Fire on The Mountain (Part 6)

Fire on the Mountain: A Gathering of Shamans INTRODUCTION; This is a documentary about the connection between consciouness and nature, as embodied in the spiritual traditions of Indigenous Peoples, whose ecological metaphors of the sacred are so relevant to the modern world. We shot the project in 1997 at an historic 10-day gathering of shamans from five continents, who travelled to Karma Ling, a Tibetan Buddhist retreat centre in the Val Saint Hugon in Savoy, in the French Alps, to discuss their concerns with HH the Dalai Lama and high-level representatives of the world's religions. This documentary embodies the wish of these Indigenous People - all traditional wisdom-keepers, shamans and medicine-women - who requested us to communicate their message to the world. The film was co-executive produced by Michael O'Callaghan, President of Global Vision Corporation in London, and Sheldon Rochlin, President of Mystic Fire Video in New York. It was produced and directed by the award-winning filmmaker David Cherniack in Toronto, Canada. A producer at the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) since 1980, his many documentaries include "Heart of Tibet: An Intimate Portrait of the Dalai Lama", and "Four Noble Truths" (narrated by Richard Gere). Can Antioxidants Really Improve Your Health?

"The Healthy Geezer" answers questions about health and aging in his weekly column.

Question: What are antioxidants and how do they contribute to good health?

Answer: As you process food, you make substances called "free radicals," which are believed to contribute to aging and certain diseases. To neutralize free radicals, your body uses antioxidants that come from your food. Proponents believe that antioxidants can prevent chronic diseases.

The following are some antioxidants: vitamin A, vitamin B-6, vitamin B-12, vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene, folic acid and selenium.

The best way to give your body the antioxidants it needs is to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables. There's no proof that antioxidants in pill form can improve your general health or extend your life.

Talk to your doctor before taking any supplement. Ingredients in supplements can cause harmful interactions with your medications and serious side effects.

In addition to eating a varied diet, try the following for attaining good health:

  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Exercise daily
  • Go to the doctor when you're sick
  • Go to the doctor when you're well to get screened for disease.
  • Don't smoke
  • Use sunscreen
  • Stay close to your friends and family

Consciously Use the Law of Attraction

Posted: 29 May 2012 11:00 AM PDT

Article by Richard Blackstone

Using the law of attraction consciously is the secret to creating the life of your dreams. It has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with spirituality information. Use your spiritual growth concerning the importance of your thoughts.

Are you beginning to see how powerful your thoughts are? Do you see the importance of monitoring your thoughts? The only way to do that is to be conscious of what you are thinking and understand the relationship that what you put your attention on determines what kind of thoughts you attract. This cause and effect relationship is a pretty simple concept.

The key is to be consciously aware of what you are placing your attention on. You need to wake up to the fact that you, either your ego or your sacred self, are the determining factor in what you choose that is important enough in your life that you place enough of your attention on it to draw to you by thinking thoughts about it, which allow you to choose to pursue those thoughts and thereby manifest in your reality whatever it is that is important to you. What is important to you? Have you really thought about that? Think about it. If you put your attention on this question, you will begin receiving thoughts about it. So if you desire to start this process, you should put yourself in an environment that will not distract you from the purpose you intended. To consciously determine what is important to you. The key word here is "consciously."You need a quiet place with no distractions. You need to set aside a reasonable amount of time for this process. Remember we are talking about what is important to you. Theoretically, what you seek is a framework of the ideals and concepts that are important to you. Don't worry about the people, places and things that are important to you. You can plug these in later once you have developed the life that you envision through this framework of ideas and concepts.Once again this is a process. You can't just sit down and whip out what is important to you, w! rite it down, put it in the desk and never look at it again. This is going to take conscious, concerted effort. This may seem hard in the beginning but it will make your life easier in the end. Is that worth it to you? Is it worth it to put out a little effort in order to reap the rewards of a happy, effortless life? It's your choice. Nobody is going to make you do this. In fact nobody is going to even know that you have done this except you. That's what this exercise and this article and this life is all about. It's about you. You are the bottom line in this equation because you are the only one who determines and creates every facet of your life lived. Here's the deal. Every facet of your life lived influences every thing in the universe. Everything that you choose to create influences the universal mind because the universal mind is influenced by what you put your attention on and choose to pursue. It is universal. It is part of everyone and everything. We are all one with the universal intelligence that we know of as the source from which all things exist. So you see, this exercise is not only important for you but it is also important for everything in the universe. You are the key to humanity in every thought that you choose to pursue that defines who you determine yourself to be. Humbling, yet exalting. And that is as it should be. Living within the dichotomy of Godness.Okay, so you have a quiet place where you can think about what is important to you. Get yourself a pen and paper because you need to record these priorities so you can check your progress in attaining these goals. Now just take some time and start thinking about what is important in your life and begin to take an inventory of your innermost aspirations. What you need to focus on is what states of beingness best declare who and what you are.Don't focus on having a new car or some fancy stereo equipment but instead focus on "being abundant." By "being abundant" you transcend the short sighted goals of owning this or that material possession by a! ttaining a state of beingness that includes all the goods that you may desire. What you need to focus on is your beingness. Who are you? Who do you desire to be? Is the person that you define yourself as right now being the person that you truly desire to be? What states to beingness do you need to reduce or eliminate in order to become who you truly desire to be? What states of beingness do you need to assume or accentuate in order to become who you truly desire to be?

Now focus on these states of being and see what serves you and what does not serve you..

The Rainbow Serpent: Dawn of the New Age Beyond 2012

The Rainbow Serpent is a powerful and ancient energy current that travels around the world from Uluru (Ayres Rock, Australia) linking Planetary Chakras. The Aborigines knew this serpent well, their age old stories tell of two serpents; a female snake Kuniya and her nephew Liru, who meet at Uluru. The Rainbow Serpent feature documentary encompasses one man's five year pilgrimage. Join Tor Webster in his travels around the earth's chakra points, communicating and exploring global unity consciousness and discussing spirituality with tribal elders and sacred rites with the local spiritual communities. Gaia's energy system is remarkably similar to our own with our connection to the earth far greater than we realize, WE are the awareness of the planet and its only hope of salvation. Linking the myths and legends from all over the planet, we find a deep culture that has been lost to the sands of time. This film aims to inspire people to travel consciously around the world and into their own hearts.

The Tiny Guide to Creating the Flossing Habit

Posted: 29 May 2012 11:00 AM PDT

'Floss the teeth you want to keep.' ~dentist, quoted by Nick Crocker

Post written by Leo Babauta.

For many years, I rarely flossed, and as a result had some not-so-pleasant dental problems. I always knew I should have been flossing, but could never make the habit stick.

Creating the habit of flossing is a recent triumph for me, and because I've had a bunch of people ask about flossing, I decided to share what works best.

Let's start by saying I'm not an expert on flossing. But I do know a thing or two about creating the habit of flossing, and that's what we're focusing on here.

I do know that flossing can fairly quickly improve your dental health. If you haven't been flossing, it's likely that you have some kind of gum infection, and so flossing will cause some unpleasant (but not really painful) bleeding. That's normal, and it will go away after a few days of flossing (at least in my experience).

Your teeth will also start to feel cleaner, which is an amazing experience. And when you go to the dentist (you should, if you aren't regularly, trust me), you'll get a much better report, and have much less nasty dental work to be done.

Let's take a look at how to form the habit of flossing.

Forming the Habit

These are the steps that worked for me:

  1. Pick a trigger. For a habit to be automatic, it needs a trigger — something that is already in your daily routine. If you already brush your teeth every morning, regularly, then I suggest that as your trigger. Actually, a better trigger is going to brush your teeth — say you go into the bathroom to brush your teeth, and reach for your toothbrush … that's your trigger. Floss right at that point, before you brush your teeth, and then brush your teeth after.
  2. Have a visual reminder. The key is to do the new habit right after the trigger, but at first you might easily forget. So have the dental floss right next to your toothbrush, where you won't forget it. You might also put up a note next to your bathroom mirror so you can't possibly forget.
  3. Floss just one tooth. This is an old idea, but it works well. Start your habit by just flossing one tooth. It's so remarkably easy that you won't be able to say it's too hard, or you don't have the time. It will feel a bit ridiculous, but just do it. On day two, floss two teeth. Slowly expand every 1-3 days until you're flossing all your teeth. Sure, you won't get the full benefit of flossing all your teeth at first, but the key is not to get the full benefit but to create a habit that lasts.
  4. Focus on the enjoyment. Many people put off flossing because it seems hard or boring or unpleasant, but it doesn't have to be. Flossing is a pleasurable activity if you allow yourself to be present, and think about how your teeth are getting cleaner and how nice that is. I love the feeling of clean teeth.
  5. Mark it on your calendar. Every day you floss, mark a big X on your calendar (Jerry Seinfeld's secret). Try to string together a bunch of Xs, and you're golden.

That's really all it takes. Focus on this one habit for a few weeks to a month, and you'll have a new flossing habit. Matt Frazier did this, along with a bunch of other habits, and it helped change his life (read his amazing story). It's such a simple thing, but it can change yours too.

Western Buddhism Into the 80's

Article by Arjanyai

In March 2502/1959, the Chinese made an attempt to arrest the Dalai Lama who then fled through the Himalaya to India. As Tibet was made part of China, refugees streamed to the northern borders of India and Nepal where they established large colonies. Some of the Tibetans went further to Europe and America where they founded monasteries and refugee communities. Tibetan meditation centres were also established for the native Western people and since 2508/1965 Tibetan Buddhism has begun to be well known to the Americans. Under compe-tent masters (called Rimpoche), Tibetan meditation centres have multiplied rapidly and they are gaining new disciples every day.

Among the best-known and most influential of the Tibetan masters in America are Chogyam Trungpa Tulku and Tarthang Tulku. Chogyam Trungpa arrived in the United States in 2513/1970 when he founded the Tail of the Tiger community near Barnet, Vermont, in March. In November of the same year, he moved to Boulder, Colorado, where the Karma Dzong Meditation Center was organized in March 2514/1971 and the Naropa Institute originated in 2517/1974.Tarthang Tulku arrived in the United States in 2501/1968. It is he who founded the first Tibetan meditation centre for Americans, the Tibetan Nyingmapa Meditation Center in Berkeley, California, which was organized in the spring of 2502/1969.

The degree of the success of Tibetan Buddhism in America is clearly indicated in the following words of Needleman: "Tibetan Bud-dhism will be for the West in the coming decade what Zen Buddhism has been in the last decade and...will enrich our understanding of religion no less than Zen Buddhism has."

In Britain, a number of Tibetan Buddhist centres have also been established. Among these are the Tibetan Centre at Samya Ling, the Kham Tibetan House, the Manjushri Institute and the College of Tibetan Buddhist Studies.

In 2519/1976, a group of Americans on the East Coast founded an organization to provide a place for the intensive practice of insight (! Vipassan a) meditation, called the Insight Meditation Society. The IMS now operates a retreat centre which is set on 80 wooded acres in the quiet farm country of Barre in central Massachusetts. Besides the unsalaried staff, the Society invites meditation teachers from other parts of America, Europe and Asia to conduct retreats at the IMS. Of the four resident teachers of the centre, the first two, Jack Kornfield and Joseph Goldstein, spent long years as Buddhist monks studying and practising meditation under Southeast Asian meditation masters, especially Buddhadasa Bhikkhu of Suan Mokh, Chaiya, and Ajahn Chah of Wat Pah Pong, Ubon, both in Thailand. With this Southern Buddhist background of its ex-monk teachers, this big meditation centre can be said to represent the Theravada meditation tradition in America.

Also in 2519/1976, Ajahn Sumedho, an American monk, was granted permission by his teacher, Ajahn Chah of Wat Pah Pong, a forest monastery in Ubon Province in Northeast Thailand, to visit his aging parents in California. On his way back to Thailand, Ajahn Sumedho made a stop in London where he came into contact with Mr. George Sharp, Chairman of the English Sangha Trust, which was established in 2499/1956 to provide a suitable residence for bhikkhus in England. The Trust owned the Hampstead Buddhist Vihara which was, in 2519/1976, empty. In 2520/1977, Ajahn Sumedho accompanied Ajahn Chah to London and was left with three other Western monks, all disciples of Ajahn Chah, to stay at the Hampstead Buddhist Vihara. As the site of the Vihara was considered unsuited for forest monks and as a forest called Hammer Wood in West Sussex was given to the Sangha, the monks headed by Ajahn Sumedho moved from London to Sussex on June 22, 2522/1979. There, they developed the Chithurst Forest Monastery or Wat Pah Cittaviveka, where the Thai forest Theravada tradition began to be settled in the West and the Western Sangha began to grow on the Western soil.

Getting a grip on nirvana

Posted: 29 May 2012 09:00 AM PDT

At times, I agree, it is much easier to describe nirvana (P., nibbana) in negative terms.  Ask anyone to describe freedom or liberty in positive terms.  It is extremely difficult.  The easier route is to explain these terms negatively.  Still, we shouldn't draw the conclusion that nirvana is a form of annihilation or mystical death.  It is a mistake to adhere to a nihilistic interpretation of nirvana which, I admit, is easy to do.

From the Pali canon we learn that nirvana has the nature of being unconditioned (P. asankhata) but on a positive side we also learn that it is the ultimate, the truth, the farther shore, the subtle, the stable, the peaceful, the excellent, the good, the security, the wonderful, the marvelous, the purity, the island, the cave, the protection, the refuge and the goal (cp. S. iv. 369–373).

Nirvana has more to do with realizing the true substance or suchness (tathatâ) of phenomena.  By doing so, one is forever liberated from the delusion that phenomena are something real in themselves, furthermore, that there is nothing beyond phenomena.  By analogy it is like understanding that waves are merely the undulation of water and nothing in themselves.  The attainment of nirvana puts one, not in the conditioned world but beyond it in the unconditioned which is thoroughly real, more real in fact that anything conditioned.  As a result, the thrist to possess conditioned reality ceases including all it implies, including our temporal bodies.

Interestingly enough, one "attains utter nibbana in his very self" (paccattamyeva parinibbâyati) and nowhere else (cp. M. i. 255-256). The self, in this sense, is nothing less than ultimate reality which remains unrealized by those who have not attained nirvana.  Without nirvana, ordinary beings or prithagjana are only able to see composed, conditioned reality; not the unconditioned from which it is made.  In Mahayana Buddhism the self or atman is nirvana.

Kâshyapa, accordingly at the time one becomes a Tathagata, a Buddha, he is in nirvana, and is referred to as "permanent" "steadfast", "calm", "eternal" and "atman" (Mahâbherîhâraka Sutra).

Posted: 29 May 2012 08:00 AM PDT

Here is a list of 12 benchmarks of spiritual practice (source unknown) with examples of how I work with them. This list is also a way to know that our spiritual practice is bearing fruit.

1. An increased tendency to allow things happen rather than make them happen.

As a mom of two children I spent many years trying to make things happen. I wanted my children to act in certain ways, eat certain foods, choose certain clothing, etc. etc. As they got older and I watched myself trying to be "in control", I realized I could trust them to be themselves. I realized I could allow them to make choices and guide them when necessary. This realization brought feelings of relief and a sense of freedom. I brought that realization to my work and relationships and have enjoyed watching the process of things rather than trying to control them.

2. Frequent attacks of joy, unexplained smiling and random bursts of laughter.

This is a real joy and comes from delighting in simple pleasures and acts of kindness. Happiness is inherent in being mindful during each and every day. As a result of enjoying simple pleasures and the beauty that surrounds me, I do not chase after excitement through traveling, attending the latest retreat, purchasing the newest technological toys or other material possessions.

3. Feelings of being closely connected with others and nature.

When I feel reactive to someone I remind myself that we are all connected. We all want to be happy and in most situations we do the best we can. This does not mean that I accept everything everyone does, but it does help me to soften when I realize someone might be coming from a sense of their own pain when they do something that results in causing pain in others.

4. Frequent overwhelming, almost dizzying, episodes of appreciation.

I have kept a gratitude journal for several years and I share my weekly writing with two friends each Sunday. Making the commitment with friends to share the journal reminds me to write in it daily or weekly. There have been some weeks that seem to be marked by difficulty and sorrow. When I write what I am grateful for, I realize even the challenging times have moments of beauty and offer things/people/situations to be grateful for.

5. A tendency to think and act spontaneously rather than from fears based on past experience.

When I react habitually, based on past experience, rather than being mindful of the present circumstances, I am acting on automatic pilot. All situations, even if we think they resemble past situations, are really new situations. Coming into situations with an open mind brings new possibilities for creative responses.

6. An unmistakable ability to enjoy each moment.

The attitude we bring into situations can determine our responses to them. Being open to each moment, bringing mindfulness to each moment, allows us to experience enjoyment in even mundane tasks.

7. A loss of ability to worry.

I have learned that worry is not helpful and often what I worry about does not happen. Recently I was experiencing pain on the right side of my mouth. I thought my bottom right molar was the source of the pain. I called my dentist and made an appointment. I was thinking I might need a crown or a root canal. I worried that it would be expensive and painful, especially since the tooth is in the back of my mouth and difficult to reach. I decided to have the tooth extracted. I worried about the procedure. How is a tooth extracted? Will there be cutting and bleeding? How long will it take for the gums to heal? Will I have to change my appointments? I went to see the Dentist. He took an ex-ray and asked me questions. The tooth, it seems, was fine. The pain I experienced was due to an infection which could be cleared up with penicillin. All that worry about crowns, root canals and extractions was for naught.
I have not yet lost my ability to worry, but I worry less now, so there's progress.

8. A loss of desire for conflict.

When I see an opportunity for conflict, I remember two things:

a. There is another way of looking at things. When I bring lovingkindness to situations, there is no need for conflict.
b. Do I want to be right or happy? When I let go of needing to be right, I also let go of conflict – and that makes me happy.

9. A loss of interest in taking things personally.

Sometimes things people say or do feel so personal. At these times I remind myself that people do what they do as a result of their conditions (upbringing, personalities, life circumstances and perspectives) that do not have anything to do with me.

10. A loss of appetite for drama and judgment.

The drama I enjoy is found at movie theaters. Drama in life is tiresome and not necessary.

When I find myself judging others, I look inward and find my judgment has to do with what I want to change in myself.

11. A loss of interest in judging yourself.

As a result of understanding the importance and power of kindness I am much kinder to myself and to others.

12. Prone to giving love without expecting anything in return.

I find giving love to be the most satisfying thing I do. When I am loving, my heart feels open and expansive and I am truly happy.

Awakening to our true nature

Posted: 29 May 2012 06:00 AM PDT

I subscribe to the newsletters of Rick Hanson, who contributes articles to Wildmind and who is a well-known author and neuropsychologist. He's a very stimulating man! Today's newsletter was an interesting one, and it prompted some thinking on my part.

He opens by asking a much-pondered question about human nature: "Deep down, are we basically good or bad?" From a neurological point of view, he comes down firmly on the side of good.

His reasoning is this:

When the body is not disturbed by hunger, thirst, pain, or illness, and when the mind is not disturbed by threat, frustration, or rejection, then most people settle into their resting state, a sustainable equilibrium in which the body refuels and repairs itself and the mind feels peaceful, happy, and loving.

Basically, he's talking about the sympathetic nervous system (responsible for "fight, flee, or freeze" responses to potential danger) and the parasympathetic nervous system (responsible for the "rest and digest" response that brings us back to balance when danger is past). Rick calls this "rest and digest" state the Responsive mode, and the "flight, flight, or freeze" state the Reactive mode.

Rick points out that the Responsive mode is our default state — a fundamental "strange attractor" in our brain states. And therefore, he says, it's this relaxed and loving state that's your true nature: "Your deepest nature is peace not hatred, happiness not greed, love not heartache, and wisdom not confusion."

I don't have any disagreement with this at all. What Rick is trying to do, I think, is to align neuroscience with certain Buddhist views of Buddha Nature which suggest that the mind is inherently pure and compassionate. Buddha Nature can be a useful way to see things as long as it's not taken too seriously.

Check out Bodhipaksa's meditation CDs and MP3s

The thought I had, though, was that relaxation and rest, and even happiness and love, are not enough. It's great to be free from stress — for a while. But then what happens if we stay relaxed? We start to seek out sources of excitement. We can't handle too much peace! I don't think that the resting state is actually a "sustainable equilibrium," because rest and being "peaceful, happy, and loving" are not in themselves deeply satisfying enough for us. We always want something more. And the resting state is fragile because it's always going to be challenged by events from our lives (a crazy day at the office, a child with a tantrum).

The untrained mind in Responsive mode can never be loving enough, or peaceful enough to avoid being tipped over into reactivity. So we need to deepen our capacity for responsiveness. We need to train the mind, and not simply relax. I'm not disagreeing with Rick or criticizing him, incidentally, — just drawing out some of the implications of his presentation; Rick suggests a number of ways in his newsletter of how we can "tip forward into our deepest nature."

Cultivating attentiveness, or mindfulness, changes the base state of our Responsive mode so that it's less prone to reactivity. With mindfulness we notice quicker when the mind is starting to slip into reactivity. And this allows us to act. In a mindful state we learn to regulate the brain's "fight or flight" module, the amygdala. In fact, with repeated training the amygdala — the part of the brain largely responsible for the Reactive mode — gets smaller, the parts of the brain responsible for regulating the amygdala get larger, and the number of connections from one to the other (allowing for this regulation) increase.

Deepening our lovingkindness by training in metta — as Buddhism calls the loving response that wants others to be happy — also helps us to go more deeply into Rick's Responsive mode. Lovingkindness allows us to calm down the amygdala faster. The amygdala's task is to scan our environment, looking for danger, and to alert us (via a flood of visceral feelings) when it's detected a potential threat. Lovingkindness allows us to see people as beings who want to be happy rather than as beings who want to hurt us (and very few people want to hurt us). Rather than seeing someone's anger, say, as a threat to our peace of mind, we refocus on their wellbeing; how can I help this person be happier? and we develop more lovingkindness and compassion for ourselves, as well. We take care of ourselves through compassion rather than through fear and anger.

These two practices, of mindfulness and lovingkindness, don't fix thing instantly. But they help us bring ourselves back into the Responsive mode over and over again. And we do have to keep coming back, because our reactions to life's events will keep propelling us into Reactive mode. That's what training's about; coming back over and over again to our purpose or living from a deeper level of fulfillment.

Lastly, a deep appreciation of change helps us to feel less threatened so that we can put the amygdala (perhaps, if this is what Awakening is really like) permanently offline, so that the Responsive mode becomes not just our default mode, but where we live, permanently.

Eenie, Meenie, Minie, Moe, with which meditation should I go?

Posted: 29 May 2012 05:00 AM PDT

Article by Michaela Scherr

Whenever I've taught meditation there'd be those that immediately 'got it', and those who found it a struggle. However, with continued practise and learning how to refocus, those who initially struggled eventually also 'got it'. Not only that, after time they discovered their own unique way of getting into the zone quickly and easily. There are many different styles of meditation, so which one is right for you?You can choose from:1.A writing meditation - using either the dominant or non-dominant hand2.Focussing on an object such as a candle3.Repeating Mantras4.A visually guided meditation5.Through painting or sketching6.Walking - anywhere 7.Through breath work8.Body movement9.Swimming10.Listening to soothing musicTo find one you're going to be happy with try and road test a few first. Maybe you've already tried to meditate and found yourself even more frustrated than before you started. Two comments I've heard in the past regarding meditation that really stand out for me are:1. To meditate you must completely clear your mind and think nothing. Yeah right. Personally this has never worked for me, nor have I observed this to work with newcomers. How can anyone new to this practise think nothing? Words as well as immediate issues arise, and mind chatter just keeps on keeping on. The good news is that you can learn to overcome this; it just takes some practise coupled with patience.2. If you're stressed, meditate.Speaking from experience, if I am pretty stressed out (which incidentally happens rarely) and I try to have a decent meditation session, it rarely works well for me. For a start I'm not adequately prepared eg, not in the present moment and still in problem solving mode. From my observation of others when they're stressed and try to meditate they become further frustrated because they're unable to stay focussed and get into the zone. The secret is to prepare yourself adequately first.Find yourself a technique you know you'll enjoy so practising will be a positive experience. Alternatively find y! ourself a meditation group that has a good teacher. Not only will you learn to meditate, you might also form some great friendships that will last a lifetime. Meditation is a discipline that can be learned through a step by step process, and once adept, you can use it for any number of reasons. Decide if your meditation is for relaxation; connection to spirit or self; to achieve clarity of mind; or to regain some inner strength. My reasons for meditation are numerous. I meditate on purpose to receive answers to questions I might have. Before going into a meditative state I write down exactly what my question is, give it a timeline, and wait. Generally the answer is received during the session or shortly afterwards, depending of course on the timeline I gave. I'll also meditate to access my creative self. After I've jotted down what my intention is I go into a meditative state with pen and paper handy. Generally what happens for me is that I start receiving ideas one after the after which I quickly jot down. I've written an entire workshop through one of these meditation sessions. A great self healing tool, whenever I feel 'flat' I'll use colours, crystals, sound, and essential oils for my meditation sessions. After each session I am lighter, centred, balanced, and more focused. So if you're now ready and keen to get started with some serious (or light hearted) meditation simply follow the 10 basic points listed below to help you on your way:1.Decide where and when you want to meditate. 2.Get yourself ready by putting on soothing music and have your aromatherapy oil burning with your favourite oil blend. Activate the answering machine. Is there anything else you need?3.You might like to have a journal and pen ready for some note taking at the end of your meditation with inspirations and insights that come to you.4.Spend a little while settling into your space until you're happy with your comfort level. Are you too cold or hot or is the temperature just right?5.Slowly begin breathing in and out, using your diaphrag! m muscle s tuning into the rhythm of your breathing and the rise and fall of your chest.6.You may wish to close your eyes at this point and enjoy this peaceful, relaxing moment, closing the door to the outside world for now.7.If closing your eyes is not for you, focus on an object such as a candle (take extra care with any lit flame) or something similar.8.If images or internal chatter starts to become frustrating, avoid suppressing them, instead name them, release them, and move on. If this persists, make a mental note that you will deal with it after your session. Refocus and continue.9.When you're ready to come back, return wide awake and alert, wriggling your toes and touching your nose and have a really, really big stretch. 10.Use your journal to write any insights or inspirations you may have had during your journey, or simply enjoy the present moment with greater clarity and peace.Welcome back! If you haven't tried meditation yet, why not give it a go? Add another 'life skill' to your resource toolkit and enjoy greater health and wellbeing!

The Field of Consciousness

Posted: 29 May 2012 04:00 AM PDT

Article by Rev. Eleanor Richard

"Out beyond ideas of wrong doling and right doing there is a field.I'll meet you there." Rumi

Did you know that the collective consciousness of the human race can be calibrated, both for current events and for past eras? And that it can be determined scientifically just how low or high a consciousness any individual is now, or has been in the past? Humanity lives in and is part of a vast field of intelligent energy that some call Divine Love. As with all things in existence, evolution first occurs as a movement of energy, around which a physical form is usually condensed. Gradually consciousness (awareness) emerges and continues to evolve. On an arbitrary scale of 1-1000, the level of consciousness can be calibrated for various species, animals, plants and rocks included--just about anything.

Thanks to the enormous work of Dr. David R. Hawkins and thousands of tests, we know without doubt that the body can verify truth, something that is quite impossible for the mind, or ego, since matter must respond to its local energy field. Thanks also goes to John Diamond's work with muscle testing (Touch for Health), and others who are continually validating this spiritual science. Through clinical testing we know without doubt that bodies never lie.

The truth is a clear path to peace and integrity. If experienced without judgment, warring conflicts within the individual as well as between nations can be resolved. This is a science of truth. We can use the Map of Consciousness devised by Dr. David R. Hawkins and his multitude of researchers as a tool for self-discovery through the levels of consciousness.

Since ego controls our lives when we are not actually present in the moment of now, our thinking mind cannot tell truth from falsehood. However, our bodies can, with 100% accuracy when tested using Hawkins' prescribed method of kinesiology, or "Touch for Health" (muscle testing.) (See Hawkins, Power vs. Force, or his other books.) This is because the physical realm must reproduce the! amount of energy in the energy field in which it resides, bypassing ego's perceptions, wants and logical interpretations. It's that simple.

The Relaxed Wife (1957)

Despite what we hear today from politicians playing the nostalgia card, the "peaceful" fifties weren't so stress-free. While documenting mid-century anxiety in excruciating detail, ephemeral films also show diverse responses to it: erasure, behavior modification, medication. To those conditioned to think of the fifties as the era of narcotized housewives, The Relaxed Wife's title might be a bit misleading. It's not about calming an anxious housewife so she can face the daily grind without going mad. She's already relaxed (although we're without a clue as to how she got that way). It's her husband (played by an unnamed actor capable of truly amazing facial distortions) that's the one with the problem. As a person, he doesn't seem particularly out of the ordinary, and he certainly isn't a candidate for deep psychiatry. What he's up against, the film seems to say, is the stress and strain incurred by good behavior, conformity and being a parent and spouse. As the film progresses, in fact, it seems more and more like a subsurface view of the bright, "happy-go-spending" world of In the Suburbs (see The Uncharted Landscape disc). This postwar, post-scarcity environment is wracked by traumas arising out of life at its most ordinary. And lurking in the bushes are pharmaceutical companies ready to medicate anxious citizens. Fifties popular magazines are filled with tips on anxiety management and stress reduction, and media cliches about "Miltown housewives," dependent on a famous ...

Become A Certified Yoga Instructor

Posted: 29 May 2012 01:00 AM PDT

Article by Bodhi Tree Yoga International

If you are planning to do a physical fitness course in order to become a trainer in a gym or school you should also consider Yoga training so that you can add that to a part of your expertise. Why? Because Yoga is one of the fastest growing trends in the United States as well as other countries all over the world when it comes to physical fitness.

This physical exercise came from the east (India) and has become popular all over the world because of the many benefits it has to the human body. It promotes good health, flexibility, long life, good breathing techniques and a peaceful mind. Yoga, in India, was only taught by gurus or instructors at temples who kept their bodies in tune with nature. But as the benefits of Yoga were known throughout India, people started taking it outside.

Unfortunately, there are not many instructors around who are well trained in the Yoga exercise routines which are also known as "asanas." There are thousands of "asanas" in the art of Yoga, but it is not important to know all of them. Once you get a hold of how to go about doing these "asanas" you are ready to teach it to anyone.

Yoga is not an easy thing to grasp in the beginning, but with good training courses, you will surely be able to practice the art as well as teach it to others. In order to become a certified Yoga instructor you need to get a certificate course done. Yoga training courses are available at a few places or you could probably get one done online. However, if you go about doing it online you will not have the true knowledge of a Yoga instructor.

The best way to learn Yoga, and the best type of Yoga

courses that you should do are the ones that are taught in India itself. This is the best way since yoga has originated from India and what's better than learning it from the country where it originated.

It is not a hard thing nowadays to find Yoga certification courses in India since there are programs that are now available for outsiders at a very cheap rate. Y! ou can f ind yoga training courses that last for three months and that provide food and accommodation.

It is one of the best physical training courses you will do if you are in that line and you will notice the number of people coming to you will be immense because you know how to teach yoga. Even celebrities are taking up yoga to stay fit so why not try your hand at it and start teaching.

Phurba- The Tibetan Ritual Dagger

Posted: 29 May 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Article by Sylvia Smelcer

The Tibetan Buddhist ritual dagger is called the phurba or phurpa in Tibetan Buddhism, and in Sanskrit it is called the kila or the kilaya. The phurba is used in ceremonies, and it is also known as the magic dagger. The first syllable in phurba, 'Phur' is translated from the Sanskrit 'kila' meaning peg or nail. Padmasambhava is generally assumed to be the inventor of the phurba. Padmasambhava first used the phurpa to consecrate the ground when he established the Samye monastery in the 8th century. The tent is an important part of life in Tibet, because for so long the Tibetan people were nomadic. In Tibetan culture, placing the tent pegs into the ground is seen as sacrificing the ground. The shape of the phurba might have possibly come from shape of the stake used to hold down tents. The three-sided style of the phurba could have also come from an ancient vedic tool used to pin down sacrifices. The phurba has three segments on its blade. The three segments represent three energies. These energies are known as the 'three poisons.' The three poisons are attachment, ignorance, and aversion or fear. The three sides of the phurba also represent the three spirit worlds, and the phurba itself represents the axis of these three spirit worlds. The center of the phurba brings the three spirit worlds together. The phurba's blade represents 'method' and the handle represents 'wisdom'. There are usually designs or carvings on the top of phurbas. Buddha heads and skulls are both popular designs. Sometimes the Buddha heads come in threes to mirror the blade. Ganesh is also popular as decoration on the top of phurbas. The phurba is a symbol of stability, and is used during ceremonies. The phurba is often used by Tantric practitioners. Only those who are taught to use the phurpa should use it in this type of Tibetan Buddhist ritual. The phurba can be used to tether negative energies during ceremonies. The blade on a phurba is never sharp, because it is only to be used as a ritual dagger, never as a weapon. The p! hurba is often stuck in a bowl of rice or other types of grains during Tibetan Buddhist rituals. Phurpas can be made from wood, bone, copper, or brass. If more than one metal is used to make a phurba, it is done in a combination of three metals or of nine metals. The numbers three and nine are both important numbers in Tibetan Buddhist rituals. The number three refers to the three worlds or the three realms of existence, the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm. The number nine is significant in the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism, who believe the tantras are nine stages on the spiritual path. The phurba is also used by Dorje Phurba a.k.a. Vajrakilaya, the wrathful form of Vajrapani (one of the wrathful deities). Vajrakilaya is often seen holding the phurba in Buddhist statues. Vajrakilaya is a wrathful deity and a remover of obstacles. Phurbas can also be used as decoration in temples, meditation rooms, or as decoration in homes. To use the phurba in Buddhist ceremonies, practitioners first meditate, then they recite the sadhana of the phurba, and then they invite the deity to enter the phurba. They then stab the phurba into the ground, or into a bowl of rice or grain, imagining the evil spirits or negative energies are caught beneath the phurba dagger's blade.

Ashtanga Yoga

Posted: 28 May 2012 11:00 PM PDT

Article by yoga meditate

Ashtanga Yoga is a method of yoga that allegedly has its historic routes in an ancient manuscript. This script is known as the Yoga Korunta, which was created by the Sage Vamana Rishi. Its current form was developed by Sri K. Pattabhi.

Yoga is intimately connected to the religious beliefs and practices of the Indian religions.[52] The influence of Yoga is also visible in Buddhism, which is distinguished by its austerities, spiritual exercises, and trance states.[53][54]

[edit] Yogacara BuddhismYogacara (Sanskrit: "Practice of Yoga [Union]"[55] ), also spelled yogāchāra, is a school of philosophy and psychology that developed in India during the 4th to 5th centuries.

Yogacara received the name as it provided a yoga, a framework for engaging in the practices that lead to the path of the bodhisattva.[56] The Yogacara sect teaches yoga in order to reach enlightenment.[57]

[edit] Ch`an (Zen) BuddhismZen (the name of which derives from the Sanskrit "dhyana" via the Chinese "ch'an"[58]) is a form of Mahayana Buddhism. The Mahayana school of Buddhism is noted for its proximity with Yoga.[54] In the west, Zen is often set alongside Yoga; the two schools of meditation display obvious family resemblances.[59] This phenomenon merits special attention since the Zen Buddhist school of meditation has some of its roots in yogic practices.[60] Certain essential elements of Yoga are important both for Buddhism in general and for Zen in particular.[3]

[edit] Tibetan BuddhismYoga is central to Tibetan Buddhism. In the Nyingma tradition, practitioners progress to increasingly profound levels of yoga, starting with Mahā yoga, continuing to Anu yoga and ultimately undertaking the highest practice, Ati yoga. In the Sarma traditions, the Anuttara yoga class is equivalent. Other tantra yoga practices include a system of 108 bodily postures practiced with breath and heart rhythm. Timing in movement exercises is known as Trul khor or union of moon and sun (channel) prajna energies. The body p! ostures of Tibetan ancient yogis are depicted on the walls of the Dalai Lama's summer temple of Lukhang. A semi-popular account of Tibetan Yoga by Chang (1993) refers to Dumo, the generation of heat in one's own body, as being "the very foundation of the whole of Tibetan Yoga" (Chang, 1993, p7). Chang also claims that Tibetan Yoga involves reconciliation of apparent polarities, such as prana and mind, relating this to theoretical implications of tantrism.

10 Undeniable Reasons Why You Should Exercise Your Self-Awareness (And How to Start)

Posted: 28 May 2012 10:00 PM PDT

Are you Aware?

Let's say you want to travel from the East coast to the West. You have your car, but realize that the tires' pressure is unbalanced, the car is in need of an oil change, very little wiper fluid, and the brakes seem a little strange. Nothing deadly, but you know you can make it across the country — it might take a little longer, and the chances of a breakdown is now tangible.

Or, you can take the time to fix up your car, balance the tires, do the whole runaround, and allow yourself a smoother ride.

The idea of exercising your self-awareness is very much the same: you are the vehicle, and by fine-tuning your flaws (bad habits, procrastination, always angry or jealous) you are simplifying and enhancing yourself to meet your goals in a more straightforward, focused manner.

Why reroute your efforts in a constant state of pandemonium?

What is self-awareness?
Self-awareness is the ability to be constantly aware of your thoughts, emotions, and actions. It's staying true to yourself and your current situation, while understanding your environment and the people in it. It's about control — over yourself, your motives, principles, thoughts, etc.

How can you tell if most people lack self-awareness? Go drive on the highway, or check out Twitter or Facebook, and you can easily spot people who are unaware of their actions, thoughts, and emotions; it seems like they have no control over themselves, consistently repeating self-defeating acts, acting upon impulses, and always whining and complaining.

The benefits of exercising your self-awareness
Of course there are benefits; there are life-changing benefits.

If you can! agree w ith me on these statements: that always being frustrated, angry, jealous, and stressed out is just a waste of time; that procrastination is a waste of time; not focusing on what is important in our life, our goals, and the people that matter, is a waste of a time. I can name so much more, but you get the idea.

Self-awareness, from what I have learned so far and put into much practice, can eliminate — or at least reduce — most of these hinderances. Ask yourself: Why should I continue self-defeating acts? Why continue to shoot yourself in the foot?

Exercising your self-awareness can help you:
  • ...get to the heart of problems and issues without rerouting your efforts — while fixing them without harming yourself or others.
  • ...focus on what's most important in your life, the necessary steps to achieving it, and actually initiating instead of procrastinating.
  • ...be less influenced by negative emotions that influence you to act subconsciously.
  • ...diminish needless actions, thoughts, events, and people that don't provide any real value to yourself.
  • ...be a better person, a good person — a more mindful person.
  • ...understand yourself better — your train of thought, actions, attitude, strengths and weaknesses.
  • ...develop, learn, and grow at a fluid rate instead of always being distracted and losing focus.
  • ...inspire others to partake in your personal development, your quest on being a better person (because the world needs more of those).
  • ...alleviate stress, unmindful acts or thoughts, and to put forth the effort of developing productive, beneficial habits towards your life.
  • ...live a more fruitful, positive, balanced life because every irrelevant factor has been reduced or eliminated.
  • Self-awareness is a life tool, and with much practice, you can strengthen your mind and develop the habit of always being aware — in a sense, unwavering and indomitable. It will shock you when you see the benefits and! change within you when exercising self-awareness.
How does one exercise their self-awareness?
Simple: by being aware.  Paying close attention to what you do as well as how you do it. Self-analyzing yourself — being introspective — and admitting to your bad habits and doing your absolute best to fix them and replace them with more mindful habits.

It's a daily process, something you must always choose to do. When anger or frustration or resentment strikes you, that is the perfect time to be aware of yourself, your next move, your emotions, thoughts, and so forth. Choose to do a harmful act, and as Marcus Aurelius states in Meditations: you're doing more harm to yourself than to others.

But now I want to hear your thoughts on this. Is this something you will start putting into practice? Have you put it into practice already, and have you seen changes within yourself? Talk to you soon.
