I snapped this on my iPhone yesterday at Seattle's Asian Art Museum. The pose and style of the statue look Greco-Roman because they are. It's a Gandharan statue of the Buddha before his enlightenment. Gandhara, now in Pakistan, was in the Classical Greek sphere of interest, and it's where the first Buddha images were made.

Face Lift Pointers to Keep in Mind

Posted: 06 May 2012 09:00 AM PDT

Article by Ace Abbey

Elective cosmetic surgery is becoming more popular across the country and around the world. Among the most popular procedures, anti-aging and corrective treatments such as face lift surgery continue to grow in popularity. As we search for the eternal fountain of youth, we are constantly plagued by detrimental effects of natural phenomenon such as gravity and loss of skin elasticity as we get older

Because of this, many people find that surgical options are the only way to get the long-term and dramatic results that they desire. When you look back on your decision to have the surgery, you should be pleased with the results. Here are a few things you should think of before entering the operating theater.

1. Find the right doctor: It makes all the difference in the world to trust your face lift surgery to a plastic surgeon that specializes in this type of procedure. Just as you wouldn't hire an electrician to do a plumber's job, so will you be happier with the immediate and long term results if you ensure that your doctor does this particular procedure a lot.

2. Ask questions: The doctor-patient relationship is a two-way street and you should feel comfortable enough to ask questions and raise concerns about the procedure and recovery period. Your doctor should be able to address your concerns and answer your questions in order to ensure the risks are reduced and side effects minimized. Be sure to also ask for before and after photos as well as specific details such as how long the scars are expected to last.

3. Narrow down the type: Just as selection with new cars, there is a wide variety of ways to create a new face. There are a number of different types of face lift and they all vary in length, invasiveness, recovery time, and overall effect. In general, the more invasive the surgery, the longer the recovery time and the more dramatic the effect. There are simpler options available to those that do not want long recovery periods or would prefer a cheaper and less risky rou! te.

4. Arrange for home recovery help: It is always a good idea and highly recommended to have a friend or family member around during your first few days of recovery. You will have strict post operative instructions from your surgeon that will recommend you stay in bed and relax for at least a few days.

Keep all of these items in mind and you will be happy with the results of your face lift for years to come.

Posted: 06 May 2012 08:00 AM PDT

Article by Stephen Bailey

The Specialized Ariel bikes are intended quite definitely for those women who fancy a more mountain-bike design to one aimed more towards performance on the road. Featuring front suspension forks and wider tyres, these bikes will be loved by those riders who like nothing more than time spent out along the byways. All the same, the Ariel is just as useful at taking you quickly and painlessly to the office or college, as many owners have testified. The state of many modern roads will be no trouble, as the shock absorbing capability of the Ariel will manage effortlessly. All the bikes in the series are designed onto the same A1 Premium alloy frame. The swan-neck shape of the top tube is particularly distinctive. Specialized are obviously concious of practical matters, as the frame will accept racks and mudguards. There's also a fitting for a kickstand.Suspension forks also figure on all the versions. Selected from the Suntour collection, they feature rising sophistication as you move up the series. The two top models, the Sport Disc and Comp Disc have lockout forks to enhance their rideability on the tarmac.Disc brakes appear on the three higher versions, the basic Ariel having V-brakes. The top of the series Comp Disc's sytem is actually hydraulic. Hydraulics frequently make it much easier to apply the superior braking force of a disc system. Disc brakes benefit from keeping their braking surfaces away from the grit and puddles, enhancing performance and keeping down damage.Triple chainrings on all models result in a superb choice of gear ratios - handy for mountainous terrain. The number of gears goes up from 21, through 24 to 27 on the top model. The 700mm wheels ensure effective running on the tarmac. This is helped by the 45mm semi-slick tyres which possess sufficient tread on the side for grip on loose surfaces, but smoother faces for reduced rolling resistance.Riser handlebars make for a very relaxed riding posture, comfort further enhanced by the women specific Riva MTB saddle. So within the Spe! cialized Ariel range there's quite a selection. They all have the same design strategy - performance bikes that will suit the commuter, but simultaneously capable of doing rather more off road work than the normal. The basic Ariel has a great deal going for it. But for those with the resources, the more luxurious models have a lot to offer. At the top of the range, the Comp Disc model is among the best you can buy.

The Best Meditation Chairs At The Lowest Prices Available

Posted: 06 May 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Article by Cristina Pierce

First, let's understand what meditation is and how it is defined. Meditation is a mental discipline by which one attempts to get beyond the "thinking" mind into a deeper state of relaxation and awareness. Meditation often involves turning attention to a single point of reference. Different meditative disciplines encompass a wide range of spiritual and/or psychophysical practices which may emphasize different goals -- from achievement of a higher state of consciousness, to greater focus, creativity or self-awareness, or simply a more relaxed and peaceful frame of mind. (From Wikipedia)

Now with clear understanding of the need to be relaxed in order to meditate properly, it is important to be able to get your body into that state by sitting comfortably. Creating that unique and special place of ease has never been simpler with the use of meditation chairs and furniture. Here is where I can help you find the perfect piece that will not only get you to that state of relaxation quickly, but will look beautiful in your home.

First, there is the SEAGRASS MEDITATION CHAIR. Designed by a long time practitioner of meditation the Seagrass Meditation Chair was inspired by a need to sit comfortably in a contemplative manner. While sitting closer to the ground provides an unmatched sense of grounding the contemporary westerner often needs something more supportive than just a pillow on the floor.

By lifting the hips a comfortable distance from the floor this low profile chair allows the legs and feet to rest more naturally either on the floor or pulled up on the cushion in the traditional style of the East. In addition the sturdy back rest and pillow provide just the support needed making the Seagrass Meditation Chair the perfect platform for a peaceful sitting experience.

The Seagrass Chair is woven by Indonesian craftsmen from renewable seagrass over a sturdy mango wood frame and was designed to be both a stylish and ecological addition to your home. Also includes washable cotton cush! ion cove rs for practicality as children love these chairs too. The perfect choice for those looking for simplicity and harmony.

The next option is the beautiful RAJA MEDITATION CHAIR. The newly arrived Raja Meditation Chair is the latest in a line of finely crafted meditation furniture for the home or studio. The name "Raja" comes from the Sanskrit word for "royalty" and sitting in this chair will definitely help bring out your inner King or Queen.

The Raja Chair is also made from sustainable materials including a seat and back of woven banana leaf and a solid mango wood frame. In addition this piece features carved legs and decorative flower on the seat as well as coconut wood accents on the back. It also has shorter style arms to help support the arms while still allowing the legs to be crossed if desired.

As always, only water base finishes are used to protect the wood and minimize strain on your health and the environment. Cushions are made of natural kapok stuffing with removable cotton covers for washing. Unlike anything else we think you will find the Raja Chair to be a unique piece for either meditation or simply creating alternative seating arrangements in your home or studio.

The third option is the ECOPOD MEDITATION CHAIR. It's redesigned and has been modified from its predecessor for increased comfort and support while retaining its lovely curved shape. Constructed now from the same durable seagrass weave as the other meditation furniture the Ecopod now has a slanted forward seat to aid in proper spinal alignment while sitting. Lightweight and sustainable materials make the Ecopod an attractive and unique piece to show in your home while providing a perfect platform for supported meditation. Now available in 2 waterbase finishes (Natural & Espresso) with 2 different colored washable cushion covers (Cream & Mocha).

And the last chair that would be a good buy for you is the RATTAN LOTUS MEDITATION CHAIR. This amazing chair is made from 100% natural rattan over a ba! mboo fra me. This unique piece of furniture was handcrafted by the finest artisans in Asia, taking several days to create. It is a beautiful addition to any space in your yoga studio, home, office or spa. The dimensions are approximately 20" high, 34" wide and 28" deep so it doesn't dominate or impose upon your quiet meditation space. You will feel more peaceful as soon as you sit down in this chair.

The design of this meditation chair is made to reflect the way we look when sitting in lotus during your yoga or meditation practice. Additionally, the design enables you to sit comfortably in an upright position with back support into the upper thoracic spine (depending on your height). You will feel your hips relaxing after about 5 minutes in the chair. The unique design of this meditation chair also promotes correct positioning of the body which helps to establish more effective breathing patterns, which is a tremendous health benefit for all of us. It also provides us with an opportunity to achieve deeper levels of meditation. This style of meditation chair is often selected by gurus and for those who meditate a great deal. Also comes with cushion and weighs 22lbs.

All 4 of these beautiful chairs are available to you. The Chair links are below. I have done my research and this webstore offers these chairs at the lowest price available because they offer free shipping, so the price you see, is the price you pay, while others are charging an additional charge to get it to you. $1.00 Will Start Our New Evolution of the Mind

Posted: 06 May 2012 04:01 AM PDT

Mindfulness
by RubyJi

Article by Matthew Lacoursiere

Ask yourself if it is okay to ask yourself questions. Have you ever had an idea about an idea? Do you ever think about thinking? These may seem to be strange questions and notions, but consider that rarely the relationship of the mind unto itself is ever spoken of. It is a concept so obvious and in plain sight of the mind, that it needs to take a step back from itself to recognize its own power.

This may seem confusing, but it is actually quite simple to explain. As human beings we are equipped with a physical body, a brain which serves as a processing lab and storage unit for information, and a non-physical entity that controls everything above, the mind. The mind is where everything we do comes from. We start with an idea from the mind, it is then processed through the brain and executed with precision through our body into physical actions.

The human mind cannot function on one constant level, so it splits apart to serve itself efficiently. If a mind cannot serve itself first and foremost, then it would not function and the person it serves would cease to exist. The mind must operate in three different performances simultaneously to generate maximum results, otherwise thought of as pleasing one self. The levels on which the mind operates are conscious, subconscious and preconscious. Without one, the others would most certainly fail to evolve.

I have had a vision in my own mind leading me to monumental ideas, similar to ones that I've had before but didn't stay. Now that I have allowed my mind to observe itself, it has made everything seem possible. I have decided to run with my idea, which is to finish writing a book about the idea to write a book, publish it and give it away to as many people as humanly possible, for free, with no expectations, and absolutely no need for recognition. My mind could ONLY construct a solid idea if the ingredients included selflessness. This has become the structure of my new life, helping people without certain cause and asking for nothing in r! eturn. I nevitably this will bring peace with a definite calmness inside, which is exactly what the human mind requires to carry on.

Why in the world would someone do this? That is a simple answer for me, and the easiest part of this whole project. Unlocking your mind leaves you with a feeling of renewal, and in some way it seeks to change the minds of others to evolve as we were meant to. There is a reason we only use 10 percent of our brain capacity, because that is what we allow our minds to access. There is a way to change the world and help develop the minds in it, starting with an idea like this one. If everyone contributed one dollar to launch a project this important, it would be done with great ease and serve a higher purpose.

The Multimillionaire Mindset vs The "Normal Mind"

Posted: 06 May 2012 01:00 AM PDT

Article by Warren Little

A man observes evergreens growing along the roadside and thinks that they look pretty, covered with snow. Another man sees the same trees and thinks, "These trees would look good in people's living rooms at Christmas. I wonder what they would pay for them?"

The first man has an ordinary mind. The second, the mind of a natural-born moneymaker.

In The Prime Movers, Edwin A. Locke provides some interesting insights into the way moneymakers think:

He argues that an active, inquisitive mind is a hallmark of the successful entrepreneur. The most successful entrepreneurs in history, he says, had this sort of mind.

* Thomas Edison: He was a "virtual thinking machine. Almost until the day he died, his mind poured forth a torrent of ideas, and he might track as many as 60 experiments at a time in his laboratory."

* Steve Jobs: He bombarded people with his ideas - his investors, his board of directors, his customers, his subordinates, and his CEO.

* Henry Ford: "He threw himself into every detail, insisting on getting small things absolutely right... But he never lost sight of the ultimate, overall objection. He had a vision of what his new car (the Model T) should look like. From all the improvisation, hard thought, and hard work came a machine that was at once the simplest and the most sophisticated automobile built to date anywhere in the world."

This is the first of several essays I'll be writing on this point: how to think like a multimillionaire (taken from the concepts I've learned from 2 multimillioinares that are my personal mentors).

And here's the goal: to help you discover exactly how they do what they do by figuring out how they think. If you study this and subsequent essays seriously - and implement the suggestions I'll be making - you may be able to "upgrade" your brain to one that will allow you to have the kind of life they enjoy.

To get started, here are some observations I've made from studying my two multimillionaire mentors and fr! om readi ng about great wealth builders like Jobs and Edison and Ford.

1. A "normal" person is concerned with protecting his ego. When dealing with a problem he doesn't really understand, he pretends he understands the contributing factors and doesn't try to find out what anyone else thinks. A person with a multimillionaire mind asks questions incessantly. He has no ego when it comes to learning. He knows that knowledge is power.

2. A "normal" person has a consumer mentality. He looks at a hot new product and thinks about how he would like to own one. A person with a multimillionaire mind has an entrepreneurial men-tality. He looks at it and thinks, "How can I produce this or something similar in my own industry?"

3. A "normal" person is wish-focused. He daydreams about making gobs of money. A person with a multimillionaire mind is reality-based. He is always analyzing his own success and the success of others and wondering how he could learn from it.

4. A "normal" person, when confronted with a challenging idea, thinks of all the reasons why it might not work. A person with a multimillionaire mind sees the potential in it and disregards the problems until he has a clear vision of how it might succeed.

5. A "normal" person resists change. A person with a multimillionaire mind embraces it.

6. A "normal" person accepts the status quo. A person with a multimillionaire mind is always looking to make things - even good things - better.

7. A "normal" person reacts. A person with a multimillionaire mind is proactive.

8. A "normal" person looks at a successful business owner and thinks, "That guy's lucky." Or "That guy's a shyster." A person with a multimillionaire mind thinks, "What's his secret?" And, "How can I do that?"

Most importantly, a person with a multimillionaire's mind likes living like a multimillionaire. He doesn't shortchange himself when it comes to comfort and luxury. Rather than believing always that pain leads to gain, he thinks, "If I'm smart I can! have my cake and eat it too.

You can start your mental transformation by studying this list and assessing your own impulses. Be honest. Identify the habits you don't have and try to develop them. Rather than think of this process as work, think of it as fun.

Beginners Yoga

Posted: 05 May 2012 10:00 PM PDT

Article by Lance Calhoun

A beginners yoga session usually follows the guidelines below:

Warm-up Exercises - these condition your body for the safe transition into asana practice. For beginners, you may just use these poses as your entire practice. Warm-up exercises open the shoulder muscles, the spine, the hips, the lower back, and the groin.

Standing Poses - these poses are mainly for alignment of the feet and the body. Open the hips, stretch the legs, add strength to your back and increas your range of movement. Standing poses help to facilitate digestion, blood circulation and are good for those who want to lose weight.

Sitting Poses - sitting poses allows you to infuse with the breath and prana, and to revitalize from a pose by giving you a calm and quiet feeling. These poses greatly contribute in shaping your buttocks and legs, and in adding vitality and suppleness to the spine.

Twists - twist exercises release the built-up tension in your spine, relieve backaches and make your shoulders more flexible. It also aids in the circulation of blood and nutrients through the body.

Supine and Prone Poses - these poses release tension in your abdomen and increase the mobility of your spine. They restore strength in your back, arms and legs, and release your hips and groin.

Inverted and Balance Poses - inverted and balance poses defy gravity and develop increased coordination, stamina and strength, as well as improve grace, agility and poise. They also improve your concentration and focus since being quiet is necessary to be able to do these poses.

Backbends - backbends are the poses that benefit the adrenal glands and the kidney. They release tension in the front body and in your shoulders and pelvic girdle, and improve the flexibility of your spine.

Finishing Poses - these are the cooling-down exercises for Yoga.

Yoga is designed to ease tension in muscles, while at the same time honing the strength in those muscles. Yoga also helps to improve the flexibility of the bod! y's join ts and ligaments. Each pose is performed slowly and with fluidity. There are hundreds of different postures in yoga, but yoga for beginners keeps things much more simplified. Anyone can practice yoga because the postures range from the basic to the complex. No matter what your age, fitness or skill level, yoga can provide an invigorating workout.

Yoga has many benefits from the preventative to the theraputic affecting both the physical and the mental states of the body. Practicing yoga one will see improved flexibility, increased strength and muscle tone, improved posture and easing of bodily pains such as back aches, knee pain and others. It has also been proven to improve heart conditions, boost immune response, decrease cholesterol and encourage weight loss.

Many people think that they need to be flexible or strong in order to begin practicing yoga. But beginners to yoga will be happy to find out that it can easily be scaled to your skill level and body type. Yoga will help you improve your flexibility and strength, so there is no need to have it from the beginning. What is yoga? It is an individual experience that I encourage you to try. Your body and your mind will thank you.

The real middle way

Posted: 05 May 2012 10:00 PM PDT

By no other means, except by dhyรขna (meditation), did the Buddha, after he gave up asceticism, attain enlightenment (bodha).  Other than by dhyรขna, whatever else the canon says (Pali) about the means to enlightenment the Buddha is more than likely using skillful means, knowing the difficulty of teaching the actual method of dhyรขna he used to attain enlightenment.

"Then, Aggivessana, I thought: I remember that once when my father, the Sakka, was working (in the fields), I was sitting in the cool shadow of a Jambu tree. Separated from objects which awaken desire, separated from harmful qualities I reached a (state of) joy and happiness (pรฎti-sukha) accompanied by contemplation and reflection which is the first jhรขna/dhyรขna (meditation) and remained in it for some time. Could this be, perhaps, the way (magga) to enlightenment (bodha)? After this memory, Aggivessana, I had this knowledge: this is the way to enlightenment. [Then], Aggivessana, I thought: why should I be afraid of this happiness that has nothing to do with objects which awaken desire and nothing to do with harmful qualities. [Then], Aggivessana, I thought: I am not afraid of this happiness that has nothing to do with objects which awaken desire and nothing to do with harmful qualities" (Mahasaccaka Sutta).

The real middle way Gautama discovered was dhyรขna. By it Gautama was fully able to realize true reality and become a Buddha.  Dhyรขna avoided the one extreme of trying to achieve happiness by the pursuit of physical pleasure, and the other extreme of ascetic self-mortification.

One notable method the Buddha taught using skillful means, considering the difficultly of dhyรขna, was the path of discriminating insight or prajรฑรข.  By this method the Buddha taught his followers how to distinguish between what is transitory and what is not; between what is not the self (S., anรขtman; P., anattรข), which is always suffering, and what is the self or attรข (Pali).  Tilmann Vetter sums it up nicely (brackets are mine).

"The introduction of the path of discriminating insight probably is connected with difficulties involved in practising the real dhyana and its preparations. Instead of this a simpler method was devised (very likely by the Buddha himself) and offered to most of the disciples, namely the method of judging the constituents [the Five Aggregates or skandhas] of the person as non-self [anattรข]. Moreover, this method was said to release one from desire (and therefore from rebirth) as soon as one has fully understood the fact that the constituents are not the self" (The Ideas and Meditative Practices of Early Buddhism, p. xxxv).

It needs underscoring that here is where the modern day confusion between self and no-self (anattรข/anรขtman) seems to have its beginning.  The path of prajรฑรข was skillful means by which the Buddha was able to wean his followers off the corporeal/skandhas, the corporeal being what is precisely not the self or anattรข.  In other words, the Buddha wanted his followers not to identify with the Five Aggregates which can never be the true self.  Regrettably, many Buddhists, to this day, don't have their thinking caps on who simply refuse to look at the data; who earnestly believe the Buddha rejected self or more precisely, an absolute which he discovered through dhyรขna, the real middle way.

Creating Your Own Mind Puzzles

Posted: 05 May 2012 09:00 PM PDT

Article by Talha Azeem

Creating your own mind puzzles is a rewarding experience. Not only can you explore your creative mind, you can use the mind to create puzzles you can enjoy. You can sit and laugh over the puzzles you create, which laughter promotes youth. Still, the rewards reach above laughter and youth. You will also reach the benefits of enjoying an active mind. Having an active mind will keep you ahead of life's, up, and down games.

Puzzles are fun, yet when you create your own, you have your own fingerprints in writing that you can share with your children, friends, family, and other people. In time, you may publish your own mind puzzle book by creating your own mind puzzles often.

To create your own mind puzzles, you can start with names, places, words, numbers, etc. Let's try it together.

Word puzzles:

Start building a block of words that comes to your mind. Write each word on paper. Example: penny - letter - romance - center - solution - mystery - Now, we can write a list of associating words - Fiscal - weak - alphabet - inspired - piece - discovery - trivia - undiscovered - state of mind -

Next, review your first word list. Find the word that associates with the first word in your list. Penny - think for a few minutes about what penny means to you. We could go with fiscal, since it involves money, or we could choose weak. Weak is an option, since a penny amounts to nothing these days. On the other hand, if you apply the rule - "A penny saved is a penny earned," you might associate the penny with fiscal. Next, consider letter. Letter could associate with writer or alphabet. It doesn't matter what you choose in this instance, yet you can elevate writing letters verses alphabets and probably draw your own conclusion.

Now think of romance. Romance, when you consider variant sides, romance could associate with undiscovered - mystery - inspired - state of mind, etc. In this case, we will associate romance with inspired, since to feel romance, you must feel inspir! ed to gu ide you to that state of mind. Now think about how romance can associate with mystery and undiscovered. Draw your own conclusions. My conclusion is that you have to explore your inner self, which is a mystery often to most of us to find our skills in romance.

Center is something to discover, since you have the center of the universe to consider, middle areas, and centerpieces that go on a table - thus center associates with pieces.

Solution is something we discover. Solution is obvious in this instance, since we must discover answers to our problems. Discovery - Solution are emulsions, which we use mixtures of answers with key points to discover ways of solving our problems.

Mystery is something we have to discover also. Mystery is secrecy, or trivia. Mystery is undiscovered, since we must explore the secrecy to find solutions to the thriller or unidentified answers.

Mystery is also inspired, since when we have mystery we often feel inspired to explore the foundation to find answers. The hidden messages beneath the surface often inspire one to explore the possibilities by offering suggestions.

This is what mind puzzles are - mysteries we must discover answers to solve the problem. Mystery then, is something undiscovered. Yet, what does mystery mean to you?

Mind puzzles include various styles of word puzzles. You also have choices of lateral puzzles, block puzzles, wooden puzzles, etc, as well as other types of mind puzzles.

To save money however, you can practice creating your own mind puzzles so that you can open your mind up deeper than you would relying on someone else doing the work for you.

Neuroscience says people aren't things. We're processes.

Posted: 05 May 2012 08:00 PM PDT

Who am I?

That's a big question. For the ancient Greeks, and many others, it's the biggest question. "Know yourself." An imperative.

Modern neuroscience is casting factual light on this philosophical issue. Well, not only philosophical. Religon, spirituality, mysticism -- they also have explanations of what essential human nature is.

Usually, dualistic.

Meaning, supposedly there's the human body, which includes the brain. Then there's a mysterious something else. Soul, mind, psyche, spirit, some thing which inhabits, connects with, or otherwise associates with the body while we're physically alive.

But since that thing isn't physical, usually it is believed to survive bodily death. Bingo! After our last breath we find ourselves in heaven, hell, paradise, a bardo, or a host of alternative supernatural hypotheses.

As I often say on this blog, maybe.

Personally, I'd rather keep on surviving as something. Turning into nothing (nothing conscious, at least) after death isn't wildly appealing to me, to put it mildly. However, as noted in a previous post, Who am I? has the same presupposition as Do I have free will?

An "I."

If there's no me, no thing which could become nothing, no thing which has a will (free or otherwise), then two gigantic Big Questions of Life shrink away into meaninglessness, in much the same way as Unicorn Behavioral Studies isn't a great field of study for a factually-inclined biologist.

These days I devour neuroscience books with the same zeal I used to read books about spirituality, mysticism, and esoteric philosophy.

My current meal has been Michael Gazzaniga's "Who's in Charge? Free will and the science of the brain." It follows along in the familiar current of other neuroscience books, but Gazzaniga has a fresh and appealing way of conveying what has been learned about human nature.

Basically...

There's no evidence of the dualism so beloved by religions and mystics. No sign of the soul or any other form of consciousness separate from the brain. Nor is there a central controller, a top dog, a CEO, a boss, within the physical brain.

What scientists find there are processes, not things.

Yes, we humans feel like someone ("me") is in control, but this is an illusion caused by left-brain processes devoted to creating narratives about why things happen and what's going on in the world. Which often are wrong. Hey, that jerk at the end of the bar is laughing, at me! Asshole.

Gazzaniga writes:

A complex system is composed of many different systems that interact and produce emergent properties that are greater than the sum of their parts and cannot be reduced to the properties of the constituent parts.

...Relevant to our current question about feeling unified and in control is an important point that Northwestern University's physicist Luis Amaral and chemical engineer Julio Ottino make: "The common characteristic of all complex systems is that they display organization without any external organizing principle being applied." That means no head honcho, no homunculus.

In his final chapter, Gazzaniga shares what John Doyle, a Cal Tech engineer, said to him:

Somehow we got used to the idea that when a system appears to exhibit coherent, integrated function and behavior, there must be some "essential" and, importantly, central or centralized controlling element that is responsible. We are deeply essentialist, and our left brain will find it.

And as you point out, we'll make up something if we can't find it. We call it a homunculus, mind, soul, gene, etc... But it is rarely there in the usual reductionist sense... That doesn't mean there isn't in fact some "essence" that is responsible, it's just distributed.

It's in the protocols, the rules, the algorithms, the software. It's how cells, ant hills, Internets, armies, brains, really work.

It's difficult for us because it doesn't reside in some box somewhere, indeed it would be a design flaw if it did because that box would be a single point of failure. It's, in fact, important that it not be in the modules but in the rules that they must obey.

Love it.

There's more "spiritual" wisdom in this scientist's words than in the stacks of religious'y books I've read in my lifetime. It isn't different from what the wisest of sages have always said. Doyle just has solid reasons for his statements above.

Gazzaniga recognizes that we lack the proper framework for understanding who we humans really are. We're used to dealing with things, so we view ourselves as a thing that deals with other things. In a limited sense this is true, but mostly it is false.

What we are is... there's no is. At least, not in the way we usually think of things that are.

We are people, not brains. We are that abstraction that occurs when a mind, which emerges from a brain, interacts with that brain. It is in that abstraction that we exist and in the face of science seeming to chip away at it, we are desperately seeking a vocabulary to describe what it is we truly are.

...While reviewing material for this book, I realized that a unique language, which has yet to be developed, is needed to capture the thing that happens when mental processes constrain the brain and vice versa.

The action is at the interface of those layers.

In one kind of vocabulary it is where downward causation meets upward causation. In another vocabulary it is not there at all but in the space between brains that are interacting with each other. It is what happens at the interface of our layered hierarchical existence that holds the answer to our quest for understanding mind/brain realationships.

Those words probably don't make complete, or even much, sense to you. If so, I share your feeling. Even Gazzaniga, I suspect, doesn't fully understand what he wrote in the passages I just quoted.

The brain still is largely a mystery. So are we humans. We're trying to comprehend what we are through the only tool we have: what we are.

Confusion is to be expected. Welcomed, even. I liked this quote on the next to last page.

No one knows more about the weaknesses in one's idea than the person proposing it, and as a consequence, one is always on the lookout.

This is not a particularly easy state to be in, and I once asked Leon Festinger, one of the smartest men in the world, whether or not he ever felt inept. He replied, "Of course! That is what keeps you ept."

Unleashing the Full Potentials of Your Mind

Posted: 05 May 2012 07:00 PM PDT

Article by Andre Thune

There is something essential in man in which it is what it sets him apart from other creatures and creations in this world - the human mind. This is what makes him behave properly, speak sensibly, act due to a certain cause, and stay surviving despite many obstacles and problems he faces in life. Powerful, isn't it? The power of the human mind is so strong that it makes man possess an ability to mold his personality, create his future, build his destiny, and turn his dreams into reality - a power so real and even greater, better, and more efficient than all other supernatural powers only created by the imagination.

The human mind does all these things, or should I say power, because of its unique characteristics and nature. It is comparable to a mirror in the sense that it is open and vast, reflects in full and precise details, unbiased towards any impression, distinguishes clearly, and is a potential for having everything already accomplished. These mind features help man generate 2 kinds of thoughts: positive and negative. Positive thoughts are healthy, constructive, and good ideas, while negative thoughts are the exact opposite - unhealthy, destructive, and bad ideas being produced by the mind. The mind produces all sorts of things that can be classified into either positive or negative thoughts to the point where there exists a clash between them. They fight against each other to win over the individual's decision to which these thoughts would be taken into action.

Choosing what kinds of thought to be acted upon depends on the individual's way of thinking. Positive thinking is the manner of looking at the good and bright things in life. Thus, if he is optimistic, he only entertains positive thoughts, making them succeed over the negative ones.

On the other hand, negative thinking is the way of viewing life's worries, doubts, and fears. Thus, if he is pessimistic, he ignores positive thoughts and minds only the negative ones which are those that won in the clash.

This! is also where the power of the mind starts manifesting. Positive thinking creates positive reality in such a way that it molds one's personality in good shape, makes his future clear, builds his destiny with directions, and turns his sweet dreams into reality. Negative thinking just the same has its power. Only, it creates negative reality - still the exact opposite of positive thinking. It molds one's personality with defects, makes his future vague, builds his destiny without directions, and turns his nightmares into reality. This is how powerful the mind can be? It's now up to us what reality we want to face; thus, what kind of thinking should we possess?

Obviously, the positive kind of thinking is what's more preferable between the two. It will lead us in the right way in establishing a better life. Unfortunately, not all of us are optimistic. In fact, there are a lot of people who lives by the thought "I can't." Luckily, negative thinking is not a hopeless case. As spontaneous as our minds can be, we can still train them to ignore negative thoughts and focus only with the positive ones. These ways include starting the day with cheers and smiles, asking for guidance, planning the day ahead, being detached from the outcome, balancing one's desires, and a lot more. Making these tips a regular habit will cause one to realize that looking at the bright side of life is not at all difficult. It is easy plus it creates great outcomes.

Thinking positively is only the first half of mind power. The other half is turning the positive thoughts into actions. And this is where will power comes in - the one responsible for making things happen. It's like the voice inside our system that makes us do things in order for our thoughts to become real. Mind and will power is not at all distinct from one other. When one thinks with the mind, the body immediately does actions willingly to attain whatever it is in the mind.

Some common situations that individual finds difficult to face include personality polish! ing, mak ing many friends, finding true love, reaching goals in life, and eventually, being recognized by the society. In the event that he thinks he does not perform well in such situations, he already concludes, "I can't" without even trying. Therefore, he really will not. Where, in fact, if he just made the right programming in his mind that he can actually do it, then he will.

See, how powerful the mind is? You do not need to be a Superman or any of the X-men, or simply a superhero to possess a power because you already have a power. All it takes is the right way of thinking, plus the proper attitude, to become a superhero in your own ways. And what is the right way of thinking? It's simple. It's "I can. Therefore, I will."

Why We Eat for Pleasure

Posted: 05 May 2012 06:00 PM PDT

Even if a meal leaves you feeling full, somehow you find room for dessert. A new study may explain why we engage in such "pleasure eating," after we've obtained enough calories for our body's energy needs.

The results show that when we eat for pleasure, the body releases chemicals that trigger a feeling of reward, and this may lead to overeating, the researchers said.

"Understanding the physiological mechanisms underlying this eating behavior may shed some light on the obesity epidemic," said study researcher Dr. Palmiero Monteleone, of the University of Naples SUN in Italy.

In the study, the researchers looked at eight healthy adults, ages 21 to 33, who were satiated. Participants were given their favorite food, and later, a less-palatable food of equal caloric and nutritional value.

The researchers periodically measured levels of two chemicals involved in the body's reward system: 2-arachidonoylglycerlo (2-AG) and ghrelin.

The found that the blood levels of these chemicals increased when participants ate their favorite foods, but not when they ate the less palatable foods.

This increase suggests that the body's reward system overrides the body's signal that enough has been eaten to restore energy, the researchers said.

It also may explain why, when we eat for pleasure, we're more likely to opt for a piece of cake than a serving of broccoli.

Eating for pleasure "may powerfully stimulate overeating in an environment where highly palatable foods are omnipresent, and contribute to the surge in obesity," Monteleone said.

The study has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

Hatha Yoga

Yoga Gym Belgrade Center / Fitness Club

Hatha Yoga is the term used for the physical branch of yoga that leads one to the fruits of the practise, namely Raja Yoga. The word Hatha is a construct of the words "ha" (meaning sun/masculine energy) and "tha" (moon/feminine principal), both of which inhabit ones body. "When the light of the sun and moon comes into contact with objects, shadows are created" *

Hence, the result of Shadow yoga (Chaya Yoga) is the dissolution of these shadows, or obstructions. Thus, Shadow Yoga is purely a synonym of Hatha Yoga. It was developed by Zhander (Shandor) Remete after many decades of dedicated research and experience, not only in the field of non-commercial Hatha Yoga but also in the ancient martial arts and traditional Indian dance. This system promotes an understanding of the primary principles of movement through the application of marmas! thana (t he vital energetic points in the body), the system of pranic winds known as vayus and the nadi, or the subtle "corridors" the vayu traverses. If a student has a wilful desire to do the seemingly more elaborate aspects of a practise, without first being grounded in the foundations of the system one is learning, it exposes them to potential cycles of injury, confusion and the prospect of one day having to back track and undo.

Hatha Yoga, as with any discipline, cannot and should not be rushed. Therefore, the Shadow System of Hatha Yoga utilises the preparation work found in the traditional martial, dance and yoga disciplines. It uses simple joint work (calanas) to release excess stiffness and first engage ones attention on the natural, inherent movements of the body. The student is then gradually taught one of three preludes.

These sequences each develop slightly different aspects of the practise and within these preludes lays the ground work for the appropriate asana, suited to the individual. Uddiyana bandha (abdominal "conditioning") is used to stimulate the inner "fire" or agni, tone the organic structure and develop a clearer sense of centre.

What I’ve Learned About Learning

Posted: 05 May 2012 05:00 PM PDT

'We learn more by looking for the answer to a question and not finding it than we do from learning the answer itself.' ~Lloyd Alexander

Post written by Leo Babauta.

I am a teacher and an avid learner, and I'm passionate about both.

I'm a teacher because I help Eva homeschool our kids — OK, she does most of the work, but I do help, mostly with math but with everything else too. I also teach habits, writing/blogging, simplicity and other fun topics in online courses.

I'm a lifelong learner and am always obsessively studying something, whether that's breadmaking or language or wine or chess or writing or fitness.

Here's are two key lessons — both really the same lesson — I've learned about learning, in all my years of study and in trying to teach people:

  1. Almost everything I've learned, I didn't learn in school; and
  2. Almost everything my students (and kids) have learned, they learned on their own.

Those two lessons (or one lesson) have a number of reasons and implications for learning. Let's take a look at some of them, in hopes you might find them useful.

Why Learning is Independent

One of the foundations of Unschooling, which Eva and I and the kids do here at home, is that you're not teaching subjects to your kids — in fact, you're not really teaching them at all. They take responsibility for their learning, and do it because they're interested in something, not because you tell them they should learn it.

This is exactly how I learn as an adult, and so I know it works.

When teachers (wonderful people that they were) tried to teach me something in school, I often became bored, and just did what I needed to do to do well on the test. Not because the subject or the teacher was boring, but because it wasn't something I cared about. They wanted me to learn it because they thought I should, but that's not why people learn something. They learn it because they care about it — because they find it incredibly interesting, or because they need it to do something they really want to do.

When teachers succeeded in getting me to learn, it was only because they made something seem so interesting that I started to care about it. But then I learned on my own, either in class while ignoring everyone else, or more likely after class in the library or at home.

That's because someone walking you through the steps of learning something doesn't work — you aren't learning when you're just listening to someone tell you how something works. You're learning when you try to do that something — putting it into action. That's when the real learning begins and the superficial learning ends — when you try something and fail, and adjust and try again, and solve countless little problems as you do so.

The best teachers know this, and so they inspire, and help you to put the learning into action.

As an adult, I've learned a lot on my own. The stuff I've just read, I've mostly forgotten. But the stuff I've put into action by playing with it, by practicing, by creating and sharing with others — that stuff has stuck with me. I truly learned it.

I learned about blogging when I started blogging, and kept doing it for five years — not by reading blogs about blogging. My students have learned habits and decluttering and meditation and blogging from me not because I told them something brilliants, but because the ones who really learned put it into action. They formed a simple habit, decluttered their homes, did 5 minutes of meditation for 30 days, blogged.

This is where the real learning happens — when the fingers start moving, the feet start dancing, not when you hear or read something.

How to Learn (or Teach)

The teacher's job, really, is to fascinate the student. Fascination is the key to learning. Then help the student put the fascination into action.

It follows then, that if you're teaching yourself, your job is exactly the same.

Here's how to learn:

  1. Get fascinated. As a teacher, you should fascinate the student by rediscovering with her all the things that originally fascinated you about the topic. If you can't get fascinated, you won't care enough to really learn something. You'll just go through the motions. How do you get fascinated? Often doing something with or for other people helps to motivate me to look more deeply into something, and reading about other people who have been successful/legendary at it also fascinates me.
  2. Pour yourself into it. I will read every website and book I can get my hands on. Google and the library are my first stops. They're free. The used bookstore will be next. There are always an amazing amount of online resources to learn anything. If there isn't, create one.
  3. Do it, in small steps. Actually doing whatever you want to do will be scary. You can learn as much Spanish vocabulary as you like, but until you start having conversations, you won't really know it. You can read as much about chess as you like, but you have to put the problems into action, and play games. You can read about how to program, but you won't know it until you actually code. Start with small, non-scary steps, with as little risk as possible, focusing on fun, easy skills.
  4. Play. Learning isn't work. It's fun. If you're learning because you think you should, not because you're having fun with it, you will not really stick with it for long, or you'll hate it and not care about it. So make it play. Make games out of it. Sing and dance while you do it. Show off your new skills to people, with a smile on your face.
  5. Do it with others. I believe most learning is done on your own, but doing it with others makes it fun. I like to work out with my friends and with Eva. I like to bake bread for my family. I like to play chess with my kids. That motivates me to learn, because I want to do well when I do it with others.
  6. Feel free to move around. I will dive into something for a couple weeks, and then move on to something else. That's OK. That's how passion for a topic often works. Sometimes it will last for a long time, sometimes it's a short intense burst. You can't control it. Allow yourself to wander if that's where things lead you.
  7. But deep learning takes months or years. You can learn a lot about something in 2-4 weeks, but you really become an expert at something only after months and years of doing it. I knew a lot about blogging after 6 months, but I waited a couple years before I was comfortable teaching others about it. Even now, after 5+ years of blogging, I'm still learning. The same applies to habits — I've learned a lot after 7 years of successfully creating habits, and now can actually teach it with some confidence. So how do you allow yourself to wander, but stick with something for long enough to get deep learning? By wandering around within the topic. You can learn a lot about wine in a month, for example, but what if after that you focused on cabernet sauvignon for a month, then zinfandel, then pinot noir? What if then you decided to learn about Oregon pinot noirs, then Sonoma pinots, then (the wonderful) pinots from Burgundy? You'd be wandering around, but going deeper and deeper. You can also move away from a topic, then get fascinated with it again and come back to it.
  8. Test yourself. You can learn a lot of information quickly by studying something, testing yourself, studying again to fill in the holes in your knowledge, testing again, and repeating until you have it by heart. That's not always the most fun way to learn, but it can work well. Alternatively, you can learn by playing, and when you play, allow that to be your test.
  9. Disagree. Don't just agree that everything you're reading or hearing from others on a topic is correct, even if they are foremost experts. First, experts are often wrong, and it's not until they are challenged that new knowledge is found. Second, even if they are right and you are wrong by disagreeing, you learn by disagreeing. By disagreeing, you have already not only considered what you've been given, but formulated an alternative theory. Then you have to try to test to see which is right, and even if you find that the first information or theory was right and you were wrong, now you know that much better than if you just agreed. I'm not saying to disagree with everything, but the more you do, the better you'll learn. Don't disagree in a disagreeable way, and don't hold onto your theories too tightly and be defensive about them.
  10. Teach it. There is no better way to cement your knowledge than to teach it to others. It's OK if you don't really know it that well — as long as you're honest about that when you're teaching it to someone. For example, I'm a beginner at chess, but I will learn something about it and teach it to my kids — they know I'm not a tournament contender, let alone a master, and yet I'm still teaching them something they don't know. And when I do, I begin to really understand it, because to teach you have to take what you've absorbed, reflect upon it, find a way to organize it so that you can communicate it to someone else clearly enough for them to understand it, see their mistakes and help correct them, see where the holes in your knowledge are, and more.
  11. Learning can be subliminal. We think we're in control of our minds and we're like programmers telling our minds what to learn, how to learn, and what data to retain. No. Our minds work in mysterious ways, and cannot be tightly controlled. They wander, latch onto the weirdest things, and soak up more than we know. Later, you can come back to what you've absorbed, and test yourself, and find you knew something you didn't realize you knew. The lesson is to expose yourself to as much as possible on a topic, and allow yourself to absorb it. Sometimes your mind will pick up patterns you didn't consciously realize were there, but then can use those patterns later when you put the learning into action.
  12. Reflect on your learning by blogging. You soak up a ton of information and patterns, and you can put that into action, but when you sit down and reflect on what you've learned, and try to share that with others (as I'm doing right now), you force yourself to think deeply, to synthesize the knowledge and to organize it, much as you do when you teach it to others. Blogging is a great tool for reflection and sharing what you've learned, even if you don't hope to make a living at it. And it's free.

Ten tips for setting up a meditation practice

Posted: 05 May 2012 04:00 PM PDT

The benefits of meditation come with regular practice, and that means making it part of your life. That's one of the great challenges of learning meditation, so here are ten tips for establishing a meditation practice.

1. Get some instruction

You can learn the techniques of meditation from books and CDs: there are some good ones around (check out our shop). But it helps a lot to learn from a real person.Take a course – or go to a class where you can ask questions about the issues. In time, it helps to have friends or even teachers who are more experienced meditators than you are.

2. Settle on a practice that suits you

On an MBSR course there are three main practices – the mindfulness of breathing, the body scan and mindful movement, and there are many others out there. It's worth experimenting a bit and then settling on the practice, or combination of practices, that work for you.

3. Find a regular time for practice

You might start off thinking you'll just try fitting meditation into your day somehow or other, but establishing a practice means finding a time that works for you. For many people, first thing in the morning before the day starts up is a good time; others prefer the evening. There are pros and cons with either so you'll need to experiment.

4. Set up a meditation place

You can meditate anywhere, but if you sit down amid clutter it has an effect. So set aside a space that evokes the feeling of meditation. Some flowers, a candle or an image on a table can be enough to encourage the feeling that you're leaving aside the usual preoccupations. It also helps to set aside the cushions or chair that need for meditation, and it's worth thinking about getting some meditation cushions or a stool.

5. Talk to your family or housemates

To avoid people barging in or turning up the music just as you start to get settled, talk to the people you live with and let them know what you are doing. Don't worry if they thing you're weird: if they notice you're calmer and happier they'll soon change.

6. Meditate with others

It's hard to keep anything going on your own, at least to start with. We all need encouragement and guidance. Many people find a setting where they can meditate with others: Buddhist centres, sitting groups, follow on courses.

7. Go on retreat

Retreats are a chance to get away from all the things that usually fill up our lives. They vary in length: you can find day retreats or residential retreats for a weekend or longer. Just being quiet and meditating several times a day lets everything settle down so your experience can go deeper. On an intensive retreat you don't do much apart from meditate, but there are less demanding options as well.

8. Take your practice off the cushion

If you think of meditation as something that only happens in the formal practice time, it will be hard to maintain. So look for ways to keep the thread of mindfulness and meditation alive through the day. The Three Minute Breathing Space gives you time to stop and connect with mindfulness, and you can find many more, informal ways to do the same.

9. Reflect on your values

Most of us get enthusiastic, every so often, about a certain kind of exercise or studying a particular subject. But, looking back, we only maintain a few of these. They are the ones that touch on the values at the core of our lives. If you can make the connection between something that is a deep-seated drive like helping others or understanding the truth, or a pressing concern like not getting depressed or being more effective as a parent, then you're much more likely to be able to sustain it.

10. Be patient … and persistent

Establishing a regular meditation practice is a long-term project. You may miss days, get discouraged or just forget about meditation for a while. The key thing is to keep going. If you force yourself to meditate when you really don't feel like it, you'll probably have a reaction to the whole idea; but if you wait until you do feel like it before you pick your practice up again, it may never happen. But with time,

Finally, if you have learned meditation with me, do keep in touch and come to the Practice Sessions. I'd love to hear how you are getting on.

Birth Defect Risk Greater with Assisted Reproduction

Babies conceived through in vitro fertilization have an increased risk of birth defects, but most of this risk is due to factors related to the parents who seek this technology, and not to the procedure itself, a new study from Australia shows.

In the study, 7.2 percent of babies born after IVF had a birth defect, compared with about 6 percent of babies conceived naturally. However, most of the increased risk of birth defects could be explained by parental factors, such as the mother's age, smoking status and conditions during pregnancy.

"That's reassuring and good news to patients" who use IVF, said Dr. Avner Hershlag, chief of the Center For Human Reproduction at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y., who was not involved in the study. "It will hopefully alleviate a lot of anxiety," Hershlag said.

In the study, couples who used any type of assisted reproduction — including IVF, artificial insemination and fertility pills — were more likely to have a baby with birth defects. However, the risk varied depending on the type of treatment was used.

In particular, a procedure called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), in which a single sperm is injected into an egg, was associated with a higher risk of birth defects, and not all of the risk of ICSI could be explained by factors such as maternal age.

"Our findings can help provide guidance in counseling patients who are considering treatment for infertility," the researchers said.

Risk of birth defects

While previous studies have linked assisted reproduction technology and an increased risk of birth defects, the new study is one of the first to look at the risk associated with specific types of infertility treatments.

Michael Davies, of the University of Adelaide, and colleagues analyzed information from more than 308,000 babies born in South Australia, around 6,100 of whom had been conceived with the help of assisted reproductive technology.

Overall, 513 babies born with assisted reproductive technology, or 8.3 percent, had a birth defect, compared with 5.8 percent of babies born without assisted reproductive technology.

Birth defects seen in the study included cerebral palsy and heart defects.

The rate of birth defects for babies conceived through ICSI was 9.9 percent (139 born with birth defects). This method may have a higher risk of birth defects because the sperm selected may be developmentally compromised, Davies said.

People who used of clomiphene citrate, a drug that simulates ovulation, without the help of a doctor had triple the risk of having a baby with a birth defect.

Both artificial insemination and the use of treatments to induce ovulation with the help of a doctor were not associated with an increased risk of birth defects.

While some patients are concerned that freezing embryos may cause damage, Hershlag said, the study found frozen embryos had a reduced risk of birth defects.

Fertility options

The study suggests researchers can offer infertility treatments that do not increase the risk of birth defects, beyond the biological risk conferred by the parents, Davies said.

However, Hershlag noted that infertile parents do not always have options in which treatment to use. For instance, for couples in which the man is infertile due to low sperm count, ICSI is the only option if the parents want a child that is related to the father, Hershlag said.

The findings of the study have to be taken "with the knowledge that many of these patients do not have any other choice to have a child," Hershlag said.

The study was published today (May 5) in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Pass it on:  Assisted reproduction is associated with an increased risk of birth defects, but for IVF, this risk is mostly due to factors such as the mother's age.
