirananaฺ Mahathera, writer of Buddhist Meditation; Ven. Narada Thera, an active Buddhist missionary and voluminous author; Ven. W. Rahula, author of What the Buddha Taught and History of Buddhism in Ceylon. Of no less importance and distinction than these scholars is Ven. Nyanatiloka, a German Buddhist monk of Island Hermitage in Ceylon who wrote Guide Through the Abhidhamma Pitฺaka, The Word of the Buddha, Buddhist Dictionary and other valuable works in German, English and Pali. Of his pupils, Ven. Nyanaponika, a German monk learned in the Abhidhamma, and Ven. Nanฺamoli, an English monk with voluminous translated Pali works, are among international. Buddhist scholars. In presenting Buddhist teaching and practice to the modern world, these scholars have been active in relating them to modern thought and much attention has been paid to the Abhidhamma and meditation.

9 Essential Skills Kids Should Learn

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 10:00 AM PST

Post written by Leo Babauta.

Kids in today's school system are not being prepared well for tomorrow's world.

As someone who went from the corporate world and then the government world to the ever-changing online world, I know how the world of yesterday is rapidly becoming irrelevant. I was trained in the newspaper industry, where we all believed we would be relevant forever — and I now believe will go the way of the horse and buggy.

Unfortunately, I was educated in a school system that believed the world in which it existed would remain essentially the same, with minor changes in fashion. We were trained with a skill set that was based on what jobs were most in demand in the 1980s, not what might happen in the 2000s.

And that kinda makes sense, given that no one could really know what life would be like 20 years from now. Imagine the 1980s, when personal computers were still fairly young, when faxes were the cutting-edge communication technology, when the Internet as we now know it was only the dream of sci-fi writers like William Gibson.

We had no idea what the world had in store for us.

And here's the thing: we still don't. We never do. We have never been good at predicting the future, and so raising and educating our kids as if we have any idea what the future will hold is not the smartest notion.

How then to prepare our kids for a world that is unpredictable, unknown? By teaching them to adapt, to deal with change, to be prepared for anything by not preparing them for anything specific.

This requires an entirely different approach to child-rearing and education. It means leaving our old ideas at the door, and reinventing everything.

My wife Eva and I are among those already doing this. We homeschool our kids — more accurately, we unschool them. We are teaching them to learn on their own, without us handing knowledge down to them and testing them on that knowledge.

It is, admittedly, a wild frontier, and most of us who are experimenting with unschooling will admit that we don't have all the answers, that there is no set of "best practices". But we also know that we are learning along with our kids, and that not knowing can be a good thing — an opportunity to find out, without relying on established methods that might not be optimal.

I won't go too far into methods here, as I find them to be less important than ideas. Once you have some interesting ideas to test, you can figure out an unlimited amount of methods, and so my dictating methods would be too restrictive.

Instead, let's look at a good set of essential skills that I believe children should learn, that will best prepare them for any world of the future. I base these on what I have learned in three different industries, especially the world of online entreprenurship, online publishing, online living … and more importantly, what I have learned about learning and working and living in a world that will never stop changing.

1. Asking questions. What we want most for our kids, as learners, is to be able to learn on their own. To teach themselves anything. Because if they can, then we don't need to teach them everything — whatever they need to learn in the future, they can do on their own. The first step in learning to teach yourself anything is learning to ask questions. Luckily, kids do this naturally — our hope is to simply encourage it. A great way to do this is by modeling it. When you and your child encounter something new, ask questions, and explore the possible answers with your child. When he does ask questions, reward the child instead of punishing him (you might be surprised how many adults discourage questioning).

2. Solving problems. If a child can solve problems, she can do any job. A new job might be intimidating to any of us, but really it's just another problem to be solved. A new skill, a new environment, a new need … they're all simply problems to be solved. Teach your child to solve problems by modeling simple problem solving, then allowing her to do some very easy ones on her own. Don't immediately solve all your child's problems — let her fiddle with them and try various possible solutions, and reward such efforts. Eventually, your child will develop confidence in her problem-solving abilities, and then there is nothing she can't do.

3. Tackling projects. As an online entrepreneur, I know that my work is a series of projects, sometimes related, sometimes small and sometimes large (which are usually a group of smaller projects). I also know that there isn't a project I can't tackle, because I've done so many of them. This post is a project. Writing a book is a project. Selling the book is another project. Work on projects with your kid, letting him see how it's done by working with you, then letting him do more and more by himself. As he gains confidence, let him tackle more on his own. Soon, his learning will just be a series of projects that he's excited about.

4. Finding passion. What drives me is not goals, not discipline, not external motivation, not reward … but passion. When I'm so excited that I can't stop thinking about something, I will inevitably dive into it fully committed, and most times I'll complete the project and love doing it. Help your kid find things she's passionate about — it's a matter of trying a bunch of things, finding ones that excite her the most, helping her really enjoy them. Don't discourage any interest — encourage them. Don't suck the fun out of them either — make them rewarding.

5. Independence. Kids should be taught to increasingly stand on their own. A little at a time, of course. Slowly encourage them to do things on their own. Teach them how to do it, model it, help them do it, help less, then let them make their own mistakes. Give them confidence in themselves by letting them have a bunch of successes, and letting them solve the failures. Once they learn to be independent, they learn that they don't need a teacher, a parent, or a boss to tell them what to do. They can manage themselves, and be free, and figure out the direction they need to take on their own.

6. Being happy on their own. Too many of us parents coddle our kids, keeping them on a leash, making them rely on our presence for happiness. When the kid grows up, he doesn't know how to be happy. He must immediately attach to a girlfriend or friends. Failing that, they find happiness in other external things — shopping, food, video games, the Internet. But if a child learns from an early age that he can be happy by himself, playing and reading and imagining, he has one of the most valuable skills there is. Allow your kids to be alone from an early age. Give them privacy, have times (such as the evening) when parents and kids have alone time.

7. Compassion. One of the most essential skills ever. We need this to work well with others, to care for people other than ourselves, to be happy by making others happy. Modeling compassion is the key. Be compassionate to your child at all times, and to others. Show them empathy by asking how they think others might feel, and thinking aloud about how you think others might feel. Demonstrate at every opportunity how to ease the suffering of others when you're able, how to make others happier with small kindnesses, how that can make you happier in return.

8. Tolerance. Too often we grow up in an insulated area, where people are mostly alike (at least in appearance), and when we come into contact with people who are different, it can be uncomfortable, shocking, fear-inducing. Expose your kids to people of all kinds, from different races to different sexuality to different mental conditions. Show them that not only is it OK to be different, but that differences should be celebrated, and that variety is what makes life so beautiful.

9. Dealing with change. I believe this will be one of the most essential skills as our kids grow up, as the world is always changing and being able to accept the change, to deal with the change, to navigate the flow of change, will be a competitive advantage. This is a skill I'm still learning myself, but I find that it helps me tremendously, especially compared to those who resist and fear change, who set goals and plans and try to rigidly adhere to them as I adapt to the changing landscape. Rigidity is less helpful in a changing environment than flexibility, fluidity, flow. Again, modeling this skill for your child at every opportunity is important, and showing them that changes are OK, that you can adapt, that you can embrace new opportunities that weren't there before, should be a priority. Life is an adventure, and things will go wrong, turn out differently than you expected, and break whatever plans you made — and that's part of the excitement of it all.

We can't give our children a set of data to learn, a career to prepare for, when we don't know what the future will bring. But we can prepare them to adapt to anything, to learn anything, to solve anything, and in about 20 years, to thank us for it.

What is Yoga?

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 09:00 AM PST

Article by Matt Morrison

Yoga began during the Indus Valley civilization in South Asia. The original system was an eightfold path named Asthangayoga. First written records of yoga date back to 200 BC in Yogasutra of Patanjali. Yoga itself is really not a religion, however, it is connected to the Hindu tradition and is based on many of their beliefs such as karma and reincarnation.

Yoga originally meant "union" in ancient India where yoga was first started. Many believe that this union occurs between the mind, body and spirit. There are 8 types of yoga and asana deals with the physical side of postures or poses rather than spiritual matters that most of the other types deal with. Modern language has brought the terms asana and yoga to mean almost the same thing.

Yoga is an all encompassing system of exercise that creates a healthy mind, body and spirit. Breathing, meditation, healthy eating, and positive thinking are just some of the activities that have a beneficial effect on people that perform yoga. Yoga brings emotional and physical health together that causes a very powerful response. Yoga is practiced to balance an individuals life so they can enjoy good health and overall well-being. We will be discussing in more detail on this site poses, practice and classes.

Yoga is definitely more than just stretching. It involves a balance that is created through building flexibility and strength. Practice is a term often used to describe your personal experience with yoga, which is always changing and improving. The great thing about yoga is you can start anywhere with your practice. Even the least "talented" or most out of shape can start and improve from where they are currently.

Those wondering where to begin should definitely get started by joining a yoga class. If you are looking for a good physical workout, then joining a class at the gym is best. If you are looking to develop your spiritual life, then you may want to find classes at a yoga center. Whatever your preference is, there are classes! that wi ll suit your needs.

Arthritis Patients Try Yoga

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 08:00 AM PST

Article by Charlene J. Nuble

Doctors strongly suggests people who have been diagnosed with arthritis to keep on regulating their body functions by exercising. In doing so, the deterioration of their joints won't be as grave. By exercising on a daily basis, a person diagnosed with arthritis combats the bacteria that are slowly inflaming his joints and tendons.

Normally, hospitals recommend arthritis patients to sign up for an arthritis exercise fitness programs. These programs encourage them to walk for a good solid hour three times a week. Other exercises include weight lifting. It is an arduous task but in doing so, this benefits the patient to be stronger.

Studies show that by exercising, the arthritis patient continues to be dependent and function on a normal state. As opposed to those who mope around and dwell on the fact that they have arthritis, they eventually became immobile and seek out the help of others to do simple personal activities such as getting out of bed, taking a shower and dressing.

Yoga, brought to mainstream attention by pop icon Madonna, is an alternative exercise arthritis patients can consider.

Yoga requires the use of special postures such as stretching and aligning the body. By doing so, the body is strengthened and that is what a person with arthritis must be aiming for. Yoga also uses breathing and meditation. This helps the mind to be focused and also relaxes the individual.

People of any age and background have fun with yoga. As it turns out, people with arthritis are also recently discovering the thrill from this body-bender. It not only calms your thoughts, it also tones the muscles. Jessica Alba, watch out!

Here are some tips for a person who has arthritis but does yoga. 1. If it is hard for you to sit in a cross-legged posture, simply wrap your legs around your head. Yoga can be customized. As long as the person is comfortable in doing the activity and is doing it properly, there are no specific rules that must be followed. Yoga is not the army. Th! e goal o f yoga is to relax your body but at the same time also tone your muscles without straining it too much.

2. People wonder whether yoga can help alleviate arthritis symptoms. At the moment, a study was conducted on the matter. Its results were published in a Western medical journal. The study involved 17 participants with arthritis.

The group showed a decrease in the pain that they were feeling after participating in yoga. Yoga not only enhanced their strength and flexibility, it also gave them a better sense of well-being. It also made them feel powerful and not weak, as what most arthritis patients often convince themselves as.

3. If you feel sore after participating in a yoga class, do not worry. That is normal. Since the class required you to use a lot of your muscles, feeling pain at your joints and tendons does not mean something is off. It only means that you conducted yoga in the right way.

4. Find a good yoga class. Some people buy a video and try to do it by themselves. This is not advisable. One needs an experienced instructor in order for the person to show the proper way of doing the activity. This lessens the risk of obtaining an injury,

5. Because of the popularity of yoga in the United States, there are various styles to choose from. Choose one that is right for you. Do not push yourself too hard. If it is difficult, then try another style. People with arthritis has to take classes that approach the subject matter in a gradual manner.

6. Arthritis patients must also seek the advice of their doctors on whether the yoga style they chose is appropriate for them. Also, he must discuss the limitations he might experience with his yoga instructor.

2 Simple Exercises To Help Reduce Stress

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 07:00 AM PST

Article by Hazel Blackthorne

We are all under stress at some time in our lives and for some people they experience stress on a regular basis. Many of the causes of stress are things that are out of control such as bad weather, a traffic jam or a delayed flight. Many people take these personally and that is why they get stressed out about it. The key whether you get stressed or not is how you respond to the situation. The best way to respond to situations that are out of your control is to accept them. This is easier said than done especially, if you have a habit of stressing out. However, these reactions are only habits, and habits can be changed.

The next time that you find yourself in a stressful situation as a result of something outside of your control then use the following stress reduction techniques to help you relax.

Relax your breathing

When people become stressed their breathing patterns change. Their breathing becomes more rapid, short and sharp. Breathing this way increases your blood pressure and anxiety levels. Therefore, if you can control your breathing to a relaxed rhythm when facing a potentially stressful situation you can cope with it far better. Slow your breathing down and breathe in for a count of eight. Breathe deeply to the pit of your stomach. Breathe through one nostril when breathing in and exhale through the other nostril when breathing out. Use your finger to press against the nostril to close it. Do this for about 4 to 6 times until you feel relaxed and calm.

Relax the body

Stress makes our body especially our muscles very tense. Therefore, it is important that you keep your body relaxed most of the time. This can be achieved by lying down or you can do it sitting in a chair. What you have to do is tense the muscles groups in your body for a couple of seconds and then relax for a few seconds and repeat. Each muscle group or limbs are done individually. For example, you can begin with your legs and tense and relax the calf or thigh muscles. To get the maximum be! nefit yo u must progress all the way up your body until you reach your head. When you have reached your head you then tense your whole body and then let go. This tensing and relaxing technique is a great way to reduce the build up of stress in your body About the Author

Thoughts On Understanding Power Of Subconscious Mind

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 06:00 AM PST

Article by Lloyd Masters

Human mind is the most powerful tool in the entire universe which is the source point for all human actions or behaviour. Simply put, whatever one says or does, the origin for all of those lies in ones mind. Hence, you should not underestimate the power of your own subconscious.

For example, if you wish to change the channel on the TV, you think about it and then you do so. But, have you ever noticed you picked up the remote and quickly changed a channel without ever once thinking about why you did what you did? If so, have you ever stopped to think about your actions? More than likely, you did not because the action was a subconscious one.

Now, how does such an action occur? Perhaps a commercial for a product you disliked appeared on the screen and this subconsciously triggered the reaction to change the channel. Yes, the subconscious mind can have an enormous impact on how we act.

This is precisely why one should train his subconscious mind. Undoubtedly it is the best way to develop one's quality of life and take it to a level never thought possible previously.

One's true inner potential can be discovered through harnessing the power of his subconscious mind.

Many people warn us against the evils of our own subconscious. While it is a good idea to know about the dark side of human psychology, but knowing only the negative and dismissing the rest would only result in unfortunate consequences.

Hence, you must always look at the positive aspects of harnessing the abundant power of your own subconscious mind. If you are thinking this to be an extremely complicated process, then sit back and relax because it is not so difficult at all.

Guiding one's own subconscious is not as complicated and difficult as believed to be. One can do this successfully by following a few simple processes. Some of these processes would be discussed in the next paragraphs.

The first and the most basic technique is that of affirmations. Affirming your mind refers to repeatedl! y tellin g your mind about some positive thing in order to attain that desired result. This can be said to be the simplest method to guide the subconscious.

If you have a task to finish which you perceive to be boorish and otherwise do not have any interest to do, you will experience a deeply tired feeling coming over you.

This sense of tiredness is essentially a stress response from thinking the job to be boorish and this stops the energy flow which is vital for him to finish the job. Using mental affirmations during such times is the best way to come back on track in order to complete the task successfully.

Firstly, you could repeatedly remind yourself about the many benefits that will follow the completion of the job. Secondly, you could also stand in front of the mirror and affirm to yourself that you are the person best suited for this job and nobody can do it any better!

Affirmation hold good for habit changing efforts. Suppose, you are trying to stop bad habits like smoking, drinking or over-eating, affirmations are the best. Scientific studies show that constant repetitions and reminders, either spoken or written facilitates tapping the powers of your subconscious and thereby changing your behaviour in the process.

There are other means one can use to harness the power of the subconscious mind. Post hypnotic suggestion is a common method that is often used. This process can be done by using a qualified hypnotherapist but self hypnosis is also an option by listening to pre-recorded hypnosis audios.

Brainwave synchronization through binaural beats is another method for developing the power of the subconscious mind. Here, an individual is made to hear two different sound waves having slightly different frequencies through each ear. These sound waves thereafter goes into the brain and synchronize the two hemispheres creating a deep meditative mental state of mind which facilitates communication between the subconscious part and the conscious part.

There is evidence th! at this can actually be taken much further. Buddhist monks for example are able to use the power of their subconscious mind so successfully that they can exhibit what some would call 'supernatural' powers such as levitation and invisibility.

The immense scope of having a developed and controlled subconscious is that it can influence matters on a subatomic level and can manipulate events in one's lives. Countless books and movies have shown as discussed this at length including the movie 'The Secret' which explains the Law of Attraction.

Thus, not only is it theoretically possible, but in essence it's a physical law that allows one to manifest in reality whatever it is that he wants in life just by communicating the same to his own subconscious.

In recent times, quantum physics has been speaking the same language as our age old religions of the world. Starting from explanation of terms such as psychic, esp, supernatural, etc, this subject now expounds the belief that the ancient religions held - That the reality we live in are essentially the product of our own minds.

It can be concluded that the power of the subconscious mind is truly vast in scope and immense in possibilities and hence developing the same should never be overlooked. Not only minor behavioral changes but it can be your gateway to a whole new wonderful life!

An intransitive awakening

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 06:00 AM PST

By the word "Buddha" we generally mean one who is awakened which is the past participle of bujjhati (√BUDH).  Bujjhati can mean 'to know', 'recognize' 'to understand' which means that buddha, to be more precise, means 'known', 'recognized', 'understood'.  To help put this together, from the Dhammasangani commentary we learn awakening (bodhane [√BUDH]) "is to rise from the slumber of the continuum of the lower nature, or a penetrating the Aryan truths, or a realizing Nibbana."

In modern pop Stress Reduction circles the not infrequent use of the word 'awakening', which is an intransitive verb, is not without its problems.  Awakening is difficult to pin down or characterize.  What do I know or recognize?  Is it nirvana?  Maybe awakening is just an experience unique to me—purely subjective.

To become awakened (buddha), that is, to know or to recognize nirvana, is not the same as someone awakening.  Reading one of Tricycle's Internet articles, The Science of Awakening takes us to the problem with a free floating, intransitive awakening.  Nirvana is never mentioned.  The Stress Reduction Geeks conference, this article addresses, probably never mentioned the word nirvana!

What I believe to be unconscious disrespect for Buddhism, the idea of awakening appears to be unfolding its dark wings, more and more, by which to hide nirvana and all this powerful term represents to the human spirit.  I would not be surprised to find that in the not to distant future of westernized Buddhism there will be little or no mention of nirvana—yet, lot of instances of awakening.

One of the most well known and popular form of exercise is yoga, and its popularity has increased the most dramatically recently, in particular over the last decade or so. It matters not what age, fitness level or health situation that applies to you, yoga will have advantages and benefits.

Where To Find a Yoga Class?

If you are looking to sign up for a yoga class but don't know where to go or where to start first, the best idea is to go to your local gym and ask the instructors or the manager of the gym if they know or have any information that you could use to get you started. The Internet can be incredibly useful mainly because it allows you so many search options and does it all with speed that allows you to quickly and easily browse through a multitude of options, allowing for a quick response to all of your questions.

Due to the popularity of yoga, you should be able to find a yoga class near you, in fact you should be able to find an entire location, such as a yoga school for instance, where all they do is teach and practice yoga.

In fact, if possible, you will want to take your yoga class at this type of school, because they are specifically designed around the art of yoga, and so you will feel confident they will have fully qualified instructors. Mind Management Made Easy

Mindfulness
by RubyJi

Article by Willie Horton

Copyright (c) 2011 Willie Horton

Every week, a couple of thousand people around the world receive my free Personal Development Ezine. This week, in amongst the videos and articles, my recommended book was Anthony de Mello's 'Awareness' - a small book with a huge message. De Mello pulled no punches when it came to explaining and exploring the utter craziness of so-called normal people. As he explains quite simply, normal people are in a trance - sleepwalking their way through life - and, in the process, they miss the very life that they spend their lives searching for! And, to emphasize that point, I've just counted to number of times he uses the phrase 'Wake Up' in his first excerpt - seven times!!

I have recently been criticized for calling my latest self-help book 'Normal Crazy People' - some reviewers have told me that putting the words 'normal' and 'crazy' together like that is simply wrong. However, all you have to do is look around you (and possibly take a long hard look at your own behaviour) to realize that our behaviour is off the wall. Tony de Mello arrived at the same place that many psychologists have done over the last seventy years. The scientific discipline of psychology has probably never once published a research paper using the word 'crazy' but, if you cast your eye over the key areas of research back to the 1930s, you will inevitably come to the conclusion that normal people are, indeed, crazy. Why? Because research from very many different psychological perspectives - behavioural, social, neurological, cognitive and developmental - all confirms the same conclusion: that, as adults, our minds control us, not the other way around. As far as I'm concerned, that's are sure a definition of madness as you will ever come across.

The normal mind does not focus on the here and now - the time and place that you are! The normal mind's cognitive functions ensure that you pay little or no attention to the here and now - the time and place that you've got to turn up to to! get any thing worth talking about from your life. The normal mind's capabilities that allow us to repeatedly perform routine functions mindlessly result in us doing pretty much everything mindlessly. And, all the while, the normal subconscious mind is indulging in its obsession with the key events of our formative years - the conditioning that has made us who we think we are. Quite obviously, this way of using your mind simply leads to what de Mello describes as the 'nightmare' than the normal mind sleepwalks through.

The obvious conclusion is that, in order to get anything much out of life, you're going to have to start taking control of your mind. You're going to have to start managing how your mind focuses and, in the process, ensure that your mind focuses on the key things that you need to get done to get you to where you want to be in life.

Managing your mind is no big deal. It doesn't require that you transform your way of thinking. All that is required is that you start to re-train your mind to focus on the present moment - the only place and time where you can actually do what needs to be done to the very best of your ability. And, even though your adult mind is hard-wired to not pay attention to the here and now, retraining your mind to do just that couldn't be simpler. Like all great journeys, you start with the first steps - you start small. You deliberately decide to use some of your mundane, repetitive, routine chores as a training ground for your mind. You deliberately decide that, in doing these chores, you will pay an extra-ordinary amount of attention to what you're doing. After all, that's how we train ourselves to live our ordinary lives extra-ordinarily.

What am I talking about? Well, think of three or four things that you're going to have to do today. Like eating your dinner, like shaving, brushing your teeth or dressing yourself. The simplest way to pay an extra-ordinary amount of attention to things as mundane as these is to do them differently. In this way you involve! more of your mind in the task in hand - you relearn how to focus. Not just that, you experience the difference between being focused and sleepwalking. When you start experiencing the difference in small everyday things, you start developing the kind of mental focus that is a prerequisite to for you to get the very best out of life.

Attention and focus are all important. Focus is the hallmark of all extra-ordinarily successful people. Little wonder really - because neuro-psychology tells us that your ability to be happy and successful depends on your ability to pay attention.

Buddhism in the Western World

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 03:00 AM PST

Article by Arjanyai

The Scholarly Beginnings of Western BuddhismHOW BUDDHISM CAME TO THE WESTIt is said that at present Buddhism is firmly established in England, Germany, France, and the United States. The religion of the Buddha has taken firm roots in Western soil, and only time is needed for the roots to go deep. And it was through the efforts of Western scholars, not Buddhist missionaries, that the seeds were sown for the growth of Buddhism in the West.

The earliest knowledge of Buddhism came to the West in the early part of the 19th century, when European scholars, mostly for academic reasons, began an earnest study of Buddhism which attracted their attention as a branch of oriental studies or as a part of Indian thought and culture. Pali, Sanskrit, Chinese and Tibetan then became subjects of their study. A number of Buddhist texts were published and then translated. Some scholars wrote learned books on the history and doctrine of Buddhism. Through works of these scholars interest was roused both in Buddhism and in Buddhist studies. Some of these scholars, while taking up a scholarly study of Buddhism, accepted the message of the Buddha and became themselves professed Buddhists. Then there were to be distinguished two kinds of scholars, those who studied and wrote on Buddhism with a Buddhist inspiration, and those who did the same for purely academic purposes. Moreover, reading the writings of these scholars, many Western people became converted to Buddhism. This state of affairs went on in the period when Asian Buddhism was stagnating in the form of habits, or was suffering from persecution or suppression under or in the face of colonialism. With the lack of missionary activity on the part of the Buddhist communities, Buddhist books filled the role of Buddhist missions.

THE WORKS OF ENGLISH SCHOLARSThe West's greatest contribution to the spread of Buddhism and Buddhist studies has been made by England. In 2380/1837, the Pali text of the Mahavamsa (the Great Chronicle of Ceylon) together with a tran! slation was published by George Turner, a civil servant in Ceylon. Meanwhile (2364-2384/1821-1841), B.H. Hodgson collected Buddhist Sanskrit manuscripts from Nepal and distributed them to various libraries in India and Europe. Two other civil servants of the British government came to Ceylon in 2407/1864 and became prominent Pali and Buddhist scholars. One was Robert C. Childers who published in 2415-2418/1872-1875 his Dictionary of the Pali Language, a great contribution to the study of Pali. The other, probably the most eminent contributor to Pali and Buddhist studies, was Professor T.W. Rhys Davids who founded the Pali Text Society in 2424/1881, and set to work in 2459/1916 on his most-consulted Pali-English Dictionary which was to be completed by his assistant, Dr. W. Stede in 2468/1925. Professor Rhys Davids also wrote, translated and edited voluminous works in the field of Buddhist studies. After the death of its founder, the affairs and activities of the Pali Text Society were conducted by his wife and co-worker, Mrs. C.A.F. Rhys Davids, whose large contributions to Pali studies crowned her husband's work. The work of the Pali Text Society was continued by its devoted and energetic third president, Miss I.B. Horner, until her death in 2524/1981. With the assistance of eminent Pali and Buddhist scholars of various nationalities, the Society has published the Pali texts, in Roman characters, of all the works in the Tripitaka, most of the Commentaries, and many post-canonical works. A large number of the English translations of these texts have also been published. In the field of lexicography, the Pali-English Dictionary, English-Pali Dictionary, Dictionary of Pali Proper Names and the Pali Tipitฺakam Concordance are publications of the Society. It can be said that the Pali Text Society has done.the most for the spread of Theravada Buddhism in the Western world and is surpassed by none in aiding the progress of international Buddhist studies.

Max Muller (2366-2443/1823-1900), the famous English phil! ologist who was born in Germany, is regarded as the father of Indian studies in the West. Through his voluminous translations and editions, he made a substantial contribution to the progress of Pali and Buddhist studies. His edition of the 50-volume series of the Sacred Books of the East encouraged professor Rhys Davids to begin the Sacred Books of the Buddhists, a series which still continues.

It was also an Englishman, Sir Edwin Arnold, that produced the most widely known and most successful work on the popularization of Buddhism. His epic poem, The Light of Asia, published in 2422/1879, caused a sudden and dramatic increase of interest in Buddhism among Western people, made many converts and further stimulated scholarly study of Buddhism. Among these converts was Charlse Henry Allen Bennet, a young man of 18 years of age. Bennet went to study Buddhism in Burma, received his ordination there and devoted his life to the cause of Buddhism. As a Buddhist monk, he was known as Bhikkhu Ananda Metteyya. And it was Ananda Metteyya that led the first Buddhist mission to England in April 2451/1908. Among those who were then inspired to adopt Buddhism as their way of life, the first to be admitted were Francis Payne and his family. The beginning of the 20th century in England saw also the founding of the Buddhist Society of Great Britain and Ireland on November 26, 2450/1907. The Society was set up to assist the Buddhist Mission and functioned until 2466/1923. In 2467/1924 it was replaced by the present Buddhist Society of which Mr. Christmas Humphreys was the founding President. Besides the Buddhist Society in London, there are now two Buddhist viharas to help further the cause of Buddhism.

Yoga and Pilates: A Sensible Combination

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 02:00 AM PST

Article by Kevin Pederson

Pilates highlights just a tiny aspect of the vast discipline of Yoga. Yoga includes all that Pilates comprises and a lot more. While Yoga stresses the unity of mind, body and spirit and involves a combination of physical exercises, breathing exercises and meditation, Pilates is more physically inclined; it is, primarily, aimed at promoting flexibility, increase stamina and strength, reduce stress and cure ailments. Yoga is considered not just physically therapeutic but also mentally and spiritually. People take up Yoga not just to be physically fit and energetic, but also to reduce stress and anxiety and achieve inner peace and happiness.

While Yoga is the considered most holistic approach to physical and mental well-being, Pilates refers to a physical fitness exercise system. Together with lengthening and stabilizing of the spine it is designed to achieve and maintaining perfect body alignment and posture. It primarily focuses on cultivating core postural muscles. Yoga benefits, on the other hand, are more than just a physical; they are all-inclusive. For physical and mental health, covering all aspects of breathing, relaxation, internal hygiene, diet, breathing techniques, meditation and ultimately self-realization, there is nothing like Yoga.

Benefits of Yoga

Yoga exercises and poses are not just intended to make the practitioner physically fit and strong, by bathing internal organs with rich oxygenated blood and life force energy they also set their functioning right. Further, Yoga normalizes the endocrine system, strengthens the respiratory system and enhances digestive functioning and elimination besides perking up the reproductive system.

Benefits of Pilates

On the other hand, even though Pilates is not as complete and holistic a health system as Yoga, it helps you reach more or less the same physical fitness goals as Yoga. This is achieved through a series of controlled movements and breathing regulation. Pilates is very effective, especially for aesthetic ! body scu lpting and makes the practitioner feel and look tall, lean and svelte.

So, what is better for overall health and fitness, Pilates or Yoga? The answer is a levelheaded blend of the physical and meditative aspects of both systems. On some level, both Yoga and Pilates share the common goal of strengthening the body with the help of ones own body weight for resistance. As a matter of fact, a lot of their movements and postures are very similar. And, just like Yoga, Pilates can also be done as floor exercises if you don not wish to blow money on buying Yoga equipment or Pilates equipment. Pilates is also a lot simpler to learn and easier to understand. It also tends to give quicker results. But, finally, the choice is yours; it depends on your patience level and the goals wish to achieve. Just physical fitness and a fantastic figure or all that together with long-lasting inner peace and happiness.

Health â€" Stressful Social Situations May Be Physically Harmful in Some & How Yoga Can Help

If immune system reacts with inflammation, repeated stress can lead to chronic disease, study finds

Stress caused by social situations, such as giving a speech or going to a job interview, can affect some people's immune system in ways that harm their health, researchers have found. The study included 124 volunteers who were purposely put into awkward social situations. Those who exhibited greater neural sensitivity to social rejection also had greater increases in inflammatory activity when exposed to social stress."It turns out there are important differences in how people interpret and respond to social situations," lead author George Slavich, a postdoctoral fellow at the Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimmunology at the University of California, Los Angeles, said in a UCLA news release."For example," he explained, "we sometimes see giving a speech in front of an audience as a welcomed challenge; other times, it's threatening and distressing. In this study, we sought to examine the neural bases for these differences in response and to understand how these differences relate to biological processes that can affect human health and well-being."The findings provide "further evidence of how closely our mind and body are connected. We have known for a long time that social stress can 'get under the skin' to increase risk for disease, but it's been unclear exactly how these effects occur. To our knowledge, this study is the first to identify the neurocognitive pathways that might be involved in inflammatory responses to acute social stress," Slavich said.Increases in inflammatory activity are part of the immune system's natural response to potentially harmful situations, but "frequent or chronic activation of the system may increase the risk for a variety of disorders, including asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease and even depression," Slavich added. The study was released onli! ne Aug. 2 in advance of publication in an upcoming print issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.More informationThe American Psychological Association outlines the different types of stressWEDNESDAY, Aug. 18 (HealthDay News)

Many times people don't realize the harmful effects of stress. If stress is chronic it can without a doubt lead to a variety of health and emotional problems. Let's first understand yoga. Yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning "union". Sanskrit is the ancient language used in India where yoga originated. Yoga or union refers to the union of mind, body, and spirit. Yoga brings together physical and mental disciplines to achieve peacefulness of body and mind, helping you relax and manage stress and anxiety. For many the practice of yoga becomes a lifestyle or way of living through behavior, diet, practice and meditation. However, for some it can be used as a way to simply achieve stress reduction and a level of inner peace. There are two major focuses of yoga practice; poses and breathing. Breathing is a major focus of yoga as breath signifies your vital energy and life. Yoga breathing should be deep, slow, and rhythmical. The increased oxygen flow helps your physical body to function and maintain its health and vibrancy. Poses or postures are typically a series of movements designed to increase strength and flexibility. The overall benefits of yoga are vast and wide. Typically, the number one benefit reported by someone practicing or even trying yoga is the stress reducing effect it has on their overall system. People report feeling less stressed, more vibrant, refreshed, more mentally focused and generally in a better mood. You owe it to yourself to try. Call your local health & fitness facilities today to find out when you can try this for yourself. Your life and quality of life may depend on it.

What Is Yoga And Is It Different From Pilates

Posted: 13 Feb 2012 11:00 PM PST

Article by millie

YogaYoga is about feeling good about yourself and Pilates is about toning the body

So many people think Pilates and Yoga are the same but they are not. Pilates is about physical conditioning of the body using a Pilates machine. It focuses on core strength and lengthening of the body.

Yoga is about meditation and breathing techniques. You do find a lot of people combine both of these exercises and both are very popular.

Yoga is focused on breathing, meditation and how you feel about yourself and calming your mind and body at the same time. Yoga helps with many things and creates a sense of well being and calm. Meditation means to slow down and focus on the mind and that is what yoga concentrates on.

Emotionally, it allows you to work with the energy centres of your body to improve your emotional well-being. When you do Yoga you learn breathing control to improve your health and function of both body and mind. Breath is the main source of nourishment for all the cells of our bodies and is a technique we learn to do right in Yoga classes. When doing Yoga you hold the movements of your body with breathing control, Pilates you do not.

You do not burn any calories with yoga which is why this exercise is combined with Pilates and the benefits of both are amazing if you have time to do both.

Research has shown yoga can help with problems like anxiety, asthma, headaches and stress which many of us suffer from now and why Yoga has become very popular for stressed out individuals and is wonderful for stress management.

Yoga has so many benefits and until you try it you will not know how you feel about this exercise and I recommend trying it at home first. Yoga can take some time to learn and there are a lot of books and dvds out here so you can get an idea of the different movements involved before you join a class.

Yoga and Pilates are a great combination exercise routine.

Enumerating the 5 Ways that Yoga is Practiced & How it Helps Deal with Anxiety & Stress

Posted: 13 Feb 2012 10:00 PM PST

Article by Thomas B. Chuong

Panic attacks, stress and anxiety problems – if these three are common problems that you have, then you are probably seeking help. Naturally, these issues can be resolved with the help of medication – but the problem is that there are potentially harmful side effects of putting too much chemicals on your body when the reason for the anxiety attacks may be psychological.

When dealing with panic attacks, stress and anxiety problems, it is high time for you to consider the ancient discipline of yoga. Yoga is a series of exercises, breathing techniques and principles which aim to create a balance between the mind, body and spirit. Can you imagine how much your anxiety will be lessened if only you can manage to create that balance between your mind, body and spirit simply by doing yogic exercises?

The 5 Ways that Yoga is Practiced

To give you a deeper look at what yoga is all about, here are the five ways that this ancient Indian discipline is practiced.

1. Yoga as a spiritual practice.

2. Yoga as a lifestyle choice.

3. Yoga as a primary means for physical therapy.

4. Yoga as a sport.

5. Yoga as physical fitness and health management activity.

No matter which of these ways of practicing yoga it is that you choose, what is important is that it can be used to treat any anxiety, stress or panic-related problems that you have. Exactly how can yoga do that?

Let's say that you are suffering from a panic attack. When you do the yogic breathing techniques or exercises, their goal is to help relax both your mind and your body. Whatever physiological factors are causing the stress, anxiety or panic attack that you are suffering from, the meditation techniques involved with yoga will 'heal' them.

As you get to practice yoga more, you will learn that discipline of being able to calm your mind, relax your body and essentially relax your spirit as well. Over time, you will discover that the way that yoga techniques and breathing exercises! are pra cticed will lessen the frequency of your panic attacks, ease away your anxieties and relieve the stress that you are feeling.

All in all, yoga is beneficial for anybody who is dealing with a certain amount of stress in their lives. It is even more crucial to practice if you have panic attack episodes – so try out yoga now and ease away any anxieties that you still have.
