Article by Jenny Franklin

Manali tours are very famous for the diverse facets and the different tourist attractions that are experienced for sheer pleasure of mind and soul, amidst the chilling weather and awesome landscape. Manali the most attractive district of Himachal Pradesh is a place endowed with heavenly bliss. The nature alone can captivate the minds of those who dare to visit the place especially in the winters. Snowcapped mountain peaks along with the beautiful Beach River has made the place perfect for spending a complete vacation. Various holiday packages are available and thus it is absolutely easy to get the best deal within budget. Situated in the region of Himalayas, Manali has a cold weather round the year.

Another advantage is the high altitude of the place which helps in maintaining a pleasant weather for almost throughout the whole year and it is just appropriate for spending a few days or even a complete vacation here. Temples, monasteries along with various different tourist spots and a good number of adventure sports are available in Manali. This is the reason why tourists not only from India but also from other parts of the world feel attracted towards this place. The temples and monasteries in Manali bear the rich culture of the Tibetans who reside in this district.

The Buddhist monasteries of Manali are very popular among the tourists. Manali is a place where both adventure as well as pilgrimage tours are being conducted for the tourists with diverse preferences. So many Tibetan monasteries can be seen in this place because of the fact that the Tibetans residing here are quite large in number. The distinct religious significance of the Tibetans and the ancient values related to these monasteries can be felt while visiting these Gompas.

Therefore the various monasteries of Manali are considered as the important tourist spots. The Gadhan Thekchoking Monastery along with two other Gompas are generally maintained by the neighboring people. The chief source of maintaining t! he monas tery is the funds and donations that are being collected by these people. The Tibetan handicrafts as well as the carpets that are sold in these monasteries, form the most exquisite part of visiting these places. The Gadhan Thekchoking Gompa is typically based on the Tibetan style. There is another monastery which is situated in Manali and is known as the Himalayan Nyingamapa Gompa. The structure of the monastery reflects a more contemporary style in comparison to the Gadhan Thekchoking Gompa.

While visiting the Himalayan Nyingamapa Gompa, the tourists can view the enormous statue of Lord Buddha. Another most significant fact about the monasteries is the incense sticks made by the Tibetans. The aroma of these sticks can readily captivate the mind and soul of the tourists. The monasteries are quite well-maintained by these people from the local community. The pure and calm atmosphere that prevails all the time within these monasteries can make the tourists absolutely amazed. These monasteries of Manali are generally considered within the itinerary of most of the Manali tours.

Attainment of Happiness Through Stress Management

Posted: 04 Feb 2012 10:00 AM PST

Article by Dave Vower

The word stress is derived from the Latin word 'stringere' meaning to tighten and is defined as the failure of the body to respond to a perceived physical or emotional threat. There are a number of ways in which stress is likely to manifest itself and while the immediate manifestation may be in form of alarm and exhaustion the long term manifestation occurs in form of irritation, headaches and lack of concentration.

The term stress management refers to the ways and means of handling stress so as to mitigate its affect on the individual's behaviour. Since stress is a common part of everyone's life, it is imperative for an individual to learn how to mange it effectively in order to live calmly as well as peacefully. The first step in stress management is to be able to identify the symptoms of stress as soon as they occur and these may be broadly classified into four broad categories namely physical, emotional, cognitive and behavioural. Sometimes when the symptoms are not identified well in time they may aggravate into serious ailments like hypertension, gastrointestinal disorders, asthma and high blood pressure. The other types of ailments which may also occur due to stress are migraine, diabetes, indigestion as well as enhancement in the level of cortisol within the body. In order to avoid such health problems, one must indulge in stress management through the following techniques:

- Relaxation techniques like meditation, yoga, deep breathing, progressive and fractional relaxation play a very instrumental role in relieving stress.

- Time management techniques like daily, weekly and monthly planning are believed to reduce the incidence of stress to a very great extent.

- Distractions in form of hobbies like artistic expression as well listening to calm and soothing music can help to alleviate the level of stress in an individual.

- Since conflicts in the work-place are a well known cause of stress, conflict resolution techniques should be resorted to as a preventive m! easure a gainst stress.

- Physical fitness through exercise as well as mental fitness through positive and creative thinking often reduces stress to a great extent.

In case the level of stress has increased to a point where it is beyond the above mentioned measures, then one should opt for stress reduction and stress management through therapies, natural medicines and alternative methods of treatment.

Adventures in Voluntary Simplicity (Simple Living)- Part I (Introduction)

A video montage created specifically to accompany an audio Plunderphonics track, created in 2008 on the topic of voluntary simplicity. Voluntary simplicity is a lifestyle or philosophy characterized by significantly reduced or minimal amounts of consumption. Voluntary simplifiers do so for a variety of personal reasons, including spirituality, health, increase in 'quality time' with family and friends, reducing their ecological footprint, stress reduction, personal taste or frugality. In Duane Elgin's words, "voluntary simplicity is a manner of living that is outwardly more simple and inwardly more rich, a way of being in which our most authentic and alive self is brought into direct and conscious contact with living." This video is part of a 4-video series focusing on Voluntary Simplicity. Sanchi Stupa – A Sacred Place for Buddhist

Posted: 04 Feb 2012 09:00 AM PST

Article by Ayush

Emperor Asoka (273-236 B.C.) built stupas in Buddha's honour at many places in India. Stupas at Sanchi are the most magnificent structures of ancient India. UNESCO has included them as one of the heritage sites of the world. Stupas are large hemispherical domes, containing a central chamber, in which the relics of the Buddha were placed. Sanchi stupas trace the development of the Buddhist architecture and sculpture at the same location beginning from the 3rd century B.C. to the 12th century A.D.

Asoka when he was a governor married Devi, the daughter of a respected citizen of Vidisha, a town 10 km from the Sanchi hill. Prince Mahendra visited Sanchi with his mother before leaving for the island of Lanka for taking Buddhism there. Emperor Asoka had put up at Sanchi a pillar edict and a stupa containing relics of the Buddha. Addition of new stupas and expressions in stone of legends around the life of the Buddha and the monastic activities at the Sanchi hill continued under several dynasties for over fifteen hundred years. Also, the Brahmi script could be deciphered from the similarities in inscriptions carved at different places in the main stupa.

Sanchi stupas are noteworthy for their gateways as they contain ornamented depiction of incidents from the life of the Buddha and his previous incarnations as Bodhisattvas described in Jataka tales. Sculptors belonging to different times tried to depict the same story by repeating figures. The Buddha has been shown symbolically in the form of tree or through other inanimate figures. One of the sects of Buddhism opposed depiction of the Buddha by a human figure.

The top of the Asoka pillar, which comprises of four lions, has been kept in the museum maintained by the Department of Archaeology. The size and the weight of the pillar point to advanced construction technology that was existent at the time of Asoka. It must have been an incredible feat of engineering to bring the stone for carving the pillar from the mine to Sanchi and inst! alling i t up the hill.

Jataka Tales:

Jataka tales as do Aesop's fables teach generosity and self-abnegation based on previous lives of the Buddha as Bodhisattvas. As a Bodhisattva he took births as man, animal or bird. It is believed that the Buddha accumulated virtue by good deeds he did as Bodhisattvas and had attained merit for achieving nirvana in his last birth when he was born as the prince Siddhartha.

Six-tusked Elephant Jataka

The Great Monkey Jataka

The Vessantra Jataka

The Sama Jataka

Six-tusked Elephant Jataka:

In one of his previous births the Bodhisattva was born as a six-tusked elephant. He lived in the Himalayas with his two female elephant wives named Chulasubhudha and Mahasubhudha . Chulsubhudha despised her husband as she thought that he loved his other wife more than her. She prayed that in her next life she may be born a beautiful girl and have the good fortune of marrying the king of Varanasi. Her deep jealousy and the desire to take revenge from her husband resulted in her death. As she had wished, she was born in her next birth a beautiful girl and became the wife of the king of Varanasi. She feinted illness and pleaded her husband to ask Sonuttar, the king's archer, to bring for her the tusks of the six-tusked elephant. The hunter wounded the six-tusked elephant with arrows and tried to pull out his tusks. The elephant took pity on the hunter and helped him in pulling out his tusks. When the tusks were given to the queen she repented her wanton act and died out of grief.

Respeceting Tibetan Buddhist

Posted: 04 Feb 2012 08:00 AM PST

Article by Nuhsh

Lingza Chokyi was born in Kham, Eastern Tibet. She had been seriously ill for sixteen days, and neither religious rites nor medications could help her. She thought, "I might be dying now. When I was young, I wanted to become a nun, but my family prevented me from leaving home. I received some Dharma teachings, but I have very little experience, as my meditation has been minimal. I haven't done any charitable giving either. Alas, I wasted my whole precious human life, which is so rare to attain and so full of potential. Now I am leaving the human world of great potential empty-handed. It is too late to feel regret."Then she thought, "In the past, my family has been involved in killing twenty to thirty yaks and sheep every year." This worried Chokyi because taking the life of any living being is one of the ten major misdeeds in Buddhism, creating negative karmas that become the cause of suffering and hellish rebirth for the perpetrator. She further worried, "Now they will not sponsor any Dharma services for me. That means I will have to face the consequences of only evil deeds, with no benefit of any virtuous deeds or merits. My husband and children love material possessions. They are tight-fisted and have very little faith. But despite all this, I must ask them what Dharma services they might sponsor for me."Chokyi called her family to her side and told her husband, "I won't survive this sickness. Now I have my last few words to tell you. I haven't accumulated any merits in my life. Instead, I committed many evil deeds here and there. Please spend one-third of the family property to make merits for me." In the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, survivors of a deceased person spend a large portion of the family's property to sponsor ceremonies, prayers, meditations, feeding of the poor, ransoming life (for example, by buying and freeing domestic animals, birds, or fish), building religious monuments, or making offerings to monks and nuns. They believe the such deeds will create merits, or positive karma, w! hich in turn becomes the source of a peaceful and joyful journey and rebirth for the deceased. "Half my jewelry should go to our daughter," she continued, "and the other half should be spent on making merits. Whatever services you sponsor for me, please make sure they are done in a pure Dharma way All of you must do some Dharma practice if you can. Otherwise, regret will torment you when you die. At least let my two sons do some Dharma practice. Please, don't let my three children suffer at the hands of another woman by remarrying. Promise me these things!"At this her husband said, "If we spend one-third of the property for you, what will we eat? Our daughter will need your jewelry for herself. After your death, I will have to marry again in order to keep up the household. The children are too young to stand on their own feet. I will spend something for you, but I can't promise how much." Chokyi thought, "Now he won't sponsor any big Dharma service for me. Why didn't I make some merits myself, when I had the chance and the ability? He is going to remarry, and the children will suffer. How pitiful they are!"This exchange made Chokyi sadder. The sadness brought a feeling of dizziness. Next she felt she was being pulled down into the earth, and she began to go through a number of frightening experiences. She felt that she was being pushed down by the force of many people, wobbling here and there in a big space, and shivering with freezing cold. Then she suffered from the sense that her body was being burned at a cremation ground, seeing the sparks of fire and hearing the roar of flames. When that feeling subsided, she was blown away by a strong storm. Then shefelt her body being cut into pieces by many people with various tools. All these apprehensions were merely the result of the dissolving of the elements of her body. After all these feelings, she experienced the visions of redness, whiteness, and darkness. This was followed by a feeling of absence of recollection or consciousness, which was a steady state of bl! issfulne ss. Later, after reviving, she could not remember how long that experience had lasted.

Colonial Flavor, Buddhist Influences, Pagodas, Lakes and Oriental Charm; it just has to be Yangon

Posted: 04 Feb 2012 07:00 AM PST

Article by Exotissimo Traveler

The colonial charm, the sprawling parks, its soothing lakes, all within the confines of massive golden pagodas. This can only be Yangon. If you are coming in and out of Myanmar, you will most likely have to spend some time here. And since you are here, why not make the most of it? Not only does the country's biggest city serve as a great introduction to the country, it is also home to a wide range of attractions and experiences, enough to give you unprecedented and long lasting memories of the former capital.

Yangon is a mixture of cultures; you have the Burmese walking side by side with people of Chinese, Indian and even British heritage. All that culmination of cultures combine to form a city filled with interesting sites.

There are two ways to explore the city. If you just want to see the main ones and cram it all in one day, a car tour would suffice. That may just be the option for you if you have just one day here. But if you are spending more time here, perhaps you are more interested in something more detailed. The city is a walker friendly one and by doing so, you'll also get to absorb the atmosphere, meet the people and get up close to the sights and sounds that make Yangon the unique city that it is.

Shwedagon Pagoda:

You can reserve to see Shwedagon Pagoda either at the beginning or the end of your tour, but one thing is certain, you cannot miss out on this site. This is perhaps the city's, if not, the country's most iconic attraction. You can believe in its legend, stating that the site is over 2500 years old, or in its archeological findings, stating that the pagoda was first conceived at around the 6th century.

You can be assured your visit here is unique. Unlike most other religious sites, this one combines the spiritual and secular aspects of Burmese life together in one place. You'll see devoted pilgrims and religious people on the floor praying while young children can be seen playing and adult Burmese engaged in social activity nearby.

Sule P! agoda:

Not to be outdone by its more famous pagoda cousin, this city-center monument also deserves your attention. Get this, according to legend; Sule was built even before Shwedagon. Not only is the 46 meter high pagoda one of the city's main monumental attractions, its downtown location makes it a landmark as well. If you get lost in Yangon, just look for Sule, Yangon's dependable city center landmark.

National Museum:

Myanmar, let alone its history, is a mystery to many folks out there. Gain further insight of the country with a visit at the National Museum. Step into a time machine and delve into the country's history proud history, even going as far back as pre-historic times. The place is quite roomy, consisting of 14 halls spread across 4 floors. Who needs history books?

Kandawgyi Lake:

Want to truly capture the Burmese at play? There's no better place than here. Surrounding the lake is a huge recreational area, which in itself consists of a zoo, an aquarium and an amusement park. The Lake is also known for its Karaweik, a replica of a traditional Burmese royal boat, in the southwestern tip of Kandawgyi. Need a place to relax? Looks like you've found the place at Kandawgyi Lake.

Inya Lake:

Welcome to Yangon's largest lake. How big is the body of water? It will take you about two hours to circumnavigate your way around the lake's shorelines. This is another popular park and recreational area where locals enjoy hanging out. Quite understandably, a lot of the shoreline consists of prime, expensive properties, the most famously of which is the residence of Aung San Suu Kyi.

Bogyoke Aung San Market (Scott Market):

Absorb the combo colonial and Burmese feel at one spot when you step in here. And quite fittingly, it has two names, one English colonial and one local Burmese. The place is quite well known for its faded European style architecture, inner cobblestone roads and its Burmese environment. These facts alone has made it a major attraction in Yangon. Bu! t don't forget, this is also a lively market. Step in and bargain for some nice items, ranging from antiques, clothing and coins, to souvenirs and other local merchandise.

Yangon Circular Train:

All aboard, the Yangon Circular Train! We suggest recapping your Yangon experience aboard this slow moving yet environment absorbing train. The track starts from the city center, heads out into the outskirts, passing villages, rural settlements and the countryside, finally looping back to the starting point. The rail system consists of 39 stations, is about 46 kilometers in length and is approximately four hours in travel time. Which is more than enough time for you to absorb the environment, the various people coming in and out of the train and the verdant scenery that passes you by.

These are just some of the highlights in Yangon. A walking tour could very well take you to some others, such as the city's Chinatown, Chaukhtetgyi Pagoda and its 70 meter long reclining Buddha statue and Kaba Aye Pagoda within which is the Buddhist Art Museum and Maha Pasana Cave. Even aspiring yoga practitioners and meditation devotees will be satisfied, especially when visiting the Mahasi Meditation Center or the International Meditation Center. If just wandering around and admiring the faded colonial structures in a purely Asian city is your thing, then Yangon is the city to be in.

Find out more with our dedicated Yangon and Surroundings tour. That's right, we'll throw in some fascinating destinations just outside of Burma's biggest city in this tour as well.

Raja Hatha yoga meditation

Posted: 04 Feb 2012 06:00 AM PST

Article by Beyond-meditation

Raja yoga meditation is the real path of achieving success in yoga and establishing equilateral relationship between our mind, body and soul. Body is externally appearing, mind resides inside it and our spirit is in the deepest core. Soul has three subcategories and there are: consciousness, intellect and sub consciousness. Thoughts originate in our subconscious and flow into the conscious mind, during this phenomenon, feelings and emotions are created as byproducts. Feeling binds our thoughts. Intellect acts like a controller, so allows only positive and friendly thoughts to play in our mind and affect our body accordingly. Raja Yoga meditation is so highly practiced because it drives to the destination of enlightenment and directs control and mastery of the mind. This approach makes Raja Yoga an extremely challenging and difficult practice to involve in. Raja yoga aims to control the body and breathe to stabilize our prana that in turn calms the mind. Raja Yoga is often quoted as classical yoga or Hatha Raja yoga as it was the oldest system of yoga which finally developed into scientific and systematic culture. "Raja yoga" is initiated by Patanjali, who learn yoga for enlightenment in the fresh environment of Himalayas. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali break down the practice of Raja yogic meditation into eight limbs or sub-practices. The first four limbs are referred to as the external limbs and the remaining four are named as internal. Four external limbs are: Yama, Niyama, Asana and Pranayama. Yama and Niyama are the yogic laws of right conduct and lifestyle. Yama includes truth speaking, feeling of non-violence, love and respects for others, honesty and non-covetousness. Niyama is for developing positive self-encouraged activities, and includes discipline, purity, contentment, self-study as well as devotion to supernatural being. According to raja yoga Vivekananda, the third limb, Asana means simply finding our comfortable yet stable sitting position before performing yoga practice. Forth limb! of yoga is Pranayama, the science of yogic breathing. Patanjali suggests the Raja yogi to observe and slow the breath down to the point where one cannot distinguish between the inhalation and the exhalation. After preparing for external yoga, one proceeds towards the practice of internal limbs of yoga: Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi. Pratyahara is the drawing of the mind's concentration away from the external senses to the inner sensations. When the mind draws inwards, Dharana is used to focus our mind on a single object, which is often breathing. This time the practice becomes challenging, keeping the mind focused and preventing attachment with thoughts. When one acquires the ability to focus the mind only on breathing to the point of being totally absorbed in it, then next limb called Dhyana or meditation begins. Finally, the uninterrupted practice of Dhyana leads to the last limb, Samadhi. Enlightenment, this means ultimate bliss or renunciation. At this stage of raja yoga meditation, yogi is completely free from all types of cosmic attachments.

Weight Gain and Stress - How are they Related

Posted: 04 Feb 2012 02:00 AM PST

Article by Carole Isle

It has been proven that stress is one of the major factors for us being overweight as it is one of the main causes of sleep deprivation & comfort eating

Of course it is easy to point the finger at the usual worries but stress can manifest itself in many ways and can be caused by subtle pressures on our already hectic day-to-day lives. So here are some top tips to help you deal with everyday stress.

Schedule your day. At the start of the day, take time to think about what you really have to do on this day and write a list of your priorities. This allows you to plan the most important tasks and allows you to avoid being over-burdened. An hour's planning in a quiet place can be the equivalent to two hours disorganised work. Noise and chaos will make your work less efficient and will therefore lead to stress.

Delegate. Those of us who micro-manage (or take on too much of a workload) tend to be more likely to suffer from stress. Learn to let go and don't feel that you have to do everything yourself. Sharing responsibility with others and accepting that you can't do everything isn't a weakness, its actually good management, plus more can be achieved with sensitive delegation and teamwork.

Work pattern. Start one job, complete it, then move on to the next one. Attempting more than one task at the same time is counter-productive and stress-inducing. Quite often, doing one task well could mean that other, less-important tasks are cancelled out.

Take a break. Allow yourself to "switch off". A brisk walk will help you order your thoughts, enable you to plan the rest of your day and put what has happened during the day into perspective. Reading a book or engaging in other cultural activity can exercise the brain, feed new ideas and help with a new sense of achievement.

Have a regular spring clean. Allocate 15 minutes a day to tidy your home - get other family members to pitch in too, as sometimes, rather than being a sanctuary, our homes can be a major source of stress! . Money concerns and household chores are the usual culprits, so there is something in the saying "a tidy house means a tidy mind". De-cluttering your home can de-clutter your mind, so why not have a regular clear out of unwanted items? Knowing where everything is in your home helps stop feelings of disorganisation which contribute to stress.

Make time for friends and family. Having regular contact with loved ones often helps resolve problems. Chatting through issues or just enjoying the company of friends is a great de-stresser. Isolation and loneliness can lead to tension and depression.

Exercise. Exercise not only protects you against stress but is also a great stress buster, as "feelgood" chemicals released in the brain help to keep energy levels up and help defend the body against stress. Walk whenever you can - the great outdoors with its natural light and fresh air will boost energy levels and your "feelgood" factor. Exercising with people you know is much more fun and can become a social activity; the more time you spend communicating and sharing worries with other people - especially those close to you - the better.

Make time for yourself. Treat yourself with a visit to a spa or simply take a hot bath with your favourite essential oils as a pampering treat. Enjoying a professional massage is an excellent way to ease the build-up of tension, as is meditation time. This is sure to bring your stress levels down.

KNOW YOUR BODY. If your skin is deteriorating in quality, this is a sure sign of elevated tension levels as stress is a high-energy user and deprives your skin of the necessary nutrients. Feeling constantly tired can be due to low energy levels which are again linked to stress. It's also crucial to learn the early signs of stress, some people develop a headache, while others get ratty or upset - this is a sign to stop.Take five minutes to breath and collect your thoughts. It sounds simple but taking a few seconds to stop what you're doing, breathing deeply four or five times! using y our abdominal mussels. Get into the habit of doing this every time you feel stressed, after a while your body gets so used to breathing deeply whenever it goes into stress mode that you'll do it automatically.

Sleep. A very important factor for the proper function of our bodies. Stress is often the culprit of sleep deprivation which in turn causes us to put on weight. Try not to do any work for two hours before going to sleep as this stimulates the brain and makes sleeping more difficult. Don't eat too late either, as this affects your sleep pattern. Aim for eight hours of sleep each night and enjoy feeling refreshed.

Assess your diet. Our bodies and our minds cope better with stressful situations if they are getting the right foods. A lack of essential vitamins and minerals can cause a variety of problems such as lack of concentration, fatigue and bad moods. Aim for five portions of fruit and vegetables every day as these are full of antioxidants and their vitamin C can help prevent the damage caused by stress.

Vitamin B. Red meat - despite many peoples' fears - is excellent for boosting levels as it helps pump oxygen around your body.

Carbohydrates. Labelled as the enemy of dieters, carbohydrates are the main source of energy in the body. The brain is the most important organ in the body so feed it. Bread, pasta, rice and potatoes trigger the release of feel-good chemicals in your brain but avoid meat and protein products mixed with carbohydrates.

Water. Consuming drinks like coffee, coke or alcohol won't help with stress reduction as they release adrenalin which increases stress levels. Drinking lots of water is a must, eight glasses a day will make you feel more energised and healthier. If exercising, remember that hydration is vital.

Enjoyment. Last, but by no means least, life is not all about money, work, children, losing weight. If yoga used to be your thing, get yourself back to a class - it doesn't have to be terribly time consuming - just spend an hour or tw! o re-est ablishing who you are and what you like. If you enjoy films, go to the cinema, if you enjoy music or reading, lock yourself away with your favourite CDs or book. Allotting time for pleasurable activities is an essential key to the work/life balance. One thing one must never end up thinking is, "What have I done with my life?"

Holiday Stress Tips

Posted: 04 Feb 2012 12:00 AM PST

Article by Michael Logan

Holiday stress tip #1-

If you do not actually have a saber tooth tiger leaping towards you, and you are feeling that jittery feeling in your gut, then it is your thought about something (or several things) that is bringing the stress physiology into your body.

To change the physiology, simply change the thought.

Sounds simple doesn't it?

There are some complicating factors that I do not see addressed in many stress management programs or trainings which I think are important for holiday stress management or any other time of the year stress management.

If you are not actually in danger from an aggressor, then it is your thought that brings the stress response into your body.

For example, when I look at my social calendar for the month of December, I find myself scheduled to attend a number of social functions, which I would prefer not to attend.

So the thought about being in a crowd of people, none of whom will attack me by the way, several weeks ahead of time will bring an uncomfortable feeling into my body, which will be strong enough for me to notice.

That is a stress response, and when I decide that I would prefer to feel something else besides stress, then I will need to deal with...

Holiday Stress Tip #2-

The physiology of stress, especially for men, if it has been strong, can take about 20 minutes to clear from the body.

That is why a time out process can be important for stress reduction.

John Gottman,Ph.D., talks about what he calls Diffuse Physiological Arousal in his workshop The Art and Science of Love, describing the stress response to a tee.

What Gottman does not mention is that my stress response is designed to come on line fast and strong, to motivate a leap away from the tiger.

Mihalyi Csikszentmihaly, Ph.D., in his book FLOW says the human central nervous system processes packages of data, sound waves, photons for vision, pressure for touch, tastes, smells, ect. at the rate of a package every 1/1! 8th seco nd.

Paul Ekman,Ph.D. says that we respond to facial expressions in perhaps 1/25th second, and Micheal Merzenich,Ph.D. says Senior Drivers need to process changing road conditions in 1/45th second.

It takes me about 1/10th second to blink my eyes.

The point is that the stress response happens fast, and it takes some time to change your physiology back to calm if the diffuse physiological response was strong.

Stress management programs need to teach that information, so that folks who are using visualization or breathing or a combination of those stress management techniques do not give them up because they do not experience an immediate return to a Norman Rockwell vision of the holidays, which feels like calmness and contentment.

I do think that if I have practiced breathing and visualization techniques, for example, Open Focus, from Les Fehmi, then my body may return to a resting state faster than it would if I were just beginning my practice. What News is There From the Research? Are there holiday stress tips from recent research? Yes, there is and the most promising, in my experience, is based on technology from the new field of neurocardiology, which is the study of the heart's own nervous system.

With some practice, I can teach my heart to change the coherence or time between heart beats from incoherent to coherent much faster than the 20 minutes that Dr. Gottman talks about in his DPA descriptions.

And this process, called heart rate variability biofeedback, works in the proverbial heart beat, using thinking and breathing tools, so as I contemplate my December social schedule, and bring a stress response, way ahead of time, I can do my heart rate variability biofeedback and return my feelings to quiet contentment now.

I have been using heart rate variability biofeedback with anger management and domestic violence clients for about 8 years, because it helps me show clients, using the computer's feedback, how fast thoughts change physiology, either in a h! elpful o r unhelpful direction, and how simple it is to sustain long periods of heart rate variability coherence by choosing to think cooperative and affiliative thoughts more often than not.

Heartmath does not require one to become a guru, and chant a mantra, it fits with our life style and busy schedules.

Once I train the brain in my heart to become coherent, I can think my cue thought and breath deeply and feel a very pleasant feeling in my body, a feeling so different than an unnecessary stress response.

I can do this process every five minutes for 2 heart beats, and begin to steer my physiology towards the kind of physiology that encourages neurogenesis, or the growth of new brain cells, and neuroplasticity, which is the growth of new connections between neurons.

Increased brain fitness is a side effect of Heartmath? Sure is, and if you are an athlete or a student, the key to peak performance is relaxation, not stress.

Holiday Stress Tip #3-Learn and do heart rate variability biofeedback. It took me six 1/2 hour practices to make a serious improvement in my ability to cue the relaxation without a computer. You will feel it happening.

Cheers: The world's happiest iPhone app

The Cheers app for iPhone is definitely a morning person. It's the kind of app that hops out of bed, says hello to the singing bluebirds at the window, and then goes for a jog to pick up a mocha at a favorite local coffee shop.

Cheers screenshot

Cheers is relentlessly cheerful. (Click to enlarge.)

(Credit: Screenshot by Amanda Kooser/CNET)

There are heaps of social-media apps that let you check in at restaurants or recommend businesses to your friends. Cheers follows that example, but flings the door wide open and encourages you to share your love for people, places, and things.

Cheers is positioning itself as a positivity app. You build up your "cheerfluence" rating as you go.

That may mean sending out cheers for a mother who made you soup while you were sick, a deli sandwich that rocked your lunchtime, or a book that made you cry--in a good way.

Just take a picture of the object of your affection, fill in a few details, and send it off. The app can be set to share your virtual shout-outs to Facebook, Twitter, and over e-mail.

Cheers should find a solid crossover audience with people who have extensive Hello Kitty collections, as well as anyone who believes that Thelma and Louise survived their airborne trip into the Grand Canyon.

This is a sweetly enjoyable little app, but it's likely to vie for space on your iPhone with your regular Twitter, Facebook, Foodspotting, and Foursquare apps. However, if you're looking for a little extra dose of cheerfulness, it will do the trick.

Cheers is launching for free on February 9. That will give you time to come up with a list of all the people, places, and things you want to share a virtual hug with.

Through the Eastern Gate

What moves young, educated people to give up lives of material security for a spiritual quest that confronts uncertainty? Filmed in the gorgeous countryside and ancient cities of India and Turkey, Through the Eastern Gate is a compelling documentary following the journeys of three young people who have turned their backs on the material comforts and distractions of the West to find meaning in the spiritual philosophies of the East. Sister Yeshe Chodron's journey leads her from Australia to the foothills of the Himalayas and life as a Buddhist nun. On a riverbank in southern India, Ronela Vainio, a native of Finland, immerses herself in tantric yoga. Lastly, Californian Aziz Abbatiello discovers his calling as a Sufi dervish in Turkey, where he prays, sings, and spins himself into spiritual ecstasy. The idyllic settings in which these young people practice their disciplines sharply contrast the cramped landscape of the West and the often aimless lifestyle of their peers. The lives of the three spiritual novices, however, are not without challenges. They must leave their family behind and make material sacrifices. Ronela admits, "My family still wonders why I wanted to go so far away, why I don't live like a normal human being." In addition, attaining true spirituality requires tremendous effort and the patience to delve deep beneath the surface and not be distracted by the trappings of this world. "It's easy to go around in circles", says Aziz, "but to empty yourself of ...

Connection of Meditation and emotions

Emotions play a vital role in human life and without them the human being is nothing but dead. But at the same time excess emotions and actions accompanying those emotions can create havoc in life.

However, some of these basic natural emotions are suppressed most of the time for various reasons. We suppress our emotions of joy, love, anger, tearful, lust, fear, etc. sometimes to hide our embarrassments in front of people or sometimes to stay within the norms of the society or sometimes suppress it because we were taught or believe that these emotions should not be expressed. This is absolutely fine unless these would not cause trouble for you. And the news is that they do cause trouble if they are not expressed more often.

It might be difficult to know this and suppress it all the time since it might not be possible everywhere and all the time. So best would be to release these pent up emotions for your well being during meditation. Many meditate or learn meditation to help release these emotions. Whether one likes it or not, one will find a lot of emotions surfacing up during meditation. Many get irritated with these, many try to suppress it further or get worried and most quit meditation. It is important to note that it is normal and natural for emotions to surface while meditating. Never suppress them or drive them away. In fact, since you are obviously going to be alone while meditating and undistracted, this is the best time for you to release the pent up emotions in the best way you can. Those thoughts that surface up are not distraction but actually your own emotions trying to find a way out. So release them. You may laugh it out, cry it out, fret it out, shout it out or express it in whichever way your soul is longing to do at that moment. This might look odd for those who have the habit of suppressing and hiding everything but then they will be surprised to see how they feel after they have released it.

Many people new to meditation will find these thoughts and emotion! s annoyi ng but knowing that they do not want to do anything to you but leave you will help you treat them with calmness. It is important not to react to them adversely or in a negative way for if done so, they spoil the very purpose of meditation. Reacting to them results in being caught in a web of thoughts that slowly becomes so overwhelming that one has to give up sitting there with closed eyes and shrunken forehead. Rather what can be done is allow these thoughts and emotions to come up and go with the flow required in those moments. When meditation is practiced in this manner, one will notice that the thoughts and emotions eventually go on decreasing thus improving your quality of meditation and also releasing a lot of unwanted stuff causing congestion in your mind, body and soul.

Swimming pools can create a whole new experience in your backyard. Swimming pool design, from simple to elaborate, has interior decorators are overflowing with new ideas for your home. The basic rectangle and kidney shape designs have evolved into themed multi-tiered dams, desert oases, tropical ponds and meadow lakes. Today, your pool can become a wall-less wonder, reaching out to the view beyond. Enormous new products for cleaning, sanitizing and heating pools is endless.

Psychedelic robots and automatic chlorinators are but two popular innovations. Energy efficiency is also on many pool-owners minds and luckily the industry has responded. If you are considering putting in a new pool or looking for new maintenance options, here are your choices. If you are thinking of a new pool project, and want it to go beyond the basics, just follow the ideas which are given below,

Provide an infinity edge, edge of these pools seems to disappear, to blend into the landscape beyond. This design concept treats the pool as an extension of the home's natural surroundings. It is ideal for a backyard with unobstructed sweeping city or country views, since it draws your vision toward the "invisible" edge and the view beyond. At the pool's edge, water flows gently and evenly over a ledge into a catch trough so that the pool appears to have no walls. Extend new avenues for water to flow from its source or when it leaves the pool. Choices for faux stream and spillways vary from the slick architectural look of tile and concrete to pastoral scenes of water gently splashing over rocks.Showering swimmers under the sun, swimming pool waterfalls range from no splash falls with smooth linear designs to small-scale simulations of Niagara Falls. Some waterfalls are designed to pour off the edge of a platform extending over the pool, extending that shampoo-commercial experience and a secluded spot under which a swimmer can seek refuge or privacy. Bubbling fountains which are splashing into the air not only make a ! sound sh ield for your pool area, but also keep your pool clean and clear. The water's purr will be based on your choice of nozzle-from tight lipped, letting water slip out like glass, to wide mouthed, letting it splash.

In-ground or above-ground, vinyl-lined or fiberglass pools giving the same slick surface usually associated with a spain other words, no more scraped knees and elbows from rough plaster. The vinyl-lined variety comes in a kit for both in-ground and above-ground, perfect for DIY'ers; and the in-ground fiberglass, while a bit more pricey than concrete, is factory-made, available in one piece and necessitates fewer chemicals to maintain.

A thin film of oil on your pool's surface and the mineral deposits on tile that pool filters often miss disappear with this device. It will change these substances into larger particles so that the filter can pick them up. Simply strap it to the return line before the water enters the pool and your chlorine applications will be more efficient and unsightly scale and scum will be gone.

Affordable interior design :Self-propelling and able to slide up a pool's side, automatic pool cleaner offers pool owners more time to sit and dip. Models may vary from using oscillating brushes to pleated seals which scour up, down and all around. For instance, Sta-Rite, Polaris and Kreepy Krauly are some most favored models and Aqua Products makes psychedelic Aquabot Bravo in bright blue and yellow that lights up as it cleans.

Contact your power company for the names and brands of pumps which are energy efficient. Heat your pool using the solar energy. Water is pumped through solar collectors and deposited into your pool. Contraception should be covered by religious organizations

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 10:00 PM PST

Bizarre. Mystifying. Irrational. That's what religion is.

And that's also how I look upon the freak-out that erupted after the Obama administration required religious organizations (colleges, hospitals, etc.) which serve the general public to cover contraception, just like others who offer health insurance are required to do.

Note: contraception. Not abortion. Birth control pills, condoms, IUD's. The Institute of Medicine recommended that birth control be fully covered under health plans.

But, you know, the Institute of Medicine used facts, evidence, research, and common sense in reaching that conclusion, which weirds out faith-based folks. Preventing unwanted pregnancies saves lives, reduces abortions, and enables women to space out births, among other benefits (some medical conditions also are treated with birth control pills).

Yet a Catholic archbishop looks upon birth control this way:

During his lecture, Archbishop Dolan criticized people who postponed conception with "chemicals and latex," calling them part of the "culture of death."

Archbishop Dolan, you need to get out of the Dark Ages. Step into the light. And bring your 100% male Catholic leadership along with you. I have zero sympathy for religious crazies who fuss about being required to comply with laws that everyone else has to follow.

Well, make that almost zero.

Conscientious objectors to war, like Quakers, being able to perform some other service than fighting -- that makes sense to me. I'm also OK with doctors who are morally opposed to abortion not being required to perform that procedure.

But a religious institution offering birth control to employees and students of many different faiths who are covered by a health insurance plan is completely different. Nobody is being forced to use contraceptives who doesn't want to. Birth control simply is available at little or no cost to those who want to avail themselves of it.

A "religious conscience exemption" argument usually is a load of crap. Religious believers shouldn't be able to avoid laws just because they have a strongly held personal belief. Hey! We all have strongly held personal beliefs.

I haven't had a single bite of meat or fish since I became a vegetarian in 1970, forty-one years ago. I strongly believe in both the morality of not killing animals for food, and in the health benefits of vegetarianism.

But if a bunch of other vegetarians and me started a college which espoused our dietary beliefs, yet enrolled meat-eaters also, would it be fair if we required that anyone who got a student loan from the federal government couldn't buy a hamburger -- or any other animal flesh -- while they were associated with our college?

Most people would think that'd be ridiculous. But it's no more ridiculous than a Catholic hospital saying "We shouldn't have to provide our employees with birth control coverage under their health insurance plan."

Kevin Drum gets it right: "If You Take Taxpayer Money, You Have to Follow Taxpayer Rules."

I guess I'm tired of religious groups operating secular enterprises (hospitals, schools), hiring people of multiple faiths, serving the general public, taking taxpayer dollars — and then claiming that deeply held religious beliefs should exempt them from public policy. Contra Dionne, it's precisely religious pluralism that makes this impractical.

There are simply too many religions with too many religious beliefs to make this a reasonable approach. If we'd been talking about, say, an Islamic hospital insisting that its employees bind themselves to sharia law, I imagine the "religious community" in the United States would be a wee bit more understanding if the Obama administration refused to condone the practice.

Using Yoga To Reduce Excessive Sweating

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 09:00 PM PST

Article by Matthew Johnson

Although sweating is a normal human function, excessive sweating occurs when the body is over-compensating for a certain problem. For this reason, it can be helpful to find ways of rebalancing your body's systems. There is one form of exercise which aims to do just that. Yoga.

Yoga is an ancient discipline which combines breathing and movement. The aim of yoga is to harmonise your body and correct any imbalances. So it's possible that the regular practice of yoga could address the underlying cause of your symptoms - even if you don't know what the cause is.

Although most yoga is a slow and gentle practice, is it still a valid form of exercise and as such, brings about the positive benefits that come from any physical activity. These include a more efficient metabolism, improved overall fitness and the release of endorphins. All of these effects combine to make you feel good - physically, mentally and emotionally. These benefits will continue even after the session and help your body perform better, heal itself and boost your self-esteem.

Like all exercise, yoga is also an effective stress-buster. But when it comes to hyperhidrosis, yoga has an additional advantage. Regular yoga practice is great at inducing inner calm and emotional stability. So for those who sweat when they are anxious or nervous, it can help you feel calmer in those situations. And when you do find yourself in a stressful situation, your reduced anxiety will mean you're better able to handle it.

Although yoga can be a powerful exercise, it isn't normally associated with the frantic and sweaty workout of more aerobic exercises like step, circuits or spinning. For this reason, yoga classes may appeal more to those who want to avoid public situations where they are likely to perspire heavily.

However, there are forms of yoga that are more vigorous and fast-paced. Ashtanga is one of these (and Madonna's exercise of choice). There is also a type of yoga called Bikram yoga (or Hot Yoga) which is performe! d in hea ted rooms - so as to make you sweat more. But this could actually be a good thing for sufferers of excessive sweating. Firstly, everyone will be soaked through, so you needn't feel self-conscious. And secondly, sweating is one way the body tries to expel toxins. So getting hot and sweaty while you work out can speed can help this process. Then your body is under less pressure to 'sweat out' the toxins the rest of the time.

Yoga is far more than a series of random positions. The stretching, twisting, holding and breathing all have specific effects of different parts of your body. You can affect not just your muscles but your organs and immune system, too. So yoga is particularly effective at stimulating the digestive system. This is useful for sufferers of hyperhidrosis that is linked to weight issues, food intolerance or poor diet. Also, there are certain positions that help your body flush out toxins. This is helpful if your excessive sweating is a symptom of toxin-overload.

In short, yoga will improve your overall fitness, detoxify your system, boost your wellbeing and stabilise your anxiety. Since it addresses many of the health issues that lead to excessive sweating, yoga can be an effective route to not only reducing the symptoms, but also treating the cause.

Dying people talk about their family, not God

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 09:00 PM PST

I liked this post, "My Faith: What people talk about before they die," even though it's on CNN's belief blog. It shows that what's important to people isn't dogma, but life as it's lived with loved ones.

We don't live our lives in our heads, in theology and theories.  We live our lives in our families:  the families we are born into, the families we create, the families we make through the people we choose as friends.

This is where we create our lives, this is where we find meaning, this is where our purpose becomes clear.

Family is where we first experience love and where we first give it.  It's probably the first place we've been hurt by someone we love, and hopefully the place we learn that love can overcome even the most painful rejection.

This crucible of love is where we start to ask those big spiritual questions, and ultimately where they end.

Have a read.
