How Stress Relates to Acne

You might not have known it, but stress of any kind can actually aggravate or even cause your acne. A university study in Germany has actually proven this theory to be correct. All types of stress can cause the problems above. Stress can be defined as either physical or mental tension that can result from chemical, emotional or physical causes. Those things such as anxiety, fear, anger and worry are all the different types of stresses and they should be avoided if possible or reduced.

There are lots of excellent ways to reduce your levels of stress. By far the most effective and easiest way is to simply do some exercise. When exercising, your body will release chemicals known as endorphins. These chemicals are a natural pain-killer and make you feel really good and so are wonderful to combat stress levels.

Laughter has also been shown to release these endorphin chemicals into the body. Some studies sh! owed tha t the body actually released 4 hormones that were all related to stress relief.

Your diet is probably the most important aspect of psychological and emotional well-being which is critical for stress reduction. When you are depressed or just out-of-sorts, your stress levels will rise. On the other hand, when you're happy, you are much less likely to get bothered by small things or get "stressed out".

Vitamins are handy when you are stressed. Vitamin B especially, is essential for your mental health and if you become deficient in B-group vitamins you may suffer from depression, constant tiredness and have a lack of concentration which are all perfect conditions for elevating stress levels.

Other great stress relievers are yoga, incense and aromatherapy, massage, meditation, and mineral salt baths. You should try to find an activity that helps you to feel relaxed each day to remove the stress that you have accumulated for that particular day.

Disillusioned with meditation

Is it possible to become disillusioned with formal zazen?  Yes, of course.  Many who practice formal zazen at a Zen or Dharma center can become more or less disillusioned.  For a time zazen can have a placebo like effect on the practitioner.  Eventually, the placebo effect wears off.  The practitioner finds that they are almost back to square one.  At some point, even a crisis of faith may arise; a serious rupture that may cause us to question Buddhism, itself. 

Okay, let's stop here.  No serious practitioner should ever assume that sitting on one's butt in a Zen or Dharma center is the path to enlightenment.  Doing marathon zazen will not work either.

So why do we believe that doing zazen is the path to enlightenment?  Is it because our Zen master said it was?  But how do we know that his teaching is the same as the Buddha's?  Because he said so?

As meditation, the problem with zazen is far too much emphasis is placed on just sitting as if the posture, itself, were somehow capable of bringing us to the state of awakening.  To be blunt, it is a false teaching that takes for granted posture to be the moving principle of meditation (dhyâna).

After the Buddha-to-be subdued Mara, the demon of the Five Aggregates, and triumphed in battle sitting in front of the Bodhi-tree, he entered into four levels of meditation, that is, dhyâna.  Needless to say, these levels are very subtle—we should not imagine we can accomplish these levels in a month or even in five or ten years!  

What dhyâna is really about is our mind trying to comprehend its very own substance; passing beyond its phenomenalizations which are bewitching.  Skipping over the three levels, when the Buddha-to-be reached the fourth level of dhyâna his "mind was completely pure, perfect, luminous, free from emotionality, free from all the fettering passions, supple, perfectly balanced and unwavering" (Lalitavistara Sutra).

Such a Mind the Buddha-to-be discovered is no ordinary mind.  It is not our mind that is like a monkey swinging from one branch to another.  By this transcendent Mind the Buddha-to-be became the Buddha who attained "the true end, entering reality, understanding well the sphere of the Dharma" (Lalitavistara Sutra).

We should never forget that Zen is about the fundamentally awakened True Mind or the same, Buddha-nature—not about sitting.  Perhaps disillusionment is a red flag warning us that our Zen practice is not in accord with the Buddha's true teachings (saddharma).

In my last article in March 2009, "Stressful Times", I shared with you how stress can lead to a number of negative health and emotional problems, such as relationship issues, needless arguments, weight gain, high-blood pressure, sleep disorders, panic attacks, rapid heart beat and more. Well, it looks like I hit the nail right on the proverbial head with that one.

In the last week alone, I have seen several articles addressing the same subject. In one of them, Pam Belluck of the New York Times shared some interesting insights and statistics from experts.

1) Anxiety, depression and stress are troubling people everywhere, as they worry or react to pervasive uncertainty,

2) Therapists and psychiatrists are seeing more and more first time patients,

3) In an American Psychological Association poll from September, 80 percent of those surveyed said the economy is causing significant stress, up from 60 percent six months earlier,

4) The National Sleep Foundation reports that 27 percent of people surveyed have experienced sleeplessness as a result of stress, and

5) The National Suicide Prevention hotline reports that calls have increased by over 27 percent from January 2008 to January 2009!

In good times, even when it seems that nothing can or will go wrong in your daily life, you and everyone else experiences stress in some way or another. But not everyone chooses to let it affect him or her in the same way - especially in the tough times as we see now. Unfortunately, many people, both children and adults, are reaching for anxiety medication, alcohol, food or take out their frustration in anger directed at someone close at hand.

Here are some additional tips on how to handle and manage your stress level.

First, be sure to eat "intelligently". Be smart and eat a balanced diet of fruits and vegetables, true whole grains, low fat dairy, lean meats or fish and healthy unsaturated fats - stick to those! that ha ve been processed as little as possible. Eating a pure, healthy diet will give you the nutrients and energy you need to manage stress. Limit processed foods of all kinds, even those, commercially produced or those from the "fad diet plan of the month" that proclaim to be healthy. Many of those processed "fad diet plan" foods you see in commercials and the internet have just as many sugars, sugar alcohols, chemicals and ingredients in them as a "Pop Tart" pastry.

Next, be patient and slow down. Too many people try to cram in way too much for their days, leaving them overwhelmed. Prioritize your "to do" list and don't feel bad if you have to cut something out in order to slow down. Use your energy wisely and be productive, don't waste energy on unnecessary things.

Third, take time to relax daily. Relaxation should be part of your every day routine. And, give yourself the permission to do something that relaxes you. When you find yourself in a stressful situation, concentrate on your breathing by taking deep breaths and notice how much more relaxed you feel. As you become more calm and relaxed, your heart rate will slow. Qigong for Concentration is an excellent way to learn breathing and meditation exercises that can bring you to a calmer state of mind. The gentle, graceful movements of Qigong and meditation, combined with controlled breathing exercises make it an ideal program to improve men's health, women's health and children of all ages - they are even great exercises for senior citizens.

Fourth, do some physical exercise every day. Exercise does wonders for stress reduction. There are many ways in explaining the word 'stress'. But, we will mainly focus on 'stress' in this article and how it comes from emotional and physical tension. Maybe this may sound crazy to you, but did you know that doctors state not having stress can be dangerous too.

The real question to ask is whether or not one can truly be creative in a hectic, stress-filled world? What are the causes of stress? Stress is created from both emotional and physical responses to tension. There are certain hormones that are released by the brain when one is experiencing stress and these hormones bring about changes to the body. Among the most common of these changes is an increase in blood pressure.

A relationship break-up, or not being able to meet your bosses requirements ect. can be some of the causes of stress. The world we live in is very fast. There is every man for himself in a lot of different type of people. It is very hard to remain calm and peaceful even in very stressful situations. However,even with all of this, there are ways which you can make sure that stress does not make your entire life feel like it's horrible. How?

Most people will agree the best approach to dealing with stress is to focus on what brings you joy and makes you happy. Sometimes as we get older we are so busy in our lives that we don't do the things that make us happy anymore. Maybe we need to think more like a small child, running and playing, and doing what makes them happy.

Someone remarked, and correctly at that, that to 'keep others happy, you must be happy yourself'. If you find yourself in a situation that stresses you, you should withdraw from the situation, do something relaxing like taking a shower. Follow that with some of your favorite music, following this pattern will bring quick 'stress relief'. Another great way of dealing with stress is to get regular exercise.

Yoga provides tremendous "stress relief." Discussing your troubles with your loved ones also helps with stress reduction.! The phy sical symptoms of anxiety and stress are often manifested by belligerence and headaches. There are also weekend discussion groups focused on stress and tension management. Moderate amounts of red wine can provide quick "stress relief."

How to Gain Mind Control Over Your Body

What your body can do depends on what your mind can conceive. It's all like a camera. Whatever the lens captures, the film prints. Don't expect a photo of something that was not captured by the lens.

The body can only come up with a potential that the mind can imagine. The mind is designed as a command center, and the body serves as production department. When the mind is strong, the body will obey. When the mind is creative, the body will create accordingly.

When the reverse happens, inability sets in. When the mind is weak and overwhelmed, the body takes over and commands the mind. Thus, at the slightest hint of difficulty and pain, the body will give up and tell the mind it can do no more.

The mind can do nothing except agree with the spoiled body, and quit. When the body doesn't feel like doing anything--like, when you feel lazy and any excuse will do for not getting out of bed--and the mind is too weak to oppose that, you have a case of a body being atop the head. And from that abnormal scenario will flow an equally abnormal life. All issues in life will spread from that, and you will have a total wreck in your hands.

The head ought to be always on top of the body, and this means the body ought to obey the mind always. Many may ask, "What if the mind is also a wreck and commands the body to stay dormant?" This scenario is often mistaken as a lazy mind commanding the body into idleness.

Many experts say a healthy mind actually always opts for a positive course of action, never inaction. When the mind seems to work otherwise, it is proof of a subverted mind controlled by a spoiled, pampered body. It thinks negatively and unproductively precisely because the body has taught and controlled it to be thus.

The mind can be strengthened by training it to make decisions the body will obey. If you adopt a life principle, make sure everything you do is based on it. The mind decides what is right and the body is given practical things to do in relation to it.

Once t he mind decides something the body is unwilling to do, a tug-of-war starts. It is in such conflict that the body must be disciplined to succumb to the mind. If this is accomplished, the mind is strengthened and given authority over the body, which is trained to respond positively to such authority. The person becomes "highly principled." As this goes on, the mind is promoted to heights never before imagined, and dares (and is encouraged) to go beyond limits, tugging the body along the way. The body does what it is told to do. So the body begins to outdo itself as the mind imagines it to be doing so. When the head is put in its rightful place of authority over the body, limitless potentials break out of their hiding and release the ace champion in a person.

When I notice I am stressed out, the stress does not evaporate magically with a snap of my fingers. I wish it were that easy. Stress training is something we need in life. However, thanks to my consistent meditation practice, my relationship with stress has changed.Often I can get off the downward stress spiral without losing a whole day to the effects of stress. These actions are becoming better over time, and I am by no means perfect at instant stress reduction.But here is what has worked for me in the past.

<h2>Reduce stress with the following practical ideas</h2>

Taking a walk. I know this is not an earth-shattering top-secret tip.Perhaps everyone just needs a reminder.Physically leaving the premises from a stressful situation, such as walking my dog, always lowers my stress level. Listening to meditation music.This one has never let me down. I put on my headphones and listen to some binaural meditation music to almost force my brain to cooperate with my de-stressing intentions. Practice a breathing exercise such as pranayama. Specialized breathing exercises really do work. Stress causes people to start holding their breath, which then leads to a host of other negative physical situations at a time when your body needs oxygen more than ever while stressed. Doing a focused breathing exercise triggers your body to start relaxing, and with your focus on your breathing it is away from the situation that caused the stress to begin with. One other thing that helps with stress for me is "real-time self observation".This is something that happens for me thanks to my consistent meditation practice.It doesn't occur every time but its great when it does occur. In a stressful situation I can step outside of my brain, so that I am literally observing myself have a mini-tantrum or argument, and then fortunately step back into my brain and calm the hell down.This sounds odd to tell you about but its what occurs. Perhaps this is what is meant by esoteric Buddhist meditation texts that talk a! bout "th e observer becomes the observed"? I don't know, but causing life situations to get the best of me is motivating enough for me to become present and get a grip. Surprisingly, busting up stress can be as easy as focusing on your breathing or taking a stroll. Don't let these tools simplicities make you think they lack power. Is your child showing signs of stress?

Does your child suffer from fears, nervousness or generalized anxiety? Today, more and more children are exhibiting considerable signs of stress, particularly with respect to education. For many children, this higher level of stress seems to be directly interfering with their ability to learn. In addition, children predisposed to conditions like ADD or ADHD are especially susceptible to the effects of stress. These children are twice as likely to abuse alcohol and drugs and four times likely to get in trouble with law enforcement.

Of even greater concern is that these higher levels of stress seem to be occurring at earlier and earlier ages. Many children as young as 5 or 6 years old are exhibiting the effects of higher levels of stress. Under the "No Child Left Behind Act" and the mistaken belief that learning earlier is better, more children are being forced to accept greater academic responsibilities, even as early as 3 and 4 years old.

Many members of the American Pediatrics Association have subsequently spoken out against the "No Child Left Behind Act" because of the physical and emotional toll it seems to be taking on many or our children.

So what is the impact of all this stress on our children and on the learning process? The fact is, people think differently when under stress. When our Fight or flight response is triggered, our heart rate and breathing increase and digestion slows. Our adrenal glands release epinephrine. Our pupils dilate to let in more light and blood flow to our muscles increases by as much as 1200%. We become more alert to our environment. Our sympathetic nervous system is activated and our brain goes into a very reactive "problem-solving mode".

When a child (or adult) is in this reactive problem-solving mode, his ability to store, process and recall information can be considerably reduced. His ability to respond thoughtfully with reason and logic may also be impaired. He may have difficulty focusing or paying attention in class. While this aler! t, react ive mode may be appropriate to activities such as snow-boarding, skate-boarding or playing video games, studies show it does not serve a child well in the classroom.

Sometimes the child or adult develops a negative attitude towards school and learning. This can occur when a child perceives that school and learning are becoming more and more difficult. He knows he's intelligent and can't understand why the skills he has relied upon for so long are no longer effective. As his struggles with learning increase, his frustration grows. So what can we do to help our children overcome stress?The first thing we can do to help our children learn effectively is to teach them to recognize stress and understand its effect on learning. This can usually be accomplished by helping them find contrasting experiences in their own lives: 1) a specific event when they were stressed or anxious and learning or recalling information was difficult and tedious; and 2) a specific event when they were relaxed and focused and learning was easy and fun.

Next, they need the tools to reduce their level of stress when needed. They need to learn how to switch from the fight-or-flight, "problem-solving mode" to the relaxed and focused "learning mode'. This can often be accomplished by practicing a simple breathing and focusing exercise. They begin! by comp letely focusing their eyes on one spot. While visually focusing on the spot, they become aware of their breathing. As they slowly breathe in and out, they continue to focus on the spot for one minute. Many children can effect a significant improvement in learning by practicing this simple exercise.

At centers like the Neuro-Linguistic Learning Center in El Dorado Hills, children and adults are taught to use a variety of tools to help them reduce stress and increase their focus. Once stress is reduced or overcome, they can now utilize appropriate strategies for storing, processing and recalling information.

These leaning strategies allow children and adults to take information from a variety of sources (auditory, visual or written) and to process that information in a way that is appropriate to their individual learning style. The net effect is that study time can actually be reduced while retention and recall are effectively increased. Typically, this training takes place over several weeks so that the child can absorb and apply his new skills. One side effect of this type of training is that as the child's abilities grow, his confidence returns and self-esteem increases.
