Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Drug Treatment Shows Promise

An experimental drug, called ibrutinib, shows promise treating elderly patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, according to preliminary findings from a phase I/II clinical trial.

Clinical trial results do not always hold up in later studies.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CCL) is the most common type of leukemia. Some 16,000 new cases arise annually in the United States. About 4,600 Americans die each year of the CCL, which is incurable. In the trials, the oral agent was found to have "few side effects and a high one-year survival rate in older patients," the researchers report.

Ibrutinib, also labeled PCI-32765, was designed to target Bruton's tyrosine kinase, a protein that is essential for CLL-cell survival and proliferation.

"This interim report indicates that older patients respond well to this oral, targeted therapy, which lacks many of the side effects of chemotherapy and produces a quite dramatic one-year progression-free survival," said Dr. John C. Byrd of the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center. "The high overall response rate and lack of side effects suggests that ibrutinib deserves further study as a first-line treatment in elderly CLL patients."

Byrd will present the results at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Chicago.

Standard treatment for CLL involves use of the chemotherapeutic drug fludarabine. These regimens can effectively control the disease until drug resistance arises, but fludarabine has serious side effects, and sometimes causes death, in older patients.

The study involves 31 patients aged 65 or older with active CLL who require stem-cell transplantation for treatment. Of these patients, 26 were randomized to receive a drug dose of 420 milligrams (mg) and five received a drug dose of 840 mg. Of patients receiving 420 mg, 8 percent had no sign of disease and 65 percent showed improvement in their disease, and an estimated 93 percent would show no change in their condition.

Autism is typically not firmly diagnosed until a child is around 3 years old. For infants at 6 months with a high genetic risk for autism, another potential predictor has been found by noting weak head and neck control.

Researchers suggest adding the early test of motor skills to existing behavioral screenings for the risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and also, more broadly, language or social-developmental delays.

The test involves a "pull-to-sit" task, in which the infant is expected to maintain head alignment when being carefully yet firmly pulled by the arms from lying flat on his or her back to sitting up. The test can reveal a lack of postural control in infants that is normally achieved by 4 months old. Infants without postural control exhibit "head lag."

Other studies have found that head lag indicates developmental delays in preterm infants and children with cerebral palsy. But it hadn't been studied in relation to autism.

"Research aimed at improving early detection of autism has largely focused on measurement of social and communication development," said Dr. Rebecca Landa, director of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders at Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore. "However, disruption in early motor development may also provide important clues about developmental disorders such as autism."

Landa is presenting the findings at the International Meeting for Autism Research today in Toronto. Researchers at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital contributed to the study.

The study involved 40 infants at high risk for ASD because a sibling had the disorder. They were tested at 6, 14, 24 months, then checked at 30 to 36 months for autism. Ninety percent of infants diagnosed with ASD at that point had exhibited head lag as infants.

"Our findings show that the evaluation of motor skills should be incorporated with other behavioral assessments to yield insights into the very earliest signs of autism," Landa said.

Drowning remains the leading cause of death in children under age 4 other than birth defects, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

From 2005 to 2009, about 3,880 people died from drowningeach year in the United States, and more than 5,700 received emergency care for near- drowning incidents, the CDC says.

Death rates were highest for children between ages 1 and 4. In this age group, about 2.5 deaths occurred for every 100,000 children in the population, the report said.  Overall, there were 1.3 deaths per 100,000 people in the United States. More than half of all people treated in emergency rooms for near drowning were less than 4 years old, the report said.

The rate of death for males of all ages was about four times that of females (2 deaths per 100,000 for males versus 0.5 deaths per 100,000 for females). Males might be at a higher risk for drowning because they are more likely to overestimate their swimming ability, put themselves in riskier situations or use alcohol more frequently, the report said.

"To prevent drowning, all parents and children should learn survival swimming skills," which include learning how to right oneself after falling into water, and  how to float or tread water, the report said. Formal swimming lessons have been shown to reduce the risk of drowning among children under four in the United States, the report said.

Other ways to prevent drowning include isolating pools with fences, avoiding alcohol use while swimming, boating or supervising children, wearing lifejackets while boating and  learning cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the report said.

In contrast, mice that had their feeding restricted to eight hours a day were protected against obesity, despite the fact that they consumed just as many calories as the unrestricted mice.

The findings suggest that restricting meal times might be an underappreciated way to help people keep off the pounds, the researchers said.

"Every organ has a clock," said study researcher Satchidananda Panda, of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Calif. That means there are times that our livers, intestines, muscles and other organs work at peak efficiency, and other times when they are — more or less — sleeping, Panda said.

These metabolic cycles are critical for processes such as cholesterol breakdown, and they should be turned on when we eat and turned off when we don't, Panda said. When mice or people eat frequently throughout the day and night, it can throw off those normal metabolic cycles, he added.

Over the 18-week study, the time-restricted mice were protected from the adverse effects of their high-fat diet, and showed improvements in their metabolism compared with the unrestricted mice. They gained 28 percent less weight than unrestricted mice and suffered less liver damage.

Further work is needed to show the same thing happens in people, the researchers said. More studies should collect information on when people eat, and not just what they eat, Panda said.

Panda said there is reason to think our eating patterns have changed in recent years, as many people have greater access to food and stay up late into the night, even if just to watch TV. And when people are awake, they tend to snack, Panda said.

The study is published online today (May 17) in the journal Cell Metabolism.

It is so powerful of a force that it's paramount for us to be watchful of what we plant. The subconscious mind can bring about failure just as easily as it can bring about success. Either way, it takes the same amount of energy to produce results and as far as the subconscious mind is concerned, it really doesn't matter one way or the other as to which way we think.

Quantum physics has discovered that the entire universe is a field of pure consciousness which has the knowledge of all things. This consciousness is all connected together as 'one' and spontaneously knows everything that happens and when it happens within the universe. Our thoughts have an effect on this vast energy. Those who understand this force and use it to their advantage, are capable of bringing into their lives 'miraculous' events that have often astounded the masses.

It makes no difference whatsoever if your desires are large or small and with utilizing the correct mind power tactics, anything and everything is possible. The first step to achieving success is to know that such power does exist and believing that it can be yours. The following second step is to understand how these principles and laws operate and then put them into positive action.

The conscious mind, in tandem with your mind power, becomes the captain who gives the orders for the subconscious mind to bring about your desires. When you learn to completely control your thoughts, you will be able to create your own miracles, and in turn, you will then be able to control your destiny.

In addition, how you are active is up to you, as there are many ways you can utilize to help sharpen your mind and keep it active. One of the biggest dangers as a man that you will encounter is to have your life become so much of a routine that there is no longer any challenge to life, which then makes your mind become sluggish. Challenges of any kind can be helpful as not only will it challenge you as an individual, but it will also encourage your mind to keep thinking as you work out how to solve a problem.Solving problems is one of the best ways to keep a mind active. Whether you are engaging in daily puzzles like the kinds you find in newspapers or online, or you are involved in a job where you are a strategist, it is important to find ways of working your mind to keep it active. Your daily interactions in the office or workplace are beneficial as you interact with different daily events, which force your mind to think.If you enjoy keeping your mind active as a way of relaxing, there are many methods you can utilize. For instance, you can take up gaming, which not only forces you to learn the interaction within the game, but it makes your mind think to work out how to play and what is the best way to play. Although some do not think much of gaming, it remains an interesting way of exercising the mind while being able to relax. In addition, it forces the mind to encounter new things as each time a new game comes out you will be encouraged to learn a new set of controls and environment within the game. Another way of keeping the mind active is by interacting with others. It is fascinating all of the conversations you can have with other people, even when you are discussing things as simple as how your day and everyone else's day went. People can interact and provide opinions, which you can then use your cognitive mind to interpret and decide what you think of their thoughts. Although socializing is not always the most c! omprehen sive method, it does encourage the mind to remain active, which is necessary for a healthy mind and healthy body combination.

Jaffna is a district in Sri Lanka located in proximity to the sub-continent of India lying ten degrees in latitude to the north of the equator. The Bak Full Moon Poya is dedicated to commemorating Buddha's visit to Nagadeepa. Although Ruhuna, the southern territory and Nagadeepa were once ruled by imperial families they were at times also administered by the courtiers of the kings. Around the Buddhist and Hindu sites large relics may be seen that prove to be remnant! s of the reign of the pre-Sinhalese kings. Coffee Drinkers May Live Longer

Drinking coffee might help you live longer, a new study suggests.

Results show that death rates over a 13-year period among men and women who drank coffee decreased with a greater number of cups per day, up to six. The trend was seen for deaths from any cause, and from specific causes such as heart disease, respiratory disease, stroke and diabetes. This relationship, however, was not seen for those who died of cancer.

"We observed associations between coffee-drinking and a range of different causes of death, and across a number of different groups," said lead author Neal Freedman, of the National Institutes of Health. "The effect was seen in both men and women, those of different body weights, and in both former and never smokers."

The study showed an association, not a direct cause-effect relationship, between coffee and mortality rates.

Still, while high coffee consumption was previously thought to have adverse health effects, this study adds to the growing body of recent findings that show higher coffee consumption is not harmful, and in some cases may have health benefits, said Jeanine Genkinger, an epidemiology professor at the Columbia University School of Public Health in New York City, who was not involved in the research. Genkinger emphasized that the greatest benefits may come from black coffee — cream, sugar and additives may be detrimental to health.

The study will be published Thursday (May 17) in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Coffee's perks

Researchers looked at the coffee drinking habits of 402,260 members of the American Association of Retired Persons. Participants completed a detailed dietary, lifestyle and demographic questionnaire at the study's start, when they were between ages 50 and 71. During the study, 52,515 participants died.

The association between drinking coffee and mortality was seen among different races and education levels, and in a very large group with a large number of deaths — this type of analysis was not done in previous studies, said Esther Lopez-Garcia, of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health at the Autonomous University of Madrid in Spain.

The new study also removed the possibility of smoking and alcohol as confounding factors, said Edward Giovannucci, a nutrition and epidemiology professor at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. "One of the concerns about studies of coffee is that coffee drinkers often tend to be smokers and alcohol drinkers."

The limitations of the study included that participants reported their own coffee consumption, and only at the beginning of the 13-year study, Lopez-Garcia said. In addition, researchers did not gather data on the specific types of coffee consumed, except whether it was caffeinated.

A previous Mayo Clinic study showed that drinking four or more cups of coffee daily causes headaches, stomach upset, restlessness and a racing heartbeat — all attributable to caffeine. Some health conditions such as insomnia, anxiety and hypertension can worsen with too-frequent consumption.

"The potential effects on cardiovascular disease are complex, because some may be beneficial and some adverse, but the results from this study suggest that the benefits may outweigh the adverse ones," Giovannucci said.

Coffee contains many chemicals, including antioxidants and compounds that can prevent mutations."Some of the components in coffee are among the strongest and most abundant antioxidants in our diets," Giovannucci said.

Coffee may also be good for the brain. Neuroscientists have shown that coffee drinkers have a lower risk of brain disorders as they age. In fact, brain benefits may come with drinking decaf: A study of Type 2 diabetes patients showed those who drank decaf had a lower risk of mental decline than those who did not drink coffee. The researchers attributed the mental benefits to compounds called polyphenols, which have been linked with improved cognitive skills.

What's the true health benefit linked to coffee?

"Coffee, but not caffeine, is a very positive aspect of the diet, and in my opinion, it reduces the risk of many diseases, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes," said Terry Graham, a nutrition professor at the University of Guelph in Ontario. Graham said he recommends people at risk for Type 2 diabetes drink decaffeinated coffee.

Lopez-Garcia noted that coffee drinking may also be a marker of other healthy habits. "In the Mediterranean countries, people go to coffee shops to drink coffee, so this consumption is associated with leisure time and socializing," said Lopez-Garcia. She said that while biological mechanisms have been suggested to explain coffee's benefits, researchers should also look at environmental factors associated with coffee drinking.

Pass it on: Drinking coffee long-term may decrease the risk of death from heart and respiratory diseases, as well as stroke and diabetes.

Mastering Your Mind Power: You Are Responsible!

Here are three factors for you to consider. First, everyone is being moved to some goal by his or her subconscious mind. That is not to say that everyone is CONSCIOUSLY directing her or his subconscious mind toward a goal. In fact, in most cases, your subconscious mind is directing the person to goals that were placed in his or her mind by someone else. Your subconscious mind does not care. Its function is to bring into your physical experience whatever thoughts, ideas, beliefs, and mental images you consistently hold in your mind.

Second, once your subconscious mind accepts your goals, it will find ways and means to achieve them, period. Third, it is imperative that you consciously guide your subconscious mind toward the proper goals through programming or reprogramming it.

You are responsible for your life. Whether it is your health, your wealth, your happiness, and subsequently the kind of life you live, you are responsible. All too often, the road most of us take is to pass our responsibility on to others.

Look not to paternalistic Corporate and Public Sector America to provide you with a job that will take care of you financially, including retirement; and to make it possible for you to live the American Dream. Stop making doctors, pills, and potions responsible for your health. No longer make your significant other responsible for making you happy. Quit making preachers, rabbis, priests, and other persons responsible for the care of your soul.Do not allow others to convince you to believe that your financial life is either in ruins or is heading toward disaster. Sure, the newspapers, news magazines, radio and television news shows, and perhaps your own financial statements may all seem to present evidence that this is so, but that kind of thinking does not HAVE to be reality for you...unless you choose to accept it.

Remember, Napoleon Hill (Think And Grow Rich) taught that EVERY ADVERSITY CARRIES WITHIN IT THE SEED OF AN EQUIVALENT OR GREATER BENEFIT! If you have not ! already done so, why not hold that quote consistently in your conscious mind until it sinks into the depths of your subconscious mind. Include with the quote an affirmation that your subconscious mind is even now bringing a revelation of that equal or greater benefit to you.

From the day you were born to the day you die, your subconscious mind is constantly being programmed or reprogrammed. Sometimes it is being programmed correctly, but most of the time it is being programmed incorrectly. I do not intend to imply that the techniques used for the programming are incorrect, but that the programming is implanting goals that are attracting more of what you do not wish to experience into your life instead of what you do wish to experience.

It is your responsibility to take control by mastering your mind power and programming your subconscious with goals that bring your desires into your life rather than their counterparts. No one else can or will do it for you.

It is vitally important that you take that responsibility seriously...if you desire a better life. The alternative is to do nothing; and of course, there are plenty of people in and around your life who will happily continue to do the (incorrect) programming for you.

This I know for sure. You can claim or re-claim control of your own mind power. You are the most miraculous of all living beings on earth. You are the owner of a mind that is so stupendous, that as you truly begin mastering your mind power and consciously using it, there is no dream that you can dream that you cannot achieve.

Not aiming for the pith

The pith (sâra) or the essential part of Buddhism is given to us in the Culasaropama Sutta (lit. lesser-pith-simile sutta):

"So it is brahman, this holy life (brahmacariya) is not undertaken for advantage in gains, offerings and fame.  It is not for advantage in the consummation of moral habit.  It is not for for the advantage in concentration.  It is not done for advantage in knowledge and vision.  That brahman which is the immovable liberation of mind (citta), this is the goal, brahman of the holy life, this is the heartwood (sâra), this the culmination" (M. i. 204–205).

To be very brief, in the simile (upama) the Buddha tells the brahman Pingalokoccha, in regard to deluded religious practitioners, it is like a man walking around aiming at the pith of a great tree which would be its hardwood.  But instead of coming away with the pith or the hardwood, the man carries off what is not the hardwood such as the bark or the branches and leaves.  He is  firmly convinced that what he possesses is the pith or hardwood.  Obviously, the guy can't distinguish hardwood from the branches or leaves of this great tree!

In the same way, those who are convinced they are practicing Buddhism by doing other than aiming for its pith or essence, which is the immovable liberation of mind are deluding themselves.  They are so deluded they believe they're not deluded.

The Buddha, probably more than any religious teacher in the past, was well aware of the  difficulties of trying to teach those who were yet unawakened.  To be sure, he had no magic wand by which he could get rid of their ignorance.  Even those closest to him often didn't get it.  Although he had high hopes that a few of his followers might realize pure Mind; that it is fundamentally transcendent with regard to any and all phenomena, he also understood that precious few could become enlightened.  They were simply too bogged down in samsara to be able to even consider the importance of mind that when purified, it would reveal the truth.

Teen Drug & Alcohol Use Lowers Odds of College Degree

Drug and alcohol, and even smoking cigarettes, don't mix with getting a college degree. Those who started alcohol or drug use by age 14, or who became dependent on nicotine, drinks or marijuana, were less likely to finish college than those who took up vices later on or never did, a new study finds.

The research, detailed in the August issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, involved 6,242 male twins who served in the military during the Vietnam era. It was conducted by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and the Palo Alto Veterans Affairs Health Care System. The men in the study were surveyed when most were in their late 30s of early 40s.

"We can't say that substance dependence or early substance use causes lower educational achievement, but we do see a strong association," said lead author Julia D. Grant. "Even after we statistically controlled for the genes and the environmental factors that twins share, we found a relationship between substance use and educational achievement."

"Studying identical and fraternal twin pairs is useful for examining things like substance use and education because we can asses the extent to which a given behavior is influenced by genetic factors and by factors related to family and environment," Grant said. "Since identical twins share all of their genes and fraternal share about half, we can set up statistical comparisons to tease many of those factors apart."

Because of the G.I. Bill, veterans are less likely to have financial constraints that would prevent them from attending college, making them an interesting group for this study.

"Drugs and alcohol affect many lifetime milestones such as marriage, parenthood and employment, which are closely linked to education," Grant said. ASTANGA YOGA - Practiced in its correct sequential order, gradually leads the practitioner to rediscover his or her fullest potential on all levels of human consciousness - physical, psychological and spiritual. Through this practice of correct breathing (Ujjayi Pranayama), postures (asanas), and gazing point (driste), we gain control of the senses and a deep awareness of ourselves. By maintaining this discipline with regularity and devotion, one acquires steadiness of body and mind.

"Astanga" literally means eight limbs. They are described by Patanjali as: Yama (abstinences), Niyama (observances), Asana (postures), Pranayama (breath control), Pratyahara (sense withdrawal), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation), and Samadhi (contemplation). These branches support each other. Asana practice must be established for proper practice of pranayama, and is a key to the development of the yamas and niyamas. Once these four externally oriented limbs are firmly rooted, the last four internally oriented limbs will spontaneously evolve over time.

"Vinyasa" means breath synchronized movement. The breath is the heart of this discipline, and links asana to asana in a precise order. By synchronizing movement with breathing and practicing Mula and Uddiyana Bandhas (locks), an intense internal heat is produced. This heat purifies muscles and organs, expelling unwanted toxins as well as releasing beneficial hormones and minerals, which can nourish the body when the sweat is massaged back into the skin. The breath regulates the vinyasa and ensures efficient circulation of blood. The result is a light strong body.

There are three groups of sequences in the Astanga system. The Primary Series (Yoga Chikitsa) detoxifies and aligns the body. The Intermediate Series (Nadi Shodhana) purifies the nervous system by opening and cl! earing t he energy channels. The Advanced Series A, B, C and D (Sthira Bhaga) intergrate the strength and grace of the practice, requiring higher levels of flexibility and humility.

Each level is to be fully developed before proceeding to the next, and the sequential order of asanas is to be meticulously followed. Each posture is a preparation for the next, developing the strength and balance required to move further.BREATH - The continuity of deep, even breathing cannot be overemphasized in the Astanga Yoga system. When breath feeds action, and action feeds posture, each movement becomes gentle, precise, and perfectly steady.

According to the teachings of Sri T.Krishnamacharya and Sri K.Pattabhi Jois, "Breath is Life". Breathing is our most fundamental and vital act and holds a divine essence; exhalation a movement towards God, and inhalation an inspiration from God. Our last action in life is to exhale, which, in essence is the final and total surrender to God.

PRACTICE - It is said that where there is no effort there is no benefit. Strength, stamina and sweat are unique aspects of this traditional Yoga, seemingly contrary to Western perceptions of Yoga. This demanding practice requires considerable effort and taps into and circulates a vital energy throughout the body, strengthening and purifying the nervous system. The mind then becomes lucid, clear and precise; and according to Sri. K.Pattabhi Jois "Wherever you look you will see God." Only through practice will we realize the truth of what our guru often says- "Everything is God"

Surgical removal of the prostate gland is no fun. And there are side effects, including potential erectile dysfunction (ED) and incontinence. A relatively new surgical technique may reduce the odds of those unwanted outcomes — but men will want to seek an experienced, gentle surgeon, one who has done the procedure a thousand times.

The new surgery, done with the help of a robot, spares nerves that otherwise can impact the patient long term.

Just as with golf, apparently, practice makes perfect. Researchers discovered that the new procedure, performed by surgeons who have done at least 1,000 of them, help ensure outcomes with fewer side effects.

"It would be helpful for men who seek a surgical cure for their prostate cancer to appreciate the nuances required by a surgeon to successfully protect erectile function," said Dr. Jim Hu, director of minimally invasive surgery in the department of urology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and lead author of the study. "Like improving a golf swing, a technique for nerve-sparing surgery has many subtleties that are influenced by training, talent, a desire to improve, and meticulous review of technique and outcomes."

The results are detailed in the June issue of the journal European Urology.

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer, after skin cancer, in the United States. Radical prostatectomy, the surgical removal of the gland, accounts for half of all therapeutic treatments.

The study is "one of the first to characterize a surgeons' learning curve for improving erectile-potency outcomes and to demonstrate and quantify gentler handling techniques," the researchers said in a statement. What's gentle about removing a walnut-sized gland from, well, you know where? A good surgeon minimizes stretch injury to the nerves around the prostate as it's removed.

Greater surgeon experience and a more delicate approach helped improve erectile function significantly. After five months, patients went from zero to as high as 33 percent in erectile-function recovery and at 12 months post-operatively, they went from 15 percent to as high as 59 percent.

"These are very good outcomes for the early months after surgery," Hu said. "Most men will continue to see erectile-potency improvements up to two years after surgery, so we would expect to see even better outcomes by then, especially if surgeons are effectively adopting the newer nerve-sparing techniques."
