Recently, I've found that I need to make more notes and setup more reminders on my computer and phone than I used to. It happens to everyone, right? But, what if there was something we could do to stop or slow memory loss?

As you might have guessed, the answer doesn't come in a pill. In order for your brain to work properly and recall memories, it must be fueled with the right nutrients. A 1997 Journal of the American Geriatric Society study found that patients who had higher blood levels of vitamin C and beta carotene scored better on tests of memory, vocabulary, recall and recognition. Both vitamins work as antioxidants, which can prevent cell damage within the brain (and the rest of the body).

Omega-3 fatty acids may improve memory and learning in older adults with minor cognitive impairments, according to a 2010 study published in the Journal of the Alzheimer's Association. Omega-3 fatty acids can be taken in supplement form, but they are also found in certain foods.

Although there are specific nutrients that have been shown to have an effect on memory function, it's important to remember that these nutrients don't work in isolation. That's why it's always better to get as much nutrition from food as possible.

Here are a few tips for getting more of these brain-boosting nutrients into your diet (in their natural form):

  • Guacamole night:  Guacamole is a fun party food, but it doesn't have to be reserved for special occasions. Make some guacamole and chips for your family to nosh on while dinner is still in the oven. Avocados are rich in vitamin C, which will help you remember the fond memories you're creating.
  • Add grated carrots to your salads:  Carrots are so quick and easy to grate, and they're also very rich in beta carotene (hence the name).
  • Eat more fish: Salmon, tuna and halibut all have high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Try to incorporate one of these into your dinner plans at least once a week.
  • Snack on walnuts: Walnuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, so they are a good alternative if you don't like fish. Flaxseed is another non-fishy source of this essential fat.
  • Replace starchy white potatoes with beta-carotene-rich sweet potatoes: You can bake them, mash them, or make them into fries – just as you would with the white potato.

Something to consider: If everyone is so stressed out, venting to others may not offer the relief it once did and could serve to make matters worse.

Instead, try writing down your feelings, frustrations, thoughts, and become your own support system by offering yourself some viable solutions. Dig deep and you will find the answers. This is a healthy and lovely habit to get into.

Next, do a head check. When you think or feel "stress", change the word and thought to "energy" and then - let it out!! Scream, punch a pillow, stomp your feet and do it with gusto! Try to leave others out of your release. It will be a secret you can share after you have successfully survived the spaz.

Soon enough, the peace and prosperity epidemic is bound to hit so tap the stress state for all it's worth.

In the Maldives, a tiny Indian Ocean nation of 1,200 islands, a group of men stormed into the museum last Tuesday and ransacked a collection of coral and lime figures, including a six-faced coral statue and a 1 1/2-foot-wide representation of the Buddha's head. Officials said the men attacked the figures because they believed they were idols and therefore illegal under Islamic and national laws, according to the New York Times.

The Maldives were Zen Buddhism Spirituality from around 250 BCE until the 12th century, when the king converted to Islam.

The vandalism is reminiscent of the Taliban's 2001 destruction of the giant statues of the Buddha at Bamiyan, in Afghanistan.

The destruction of the Zen Buddhism Spirituality artifacts is just a symptom of a wider problem in the Maldives; it took place the same day that Mohamed Nasheed, who won the presidency in 2008 in the country's first democratic election, was forced from office in a coup. According to a Maldives news source, the destruction included a coral stone head of Lord Buddha which was one of the most significant pieces at the museum. "Other pieces vandalised include the Bohomala sculptures, monkey statues and a broken statue piece of the Hindu water god, Makara, while the two five faced statues discovered from Male' were also damaged – the only remaining archaeological evidence proving the existence of a Zen Buddhism Spirituality era in the Maldives."

Ali Waheed, the director of the National Museum, which was built by China as a gift to the country, said on Monday that officials might be able to restore two or three of the damaged statues, but that the rest were beyond repair. "The collection was totally, totally smashed," Mr. Waheed said. "The whole pre-Islamic history is gone."

"To arrive at such a view [as Walpola Rahula does], however, is surely to ignore not only all the passages that we have been considering but also the quite unequivocal and bold statement to the effect that the Buddha is the propounder, the expounder, the bringer to the goal (atthassa ninetâ), the giver of the Deathless (amatassa dâtâ) found at, for instance, M i 111; and cp M iii 195; S iv 94; A v 256f etc.  Rather it is only through the gracious intervention of the Buddha that the supermundane path and its goal are attained" (138).  (Brackets and italics mine.)

Speaking from my own experience this is a real event.  Let me add, that the term 'light of Mahayana' well describes the Buddha's body.  This event is not something fanciful or subjective.  It can be somewhat described as an encounter of the fourth kind (CE4).  All the previous years of sitting in meditation, etc., pale in significance.  It is through this encounter that real Yoga is laid out.  Without it, Yoga is really not Yoga.

Back to Divine Revelation in Pali Yoga, Masefield has us understand that it is 'right view' that is gained only through a Buddha's compassion-grace (provided we have little dust in our eyes).  By it we see things as they are (yathabhutam), see nibbana/nirvana and the four aryan truths.  Right view, I hasten to add, leads the way.  It races on ahead" (S. i. 33) to prepare the path that would be otherwise impossible to accomplish.

In fact, it's one reason people enjoy movies so much. It's because the person watching the movie becomes attached to the situations, characters, and acts of the movie.

The director and writer of the movie are controlling the audience and the experience. Your mind works the same exact way. If you can learn to experience the things you want in life, you would learn that we can actually experience it in our reality. Science actually proves that our brains are more plastic then we ever thought possible. This means our mind adapts to our environment really fast.

When you're watching that movie, your mind is actually experiencing it as if you were doing it. It's why you secretly like the movie. You're feeling as if you were being your greater self.

World Spa, Thoresby Hall, Nottinghamshire

This spa is tucked away in the beautiful grade one listed mansion, Thoresby Hall, which makes the perfect place to enjoy a sumptuous weekend away. With a range of hot and cold treatment rooms, including an invigorating ice cave for the very brave, this spa simply oozes upper-class establishment.

My personal favourite feature is the hydrotherapy pool, which features sculpted under water beds on which you are pummelled by powerful water jets - a facility that I am yet to experience at any other spa.

Aqua Sana, Center Parcs, Sherwood Forest

This spa, while located in the Sherwood Forest Center Parcs resort, is open to the public as well as Center Parcs guests. The 'World of Spa' is the largest hot and cold experience that I have had the pleasure of utilising, with a wide range of different ways in which to sweat out all of your stresses.

The heated outdoor pool is lovely for a dip, whatever the weather, and the Zilli Café offers some tasty treats if you'd like to indulge in lunch or a treat during your visit. If you do wish to stay the night then you can book an overnight stay in one of the Center Parcs apartments to get the most out of your you time. This also means that you get to experience the restaurants and other facilities of the Center Parcs complex.

All of the above spas offer the usual range of treatments, from luxury manicures to full body mud wraps, and you're guaranteed to leave them feeling relaxed, refreshed and revitalised.

Yoga - One Size Doesn't Need To Fit All

Although there are a lot of great reasons to try Yoga, most people won't even take a shot at it. I think I know why. Stay with me for a couple of minutes and I'll get there.

Years ago, I read one of the most truth filled statements I have ever encountered. Although I usually try to avoid generalities, I believe that most of them DO have a portion of truth to them. Unfortunately, many people either don't realize that these statements are not ultimate truths or they assume that since there are times that these old adages and generalities are NOT true, not only are they false, but completely without merit.

Most generalities, as I have stated, DO contain some truth, enough truth that we can often at least glean guiding principles from them even if we cannot live our lives exactly by them.

Now, the statement I made mention of was, "The only job where you start at the top is digging a hole!"

I normally would not actually say that to someone who expected to get to the top of the heap by tomorrow, but the idea behind the statement would be understood by most of us. Those people who have made it to the top of their profession, art, or even their hobby, usually put in a lot of practice time and made a lot of mistakes on their way to achieving the level of skill or competence that they have reached.

Which brings me (finally, you say) to Yoga.

Yoga has the potential to be one of the best physical fitness programs that anybody can practice, but many people won't even give it a chance.

Yoga requires no special clothing, no special skill, no special equipment. It doesn't need a gym, because it can be practiced on the floor beside your bed, in the living room, or even in a large enough bathroom. Once you learn a few basic poses (asanas), you can do your yoga routine at home or on the road. You can even do some of your Yoga while riding in a car or bus. It doesn't even require a personal trainer. You actually CAN learn Yoga from a book! !

So what stops a lot of people from trying Yoga?

To tell the truth, I think they are intimidated.

Obviously, Yoga is not something we read about or hear about every day, so there is already a lot of misunderstanding and uncertainty about the practice anyway. On top of that, take a look at the pictures in any Yoga book and what do you see? Pencil-thin people twisting their bodies into impossible (to you and me...and I DO Yoga) positions. No way!

Let's go back to the statement I mentioned. To get to the level where they are selected to pose for pictures for a book, they usually have had to practice for several years. When they started, some of them were as out-of-shape as you think you are now. You can bet they made a lot of mistakes along the way and some of them often thought of giving up because they weren't able to perform the asanas the way their teachers did...or the way it was done in a picture in some book. Nobody is going to begin Yoga today and be able to do the positions that way right away.

Also, not everyone is going to be able to achieve the level of skill that they have achieved. Some of us just aren't going to realize that potential for a long time and maybe never.

So why bother to learn Yoga?

After all, if you can't do what the books and instructors say to do, then you have failed, right?

Wrong.

First of all, simply moving into your best imitation of the perfect position can begin to produce the health benefits associated with Yoga. Second, learning yoga breathing techniques and practicing this as you perform the movements and asanas (not to mention you daily activities) can also produce benefits in both your mental and physical health. Finally, continued practice of the asanas, breathing, and movements will, over time, move you closer to being able to do what the person in the picture was doing.

Remember, nobody said you had to be able to touch your toes, you just have to reach for them, breathe properly, and do it again tomorrow.

Yoga is actually simple and easy to learn, and can produce some startling affects in both mental and physical health.
