Question: What percentage of older men have erectile dysfunction?

Answer: The incidence of ED increases with age. Between 15 percent and 25 percent of 65-year-old men experience this problem. In older men, ED usually has a physical cause, such as a drug side effect, disease or injury. Anything that damages the nerves or impairs blood flow in the penis can cause ED.

The following are some leading causes of erectile dysfunction: diabetes, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), prostate surgery, hormone imbalance, alcohol and drug abuse.

And, of course, there are your emotions. It should be no surprise that, if you're having a relationship problem with your sex partner, you can suffer from ED. Here are some other psychological influences: anxiety over a previous failure, everyday stress, depression, and feeling unattractive to your partner. If you're suffering from ED, you should see your doctor for a discussion and physical exam.

Monitoring erections that occur during sleep can help the diagnosis. Healthy men have involuntary erections during sleep. If nocturnal erections do not occur, then ED is likely to have a physical rather than psychological cause. Tests of nocturnal erections are not completely reliable, however.

Mindfulness Meditation Handbook Buddhist Vipassana

In mantra and breath meditation, you focus on a word or your breath and try to empty your mind of everything else. This mental clearing is what most people mean when they refer to meditation.But there's another kind of meditation, a practice Buddhists call vipassana or sometimes called mindfulness, or insight meditation.

Mindfulness-based meditation is actually based on Buddhist Vipassana meditation. It was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in 1979 as a method for people to cope with chronic pain. Kabat-Zinn's Mindfulness meditation involves being "mindful" or aware of the continuously passing parade of sensations and feelings, images, thoughts, sounds, smells, and so forth of your immediate surroundings without becoming involved in thinking about them. Mindfulness meditation involves simply experiencing whatever thoughts goes through the mind, without reacting to them. By training your mind to observe, without reacting or thinking your mind becomes clear, and calm.Mindfulness meditation could be said to be opposite of concentrative meditation, in that while concentrative meditation involves zooming in and focusing on an object, sound or thought, when performing mindfulness meditation instead of narrowing your sight to a selected field you will be aware of the entire field. The intent of mindfulness meditation, besides clearing and calming the mind, is to (1) enable you to stop and appreciate life for all it has to offer and (2) to develop a skill that enables you to respond less impulsively and more effectively.

Types of Mindfulness Meditation

There are two kinds of mindful meditation - formal and informal. Yoga and Tai chi are two good examples of the formal type. In a yoga class, and during tai chi, participants focus intently on their breathing and the postures, moving slowly from one position to the next, exquisitely aware of their feelings during the process. Practitioners are taught to concentrate on their breathing and i! ts passa ge through the body as they dismiss any distracting thoughts.

Informal mindfulness meditation involves incorporating mindful approaches to moments of everyday life. A person takes a simple situation and merely observes it without promoting thoughts in a particular direction.

How to Perform Mindfulness MeditationThe practice of mindfulness meditation requires the person to be fully conscious of his or her surroundings while simply observing thoughts without making judgments about them and then moving on. The goal of mindfulness meditation is not to go into a trance, but rather to remain fully mindful and observe all of the surroundings but without acting on them. The key is to remain peacefully conscious without allowing your mind to wander or react to the thoughts. The easiest way to begin to train the mind for this type of meditation is to concentrate on your breathing and posture.After focusing intently on these things, you then expand your concentration to the thoughts. Do not try to repress or encourage these thoughts, just serve the thoughts and then move to the next.You can practice formal mindfulness meditation, which will also include a physical approach (concentrating on posture as well) or an informal approach where you just become mindful to moments of everyday life., simply observing without promoting thoughts in any particular direction (rememeber the wide angle lens approach). Though it sounds simple, mindfulness takes practice, and the longer you practice, the easier the process becomes. Studies also indicate that meditation can produce experience-based structural alterations in the brain,that may slow down the aging-related atrophy of certain areas of the brain. An imaging study led by Massachusetts General Hospita! l (MGH) researchers showed that particular areas of the cerebral cortex, the outer layer of the brain, were thicker in participants who were experienced practitioners of a type of meditation commonly practiced in the U.S. and other Western countries. The article appeared in the Nov. 15, 2008 issue of NeuroReport.

Komen Reverses Decision, Will Continue Funding for Planned Parenthood

The breast cancer research advocacy organization Susan G. Komen for the Cure will continue to provide grants to Planned Parenthood, according to a statement released this morning.

The statement marks a reversal of a decision earlier this week by Komen to sever its relationship with Planned Parenthood, a move widely criticized by the public and Komen affiliates.

Komen's funding has been used for breast cancer screening exams at Planned Parenthood clinics. 

"We have been distressed at the presumption that the changes made to our funding criteria were done for political reasons or to specifically penalize Planned Parenthood. They were not," the statement said. "We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities."

Komen announced Tuesday (Jan. 31) that would it stop funding Planned Parenthood because its grant policies excluded funding to organizations under investigation at the local, state or federal level.

Planned Parenthood is currently under investigation by Congressman Cliff Stearns, R-Fla. Steams says he is looking into the company's spending to make sure it is in compliance with restrictions on abortion funds, though some have called into question the motives of this investigation, saying it is an attempt to defund Planned Parenthood, which provides abortions.

Many criticized Komen's decision, saying the organization feared losing donations because of its connection with Parenthood.

Komen will now amend its funding criteria "to make clear that disqualifying investigations must be criminal and conclusive in nature, and not political. That is what is right and fair," the new statement says.

The statement continues:

"It is our hope and we believe it is time for everyone involved to pause, slow down and reflect on how grants can most effectively and directly be administered without controversies that hurt the cause of women. We urge everyone who has participated in this conversation across the country over the last few days to help us move past this issue. We do not want our mission marred or affected by politics – anyone's politics."

Decaf Coffee Benefits the Brain

Caffeine addicts may wonder: What's the point of decaf coffee? A new study suggests it may benefit the brain and protect against the mental decline that comes with aging and certain diseases.

In the study of mice with Type 2 diabetes, those that consumed decaffeinated coffee for five months were able to better utilize sugar in their brains than those who did not consume decaffeinated coffee.

Sugar metabolism — the breakdown of sugar by cells for energy — is often reduced in the brains of people with Type 2 diabetes, which can lead to cognitive problems. Similar impairments in sugar metabolism are seen in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease.

"This is the first evidence showing the potential benefits of decaffeinated coffee preparations for both preventing and treating cognitive decline caused by Type 2 diabetes, aging, and/or neurodegenerative disorders," study researcher Dr. Giulio Maria Pasinetti, professor of neurology and psychiatry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, said in a statement.

Although regular coffee has been found to bring a number of health benefits, including a reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease, diabetes and some cancers, it also contains caffeine, which poses risks for the heart. Caffeine can increase blood cholesterol and blood pressure — both risk factors for heart disease. The new study suggests some of the non-caffeine components of coffee also provide health benefits.

However, because the study was conducted in mice, scientists don't know whether the same will be true for people.

The researchers hope to study whether decaffeinated coffee can prevent age-related cognitive decline in people, Pasinetti said.

Pass it on: Decaffeinated coffee may protect against the cognitive decline that occurs with Type 2 diabetes and aging.

Dorje- The Tibetan Buddhist Symbol

At first glance, the Tibetan dorje symbol appears to be a weapon. But the dorje symbol is not a weapon, it is a ritual object. In Tibetan Buddhism, the dorje symbol is inseparable with the bell. In Tantric Buddhism, the bell represents the feminine, and the dorje represents the masculine, or the dorje represents a thunderbolt, and the bell represents a diamond. The bell can also represent the body, while the dorje represents the mind. In Buddhist ceremonies in Tibet, the bell and the dorje are always used together. The dorje can be used to strike the bell. When holding the dorje and bell together, the dorje is held in the right hand, and the bell is in the left hand.

The Tibetan Buddhist deity, Vajrasattva, is commonly shown holding the dorje in the right hand and the bell in the left hand. Other Buddhas who are pictured with the dorje are Vajrapani, and Padmasambhava. In Tibetan, dorje translates to 'noble stone.'

The dorje symbol came to Tibetan Buddhism from Hinduism. In Sanskrit, dorje is called 'vajra.' Vajra means, 'thunderbolt' or 'diamond,' and the vajra is indestructible. The vajra is like a diamond, because it can destroy, but it cannot be destroyed. The vajra represents spiritual power. In Hinduism, the vajra is the weapon of Indra (the god of rain, lightning, and the sky). The vajra symbol also destroys ignorance. The vajra is the symbol of Vajrayana Buddhism, one of the three major branches of Buddhism. Vajrayana Buddhism is also known as the 'Thunderbolt Way' or the 'Diamond Way.'

The vajra is often used as a tool in meditation. Practitioners can meditate on the vajra to achieve the 'thunderbolt experience.' The thunderbolt experience is a symbol of union of the relative and absolute truths. Relative truth is what we experience in everyday life, conversely, absolute truth is the timeless state of being unified with nature and everything around us. The bell and dorje symbol can also be meditated on, because we must balance both the masculine and feminine elements w! ithin us in order to reach enlightenment.

Each part of the dorje symbol has a certain meaning. The two spheres of the dorje joined together in the middle represent the two sides of the brain. This dual nature in the dorje itself can also represent the body, mind, or masculine, feminine, etc. Just as in other types of eastern philosophy and religion such as the yin yang symbol, this duality is represented in the dorje.

The spheres represents sunyata, the primordial nature of the universe. There are two sides of the dorje, and these represent two lotus flowers joined together, one side is for the phenomenal world (samsara), the other is for the noumenal world (nirvana). The three rings in the center of the dorje represent the spontaneous bliss of Buddha nature as emptiness, effortlessness, and signlessness. The eight upper petals represent the eight bodhisattvas, and the eight lower petals represent their consorts. Above the lotuses, there are three rings. These rings represent the six perfections, patience, generosity, discipline, effort, meditation, and wisdom.

The double dorje symbol is known as the vishvavajra. It is also known as the double cross. This symbol is made when two dorjes are mounted together. The double dorje symbol is often used as a stamp or a seal, and placed on the bottom of statues and pendants. When the dorje or the double dorje sign are worn as pendants, they remind the wearer of the indestructibility of knowledge.

In Hinduism, Indra's thunderbolt has open prongs. There is a legend that Shakyamuni took the vajra weapon from Indra and pressed the prongs together to make the dorje into a peaceful instrument rather than a weapon.

5 Myths Haunting Your Healthy Foods

These days, eating healthy has become a curiously difficult task. Despite the fact that the canons of healthy eating have not changed in centuries, the proliferation of health food products has continued unabated for years. It's become a crisis of abundance.

However, just because a product occupies shelf space in a boutique food store doesn't mean it's any better for you than its generic counterpart. Advertisers are very aware of the powers of "mood affiliation", which is the tendency to associate familiar claims with one another. For example, consumers are very likely to believe a food that has no cholesterol is very likely to have no fat as well, even though the two are unrelated.


This cognitive bias allows the food industry to make a variety of claims that confer fictitious health benefits, often resulting in higher prices and no value to you.

Let's take a look at the perpetrators.
  • Deception #1: Excessive Use of the Word "No" on Labels.
    The expectation that health foods contain no man-made ingredients is strongly held, and not without reason. However, health food manufacturers are much more likely to emphasize the lack of certain ingredients on their label, even when their commercial counterparts have the same qualities. For example, a Stanford professor compared the labels of 12 different brands of potato chips, and found that organic and specialty chips were 6 times more likely to emphasize the lack of ingredients such as soy, trans-fats, and cholesterol, even though this is just as true for Lays and Ruffles. There was no difference in health quality between the two groups of chips.

  • Deception 2: Organic ! Food Is Always Better
    Despite common perceptions, there's not a whole lot of evidence that the nutritional quality of organic food is much higher than non-organic food. This is because the term organic itself refers to particular manufacturing protocols used to make the food, and not necessarily the end product itself.

    However, people frequently commit attribution errors when making judgments about organic food. A study conducted at the University of Michigan found that people assume an organic product has less-calories than a similar non-organic product, which causes people eating processed organic food to consume more calories than they would have otherwise. In some cases the inferred benefits of eating organic extend beyond nutrition, and gives people a belief that they need to exercise less because they eat organic.

  • Deception 3: Fair Trade = Healthy
    The Fair Trade certification industry is guilty of two swindles:
    • #1: It doesn't help poor people (much).
    • #2: It has little relation to the nutritional content of the food.
    The Fair Trade certification industry is complicated to judge, mostly because it's a collection of heterogeneous agencies that have different criteria for assigning its badge. It's also become a profit channel more so than a statement of an organization's ethics.

    However, it's important to realize that most Fair Trade certification agencies (supposedly) grant their certification based on production inputs that bear no direct relation to the quality of food being produced, such as worker treatment and eco-friendly business practices. Much like the organic label, people mistakenly assume that Fair Trade means a food has less calories and more nutrients because it's Fair Trade, which isn't true.

  • Deception #4: Grass-Fed Beef
    Grass-fed beef has become popular in America, and it's purported benefits are that it has a more beneficial ratio of Omega-3/Omega-6 fatty acids, a higher concentration of anti-oxidants like superoxide dismutase, and lower levels of nitrates, which creates healthier beef.

    These health benefits are either non-existent or exaggerated.

    It's true that grass-fed beef has a higher concentration of omega-3 fatty acids and anti-oxidants than grain-fed beef, but the total amount of these and other nutrients in any kind of beef is very small compared to plant sources. To get the recommended 1.6 grams of omega-3 fatty acid a day from grass-fed beef alone, you'd have to eat 4.6 pounds of beef a day. The biggest health benefits of beef is its high protein content, and the minerals iron and zinc, which have a very high bio-availibility when consumed from meat. The differences between grass and grain-fed beef for these nutrients are not different from one another.

    And while it's true that grass-fed beef has a higher concentration of "good" fat like conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), these observations are typically made with raw meat, and it's usually lost after cooking. Similarly, the nitrate content in beef is influenced by many variables in the production process, such as the fertilizer used in the soil, run off from nearby water sources, and the moisture level the grass when it's eaten.

  • Deception #5: Going gluten-free is good for everyone
    About 1% of the western population has Coeliac's disease, which is an autoimmune disorder caused by a genetic modification to a peptide in the intestine which breaks down when it comes in contact with gluten based molecules. The consumption of gluten causes an inflammatory response within the intestine when it's ingested.

    If you are one of these people, by all means, avoid gluten. You're allergic to i! t.
    If you're not one of these people, relax a little bit, and do yourself a favor by being more discerning about food labels. It's true that gluten-intolerance is showing up with an increasing regularity, but it's still a small percentage of the population and partly caused by people's increased awareness of it.

    For the majority of the population, the presence or absence of gluten has little bearing on the quality of food being eaten. It's the diet fad du jour, but any diet approach that exclusively emphasizes a single variable is too simplistic.

    If you doubt this is the case for gluten, then consider the previous "single variable" diet fads popularized in the past: lactose, fat, sugar, etc. They've all been proven wrong.
Conclusion
The bottom line in all these myths is that people mistakenly assume various certifications as proxies for nutritional quality, but their presence bears no meaning to the quality of food you eat when you hold other things equal. The best way to ensure you're eating right is to consistently consume a diet of fresh foods with minimally processed ingredients, and spare yourself the confusion of deciphering the legitimacy of the latest fads of the health food industry.

With only 1100 square kilometres of land available to approximately 7 million people, Hong Kong has been popular for numerous things. The shopping with every imaginable retail brand and item up for grabs, the dining with exotic delights to tempt the pallet, the nightlife to leave a spark in your eye and a harvest of Mother Nature that could give a new lease of life to the beholder. Soaring skyscrapers and temples reside amicably beside each other, a mere relic of history and a blessing for the future. In a city that is full of contradictions, there is much to be appreciated and admired about its cheerful and inspiring nature.

In a country that has its origins in Buddhism; Hong Kong is proud to be the home of the world's largest seated bronze Buddhist statue. With the spectacular Lantau Island as its backdrop, the Giant Buddha or locally known as Tian Tan Buddha is 34 meters high. The stance of the statue, especially the lips, eyes and hands are all raised to deliver blessings on all who stand at the feet of it.

Children's Bed-Wetting May Be Caused by Constipation

Some children who wet their bed might be suffering from constipation, a new study finds.

Researchers examined 30 children and adolescents who were being treated for bed-wetting, and found some had rectums that were distended with stool, despite having normal bowel habits.

After treating the children with laxatives, 25 of the 30 participants did not wet their beds for the next three months.

"Kids are suffering for no reason," said lead author Dr. Steve Hodges, a pediatric urologist at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina.

"This study identifies how stool left in the rectum causes the rectum to expand and push against the bladder, making it hard to hold your urine," Hodges said.

The study was published Jan. 27 in the journal Urology.

How to know if your child is constipated

About 15 percent of kids in the U.S. wet the bed after age 3, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. More boys wet their beds thangirls.

Hodges said the link between bed-wetting and excess stool in the rectum was first reported in a 1986 study, but the finding didn't change the way doctors treated the condition.

"For years, constipation has been undiagnosed and therefore untreated," he said.

Hodges said thinks it may be due to the lack of understanding of what constipation means.

"The definition for constipation is confusing, and children and their parents often aren't aware the child is constipated," he said.

Monitoring a child's bowel movements isn't enough to identify a problem, Hodges said. He recommends parents should look at the size of the child's stool — stools that are hard, or wider than 2 centimeters, could be a sign of constipation, so parents should consider talking with their doctor, he said.

More than one factor related to bed-wetting

In the study, the researchers reviewed abdominal X-rays of the 30 children who had problems with bed-wetting, including 19 boys and 11 girls between ages 5 and 15. All X-rays showed excess stool in their rectums.

Kids were treated with a stool softener. For kids who still had enlarged rectums, enemas or laxatives were used. After treatment, researchers found 25 kids no longer wet their bed within three months.

"It's still not conventional wisdom that bowel health plays a role in bed-wetting," said Dr. Lane Robson, a pediatric urologist and director at The Children's Clinic in Canada, who was not involved with the research.

Still, "there is growing evidence that points to constipation, and that's a huge thing," he said. "More and more parents should know about this."

But Robson said that aggressively treating constipation isn't the only answer.

"Bed-wetting is also a combination of the kidneys making more urine than [the bladder] can hold, and a child having trouble waking up to go to the bathroom at night," Robson said.

He recommended making sure the child remains hydrated. "Restricting fluids in the evening is not good health," he said. In fact, restricting fluids at night actually perpetuates bed-wetting. 

He said that kids should be taught to wake up at night, by using a bed-wetting alarm, after improving the child's bowel health and hydration.

"There's no quick fix here," he said.

Dirty Minds Losing Inner Peace

When a person lives off a dirty mind, they rarely find inner peace. Dirty minds include selfishness, guilt, lack of hope and faith, greed, jealousy, and so on. Some people believe that sparking their sexuality with pornography brings inner peace. To the contrary, the guile will only cause harm and you may not see it now, but later you will, especially if you continue this behavior. What comes from pornography is greed, selfishness, debauchery, aides, STD, death, scandals, debauchery, hate, and so on.

Violence in the media and society is another dirty mind that robs people of their inner peace. Violence causes harm and fills the mind with guilt. Jeffery Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy and many other notorious killers are living proof that violence robs a person of total inner peace.

Selfishness is seen around the world and this too is a dirty mind that loses inner peace. When a person is selfish they are only violating one of the Ten Commandants, and that is to love the neighbors as self. Thus, being selfish leads to guilt, frustration, and other harms throughout a person's life. Learning to give does not mean you give everything you have to someone else. Rather, you give everything you have to the person you live with no motive in mind, and help those in need, if they are trying to help self.

Greed is a form of selfish that has led us to war, poverty, and other harmful actions throughout our lifetime. Thus, if you are harboring greed you are only robbing self of inner peace.

Money is the root of all evils, and what comes with money is scandal, debauchery, selfishness, greed, hate, mockery, and so on. While we all need money to survive deeming money as a god is not the answer or the way to finding inner peace.

Hate is the tool that destroys lives and involves, greed, selfishness, debauchery, mockery, scandal, guilt, and so on. What comes from the dirty mind is a link of dirty deals. Therefore, cleaning up the mind is the only way to finding true inner peace.

Lo ve is the true journey to inner peace. When you have love, you have joy, peace, hope, faith, respect, consideration, honesty, trust, loyalty, faithfulness, et cetera.

To make connections with you, you must pluck the rafters out of your mind and fill your mind with good things. When you start behaving and cultivating new habits, you will soon feel a wealth of relief. Each time you clutter the mind with guile you are adding weight to the mind and body. Thus, removing the trash will only bring you peace within.

The world is full of misery and you see it everywhere you go. When you visit the Chat Rooms online, you see people spilling out their life, or else searching for love when they do not have love to give. When you turn on the TV, you see the news where the world is in havoc. Thus, these people are lacking hope, love, and other elements that clear the mind of dirt and release the body and mind from prisons where they live throughout their life.

Are you ready to make the changes to find inner peace? IS your mind full of guile that prevents your from feeling your inner peace. Inner peace is a gift and a freedom of mind, thus reach for your freedom by clearing the mind of guile.

To get started take notes, review, self-talk out your problems and search for the answers within you to find inner peace. If you are lacking creativity, learn to use your creative parent within the brain that helps you find answers. If you are dwelling on the past, take some time to ask self why you want to allow something from your past to rob you of your inner peace and do something about immediately when the answer presents self.

Each day take some time out for you and so something good, rather than filling your mind with guile. Remember guile only leads to guilt, thus cleaning the mind leads to peace.

A Rested Mind Can Improve Your Productivity

Imagine that you're working late at night on a project due in the morning. Your body is tired and your mind is numb, but this project must get done, so you push on. You continue to work, despite the distinct feeling that the project would be much easier if you went to bed and approached it again in the morning. You feel obligated to do it now, so you stay up until the wee hours of the morning, producing less than desirable work in much more time than it would have taken with a rested mind. This was likely not the wisest move, since not only productivity was lost, but quality as well.

Having a rested mind really can make a difference in our daily productivity, whether it's work or housework we are trying to accomplish. Our minds were not meant to work for hours on end with no downtime. They need breaks and vacations. They need the ability to recharge from the daily overload of sensory and thought perceptions. Constantly running our minds on overtime without frequent periods of restoration can be detrimental to our work, our attitude, and even our physical health.

Luckily, there are a few simple steps you can take to prevent your mind from working on overload. Follow these helpful tips and ideas for increasing your daily productivity:

Get more sleep - Adequate sleep is crucial to allowing our subconscious minds to let go of all the stress of the day. During sleep our minds recharge themselves, generating the stamina and renewed perception needed for a fresh new day. If we fail to get adequate sleep, our minds will be sluggish and slow, essentially shutting down from the overload of stimuli. This creates conditions in which we cannot effectively think, speak, or act to our fullest potential.

Without the level of awareness and alertness that a rested mind provides, our pace slows down and productivity is lost. When our minds are overworked we often fall into "space cadet" mode, and we have trouble focusing on the tasks at hand. Thoughts frequently wander, and the ability to co! ncentrat e is lost. Most people know how much sleep they require to feel refreshed, but we rarely allow ourselves such a luxury. Try viewing adequate sleep as an investment into your overall well-being, and reap the rewards the next morning.

Reduce stress - Excessive stress can be very debilitating. It makes us feel overwhelmed and distracts us from getting our work done, and even worse - it promotes the formation of negative thoughts. Stress can hinder our productivity by making us more scattered and unfocused. We are unable to concentrate on one thing at a time because the cause of the stress is always in the back our minds, demanding attention.

Reducing the stressors in our lives will go a long way in allowing us to lead more productive and happy lives. Try to remember that some things are just not worth worrying about, and there is no sense in stressing over things we have no control over. Since much of our stress is the result of worrying about things beyond our control, allowing ourselves to let go of these thoughts can greatly reduce the stress in our lives.

Quiet the mind - Meditation is a great way to quiet our minds and develop clear thought processes. Try this exercise at least once a day: Find a quiet room with no interruptions, sit in a comfortable position, and close your eyes. Allow all thoughts to leave your mind, and try to focus on the silence within you. As thoughts begin to float through your mind, simply push them gently but firmly back out. This technique takes practice to perfect, but sticking with it will help you to develop intense focus that can be harnessed in other ways as well.

Meditating on a regular basis will ultimately improve our productivity because we will develop the ability to focus clearly on each task, and ultimately get more done in less time.

The Metaphysical Actor Part One - Have Actor's Lost Their Spiritual Ground?

Stanislavski, the great Russian theater genius, called what he did 'Spiritual Realism.' He wanted the actor to be carried away by the play, so that, regardless of his will he lives the part. Regardless of his will. What we are going for is entering the subconscious experience of 'living the part.' This opens the truth of our intuition in our moment to moment experience of 'being' the character. Stanislavski neglected to define his terms when speaking about states of consciousness with regards to the actor or with regards to artistry itself.

Before any further discussion, I must attempt to define my terms. Let us now clarify the unconscious, subconscious, and conscious modalities of consciousness in order to continue our discussion with regards to the art of the actor. Let us accept, for the time being, that the conscious modality is the most superficial and is the modality in which definition is expressed. The next modality is the one just underneath the conscious modality. It is the subconscious modality. The subconscious modality is the experiential modality. The third modality is the one which is the most deep. The unconscious modality is that of impressions. (The Human Potential Handbook, Leas Maria) Stanislavski believed that the subconscious was inaccessible to our consciousness. He believed that we could not enter that realm. I propose that we can and will make this shift a large overall theme in the creation of my work with the actor and the art of acting. I believe there to exist now here in the U.S. a more widespread and accessible arena of consciousness exploration and development, most likely more so than Stansilavski ever had the opportunity to experience. Although, Michael Chekov, Stanislavski's most gifted student, actively sought out consciousness exploration in his work with Eurythmy, Indian Yoga, meditation, and reincarnation. Our fortunate accessibility to the tools of human potential, healing, and energetics in art, music, and theater will come to play a more prominent i! nfluence in the birth of a new artist for the 21st century. The birth of a new actor.

Stanislavski also failed to define the terms intuition and inspiration in his opening chapters of An Actor Prepares. Websters dictionary defines intuition as: the ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning. A thing that one knows or considers likely from instinctive feeling rather than conscious reasoning. Websters defines inspiration as: the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, esp. to do something creative. The quality of having been so stimulated, esp. when evident in something. A person or thing that stimulates in this way. A sudden brilliant, creative, or timely idea.

For the purposes of my work I will substitute the terms 'truthful' for Stanislavski's 'inspired' and an actor's 'instinct' for Stanislavski's 'intuition.' Nowadays the modern American audience has become accustomed to the intensely private 'reality' created by films and film acting. We tend to judge and become inspired by the truth of the performance. The 'reality of their doings' as Meisner would say. This is not to say to other types of perfomance are not good or do not contain inherent truth or reality. It simply means that when watching a film performance we as an audience get swept away by the behavior, the emotion and the creation of the character under the given circumstances. This is what we see as truthful and is often what inspires other actors to strive for the same depth and truth in our performances. So, I will take intuition to mean an actor's instinct and inspiration as the truth of performance. Websters defines instinct as: an innate, typically fixed pattern of behavior in animals in response to certain stimuli. A natural or intuitive way of acting or thinking. A natural propensity or skill of a specified kind. The fact or quality of possessing innate behavior patterns. Websters defines truth as: the quality or state of being true. That which is true or in accordan! ce with fact or reality. A fact or belief that is accepted as true. This makes our following discussion a little more flexible because the fact remains that the art of acting and anything created on the stage or in front of the camera is not 'reality' but a reflection of the fictional reality of the story, the environment, the characters, etc.

An inspired (truthful) performance is born out of an actor's instinct (intuition). In other words a truthful performance is the result of a string of intuitive moments. I believe that the root of an actor's intuition operates in the subconscious body modality of consciousness. The subconscious body as being the experience (subconscious) of sensations (the language of the body). In other words, an actors instinct operates in a moment to moment inspired truth, as long as the actor allows his or her instinct (intuition) to follow the deep sensate experience of the body. Allow the experience of sensations in the body (the subconscious body) to communicate the instinctive needs of the embodied character.

Our demands a this point must be in training to open up into our subconscious bodies. How do we train entering the subconscious? Once we are there how do we train prolonging those intervals? And by prolonging these intervals can we bring a more consistent truth or inspiration to our performances and to our art? And when we are in the midst of creating out of our subconscious instinctual bodies, can we then learn to shift in and out between the subconscious experience and our conscious mental directionality of that sensate experience? In other words, can we allow the inspired, instinctual creation to unfold moment by moment (rooted in the subconscious), while at the same time allowing that to be guided within the framework of our consciously defined characters and stories which we discovered by using all of our known tools in the creative process of acting (objectives, obstacles, actions, conflicts, beats, behavior, etc.), without our conscious minds sabotaging or al! lowing t he actor to 'come out' of his subconscious and instinctual experience? Beyond this can we learn to attune to a 'universal mind'? The Mind that runs the Universe. The Mind of non-judgment. The Mind of the healer. I believe it is a frequency of vibration that can begin to be cultivated the more one practices receiving. Much the same way a tree receives sun from above and water from below. And in this universal frequency can the actor allow that intelligence to flow in and through him - providing him or her a much more profound experience within a Universal framework? If so, the theoretical result may give the actor the ability to truly 'live the part regardless of his will.' And what may be crafted is a total unification between the 'spirit' of the actor with the 'spirit' of the character guided by the 'spirit' of the Universe - the great and creative Universal Mind. All of which may give us a way towards achieving what Stanislavski believed to be the aim of our art form - "the creation of an inner life of a human spirit, and its expression in an artistic form." The Law of Attraction and Meditation

It is very important to guide your thoughts and focus your mind towards your wants and desires while applying the law of attraction. This can be very difficult without sufficient practice. Usually negative thoughts about fear and worry continually ensure that your focus is disturbed. Such distractions can be avoided through meditation. Meditation will help you to quiet your mind of unwanted thoughts and day to day chaos. Meditation will additionally help you in increasing in combining the pulling power of your thoughts with the law of attraction.

It is very important to follow the below mentioned rules while meditating:

1.Find a spot that is devoid of all forms of distraction like phones, TV, pets, etc2.Tell yourself that you are free from all responsibilities for 15 minutes. Allow yourself to freeze the outside world and gather your inner self and your deeper thoughts.3.Take few deeper and slower breaths so that your body, mind and soul relaxes4.In this state of inner peace feel grateful for all the things that you have. The peace, love and positive emotions that the feeling of gratitude brings in you are the perfect setting for manifesting all that you want.5. Once you reach this state of ultimate relaxation, start to imagine about the things that you want in life. Do not start with dreaming big but build on your wants step by step.

It is of utmost importance for your thoughts to match up with your feelings as this will help push the law of attraction to the next level. If you do not experience how it feels to have the things that you long for such as dream job, relationship, house, spouse, etc then you will not be able to attract these into your life. Building on these thoughts step-by-step will ensure that you are slowly but steadily building your feelings towards the vibration of the things that you desire.

It is always easier to make your mind think about smaller happiness and match your feelings to such happiness and then to move to the next level of happiness. On t! he other hand, if you make your mind quantum leap to big aspirations and thoughts your feelings might not, and most likely will not match your thoughts.

This exercise produces much better results when you make the habit of practicing this either while going to bed or the first thing after waking up. This helps your mind to stay focused when you are the most relaxed and will make it easier for you to 'let go' and allow the law of attraction to weave its magic.

Hold Your Glass! Benefits of 1,000 Bottles of Red Wine Could Come from Drug

Lovers of red wine rejoiced when it was found to contain resveratrol — a compound purported to increase health and maybe even lengthen life. But studies have suggested that to see benefits, you would need to consume large amounts of the compound — more than is found in a bottle of wine.

Now a new study suggests we could get the equivalent of large resveratrol doses from pills we already have— a class of drugs that are being tested for use as treatments for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

The findings suggest these drugs, known as known as phosphodiesterase type 4 (PDE4) inhibitors, may provide a practical way to reap red wine's benefits than consuming buckets of the stuff (which would certainly carry health risks).

"[The study] reveals a novel utility for this class of drugs that hasn't been explored before," said study researcher Dr. Jay H. Chung, chief of the Laboratory of Obesity and Aging Research at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

However, the study was conducted in mice, and the results will need to be replicated in people.

Why red wine is healthy

In the study, scientists aimed to figure out exactly how resveratrol, a compound in red wine, acts inside cells. They discovered resveratrol works in a different manner than previously thought.

The study showed that resveratrol inhibits a protein known as phosphodiesterase type 4 (PDE4).That meant that resveratrol is a PDE4 inhibitor.

Knowing that drugs called PDE4 inhibitors werebeing tested to treat Alzheimer's, the researchers gave one such drug, called rolipram, to mice.

They found the drug produced all the health benefits of resveratrol, including preventing diet-induced obesity and improving control over blood sugar levels.

In studies on people, resveratrol has been shown to have anti-diabetes effects. But people would need to consume about 1,000 bottles of red wine a day in order to take in enough resveratrol to see true health benefits, Chung said.

PDE4 inhibitors could provide a realistic way for people to get the same benefits, the researchers said. In addition, PDE4 inhibitors may be less toxic than resveratrol itself, because the compound interacts with many proteins inside cells.

"By just targeting the key player [PDE4] you minimize the potential for adverse effects," Chung said.

Chung said he is planning to conduct a follow-up study that examines the effects of rolipram on obese people with insulin resistant.

Another PDE4 inhibitor, called roflumilast, is already approved as a treatment for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The side effects of this drug include diarrhea, nausea and dizziness, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Treating diseases

"I think this is a huge step forward in the understanding of what resveratrolcan do at the biological level," said Philippe Marambaud, an Alzheimer's researcher at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in Manhasset, N.Y., who has researched resveratrol and was not involved in the new study.

By finding out how resveratrol works, the study helps researchers who are investigating whether the compound can have therapeutic effects for other diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Marambaud said.

However, future studies will need to replicate the findings to be sure that resveratrol does indeed inhibit PDE4, Marambaud said.

In addition, although the study suggests PDE4 inhibitors can mimic resveratrol,. researchers should continue investigating the effects of resveratrol, as well as those of PDE4 inhibitors. "You don't want to think that one approach will work better than another," Marambaud said.

The new study will be published Feb. 3 in the journal Cell.
