Women who don't take steps to treat a fever during pregnancy may be increasing their risk of having a child with autism or another developmental disorder, a new study suggests.

The children of women who had fevers while pregnant were at twice the risk of other children to develop a developmental problem, the researchers found. However, among women who treated their fevers, the risk of having a child with autism or another developmental disorder was the same as among those who didn't have fevers.

Fevers cause inflammation, and the new finding adds to the evidence that inflammation may affect the development of autism, said study researcher Irva Hertz-Picciotto, a professor of public health at the University of California, Davis.

While the research suggested an association, more work is needed to understand the ways fever and other forms of inflammation during pregnancy may affect a child's development, the researchers said.

The study was one of the first to look at a possible link between pregnant women's fevers and a child's risk of having autism or another developmental disorder, the researchers said. Previous studies have suggested a link between women with obesity or diabetes and the chance of having a child with autism. Fevers cause short-term inflammation, and obesity and diabetes result in long-term inflammation, the researchers said. Together, the findings suggest that inflammation is at work in the development of autism.

When the body fights a fever-causing virus or bacterium, the immune system'swhite blood cells release chemicals called cytokines, and these cause inflammation. Cytokines also could cross into the placenta and affect a fetus's neural development, Hertz-Picciotto said.

"We recommend that pregnant women who develop fever take anti-pyretic medications and seek medical attention if their fever persists," said study researcher Ousseny Zerbo, who was a doctoral student at UC Davis while the study was conducted.

Of the 1,122 children in the study, more than half (538) had autism. Another 163 children had other developmental disorders, and 421 were normally developing children. The participants are involved in larger study aimed at understanding the causes of autism.

The women completed questionnaires about their health during pregnancy when their children were between the ages of 2 and 5.

About one in six U.S. children has a developmental disorder, ranging from mild speech impairments to serious disabilities. The rate of autism is about one in 88, according to the most recent statistics available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While autism can be detected as early as age 2, it also can go undiagnosed for years, the CDC says.

The researchers also found that among women who had the flu during pregnancy, there was no increased risk of having a child with a developmental disorder.

The study was published yesterday (May 23) in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.

Pass it on: Having a fever during pregnancy could double the chances of having an autistic baby, but treating the fever eliminates the risk.

Meditation Stool

Article by Alton Blake

Meditation Stool
I am sure you are aware of just how much meditation can improve both mind and body. However, you may not be aware of the great benefits you can receive from using a simple, traditional meditation stool! As you probably are aware meditation is seen as a mental discipline. However, if you have only started to meditate, or even if you have practised meditation for some time, you will know how difficult it can be to relax your body. The meditation stool was invented in ancient times for several reasons one of which is to relax the body sufficiently to allow the meditator to focus on mental exercises without physical distractions! In order to benefit from the mental exercises involved in meditation it is necessary to first relax the body. Many meditators have trouble with this and it hinders their ability to focus. This is why meditation is considered a mind/body discipline. You must still the body before you can ever still the mind.If you do find it hard to fully and completely relax yourself then a meditation stool should sort out that problem.A meditation stool, designed in the classic fashion, will let you sit in a comfortable position for extended periods of time without gaining any aches, pains or discomfort. The more traditional style of meditation stool offers a lower seated position, close to the floor with no back to the seat. Your legs are positioned under the stool with your knees touching the floor.Even though many "western minds" expect this position to be uncomfortable and hard to get used to it is actually a very well thought out design. Sitting, on a meditation stool, in this positions means you can stay comfortable and relaxed for hours at a time!An added advantage of using a meditation stool lies in its design. Your back is kept straight at all times and this trains you to keep the correct posture. Something that you will carry with you in every day life as well as your meditations. Bad posture can cause a variety of physical complaints and discomforts! so this additional benefit of the meditation stool is worth investing in it alone. For a full listing of high quality, low-priced meditation stools you can visit meditation stool.

Mastering Your Mind Power; No Need To Worry About Failure

Posted: 24 May 2012 09:00 AM PDT

Article by Harold L Lowe

There is no failure gene in your DNA, so there is no need to worry about it. Just imagine, your mind is a goal-seeking, goal-achieving part of you, and it carries out those operations in a machine-like manner. You can never fail in your efforts to master the power of your mind, but you must persist.

Here is why. The portion of your mind that we are referring to here has as its sole responsibility seeking out and achieving the goals you direct it to seek out and achieve. That is all it does, day and night. It never rejects or counters any of your directions.

Please do not confuse the goal-seeking, goal-achieving area of your mind with the self image. This goal-seeking, goal-achieving area never argues whether your directions are for your good or not. It never moralizes your directives to it. It simply accepts your directions, achieves what you direct, and brings it into your physical world.

"If this is true," I hear you ask, "why am I getting so many unwanted things in my experience? Surely I did not direct my mind to bring this stuff to me." I would have to agree with you to a point. You probably did not consciously direct your goal-seeking, goal-achieving mind to bring a shortage of money, illness or other misfortunes into your life.

However, when was the last time you consciously gave ANY directive to your goal-seeking, goal-achieving mind? Do you ever remember doing it? When was the last time you paid conscious attention to what you are consistently thinking all day and all night? Have you ever done such analysis?

If you are like I was and like most people are, you probably have never paid much attention to what you are thinking on a daily basis over an extended period of time. Your mind is likely running on automatic pilot, with the exception of the few times you are shaken into awareness to deal with some urgent matter.

What is your goal-seeking, goal-achieving mind doing when you leave your mind to run on automatic pilot? Well in the absence of your c! onscious ly giving it goals (directions), it simply analyzes its subconscious surroundings for the most emotionally charged goals it has achieved for you before (whether wanted or unwanted).

Whether you previously gave conscious directives to it to materialize those goals is of no importance to it. It selects them, based on your state of being and delivers the associated conditions to you.

There may be hundreds or even thousands of those pre-set conditions in your subconscious mind awaiting a signal to join forces with the goal-seeking, goal-achieving portion of your mind to produce the experiences with which they are associated.

The point of all of this is that you are now in possession of the only fool-proof, fail-safe, and perfect success system in existence, your goal-seeking, goal-achieving mind! Your task, if you choose to accept it, is to clearly communicate to it what you desire to experience.

This I know for sure. You are the most miraculous of all living beings on earth. You are the owner of a mind that is so stupendous, that as you truly begin mastering your mind power and consciously using it, there is no dream that you can dream that you cannot achieve.

Canada Pharmacy Talks about Stressed Parents with Premature Babies

Posted: 24 May 2012 08:00 AM PDT

Article by Remcel Mae Canete

According to a new study supported by a Canada pharmacy when parents of very small premature babies are stressed or depressed, their kids are more likely to cultivate behavioral problems by age 3.

"The psychological well-being of both parents is a significant contributor on the behavioral and emotional development of preterm children," said study lead author Dr. Mira Huhtala, a researcher at Turku University Hospital in Finland. As such, generic Celexa can help parents overcome depression.

"Preemies endure a great deal of stress in the neonatal intensive care unit," noted Dr. Deborah Campbell, director of neonatology at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City. "While it's not clear exactly how that stress might affect a baby," Campbell said "it may cause changes in the developing brain." She said that "preemies also have smaller brain volumes on average, and overall they're just not as developed as they should be."

"At the same time, their parents are incredibly stressed and less resilient. The premature birth of their child may lead to lowered expectations, and they may be overly fearful, which may limit the child's opportunities for normal development," she noted. "If parents are depressed or feeling a sense of loss, they may not engage or connect with the child as well," said Campbell. Then, to buy Celexa may be necessary at such point.

"It's difficult to know how much of behavior is from underlying biology and how much is the influence of the family," she said.

"The more symptoms of poor psychological well-being (depressive symptoms, parenting stress, or weak sense of coherence) the mothers or fathers experienced, the more behavioral problems their children developed as reported by the parents," Huhtala said. "The study showed that not only the psychological well-being of the mothers but also that of the fathers contributes to the behavioral problems of preterm children."

"Still, aggressive behaviors and attention problems tended to be more related to the! mother' s psychological well-being," Huhtala added. "This may be because fathers find it easier to tolerate these kinds of behaviors," she suggested.

Huhtala recommended that "parents seek out psychosocial support if they have trouble coping after having a preterm baby."

"It's important to seek support. If you don't have a family member or friend that you feel you can talk to, talk to your doctor or your child's doctor." She said "it may be harder for men, but it's important to seek help. Many parents who've had a very premature infant basically have post-traumatic stress disorder, and they have to deal with feelings of guilt, and they need to grieve the loss of the life they had imagined for their child."

"The issue of prematurity is often a lifelong process," Campbell said. "Parents may think they've gotten over the worst of it when they get their baby home, but then the child may have problems when school starts. For each issue that comes up, parents have to grieve again," she said.

In humans preterm birth (Latin: partus praetemporaneus or partus praematurus) refers to the birth of a baby of less than 37 weeks gestational age. The cause for preterm birth is in many situations elusive and unknown; many factors appear to be associated with the development of preterm birth, making the reduction of preterm birth a challenging proposition.

Meditation for Health

Posted: 24 May 2012 07:00 AM PDT

Article by Dr. Robert Puff

WHAT MEDITATION ISSimply put, meditation is sitting still and quieting your mind. It is the act of being totally present with "what is," without making mental commentary. When you meditate, you are in the most pristine, natural state of being. In other words, your mind is quiet and you are "just being." Think of meditating as the freedom to "just be." There's no pressure. There are no deadlines. And while there are a lot of different styles of meditation, there's really no right or wrong way to do it. You are simply in a calming, peaceful "state of being." I believe that when you are in this quiet state of mind, you are a human being, instead of a human doing...

While you'll find that meditation is peaceful, it's not exactly peace of mind. However, meditation is freedom from the mind. By that, I mean that during meditation, your mind will be free from your egoic thoughts or mental commentaries. The egoic mind gets conditioned to build up a sort of wall around who you are. Meditation breaks down that wall so that the mental commentary (mind chatter) isn't there. Meditation allows you to say, "Who am I if I am not these thoughts?" This is the most important question on the planet. And it's through meditation that you can ask that all-important question and to go intoyourself for true self-discovery. You see, when you are meditating, you are thought-free, and you lose the sense of fear and desire. If you're in a state of fearing something, then you are in a state of wanting something.

PHYSICAL EFFECTS OF STRESSLet's face it. We're living in very stressful times. If stress is allowed to continue over an extended length of time, the result can be bad for both your mind and your body. Let me give you an analogy to demonstrate this point. Hold out your arm straight at shoulder level. Keeping it in that position probably won't bother you at first, but the longer you hold it there, the more it will hurt. The pain will get worse and worse until you can't stand it any longer. Finally, there will ! be so mu ch pain that you'll have to drop your arm to your side. Stress is likethat. In the beginning, it may not bother you much, but over an extended period of time, it will take a toll on your health, both physically and mentally. Studies show that prolonged stress can weaken the immune system and lead to a plethora of health problems, like high blood pressure, one of the biggest killers on the planet. In fact, studies show that stress-related illnesses account for morethan 60% of all doctor visits in this country. Unfortunately, most people alleviate their stress with things like alcohol, chocolate, or prescription drugs. But simply numbing the pain by depending on one or more of these crutches isn't the long-term answer. Instead, why not practice daily meditation? It has been scientifically documented that meditation lowers blood pressure by allowing you to completely relax your body and clear your mind. Meditation reportedly reduces stress-induced hormones in the blood, alleviating anxiety, anger and many types of illness.

That's right. Meditation can help with illnesses. Scientific studies have shown that meditation not only helps with stress reduction, it can also actually increase physical healing. It has been successfully used to help patients suffering with everything from cat allergies, to heart palpitations, to back pain.

How is this possible? Being in a meditative state increases the amount of endorphins produced by the brain, and it's these endorphins that can assist our bodies in the healing process. These same endorphins make us feel happy and give us a positive, uplifted sensation. I call it the "ultimate natural high!"

Initially, when people begin to meditate, they might not feel much. If this happens to you after a few times of trying to meditate, don't get discouraged. Like everything else, meditation takes practice. And remember, practice makes perfect! Everybody who has meditated consistently for a while will tell you that meditation is very relaxing and peaceful. If you ! practice meditation long enough and regularly enough, that peacefulness will be carried with you throughout the day.

The best way

Posted: 24 May 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Sure, I agree that the food a menu list is not the same as eating real food, or a finger pointing to the moon is not the real moon. And so it goes with books about the Buddha's wisdom. They cannot present actual enlightenment to us even if the words come from the mouth of Gautama.

So what is the best way to deal with this problem? Should we ignore such books and just sit in zazen? But what if doing zazen is like pretending to be sitting in a restaurant believing we just had a great meal or are about to be served?

What if the real goal of Zen is to realize the most fundamental stuff or tathata of the universe from which even our thoughts and emotions are composed which is also pure Mind? How do we go about that? Surely 'just sitting' or shikantaza will not take us there. Posture does not equate with awakening to the most fundamental stuff of the universe. Still, I suppose some Zennists believe that 'sitting Zen' or zazen is the answer.

Zen, itself, or dhyรขna is not the practice of positioning oneself into a sitting posture. Zen has nothing whatsoever to do with sitting upright. Dhyรขna, itself, is about transcending our entire mental life which results in direct union with pure Mind which is radiant and like clear light. For the first time we see that all phenomena, including mental phenomena are dependent originations which depend on pure Mind or tathata. This is the supreme truth, in other words.

On the other hand, if we attach to any mental phenomenon or ritual practice such as zazen or chanting we shall never accomplish the highest dhyรขna. Such practices can deceive us insofar as we believe they will somehow lead to a direct intuition of pure Mind.

Using The Power Of Your Mind To Develop A Financial Success System

Posted: 24 May 2012 07:35 AM PDT

Article by Greg Frost

An effective, well-oiled financial success system is something most people would dream of in their entire life. Like a cash cow, it would keep them rich for many years to come. Yet, how many of us can truly understand that the source of developing such a system lies within ourselves? The fact is that the key to developing a financial success system lies within our mind, or more specifically, the subconscious mind. If you ever wanted to strike it rich, using the power of your mind to develop a financial success system would be something that would come useful to you in the long run.

For starters, it is important to develop a positive attitude towards the concepts of money and wealth. Many people tend to view money and material wealth on negative terms. After all, how many times have you heard parents preaching the aged old saying "money is the root of all evil" to their young ones? However, to have such an attitude would imbue your subconscious with negative affirmations that money is indeed evil. Granted that the subconscious mind can influence the conscious mind, which in turn determines our actions, holding such an unfavorable view of money would result in it never coming to us. We die poor. As such, we should adopt a more positive approach towards money, recognizing that it is only with money that we are able to fund various creations that are ultimately beneficial to us. Doing so would allow our subconscious to act in the reverse manner of what we mentioned earlier. Our subconscious mind would condition our conscious mind, and thus, our actions to attract money. We enjoy abundance in this result through the use of our mind's power.

In addition, it is also important to have clear targets on your financial goals. Such goals should be clear, precise and down to the very detail. Precise goals provide your subconscious with greater focus, preventing you from being distracted by any obstacles that may happen to come between you and your financial goals. This is important as your subcons! cious mi nd needs the necessary positive affirmations and undivided attention from you in order for it to work its magic on your conscious mind and the actions you take.

Finally, it would be a good idea to be surrounded by positive-minded people who have the same goals in you. Without the ability to discern, the subconscious mind is very vulnerable to negative affirmations which might be spread to you by people who are constantly living with negative affirmations in their minds. Comparatively, positive people who have the same goals contribute to positive affirmations within your subconscious. This would in turn allow your subconscious mind to guide your conscious mind in positive ways, ultimately resulting in you taking the right action for financial success.

The key to an effective financial success system lies within the power of your mind. Ability to influence your subconscious mind in positive ways through positive attitudes, goals and people will ultimately allow you to realize your all financial goals in life.

Why Raise Your Consciousness?

Posted: 24 May 2012 05:00 AM PDT

Article by Chance Cole

Many of us want to raise our level of consciousness. Have you ever thought about the reasons why seekers of a higher consciousness are seeking it?

What's the point or the ultimate goal that we hope to achieve from becoming more self-aware? Is it to make more money, get a better job, to improve our moods?

First, let's identify a major difference between people I consider to be unconscious and conscious. Those who are unable to be a witness to their own thoughts and feelings act unconsciously. They respond to their emotions only by instinct. They become trapped in the world of their own thoughts and responses. They are living exclusively "in their head".

Those who act purely from emotion, without even realizing or acknowledging that emotion, are living a somewhat primal life. This is similar to the way an animal reacts in nature. When hungry, animals kill; when irritated, they lash out; when threatened, they fight, etc.

For example, when an unconscious person gets angry, they yell at someone. They don't challenge themselves to sit with the emotion and ask, "Why am I feeling this way? What's really at the root of this emotion I am currently experiencing at this moment?"

Getting to know ourselves and becoming more self-aware means doing some work. It means questioning ourselves about ways of thinking and acting that may be incredibly ingrained in our everyday life patterns. When we take responsibility for our emotions and happiness, we are living more consciously.

When we take the opportunity and time to learn about ourselves, we become happier, and so do the people in our lives. We find that our time is spent more efficiently. Instead of creating drama and brooding over "issues", we spend time on what truly matters. We get a great deal more accomplished, because we put more value on our time when living consciously.

When we are conscious, we seek people and create situations that make us feel great. And in turn, we attract more like-minded people and situati! ons that ultimately bring us good.

I believe we should raise our consciousness foremost because we can. As human beings, we have been endowed with the ability to move above and beyond a primal emotional life. This doesn't make us superior to beautiful plants and animals that cannot do this. We simply have a different genetic makeup.

Our left brain thinking, labeling, blaming, questioning and judging that we experience can be our greatest asset or our greatest downfall. We can choose to "buy in" to all the mind chatter or to be a witness to it and question its truth.

We should raise our consciousness to make ourselves and the people in our lives as happy as possible. Happiness is a different concept for each of us. For some it may come from the ability to quiet our thoughts and worries for the attainment of inner peace. Maybe it's being present and living harmoniously on a daily basis with loved ones. Or perhaps happiness is manifesting dreams and beliefs about what we can personally accomplish.

The great artist Salvador Dali said, "Have no fear of perfection, you'll never reach it." We may not be capable of perfection, but we owe it to ourselves, the people we love, and all of humanity to achieve our highest level of spiritual progress humanly possible.

Spiritual Search Continues On Spirituality

Posted: 24 May 2012 04:00 AM PDT

Article by Tolga Savas

Our spiritual quest to understand the universe we live in, has always been there, it has taken us into space it has taken us to see pictures of planet mars, we have made telescopes to see the further corners of magical and awesome vastness that we call our universe. And our advancements, be it mechanical or technological is not that important from the point of view of the universe we live in. Yet in a most sacred way we are the most important, by being aware of its existence, and because we are conscious of its existence and can contemplate it, with so little understanding. But still this little understanding is far greater than a star or even the Milky Way can do on its own.

The human reasoning that is within every logical being, always questions our origins and our purpose. When we look at the world we live in at the moment, we come to see that we place our purpose to a being that many call God. Our populations ninety five percent of it will agree on this and it makes sense for those who live their lives accordingly to their spiritual institutes' teachings. And when we further look at this from a point of view of the follower be it Buddhist, Islam, Hindu or Christian etc, then we see that all these institutes teach one thing very interesting, to live their journeys with feeling and teachings that is pure in its core, and this purity contains kindness gratitude compassion, all the good qualities that a considerate person should possess. On the same token these institutes produce some elements that really do not understand the teachings; rather they understand it blindly, thus straying from the real point of love and kindness for all.

When many of us humans have faith in a being such as God or Buddha or a supreme being and pray or meditate to it, this then takes away the search for us, gives us a belonging with certainty that we have found what our purpose is, and some people old or young are still searching even the devout follower of a sect, is still searching. Because the light we a! ll searc h for is a growing one. It just gets brighter as we get closer to the truth within our hearts. And that truth many label different yet it is the same. If we were to look at a straight line from the same angle at the same time, then we would all see the same line being straight. Truth cannot be bent. Yet we all have different meaning for it. Which ever makes sense the most, is followed. Exuberance is a good stimulus towards action, but the inner light grows in silence and concentration. When we follow the nature and the nature of things, then the eternal question arises, why? And the answer brings no illumination unless the question has matured to a point where it gives rise to this answer. And then the answer becomes questions fruit.

If we are really intended to find out or concerned with the whole business of our existence then we must remember to learn for ourselves whether there is that being called God, the force beyond all our reason, beyond time and space, beyond what our eyes can see when we stare at the magical nights sky. And some of us really value and place much importance to this universal question of, belonging to it, and learning about it. And that gives depth to life itself and depth to experiencing the sacredness, wholeness, and oneness, completeness. And we are individual in our search, individual sparks, individual lights, and the guardians of our own unique sacredness in our feelings, in our hearts. It is only when we all come together in unity and kindness and compassion and embrace each other. We must not blame our misunderstandings on others.

Then we realize that our purpose is to live in unity, compassion for Love and Beauty and Trust.

Mind Power Seduction Techniques

Posted: 24 May 2012 03:00 AM PDT

Article by Greg Frost

Mind power seduction involves the use of the mind's inherent powers to generate attraction between people. Unknown to most people, the human mind consists of both the conscious and subconscious mind. At any point in time, it is said that a human being uses no more than ten percent of his total mental capacity. Mind power seduction techniques stem from utilizing the forgotten ninety percent of the human mind, often referred to as the subconscious mind. Mastering the technique of mind power seduction involves utilizing different methods to align this part of your mind towards your success. Eliminate all fears of not being able to get hitched!

One of the best techniques to effective mind power seduction would be achieving perfect inner peace within yourself when interacting with someone you're interested in. Often, the primary factor behind ruining things is nervousness. Most women do not find men who are uptight and frigid to be attractive. You do not need to change yourself to be relaxed. Just work on your subconscious by telling yourself that this person whom you are meeting is just a normal person. Subsequently, your subconscious mind will condition itself accordingly and you will be relaxed when your conscious mind receives this message from your subconscious and puts it into action. Most women would prefer men to behave naturally when interacting with them as it exudes a sense of confidence. Achieving that with your mind power will in turn increase your seduction abilities.

Additionally, you have to be focused on what you want to achieve by the end of the interaction session. Make such goals specific and detailed. This would allow you to condition your subconscious mind towards your success. Remember your subconscious mind does not have the ability to differentiate between what makes sense and what does not. However, it does affect your conscious mind, which would in turn determine the ultimate course of action taken by yourself at the end of the day. Better still write down such go! als in c ase you may lose focus of yourself from time to time. Remember, you have to be focused on who and what you want in order for you to better grasp the art of seduction.

Lastly, have a correct attitude. Possessing an outwardly strong self, but in actual fact, having self-defeatist thoughts from the start, will only be a recipe for failure. Never doubt your own abilities. Instead of telling yourself that "I might be able to do it", tell yourself that "I must do it". In terms of outlook, the key is to portray a fearless self, not an arrogant or shy self. In most cases, it is the dash and daring fearless nature of a man that tends to captivate the hearts of women.

Rounding off, your subconscious mind can be a wonderful ally for you. When used properly, mind power seduction techniques can be used to dramatically increase your appeal towards the person whom you desire. Thus, if you one of those swinging singles out there, its time to give mind power seduction techniques a try.

Conscious Dating Works for Twice-Divorced Author

Posted: 24 May 2012 02:00 AM PDT

Article by David Steele

As the author of Conscious Dating and founder of Relationship Coaching Institute I'm excited to share that this year I met my soul mate, Darlene, and we are engaged to be married!

If you're a reader of Conscious Dating you know that I've been married and divorced twice. I thought I met my soul mate (Maggie), but that relationship ended after 5 years. Since then I've done a lot of soul searching and focused on living the life I want while continuing to date around, this time with more consciousness of how I tend to settle and determined to find what I really want in a partner and relationship.

After Maggie I met a wonderful woman (Susan) who seemed aligned with everything I was seeking. We had a lot of fun together, shared many values and goals, yet something held me back. Though close, this relationship wasn't "the whole package" for me. I was seeking a deep emotional and spiritual connection that I did not experience with Susan. I broke off the relationship August 2007 and posted my profile on several internet matchmaking websites determined to find my soul mate or be alone.

December 2007 I received a match online that proved to be my soul mate. Darlene's photo and profile was pretty ordinary, but there was something unexplainable about her that excited me and compelled me to contact her. Our first two meetings were very positive, but routine as first dates go... coffee, then lunch, but something powerful was drawing me to her that I didn't understand. After studying dating and practicing it myself for years, this was new territory for me!

Then, after our third meeting we hugged goodbye and it was all over for me. I was in love. I had insomnia that night and couldn't sleep the next night as well. We had arranged to get together later that week on Sunday, and Darlene contacted me to find out if I could get together on Saturday as she didn't want to wait until Sunday. So she was feeling it too! We ended up talking for 5 hours about our Vision, Requirements, Needs and Wants, ! and our alignment was amazing. Our chemistry, emotional and spiritual connection was so overwhelming it was wonderful and almost too much to bear.

We've been inseparable since, and six weeks after becoming a couple we went to Carmel for the weekend, found a beautiful ring, and got engaged. Our wedding date is set for September 27, 2008.

I'm happier than I've ever been in my life. My kids love her, her family likes me, the fit all around is like we were meant to be together. We are true Soul Mates in every sense of the word. I yearned to find her for many years, knew she was out there, and now I feel like I am "home."

My wish for all singles and the message of Conscious Dating is that finding your soul mate really CAN happen for you if you're clear about who you are, what you want, become ready and available, use the Law of Attraction, don't settle for less, and go after what you REALLY want.

How Are Yoga and Pilates Different?

Posted: 24 May 2012 01:00 AM PDT

Article by Jessica Fousterson

To many people, yoga and Pilates seem like the same thing. The two systems are actually quite different, however.

Yoga is more holistic while putting emphasis on ancient teachings and static poses. Pilates requires that you strengthen your stabilizer muscles and emphasize building strength over flexibility, yet enhances both. These exercises were designed to help build mental focus while training the body. Both focus on overall body strengthening and can also help build discipline.

About Yoga:Yoga is able to not only work out the various muscle groups of the body but can also help deal with stress. In addition, this regimen will help unify the spiritual bond between your body and mind. These exercises are part of a lifestyle that uses teachings from a philosophical school in India to help unify the body and soul. The teachings are meant to connect your body, mind, and soul into a workout routine that puts emphasis on stature poses that help purify the body for meditation. Stretching and moving into poses constitute a large part of this system. These exercises are combined with meditation to help relieve stress and promote general well-being.

About Pilates:Pilates exercises focus on working out the core muscles of the body. These muscles include the abdominals, legs, and the lower back muscles. These exercises also focus on toning and strengthening the arms, chest, and buttocks. The exercises that used during this training are meant to improve stability, flexibility, and control of your body while improving focus and concentration. These workouts require extreme focus and require extra equipment such as boxes, mats, weights, and mini trampolines. The mental approach is not as spiritual but does help you increase discipline and strength through a system of various exercises.

If you are looking to cleanse your mind and physical benefits, you should try yoga. Pilates, on the other hand, removes the spiritual teachings and may be better if you are only interested in a good physi! cal work out, without the spiritual aspect. These two systems can offer a variety of benefits from both the mental and physical standpoint. The choice on which system suits you best is entirely up to you.

You Yoga And Meditation

Posted: 24 May 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Article by Noel Halpin

If one unites these three exceptional forces together, it becomes more powerful than any known power to mankind, to achieve a state of purity of the soul and a stillness of the mind is the holy grail of all mystics. It is nirvana to the initiated. The major question is, can ordinary people attain this state?

The answer is yes but, it is not necessary for one to achieve this state of mind, every yoga practitioner sets out their own personal goals.

Whether it is to become healthier, fitter, or more self confident, or maybe just to keep an interest in exercising after reaching a certain age where it is not possible to continue with previous more robust training.

Because yoga is so versatile in all it's movements, not even the elderly or infirm are precluded from taking part in some form or other of yoga practice. It is advisable though to seek professional medical knowledge about certain sickness or infirmity one might have before taking up the practice of yoga.

Yoga and meditation go hand in hand. It is all part of the one rope with many strings, and only when all the strings are joined together, does the rope become stronger and unbreakable, only then does one become whole and the mind and body are united as one.

For meditation to be really effective, one must practice the method diligently and daily. It is only through training the mind to accept closure on all things that are depressive and negative, to how one should be in the quest to reach a better level of health, fitness and more understanding in the motivation of ones life.

In today's modern world it is so easy to lose touch with ourselves.

We become consumed with other peoples targets and goals, that our own life becomes owned by outsiders, who only want to use us and then discard us when we no longer fill their needs.

Each and every one of us are put on this world for a particular purpose, and that purpose is to be the very best WE can be.

That does not include being slaves to other pe! ople, we should never be slaves to anyone, not even ourselves.

The most effective way to avoid all these pitfalls of negativity and depression is to start focusing on the person who really matters and that is ourselves.

We can begin our new focusing right now by starting a yoga and meditation program with only one aim in mind, finding our inner peace, where our whole attitude changes to one not of negativity, but to one of self confidence, and motivation to becoming a whole self fulfilled person.

Once we begin to feel this change so also will one feel the power of life and the force of achievement. Remember we are the rope that has many strands and though, right now they are disjointed, we and only we have the power to unite them all, this is and always will be our challenge, our destiny.

Beijing Travel – Lama Temple

Posted: 23 May 2012 11:00 PM PDT

Article by Brendon

Lama Temple is a Buddhist Temple of the Geluk school of Tibetan Buddhism in the suburbs of Beijing. Lama Temple is the largest temple for lamas in China and one of the largest and most important Buddhist monasteries in the world.

While walking through the grounds of Lama Temple you will see extraordinary examples of centuries old architecture and the active practice of an ancient and fascinating religion. Though not in the same class as the more famous sites like the Forbidden City and Summer Palace, the Lama Temple is a great travel spot to visit and I really enjoyed wandering the temple grounds and experiencing the practice of Buddhism there.

History

The original temple structures were built in 1694 as the residence of crown prince Yong of the Qing Dynasty. After ascending to the throne in 1722, Emperor Yong changed the status of his old residence to a temporary palace called Yonghegong which means palace of harmony and peace. Emperor Yong's successor Emperor Qianlong made the palace into a lama temple in 1744.

Large numbers of Tibetan Buddhist monks from both Tibet and Mongolia resided in the temple which became the national center for lama administration in China. The temple was closed during the cultural revolution but not destroyed. Apparently prime minister Zhou Enlai who was responsible for saving many of China's religious sites from destruction by the Red Guard during that period also saved the Lama Temple. The temple was later reopened to the public in 1981.

Grounds and Layout

The temple was built along a central north-south axis and holds at least 32 major halls and buildings spread out over four main areas. The halls and buildings of the temple contain man Buddha statues, Tang-ga (scrolled paintings) and precious cultural relics that are all on display. The three most famous relics are the Niche of Buddha, the 500 Arhat Mountain and the 18 meter high Buddha.

There are way too many buildings and halls too go over them all so I have described bel! ow the m ain buildings and the ones you are most likely to see when you visit the temple. The four main areas of the temple are listed according to their position along the temple's north south axis

First area includes the Yonghe Gate Hall, West Pavilion and East Pavilion

Yonghe Gate Hall - This hall was originally the main entrance to the temple and holds a statue of a seated Buddha called the big belly Maitreya. The hall also holds four statues of heavenly kings, two on the left and two on the right so it is also called the Hall of Heavenly Kings.

East & West Pavilions - Were both built in 1744 and contain a stela of white marble with inscriptions in Mongolian and Tibetan explaining why Yonghegong was made into a lamasery.

The second area includes the Four Language Stele Pavilion, Yonghegong Hall and an ancient copper cooking vessel.

Cooking Vessel - After you step through the Yonghe Gate Hall into the second area, the first structure you'll see is a 1747 Qing Dynasty black copper cooking vessel mounted on a white marble stone that is decorated with dragons and lions and has six doorways in the upper part. Apparently this cooking vessel can bring good fortune and there is a constant stream of Chinese tourists who are trying to throw coins and notes through the cracks in the vessel and the 6 doors that are covered by a wire mesh.

Four Language Stele - This is a small building containing stele with the words of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty describing the origin and mean of the Buddhist lamas in four languages.

Yonghegong Hall - This is supposed to be the main hall of Lama Temple but personally I think the Falun Hall is more deserving of this title. This hall contains three bronze statues that are the three aspects of Buddha, Kasyapa-matanga on the right, Sakyamuni in the middle and Maitreya on the left. The left and right sides of the hall each hold 9 sitting statues of Buddha's disciples called Arhats.

Third Main Area has only one major building, the Fa! lun Hall

Falun Hall - The focus of this building is a large seated statue of Tsong Kha Pa who was a founder of the Buddhist lama beliefs. This hall is used for reading scriptures and holds rows and rows of reading desks and electric lamps.

Fourth Main Area has one main building, the Wangfuge Pavilion that is linked by bridges to two smaller buildings on either side of it.

Wanfuge Pavilion - This building is just incredible and easily my favourite of all the buildings in Lama Temple. The building has three floors and is basically an empty shell with the core or atrium built around a 26 meter statue of the Maitreya Buddha. 8 meters of the statue is sunk into the ground with 18 meters above the ground. The actual building was built around the statue and galleries on the second and third floor on the inside of the building completely encircle the statue. Apart from the statue and a large area for prayer in front on the statue, the building is empty. It is very easy to imagine all the galleries and the prayer area full of monks in prayer and chanting sutras to Maitreya.

The statue itself is carved out of a single piece of white sandal wood that was donated to Emperor Qianlong by the Seventh Dalai Lama to express thanks for the services that the emperor had rendered to Tibet. Shipping the wood took three years from the Yangtze River up the Grand Canal to Beijing and another three years for the carving and erection. Lama Temple was converted to a lamasery in 1744 but the Wanfuge Pavilion was not finished until 1750 when the carving of the statue was complete.

Just walking into the pavilion and looking up at the head of the statue as it towers over you and seeing the galleries that circle around the statue is a breathtaking experience. Seeing the Wanfuge Pavilion alone makes a trip to the Lama Temple an enjoyable and worthwhile experience.

Yansui and Yongkang Pavilions - These are small pavilions on the left and right of Wanfuge Pavilion and are connected to Wanfuge Pavilion by bridge! s on the second floor. The architecture on all thee pavilions and the connecting bridges excellent.

Getting There

Take the subway to Yonghegong which is at the intersection of subway lines 5 and lines 2. Leave the station using the C exit, turn left and the entrance to the temple will be several hundred meters south down the road.

Both sides of the road are filled with shops selling Buddhist goods such as incense for visitors to the temple so you will know when you are getting close to the temple entrance.

Tickets & Times

Tickets are 25rmb and the temple is open from 9:00am to 5:00pm

Try to be at the temple by12 at the latest and leave yourself two hours to enjoy wandering through the temple grounds and admiring the buildings. Tour buses start to pour in in large numbers at around 2:30pm so best to be out of the temple by then.

Sam Harris interview with author of "Illusion of the Self"

Posted: 23 May 2012 11:00 PM PDT

Damn! (but actually I'm happy)

Another $ 19.57 has found its way from my VISA account into Amazon's accounts receivable, thanks to Sam Harris' interview with the author of Illusion of the Self -- another neuroscience book that the "I" who isn't me was led to order by largely unconscious brain processes over which the "I" who isn't me has no control.

If you're interested in this stuff, but not twenty bucks worth of interested, it'll cost you nothing to read the interview.

I'm fascinated by the increasingly evident neuroscientific conclusion that there's no such thing as a Self to be found within the human cranium. Buddhism and other like-minded philosophies are being proven right, yet also wrong.

Meaning, since we humans don't have a Self, there's no need to undergo an arduous enlightenment process aimed at understanding that we don't have one. Also, there's no need to engage in a pursuit of Self-Realization, since there's no Self to realize.

Here's some excerpts from the interview:

In what sense is the self an illusion?

For me, an illusion is a subjective experience that is not what it seems. Illusions are experiences in the mind, but they are not out there in nature. Rather, they are events generated by the brain. Most of us have an experience of a self. I certainly have one, and I do not doubt that others do as well – an autonomous individual with a coherent identity and sense of free will. But that experience is an illusion – it does not exist independently of the person having the experience, and it is certainly not what it seems. That's not to say that the illusion is pointless. Experiencing a self illusion may have tangible functional benefits in the way we think and act, but that does not mean that it exists as an entity.

...Answering the question of who is experiencing the illusion or interpreting the story is much more problematic. This is partly a conceptual problem and partly a problem of dualism. It is almost impossible to discuss the self without a referent in the same way that is difficult to think about a play without any players. Second, as the philosopher Gilbert Ryle pointed out, in searching for the self, one cannot simultaneously be the hunter and the hunted, and I think that is a dualistic problem if we think we can objectively examine our own minds independently, because our mind and self are both generated by the brain. So while the self illusion suggests an illogical tautology, I think this is only a superficial problem.

4 Mind Control Tricks for Success

Posted: 23 May 2012 09:00 PM PDT

Mindfulness
by RubyJi

Article by Greg Frost

Mind control tricks often conjure negative images of people who achieve their goals at the expense of others through the use of techniques such as hypnosis. Such a judgment of mind control tricks is in many cases a sweeping statement and is untrue. In any case, the mind is an extremely powerful tool. According to Einstein, most human being use no more than 10% of his or her brain at any point in time throughout his or her lifetime. In this respect, mind control tricks can be used to develop success for you in life by allowing you to gain control and make better use of that unutilized 90% of your brain.

One of the most popular mind control tricks would be self hypnosis. This method of hypnosis is used to reprogram the brain with the subconscious mind and should be done positively to generate positive affirmations towards your subconscious mind. What we mean here is to make use of positive thoughts and emotions in order to program your subconscious mind in positive ways. This could be done through either a home-made hypnosis method or the purchase of a hypnosis CD available on the internet. For the former, relaxation and focus is the key as you speak and write positive affirmations in present tense. For the latter, follow the instructions in the CD. Generally it is recommended that you listen to such CDs in a relaxing environment which would allow you to keep your full attention on the hypnosis process.

Another helpful trick that is suitable especially for people who have plenty to remember in their day to day activities would be the use of mnemonics. This is a useful technique of memory retention and can take the form of either pictures, words or other similar associations. Using the first alphabet of each task to form a word can also be done for people who have many things to remember. Such methods are vital when you are caught with a situation where you do not have the ability to jot down the numerous tasks awaiting you.

A third way of controlling your mind to allow you to ach! ieve mor e in your life would be through the use of visualizations. Instead of sitting there and whining at the job, relax and feel yourself go through the entire process of the job right up to the stage of completion. Savor the satisfaction when you get the job done. Your visualization should be done in great detail including the materials and people whom you will need to get the job done. Thereafter, sit up and do the job the way you did it in your mind. You will find that doing the job is no longer as painful as before. At the same time, your visualization of success will only align your subconscious mind towards this direction. The resultant effect would be that your conscious mind takes the necessary actions that will get you to success.

Lastly, it would be a good idea to identify thoughts that distract you. Distracting thoughts often have the tendency to disrupt control of your mind. Getting rid of such thoughts would allow you to work on your subconscious mind in positive ways allowing you to get more in life.

Contrary to what most believe, mind control tricks are by no means mere evil tools used by people who want to manipulate others. When used correctly, it can be a powerful self-help tool for greater success in life.

Learning Meditation Can Bring you A Healthly Life

Posted: 23 May 2012 07:00 PM PDT

Article by Sal Pou

Meditation can either be on an object, or otherwise, can be objectless. In the initial stages, it is easier if you start by concentrating your mind on a selected object. Meditation is a three step process that leads to a state of consciousness that brings serenity, clarity, and bliss. As depicted in the first illustration, our "normal" state of mind is actually quite abnormal. Meditation can also give many other benefits.

Meditation, however, seems to be able to increase our minds' attentional bandwidth. In other words people were capable of processing information more quickly and accurately. Meditation is integral to Buddhism but it can be practiced religion-free for relaxation, stress relief, to regulate sleep, emotional balance, and overal grooviness. I truly believe that if more of us meditated the world would be better place. Meditation helps us reach a state of balance.

Meditation is one of the best methods to bring about transformation and nurture the natural qualities within. Meditation, however, differs from deep sleep, for it works profound changes in the psyche. By curbing and stilling the oscillations of the mind, meditation brings mental peace. Meditation of one style or another can be found in most of the major religions, including Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam. Generally, Eastern religions have tended to concentrate on meditation as a means of realising spiritual enlightenment.

Meditation is frequently confused with various forms of concentration. The purpose of concentration exercises is to focus our full undivided attention on a specific aspect of functioning of our mind and/or the body in order to accomplish a certain goal or develop a certain skill. Meditation for Health, however, is a secular medical program. We teach mindfulness as a basic awareness practice, a way of looking at things, to be shared by people of all faiths and philosophies. Meditation is one of several relaxation methods evaluated and found to be of possible benefit by an indepen! dent pan el convened by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The panel found that it might be a useful complementary therapy for treating chronic pain and sleeping problems such as insomnia.

Meditation itself is not about concentration, effort, or endurance. It is effortless, refreshing and renewing. Meditation is a journey to the center of our very being; a journey to emotional freedom; and a journey to the reawakening of our unconditioned self. Meditation is a practical matter: increased awareness brings an ability to make the most of ourselves in our daily lives.

Meditation can also be objectless, for example consisting of just sitting. Experiences during meditation probably vary significantly from one individual to another, or at least if different techniques are involved. Meditation, of course, has been practiced in India for centuries. Many know of TM because of the Beatles and other celebrities like Mia Farrow and Donovan, who hung out at Mahesh's ashram in the 1960s and '70s. Meditation can do that for you, and much more. The benefits were there, of course, before science proved them, and now you can keep up on the science and the experience with the Meditation Newsletter.

Instant Answers on How to Deal With Stress

Posted: 23 May 2012 06:00 PM PDT

Article by Carole Spiers

Over the past year, many readers have written to ask me various questions regarding the best way to manage stress, so I thought it would be a good idea to share some of these with you.

Q: What is stress?A: Stress is the adverse reaction that people have to excess pressure or other types of demands placed on them. It arises when they perceive that they are unable to cope with those demands

Q: Is stress good for me?A: No. It is often mistakenly thought that stress is good for people, when in fact, long-term stress is invariably harmful. A certain amount of pressure can indeed motivate and can therefore be useful, but stress is never so.

Q: Can stress seen as a weakness - particularly in industry?A: Yes. If an individual works in an organisation, where for example, there is the possibility of imminent redundancies, he/she may seek to cover up any signs of stress in the belief that they may be regarded as unable to cope with their job and might be regarded as dispensable.

Q: How do I recognise stress in myself?A: Depending on the individual, stress can manifest itself in different ways including heart palpitations, mood swings, panic attacks, over-dependence on caffeine, anxiety, loss of confidence, aggressiveness, headaches, poor time management and lack of concentration.

Q: Why do we become stressed?A: Fundamentally, it is the way that you think about a situation rather than the situation itself that causes stress. Problems occur when the pressure you are under seems to be overwhelming or out of your control.

Q: I feel that my workload is too much for me What can I do about this?A: First of all, you need to be very clear as to whether your workload is too great or if you have received insufficient training to carry it out. If it is a case of too much to do in too little time, then you need to talk to your boss and discuss it clearly.

Q: What is the importance of support network to me at times of stress?A: It is important to be aware that coping with stres! s can be made demonstrably easier with the support from colleagues, family or friends. Strong and caring friendships are an essential benefit in helping you to learn how to cope with pressure and to counteract stress.

Q: What are the early warning signs of stress in my team?A: Here are some key indicators: • Unexplained absenteeism • Reduced work performance • Loss of concentration • Increased work errors • Poor timekeeping • Irritability or aggression

Q: What are some of the common causes of work-related stress?A: Poor management and insufficient training combined with a lack of communication, are three primary causes.

Q: At my last performance review, I was told I had to improve my management style. Can you point me in the right direction to avoid my losing my job?A: Effective people management is a skill that many managers find difficult so you are not alone. It is, however, an essential skill if you are to lead your team with confidence. The following tips should help you:• Promote a 'can do' attitude in a realistic way. • Encourage individuals to come up with ideas on how they may be better able to achieve targets.• Facilitate feedback. Individuals appreciate the chance to say how they perceive both you, as their manager, and their job. • Be approachable and available.

Q: Would being more assertive help my stress levels??A: Many people find it very difficult to say 'no!'. They put themselves in invidious situations by accepting additional work or tasks when they have, in reality, insufficient resources to complete them. The consequences are often disappointment in themselves and others that invariably leads to both physical and psychological stress, and a reduction in self-esteem and self-image.

Q: Why is exercise good to beat stress?A: Exercise reduces muscle tension and uses up adrenalin and energy released by the body's 'fight or flight' response.

12 Symptoms of a Spiritual Awakening

Posted: 23 May 2012 06:00 PM PDT

This morning I came across 12 Symptoms of a Spiritual Awakening on a friend's Facebook feed. I liked them, even though I noticed that they came from a recovery web site.

No mention of a higher power or God in the twelve, thankfully.

1. An increased tendency to let things happen rather than make them happen.

2. Frequent attacks of smiling.

3. Feelings of being connected with others and nature.

4. Frequent overwhelming episodes of appreciation.

5. A tendency to think and act spontaneously rather than from fears based on past experience.

6. An unmistakable ability to enjoy each moment.

7. A loss of ability to worry.

8. A loss of interest in conflict.

9. A loss of interest in interpreting the actions of others.

10. A loss of interest in judging others.

11. A loss of interest in judging self.

12. Gaining the ability to love without expecting anything in return.

Here's a graphic version:

What we have to do is being conscious of the difference in ourselves and others

Posted: 23 May 2012 05:00 PM PDT

Article by Jim Lim

What we have to do is being conscious of the difference in ourselves and others

When we get into intimate relationships and find that "perfect soul mate," we expect that our partner will be like-minded, have similar views, like to do the same things, have the same views on raising children, and the same ideas about spending money.

The reality is that we are each separate individuals, with different backgrounds, belief systems, and emotional patterns. In an issue of "Modern Maturity" magazine, an article highlighting inter-racial, inter-generational, and inter-cultural relationships caught our attention. Since there's a 16 year difference in our ages, this article really spoke to us.

In this article, John Gottman, author of several relationship books, said, "We often expect our mate to understand and meet our expectations. If that doesn't happen, we feel he/she must not love us enough, or is intentionally being hurtful." The point is that your mate is just coming from another point of view. He goes on to say that because "inter" couples "often enter marriage with a more conscious awareness of the cultural, age or racial differences between them; they're more likely to address these issues by talking openly about them."

This openness from the beginning of the relationship helps to depersonalize the conflicts and eliminate the hurt feelings that often arise when differences surface. People tend to believe that if they have the same spiritual beliefs, grow up in the same community, got to the same schools, have the same family background, or like bowling, golf or dancing, they will always think alike and the differences between them won't be great. The fact is that you can grow up next door to someone, be the same age, go to the same schools but have dramatically different cultural, philosophical and personal viewpoints and belief systems.

The "inter" couples in the article said that when there are apparent differences in ideology, culture, race, age, religion, and thos! e differ ences stand out quickly, forcing you to deal with them up front. We've all heard people say "What happened to the person I married?" The truth is that more likely than not the differences were there all the time and was just finally coming to the surface. It seems like such a shock to you that you have these differences that you start doubting the wisdom of your choice to be in a relationship with this person who is so "unlike" you.

This concept is illustrated in Steven Covey's story about the man and the optometrist. Imagine if you would sit across from your optometrist. You are handed his/her eyeglasses and told to try those on. When you tell your doctor that you can't see a thing, the optometrist says, "I don't know why--they've worked well for me all these years. I can see perfectly fine with them!"

Isn't that what happens when we don't accept that our intimate mate might come from another frame of reference, separate from ours, on a particular topic? You expect that someone else's lenses will work for you and when they don't, you are surprised and sometimes angry. If you really want intimate, connected relationships, you have to understand and respect the "glasses" that your mate uses to see life, while honouring and sharing your own "pair of glasses." We've found that expecting that there will be differences, listening without interrupting, and then speaking freely without fear are key elements to working through the differences that arise between us.

The first step to healing anything in your life is through awareness, if you are feeling separation or distance from your mate or anyone in your life, try looking at the issue from the frame of reference through which the other sees life. Habit 5 of Stephen Covey's 7 Habits says, "Seek first to understand then be understood." When you do that, it's very difficult to be angry with that other person and can be the beginning of a deeper connection.

Indeed, life is short. Don't let another day go by without taking a chance on happ! iness. Y ou will never know until you try, so remember to make a move today. It can change or affect the rest of your life, therefore, at the very least, you can try to come out something for your ex love partner during your weekend plans. With a little practice, perseverance and patience, I believe that your relationship could be enhanced with the tips that I have shared earlier. If you have faced any problems with your loved ones, do not hesitate to visit this piece of article again. I really have a strong belief that if you can understand what I have explained and applied what you have learnt from this piece of article, your problems can be eventually solved and your making up relationship can become more stable and stronger. I wish all the best for your making up relationship with your partner. Do always remember to spread word of mouth to your fellow friends for supporting the decision of having making up than breaking up.
