Mindfulness Exercises to Try

Mindfulness Exercises to Try

Posted: 22 Feb 2012 01:00 PM PST

Article by Saddhamala (Nancy Nicolazzo)

There are many lists of mindfulness exercises to try. Often, when we have a list, we do what is on the list and tick each thing off when it is done. Another approach to exercising our mindfulness muscles is to do one exercise for awhile (a week or longer) until it becomes natural to be mindful in that situation.

Here is an example of this approach. Perhaps you have tea regularly during the day. You could decide to drink each cup of tea mindfully. When you drink your tea, you would not do anything else but drink the tea. So you would not read a newspaper, or listen to the news on the radio, or watch television, or have a conversation or read a book while you were drinking tea. You would, however, notice the temperature of the tea, the flavor, how the tea feels in your mouth and throat. You would notice the steam from the tea, the temperature of the mug or tea cup. You would be mindfully drinking tea. And when you start to think about what you are going to do after you drink the tea, you would bring your attention back to the tea.

Another example of practicing mindfulness with one exercise is to drive mindfully. Each time you got in your car to drive to school, work, the grocery store, the soccer field or a friend's house, you would just drive. You would pay attention to how your hands feel on the steering wheel, how your body feels in the driver's seat, how tight the seat belt is and where it is on your body. You would notice the temperature in the car and adjust it so that it is comfortable. You would not listen to the radio or eat anything while you are driving. And when you start to think about how the person driving in front of you is driving too slowly, or get angry because someone cut in front of you, you would continually bring your attention to driving. Mindful driving is much less stressful than driving in a rush or getting upset over the way other people drive.

Another mindfulness exercise you should try is mindful talking. Very often we say the first thing that comes t! o mind d uring a conversation. Speaking mindfully means really listening to the person who is talking to you and then responding thoughtfully, kindly and straightforwardly.

So there you have it, several mindfulness exercises you might like to try - and before you know it, you will be more mindful in other ways as well.

The Benefits of Mindfulness

Mindfulness
by RubyJi

Article by Saddhamala (Nancy Nicolazzo)

Mindfulness means paying deliberate attention to experiences without judgment. When we are aware of our physical sensations, our feelings, our minds, our thoughts and our emotions we are showing up for life rather than moving through life on "automatic pilot".

Have you ever noticed that days go by and you barely notice what you have done? We wake up, follow our morning routines, go to work, run errands, do the laundry, take care of the kids, cook, eat and go to sleep and because we are so used to all these actions, we can miss the nuances that come with them.

Mindfulness can change this. With mindfulness, giving undivided attention to what we do, we can focus on:

-what we do and how we do it as a way to help ourselves and other people-what we feel and how to make those feelings positive-what we say and how to use speech in a kind and truthful way-what we think and how the mind works and how to focus the mind on one thing at a time.

Rather than being swept away by thoughts and feelings, we can teach ourselves to calmly attend to all of our daily activities, with clarity and with kindness towards ourselves and towards others. When I think about the benefits of mindfulness, I realize that mindfulness can make the world a better place.

Mindfulness:

-calms the body-opens the heart-awakens the spirit-reduces stress-eases worry-promotes ease-fosters stability-develops wisdom-reveals the essence of situations-helps us to slow down and attend to each moment

Mindfulness opens us up to:

-giving and receiving love-thinking about things in an expansive way-being compassionate-being quiet-listening-speaking from the heart-being present to another point of view

There are also psychological and medical benefits when we practice mindfulness. Studies have proven that mindfulness boosts the immune system, improves memory, lowers blood pressure, and gives an overall feeling of well-being. Mindfulness is part of the mind/body connection and may reduce the need for! medicat ion - and it has no harmful side-effects.

Being mindful allows the "'ordinary to reveal itself as extraordinary". When we rush through our daily activities - our meetings, conversations, meals, time spent with people we care about, and mindlessly attend to our usual schedule, we miss out on what is extraordinary in what we think of as ordinary.

4 Tips for Sneaking 'Health' into Your Kids' Food

nutrition tips, deborah enos, certified nutritionist,

When my kids were younger, they went through stages. There were times when they actually seemed to enjoy salads and other healthy foods, but then there were times when they only wanted chicken nuggets and French fries. On the busiest days, I was very tempted to avoid the battle and just give them what they wanted. At times, I even conceded, but I knew it was wrong.

Even back then, I knew how important it was for them to eat nutrient-rich meals; I knew they needed nutrients to develop into the smart and healthy young women I wanted them to become. So, we had some battles. 'It wasn't easy, but I did pick up a few tips along the way.

Here are my best tips for getting your kids to eat more nutritious meals:

  1. Always serve breakfast. According to 1990 research published in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, school-age children who eat breakfast are more likely to perform better on tests than children who skip breakfast. Here's a trick: Buy the healthy cereal, but mix a little non-sweetened cocoa powder into the milk. It doesn't add any sugar, and it's a good source of iron. And there you have it: healthy cereal and chocolate milk. Your kids will love it.
  2. Sneak veggies into fun foods. Quesadillas are one of my favorite snacks for the kids because you can easily sneak small pieces of broccoli or cauliflower (or both) into the mix. You can do the same with mac and cheese.
  3. Swap out empty-calorie snacks for more nutritious ones. Instead of a regular chip cookies, make yours with oatmeal. Oatmeal raisin cookies are a stretch for some kids, so meet them halfway and use semisweet chocolate chips instead of raisins. Sweet potato chips are also a great swap for regular potato chips.
  4. Make more food at home. I know it can be hard to find the time, but it can be done. You can make simple snacks to have on hand for the kids in almost no time. Try mixing yogurt with small slices of fresh fruit and freezing it in popsicle molds. The preparation won't take more than five minutes, and you'll have a healthy and nutritious snack ready to go.

Students Suffer from Stress and Anxiety

Posted: 22 Feb 2012 10:00 AM PST

Article by Anthony D'Agostino

High school and college students suffer from and are faced with significant amounts of stress and anxiety that can result in both physical and emotional health issues.

A recent study shows that five times as many high school and college students suffer and are dealing with stress, anxiety and other mental health issues as their counterparts that were studied during the Great Depression. This research study is based on the responses of 77,576 high school and college students who from 1938 through 2007, took the Minnessota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI).

* Students themselves point to everything from pressure to succeed - self-imposed and otherwise - to a fast-paced world that's only sped up by the technology they love so much. * Another major contributor appears to be the unrealistic feelings ingrained in young people, that they need to have huge amounts of money to be considered a success. This leads to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety and depression. * In addition, today's youth is brought up in a "you can do anything" environment. This leads to false expectations which when not met results in anxiety and depression.

Are you a student or parent of a student that suffers with stress and anxiety? Here are some ways for students to maintain good health and keep their sanity.

* Establish a quiet space to study. This is a place were you can focus and concentrate away from distractions. If you live with a noisy roommate, find a quiet spot in the library or your favorite coffee shop. * Create a schedule. Leave yourself plenty of time to study for exams and get work done. * Don't pull "All Nighters". Make sure to leave yourself enough study time. * Stay away from caffeine, alcohol and drugs. Caffeine only provides a temporary jolt. You will eventually crash from excessive use. Need I say anything about excessive alcohol use other than moderation my young friends, moderation. And please just forget about drugs altogether. * Get on a healthy diet. * Get plenty of sleep. ! * Don't obsess on results. Test scores are important but you need to keep things in perspective. Otherwise you will become overly anxious about a test's outcome which can actually cause you to do poorly. You need to shift your focus and stay present minded. Try some positive affirmations and visualization techniques to change your perspective, and remember that Yoga and Meditation techniques are time tested and proven stress relievers. Click here for details! * Know your learning style. Not everyone learns in the same way. It's important to know if you're a visual, auditory or kinesthetic type learner. * Practice visualization techniques. Imagine yourself having already achieved your desired results. * Develop optimism. People that are optimistic are healthier, less stressed, and more successful. * Use stress management techniques. The Yoga Awakening Meditation Collection is comprised of over 24 stress reduction techniques and exercises that will help. Emei Mountain

Posted: 22 Feb 2012 08:00 AM PST

Article by sinnyliaoyan

Located in the southwest of Emei County, Sichuan Province, the Emei Mountain is one of the Four Buddhist Shrines in China and its history has been recorded for over 2,000 years, during which time a rich Buddhist cultural heritage has accumulated. The mountain is known for its stiff cliffs, highrising peaks, roating waterfalls, gurgling springs, towering ancient trees and fragrant flowers. It has been described as "a beauty spot under heaven" by Chinese men of lettered since ancient times. The highest peak of the mountain is 3,099 meters above sea level. Atop the Golden Summit one can enjoy the sunrise, seas of clouds, the Buddha's halo and the sunset glow. The total rugged road to its summit is 75 kilometers long.

Although Emeishan is still hugely popular with pilgrims, (the smoke from incense and burning paper in the temples en route stings your eyes!) the mountain is equally famous for its spectacular scenery. Emei Mountain is a well-known natural museum with more than 3,000 specimens of plants and 2,000 types of animals including groups of monkeys that appear on the mountain roads and fascinate the tourists. The word "Emei" in Chinese means "Eyebrows of beauty" and locals believe that the peaks of Emei resemble the eyebrows of a woman!

The E'mei Mountain rises above the ground, towering, graceful, ancient and supernatural. It is well known in the world for its graceful natural landscapes, ancient Buddhist culture, abundant animal and plant resources and unique geology and landform. E'mei Mountain has enjoyed a good reputation as the "most graceful mountain" since antiquity. There are ancient woods reaching the sky, flowing spring and flying waterfall with uniquely graceful sceneries. With the change of season and different mountain topography, the sceneries turn to be fantastically exotic and graceful. It is not only a famous tourist resort and a famous Buddhist mountain, but also a national-level towering mountain type scenic spot and historic site in China that blends natural l! andscape s and Buddhist culture into one. It is called "Fairy Mountain and Buddhist Kingdom", "Botanical Kingdom", "Paradise of Animals" and "Geological Museum". It enjoys a good reputation as "the Most Graceful Mountain under Heaven".

There are plenty of historical sites, and a lot of precious cultural relics on the mountain. Inside Baoguo Temples, a large china statue of Buddha with a height of 2.4 meters made in the Ming Dynasty looks alive. A big bell, also made in the Ming Dynasty with a weight of 12.5 tons, has more than 60,000 characters on it. The sound produced by the bell is deep, and its echo spreads as far as 15 kilometers. The Leshan Giant Buddha scenic area, which covers 2.5 square kilometers, is famous for its Giant Buddha statue, said to be the biggest Buddha statue in the world. The way in which the cultural features have been integrated with the natural scenery is considered to be a precious legacy. The Giant Buddha statue, carved on the mountain, stands 71 m high, with its back against Jiuding Mountain and facing the confluence of the Minjiang, Dadu and Qingyi River, and there are more than 90 stone carvings and Buddhist shrines on both sides of the Giant Buddha.

The Golden Summit The Golden Summit of the E'mei Mountain has an altitude of 3077 meters. Overlooked from such a high place, the sight of sunset covering vast areas is more magnificent. The sky before dawn is fantastic. It gradually gives out a gleam of light on the horizon with red clouds rising up continuously and holding two or three colored clouds with golden edges. A resplendent day is about to befall. Under the colored clouds and above the clear and indigo velarium, in a split second, there is a spot of mauve slowly rising up and gradually changing into a small arc and semi-round and into orange and golden red. And then at a slight bounce, a round red sun is embedded on the horizon with a transient tail light in tow. With the sun rising from the east, rosy clouds of dawn are all over the sky and ten thousand beams of! golden light shoot toward the land. The E'mei Mountain seems as if gradually taking on a golden cloak from the head down to the feet and presenting its entire graceful body.

Cloud SeaIn case of clear sky, white clouds gradually rise up. In a moment, the boundless cloud sea is like a snow white fleece blanket, clean, thick and smooth, and spread over the horizon. When mountain wind blows suddenly, the cloud sea drifts away and the peaks and ranges become a group of small islands in the cloud sea. When the cloud sea gathers together, tens of thousands of mountains and gullies are hidden without a trace. The cloud sea sometimes opens and sometimes closes like "green snake dancing among the mountains" with majestic appearance. The most grand is the innumerable cloud posts in the shape of mushrooms rising from the cloud sea now and then. They soar up into the air and then slowly fall down.

Buddhist LightWhen you stand on the Golden Summit turning your back at the sun, the sunlight comes from behind. When there is also permeating mist in the under front direction, you will see a colored aureole with the colors arranged in the order of red outside and purple inside over the under front mist curtain. In the center there appears a figure, which moves with people. This is just the Buddhist light. Even if there are hundreds of tourists watching it at the same time, the tourists can only see their own figures shrouded by the aureole, which is rather supernatural. Therefore, the Buddhist light is also called the "precious light of the E'mei Mountain". As a matter of fact, the Buddhist light is a natural phenomenon of light. It is formed by diffraction when the sunlight shines on the surface of the clouds and mists. The Buddhist light occurs more than 70 times on average every year and more often around two to four o'clock in the afternoon.

Tips:During the period from December to March, whenever there is clear sky with calm wind, after two or three oclock in the afternoon, bending over and looking downward ! from the Sheshen Rock of the Golden Summit, sometimes you will find a five-colored corona floating above the clouds and your figure placed in the corona, which follows the body and never miss it. No matter how many people there are, you can only see your own figure.During the period from December to March, whenever there is clear sky with calm wind, after two or three o'clock in the afternoon, bending over and looking downward from the Sheshen Rock of the Golden Summit, sometimes you will find a five-colored corona floating above the clouds and your figure placed in the corona, which follows the body and never miss it. No matter how many people there are, you can only see your own figure.Pilgrins come to visit the hundered or so shrines, temples and other holy spots along the mountain. Admission, like the stairs that bring you to the top, is steep; 120 for a pass, and an additional 10-20 to get into the various holy sites. As for accommodation, most traverlers will sleep in one of the many monasteries along the way. Be forewarned- the climb is arduous, and the weather can be chilly.

"We can smile, breathe, walk, and eat our meals in a way that allows us to be in touch with the abundance of happiness that is available. We are very good at preparing to live, but not very good at living. We know how to sacrifice ten years for a diploma and we are willing to work very hard to get a job, a car, a house, and so on. But we have difficulty remembering that we are alive in the present moment, the only moment there is for us to be alive."

MYANMAR

Myanmar, commonly known as Burma, is an Ancient Meditation land entering the modern world after a thousand years of isolation. It allows travelers the rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of history in the modern world, before it slips away. Located in Southeast Asia, Myanmar was a kingdom ruled by a succession of indigenous leaders until it fell under British rule in the late 19th century. This period of colonization led to increased Indian and Chinese influence, introducing new facets of culture to the Burmese people. After World War II, the nation gained its independence and has remained under the rule of a military government. Damon travels through this devoutly Meditation country, visiting stunning pagoda temples, humble monasteries and chillingly accurate fortune tellers. He experiences everything from old fashioned villages with ancient customs, to modern river cruises with the finest luxuries. Along the way he talks to monks, nuns, government officials and school children to discover how Myanmar's people feel about religion, faith and its place in the modern world. He finds a country full of varied unique cultures and deep seeded traditions, facing a strange unknown future as the outside world begins to encroach on their once secluded homeland.

First comes Bodhicitta

Posted: 22 Feb 2012 06:00 AM PST

A Bodhisattva is a Bodhisattva on the grounds of 'producing the mind that is bodhi' (bodhicittotpada).  The endeavor or resolution (pranidhâna) to win supreme enlightenment does not come before the production of the mind that is bodhi (hereafter, Bodhicitta).  Incidentally, the Sanskrit word, pranidhâna can mean the following:  application employment, exertion, endeavor, respectful behavior, towards, submission to the will of; profound meditation; vehement desire; vow.

The mind that is bodhi, i.e., Bodhicitta, is more like a seed in the beginning—but still a profound seed.  In fact, we are implicitly Buddhas with Bodhicitta according to the Avatamsaka Sutra.  And when we take into consideration that this precious seed has to be cultivated and protected to grow properly, pranidhâna comes into play.  We cannot not reach supreme Buddhahood without applying (pranidhâna) ourselves to expanding Bodhicitta.  This is the task of a genuine Bodhisattva. This is also what prajña-paramita is about, the perfection of discernment:  the ability to distinguish Buddha Mind from illusory, empty phenomena.

Another point worth making on this same track, one does not need to go to a Zen center and go through a ceremony such as receiving the Bodhisattva precepts (generally called "jukai" which refers to the Bodhisattva precepts).  This is simply a ritual.  By just receiving the Bodhisattva precepts the recipient has not actually attained the profound state of Bodhicitta.  In the Samdhinirmocana Sutra Bodhicitta is described as,

"beyond this world, cannot be formulated by concept or speech, is extremely radiant, the image of the Ultimate, immaculate, unshakable, and very bright like the steady glow of a lamp on a calm night."

I would add to this that Bodhiicitta is beyond determination.  This means that it does not fall within the Five Aggregates (pañcaskandha), the twelve âyatanas (elements of sense-perception), including the eighteen dhatus (physical elements).  It is utterly increate and dynamic.

7 Wonders of India: Mahabodhi Temple

Mahabodhi Temple is located in Bodhgaya in Gaya district of Bihar. Constructed of brick, the temple is surrounded on all four sides by stone railings, about two metres high. The railings reveal two distinct types, both in style as well as the materials used. This is the place where Buddha attained enlightenment. Spiritual Consciousness Emperor Asoka visited Bodh Gaya with the intention of establishing a monastery and shrine. As part of the temple, he built the diamond throne (called the Vajrasana), attempting to mark the exact spot of where the Buddha's enlightenment was established. It is one of the oldest brick structures to have survived in eastern India.

Why people search for help with pain and stress?

Posted: 22 Feb 2012 05:00 AM PST

Article by Cathi Churchill

"I just want my life back."

One of the things I learned over the years in working with clients with stress has been that, for most, there is a clear connection between the pain they were experiencing and stress. Quite simply....there is a connection.

If you can effectively reduce stress, then the body naturally relaxes. When the body begins to relax so do the muscles. And, when the muscles in the body relax is when the pain being experienced also begins to subside.

If you have pain and are coping in with stress, you may understand how it can become the focal point of your life. For many, there are some practical things they CAN do that can make a big difference. I am a believer in the healing benefits of balance. It is important to both follow the advice of a trusted medical provider...someone that truly cares about your health, wellbeing, AND who is willing to listen to you.

And, there are some proven holistic practices that have proven effective in managing pain and stress reduction such as: * Energy healing or healing touch* Healthy deep breathing* Massage* Guided imagery* Meditation* Music therapy* Mindfulness meditation

There is also another way to manage stress and reduce pain that is often overlooked. The power of touch. Just being touched in a loving and gentle way CAN effectively reduce pain and stress... One of my basic beliefs is that each person carries his/her own wisdom about what would be most helpful to them.

Whether one realizes it or not, each one of us is on own healing path. As health care providers, one of the most important goals is to help someone figure out what first steps feel right for them in managing their stress. There are a lot of stress solutions, but only a handful that a person feels comfortable enough with to consistently integrate into their lives. Whatever those steps turn out to be will most certainly have a positive effect on their pain management goals. To learn more about the connection between pain and stress, visit:! http:// www.controlmystress.com.

Frequent Massage Therapy Can Reduce The Dangers Of Stress

Posted: 22 Feb 2012 04:00 AM PST

Article by Allen B. Ury

With stress being the nation's number-one health problem, it's time for people to reexamine the ancient and clinically proven art of massage. Here are some quantifiable health benefits of this increasingly popular therapeutic technique.

Researchers are finding more and more links between stress and illness. Whether it comes from a sudden trauma like the death of a family member, from prolonged emotional strain caused by a divorce, or simply from the day-to-day hassles associated with work, commuting, family and paying the bills, stress can weaken the immune system, cause headaches, irritability, high blood pressure, sleeping disorders and may even play a factor in cancer and heart disease. Experts estimate that from 75 to 90 percent of doctor's visits are for stress-related illnesses. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) estimates that stress costs American businesses approximately 0 billion annually.

Stress is a problem that, if not addressed, can take a big chunk from your pocketbook, if not years off your life. The world isn't going to get any easier to live in, so what can you do to alleviate its ill-effects?

One increasingly popular tool is frequent massage therapy. An ancient practice that has gained wide acceptance in North America over the past few decades, this direct "hands on" approach to stress reduction has, in a wide range of studies, proven to have strong and measurable affects on stress.

Some quantifiable health benefits of massage therapy techniques include:

* It can reduce or eliminate lower back pain while improving overall range-of-motion.* It stimulates the lymphatic system, which may strengthen immunity.* It can reduce the stiffness and pain associated with arthritis.* It increases joint flexibility, and often reduces muscle spasms and cramping.* When applied to asthmatic children, massage has been shown to increase pulmonary function and increase peak air flow.* It has been shown to reduce diastolic blood pres! sure and lower stress hormones such as cortisol.* It releases endorphins - the brain's natural painkillers - which can, in turn, enhance one's mood, relieving symptoms of depression and anxiety.* In some studies, massage has been shown to relieve the pain of migraine headaches.* Massage applied to preterm infants has been shown to improve weight gain.

Many hospitals are now using massage to help relieve stress and discomfort in their patients, particularly cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Bodywork and massage has also become a key component of hospice care.

Naturally, the more frequently you are able to take advantage of massage, the greater your benefits are likely to be. It is also important to find a Massage Therapy who you like and trust, and who can devise a routine that addresses your specific needs.

With stress being the nation's number-one health problem, it's time for people to reexamine the ancient and clinically proven art of massage.

And if you're looking for a fulfilling, "hands-on" career where you can help people one-on-one, you should seriously find a Massage Therapy Program and consider a field in massage.

To Turn Off Stress, Turn to Your Breath

Posted: 22 Feb 2012 03:00 AM PST

Article by Woodson Merrell, M.D.

A new study shows that cancer cells migrate and thrive in the presence of stress hormones. Studies such as this reinforce what I tell my patients: Actively working to transform your reaction to stress is the single most important step you can make to take back your vital energy and improve your health.

Notice that I wrote "transform your reaction" and not "cut stress from your life." It's often hard to change the fabric of our lives. But you can turn down your reactions to life's events and turn on a calmer way of being. Once you are calm, you can become aware and better choose how to respond to situations, further transforming your reaction to stress. Your health will benefit in many ways.

Our body has two nervous systems: fight or flight and calming. The hormones produced by your sympathetic nervous system during a stressful or fight or flight response are cortisol and adrenaline. Your body releases these when you react to something you perceive as stressful-whether it's a traffic jam, a sick child, or a deadline at work.

Ideally, after the excitement, our fight or flight system turns off and the calming parasympathetic part of the nervous system takes over. But researchers are finding that today many people have high levels of cortisol all day; they're constantly perceiving their environment as stressful. The result is chronic health problems, including high blood pressure, poor digestion, heart disease and general fatigue.

You can turn on your calming system and decrease the amount of stress hormones in your blood in one easy step: Focus on your breath. Just perform this simple in-and-out breath break anywhere and anytime: in a parking lot or on a train or bus, in your office, at home. Studies of this technique show that it results in slower pulse, lower blood pressure, relaxed intestinal muscles and lower cortisol, adrenaline and blood carbon dioxide levels.

Breath Break

Sit up straight, close your eyes.
Breathe in through your nose to the count ! of four, focusing on the sensation of the air moving through your nostrils. Breathe out for a count of four, feeling the air as it leaves your nose.
Pause for a beat at the end of your exhale before you breathe in again. Continue for two minutes.

If an idea starts spinning through your brain during this breath break, just say to yourself, "breathing," and gently bring your focus back to your breath. The idea is not to engage in thoughts-just to focus on your breath.

Ideally, you should take a breath break every two hours throughout the day. It's an especially helpful exercise to do upon waking in the morning-just sit at the edge of your bed first thing in the morning, for 15 minutes if possible. Or, if you wake in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep, focus on your breath, gently moving aside intruding thoughts of your daytime life.

You can move this stress-reduction break toward traditional meditation by introducing a word such as "calm," "peace," "om"-or any other sound or word that works for you. As long as you focus on the word and not the thoughts that come unwittingly to mind, you are helping to turn on the calming systems in your body.

There are many types of meditation, including mindfulness meditation, during which you focus on thinking kind thoughts about objects or people in your life. There are also many resources where you can learn meditation techniques, including books, CD's and downloads. But the simple breath-break skill that I've described here is a good place to start.

You will find, as millions have before you, that breath breaks and meditation are useful skills that can transform your response to stress and improve your health throughout your life.

Biofeedback Stress

Posted: 22 Feb 2012 12:00 AM PST

Article by Michael Logan

Can learning biofeedback cause stress? For awhile it might, but I think that biofeedback is an excellent tool to have on board for those moments when I switch from eustress to distress, and want to flip back.

In other words, distress is not something I need to experience continually, even in a war zone.

In my house, while we do have economic problems to face, for example, there is no need to fill my body with the kind of adrenalin and cortisol required to fight for my life, run for my life, or freeze.

(Honey Do lists are known to bring on fight or flight chemistry, though).

So if I find myself getting distressed over the lack of follow through by my child in the bathroom pick-up department, I need to find a thought and breathing pattern that will first of all move me back to eustress, the helpful stress that helps me find solutions.

I have tried a number of different tools over the decades, including a number of biofeedback solutions like bio-dots, handwarming, EEG neurofeedback, and heart rate variability biofeedback, and the one which has proven to be the most powerful and easy to use has been heart rate variability biofeedback for stress.

Probably one of the reasons it is so powerful but easy to learn is that heart rate variability biofeedback is based on some newer discoveries about the heart's own nervous system.

We all know and understand that the heart impacts every cell in our body every time it beats, either electro-magnetically or pneumatically, but no one knew that the heart had a very sophisticated nervous system that operates independently of the brain in our heads.

In fact the heart sends more data to the brain than the brain sends to the heart, and there is enough intelligence in the heart's nervous system that it can learn and make decisions, and that is what makes heart rate variability biofeedback such a wonderful biofeedback stress tool.

I first heard about heart rate variability for biofeedback stress in a list serve for EE! G neurof eedback providers, and because I knew they were a dedicated and committed crew, I decided to check it out, found a hospital nearby where everyone on staff had learned the heart rate variability biofeedback tool, much to the delight of their patients.

Everyone on staff at a large hospital was using the tool and job satisfaction had improved? At a hospital, which is a stressful place to work?

So I went to a workshop there and ended up buying the software, somewhat worried that installing it and learning the process would be stressful, as I am not an intuitive user of computers.

Well, the installation was not hard, and using the tool proved to be a snap, and much to my surprise, I began to be able to generate long periods, up to 20 minutes of heart rate variability coherence which felt wonderful.

However, an effective biofeedback stress tool would not involve carrying a computer with me, so was the tool portable? Could I use it on the run, so to speak?

Absolutely, after six practices, perhaps three hours, I was able to use the Quick Coherence Tool, and my cue thought, and I could feel the change to coherence.

Actually a large part of the training is understanding that the heart's intelligence is affiliative and cooperative, and cuing that intelligence produces a discernible change in feelings, a very pleasant feeling.

In fact, I cue that physiology frequently just because I like to feel good.

So now I am moving away from using the heart rate variability biofeedback as a stress reduction tool and in to a proactive health and brain fitness tool.

Brain fitness? Yes, a coherent heart rate variability opens the higher perceptual centers of the brain for good decision making.

I began to teach this tool to my domestic violence guys, and many were amazed to see how quickly, even when sitting quietly, that their thoughts impacted their feelings, and how they were able to manage that physiology by changing thoughts from stressful to gratitude for example.

So I would suggest that heart rate variability biofeedback is a wonderful biofeedback stress tool.

Avatar - Top 5 Spiritual Lessons Revealed from the Movie Avatar

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 10:00 PM PST

Article by Amy C.

Avatar, a 2009 movie directed by James Cameron, has several spiritual lessons embedded in it. Here are the top 5 spiritual lessons from the well acclaimed must-watch movie.

1. Everything is Alive. Each particle of creation is filled with awareness, life force energy, spirit, and intelligence. These objects have different consciousness than ours. The universal consciousness, also known as 'Animism', is an integral part of several primitive cultures. This beautiful planet on which we live is not a dead lump of rocks circulating around the sun in space. Everything in this earth is pulsating with energy. Every culture knows it differently. Chinese calls it Chi, Indians call it Prana, Japanese call it Ki. The "bio-botanical neural network" described in the movie is real and we can experience it by increasing our consciousness. If there is one thing that I take home from this movie, it is that we should treat this earth and every living and non-living thing on this earth with respect and love. The "tree of souls" is as real as you believe it to be.

2. Love is the most powerful purifier of all. When our heart is filled with love, it heals us. This positive frequency goes out from us and resonates with everything around us. The heart filled with love creates electromagnetic field that affects the physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual well-being. Love purifies the spirit. It cleanses the soul.

3. Everything is born twice. Your physical birth is simply the beginning of your consciousness. What you do with your life and how you earn your place in the community decides your second birth. Most people never reach the level of consciousness to be born again. To be born again, a person has to earn his or her place in the community. A real warrior has to earn place in the community by cultivating fearlessness and good heart.

4. Balance is the key to all life. "Mother earth does not take sides; she protects only the balance of life," a quote from movie reveals that mother earth p! romotes balance and harmony over everything else. Several Hindu and Zen spiritual theories promote balance and harmony as well. For long term sustainability, nothing takes precedence of balance.

5. This world is a collaboration of energies and every individual has something to contribute. Everybody has a purpose in life. Living a purposeful life puts you in attunement with rest of the universe. All the life force energy comes to your aid when your purpose is in attunement with betterment of the universe as a whole. "All energy is only borrowed...You have to give it back" - a direct quote from the movie reveals the quintessential aspect of how energy of both living and non-living things interacts and creates our universe.

Living your life by these 5 principles is bound to fill your life with love, joy, and serenity.

Water Fountains & Spirituality: Ancient Secrets of Spirituality Revealed

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 08:00 PM PST

Article by Amy C.

There is a direct correlation between water and spirituality in several different cultures. For instance, Indians believe that water is the creative life force. The Chinese believe that water is a very strong feng shui element. In western culture, catholic churches place significant importance on water as well. According to Christianity, it is believed that pouring water over the head for the count of 3 times liberates one from the original sin.

"Fountain of life" is the symbolic representation of water in Bible (Psalm 36). As discussed above, one of the initiation rituals of Baptism involves sprinkling of water over the head for purification.

Its ability to take the shape of its container is what separates water from most of the other materials. This "flexibility" of water is regarded highly among the spiritual guru's and monks. They really appreciate the ability of water to take any form whatsoever. According to Zen theory, this ability is an ultimate spiritual point in one's journey towards enlightenment.

What limits us from reaching the next level of spiritual growth is the constant chatter of mind and ego distractions. Non-attachment is a state of mind where you don't let external event bother you at all. This place of "letting whatever happen be okay" is the state where spiritual growth and enlightenment begins.

As water trickles through the tabletop fountain, it takes whichever path it is offered. It takes whichever shape it is given. It is not attached to the pre-destined path. This is a true sign of "non-attachment". There is no strain or resistance in water as it flows through the path it is offered. It simply takes the path without any resistance. Our lives would be a lot more easy-going and relaxed only if nature of our minds resembled with the nature of water.

In today's world, spirituality is important part of our life. A spiritual lifestyle is truly easy to live and there are many options. We are spiritually developing as a civilization. Our civilizati! on has b een expanding its consciousness. A tabletop fountain helps you create calm and tranquil lifestyle by its very nature. It is an ideal tool to start off your spiritual journey. In addition to its symbolic connotation with spirituality and religion, a tabletop fountain has many health benefits. It purifies the air that surrounds us. As water re-circulates through the tabletop fountain, it adds moisture to the air that surrounds it. This results in purification and cleansing of the air that we breathe. Moisturized air helps us reduce the symptoms of itchy and dry skin.

How Can Common Shoulder Problems Be Treated?

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 08:00 PM PST

shoulder injuries, bone, joint, rotator cuff, tendinitis, bursitis
CREDIT: Shoulder image via Shutterstock

[This is the second of two columns on shoulder problems. Read the first column, on common types of shoulder injuries.]

The shoulder is made up of three bones: the collarbone, the shoulder blade and the upper arm bone. The shoulder is the body's most movable joint. It is also unstable because the ball of the upper arm is larger than the shoulder socket that holds it. The unstable shoulder is held in place by soft tissue: muscles, tendons and ligaments.

Common shoulder problems include dislocation, separation, torn rotator-cuff, frozen shoulder, fracture, arthritis, tendinitis and bursitis. The rotator cuff is defined as the set of muscles and tendons that secures the arm to the shoulder joint and permits the arm to rotate.

Doctors diagnose shoulder problems by studying your medical history, giving you a physical examination and performing tests such as x-rays, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Shoulder problems are most often first treated with RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation):

  • Rest the shoulder for two days.
  • Ice the injured area for twenty minutes, four to eight times per day.
  • Compress the painful area to reduce swelling.
  • Elevate the injured area with a pillow to keep it above the level of the heart.

Other treatments:

  • Slings are used often to keep an injured shoulder in place.
  • After rest, stretching and exercise can improve range of motion, strengthen muscles, and prevent injury.
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen are used to reduce pain and swelling.
  • Ultrasound is used to warm deep tissues and improve blood flow.
  • An injection of a corticosteroid drug into the shoulder is often recommended if the injury does not improve in the first few weeks.
  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) with a small battery-operated unit may be used to reduce pain by blocking nerve impulses.
  • When tears are severe, surgery may be required. Seniors often can be treated without surgery for a complete rotator-cuff tear.

Here are some easy exercises to strengthen shoulder muscles and prevent injuries:

  • Attach elastic tubing to a doorknob. Pull the elastic tubing slowly toward your body. Hold for a count of five. Repeat five times with each arm. Perform twice a day.
  • Lean forward and place your hands on a wall with your feet shoulder-width apart. Slowly perform a push-up. Hold for a count of five. Repeat five times. Perform twice a day.
  • Sit upright in a chair with armrests. With your feet touching the floor, use your arms to rise slowly. Hold for a count of five. Repeat five times. Perform twice a day.

An aerobic exercise program will help improve the blood flow to a tendon or bursa. This helps reduce soreness. Smokers should quit smoking so more oxygen reaches the injured tendon. This will help the injury heal faster.

Jesus & Buddha.

If Jesus and Buddha were to meet, they would recognize one another as fellow prophets because they were teaching the same truths. Both stayed in the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights and were tempted by evil, Jesus by Satan and Buddha by the demon Mara and his daughters. Jesus's original teachings promoted peace and turning the other cheek, passive resistance rather than armed insurrection. Marcus Borg, a Christian and Jesus scholar, focuses on this basic aspect of Christianity by selecting a range of quotations from the Gospels and pairing them with parallel sayings by the Buddha. For example, whereas Jesus said, 'Blessed are the poor, for yours is the kingdom of God,' Buddha said, 'Let us live most happily, possessing nothing; let us feed on joy, like the radiant gods.' It is surprising, to a reader familiar only with the Bible, to find how similar the words of the two religious leaders actually are. When we compare two ancient spiritual traditions like Buddhism and Christianity, what we see is a striking similarity between the narratives of the founding masters: in the case of Christianity, Jesus Christ, and in the case of Buddhism, the Buddha. I see a very important parallel: in the very lives of the [founders] the essence of their teachings is demonstrated. For example... the essence of the Buddha's teaching is embodied in the Four Noble Truths: the truth of suffering, the truth of the origin of suffering, the truth of the cessation of suffering, and the truth of ...

Treat stress with pets

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 07:00 PM PST

Article by Vicky

Having animal friends at home of course wonderful. At leisure, you can bring your pet's favorite play.

Moreover, there are studies proving that proper pet health benefits. Its presence can help reduce the risk of heart disease, stress, and even can make you avoid other serious diseases, as quoted from pages Shine.

But, of course, not all pets characters are created equal. Some, perhaps too risky endanger your life. Well, so no one pet, the following can you make a guide to choosing a pet at home.

1. Dog

"Getting a dog can bring benefits to human happiness and longevity is remarkable," the judge said Marty Becker, DVM, author of The Healing Power of Pets.

In the study also stated that having a dog can lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides, can even live longer after suffering a heart attack. Not only that, other benefits can also make your body fitter owners, especially, if you and your beloved pet is often a leisurely stroll activity during morning and afternoon.

Getting a dog is also useful to increase happiness. "Just stroking a dog such as spa treatments," says Dr. Becker. "After only one or two minutes (caressing) You have a positive neurochemicals such as dopamine and serotonin. And the dogs get the same assistance. Dogs also contribute to drug and detect cancer."

Even so, you still have to carefully choose a dog. Some types of dogs that furry much, pleased cause allergies. But, take it easy, you can choose the dog that is safe, such as poodle or poodle mix (labradoodles or gold-doodle), or a Portuguese water dog (Obama's choice).

Other tips to reduce the allergic reaction that is by treating the dog properly. At least, bathing them once a week with additive-free shampoo.

2. Cat

More than 30 percent of Americans live with at least one cat in the house. Could be, they have earned benefits such as lowering stress levels.

Influence memiara cat on stress reduction is then proven through research on a number of stock! brokers who have high blood pressure. After they keep adopting a cat or a dog, stress that they feel a gradual decline.

Cats can be categorized as a pet that can be healthy for the owner. Researchers at the University of Minnesota recently found again that people who have never memiara cats have 40 percent higher risk of death from heart attack compared with those who are adopting cats.

Many people claim that when they're sick or upset, their beloved cat can understand in a way is always nearby. The presence of this cat makes the owner feel comfortable and calm.

Dr. Becker noted that the cat has a temperature of about 101.5 degrees and snoring with a vibration of 25 vibrations per second, the frequency of which can help lower blood pressure.

It is true that many people are allergic to cats than dogs, especially if located close to the children. "Most of the allergic animals appear in children," says Dr. Beck. For that, we recommend, if you have children at home, avoid to maintain a cat.

However, some types of cats such as the American shorthair and Siamese are generally friendly to children.

3. Fish

"Seeing the fish, such as listening to music, can divert your attention in a good way," said Dr. Becker. Many studies show that spending time in nature and about wildlife can reduce stress and improve welfare.

Added, the existence of aquarium fish at home allows you to undergo a healing action. "This could be a small ecosystem in your house," says Dr. Becker.

Watching the fish gliding in the water can offer a sense of calm and can relieve stress. That is why, many doctor's waiting room filled with aquariums. In fact, one study found that the stress felt by patients when will undergo dental surgery, will decline when they looked at the fish in the aquarium fish for 20 minutes.

Some fish such as tetras bloodfin, bettas, and goldfish can be an interesting pet. If you are stressed at work, try installing the desktop aquarium and let your attention drift. This ca! n be a p owerful sedative.

4. Bird

In addition to fish, animals can be kept to a small space at home is a bird. The beauty of his voice can provide a sense of relaxed, even able to generate energy. These animals provide the same interactive fun such as cats and dogs.

If you do not have any place to keep birds, you can just see the wild birds that danced above the tree.

To attract attention, try to scatter the seeds in the yard, secured, these little birds will come and perch for a while there. In fact, according to research, activities like these can enhance family togetherness, if done with other family members.

Or, try the DVD version: according to the study, simply by watching videos of birds, primates, and fish, stress that you experience can come down.

5. Horse

Of course, size and power of horses to make them a little scary for a beginner. However, if it is able to control it, can provide substantial healing effect. "If you can control it, it's a sign, you can perform the control of a problem which may occur in your life," explains Dr. Becker.

That is, horses are often used as part of hundreds of treatment programs that are useful for men, women victims of violence, persons with disabilities, people with eating disorders, and other groups.
