Each week, MyHealthNewsDaily asks the experts to answer questions about your health. This week, we asked doctors: Does caffeine harm kids?

Roberta Anding, Registered Dietitian, director of sports nutrition at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston and member of the Baylor College of Medicine Faculty:

Yes. There was actually a position paper from the American Academy of Pediatrics published in May this year. There are all these new energy drinks, and the position paper said these kinds of products and high caffeine loads are not appropriate for children.

A study that came out in December 2010 in the journal Pediatrics found that 75 percent of children consume caffeine on a daily basis, and the more caffeine children consumed, the less they slept. Caffeine impacts slept, but this study showed that the old wives tale that it causes bedwetting wasn't substantiated.

There's also some evidence to suggest that if you have a child who already has an anxiety disorder, the effects of caffeine make it worse.

The other concern that I see is how parents equate sports drinks and energy drinks as the same thing. Often time the energy drinks often have significantly higher amounts of caffeine than soda.

**

Dr. Marcie Schneider, adolescent medicine physician and former member of the American Academy of Pediatrics committee on nutrition:

It is bad.

Caffeine is absorbed in every body tissue. It increases your heart rate and it increases your blood pressure. Caffeine changes your body temperature and your gastric juices. It changes how attentive you are, and can really cause trouble in terms of sleep.

Then there's moods. For some people, caffeine enhances their moods. For others it makes it worse. For kids who have some anxiety, and it may even be under control in normal conditions, caffeine can really increase anxiety.

Caffeine is a stimulant, and therefore it may change their appetite. Adolescents gain half of their adult weight in their teenage years. If caffeine curbs their appetite in some way it could affect their growth.

A lot of the issue for kids is all the energy drinks such as Red Bull and Monster. These drinks are full of other components. There's guarana, which is a plant extract and each gram of guarana is equal to 40 milligrams of caffeine as a stimulant. There's another protein called taurine, which potentiates the effect of caffeine.

**

Dr. Nicole Caldwell, assistant professor of pediatrics, Nationwide Children's Hospital, Columbus, Ohio

It's not really good for them. As far as the FDA goes, there are no current guidelines for caffeine consumption.

But the Canadian government has some guidelines. For children aged 4-6 years, the maximum recommended intake is 45 milligrams a day — about as much caffeine as found in a 12-ounce Diet Coke.

Caffeine affects the central nervous system as a stimulant. The brains of a child tend to be a little bit more sensitive to caffeine's effects than the brains of adults. Caffeine can cause them to be hyperactive, which is obvious. But it also can make them nervous, anxious, worsen stomach problems and create sleep problems.

Also if they have an undiagnosed arrhythmia, an irregular or abnormal heartbeat, caffeine increases excitability within the heart, which can exacerbate the arrhythmia.

Caffeine also constricts blood vessels. It takes 4 milligrams of caffeine per kilogram of body weight to increase blood pressure.

The evidence doesn't show that caffeine stunts growth. But if kids are drinking soda, even caffeinated tea throughout the day, they may not be taking in the amount of calcium they need.

Also, if your child is drinking a can of caffeinated soda, they are also taking in a lot of sugar, which has the second effect of tooth decay, and the growing issue of childhood obesity.

***

Ann Condon-Meyers, a registered dietitian at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh

Yes. It's a stimulant, so it's a drug.

The amount a child weighs changes the dose-response. In other words, a 60-pound child could handle 60 milligrams of caffeine in 24 hours. The problem with that is one Mountain Dew has 50 milligrams, and so does 8 ounces of most energy drinks.

Side effects include increased heart rate, increased blood pressure increased anxiety and decreased ability to sleep. They will suffer withdrawal effects just like adults if they don't have it, at the very least a headache.

To exacerbate the problem of these caffeinated drinks is the fact that many of them are in high in sugar. That's poor nutrition. When you have a kid who is drinking more than one sugary drink a day, it's a set-up for obesity.

The earlier your obesity begins in childhood, the more likely it is to follow you in adulthood. And drinking sugary caffeinated drinks is habit forming. I really fault the beverage industry for marketing to children. I think they're very clever to put caffeine in a drink because it's habit forming and it's a drug.

***

Dr. Matthew Keefer, General Pediatrician at Children's Hospital Los Angeles

I would say at best it's no harm, at worse, it can cause a lot of side effects that aren't necessary. Certainly, young children don't need any caffeine at all. If an older child has a cup of coffee or a soda every once and a while it's not a big deal.

But when it comes to energy drinks, there's no role for them in pediatrics. If you're using these for working out or to enhance athletic promise, it's not a drug for that.

What happens is some kids use them in replacement of good hydration, which is worse. Caffeine can cause you to lose more water.

We do use caffeine in young infants if they're having trouble remembering to breathe. Occasionally it's used for some people with migraine headaches, but beyond that, there's no medical use really.

There's a reason why caffeine in the form of coffee is one of the highly subsidized corporate perks. It keeps people alert and working. But it's a problem if you're talking about teenagers who need a lot of sleep. They probably need a good 8 plus or 10 hours a night, and teenagers as whole tend to get a lot less sleep. Many use caffeine to stay awake, and using a drug to make up for a deficit and it isn't good.

Faye Wong - Heart Sutra (2009 Live Version) 王菲心經現場版

Faye Wong performed a new version of the Heart Sutra for the Famen Temple Ceremony on 05/09/2009. It was her first public solo performance in about 5 years. We then consider Avalokiteshvaras reformulation of such instruction to correct Shariputras misunderstanding of it. The basis for this reformulation is the teaching of prajna in place of jnana, or wisdom ...

Post-Traumatic Stress Replicated in Mice

Researchers have found a way to trigger the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder in mice, which they say may help reveal a way to treat PTSD in people.

By coupling an electric shock with an injection of steroid hormones, researchers caused mice to behave as though they had PTSD, their study says.

People with PTSD have vivid recollections of a traumatic eventand an inability to place that memory in context. They are plagued by fearful memories that come on suddenly, often triggered by harmless cues.

"In an extremely stressful situation, because all the attention of the patient is focused on one single, salient, trauma-related cue," other details surrounding the traumatic event are not processed by the brain well enough to be remembered, explained lead researcher Aline Desmedt, a neuroscientist at the University of Bordeaux in France.

In the study, Desmedt and her colleagues set out to see if they could bring on PTSD-like memory impairmentsin mice — that is, if they could cause the mice to show fear in response to incorrect threat cues.

Shock and stress

The researchers placed mice in a Plexiglas chamber and gave them foot shocks immediately after playing a tone, causing the mice to associate the noise with the painful experience. They then shocked a different group of mice without the tone — a method known to cause mice to associate the shocks with the chamber they're in (the "context" of their trauma).

Immediately after the shocks, the researchers injected corticosterone into each rodent's hippocampus, a brain region that is important to memory and seems impaired in PTSD patients. Corticosterone is a hormone involved in stress responses.

The mice that hadn't heard the tone showed fear in response to the noise, but not to being placed in the chamber — they seemingly forgot which cue was connected to being shocked.

In another experiment, instead of injecting mice with the hormone, the researchers restrained the mice in a cylinder for 20 minutes, which triggering a release of the animals' own stress hormones. Again, the mice forgot their predictive cue.

In all, the results suggest that a PTSD-like memory impairment results from excessive stress hormone production along with an exposure to an intense threat, Desmedt said.

Looking at the brains of mice, the researchers found that when PTSD-like memories form, activity in the hippocampus becomes very low and activity in the amygdala— a brain area involved in the processing and remembering of emotional reactions — becomes very high.

What the findings mean for people

These findings could "open the way to the understanding of the molecular bases [of PTSD] and, as a consequence, to the development of efficient therapies," Desmedt said.

Not everyone is convinced the mice in this experiment make a good model of PTSD in people. The study's findings "are extremely relevant to understanding normative stress responses, but it is hard to see how the findings relate to PTSD," said Rachel Yehuda, a psychiatrist and neuroscientist who specializes in PTSD at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.

To Yehuda, a major issue with the study is that there was no variation between the mice's responses. "The fact is that we don't all get PTSD from traumatic events," Yehuda told MyHealthNewsDaily.

Further, she said PTSD symptoms are present long after the traumatic event, something the researchers didn't show with their mice. "Everyone looks like they have PTSD right after something bad happens — that's normal," Yehuda said.

The study appears online today (Feb. 24) in the journal Science.

Stress-Busting Suggestions That Guarantee Your Peace of Mind

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 11:00 AM PST

Article by Felicity Maris Modesto

Heightened stress is the bane of modern living. Ironically, despite the many advantages technology offers in making life simpler and more convenient for all of us, we find ourselves living more uncomfortable, complex lives with hardly enough time left for relaxation. Because of the speed and frequency whereby we are bombarded by the various demands of our work and personal relationships, increased stress has become our constant albeit unwanted companion. The result: We run a greater risk of acquiring a variety of diseases both physiological and psychological in nature.

One efficient method of combating stress is through relaxation--a natural process inherent in all of us. Varied relaxation techniques like deep breathing, yoga, visualization, and progressive muscle relaxation instantaneously trigger our bodies' innate relaxation response. Practising any of them regularly enables us to cope with stress on the spot. On a broad spectrum, they contribute to the improvement of our overall emotional well-being, reducing our susceptibility to depression and anxiety by making us more calm and cheerful. But apart from these commonly known stress reduction techniques, there are certain typical activities we do out of inclination or habit that automatically relax us and promote a more positive frame of mind without our being conscious of how they impact us. Delighting in them regularly, we regain our emotional equilibrium, helping us get back into that more optimistic, peaceful, and harmonious side of our selves.Let us identify them:

*Strolling as we enjoy the beauty of our surroundings When was the last time we have taken a leisurely walk around the park or neighbourhood? Taking time to take in the beauty of our surroundings as our bodies benefit from the exercise of walking does tremendous good not only for our senses but also for our minds. Because of the fast paced life imposed on us, we hardly have the time to appreciate these natural pleasures found in the beauty of our surroundings and ob! tain the ir calming benefits, which all of us can readily acquire any time we please.

*Indulging our curiosityCuriosity is the initiator that propels us toward success. And this is one of the gifts all humans are endowed with. Indulging our curiosity by studying things or aspects that interest us automatically relaxes us without us knowing it.

*Enjoying music Music is said to be the language of the soul. And whether that language is something we can comprehend or not, the soothing benefits of music immediately work their way into our psyche, affording us a much-needed escape from troublesome thoughts.

*Remaining still As ludicrous as this may sound, these days remaining still without thinking of anything has become a luxury most of us find difficult to afford due to the many worries preoccupying our minds. Meditating is a formal term we use for clearing our thoughts, which segues to relaxation. Once we are relaxed, we become in tune to our surroundings and oblivious of our own thoughts, which instantaneously de-stresses us.

*Allowing creativity to take over Whether we express our creativity through painting, composing songs, dancing, or writing poems; all these serve as our emotional outlets that trigger our natural de-stressing response. One we release pent up emotions, we release stress and become relaxed.

*Feeding our spirituality Having a spiritual belief system is a human necessity. We are not physical creatures alone. The spiritual side of our nature is deeply connected to our emotional and psychological aspects, whereby each one is a reflection of the other. Whatever our spiritual beliefs may be, performing activities or rituals catering to our spirituality automatically rids us off the inner turmoil we have, which in turn translates to releasing burdensome stress.

*Bonding with our loved onesNo man is an island. Forming meaningful relationships is an integral aspect of our being that serves both our emotional and psychological needs. Thus, isolation from others makes u! s suscep tible to loneliness and depression. Spending quality time with our loved ones (family and friends) works to uplift our moods and promotes good emotional health. Whether we are just hanging out with them or crying our eyes out on their shoulders, the good feeling we obtain from the companionship and support we get from them strengthen us spiritually, emotionally, and psychologically.

Seven steps to taking control of your attention

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 11:00 AM PST

Moment to moment, the flows of thoughts and feelings, sensations and desires, and conscious and unconscious processes sculpt your nervous system like water gradually carving furrows and eventually gullies on a hillside. Your brain is continually changing its structure. The only question is: Is it for better or worse?

In particular, because of what's called "experience-dependent neuroplasticity," whatever you hold in attention has a special power to change your brain. Attention is like a combination spotlight and vacuum cleaner: it illuminates what it rests upon and then sucks it into your brain – and your self.

Therefore, controlling your attention – becoming more able to place it where you want it and keep it there, and more able to pull it away from what's bothersome or pointless (such as looping again and again through anxious preoccupations, mental grumbling, or self-criticism) – is the foundation of changing your brain, and thus your life, for the better. As the great psychologist, William James, wrote over a century ago: "The education of attention would be the education par excellence."

But to gain better control of attention – to become more mindful and more able to concentrate – we need to overcome a few challenges. In order to survive, our ancestors evolved to be stimulation-hungry and easily distracted, continually scanning their interior and their environment for opportunities and threats, carrots and sticks. There is also a natural range of temperament, from focused and cautious "turtles" to distractible and adventuresome "jackrabbits." Upsetting experiences – especially traumatic ones – train the brain to be vigilant, with attention skittering from one thing to another. And modern culture makes us accustomed to an intense incoming fire hose of stimuli, so anything less – like the sensations of simply breathing – can feel unrewarding, boring, or frustrating.

To overcome these challenges, it's useful to cultivate some neural factors of attention – in effect, getting your brain on your side to help you get a better grip on this spotlight/vacuum cleaner.

But how can we train our attention?

You can use one or more of the seven factors below at the start of any deliberate focusing of attention – from keeping your head in a dull business meeting to contemplative practices such as meditation or prayer – and then let them move to the background as you shift into whatever the activity is. You can also draw upon one or more during the activity if your attention is flagging. They are listed in an order that makes sense to me, but you can vary the sequence. (There's more information about attention, mindfulness, concentration, and contemplative absorption inBuddha's Brain.)

Here we go.

1. Set the intention to sustain your attention, to be mindful. You can do this both top-down, by giving yourself a gentle instruction to be attentive, and bottom-up, by opening to the sense in your body of what mindfulness feels like.

2. Relax. For example, take several exhalations that are twice as long as your inhalations. This stimulates the calming, centering parasympathetic nervous system and settles down the fight-or-flight stress-response sympathetic nervous system that jiggles the spotlight of attention this way and that, looking for carrots and sticks.

3. Without straining at it, think of things that help you feel cared about – that you matter to someone, that you belong in a relationship or group, that you are seen and appreciated, or even cherished and loved. It's OK if the relationship isn't perfect, or that you bring to mind people from the past, or pets, or spiritual beings. You could also get a sense of your own goodwill for others, your own compassion, kindness, and love. Warming up the heart in this way helps you feel protected, and it brings a rewarding juiciness to the moment – which support #4 and #5 below.

4. Think of things that help you feel safer, and thus more able to rest attention on your activities, rather than vigilantly scanning. Notice that you are likely in a relatively safe setting, with resources inside you to cope with whatever life brings. Let go of any unreasonable anxiety, any unnecessary guarding or bracing.

5. Gently encourage some positive feelings, even mild or subtle ones. For example, think of something you feel glad about or grateful for; go-to's for me include my kids, Yosemite, and just being alive. Open as you can to an underlying sense of well-being that may nonetheless contain some struggles or pain. The sense of pleasure or reward in positive emotions increases the neurotransmitter, dopamine, which closes a kind of gate in the neural substrates of working memory, thus keeping out any "barbarians," any invasive distractions.

6. Get a sense of the body as a whole, its many sensations appearing together each moment in the boundless space of awareness. This sense of things as a unified gestalt, perceived within a large and panoramic perspective, activates networks on the sides of the brain (especially the right – for right-handed people) that support sustained mindfulness. And it de-activates the networks along the midline of the brain that we use when we're lost in thought.

7. For 10-20-30 seconds in a row, stay with whatever positive experiences you're having or lessons you're learning. Since "neurons that fire together, wire together," this savoring and registering helps weave the fruits of your attentive efforts into the fabric of your brain and your self.

Best Wishes for 2010 - Spiritual Guidance for the New Year

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 10:00 AM PST

Article by Semele Xerri

I have a tradition of pulling a Tarot card as an overall guiding message for the world in general at the beginning of each new year. I use my beloved Thoth deck, which has some differences to the traditional Tarot but in my experience is deeply powerful and empowering.

The card I drew to guide us in 2010 is the nine of cups, subtitled Happiness in my favourite Thoth deck. It's a beautiful card showing nine purple cups topped by golden lotus flowers stacked in three rows of three like a champagne fountain, with streams of liquid gold flowing bountifully down from the top cups to overflow onto the ground. It looks like a celebration in itself and that is exactly what this card means in its simplest sense.

The nine of cups reminds us to celebrate every moment for the blessings it can bring - the successes as well as the failures, the good as well as the bad. No matter how bad a day we've had there is always something, tiny though it may be, for which we can be genuinely thankful. Things may not always be perfect, but if in every moment we are willing to focus on and appreciate the joy and beauty all around us wherever and whenever we find it, then we become a source of that beauty and joy for others. Happiness is contagious and infectious, and when we choose to be happy it overflows to touch everyone with whom we have contact, which in turn creates more beauty and joy.........you get the idea. 2010 is to be a year of team spirit, co-operation and compassion, for what is happiness if it is not shared with others?

At a spiritual level, the nine of cups indicates an inner fulfilment which can only come from a sense of one-ness with the universe and a connection to the inexhaustible Source of love that flows continuously through and around us, and from which we can never be separated. So don't miss out! If you have yet to really feel and know that connection then 2010 is the year to find what it means for you, and how you can best maintain it. An important aspect of this card is also l! iving in a spirit of trust, being optimistic and believing in the benevolence of the universe which is so important as we face inevitable change. There will be no doom-mongering from me!

Traditionally, the nine of cups is known as the wish card. It indicates that you have the power to manifest your heart's desires, and always comes with a gentle reminder; "so be careful what you wish for!" I am deeply comforted and uplifted by this card for 2010. It tells me that if I remain conscious of my connection with the Divine, gratefully accept everyday blessings and keep my heart warm and open to everyone I meet, then I can achieve my wish. What is my wish? That every soul on this planet and beyond will want to do the same. To quote one of my all-time favourite films, relevant for every season, "It's a Wonderful Life"!

Mind Control Marketing, How and Why it Works

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 09:00 AM PST

Mindfulness
by RubyJi

Article by William J. Froning

Internet marketing is a highly competitive means of doing business. The number and types of products available is endless. To be successful the internet marketer has to be able to develop strategies and techniques that convince consumers that their product is the one they want. There are many effective methods available to the internet marketer to accomplish this. The use of mind control marketing has proven to be an effective technique to improve sales.

Just what is mind control? Basically, it is the use of various methods to influence the human mind. The use of these methods will influence the thinking of an individual in unconscious ways. The effects upon the unconscious mind will then result in changes in the individual's behavior and emotions. This subvert manipulation will effect the way one's decisions are formed.

There is present day thinking that this technique is negative in that it effects an individual's freedom and independence in making choices and decisions. Actually, it is a neutral concept that merely attempts to communicate with one's own mind to develop abilities and potentials to their maximum level.

The works of mind control effect the human mind. With the use of these techniques it is very easy to make a person believe something is as it is presented. This technique is used in various instances and for various purposes. It is present in something as simple as influencing a child not to eat foods that are not healthy for them. Mind control is not something bad at all. It has, however, become a powerful tool that can have a very positive effect upon life and living.

Mind control has been found to be very effective in the field of marketing. It is, after all, the brain that decides whether or not to buy a specific product. Marketers can benefit greatly from the knowledge and skills of mind control in their work on the internet. While there are those who consider mind control to be an infringement upon their freedom and independence, there is no proof th! at would render mind control to be illegal or destructive.

In the field of marketing, visualizations appear to be the most effective and least invasive of the techniques. The positive aspects of this technique will simply bring about good things about the specific product. This mind control technique is very effective in every sense of the word.

Mind control can be a very powerful tool in any if not all fields in life. It should, however, be used only in a positive manner. Remember, with great power comes a great responsibility to use it wisely.

Symbolic Behavior, Behavioral Psychology, and the Clinical Importance of Evolution Science.mp4

Evolutionists have recognized the importance of the symbolic domain to an account of human behavior but in the absence of a technically adequate and evolutionarily sensible account have miscast its nature. In this paper I argue that modern behavioral psychology contains such an account, Relational Frame Theory (RFT), which defines symbolic behavior in a precise and innovative way and provides experimental data on how it develops and why it matters. The applied importance of a contextual, selectivist account of symbolic behavior is explored in a discussion of a clinical extension of RFT and Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT). I argue that acceptance, mindfulness, and values provide an evolutionarily sensible guide to the development of cooperation within people and between people that comports with what we know about symbolic behavior.

Easy Ways to Reduce Stress

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 08:00 AM PST

Article by Lydia Quinn

There's no shortage of stress in our everyday lives. However, there's many ways to reduce or minimize the effects of stress. Here are just a few of the many ways that can help you to reduce stress:

Meditation

One of the most effective ways to reduce stress is to incorporate meditation into your daily routine. Take just a few minutes a day to clear the thoughts from your mind, center yourself and concentrate on your breathing. Meditation can do wonders to ease the effects of stress on your body and mind. You may also consider practicing mindful meditation, which can be done just about anywhere. Mindful meditation reduces stress by clearing all thoughts from your mind except for a single task or activity. Whether it is driving, looking at the view from your office or eating your lunch, by simply concentrating fully on the task or activity at hand, you release all the other stressful thoughts from your mind.

Relaxation

It sounds easy, and it is. Practice relaxation by visualizing a soothing place and go to that place in your mind. Feel the breeze, feel the sand under your feet, breathe deeply and slow down your mind. Affirmations may also be helpful in relaxation. Repeat words and phrases that make you feel more relaxed.

Yoga

Often thought of as an exercise routine, yoga can also enhance relaxation and reduce overall stress. Buy a video or a book or attend a yoga class to learn some postures that will greatly enhance your health and ease the stress on your body.

Massage

This is a no brainer. Who doesn't feel better after having a massage? You can hire someone to give you a massage, have a loved one give you a massage or you can even give yourself a massage. Focus on reflexology points around the body to further enhance the effects.

Music

Many people get great stress reduction from listening to music. Whether it is their favorite CD or something that is specifically relaxing like classical music or ambient music, music can make you feel rela! xed, joy ful, excited, happy and everything in between.

Gardening

The activity of gardening can help you to meditate mindfully, center yourself and get back to what's important. The act of gardening, especially putting your hands in the dirt and growing something out of it, is especially beneficial. Growing your own fruits and vegetables is healthy in itself, as you'll be more apt to eat healthier.

Video Games

It may seem surprising, but there are many video games that can be relaxing. You can play a 3D shoot-em-up to get some frustrations out, play a relaxing flying simulation, puzzle games, hidden object games, card games or non linear games like Animal Crossing, The Sims or Wii Fit. There are many video games that can help to reduce your stress and let you have more fun too.

Meditation, Spiritual Healing and You

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 07:00 AM PST

Meditation has formed an important part of many cultures for thousands of years, the importance of its practice being noted as important on spiritual, emotional and physical levels. The practice of meditation has been widely documented to be beneficial to reducing stress levels, improving health on a physical level and to empower the individuals practising with a greater level of spiritual fulfilment. In regards to references that have been made with improved physical healing much of that can be further linked to improved emotional wellbeing and stress reduction. By reducing stress our bodies attain a healthier frequency of being, and as such creates a way of being that reduces physical dis-ease.Meditation can affect people over many different levels, with each person taking a varying level of effect from the meditation they do. In short we are all individuals, and as such achieve differing effects from the meditation we do. Though we do share common links through a diverse variety of things we do all react and behave differently to different stimulus. This is a strong point to note when you are first starting out with meditation, your results are likely to be different to other peoples. Some people take to meditation faster than others, and everyone goes to slightly different depths with it. Spiritual healers within the various cultures that still have them, go to a very deep level of trance and meditation when they are working, yet often they can so in what many would class as a waking state. Monks and others seeking enlightenment can reach levels where they go to very deep meditative states for days, free of the need for water or food due to the way they have shifted their energy levels. So whatever duration and depth you can go to and wish to go to with your meditation is totally ok, when you start out take it easy on yourself and be gentle in terms of what you do.Initially many people find that they go into a light trance, similar to the level that a person may experience whilst watching tel! evision or fish swimming in a tank. So if you are feeling that you are still conscious that's ok, the more you meditate the easier it becomes and the deeper you can go. Also you may find that using Guided Meditations, either via C.D. or mp3, are a very good way to start meditating. By using a Guided Meditation you can clear your conscious mind out of the way more easily as you just follow the words and voice of the person guiding you. This is the reason that meditation groups are a very good place for people to initiate their journey with meditation, being with a teacher who can guide you and share information with you as you begin meditating can bring you a greater state of ease and confidence with your practise. The main thing is to start off with something that is comfortable for you, be that Guided Meditation CDs and mp3s, a meditation group or just taking time quietly on your own as you learn to meditate is fine. Meditation is something that is meant to be easy, relaxing and beneficial for stress reduction, so go easy on yourself when you are learning to meditate. Then as you get further into you meditation practice you can take it further and go to greater depths, always though meditation is something to be enjoyed, something to bring you happiness and calmness. Whatever level you are and wherever you are starting from, be you just starting to learn to meditate or going to deeper spiritual places I wish you well with your journey. Enjoy your meditations and the calmness they bring to your life, Namaste!

The first Freemason

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 06:00 AM PST

Picture 7Freemasonry has a complex history—too much to discuss on this blog.  Turning to  Freemasonry in America, it played a major role in the formation of the U.S.  George Washington was a Freemason as were other Americans like Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson.

So what does Freemasonry have to do with Buddhism you ask?  You'll be surprised.  Albert Pike,  Sovereign Grand Commander of the Scottish Rite's Southern Jurisdiction, whose remains are in the House of the Temple in Washington D.C., had this to say about Buddhism.

"The first Masonic Legislator whose memory is preserved to us by history, was Buddha, who, about a thousand years before the Christian era, reformed the religion of Manous. He called to the Priesthood all men, without distinction of caste, who felt themselves inspired by God to instruct men. Those who so associated themselves formed a Society of Prophets under the name of Samaneans. They recognized the existence of a single uncreated God, in whose bosom everything grows, is developed and transformed. The worship of this God reposed upon the obedience of all the beings He created. His feasts were those of the Solstices. The doctrines of Buddha pervaded India, China, and Japan. The Priests of Brahma, professing a dark and bloody creed, brutalized by Superstition, united together against Buddhism, and with the aid of Despotism, exterminated its followers. But their blood fertilized the new doctrine, which produced a new Society under the name of Gymnosophists; and a large number, fleeing to Ireland, planted their doctrines there, and there erected the round towers, some of which still stand, solid and unshaken as at first, visible monuments of the remotest ages" (Morals and Dogma, p. 278).

The above is a little antiquarian in style not notwithstanding other problems, I bow to Albert Pike for at least having the presence of mind to make the Buddha "the first Masonic Legislator."  By making the Buddha the first Mason—if you read The Zennist bog—Freemasons have entered into the mysteries of mysteries; the religion that sets beings free from their bondage to temporal bodies (pañca-skandha) and the demiurge (i.e., Mara the Evil One).

Email Readings: Mind Tricks and Subconsious Energy

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 05:00 AM PST

Article by Jim Cassa

Email readings are a great way to get information on energy blocks we all have and to release these blockages. This is especially so with our inner selves, the mind tricks we experience on a daily basis, and how we apply our subconscious mind energy to everyday problems. A psychic email reading is a pathway to valuable answers. Psychics offer it as a tool for empowerment.

Every human being, including you reading this, has vast potential in our hearts and minds. Much of this great and beautiful potential energy we do not use. It remains latent. Then we have our mind playing tricks upon us. Our deep inner mind, the subconscious part, is both a dictator and a valuable servant. By tapping into our deep inner mind many things become possible. What seems like mind tricks before become realities as we manifest our desires into real life.

Email readings give us an opportunity to probe for and get psychic answers while staying in the privacy and comfort of our homes. Clairvoyants are good at identifying energy blocks. Once spotted these energy blocks become easier to release. Our energy can then be used for positive purposes. Joy enters into our lives and happiness becomes the norm.

The energy of electricity was an undiscovered power until someone smart enough harnessed it for our use and application. Its was present for thousands of years but untapped. We human beings are similar in that we can do many great things in life but often we feel chained and restricted. We also have untapped inner power.

Our fist step to understanding mind tricks and subconscious energy is to become aware of our inner mind. Awareness means knowing of its presence. When we know about something we very soon raise our energy and begin to steer our lives into the direction we wish to go.

Let us begin to apply our mind and inner strength in practical ways. Let us begin right now. Do you wish to wake up tomorrow at a certain time? Command your subconscious mind to take action and awaken at the appointed! hour. T he mind always listens to our higher self. You can command it into action as you desire. Our deep inner mind takes orders and listens to the outer conscious mind.

We have much to learn about the mind and the outer conscious part of us can instruct the subconscious mind on many things. You can even ask it to solve problems and give you answers and make life a better ride.

Email readings offer us a useful alternative to phone psychics. It reads the psychic energy in your life situation. It reveals mind tricks and uncovers subconscious energy. It is wise to make use of this powerful empowerment tool.

Stress and the pH miracle diet

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 02:00 AM PST

Article by Otello Zorina

The pH miracle diet is a new way to look at how you eat. By addressing each food, beverage, supplement, and additive by it's acidic or alkaline signature a balance can be negotiated. Our bodies work according to the pH scale, which works on a range of 1 to 14. A ranking of 1 on this scale denotes a high level of acid while a ranking of 14 indicates that there is a high concentration of alkaline present. A ranking of 7 on the pH scale represents neutrality in pH. The blood in the human bloodstream regulates at the level of 7.35, which is mildly alkaline. The pH miracle diet advocates keeping the intake of food into your body in line with this optimum level. The method of implementation is quite simple, by coordinating an eating planned structured around a comprehensive list of foods, and supplements you can create an effective strategy to lower acidity in your body.

Alkaline intake will counter act this stored acidity by being metabolized and neutralizing them at the source. With balance as the benchmark for a workable health plan; constant monitoring of the body's pH levels is essential. Saliva pH test strips with a base range of 4.5 to 8.5 will allow for accurate readings that can assist you in making the proper adjustments to your diet. Even with all of this knowledge and action there are outside influences that will affect your body's acid production. These outside factors will greatly determine how you will implement the alkalizing foods and supplements. The most significant of these external factors will be stress.

Stress is ubiquitous, it is everywhere and it affects everyone. This universal problem has a very traumatic effect on your body. The body works overtime to combat stress that in turn creates more stress. This vicious cycle is propagated by an increase in acid production. As stated previously, acid is a detriment to your body. When the body is overly acidic it does not run well, on the cellular level, the body cannot maintain the immune system. The circulation is adver! sely aff ected with the heart having to compensate by working harder. With the heart beating at a higher rate to push this sticky blood through the bloodstream many of these sticky cell clumps break free from the path and attach themselves to the arterial walls creating further slowdowns in the circulation. Your body needs blood to function if the blood reaching the cells and organs are of poor quality this can have serious repercussions. Stress is an acid-producing killer.

There are many techniques in addition to diet that can help in your quest for a balanced pH level. Getting the adequate rest is always the best way to achieve stress relief, as well as meditation which can be two to three times more restful and rejuvenating than actual sleep. Limiting the intake of caffeine and other stimulants also works toward lowering stress in the body by removing these narcotics from the equation. At the heart of stress reduction is eating more foods that are alkaline in nature that will neutralize the acid waste in the body. Exercising is by far the most effective way to receive direct stress relief, and will also help reduce the fat stores of the body where acid waste inhabits in abundance.

Ways Of Achieving Subconscious Mind Power

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 12:00 AM PST

Article by Greg Frost

Everyone understands the importance of the mind in any human activity; the brain is the main controlling organ in charge of each and very human development. Maintaining a good lifestyle is pretty much the success behind a good brain functioning. People have sought means and ways to have their brains or rather minds function better this has led to a number of therapies which help in creating prearranged thought setup for the benefits of achieving a desired result or lifestyle. The mind is divided into two states namely, the conscious and the subconscious states.

The mind conscious state processes about 10 percent of an event while the remaining 90 percent is processed by the subconscious mind. Achieving subconscious power can help an individual gain more exposure and benefits more from their day to day activities. There are quite a number of therapies available in which aid in developing sharp subconscious mind power. Each therapy takes on different forms and ways of affecting this, however the most effective kind of therapies are those that incorporate technology as a means of mind alteration.

The word mind alteration should not scare anyone since it's a medical term used in personal development arena in regards subconscious mind power. Among the best self development therapy is subliminal technology. This technology is quite popular among individuals today, the fact that one can attain therapy in a serene atmosphere and most of the time in their own comfort zone makes the therapy quite likeable especially to busy individuals.

All an individual requires in affecting the therapy is just a cd player, or any other form mp3 player. Playing specific subliminal sounds is very effective in bringing about certain prearranged thought setups. Subliminal sounds are produced with coded subliminal messages which only the subconscious mind can understand. These sounds are produced in high-tech sound recordings which incorporate different wave frequencies which are effective in delivering desi! red subl iminal messages into the subconscious mind.

Its should be understood that subliminal messaging does not take effect overnight but needs consistency in listening to the subliminal messages so as to bring about a desired result. One should also be sure of the specific subconscious mind power they wish to achieve before affecting any kind of subliminal therapy, for instance any individual interested in attaining more brain memory should seek to affect subliminal brain memory therapy as this is specific towards the special need of the individual.

Subliminal technology products are available from a number of outlets, purchasing subliminal products from the internet is quite recommended since an individual is likely to get good and varying offers from a number of competing sites in the industry. It is very important to visit good reputable subliminal auction sites whenever you seek to purchase these; a little research and emails to the customer support of the site you wish to purchase from can give more information of about the kind of therapy you wish to purchase. Achieving subconscious mind power is quite possible but only when good and effective therapies such as subliminal technology are in force.

"Nothing" replaces "God" in modern cosmology

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 12:00 AM PST

Nothing is a big deal in physics nowadays. As noted in a previous post, scientists have found that even seemingly empty space actually is seething with energetic activity.

So much so, as cosmologist Lawrence Krauss describes in his new book, "A Universe from Nothing," nothing can reasonably be viewed as the creative principle which brought the universe into being -- a job most religions give to God.

We have discovered that we live in a universe in which empty space -- what formerly could have passed for nothing -- has a new dynamic that dominates the current evolution of the cosmos.

We have discovered that all signs suggest a universe that could and plausibly did arise from a deeper nothing -- involving the absence of space itself -- and which may one day return to nothing via processes that may not only be comprehensible but also processes that do not require any external control or direction.

In this sense, science, as physicist Steven Weinberg has emphasized, does not make it impossible to believe in God, but rather makes it possible to not believe in God. Without science, everything is a miracle. With science, there remains the possibility that nothing is. Religious belief in this case becomes less and less necessary, and also less and less relevant.

Absolutely true.

I've finished reading Krauss' book. Now I better understand why this statement by Richard Dawkins in his afterword to "A Universe from Nothing" isn't as overblown as it will seem to many.

Even the last remaining trump card of the theologian, "Why is there something rather than nothing?" shrivels up before your eyes as you read these pages. If On the Origin of Species was biology's deadliest blow to supernaturalism, we may come to see A Universe from Nothing as the equivalent from cosmology. The title means exactly what it says. And what it says is devastating.

Devastating to religiosity. Devastating to a belief in a creator God. But for me, the message is wonderfully inspiring.

The Beatles sang, "All you need is love." I'll agree, so long as what is loved is real. Love minus reality is fantasy. Like John Lennon, I'm also a lyricist, albeit a crappy one. As shared before, here's an original song that I like to sing in the shower.

I love my dog.
I love my cat.
Only problem is,
I don't have a cat.
It's hard to love
What you don't have.

(If the song seems stupid when you just read the lyrics, believe me, it sounds way stupider when I sing it off key.)

I used to love God. Now I realize that I never did. I loved my idea of God, my fantasy of God. The real universe, nature, is so much more lovable that any imagined divinity. As Krauss says, "We need to live our experience as it is and with our eyes open. The universe is the way it is, whether we like it or not."

Speaking of "is"...

The mystery of is-ness remains even after science has discovered how a quantum vacuum of nothingness could produce not only all the stuff that exists within the vastness of space, but even space itself. So when Dawkins speaks of science coming to grips with the Big Question of "Why is there something rather than nothing?", this doesn't mean that science knows why existence itself exists.

Nor does religion. The existence of is-ness, of anything at all, is a primal mystery which almost certainly will remain an enigma to the human mind.

Why? My theory is that the question itself is meaningless from a cosmic perspective. We humans are used to everything having a cause, so we extrapolate from everyday experience to the cosmos as a whole.

Thus religions are created, to explain a creation that doesn't need explaining. The cosmos is. End of story. God doesn't add anything to the tale, because unless God also is viewed as a simple "is" (always has been, always will be), there's a need to ask what created God.

Science and religion both end up staring at the unfathomable blank wall of the mystery, is. However, most religions unnecessarily multiply the mystery with an imagined unseen God who is believed to have existed prior to the creation of the cosmos.

As Krauss describes in his book, modern science has learned enough about how "nothing" behaves to know that it's entirely possible for entire universes to emerge from nothing.

Sure, this isn't the "nothing" of religion. But nothing is that "nothing." Meaning, no religion starts with absolute nothing with lacks the capacity for "something." The Christian God supposedly created the universe out of nothing, but this isn't true. Isn't God considered to be something?

So cosmology indeed is rendering God increasingly irrelevant. Once there is the bare something of "nothing" (basically, the laws of quantum mechanics, to my understanding), universes bubble up into being without any other creative force.

As to the mystery of is-ness, let it be (another wise bit of advice from the Beatles). Krauss says:

The response to why there is something rather than nothing becomes almost trite: there is something simply because if there were nothing, we wouldn't find ourselves living there!

Easier Ways to overcome Stress

Posted: 22 Feb 2012 11:00 PM PST

Article by Ananda Spa

As the economic downturn continues and the light at the end of the tunnel still seems a long way off, stress levels are climbing across the board due to the strain on resources, increased workloads with tight deadlines, and constantly being under threat of performance leading to job insecurity. And to bust the myth, stress is not just a momentary feeling of tension. It has a long lasting impact on health - fatigue, lack of interest and motivation, feeling depressed, headaches, loss of sleep and muscular tension.

Ask almost anyone who has been able to come out of this stressful state and you will be astonished at the similarities in how they all approached it. A majority will confess that they focused on taking time out for themselves, reached out to professionals for discipline and support, and created a healthy mind and body balance.

Ask Colin Hall, Corporate Head of Spa Operations at Ananda about his magic recipe for relieving stress and its apparent why this works so well "From the very first step towards Ananda, stress levels start to fall away - you don't stress about what to pack or whether you will look your best as you do on any other normal break...all our guests get into the pristine white hand woven signature Ananda kurta pyjamas and this becomes standard wear throughout their stay.", says Colin. "The first treatment at the spa is the next moment of truth. The very act of surrendering to the professional touch of the holistic therapists sheds stress levels. Physical touch, which we tend to lose out on in our daily city lives, instantly relieves tension and blood pressure."

Colin then goes on to elaborate exactly how the whole process works - "Our stress management treatments use a choice of grounding, detoxifying and invigorating products. Grounding, which is the ultimate in stress reduction, uses a combination of pure essential oils of Sandalwood - which nourishes mind, body and soul, Rose - which balances, and Vetiver (khus - India's indigenous Oil of Tranquility! ) which cools and grounds, to create the signature Ananda solution. Hydrotherapy treatment which uses high pressure jets of warm water infused with essential oils of Vetiver and Lemon is extremely effective in grounding and cleansing the system. Creating the right cuisine is also important. In consultation with the Chefs, a diet low in fatty foods is created as these require more energy to burn. Drinking plenty of water and eating five portions of fruit and vegetables per day helps hydrate the body as well as remove toxins"

An increasing number of corporates are starting to realize that there's a direct economic angle to all of this, as chronic stress without treatment, will almost certainly lead to more absenteeism and a downturn in productivity. Says Mark Sands, Spa Manager at Ananda "A large percentage of our guests who sign on for Stress Management, Detox, or Rejuvenation programmes are business leaders or senior managers who have decided that they need to make this effort in order to contribute better both at work and at home. Many write back to mention how the experience made a really positive impact and how they view it as a necessary part of their lifestyle going forward"

The Newbie's Information To Meditation Workouts

Posted: 22 Feb 2012 09:00 PM PST

Article by Hugh Jackson

Is the day by day stress or the everlasting issues you will have at work or at house getting to you, affecting your life, well being and happiness? Then it is about time to consider some meditation exercises. Listed here are the basic issues you'll want to know!

Why Should I Take into account Meditation Workouts?

You're in all probability asking your self whether or not meditation exercises actually work and whether their benefits are really substantial. The answer is straightforward: yes. Meditating presents a variety of advantages, from a better health, a better mood and a greater sleep to more power, vitality and focus, much less stress, less frustration and less worries. It sounds appealing, proper? So, in case you have got been feeling anxious, depressed or weak currently, in case you might be having sleep and focus issues or in the event you merely want to achieve those fascinating emotions of effectively-being, calmness and happiness, it is best to start considering meditation exercises.

What Do I Need in Order to Start Meditation Exercises?

In case you determined that you should give meditating an attempt, then the very first thing you need is determination. It is not like meditation workouts require sure instruments or difficult strategies - basically, you just want is willpower and want, as a way to profit from meditation. And, in fact, you need a little bit of time to allocate to your meditation classes - 15, 20 minutes each other day is ideal. But there's one rule, when desirous about starting to meditate. And that rule is that... there is no successful meditation without leisure, a whole rest of the body and mind.

How Can I Chill out?

We already established that it is advisable loosen up so as to meditate. But is that this easy? For a beginner, it may be quite difficult. Most inexperienced persons in relaxation and meditation exercises find themselves serious about day by day issues and worries when attempting to meditate, as an alternative of clea! ring the ir minds and having fun with the state of calmness. Or others get bored when attempting to empty their minds. For sure, these can not be called "successful meditation periods". Nonetheless, even when this happens to you, it's best to know that you will undoubtedly be higher with time and enjoy meditation utterly, in case you are decided to make it work.

But let's begin from the beginning. With a purpose to benefit from an entire rest, you have to begin your meditation techniques on the proper time. Youngsters working through the house, a loud TV, a noisy neighbor might not be the right premises to start to meditate. You need peace, quietness, an excellent environment, a comfy decor or a welcoming pure ambient. After you find a peaceful moment, attempt to let your body calm down, to push the strain down and loosen your muscles. Really feel how your entire body feels higher - this may show you how to clear your mind later on.

Are there Different Types of Meditation Exercises?

There is a nice range of meditation exercises, little question about that. What you should do, as a beginner, is to attempt them all and find the one that fits you best. But that are these several types of exercises? You can choose from visualization exercises (when you are picturing constructive, lovely elements, places or moments), concentration exercises (if you end up attempting to focus in your body's sensations and stimulants) respiratory workouts (that are used in all forms of meditation, as an important premise) and many more, including specific meditation workout routines that regard a greater sleep, higher urge for food, much less stress and different problems that have to be eradicated out of your each day life.

Keep in mind that if you want to good outcomes, it's worthwhile to proceed together with your meditation exercises and try to enhance your self on everlasting foundation - only like this you'll achieve that positive, properly-being feeling that you're wanting for. Good luck!

New Breast Cancer Gene Found

Scientists have identified a new gene that may increase the risk of breast cancer, according to a new study from Finland.

In the study, mutations in this gene, called Abraxas, were linked to cases of hereditary breast cancer.

Researchers have now identified more than 10 genes that increase breast cancer risk; perhaps the most well-known of these are the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. But only about 20 percent of women with a family history of breast cancer have mutations in BRAC1 or BRAC2 — meaning in many cases, it's likely other genes are at work.

The mutation does not appear to be common — it was found in 2.4 percent of families with a history of breast cancer. But importantly, the mutation was not found in anyone without breast cancer in the study.

Because the study was conducted in Finland, future studies will need to investigatehow common the mutation is in other countries, said study researcher Roger Greenberg, an associate professor of cancer biology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

In the future, women with a family history of breast cancer might be tested for the Abraxas mutation, Greenbergsaid.

Greenberg and colleagues found the Abraxas mutation in three of 125 breast cancer patients from families with a history of the condition. This gene had been suspected to play a role in breast cancer risk because it interacts with BRCA1.

When the researchers looked at an additional 991 breast cancer patients, they found the Abraxas mutation in one woman, who also turned out to have breast cancer in her family. None of the 868 healthy patients in the study had the Abraxas mutation.

The mutated Abraxas gene prevents cells from fixing damaged DNA, increasing the risk that a cell will become cancerous. The gene may increase the risk of other cancers as well. Indeed, one patient in the study was diagnosed with both breast and endometrial cancer, and some patients with the Abraxas mutation had family members with lung cancer, lip cancer and lymphoma.

More research is needed to know exactly how much of an increase in breast cancer risk the Abraxas mutation brings. But Greenberg noted women in the study with this mutation were diagnosed around the same age as those with BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations — in their mid-40s.

Women with a mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2 are about five times more likely to develop breast cancer in their lifetimes compared with women who do not have this mutation, according to the National Cancer Institute.

"Identifying more of these mutations will make it easier for patients to know their risk of developing breast cancer," said Dr. Kristin Byrne, chief of breast imaging at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, who was not involved in the study. Such genetic information may even help doctors better diagnose breast cancer. Most patients with the Abraxas mutation in the study had a type of breast cancer called lobular carcinoma, which is harder to detect on a mammogram. Knowing that a patient has this mutation might mean doctors use additional screening methods, such as MRI, Byrne said.

The study is published today (Feb. 22) in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

Pass it on: Some cases of hereditary breast cancer may be caused, in part, by mutations in a gene called Abraxas.
