Schedule:

As a first step, you have to get a regular schedule for mediation. Only a regular meditation can bring the desired effects inside you. So make a regular schedule for meditation. You need at least half an hour for a day for meditation. If you cannot manage half an hour at a time, split the schedule. Better start meditating in the early morning for 10 minutes, 10 minutes in the middle of the day and remaining 10 minutes before you sleep.

Environment:

Secondly, to start meditation, you need a calm and relaxing environment. It may be at your home or at any quite place. You will enter at the core of your mind through mediation. So, make sure the place is relaxing enough and noise free before start meditation.

Sitting Position:

Next, make a comfortable sitting arrangement. You can meditate by sitting on the ground, sitting on a chair or lying on the ground. It is better to sit on a lotus position. If you cannot, there is no problem. Just keep your back straight. If y! ou are o n a chair, place your legs on the ground and hands on your thigh. Or if you lie on ground, make sure there is no soft sheet or element under your back.

Relax:

Do not think much over your position, or do not move for the proper adjustment of your limbs. Let them stay without any proper alignment (for the first time and later it will be automatically organised). Relax!

Breathe Deeply:

As the next step, close your eyes gently and take deep breathes. Pay proper attention on your breathe. Take a deep breath slowly by your nose, and let them out through your mouth slowly. Make a rhythm of deep breath for next few minutes. Deep breaths will make our mind quite.

Visualisation:

Visualisation plays the most important role for meditation. As the next step, you have to visualise a serene place by imagination. Choose the place you always longed for (it may be ocean side village or an island, or whatever you want). Think you are at that place of tranquillity. There is none to disturb you. You are all in all there. Walk through the roads. Listen to the roar of the sea, or visit the adjacent gardens you own there. Bring continuous images of that place and surrounding areas in your mind.

Focusing:

Through all the above mentioned processes, you are clearing your mind from all the anxieties of your life. You are communicating with your subconscious mind. Making your mind relaxed, focus on any specific issues. At this stage you some other thoughts will peep on your mind. Ignore them silently. Bring your focus on the specific fact. Try to get a clear picture of the issue. Imagine the best solution to solve it. You will be amazed when you will see the problem (or whatever it is) has been solved after your will! Moreover, you can add some autosuggestion for your betterment. These autosuggestions are greatly helpful.

Wake Up:

Now you have to wake up from meditation. Count until 10, slowly before you wake up. Open your eyes gently. Move your limbs. Feel the touch of f! resh vig our inside you to battle with the present.

The sacred pause

In our lives we often find ourselves in situations we can't control, circumstances in which none of our strategies work. Helpless and distraught, we frantically try to manage what is happening. Our child takes a downward turn in academics and we issue one threat after another to get him in line. Someone says something hurtful to us and we strike back quickly or retreat. We make a mistake at work and we scramble to cover it up or go out of our way to make up for it. We head into emotionally charged confrontations nervously rehearsing and strategizing.

The more we fear failure the more frenetically our bodies and minds work. We fill our days with continual movement: mental planning and worrying, habitual talking, fixing, scratching, adjusting, phoning, snacking, discarding, buying, looking in the mirror.

What would it be like if, right in the midst of this busyness, we were to consciously take our hands off the controls? What if we were to intentionally stop our mental computations and our rushing around and, for a minute or two, simply pause and notice our inner experience?

Learning to pause is the first step in the practice of Radical Acceptance. A pause is a suspension of activity, a time of temporary disengagement when we are no longer moving towards any goal. The pause can occur in the midst of almost any activity and can last for an instant, for hours or for seasons of our life.

We may take a pause from our ongoing responsibilities by sitting down to meditate. We may pause in the midst of meditation to let go of thoughts and reawaken our attention to the breath. We may pause by stepping out of daily life to go on a retreat or to spend time in nature or to take a sabbatical. We may pause in a conversation, letting go of what we're about to say, in order to genuinely listen and be with the other person. We may pause when we feel suddenly moved or delighted or saddened, allowing the feelings to play through our heart. In a pause we simply discontinue whatever we are doing—thinking, talking, walking, writing, planning, worrying, eating—and become wholeheartedly present, attentive and, often, physically still.

A pause is, by nature, time limited. We resume our activities, but we do so with increased presence and more ability to make choices. In the pause before sinking our teeth into a chocolate bar, for instance, we might recognize the excited tingle of anticipation, and perhaps a background cloud of guilt and self-judgment. We may then choose to eat the chocolate, fully savoring the taste sensations, or we might decide to skip the chocolate and instead go out for a run. When we pause, we don't know what will happen next. But by disrupting our habitual behaviors, we open to the possibility of new and creative ways of responding to our wants and fears.

Of course there are times when it is not appropriate to pause. If our child is running towards a busy street, we don't pause. If someone is about to strike us, we don't just stand there, resting in the moment—rather, we quickly find a way to defend ourselves. If we are about to miss a flight, we race toward the gate. But much of our driven pace and habitual controlling in daily life does not serve surviving, and certainly not thriving. It arises from a free-floating anxiety about something being wrong or not enough. Even when our fear arises in the face of actual failure, loss or even death, our instinctive tensing and striving are often ineffectual and unwise.

Taking our hands off the controls and pausing is an opportunity to clearly see the wants and fears that are driving us. During the moments of a pause, we become conscious of how the feeling that something is missing or wrong keeps us leaning into the future, on our way somewhere else. This gives us a fundamental choice in how we respond: We can continue our futile attempts at managing our experience, or we can meet our vulnerability with the wisdom of Radical Acceptance.

Often the moment when we most need to pause is exactly when it feels most intolerable to do so. Pausing in a fit of anger, or when overwhelmed by sorrow or filled with desire, may be the last thing we want to do. Pausing can feel like falling helplessly through space—we have no idea of what will happen. We fear we might be engulfed by the rawness of our rage or grief or desire. Yet without opening to the actual experience of the moment, Radical Acceptance is not possible.

Through the sacred art of pausing, we develop the capacity to stop hiding, to stop running away from our experience. We begin to trust in our natural intelligence, in our naturally wise heart, in our capacity to open to whatever arises. Like awakening from a dream, in the moment of pausing our trance recedes and Radical Acceptance becomes possible.

Common Pain Drugs Linked with Lower Skin Cancer Risk

Taking painkillers such as aspirin and ibuprofen may lower the risk of skin cancer, a new study from Denmark suggests.

Researchers found that people who took nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) were less likely to have three types of skin cancer, including the deadliest type, malignant melanoma.

The new findings do not mean that people should start taking NSAIDs for the purpose of preventing skin cancer, said study author Sigrรบn Jรณhannesdรณttir, an epidemiology researcher at Aarhus University Hospital. The drugs come with their own risks, such as ulcers and bleeding, she noted.

"We want to stress that sun protection remains the most important prevention against skin cancer," Jรณhannesdรณttir said.

The study showed an association, and not a cause-and-effect link, between the drugs and skin cancer risk.

Still, the researchers found a general lowering of skin cancer risk among people in the study who took NSAIDs for a longer time, and in those who took the drugs more frequently over a given amount of time. And other recent studies have suggested that lowering inflammation may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. Further studies should further explore this connection, Jรณhannesdรณttir said.

The study is published today (May 29) in the journal Cancer, and was funded by the Clincial Epidemiological Research Foundation of Denmark.

Skin cancer and inflammation

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the U.S. In 2012, more than 2 million cases of non-melanoma skin cancers will be diagnosed; fewer than 1,000 people will die from their disease, according to estimates from the National Cancer Institute.

Melanoma is a much deadlier cancer — about 76,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year, and 9,000 people will die of the disease.

In the study, the researchers collected the medical records of people in Denmark who were diagnosed with skin cancer between 1991 and 2009. They found nearly 2,000 people with squamous cell carcinoma, about 13,000 people with basal cell carcinoma, and 3,000 people with malignant melanoma. The researchers then searched a medical database and for each person with skin cancer, they identified 10 people without the disease who were the same age and gender, and who lived in the same county.

The researchers compared people's prescriptions for NSAIDs over the study period. In Denmark, the vast majority of people who need the drugs get prescriptions (rather than buying them off the shelf), because the government then covers part of the cost.

People who filled more than two prescriptions for NSAIDs were 15 percent less likely to develop squamous cell carcinoma, and 13 percent less likely to develop malignant melanoma, than people who fewer NSAIDs. For basal cell carcinoma, the effect of NSAIDs applied only to tumors located on areas of the body that typically get less sun, Jรณhannesdรณttir said.

Additionally, the researchers found that among people who took NSAIDs frequently and over a long time period (for at least 7 years) the cancer risk was reduced by 17 to 46 percent, depending on type and site of skin cancer.

"Inflammation is seen in many disorders," including allergies and autoimmune diseases, Jรณhannesdรณttir said. "Various drugs inhibit inflammatory processes in the body, but the most commonly used today are NSAIDs."

NSAIDs include ibuprofen and naproxen as well as newer drugs, called Cox-2 inhibitors, such as Celecoxib (sold in the U.S. under the brand name Celebrex) and Meloxicam (Mobic). In Denmark, only aspirin and low-dose ibuprofen are available over the counter, Jรณhannesdรณttir said.

People at high risk for skin cancer

The new study included people in the general population. Previous studies conducted among people at high risk for skin cancers found a stronger association between NSAIDs and basal cell carcinoma, and COX-2 inhibitors and squamous cell carcinoma, Jรณhannesdรณttir said.

It could be that people at high risk benefit more from the effects of the drugs, but this would have to be confirmed in further studies, she said.

While the reduced risk of skin cancer has not been proven, it's a potential effect that should be part of the discussion of the harms and benefits of NSAID use, she said.

Taking Too Much Vitamin D May Backfire, Study Suggests

Getting too little vitamin D is a well-known health risk, but a new study from Denmark suggests that getting too much could also be unhealthy.

Researchers examined blood samples from nearly 250,000 people in Copenhagen and found that those with middle levels of the vitamin, around 50 nanomoles per liter (nmol/l) of blood, had the lowest risk of dying over a three-year period. Compared with this group, people with very low levels of vitamin D, about 10 nmol/l, had the highest mortality rate— they were 2.31 times as likely to die over course of the study.

But people with higher-than-normal levels of vitamin D, about 140 nmol/l, were 1.42 times more likely to die over the study, compared with the lowest-risk group.

"A lot of research has been conducted on the risk of vitamin D deficiency," said study author Darshana Durup, a doctoral student at the University of Copenhagen. "However, there is no scientific evidence for a 'more is better' argument for vitamin D."

The researchers cautioned they found an association, not a cause-and-effect link, and more research must be done.

The blood samples were taken from people of all ages, who went to the doctor expressing myriad health concerns, and had their vitamin Dlevels measured as a result, the researchers said. After three years, 15,198 participants had died.

Vitamin D is critical to bone health, as it helps the essential nutrient calcium reach the bones. Some studies have suggested that low levels of the vitamin be linked with a higher cancer risk, but the evidence for this is conflicting.

This quote clearly points out the importance of reducing stress. In recent years it has become almost common knowledge that too much stress has an ill effect on our health.Our bodies are certainly miraculous, we just need to give them the support they require to achieve and maintain balance. More of us are aware of how massage therapy can help with this (even in small towns like Millersburg, Ohio) than ever before.

To understand the quote above a little better, it helps to know a bit about how the body deals with stress. The autonomic nervous system has two branches - the sympathetic and the parasympathetic. The sympathetic is engaged when we encounter a stressor, and its job is to help us to protect ourselves. This means a raise in blood pressure and blood sugar, and release of adrenalin, which helps us react quickly. The muscles receive extra blood and tighten, while blood is diverted somewhat from the digestive organs. This is only a little of the cascade of changes that happens very quickly.

The parasympathetic nervous system has the opposite kind of effects on the body. It promotes rest and relaxation by increasing digestive activity, allows the muscles to relax, lowers blood pressure and more. The PNS is all about reducing the effects of stress.

The sympathetic activity described above is extremely helpful when we really need it, like when we are in a dangerous situation. However, it has become the norm for many of us to be in this state, to some degree, much of our lives.

I've been thinking more about all of this since Dr. Robert Ader died at the end of 2011. Dr. Ader was a psychologist who was one of the first people to prove that mental processes can and do effect the body's immune system.

His obituary in the New York Times in! cluded t hese lines: "At the core of Dr. Ader's breakthrough research was an insight already obvious to any grandmother who ever said, 'Stop worrying or you'll make yourself sick.' He demonstrated scientifically that stress worsens illness -- sometimes even triggering it -- and that reducing stress is essential to health care."

Chronic worry, and chronic stress of all kinds, can take a toll on our digestion, on our breathing and our pain levels. It can disrupt sleep patterns and leave us feeling completely worn out. This lethargy is often worsened by the fact that the body's ability to repair tissue, which happens primarily in sleep, is weakened. As the cycle continues, ongoing muscle pain can develop.

Headaches, diabetes, asthma... The list of health problems triggered by or worsened by stress is a long one.

The good news is that there are lots of ways to reduce your stress levels. Massage therapy and self-massage are proven methods to dramatically reduce stress, but there are simple things you can do for yourself too.

A brisk walk on a wintry day can work wonders. Setting a timer on your computer to break up the monotony of sitting is a great one. You can even program a little physical activity into your day, whether it be stretching for just a few minutes every hour or two or taking a walk around the office.

The bottom line is that you probably already know the best things to reduce your stress, whether they include massage therapy or walking, because you experience the results firsthand. Since this is the case, the most important thing becomes actually allowing yourself to regularly do those things. This is grassroots healthcare.

Let us assume for a minute that all the discourses of the Buddha were composed in a mysterious kind of coded language.  If we really want to know what the Buddha was teaching we would first have to have the 'key' to unlock the code.  Without such a key we might read and understand the discourses of the Buddha the wrong way; coming up with ideas about Buddhism that are, frankly, wrong.

For the sake of argument, let's assume the key for those electing to follow the teachings of the Buddha, as found in the Pali cannon, was becoming a ariya-savaka, that is, one who has attained stream-entry or right view.  In the Mahayana tradition it would be the attainment of bodhicittotpada, that is, the manifestation of the mind that is awakened after which commences the life of a Bodhisattva.  With this key, both the savakas and Bodhisattvas could understand the Buddha's discourses eventually becoming Arhats and fully awakened Buddhas.

For a modern Buddhist this doesn't sound right—they reject it.  Why should there be some kind of preliminary attainment required to fully understand the Buddha's discourses?  Yet there is.  That is the incontestable fact.  Followers of Buddhism who have not entered the stream or have not had bodhicittotpada abide at the worldly level which means they really can't understand the Buddha's teachings.  They are still bound up with the psychophysical organism (skandha) which they can't distinguish from their self.  

Faced with the problem of not having the key to unlocking the code of Buddhism the  mischief of some modern Buddhists knows no limits.  This might explain why they rely so much on the Kalama Sutta which they believe gives them the right to accept or reject the teachings of the Buddha, especially rebirth and karma.  But this is not what Buddhism is about.  Not in the slightest.  They lack the key to understand true Dharma (saddharma).

Do you feel overhwelmed and at odds with your life? Does it seem like your mind rambles incessantly, as if you can never experience a moment of peace? Many people in our modern world describe their lives as frenzied and imbalanced. The good news is that it doesn't have to be this way. Many Asian cultures have understood something for the past several thousand years that modern people are gradually beginning to discover: That we have to learn how to work with our minds in a conscious and healthy way if we are to attract peace, abundance, and joy into our lives. Without a consistent method of cultivating awareness, we will be forever resigned to circumstances that feel out of our control. That is why so many modern people are struggling. We have lost the ancient practice of connecting our inner world of thoughts, feelings, and energy with our outer world of the circumstances we attract into our lives. Because of this, everything that appears seems to be random. We lose trust in the unfolding of the universe. As a result, our minds are filled with anxiety and worry, which only attracts more seeming chaos and confusion into our lives. Does this sound familiar?

The law of attraction states that what you focus on expands. If your thoughts and feelings resonate with anxiety and confusion, then you will attract more of those qualites to you through your relationships, work, finances, etc. The key is not to trick our minds into creating positive thoughts through affirmations or other methods, but to develop space around the workings of our minds altogether. Herein lies the magic of mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness is a method of becoming acutely aware of everything that happens within the scope of our perception. We shed light on what we think, feel, and sense. We make conscious all of the subconscious material that typically sabotages our good intentions. We don't try to change it. Instead, we just become extremely aware of it. We do this by sitting still and doing nothing but watching how our mi! nd works without attachment or judgment. We just sit and witness what takes place within us and we start to draw parallels between what we believe to be true and what we are constantly attracting into our lives.

Many people, particulalry Westerners, try meditation for a period of time and then give up after getting frustrated with the process. This is because we are always looking for results. We are deeply attached to our expectations of what should happen. Most of us try to use meditation to shut our minds down, to dwell in a space of 'no thought.' If you try to use meditation to stop thinking, you are in for a rude surprise. You simply cannot do it. In fact, the harder you try to stop thinking, the louder and more obnoxious your thoughts become. This is not the way. The main intention of mindfulness is to be fundamentally OK with whatever arises as you practice. Whether you have a good thought or a bad thought, you give it the same attention. You remain neutral. By doing this, you stop feeding the energy of your thoughts. This is the first step in cutting through the vicious cycle of

thought-feeling-reaction that keeps so many of us habitually attracting the wrong kinds of energy, people, and circumstances into our lives. If we believe what we think, the energy of the thought will evolve into a feeling. The momentum of the feeling will cause us to react to it, which will create a cause in the world that will always lead to an effect. The effect will always be a reflection of that initial thought impulse. So, if your thoughts are habitually centered around negativity, greed, fear, or narcissism, then the effects you will see in your life will mirror this back to you.

Mindfulness is a process of becoming truly proactive for the first time in your life. Most of the time, we are just reacting to what we think and feel, which brings us endless cycles of conflict and disappointment. When we remain neutral to our thoughts and feelings, then we will gradually make contact with an aspect of oursel! ves that is spontaneous and awake. We will act (not react) from this place. We will attract what we truly desire into our lives based on a conscious process of heightening our senses. And, yes, at some point the mind does slow down. We experience wonderful and refreshing moments of peace and openness. The universe is naturally seen as a benevolent place. Instead of our typical attempts to outsmart the universe, mindfulness is a humbling process of surrender and gratitude.

Cultivate space, endless space, around your thoughts and feelings. Allow your spirit to inhabit your body fully. Don't buy into self-defeating storylines and beliefs. Don't try to force yourself to see the positive in life or repeat useless affirmations that you have no innate connection with. Instead, taste the perfection of this moment as it is. If you can feel in your bones that you are fundamentally OK and that life is precious, you will attract much more meaningful relationships with people, better health, more fulfilling work and more prosperity on all levels of being. That is the power of mindfulness.

Physical VitalityMost of us don't think of meditation as being important in maintaining physical vitality. We know that healthy diet, proper supplementation, regular exercise, and a positive social support system are important for our health on all levels -- physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual. However, despite these healthy habits, many of us still struggle with managing our stress levels. Science is proving over and over that chronic stress can be deadly, contributing to our most serious health conditions.

This direct mind-body connection is something that Eastern philosophies have taught for millennia, and recent research has supplied us with a revealing new technical perspective. Clinical studies demonstrate that chronic stress may have a profound effect on our DNA by shortening our DNA telomeres. Telomere deterioration puts us at higher risk of developing cancer and other harmful conditions. The good news: There's an ancient and well-known mind-body practice which is now proving successful in physically repairing this telomere DNA damage, while restoring peace of mind at the same time. What is this practice? Simple meditation.

What Are Telomeres?Our genes are located on twisted, double-stranded molecules of DNA called chromosomes. At the ends of the chromosomes are stretches of DNA called telomeres. These are essentially caps that protect our genetic data, allow for cells to divide properly and reflect how we age. Similar to the plastic covers on the ends of shoelaces, telomeres protect chromosomes from fraying due to aging, poor health and environmental influences. Telomeres are shortened every time the cells divide; and when they become too short,! the cel ls are not able to divide properly. While researchers are already aware that telomeres shorten and deteriorate with aging, new studies demonstrate that chronic stress also contributes to their reduction. Further research shows that as telomeres shrink, cancer risk grows.

Meditation Protects TelomeresThe inevitable wear and tear of your telomeres cannot be halted altogether, but it can certainly be delayed and even reversed through the activation of a key enzyme called telomerase. Telomerase protects the ends of telomeres from weakening and fraying. So how do you reap the benefits of this super-charged enzyme? Studies show that psychological changes associated with regular meditation improve your ability to cope with stress and contribute to increased telomerase activity.

Simple Practice for BeginnersIf you're not sure how to begin meditating, studies show that even just 10 minutes a day can provide significant mental, emotional and physical health benefits. Here's a simple technique to get you started: Simply sit quietly and focus your attention, as well as your breathing, on a particular object such as a small stone. As thoughts and emotions arise, simply acknowledge and release them, bringing your attention back to your breath. My spiritual teacher I.F. of 17 years, had a very unique way of sharing his wisdom with me.

His teachings were mainly oral. We would sit facing each other early in the morning at a small card table, munching on bagels and cheese. We would sip coffee and he would talk. I would listen and take notes.

This was nothing like the Chelas sitting cross legged around a Guru, as they do in the East.

This was a Western master teaching a western student. His patience with me and the world in general was infinite.

He told me that many of the things he spoke about, he didn't expect me to immediately understand. They were 'Seed Thoughts' as he called them, that would go into my subconscious and bear fruit for later in life.

It is now over 30 years and as I look back, I smile. Yes, many of the 'Seed Thoughts' have born fruit and changed my life and my consciousness.

I will share some of them with you now. Allow them to grow and bear fruit for you. I will put his exact words in quotes followed by my commentaries.

"We are not properly conscious nor are other people properly conscious."

We all spend too much time in our past, thinking and re-thinking events, both good and bad. This is not being conscious, this belongs to the realm of sub-consciousness, memorie.

To be conscious, we need to be in the HERE-NOW of the moment, not in the past nor the future.

"Increase of consciousness of oneself, leads to more room for yourself in the inner world."

There are many levels of consciousnes and many worlds to be explored in the 'inner worlds'. By becoming more conscious you open these worlds for yourself.

"Be careful, as you build the structures for your inner rooms; someone will be trying to pull the ladder out from under you. That someone is your personality."

Most of the allegories about the fight between light and darkness takes on many forms. Within the individual the fight is between one's highe! r self a nd one's personality.

Our personality is where all the (lies and falsehoods we have picked up on our trip lie.) They want dominion over our life and do not want you to become more conscious. Because they know consciouness is their death knoll.

The fight is WITHIN us not WITHOUT.

"The slow difficult steps to consciousness leads to freedom."

He used to say " Yard by yard, lifes's too hard, inch by inch life's a cinch."

"Understand, that one of the biggest problems we face is when we project our inner negative attitiudes on others and blame them."

We cannot accuse another of bad temper, meaness, hate, suspicion, unjustness, anger, or bitterness. We feel and sense these negative attitudes in others because they also live inside us.

"Stop looking for the splinter in your brother's eyes when you have a log in yours!"

"The uproar of your daily life will drown out your spiritual life."

You must find a way to set some time appart for your spiritual studies. Every day life comes rushing in, in a million differnent directions and steals your time and energy.

"Your inner man/woman must be renewed and fed day by day or it will be drowned by the uproar of life."

'The Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon' is a destination for those who truly want to travel off the beaten track. Closed to outside visitors until 1974, trekking holidays and tours in Bhutan are becoming increasingly popular, but it is still relatively unknown compared to Nepal, Tibet and the other Himalayan nations. Yet with its traditional Buddhist culture and stunning mountain landscapes, it is an unforgettable holiday destination for those who choose to venture there - here are five of the essential highlights to see whilst on a trek or a tour in Bhutan.

Gankar Punsum

Mountains are sacred in Bhutanese culture, and climbing peaks that are over 6000m in height is strictly forbidden. The country is home to the highest unclimbed mountain in the world - Gangkar Punsum (7,570m). Located on the northern border with Tibet, Gangkar Punsum can be seen in its full glory on a high mountain trekking holiday to Bhutan. Distant views can also be had from many other vantage points that are easy to reach whilst on a Bhutan tour. You may not be able to climb Gankar Punsum but, in a world where almost every mountain has seen dozens if not hundreds of visitors to the top, this just serves to make it that much more special and an essential sight to see on a holiday to Bhutan.

Lunana

This remote northern corner of Bhutan is one of the most unspoilt and seldom explored mountain regions in the world. Getting to Lunana is a challenge in itself - the region is only accessible through a few 5000m passes that are snowed in during the winter months - and trekking in Lunana involves long days of tough hiking. In fact, it is so remote that even the King of Bhutan has not been there. But adventurous trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking scenery and a rare opportunity to walk in the shadow of unspoilt mountains with only yaks and the legendary yeti for company!

Paro Tsechu

Bhutan is becoming famous for its spectacular Buddhist festivals (Tsechu). Most tours to Bhutan will take in a festival i! f the ti ming is right, but the best one to visit is the Paro Tsechu, the most important Buddhist festival in the country. This five day religious celebration (held in Spring each year) is a true feast for the senses, as monks dress as saints and demons to re-enact the great battles of Buddhist mythology, ritual dances are performed, music is played, and copious amounts of barley wine and butter tea are drunk. The festival culminates in the unfurling of a giant thanka (Buddhist image) which confers merit on all who observe it. The rituals have gone unchanged for over a thousand years, and a visit to Paro Tsechu is often the central highlight of a tour in Bhutan.

The Tiger's Nest Monastery

Bhutan is a deeply religious country, and is home to some of the most impressive Buddhist temples in the world. There are numerous dzongs (temple fortresses) that should be seen on a tour of Bhutan, but Taksang (Tiger's Nest) Monastery is undoubtedly the most famous. The name is inspired after the story of Padmasambhava, the monk who brought Buddhism to Bhutan, who apparently flew to Taksang on the back of a tigeress to defeat five demons.

Visitors trek up to the dzong on foot or by mule, and are rewarded with the sight of the red and white temple clinging precariously to the side of the mountain, bedecked by prayer flags and shrouded with mist. A truly unforgettable sight.

Thimphu

Anyone on a tour of Bhutan will inevitably spend time in Thimphu. The capital of Bhutan, it is nowhere near as well known as the backpackers' Mecca of Kathmandu, but still has plenty to offer its visitors. The Memorial Chorten of the late king, archery contests at Changlimithang Stadium, the silversmiths' workshops, the weekend market and the hospital (specialising in herbal medicine) are just a few of the many cultural highlights to see in Thimphu.

There are plenty of amazing sights to see on holiday in Bhutan, but these five should be more than enough to get you started!

Surrender to a lower power. Or equal. Not higher.

I used to believe in surrendering to a higher power. And not only to my wife -- but also to a spiritual, supernatural, metaphysical higher power.

No more. Don't see any reason to.

Now I'm much more comfortable with surrendering to lower and equal powers. Which, I suspect, actually are the only varieties powers come in. In fact, we could be talking singular here.

Power. Not powers. There's no higher or lower. Just varying manifestations of One Energy, One Nature, One Cosmos, One Reality.

But religions, spiritual systems, mystical philosophies, and other advocates of surrendering to a higher power would have us believe that life can't be fully lived without imagining some "sky god" is looking down, guiding our steps, inspiring our positive motivations, leading us out of darkness and into the light.

Bullshit. Crap. Fantasy. And self-serving.

Because almost always, somebody gains from all this higher power surrendering. Not the higher power, since there's no evidence of one, but the holier-than-thou men and women who run the organizations which claim to point the way to Higher Power'ness.

Groupies, syncophants, and hangers-on get pleasure from associating with powerful people, even at a distance. That's sort of strange.

But at least those objects of adoration are real. Surrendering to higher powers which are undetectable, even if supposedly manifested in a living saint, guru, master, prophet, or whoever, is even more ridiculous. 

I speak from experience.

For more than thirty years I sought to follow the will of what the Indian Sant Mat teachings variously call God, Spirit, Shabd, Satguru, and other high-pointing terms. I got a lot of pleasure from obeying rules, performing volunteer services, giving talks, writing books, opening my mind, heart, and soul to whatever the higher power I believed in wanted me to do.

Not surprisingly, the more I identified with this higher power, the more elevated above other human beings I felt myself to be. 

Sure, I knew how to appear all humble and selfless. That's the first thing you learn in Higher Power School: how to say stuff like "It's not me doing it; it's Him," or "I'm the dust beneath the feet of the Master, nothing more."

But lurking just below the surface of every surrender to a higher power is a feeling of "I'm so cool! So blessed! So special! I'm the Higher Power's best buddy!"

Meaning, other people aren't so cool, so blessed, so special, so befriended. Eventually I got tired of feeling humbly superior. It annoyed me when fellow Surrenderers to a Higher Power would look upon my non-believing wife with pity.

"Poor woman. She doesn't have a direct connection to God like we do. Maybe in another life."

Actually, my wife wasn't deprived. She felt totally content. Just as I feel now, having given up the conceit of knowing Mr. or Ms. Higher Power more intimately than those poor souls who can't get in the door of the exclusive spirituality club I once belonged to.

Our twelve year old dog, Serena, doesn't move as well as she used to. No matter. Almost every afternoon I still take her on our traditional dog walk, a two mile loop around our rural neighborhood. 

Serena used to pull me along at the end of the leash, she was so eager and energetic to explore sights and smells that beckoned around the next corner. Now, we plod along at a speed considerably slower than I'd walk at if I were by myself.

So slow, my habitually fast-walking wife finds it frustrating to accompany Serena and me. Usually she takes our younger dog, Zu Zu, on a much more aerobic walk. I understand her attitude, but I've surrendered to my commitment to walk with Serena for as long as she can, at the speed Serena is comfortable going at.

If Serena were to stop, lie down, and take her last breath on our afternoon dog walk, I'd be happy. Not that Serena died -- that I was with her at the end, while she was enjoying one of her favorite activities. 

Given the "dog years" thing, it's unlikely that Serena and I are going to die simultaneously on our dog walk.

However, every time I'm out with Serena, watching her sniff those marvelously interesting smells left by passers-by (canines, humans, deer, squirrels, whatever captures her nose fancy), I think It wouldn't be the worst way to go, holding the leash of the dog I love so much, out on the road we each have come to know so well.

That's my surrender. Not to a higher power called God. To a lower or equal power named Dog. It feels precisely, exactly, 100% the same as my previous surrendering to a imagined higher power. Well, actually better.

Because I'm no longer looking upward and outward for the power that I've surrendered to. Sideways and inward -- those are the directions which now point to where I want to go.

The natural world and me; we're connected in a way that seems a whole lot more genuine than the subservient posturing I used to engage in during my Surrender to a Higher Power days. Everyday life always is guiding me.

There's no need to look outside of nature, or ourselves, for some mythical guidance mechanism.

Simple Meditation for Beginners: Program Review

I decided to take up meditation as a New Year's resolution, for a variety of reasons. I recognized some qualities in myself that I wanted to confront, and it seemed that meditation was just the next natural step in my journey of self-actualization. Deciding I wanted to learn how to meditate was the easy part. Figuring out how to learn it was the hard part. There are SO MANY different types of meditation, and even more meditation philosophies to sort through. I read what I could online, but meditation is not necessarily easy to understand . . . that is, until you've done it. After some trial and error, I came across the "Simple Meditation for Beginners" course. I was a beginner, and I preferred simplicity, so it sounded perfect. Here are the details of my experience with this program:

Things I wanted to accomplish. Meditation was important to me because I didn't know how to relax. Also, I was having some issues with self-acceptance, and also encountering road blocks when it came to achieving some personal goals. (These were the things that I needed to work on. Your list may be different. Whatever the case may be, you need to take the time to create a list of your meditation goals. That way, you will be able to focus your meditations on your own circumstances.)

What came with the course. "Simple Meditation for Beginners" is broken into four parts - one per week. You get an instructional ebook for each week to help you develop meditation skills gradually, as well as a course manual (which gives you an overview of the entire process) and five guided meditation MP3s. You also get a virtual journal to record your progress (I was not too into this idea, but eventually came around to seeing the benefits).

Pluses. This course is super-easy to follow. You can tell the creator is a genuine lover of meditation, and that he honestly wants to help people learn. That meant a lot to me, as I felt that I was being guided by a friend. For the price, I cannot imagine a better s! tarter p rogram.

Minuses. For people (like myself) who are interested in learning about the deeper points of meditation (like the chakras and transcendentalism, for example), the course seemed a bit simplistic. Sure, I learned the basics . . . but I was left with the feeling that I needed to continue on in my studying if I wanted to truly grasp all that meditation had to offer me. This course is most definitely "for beginners," as it states, and you will have to do further research if you want to progress on your meditation journey.

Results. Of course, it is impossible to measure the results in a scientific way. What I can tell you is that I noticed I was sleeping through the night after regular practice of the techniques I learned in the system (and I used to wake up several times a night with anxiety). I also felt more positive throughout the day. That's the best way I have of describing it: I simply had less negative and detrimental thoughts. Lastly (and perhaps this is the most tangible indicator of my success): I finally accomplished those personal goals I'd set for myself the prior year, which up until that point had been mere fantasies. That in itself was enough to convince me of the power of meditation, and of the effectiveness of this course.

"Simple Meditation for Beginners" is a great program for getting started in meditation. Although it does not reach into the broader spectrum of meditative practices, it does provide you with a great foundation to build upon. If you are looking for a fast and easy entrance into the world of meditation, then this could be the perfect program for you.

Kicking 2 Unhealthy Habits May Bring Big Results, Study Says

Among the deluge of advice on how to be healthier, a new study suggests changing just two particular habits would go a long way toward helping people shape up: Get off the couch, and eat more fruits and vegetables.

People in the study who were told to follow those two bits of advice not only did so but changed other unhealthy habits in the process. Meanwhile, those in the study who were working toward other combinations of goals, such as exercising more and eating less fat, fared less well overall.

"Americans have all these unhealthy behaviors that put them at high risk for heart diseaseand cancer, but it is hard for them and their doctors to know where to begin to change those unhealthy habits," said lead study author Bonnie Spring, a professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. "This approach simplifies it."

In the study, researchers asked participants to take part in a various combinations of healthy activities. The researchers divided the study's 204 participants into four groups, and each group was given two activities to work on, such as "exercise more and eat more fruits and vegetables" or "be less sedentary and eat less fat."

The group that was told to spend less time being sedentary and to eat more fruits and veggies increased the amount of fruits and vegetables they ate from one daily serving to almost three, on average, and they cut the amount of free time they spent being sedentary by more than 90 minutes per day. That group also saw the greatest overall gains.

For example, the group that was told to "get more exercise and eat less fat" tended to exercise more over time, and decreased their percentage of daily calories that came from fat, from 11.4 to 9.1 percent. But this group experienced very little decrease in sedentary time, and almost no increase in fruit and veggie consumption.

On the other hand, the group that was told to "be less sedentary and eat more fruits and vegetables" saw an increase in their exercise that was comparable with groups asked to "exercise more," as well as a similar drop in fat consumption — even though they weren't asked to limit fat.

Researchers concluded that focusing on cutting sedentary time and adding more fruits and veggies ended up also limiting fatty food intake, which often occurs during the hours spent in front of the television.

The researchers noted that 86 percent of all study participants said they tried to maintain their lifestyle changes even after the study ended.

"We found people can make very large changes in a very short amount of time and maintain them pretty darn well," Spring said. "It's a lot more feasible than we thought."

The study had limitations — for example, only a quarter of the participants were male, and the researchers relied on self-reported data on what participants were eating, and about their activities. Additionally, the people were paid to be in the study.

The study was published Monday (May 28) in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine.

Pass it on: Aiming to eat more fruits and veggies and spend less time on the couch may be two of the easiest ways to start a healthier lifestyle.

Developing Spirituality

Spirituality means that we know we are more than just the physical self. We have an energy or spirit attached to us. In some religious circles our spirit is referred to as the soul and is immortal and that the spirit was created by some divine maker or creator.

On the other hand, spirituality to some is a sense of connectiveness to the spiritual nature of the universe, the collective universe that is a part of us all. What the psychologist Carl Jung referred to as the collective unconscious. The collective unconscious is the reservoir of the experiences of all humans.

Some believe that spirituality is simply getting in touch with your higher consciousness because we all have the divine spirit within us and it can be accessible. Regardless of your definition, when you begin a spiritual journey, you will begin to change your perception, learn to wean yourself from societal morals, traditional thinking and the conditioning of childhood.

Spirituality is not a fad or a brief moment but a way of looking at your overall environment or world view and is a lifelong pursuit. Regardless how one person defines spirituality, there are common characteristics. There is the development of love toward others, which is not defined as a true love or romantic love but a positive feeling of concern for other peoples' welfare.

Getting in touch with one's own Deity is important for those who have a Deity. It is not necessary to believe in divine being or God to be spiritual. Many people see our spirit as divine in its own right. Therefore, communicating with your inner self will be the order of the day.

Although you may not hear a clear voice, you may suddenly have a thought come to mind and as you become adept at contacting your spirit, the more answers or outcomes will take place. It's at this time that many people contact their spirit guide, a thought or vivid dream/visualization of a person or sometimes an animal that is helpful in answering questions or steering you in the right dir! ections.

Not everyone believes in organized religion due to the fact many types of religions tend to be more dogmatic with church beliefs rather than that of studying or worshipping a creator or son of a creator. Not everyone is happy with an idea of a supreme being, but everyone can relate to the spiritual. This is the reason why many people see a distinct difference between religions and spirituality. But when we start to communicate with ourselves---our higher selves, we actually begin to understand ourselves and the world around us much better and it gives us a sense of the divine without having to describe it of define it.
