How to Find Time for What Really Matters

Do you ever feel as though weeks, months, even years, are going past, without you making any real progress in your life? Often, our time can get swallowed up in the busy-ness of day-to-day living: emails, commuting, meetings, chores, TV...

You've probably got some aspects of your life that really matter to you, but that never seem to get the time they deserve. Perhaps it's your family or friends. Maybe it's that novel you've always meant to write, or that small business you want to start.

Here's how to find enough time for the things that are truly important:
  1. Get Up Earlier
    If you work a regular office job, you might tell yourself that you'll work out / study / draw up that business plan during the evenings. But, day after day, you'll reach 6pm and find yourself so tired and demotivated that you just slump on the sofa.

    The solution? Make time for the important things at the start of your day. That means getting up earlier – perhaps half an hour or an hour before your usual alarm call (and heading to bed earlier so you get enough sleep).

  2. Multitask (Appropriately)
    You probably know that multi-tasking is generally a bad idea – you can't read emails and talk on the phone and work on your report all at the same time.

    In a few cases, though, multitasking is a great idea. For instance, you could:
    • Listen to audio books while driving to work, or exercising
    • Read a book while traveling by bus / train / plane
    • Make phone calls while you're out walking
    Essentially, any time you're engaged in a purely physical t! ask, see whether there's some way you can combine it with a mental one.

  3. Make Specific Plans
    You're not going to magically end up with lots of free time to work on your novel or hang out with your family. You need to make actual plans. And if you want to maximize the chance that you'll stick to those plans, either put money on the line or get other people involved.

    That might mean booking tickets for a concert you want to go to, or agreeing to meet up a friend to go for a job. It could mean paying to attend an evening class, or promising your kids that you'll take them to see a movie on Saturday.

  4. Ring-fence Certain Days/Times
    This is similar to #3 ... but you're not necessarily making specific plans to be somewhere. You're simply setting aside time on a regular basis to work on an important goal or project.

    That could be:
    • You always spend Tuesday evenings reading a book, instead of watching TV.
    • You've blocked out Saturday mornings to work on your small business.
    • Every Friday lunchtime, you get out of the office and sit in a cafe with your laptop for an hour, writing your novel.
    By "ringfencing" particular days and times, you make it easy to avoid committing yourself to other activities. You also ensure that you're making steady progress towards a goal, by working on it at least weekly.

Child Who Cries During Urination Puzzles Doctors

A little girl in England seemed perfectly fine except for one thing: her eyes welled up with tears every time she peed.

In fact, a rare situation in which the eyes produce tears when a person passes urine may be more common that thought — because it's painless, and perhaps more of an inconvenience than anything else, people may be unlikely to seek medical help for it, researchers in England who dealt with the little girl's case reported today (Feb. 13).

The cause of the condition may lie in the brain or in the facial nerves, according to the report. Both the production of tears and the passing of urine are under the control of a brain region called the pons.

The report is published online in the journal Pediatrics.

An unusual case

The 3-year-old girl was brought to doctors in November 2009, because of "watering of her eyes every time she passed urine," according to the report. When it happened, her jaw would drop and her expression would become vacant, although she remained conscious and was not in any pain, wrote the researchers from University College London Hospital, and Conquest Hospital in Hastings.

The problem began when the girl was just weeks old. An ultrasound of her kidneys revealed nothing abnormal, and there were no signs dry eyes or of any other medical problem.

The researchers searched the medical literature, and found only one other formal report of a similar case, from 1932. In that case, a young man who was a medical student reported a "copious flow of dears during defecation and urination."

The man kept track of his symptoms for 94 days, according to that report by a researcher at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, and the problem was fixed by a dose of atropine, a drug that lowers the activity of certain nerves, and can also be used to dilate the pupils of the eyes.  

Looking for more information, the researchers in England turned to health websites, and found more cases. A search of online discussion groups revealed 35 people who described having the problem of tear production during painless urination. Slightly more than half were female, and three described having a close relative with similar symptoms.

None of the people had sought medical advice, saying that the tears, while inconvenient and embarrassing, weren't a significant medical problem, according to the report.

A clue from crocodile tears?

In their search for an explanation, the researchers looked at what happens when someone cries "crocodile tears." Though the term has more recently been applied to insincere or fake crying, the original description of crocodile tear syndrome was based on people who would cry while eating or drinking, due to either a facial injury or a condition called Bell's palsy.

In those cases, nerves that regrow after an injury or disease may be misdirected toward the lacrimal gland, which produces tears, according to the report. There are also cases of crocodile tear syndrome occurring from birth, and these cases may be due to the nerves crossing over during embryonic development, the researchers wrote.

If such an abnormal nerve connection could cause a person to have produce tears while eating or drinking, a similar process could cause a person to produce tears when they urinate, according to the report.

However, this would not explain the little girl's vacant expression, or her jaw dropping when the crying happens, according to the report. For now, those symptoms remain a mystery.   

Pass it on: Tearing up while urinating is a fairly rare condition that has doctors stumped.

Immortal Buddhas

The Buddha is really to be known by his Dharma body (dharma-kaya), not is corporeal body.  When the Dharma body transmigrates (samsara) it is called "sentient being" while in and for itself there is no such transmigration.  This body is the absolute.  It the very substance from which our fictional, phenomenal world is composed.

We also might conclude that Buddhas do not actually pass away, being subject to death—at least a Buddha's Dharma body doesn't.  In the Suvarnaprabhâsa Sutra (Golden Light Sutra) we read:

"The Buddha does not pass away, the Dharma does not decline; it is for the purpose of ripening sentient beings that the Buddha appears to have passed away.  Inconceivable is the Blessed One, the Buddha; the Tathagata is the body of permanence, in order to benefit sentient beings he show a variety of works in fine array" (trans., D.T. Suzuki).

Incidentally, this may explain why Queen Mayadevi was not injured when the Buddha-to-be was born insofar as his body was incorporeal being a spiritual body (manomayakaya) according to the Lokottaravadin sect of Buddhism.

Looking now at the trikaya or triadic body notion of the Buddha we can think of the Dharma body as suvarna prabhâsa, that is, as golden light or more accurately 'brilliant radiance'.  This is more fundamentally, pure Mind.  When pure Mind enjoys the golden light, this is the sambhoga body or body of enjoyment.  With the expansion of this golden light into the unenlightened or unawakened realms of existence, the golden light becomes the nirmana body localizing into each particular thing as the source of its life.

As I am sure  the reader can obviously see the triadic body is, in essence, one body yet three bodies.  The Dharma body is really the absolute substance (svabhâva) of existence which is also a dynamic substance than can reflect into itself, enjoying (sambhoga) itself, while animating all phenomena which is the nirmana-kaya.

As we turn more and more to that which animates us, we are turning to the nirmana Buddha.  When we have some kind of profound awakening or connection with the teachings of the Buddha it is always with the presence of light (prabhâsa), never otherwise.  His light flows into us as if to say, "Yo, why are you hanging onto this dung machine so much—do you get a kick out of pain?  Let's expand this light by dumping that which makes it seem absent."  Again, this is the nirmana Buddha.  Much later we will get introduced to the kick-ass Dharma body so as to enjoy it (sambhoga) becoming, as a result, full-fledged Bodhisattvas working our way to full Buddhahood.

Depression, Supplements and Spirituality - What You Don't Know May Hurt You

Recently, I read a couple of posts on depression and supplements and feel the need to alert people who are suffering from this condition about a side effect of supplementation that few, if any, are discussing. Usually, the author of the article on depression and supplements stresses the importance of proper neurochemical balance in the brain. If your brain is out of balance chemically, there is a good chance you will be depressed, or will experience anxiety or stress. Depression is often characterized by a deficiency of a certain chemical. Anxiety is characterized by too much of some other chemicals. But if you take this special brain supplement, it will help with your condition--so goes the idea.

However, it is extremely important to determine whether the cause of your being depressed is some inner chemical imbalance or whether it's the presence of certain circumstances or challenges in your life. If it's the circumstances (and I'm sure many people are experiencing difficulties, including intense situations involving their spirituality right now), how can a drug or a supplement help that? Does popping a "magic pill" help you? Proper nutrition is always a good thing, but you may want to think twice before you take special supplements or drugs for depression and I will explain why below.

Several years ago I went through a difficult time in my life but I was clear that the chemicals in my brain (or lack thereof) were not the cause of my feeling depressed--my life circumstances were. Chemical imbalance (if there were any) may have been associated with my depression, but it sure was not the cause of it. So how would taking medication help my condition?

I never took any drugs, and I'm glad. Even when I was not as conscious spiritually as I am now, I had a vague inner awareness that taking the drugs would thwart me (and perhaps even prevent me) from discovering the things I needed to discover that would actually help me! Because how can taking a supplement or a drug help you solve the! root ca use if you're artificially up due to happy chemicals flowing in your brain and you are no longer interested in your original issue (like, say, a job you can't stand)? Isn't it better to search for the root cause and solve that problem?

My Mom (who lives on the other coast) is one interesting example. Every time I would go visit her or whenever I called, she would communicate to me some of her strong wishes and goals. But ever since the doctors put her on anti-depressants she mellowed out about those goals. Are her wishes no longer that important to her? Have her goals lost their spark? In any case I see a difference in her and I can't say that I'm pleased.

If you are suffering from depression won't you search for how you can truly help yourself? Doesn't searching involve looking within and by doing so, discovering some important things about your true self? I can say with confidence that for many people (including myself), depression is the route to discovering your higher self and your higher purpose in life.

In fact, I was not surprised when about a week ot two ago, channel Geoffrey Hoppe (who channels Adamus St. Germain) said that to reconnect with your higher self (and achieve ascension), one should try to steer clear of any anti-depressants. ( I am not a doctor--and neither is Geoffrey--so this is not meant to be medical advice. But it is important to be aware of these ideas.)

So, you can view depression as a blessing because it ensures that you search for and eventually find the answers, find your way through your life lessons and awaken to your truth!

Seriously. If it hadn't been for my unhappiness and despair I wouldn't have searched and if I hadn't searched I wouldn't have found the amazing things I found out...about spirituality, about 2012, the higher purpose of going through the "dark," and the blessings of living through a variety of experiences. Solving depression with drugs or supplements? I would think twice.

Kids' Lack of Sleep a Century-Old Problem, Study Finds

Parents the world over have been worrying about whether their children get enough sleep for more than a century, a new study shows. 

The study also found that, even as recommendations about how much sleep kids need have changed since the late 1800s, studies have shown that kids get less sleep than recommended.

"We were surprised that over the last century, the actual amount of sleep that children are getting was consistently about 37 minutes less than what was recommended for them," said lead study author Lisa Anne Matricciani, of the University of South Australia in Adelaide.

And for the last 100 years, "modern living" has been blamed for robbing kids of shuteye, according to the research. The bedtime-delaying culprits have changed with the technologies of the time, from the electric light bulb and the radio in the earlier parts of the 20th century, to the social media and video games of today.

The study is published today (Feb.13) in the journal Pediatrics.

Recommendations vs. actual sleep

To explore the historical trends in sleep recommendations, and compare them to data on the actual amount of time children and teens were sleeping, Australian researchers collected information and studies dating from 1897 to 2009.

They found 32 sets of age-specific sleep recommendations for children, and more than 200 articles that reported on how much actual sleep children got.

The advice by experts of how much sleep children and teens need tend to exceed what kids really get by roughly 30 minutes, whether the year was 1908 or 2008. Although age-specific sleep recommendations declined over the century, the actual amount of sleep that children got declined at a nearly identical rate.

Insufficient sleep in children has been linked with poor academic performance, an increased risk for obesity, higher rates of drug and alcohol use and more frequent injuries.

"The rationale for sleep recommendations was also strikingly consistent for more than 100 years -- that children were overtaxed by the stimulation of modern living," Matricciani said.

But what she and the research team found most remarkable was that there was almost no solid, empirical evidence to support the sleep recommendations being made for children.

"This is not to say that kids don't, in fact, need more sleep, just that the evidence is not out there," said Timothy Olds, a professor of health sciences at the University of South Australia, who also worked on the study. Sleep recommendations may reflect ingrained biases -- that kids are sleep-deprived or the world is going too fast -- more than good science, he said.

Perhaps parents "should take sleep recommendations for children with a grain of salt," Olds suggested.

Watch your child

The best way for parents to determine if a child is getting enough sleep is to "watch your child, and not the clock," said Dr. Marc Weissbluth, an expert on childhood sleep problems and a professor of pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.

In his book, "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" (Ballantine Books, 1999), Weissbluth does not offer sleep recommendations, but instead tells parents to observe certain signs and symptoms.

Look at a child's mood, personality and performance near the end of the day, he advised. If your child is under age 3 and napping, look at them between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.; for a child age 3 or older, look between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Is your child sweet, adaptable and well-functioning, or short-fused, clingy and irritable? This can tell parents whether a child is well-rested or overtired, and whether naps or bedtimes need to be adjusted, Weissbluth said. 

Weissbluth said that even though there might be an absence of evidence about exactly how much sleep children need this shouldn't leave parents with the impression that kids are getting enough shuteye.

Rather than focusing solely on the number of hours a child sleeps each night, he advises parents to focus on how a child appears near the end of the day, and when sleep is occurring.

Dumont spent ten years in Tibet studying to be a lama and learning many mystical secrets in the process. He returned to America intending to spread the basic doctrines of Tibetan Buddhism in order to remove ignorance and relieve suffering, but realized that he could accomplish more by fighting crime. He never carried a gun, believing that this would make him no better than those he fought.

Wikipedia has a sizable entry on the Green Lama:

The Green Lama first appeared in a short novel entitled The Green Lama in the April 1940 issue of Double Detective magazine. The novel was written by Kendell Foster Crossen using the pseudonym of "Richard Foster". Writing in 1976,[1] Crossen recalled that the character was created because the publishers of Double Detective, the Frank Munsey company, wanted a competitor for The Shadow, which was published by their rivals Street & Smith.

The character, partially inspired by explorer Theos "the White Lama" Bernard, was originally conceived as "The Gray Lama" thinking that he could hide in the shadows and sneak around, but tests of the cover art proved to be less than satisfactory so they changed his color to green. The Green Lama proved to be successful (though not as successful as The Shadow), and Crossen continued to produce Green Lama stories for Double Detective regularly up until March 1943, for a total of 14 stories.

Ever Since Yoga migrated from India to the westernized world back in the 1800s is has undergone multiple changes and adaptations. For the most part Yoga is practiced in 5 different manners.

Kierkegaard and crazy leaps of faith

Recently I listened to a Philosophy Talk podcast about Soren Kierkegaard, a dour 19th century Danish philosopher. I read some Kierkegaard back in college, many years ago. At that time I was into crazy existentialists, loving how they embraced the meaninglessness of life.

Now, I see Kierkegaard as simply crazy -- without many, if any, redeeming philosophical qualities that balance his insane defense of religious leaps of faith.

The podcast focused on Kierkegaard's take on the Old Testament tale of Abraham and Isaac, as discussed in his book "Fear and Trembling." According to Wikipedia:

Kierkegaard wanted to understand the anxiety that must have been present in Abraham when "God tested [him] and said to him, take Isaac, your only son, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah and offer him as a burnt offering on the mountain that I shall show you."

Abraham had a choice to complete the task or to forget it. He resigned himself to the three and a half day journey and to the loss of his son. "He said nothing to Sarah, nothing to Eliezer-who, after all, could understand him, for did not the nature of temptation extract from him a pledge of silence? He split the firewood, he bound Isaac, he lit the fire, he drew the knife." Because he kept everything to himself in hiddenness he "isolated himself as higher than the universal."

Kierkegaard says, "Infinite resignation is the last stage before faith, so anyone who has not made this movement does not have faith, for only in infinite resignation does an individual become conscious of his eternal validity, and only then can one speak of grasping existence by virtue of faith."

There's some fancy intellectual talk going on there. Here's a more down to earth way of looking at the situation.

Abraham hears a voice in his head that tells him to kill his son as a burnt offering. He doesn't tell anybody about this. He ties up his son, lights a fire, pulls out a knife, and prepares to kill his child. What the hell is virtuous, moral, or praiseworthy about these actions? 

If any normal person came along and saw a father about to kill his son in this fashion (or any fashion), they'd do whatever they could to stop him.

However, because God supposedly put the idea in Abraham's head, countless Christians -- including Kierkegaard -- believe that Abraham's leap of faith, accepting that killing his son is the right thing to do in spite of all the reasons that it isn't, somehow is the essence of religious life.

That, plainly put, is fucking crazy.

A leap of faith is what allowed Charles Manson to convince his followers to commit multiple murders. A leap of faith is what allowed over 900 People's Temple followers of Jim Jones to kill themselves by ingesting cyanide.

Leaps of faith are dangerous. They can kill you. Or others.

That's an extreme consequence of blind faith, religious or otherwise. Lesser, yet still serious, consequences include being taken advantage of, surrendering autonomy, and enabling manipulative authority figures to screw you over.

I used to belong to an Indian religious organization, Radha Soami Satsang Beas, which loved the story of a guru who ordered his disciples to do something stupid without giving any reason for his dictate: build mud platforms; then tear them down and make some more.

That is why Christ said, If ye love me, keep my commandments.

This is the first step. Ultimately, we give body, mind, soul and everything. Such a man has got no will of his own, but the Will of the Master is his will. Just see where you actually stand. If you give everything, what remains is God. W-o-r-l-d spells world. If you take out this I-hood from within you, you are God. If you take out 'l' from the word World, only Word remains. 

In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God and the Word was God.

This little I-hood, this ego, stands in our way to God. When you completely surrender yourself to the God-in-man (to the God-in-man, not the body, although we have respect for the body of course), then your 'L' or I-hood is eliminated.

There is a story of Guru Ram Das, who was the fourth Guru of the Sikhs. The Masters always test their disciples to see how far they are fit. So his Master (Guru Amar Das), gave an order to raise certain platforms made from mud. All of the disciples started building the platforms as ordered. 

When they were ready, the Master inspected them and said, 

"These are no good, this is not right, you will have to make new platforms."

Again the disciples constructed the platforms. Two, three, four, five times they did this. Then the Master said, 

"This place is no good. There is a better place over there to build them."

Well, bye and bye, all of the disciples left off building the platforms except Guru Ram Das. The other disciples began to say that the Master has grown old and is losing His faculties. 

Guru Ram Das with tears in his eyes said, 

"The Master is all wisdom, All-Consciousness. If I am ordered to build these platforms and break them all through life, my lookout is only to obey His orders."

He had complete self-surrender.

You follow me? This means complete self surrender. Now, step by step, judge for yourself where you stand. If you want to meet God, then you must have self surrender. 

No, if you want to be a slave of a crazy man/woman, then you must do everything you're commanded to do. Charles Manson and Jim Jones would have loved to have a hundred, or a thousand, Guru Ram Dass's. 

This is how charismatic crackpots attract their devotees. This is how religious authorities manage to maintain control over millions, even billions, of sheeplike true believers. People are manipulated to believe that unquestioning obedience, even when told to do something obviously wrong, is the path to salvation, God, eternal life.

Killing your son is wrong, even if a voice in your head says "This is God. Do it!" Try convincing a judge and jury you're innocent of murder by using that defense. Good luck, unless you've demonstrably insane.

Which, you likely are, if you think that whatever God, the Pope, a Guru, or some other religious authority tells you to do must be done, no matter what.
