You can start by finding a pulse point on your wrist or neck and using that to time your inhales and exhales. It is simple, and it takes only a bit of practice to master. By listening to your heartbeat, you strengthen your heart.

This practice of synchronizing the breath and heartbeat creates a powerful rhythm in your body that strengthens your heart by creating entrainment in your heart rate variability. In addition to the many heart benefits you will quiet your mind. In this meditation practice we focus on our heartbeat or pulse which is the primary clock for the body. The pulse is a much slower rhythm than the mind. So placing attention on our heartbeat has the effect of slowing our minds and making us aware of our internal clock. This is comforting.

As your breathing becomes slower and deeper and quieter and more rhythmic you will feel the effects of oxygenating your blood with a full breath. Your whole body will feel energized from this. 5. Pulse and Heartbeat. Hold the breath after a complete inhale a few seconds and see if you can feel your heart beating in your chest. In addition, find a contact point on your wrist or neck like a nurse would and find your pulse. The pulse is the echo of the heartbeat.6. Swinging Breath. Now as you exhale, count the number of heartbeats or pulses that you feel and try to exhale for 6 or 8 beats. Then inhale for 6 or 8 beats. This makes your inhales and exhales the same length, as measured by your pulse. Enjoy the synchronicity of breath and heartbeat. This is home-base for heart rhythm meditation. Full, conscious breathing with awareness of pulse/heartbeat. Try it for 5 or 10 minutes at first and you will probably get it and feel it and enjoy it! Then try and work up to 20 minutes over time. This is the beginning of your new meditation practice.

When I was first introduced to Buddhism in a high school World Studies class, I dismissed it out-of-hand. This was during the hedonistic days of the late '60s, and this spiritual path seemed so grim with its concern about attachment and, apparently, anti-pleasure. Buddhism seemed to be telling me to stop seeking after romantic relationships, forego having good times with friends, avoid the highs of marijuana and give up my adventures in nature. In my mind, freedom from desire would take the fun out of life.

Years later I would realize that the Buddha never intended to make desire itself the problem. When he said craving causes suffering, he was referring not to our natural inclination as living beings to have wants and needs, but to our habit of clinging to experience that must, by nature, pass away, and that relating wisely to the powerful and pervasive energy of desire is a pathway into unconditional loving.

I first saw a glimpse of this possibility many years ago in what might be considered the hotbed of desire: romantic relationship. I'd been divorced for several years, and had met a man who seemed to be exactly what I was looking for. In our few casual encounters something had clicked and I was infatuated.

In the midst of the typical rush and excitement of such connections, I left for a weeklong meditation retreat. In the six years that I had been practicing Buddhist meditation, I'd attended a number of such retreats and loved the states of clarity and presence I touched there. But this time, instead of settling into even a semblance of mindful presence, my immediate and compelling draw was to the pleasures of fantasy. I was in the throes of a full-blown "Vipassana Romance," as such fantasies have come to be known.

In the silence and austerity of retreat, the mind can build a whole erotic world around a person we barely know. Often the object of a VR is another meditator who has attracted our attention. In the time span of a few days we can mentally live through a whole relationship—courting, marrying, having a family together. I'd brought my fantasy person with me from home, and this industrial strength VR withstood all my best strategies for letting go and returning to the here and now.

I tried to relax and direct my attention to the breath, to note what was happening in my body and mind. I could barely complete two cycles of mindful breathing before my mind would once again return to its favorite subject. Then, with a stab of guilt, I'd remember where I was. Sometimes I'd look around and take in the serenity and dignity of the meditation hall. I'd remind myself of the freedom and joy of remaining present, and of the suffering that arises from living in stories and illusions.

This didn't make a dent—the fantasies would take off again almost immediately. Hoping to get out of my head, I tried doing longer walking meditations on the snowy paths surrounding the retreat center. As my mind churned relentlessly onward, I felt self-indulgent and ashamed of my lack of discipline. Most of all I was frustrated because I felt I was wasting precious time. This retreat was an opportunity to deepen my spiritual practice, and there I was, caught up in wanting and off in the future.

After several days I had a pivotal interview with my teacher. When I described how I'd become so overwhelmed, she asked, "How are you relating to the presence of desire?" I was startled into understanding. For me, desire had become the enemy, and I was losing the battle. Her question pointed me back to the essence of mindfulness practice: It doesn't matter what is happening. What matters is how we are relating to our experience. She advised me to stop fighting my experience and instead investigate the nature of wanting mind. I could accept whatever was going on, she reminded me, but without getting lost in it.

While often uncomfortable, desire is not bad—it is natural. The pull of desire is part of our survival equipment. It keeps us eating, having sex, going to work, doing what we do to thrive. Desire also motivates us to read books, listen to talks and explore spiritual practices that help us realize and inhabit loving awareness. The same life energy that leads to suffering also provides the fuel for profound awakening. Desire becomes a problem only when it takes over our sense of who we are.

In teaching the Middle Way, the Buddha guided us to relate to desire without getting possessed by it and without resisting it. He was talking about every level of desire—for food, sex, love, freedom. He was talking about all degrees of wanting, from small preferences to the most compelling cravings. I've always had a love affair with that particular quote. Today, while doing some organizing I came across my favorite quote again. As I looked at it, a higher level of awareness sang out a deeper meaning than I'd ever recognized in the past.

Realizing we are spiritual beings, we each have a Great Spirit within us crying out for a well-lived life without fear, without compromise, without limitation. You recognize that deep inner desire, don't you? It's greatness is specific to you, your desires, mine is specific to me, my desires. Initially, our spirit is always battling opposition from the opinions of others, media, peer pressure, and family obligations. Then I realized that there is more.

Just like that, a flash of insight revealed something I had never seen before. My Great Spirit has encountered violent opposition from my own mediocre mind! I was stunned with the insight. Our mind is a tool for the body and for the spirit. Identifying ourselves with the mind we entrap ourselves and the spirit becomes enmeshed in a battle for freedom! Wow! What a revelation I realized as I became aware of the mediocrity of my choices based upon my mistakes, my lame-brained thoughts of defeatism, poor self-esteem, bad-hair days, and so on.

All of a sudden, I see that I won't rely solely on the thoughts and opinions of others. I won't rely on the intellectual capacity of my mind, the same mind and intellect that can offer up rational excuses to not achieve just as easily as it can offer up excellent reasons to go for the gold. This is also the same mind that can perpetuate the emotional state of despair so the emotions will further feed the negativity of the mind. It is such a trap. The mind, in all of its intellectual prowress is mediocre on its own.

Here on in, I will engage in spiritual awareness, having command over the mind and the emotions. The spiritual awareness will harness these to! ols, the mind and emotions, and the Great Spirit within will inspire action and achievement like never before!

I don't understand how just sitting down is suppose to clear my mind and/or help relax me. Can you give me some insight here? Thanks!

Have you ever been skiing? I haven't been in years and have never been good at it. But I recently got talked into going and sought private instructions each day of the trip.

I quickly realized that if I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing I could easily be the next person being taken down the mountain on a stretcher hitched to the rear of a snowmobile.

I made myself focus solely on skiing the entire time I was skiing. It was a conscious discipline. There was no time to space off or let my mind wonder. And the funny thing was that I had an amazing time! It was great not having anything else circulating through my mind other than the task at hand and was so truly relaxing.

It's the same with meditation.

When you meditate you are disciplining yourself to think only about one thing, such as your breath or a simple mantra. On my trip I had disciplined myself to think of just one thing… skiing. Sure a little fear was a factor but it was a discipline nonetheless.

Every time my mind tried to drift over to something else I quickly brought it back to the task at hand. You do the same thing with meditation.

You have roughly 1,500 thoughts circulating through your mind every minute. You're never going to be able to stop thinking but you can focus your thinking.

Your mind will always be churning something; it's not a fault it's a natural part of the design.

Meditation is a way to assist you in mastering the machine if you will. When you continue to bring your focus back to just one thing it's extremely relaxing, calming, and clearing.

I hear a great deal of grumbling about how to position your body from many! people. Please don't let the arrangement of your body be a deterrent.

Sit in a position that's comfortable for you. Sometimes I will sit in a chair or on the couch with my head supported, my feet resting on the flooring with a blanket covering me. Other times I will lie on the floor with a small cushion under my neck and head, again with a blanket covering me.

You'll notice that as everything starts to slow down you'll start to feel cooler. I suggest covering with a light throw cover or at least keeping a blanket beside you.

I prefer to meditate in a cool, dimly lit room; it's simply more conducive to relaxation.

Sometimes I'll have soft music playing but many times I prefer white-noise; such as a floor or an exhaust fan from an adjacent bathroom.

Take a few deep breaths. I find these assist in calming and settling me into my meditation.

I prefer to meditate with my eyes closed. But many people prefer to rest their gaze on a candle, a statue or another stationary object in the room.

There is no right or wrong here so you decide what's right for you and change it as you desire.

To understand how to heal with the mind you must first understand how the mind affects the body. Hay, author of 'You Can Heal Your Life' says that "each one of us creates our experiences by our thoughts and our feeling…When we create peace and harmony and balance in our minds, we will find it in our lives." Consistent thought processes, such as fear, unforgiveness, hate and anger can manifest as physical ailments but these can also be changed and the body healed by creating new thought patterns by the use of affirmations. It is important to first find the root of the problem and that means turning off the numerous distractions the world has to offer and tuning within- to those feelings you push to the back of your mind, to those fears you are afraid to speak of but lace the words of your everyday conversations.

Secular Buddhism's new Buddha

Westernized Buddhism seems to be turning more and more towards materialism, if not hard scientism, which has become the unspoken modern lingua franca.  Foremost, it has a decisive bias towards non-materialistic, spiritual phenomena.  One of its cardinal tenets, it believes the brain and the self are the same, or if you like, the brain and mind are the same so that when the brain goes we go—there is no self (P. natthattâ).  In addition, there is no rebirth or karma.

For those of us familiar with the Pali canon, this sounds a lot like the teaching of the materialist, Ajita Kesakambali, who was a contemporary of the Buddha. 

"Ajita Kesakambali taught what appears to be a form of materialism, that there is no future life for us let alone repeated rebirth.  Mankind is formed of earth, water, fire, and air, which return to their elements after death.  There is no merit in good deeds (good karma) or demerit in wicked ones" (Paul Williams, Anthony Tribe, Buddhist Thought, p. 19).

Implied in Ajita's materialism, as with modern forms of materialism, is the belief that our mental life is born from a certain configuration of matter (e.g., biological matter).  But then what is matter?  Oddly, pushing to the very limits of what is meant by matter, matter cannot be defined except to go in a circle—it almost means nothing.  For example, matter is mass, mass is matter.  The best definition that we can find for matter is that it is resistance.  But this answer falls into the jurisdiction of metaphysics like the notion of force.  In other words, we are still in the land of ideas, not matter as a fact.

Switching gears, what Western Mindfulnesss have achieved is really the transformation of Buddhism into a kind of a humanist materialism.  From this perspective, Western Buddhism has invented a new kind of nirvana that is all about the total acceptance of death.  Our self along with the brain, after we are dead, will be no more.  Supposedly, in this state of peaceful nothingness, suffering cannot touch us ever again.

But all this rests on murky assumptions that matter, for one thing, is primary, not spirit, or the same, Mind.  If, on the other hand, there is the postmortem survival of consciousness, this materialist version of Buddhism is in deep trouble.  

Because of our ignorance (avidya) with respect to what phenomena are fundamentally composed of, in which materialism is still just a guess, we are caught in an almost inescapable trap of doubt and unsurety.  We cannot be certain that there is no postmortem survival of consciousness (vijñâna), as Buddhism predicts, in which consciousness will spontaneously interface with a more dense expression of its latent desires and presuppositions, which is rebirth (punarbhava). 

Western Mindfulnesss, for the most part, do not come to study Buddhism with an open mind. If they did, they would not wince when the word "rebirth" is read or heard.  The project of Western Buddhism is to forge a new religion using some older parts of Buddhism in which Buddhism is turned into a religion of death and mortality acceptance.  This is really the teaching of Ajita Kesakambali—not the Buddha.

The following three ways of thinking offer a place to start.

We are connected to each other and everything in the Universe.Modern science now confirms what mystics with the ages have told us. Everything within the universe is connected with everything otherwise. We are not only linked to one another. We are also connected to the home, the Earth. Consider a whole and it is parts. The universe is an incorporated whole. Each one of us includes a part to play in relationship for this whole. A sense of oneness is in the centre of being fully human and spiritually conscious.

The Earth community is a holy community shared by all living points. Its members belong to the entire universe. Nothing separates us. We require oxygen to survive, but don't allow it to be. Photosynthesis, the process that makes air, requires trees, plants and sunlight. For photosynthesis to create oxygen, earth and sun need the correct relationship with planets and moons within our solar system. Otherwise all living points freeze or melt down.

The more we know the more responsibility we must care for all life. We must vary from humans exploiting earth's resources to participating members of the life community. True progress must advantage all members.

We co-create our globe through our chosen relationships.We aren't isolated beings. We live in the participative universe. We must honor our very o! wn uniqu eness before we can respect the bond we tell others. Relationships are complex. But differences stimulate new methods for being. When we open our minds and broaden our minds, we may build diverse relationships. They expand us as people.

A highly stable ecosystem relies upon interdependent relationships. Members must meet their individual needs and preserve their very own existence. They also must have a balanced relationship inside the larger community. Both natural and human worlds need a balance between independence and interdependence. The challenge is clear. We must find methods to balance concern for our own interests with concern for the global family and Planet Earth.

We desire change only if we see its meaning for all of us.The human need for meaning underlies our desire to have change. We pay attention and make choices depending on what is called self-reference. Who tend to be we? What do we aspire to become? As human beings, our capacity with regard to self-reflection differentiates us from other varieties. But are we moving too fast to make use of our gift for reflection? Do we notice insufficient meaning only when faced with an emergency? How can we hear wisdom from within if we're never still enough to listen?

The story of bacteria reveals how living things adjust to preserve themselves. For 2 billion years bacteria ruled the planet. Healing the Body with Light

The human body is in essence a body of light, which was created first by God's divine intention which created the soul. The soul's divine intention to enter the world of physical form created the passageway through which God's light could manifest the miracle of conception and birth.

All of life is a miracle, and each precious soul you encounter is living proof of God's great love, which created the manifest and un-manifest universes. All possibilities and probabilities exist as One within God's divine mind. Within the infinite realm of possibility, God's light exists and actively participates within all of life.

God's light can be activated as a healing force within the human body, whenever you are sick or injured. God's light can bring healing, comfort, and can even completely transform even an apparently hopeless situation. Light can expand and open possibilities, and can support all other healing modalities you are using.

To activate the presence of God's light within your body, it is helpful to create a sacred space within your home that can be used for meditation, prayer and healing. Create an altar that expresses your innermost hearts connection with the divine. Keep it simple, clean and place it in an area that can be devoted to sacred activities.

Spend a few moments each day, or several times a day, quietly praying, meditating or sitting quietly at your altar. In time your altar will develop a vibration of light, and you will begin to feel this when you sit at the altar. The light will help you relax, and will aid you in your healing process.

When your body is fatigued, sick, or injured, you can rejuvenate and regenerate your body by sitting or lying in front of your altar and breathing in God's light. Place your hand over your heart and pray for healing, and then imagine God's light descending from the heavens and infusing your body through the top of your head. As you breathe, allow the light to circulate through your body.

You'll notice certain par! ts of yo ur body that will feel more tense, or that will be holding pain. Imagine the light deeply infusing these areas, bringing warms, comfort, and peace. The cells of your body know how to heal themselves, and God's light will activate these inner resources of healing.

As you do this regularly, you will begin to notice changes in your body and your health. The infusion of God's light will begin a process of self healing within your body. Sometimes, if your body has been out of alignment for a very long time, the healing process takes longer because the body needs to re-balance itself on all levels.

your body is not separate from your mind or emotions. In fact it could be said that your mind is your whole body! As God's light begins this healing process in you, you will find old memories and emotions form the past re-surfacing. Allow these to pass through your consciousness. See them, feel them, and then let them go.

At some point you may find it helpful to join with others who are in a healing process. If you have many challenges happening at once in your body, it will be helpful to work with a practitioner of healing arts who can act as a facilitator, helping to strengthen the light and support your body through the healing process.

In times past, healing was thought of as something separate from everyday life. Now, as spiritual consciousness on the Earth evolves and transforms, it becomes more clear to us that all of life is a healing process. When our bodies are in need of healing, God's light can provide stability, grounding in our primary reality as a soul, and a sense of peace, comfort and rejuvenation. God's light can support us and enhance all other healing modalities and treatments, and is available freely to all beings, because God loves us and is always present and available to support our lives.

We have routines for our workouts, for our children, for meals and holidays. Routines help assure that things get done. Choosing a great meditation routine will assure you take time for meditation - and meditation can assure the rest of your day is met with mindfulness.

Many people say they want to meditate but it is difficult to fit meditation into an already full day. Even a short meditation is beneficial and creating a routine for meditation can help to fit it into the day. Creating a routine takes awareness of your daily activities - to find the best time for meditating.

For some people, waking up ten to twenty minutes earlier than the rest of the household, assures quiet time for meditation. The routine becomes waking up early, meditating, and then carrying on with your other daily routines.

Morning is not the only time we can meditate - for some people the morning just does not work. If that is the case, choosing another time of day for meditation is possible. Perhaps there is time during the day (before children come home from school or when babies are napping) to begin a meditation routine.

For those who work, perhaps taking ten minutes at the end of the work day, before arriving home is the best time for meditation. Many people say that meditating in the evening, just before bed time is a great time to meditate and is a way to relax and fall asleep more easily.

A great meditation routine is a routine that fits with your lifestyle and your daily activities. The key to starting a routine is finding the best time for you considering your other responsibilities and activities and then making it a habit by meditating at the same time for 28 days, after which most people stay with the routine.

Lung Worm Infections on the Rise, CDC Says

The number of U.S. infections from fluke worms in the lungs increased dramatically in 2009 and 2010, according to a new report, which traced the increase to the raw crawfish that people ate during recreational river trips.

Nine cases of paragonimiasis — the medical term for infections with the parasitic worms — were reported in or around Missouri in 2009 and 2010, after all of North America saw only seven cases in the previous 40 years, the report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

People become infected with the fluke worms by eating raw crawfish. Seven of the nine most recent cases occurred after people ate the crustaceans while on recreational river cruises.

Because fluke worm infections are typically very rare in the United States, where shellfish is generally cooked before it is consumed, diagnosing and treating the patients was difficult, the CDC researchers said. Cases of paragonimiasis are much more common in Asian countries. The initial symptoms include cough and fever, and the infections are often misdiagnosed as tuberculosis, pneumonia, flu or bronchitis.

Most of the nine U.S. parasite cases were treated for another disease before the true cause of their illness was determined, according to the CDC report. Eight were men, and seven ate raw crawfish in conjunction with drinking alcohol.

All nine patients were eventually treated with the drug praziquantel, and seven od them recovered within three days. One patient experienced residual chest pain for four weeks, and recuperation was also slower for another patient, who had obstructive pulmonary disease.

Shellfish are the worms' hosts, and the prevalence of fluke-carrying shellfish in Missouri-area rivers makes trying to eliminate the parasite unfeasible, according to the report. Therefore, the public should be educated about the parasite and possible ways of becoming infected, and physicians should be more aware of the disease's presence, the CDC said.

Stress Relief Food

There has been strong evidence relating to the mind and body connection. This has the implication that the kind of foods that we are consuming on daily basis might have impact on the stress level that we are facing. Our bodies• natural response to the stress factors will be either enhanced or diminished by the nature of foods that we consume on daily basis.

A body that is under stress will not be able to function at an optimal level. Prolonged stress level has the effect of causing disruptions to the various bodily functions such as the digestive and the immune systems. What are the natural foods that are preferably consumed on daily basis? While there are certain recommended foods to relieve stress, at the same time, it is advisable to avoid consuming beverages such as coffee and alcohol. High caffeine intake while you are stressed might prolong and even aggravate the stress symptoms, such as heart palpitations, sleep difficulty as well as anxiety. On the other hand, consuming alcohol has the temporary effect of calming you down. Once the effect wears off, you will feel worse with such symptoms as headaches, not to mention that your stress is revisiting your life.

VegetablesVegetables are full of vitamins and minerals that will help maintain the body stress-free and healthy. They are a good source of anti-oxidants that will help in combating free radicals. Anti-oxidants help in the body• s reparation process and to reduce the occurrences of cancer. Green leafy vegetables are also a good source of fiber which will help to ensure the smooth functioning of our digestive systems and to minimize the occurrences of health issues such as constipation, colon cancers and polyps. Vegetables contain high level of water in their structures, causing them to be fat free and low calories. Naturally, consuming vegetables also help people in their weight loss programs.

Asparagus has high content of folic acid, which also acts as mood-stabilizing factor. Under stress, our body releases horm! ones tha t affect our mood. Consuming foods rich in folic acid and vitamin B will help in keeping our mood steady under stressful situations.

MilkMilk is high in anti-oxidants as well as rich in vitamin B2 and B12. Among the many benefits of vitamin B2 (also called Riboflavin) are treatment of migraines and headaches. It also helps in shoring up immune system and preventing stress and anxiety. On the other hand, vitamin B12 has beneficial effects which include decrease in fatigue and lethargy in the body as well as the reduction of stress and depression.

AlmondsAlmond has been considered as the King of Nuts. Almond is a good source of vitamin B2 and E. Similar to vitamin C, vitamin E has been known for its free-radical fighting property associated with stress. It is also good for brain development, weight loss, reduction of type 2 diabetes risk and the maintenance of healthy heart.

FruitsEating fruits is a stress-free way of introducing healthy food into your body. When hungry, grabbing your favorite fruits, such as orange, apple or banana is the healthier choice compared to consuming sweets and chocolates. Besides tasting good, the latter might also increase your energy level. However you might feel tired after the sugar rush.

TunaTuna was once considered by the samurai to be unfit to eat. In today• s Japan, the fish is one of the more popular dishes in the country. Tuna is high in stress-fighting vitamins such as vitamin B2 and B12. Other health benefits of tuna include the lowering of blood pressure and the prevention of Alzheimer and coronary heart disease. Tuna contains high level of omega 3-fatty acids (EPA and DHA) which are responsible for the maintenance of good brain health as well as strong healthy heart.

There are many other stress relief foods. The above examples are some which I enjoy consuming and has helped me in coping with stress. You might find the same benefits as well.
