An open mind is like an open well. It is easily contaminated by anything blowing in the wind. At least that is the problem with what many call an open mind. For example, you may have heard someone called open minded because he believes in visitors from space, bending spoons with mind power, and "remote viewing." But isn't this more a sign of a gullible mind? Let's look at a healthier definition.

Open Mind - A Definition

We all like to think that we are open minded. Here is what that means according to a couple different dictionaries: 1. Receptive to new and different ideas or the opinions of others; 2. Not narrow or conservative in thought, expression, or conduct.

That sounds reasonable, and we might want to fit those definitions. The problem comes when we take this to mean that we must entertain any idea regardless of merit, or that believing in unlikely things is a sign of open-mindedness. Then we begin to give too much credit to faulty ideas and unsupportable beliefs in the name of having an open mind.

For example, I watched a program on crop circles the other day. These are circles and other geometric shapes of flattened crops that appear in fields around the world. For years many speculated that spaceships from other planets, "energy vortexes" and other outrageous things caused them. "Experts" claimed that they could not have been caused by humans. Much of the public bought into this hype in the name of having an open mind.

Of course when several individuals and groups finally claimed responsibility, and even showed exactly how they made the designs, they were ignored by many. Some people didn't have an open mind after all -at least not open to the most likely scenario. They wanted a particular answer (space aliens) or wanted the mystery to be maintained. To this day the tricksters make their designs only to have paranormal "experts" tromp into the fields the following day and proclaim that no human could have done it.

Note that being curious about t! he myste ry, and speculating about possible causes is not the problem. Being "receptive to new and different ideas" is a good thing. Adopting beliefs without supporting evidence may not be, however. Being receptive to the idea that previously unknown forces can cause things to happen is open minded, but it would also be very closed-minded to exclude the possibility that there are more normal explanations - especially when the bulk of the evidence points to this.

So what does it mean to have an open mind? To be receptive to new ideas and to avoid narrowness of thought, certainly. But being open minded doesn't mean we have to accept ideas that make no sense, or adopt beliefs without any evidence or reason. And it has to mean at least that we are open to the possibility that the explanations we would like or which are more interesting may be wrong.

You have a brain that can analyze various possible explanations for things. An open mind may assure you that you consider all those possibilities, but it shouldn't prevent you from discarding those explanations without evidence in favor of those with evidence. In other words, it should never be an excuse to believe anything in the absence of good thinking.

Sona further trained for over three years at monasteries following Ajahn Chah in northeast Thailand, especially Wat Pah Nanachat. Upon his return to Canada in 1994 he helped found Birken Forest Monastery near Pemberton, BC. As its spiritual guide, Ajahn ("teacher") Sona has led the monastery through each stage of its growth. He established Birken (or, Sฤซtavana, 'cool forest') in its final location south of Kamloops BC in 2001. Ven. Sona has ample experience leading meditation retreats and lecturing on Buddhist meditation and practice, both in Canada and abroad. What does it mean to have sluggish mind? What can we do to help combat this common occurrence? In today's society we have so many comforts' that there is a tendency to allow our mind to become sluggish or slow. We refuse or are unaware that we should challenge our minds to stay in shape. It is our responsibility to keep our minds exercised and fit. It is not enough to just keep our bodies in shape; we must make the same efforts to keep our minds sharp. The distractions of today's society are holding our minds hostage.

How can we begin to fix this problem? Reading is one of the best ways to keep our minds in shape. It forces our minds to focus and pay attention. It is causes a connection to be made within our minds, another words, there is mental activity. In reading the mind travel, it experiences, it draws conclusions and it sees with the mental eye of the spirit. The exercise of reading continues today as a favorite of the young and the old. We should always read; it is a free exercise.

Another good exercise for the mind is writing. There is a freeness in writing that can is different and holds its own special place. There are so many benefits in the writing, here are a few: the mind is exercised, the heart of the inner is touched, it allows a personal connection to the world, it heals the mind and soul, and there is a special freeness to the writer. If you practice writing, you will continue to challenge your mind.

Meditation and quiet time can allow one to put things into prospective. The mind slow in meditation and the thoughts begin to focus and align. In meditation the clutter of the mind will often fall away. As one practices meditation the heart begins to clear and one is able to focus on what is important. The quiet time of mediation allows one to get away from the distraction of daily life. We begin to see what is really important in life. The mind begins to center itself and one begins to find an inner peace.

Lastly, we have to continually make the effort to ke! ep our m ind from being sluggish. Just like jogging, there has to be an effort on our part. We have to be willing to pull away to from the many distractions of life. We have to develop a daily exercise program for the mind. If we make the effort we will reap the reward. It is all on us.

There is so much talk about meditation and its benefits - but how does meditation work? A lot of study has gone into how exactly meditation brings about the benefits felt by people who practice it regularly. Research studies reveal that meditation induces a healthy relaxed state resulting in a lower heart rate, lower respiratory rate, and lower pulse rate. In fact, it is a wonderfully easy way to rest the body. Meditation increases alertness, creativity and cultivates clarity of thought. There is proof that the benefits of meditation are both psychological and physiological.

Specific Changes That Occur From Meditation:

Meditation works by lowering the metabolic rate of the person, providing them deep relaxation. There is lower consumption of oxygen soon after the person begins to meditate. According to studies, the individual who meditates consumes lesser air and takes lesser number of breaths each minute. The blood pressure falls to normal even with those suffering from hypertension. In the nervous system, there is a reduced amount of activity, making us calmer. Meditation gives you a better understanding of your own mind, teaches you how to reach a relaxed and calm state and gives you the ability to assess everything objectively.

The Effects Of Meditation:

So how does meditation work? The first thing you become aware of after you meditate for some time is a sense of stability. Since it deals with breathing, you will find it easy to concentrate on whatever you do without getting distracted. Meditation also brings about a great clarity of mind, letting you arrange your thoughts properly allowing you to think clearly. It brings about an end to stress, through intense relaxation and therefore improves health.

However, those who suffer from serious mental disorders would do well to consult their health care providers before they take up meditation to relieve their symptoms, so that the process of healing is not delayed, since there are cases where meditation without proper guidance can make some symptoms worse.

Certain meditation methods involve exercises in focus while others involve an analysis of the mind, resulting in alertness and giving direction. Two genes are more common among people who eat more food, and consume higher-fat and higher-calorie foods, possibly playing a role in obesity, according to a new study.

Certain versions of the two genes — called FDO and BDNF— were linked with carriers' eating habits, and could be one reason some people eat more meals and snacks, as well as higher-calorie foods.

People carrying one version of FDO tended to say they were more attracted to sugary, fatty foods, while those with a version of BDNF said they ate, on average, 100 more calories per day people without that version.

In the long run, these habits[SM1] could result in serious weight gain, according to the researchers.

However, "genetic traits alone do not mean obesity is inevitable," said lead author Jeanne McCaffery, a psychiatry professor at Brown University's medical school.

These genes have previously been linked to obesity, and both are expressed, or turned on, in the part of the brain that controls appetite and cravings. But diet and exercise can still be used to control weight gainin people carrying the genes, McCaffery said.

Making healthy food choices and getting plenty of exercise remain the best methods of combating weight gain, the researchers said. But understanding who is genetically predisposed to gain weight could help people take preventative measures to avoid gaining those extra pounds.

The research found the association, but more work is needed to understand the reasons why and how these genes may cause larger and less healthy appetites, researchers said.

The researchers surveyed more than 2,000 participants about their eating habits over the previous six months, and tested their DNA.

The researchers looked at differences in almost a dozen genes that have been thought to influence obesity, particularly in children,when considering the results of the survey, and narrowed them down to the two that had the strongest impact on diet choices.

"The good news is that eating habits can be modified, so we may be able to reduce one's genetic risk for obesity by changing these eating patterns," McCaffery said.

The study was published today (May 23) in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Fertility Treatment for Ovary Disorder Hurts Pregnancy Chances

A common strategy for treating infertility in women with polycystic ovary syndrome may actually reduce their chances of pregnancy, a new study suggests.

In the study, some women with PCOS were given progestin as a first step in their infertility treatment. Progestin, which is a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone, leads to a thickening in the lining of the uterus, and is sometimes administered before fertility drugs to women with PCOS who wish to become pregnant.

However, women who skipped the progestin treatment before receiving fertility drugs were four times more likely to conceive than women given progestin. Ultimately, 20 percent of the women who did not receive progestin gave birth, compared with about 5 percent of the women who received progestin, the researchers said.

"Our results indicate that a treatment with progestin before ovulation induction is counterproductive in helping women with PCOS achieve pregnancy," said study researcher Dr. Esther Eisenberg, of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Ovulation induction refers to the drugs given to stimulate the release of an egg.

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a disorder in which the ovaries, and sometimes the adrenal glands, produce excess amounts of hormones known as androgens. Women with PCOS typically have menstrual irregularities, and may have difficulty getting pregnant. As many as 5 million U.S. women have the condition, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

The study, which involved more than 600 women with PCOS, was published online this month in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology. It was funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Capturing The Subconscious Mind With Subliminal Advertising

Subliminal advertising is considered to be the most powerful representation of ideas that appeals to the emotional and unconscious mind. It is a response to a stimulus unknowingly. Normal level of thinking is not enough to perceive such advertisements as they are designed by experts, who have studied the psychological reactions of people to different factors, that they exploit. These advertising slogans help in creating a spectacular spark in our subconscious mind. Alarmingly, each of us is engaged in a deceptive subliminal advertising without our intention. These advertisers tap our subconscious mind finally controlling us.

Subliminal messages in advertising have little chance of being perceived as such. Such messages are being expressed below the human threshold, and are being registered at the human subconscious level. Both good and bad messages can be carried in this way. Subliminal advertisements are usually played between movies. The mind is suddenly being shifted to another level while seeing such commercials. A sudden stimulus might occur in the subconscious mind that is being recognized only much later, till which time it has had its desired effect. Commercial advertisements usually seep into the perception unnoticed. They condition us without our being aware of our thinking being modified. This unnoticed provocation motivates us silently to purchase those products. The messages are camouflaged tactfully deep inside the advertisements.

Subliminal advertisements pop up within a second and they disappear at the same instance. The subconscious mind is capable of capturing the images that appears even in a fraction of a second. There is subliminal software to perceive those things that have never been experienced before. Such software teaches the subconscious mind to admit only the truth. The false signals will be inactive in the mind, and only the active ones remain.

Advertisements are initiated to grab a share of your mind. A desire can be stimulated that may register on y! our subl iminal mind. Embedded messages are not present in all advertisements, though, and there is no way of finding out if an advertisement is concealed with subliminal perception. Studies have proved that such hidden perception has the ability to affect individual behavior. In certain cases, it has proved effective in even enhancing memory. These messages unknowingly travel through the reasoning ability and move straight into the subconscious mind.

There are laws that restrict the use of subliminal advertisements. These acts are, however, not powerful enough to control the big advertising companies from producing such advertisements. The only option left with people is to be aware of advertisement secrets. There is still no optimal evidence of any company promoting subliminal advertisements, and in itself it cannot be said to a bad thing.

Studies have proved that people are responsive to subliminal sounds too. Sounds create a significant impact on the subconscious level that we tend to remember after a long time. This same theory can be put in on explaining subliminal messages. Human eyes are very sensitive to any color. Bright colors can be easily captured within seconds and passed to the brain.

While watching films, or browsing the internet, we are always prone to such advertisements. Being aware of the scientific theory and advertising tactics will help us. Bringing our mind to a control by making it adamant to such subliminal advertisements is the only way of rescuing it from their effect. Keeping away from subliminal advertisements is not possible as it may pop up at any time, on any screen. Diverting the mind completely to something else is perhaps the ideal way of deleting the ad from the mind, but is it really possible? Give it a deep thought.

How Do Radiation Treatments for Cancer Work?

"The Healthy Geezer" answers questions about health and aging in his weekly column.

Question: I have a friend who is undergoing radiation treatments for cancer. I was wondering how this works. Doesn't the radiation burn everything it touches?

Answer: Radiation therapy kills cancer cells by damaging their genetic material. This process prevents the cells from growing. Radiation attacks all cells in a targeted area, but most healthy cells recover when treatment ends.

When you are given radiation therapy—also called irradiation, radiotherapy or x-ray therapy—physicians attempt to protect the good cells by shielding them. They also limit dosage and spread out the treatments.

About half of all cancer patients receive some type of radiation therapy, which uses ionizing radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. This therapy can be delivered from machines outside your body or from radioactive material inserted into your body.

External radiation is the most common type used in this therapy. Internal radiation uses sealed implants in or near the tumor. Systemic radiation therapy employs unsealed radioactive materials that circulate throughout the body. In some cases more than one type of radiation is prescribed.

External radiation uses a machine that directs high-energy rays into the tumor. Most external radiation is given over many weeks during outpatient visits.

Internal radiation (also called brachytherapy) uses radioactive metal pellets, seeds, ribbons, wires, needles, capsules or tubes that are implanted. In some cases, patients may have to be admitted to a hospital for this procedure. Implants may be left in the patient temporarily or permanently.

Radioactive drugs are used in systemic radiation. These drugs can be given by mouth or injection. Systemic radiation often requires a brief hospital stay.

Radiation therapy may be used to treat almost every type of solid tumor and cancers of the blood (leukemia) and lymphatic system (lymphoma). The type of radiation used depends upon many circumstances, such as the type of cancer and its location.

Radiation therapy also can be used to reduce pain from cancer. This is called palliative radiation therapy.

Will radiation therapy make you radioactive?

External radiation therapy will not make you radioactive. If you undergo internal radiation therapy, your body may give off a small amount of radiation briefly.

If the radiation is in a temporary implant, you will be asked to stay in the hospital and may have to limit visitors during treatment. Permanent implants give off small doses of radiation over weeks. The radiation usually is confined to the treatment area; the risk of exposure to others is small.

Sometimes doctors recommend that you protect the people around you if you have systemic radiation. With this type of therapy, radioactive materials can get into your body fluids. In most cases, safety precautions must be followed only the first few days after treatment. Over time the radiation becomes weaker and your body gets rid of it.

You Do Yoga September 2011 Newsletter

Hello Yogis, and happy September! It seems like we always start our newsletter this way, but really - there is such amazing stuff going on with You Do Yoga!! It's easy to get carried away with so much happening, so we'll hit the highlights here and then refer you to the website for the details.

You Do Yoga Anderson Township hit the ground running on August 1st, and we can't thank everyone enough for helping put it all together. We were surprised to see our new space filling up so fast with so many great people. If you haven't yet had the chance, swing by our new studio at 7218 Beechmont Avenue 45230 and see what You Do Yoga is doing on the Eastside of Cincinnati! Our September schedule has a few small changes, so double-check the website and then head on over for a class!

A bit more on our rapidly evolving Anderson Township location:

The first of many Family Yoga events will take place at our Anderson Township studio on September 17th at 7pm, opening with an all-ages (kids and adults too!) yoga practice followed by a child-friendly movie. Feel free to bring beverages and snacks for the movie, and be prepared for fun! Donations will be gratefully accepted but this event is open to all! And as long as we are on the subject of families, we want to get the word out early for this special offering: starting October 2nd we will begin an 8 week session of Pre-Natal Yoga, taking place every Sunday at 10AM in Anderson Township. More information will be available online.

We are going to be hosting the Seiki Aikido group at our Anderson Township Studio twice a week. Seiki Aikido offers a unique approach to realistic martial arts training. Participation is by instructor approval only, but we invite you to come observe a class.

A couple of changes to mention about the You Do Yoga Downtown Studio Schedule: Starting in September, our Donation-based Community Yoga class moves forward 15 minutes to 8:45AM. This will allow Liz a full 90 minutes to wring you out and get you ready for the weekend! We are glad to open our studio for donation-based classes that make yoga even more accessible to our beautiful community. In fact, our "Meditation by Donation" is now going to be offered twice weekly, at Noon on both Sundays and Wednesdays. This is an open meditation practice that will include some light stretching and guidance in basic breathing and meditation techniques, along with time and space for personal practice. Need Workout Motivation? Try a Virtual Partner

Can't find a gym buddy? Don't sweat it — new research shows that even a virtual exercise partner might boost your motivation to exercise.

Researchers found that women who biked alone experienced a decline in motivation over time, whereas those partnered with a virtual friend had no decrease in motivation.

Additionally, women without partners biked for an average of 11 minutes, while women with virtual partners biked for 20 minutes. Women who cycled in a group and also had a virtual friend biked for 22 minutes.

This increase "is a substantial gain for those trying to increase their physical activity," said study researcher Brandon Irwin, a doctoral student at Michigan State University.

Women who biked alongside a "virtually present" exercise partner were told their partners were biking at the same time they were, on a similar bike in another location. But in fact, the virtual friend was a recording of someone going just slightly faster than the individual.

The findings suggest that virtual workout partners could motivate people to meet their exercise goals, the researchers said.

The 58 women in the study were recruited from MSU's physical activity courses. The researchers divided the women into three groups — one group exercised alone, while a second group exercised with virtual partners. The third group exercised together, and each woman was also paired with a virtual friend. Researchers recorded data over six exercise sessions.

Studies have shown that working out in groups yields longer participation; the researchers said they wanted to see if the same logic applied when the "group" was virtual. The results suggested that a virtual group may be effective at persuading people to keep going.

Lack of motivation is a major barrier that prevents people from exercising as much as they should and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, the researchers said.

The study was published online yesterday (May 24) in the journal Annals of Behavioral Medicine.

Living a more spiritual life requires of you to be more open minded. The fact remains that we know very little about the true nature of the world we live in. There are just so many dimensions to life and so many unanswered questions that after 2000 years we are only starting to get a glimpse at the vastness of it all. How can anyone be an optimist in a world that is so rich in unexplored ideas and unanswered questions? How do we really know things are what they are? With an open mind you can start to embrace more of life and in the process you will start to develop a greater sense of awe for life. This is the foundation of having a rich life.

Spirituality has always been at the centre of humankind's quest to know itself - to discover and explore life's most profound quests. Life is not so much an 'either or' as it is an 'as well as' but our conditioning keeps us locked up in our own limiting beliefs. Open your mind and free yourself from the limitations that keep you locked up in your own limitations. An open mind will free that creative force that lies dormant within you. An open mind will help you to create a greater sense of harmony in your life and embrace more of life with a sense of wonder and awe. Free your mind and your spirit will follow.

Kidney Stone Rate Nearly Doubles in 16 Years

Kidney stones are nearly twice as common now as they were in the early 1990s, according to a new study.

In 1994, one in 20 people in the U.S. had kidney stones, in the years between 2007 and 2010, the rate was one in 11.

"While we expected the prevalence of kidney stones to increase, the size of the increase was surprising," says study researcher Dr. Charles Scales Jr., a urologist at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles.

While kidney stones can be treated,they can also be prevented by eating a healthy balanced dietand getting plenty of exercise, researchers said. Doctors should shift their focus to prevention, especially now that more people in the U.S. are facing the condition, researchers said.

"People should consider the increased risk of kidney stones as another reason to maintain a healthy lifestyle and body weight," said researcher Dr. Christopher Saigal, associate professor of urology at the UCLA medical school.

The study used data on 12,000 people collected during the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, an ongoing study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Survey participants answer questionnaires, and undergo physical exams.

The study was released online Wednesday (May 23) and will appear in the July issue of the journal European Urology.

Pass it on: Nearly twice as many people in the U.S. are suffering from kidney stones today, but some could be prevented with proper diet and exercise.

When your meditation practice deepens, you will ! like to sit for longer periods of time, and this can prove to be uncomfortable on your knees and back. A Zafu or chair will go a long way in helping curb this problem. Proper clothing, for similar reasons, is also very helpful. One of the most common complaints in sitting meditation, is that one's legs tend to fall asleep and having proper meditative attire will help prevent this.

A meditation timer is also a must. Once you commit to sitting for a particular period of time, you need to see that through. Early in your practice, the body and mind will greatly dislike being told what to do in this way. They are both used to running the show, and all of a sudden being told to be still and concentrate on a particular thing is going to greatly upset them. The timer should be the only factor determining the end of your meditation session. Until it goes off, you should remain frozen in time and attentive to your practice. The timer will also be of value in helping you gauge your capacity to sit in meditation for long periods of time.

3. Add Inspirational Items: Place items in this location that inspire and uplift you. They can be anything from pictures, idols, symbols to books. You may also wish to keep some incense or a candle handy, as that can greatly enhance the ambiance of a meditative space.

Why is that? How is that only 3% to 5% people become wealthy and live their dreams in the richest country the world has ever known? Why have you gotten what you've gotten in your life? Why have you not gotten more of the things, conditions and circumstances you have wished for?

It really has to do with whether you are mastering your mind power or whether your mind is mastering you and therefore weakening your power in terms of obtaining or achieving more of what you desire.

Essentially, your mind controls everything in your world, including health, happiness, and financial conditions. The conscious portion is primarily a sensation filtering, classifying, recording, analyzing, an! d select ing mechanism. Even though it has no long term memory of its own, it is the gate keeper so to speak, that keeps incongruent thoughts, ideas, and images from entering the unconscious. Whenever new thoughts, images, or ideas seek entry into our minds, they must first past the scrutiny of the conscious mind.

According to U.S. Anderson, author of the book Three Magic Words, "It (the conscious portion of the mind) records sensations at the level of pain and pleasure; it analyzes this sensation according to the circumstances that caused it; and it files such sensation away under one of two main compartments headed 'Recall about Pain' and 'Recall about Pleasure.'"

The unconscious mind is that portion of the mind below the level of conscious perception. Its memory is perfect, and it is the storehouse of every thought, idea, image, sensory perception, and emotion of the individual are indelibly recorded.

You are the most miraculous of all living beings on earth. You are the owner of a mind that is so stupendous, that as you truly begin mastering your mind power and consciously using it, there is no dream that you can dream that you cannot achieve.
