Protection against skin cancer can be added to the list of health benefits that come with drinking coffee, a new study says.

Women who drank more than three cups of coffee daily were 21 percent less likely to develop basal cell carcinoma (BCC), compared with women who drank less than one cup of caffeinated coffee per month, the study showed. For men, this risk reduction was 10 percent.

"Most likely, the protective effect is due to caffeine," said lead author Jiali Han, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. People in the study who drank decaffeinated coffee did not appear to have a lower risk of developing the skin cancer.

Additionally, the researchers found that the more caffeinated coffee that people in the study drank, the lower their risk of developing BCC, the most common type of skin cancer.

But the findings don't mean that your cup of joe can substitute for daily sunscreen.

"I would hope that people would not decide to spend a lot more time in the sun because they are drinking coffee," said Lorelei Mucci, an associate professor of epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, who was not involved in the study. "There is a lot more about the prevention of BCC that we need to understand," Mucci said.

Caffeine and skin cancer

BCC accounts for about 80 percent of all skin cancer cases, according to the American Cancer Society. An estimated 2.8 million cases are diagnosed each year in the U.S., according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. BCC does not readily spread to other parts of the body, and so it is rarely deadly. Chronic exposure to the sun or ultraviolet radiation in tanning booths is the major environmental factor that causes BCC.

The researchers analyzed data gathered from 113,000 nurses and health professionals during two long-term studies. Study participants completed questionnaires about their diets, and provided information regarding their cancer risk factors, including family history of melanoma, sunburn reactions, complexion and exposure to direct sunlight. They were also monitored for signs of skin cancer.

Over the 20-year study, 22,786 participants developed basal cell carcinoma, while 1,953 developed squamous cell carcinoma and 741 participants developed melanoma.

The researchers found that the reduction in the risk of developing BCC seen in those who drank coffee was similar to the reduction in risk in people who consumed similar amounts of caffeine from other sources, including tea, chocolate and soda. Still, coffee was the major source of caffeine among the study population, accounting for 78.5 percent of all caffeine intake.

No link was found between caffeinated coffee intake and melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, or squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). However, because the number of study participants diagnosed with melanoma or SCC were small, it is unclear whether caffeine truly has no effect on these skin cancers, or whether more time would be needed to see an effect, Han said.

"In another 10 years or more, it may be clearer whether caffeine also helps stave off these other types of skin cancer," Han said.

The study is not conclusive — it showed an association, not a direct cause-and-effect relationship between caffeinated coffee and skin cancer risk. Although mouse studies have shown that caffeine may prevent the development of SCC due to UV exposure, there is still no direct, convincing data showing coffee prevents skin cancer in people.

Han also emphasized that while it seems likely the benefit of the coffee comes from caffeine, researchers cannot yet know for sure. "There are lots of compounds in the coffee, including antioxidants. The process of decaffeination can wash out other compounds in the coffee, so we cannot 100 percent tease out that caffeine is the only factor responsible for the effect," Han said.

Who reaps the most cancer-protective benefits from caffeine?

"Not everyone equally benefits from caffeine consumption," Han said. The researchers would like to investigate which genes may explain why some people gain cancer protection from drinking caffeine, he said.

Coffee has recently been found to lower people's risk of dying over a given period, and to decrease the risk of prostate, breast and endometrial cancer, said Mucci.

But the mechanisms at play in these conditions may be different, Mucci said. "For prostate cancer and endometrial cancers, the data show the same benefit of lower risk from caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee," she said.

Coffee influences several body processes — it has antioxidant effects, helps insulin regulation and may lower inflammation, Mucci said. "It may be that different components of coffee are important for different cancers."

The study is published today (July 2) in the journal Cancer Research; some of the results were presented at a 2011 cancer research meeting.

Pass it on: At least three cups of caffeinated coffee a day appear to protect against basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer, but more studies are necessary to confirm the association.

How to Meditate Better

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 12:00 PM PDT

Article by R.E. Sherman

Some Eastern Buddhists have sizable reservations about their Western counterparts. This is surprising to many, in light of all the favorable press Buddhism has received. Haven't countless people found calm in this hectic world through meditation? Buddhists desire world peace and compassion for all people, and they want to take an open stand for nonviolence. Buddhism is exotic and inviting. It shuns the violent, materialistic culture of the West. It offers the opportunity to tailor a unique path to becoming a better person, and, ultimately, to attaining enlightenment. Why would the Dalai Lama be hesitant about urging Westerners to become Buddhists?

Beginning with watered down Buddhism is easy. You choose the kind of meditation that feels good to you, and you select what you will meditate on. However, converting to Buddhism isn't just about beginning. It's about going deep into meditation and sustaining that depth....for a lifetime.

Many elements of Buddhism strongly attract people in the West. Elements of Buddhism very similar to Judeo-Christian teachings resonate with them. However, after delving more deeply, Westerners encounter some of Buddhism's distinctly Eastern elements and often balk, selectively. They pick and choose what they will practice and what they will ignore. Yet this cafeteria-style approach to spirituality may not work well. Many Western Buddha-seekers end up homeless-alienated from the Western traditions in which they were raised, and yet unwilling to adopt the Eastern ways of Buddhism sufficiently.

Patrick French, the author of Tibet, Tibet, noted: "I was... cautioned by the Dalai Lama's own refusal to proselytize. After long observation, he had decided that conversion usually led to confusion, and that without the support of the prevailing culture, it was hard to maintain your spiritual practice."

The Dalai Lama did elaborate on his precautions. He said, "Westerners who proceed too quickly to deep meditation should learn more about Eastern traditions an! d get be tter training than they usually do. Otherwise, certain physical or mental difficulties appear."

Difficulties? What difficulties? Lorin Roche, Ph.D., a meditation advocate who has specialized over the past three-plus decades in counseling people who have encountered problems after engaging in prolonged, intensive meditation, has noted some of these. They include depression, a feeling of being lost, trouble adapting to life in the city, finding it hard to be intimate with another person, weird health problems and panic attacks. Westerners have much higher expectations for happiness in this world, so there is a much greater sense of loss when someone commits to retreat from this world for a real stretch of time.

Dr. Roche teaches a form of meditation he believes avoids these problems. Just keep it simple, brief and consistent. Perhaps Buddhism is like a pain killer to Westerners. Taking a few tablets can do a lot of good, but swallowing a handful of pills and you better get your stomach pumped.

Dr. Roche does not see any need to convert to Buddhism or Hinduism to meditate more effectively. Most other major religions have long traditions in meditative practices. There is much that Westerners can learn about meditation from Buddhism...in order to strengthen their practice of their own particular form of Western religion. So why not leave it at that? Actually converting to Buddhism is a much more serious and mentally traumatic thing for Westerners to do than is commonly appreciated.

You may doubt that the Dalai Lama said the things quoted above. After all, hasn't he spent decades traveling the globe as the world's most visible Buddhist? While this is certainly true, what is not often fully appreciated is that one of his chief objectives has been to serve as a rallying point for the cause of the liberation of Tibet. Portraying Buddhism in the most positive light possible aids him in furthering the cause of the autonomy and welfare of the Tibetan people, for whom he has served as "the tem! poral an d the spiritual leader" for more than half a century.

We all have much to learn. Imagine Jesus giving a warning to American Christians similar to the Dalai Lama's precautions. He might say, "In the West, I do not think it advisable to follow Christianity-if that means subordinate my teachings to the base parts of Western culture." And he would be dead on.

The emptiness of the unconditioned

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 08:02 AM PDT

The notion of emptiness is certainly misused when the adept is taught that emptiness only consists in the abstract removal of conditioned things such as concepts.  The problem with understanding emptiness in this specific way is that it all but ignores unconditioned reality from which conditioned things arise so as to appear real.

Using emptiness this way eventually leads to the belief that nothing is real or the same, emptiness is the negation of all (sarvâbhâvat); even nirvana is included.  This becomes nihilism.

This procedure completely ignores the need of an introspective penetration into the very unconditioned substance of conditioned phenomena. In truth, the notion of emptiness should lead us to the unconditioned, for example, the Buddha-nature which is not empty of the unconditioned.

Turning to the Five Aggregates (pañca-skandha), emptiness also informs us of what the aggregates lack.  They are the very emptiness of the unconditioned which is also to say, they are the privation (shunya) of true nature (sabhâva/sasvabhâva).  By directly realizing the unconditioned it is neither absurd nor confusing for us to say the Five Aggregates are emptiness, that is, the emptiness of the unconditioned.  Confusion arises for those who harbor a wrong view of emptiness; who don't understand how it is to be properly used; who in particular, lack gnosis of the unconditioned.

Walking Meditation Is Meditation In Action

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 08:00 AM PDT

Article by Sarah Thomas

It isn't always necessary to sit in silence with crossed legs in order to meditate or benefit from the meditation. Walking meditation is an excellent example of this. Walking meditation requires the use of focus much in the same way as other types of meditation. The difference is that the focus is placed upon the walking experience.

With walking meditation therefore, we are mindful of the experience of walking; the movement of our legs, the movement of our arms. We focus upon the rhythmic motions of walking. Walking meditation also differs from traditional meditation in that we are aware of and participating in our surroundings. Whereas with the usual types of meditation, one withdraws into silence and closes the eyes. Obviously we can't do that with walking meditation because we need the eyes open to see where we are going and to watch for dangers and obstacles. So while we are focusing on the rhythm of our walking movement, we are also aware of the sights, sounds, and sensations around us.

It is actually easier for many people to focus and meditate in this environment, and therefore are more successful with walking meditation than with the more traditional sitting forms of meditation. It is easier to be aware of and focus upon your body while it is in motion; the experience can be powerful and a source of deep enjoyment.

A few different types of walking meditation have evolved; however walking outdoors is the most common. To give walking meditation a try, find an open space like a park or empty parking lot where you can walk safely for about 20 minutes without the worry of encountering traffic or crossing busy streets.

How to do walking meditation

Once you have selected the ideal location for your walking meditation, follow the guidelines below:

Begin by Standing

Begin to focus upon your body with the simple act of standing. Notice how your body feels and be aware of the constant little adjustments your body makes in order to maintain balance. Feel the w! eight of your body pressing through your feet and onto the earth.

Walk and Focus

Once you have placed your full awareness onto your body, begin the walk. Walk with your usual stride and pace, not too hurriedly. There is no need to try and change the way you walk, all you need to do is be aware of your body walking. Keep your focus upon your body and feel it moving. Be aware of your feet as one raises and then the other. Become aware of all the tiny little sensations in your body from the feeling of your feet inside of the shoes, to your knee as it bends to lift your leg. Stay relaxed, relax your eyes and just let the scenery flow past you. Your goal is to be relaxed and bring your focus onto your body.

Become Aware of Feelings

Once you are fully aware of your body, switch your focus onto the feelings or sensations that pass through your body; not necessarily emotional problems, but rather the overall tone of your feeling of the moment. Are you happy? Bored? In a hurry? Pass no judgment on the feeling and don't analyze it. Your goal is to just become aware of it and then move your awareness on.

Balance the Inner and Outer

Alternate your awareness between the inner, your feelings, and the outer, your body. Play with the awareness, and focus upon them in equal balance. When you are able to do this, your mind reaches a state of stillness and clarity. Your mind becomes calm. Your goal is to balance your awareness of the inner with the outer.

End by Standing

After you have completed the above steps and brought your awareness into a balance of the inner and outer, bring your body to a natural stop and once again experience yourself standing. Bring your awareness to the feelings in your body as you stand in place. When you are ready, bring the walking meditation to a close.

Selecting the appropriate location for your walking meditation will be an important consideration as you can imagine. It is not necessary to find a place of solitude, but you do need to find a loc! ation wh ere you will be safe if your full awareness is not upon the environment around you.

Spanking May Increase Risk of Mental Disorders

Spanking or hitting children as a means of punishment may increase their risk of mental disorders later in life, a new study finds.

Among adults, 2 to 7 percent of cases of mental disorders — including major depression, anxiety disorder and paranoia — are attributable to physical punishment that occurred during childhood, the researchers said.

The study did not include people who experienced maltreatment as children, such as such as physical or sexual abuse, or emotional neglect.

The study adds to a growing body of research showing that physical punishment in childhood can lead to poor mental health in adulthood, including increased risk of depression, suicidal thoughts and alcohol abuse. [See Embarrassing Punishments Hurt Kids.]

The findings suggest that eliminating all physical punishment of children would reduce the prevalence of mental disorders, the researchers said.

Spanking kids is common

Use of physical punishment with children is controversial, and the practice is opposed by the American Academy of Pediatrics. However, close to 50 percent of U.S. adults say they experienced physical punishment as children, such as being pushed, grabbed, shoved or spanked.

In the new study, Tracie Afifi, of the University of Manitoba in Canada, and colleagues analyzed information from more than 34,600 U.S. adults ages 20 and older, who were surveyed between 2004 and 2005.

Participants were asked, "As a child how often were you ever pushed, grabbed, shoved, slapped or hit by your parents or any adult living in your house?"

About 6 percent of participants said they experienced these forms of physical punishment sometimes, fairly often, or very often in childhood, without experiencing other forms of maltreatment.

Those who experienced physical punishment were 59 percent more likely to have alcohol dependence, 41 percent more like to have depression and 24 percent more likely to have panic disorder, compared with those who received no physical punishments, the researchers said.

Alternative punishments

Parents and physicians who work with children should be aware of this link, the researchers said. Policies should focus on ways to reduce physical punishment, including providing information on alterative discipline strategies, such as use of positive reinforcement for good behaviors, they said.

The researchers noted the study found an association, and not a cause-effect link. In addition, the study was limited in that participants were asked to remember their childhood experiences, which may not be entirely accurate, although research suggests people can remember negative events in childhood well.

The study is published today (July 2) in the journal Pediatrics.

Pass it on:  Reducing physical punishment may decrease the percentage of people who suffer from mental disorders.

To Thine Own Bucket List Be True

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Article by Walter E. Jacobson, M.D.

People want to make the most out of their lives. Duh.

What I find fascinating is the underlying assumption that, in order to make the most out of our lives, we must attempt daring and bold feats of power and passion.

Here's the point: What if that isn't true? What if "making the most out of our lives" isn't about amassing more experiences which glorify the body and fan the flame of ego and self-satisfaction?

What if our spirit, our consciousness, our soul is immortal, invulnerable and eternal, and that our only purpose for being here is to understand that we are all One, we are all connected, that we must "love ye one another," that there is nothing else to do, nothing else to amass, nothing else to accomplish? If that's the case, are we really making the best use of our remaining time here by doing more rather than being more?

A BUCKET LIST IS NICE. PERHAPS A SPIRITUAL BUCKET LIST IS BETTER

I suggest that for every bucket list entry we make of something physical we wish to accomplish, we also include one entry of something spiritual we wish to achieve. So now the question becomes, "What might we put on that list?"

We might choose to engage in behaviors that could awaken us to truths that have been hidden from our consciousness by our drive for material and physical mastery and control. Perhaps:

* A six month program of daily meditation and/or yoga.

* A six month program of abstinence from alcohol and drugs.

* A six month program of vegetarianism or veganism.

* A six month program of reading spiritual, consciousness-raising materials.

We might choose to engage in behaviors that unite us rather than divide us by finding:

* Ways to see the good in people despite the negative things they've done.

* Ways to forgive people we've refused to forgive.

* Ways to repair a relationship that has been damaged or broken.

Perhaps it would behoove us to put on the list:

* Ways to be more of a role model of right action! .

* Ways to be more of an achiever of good works that promote communication, compassion, peace, cooperation, prosperity and well-being for all.

* Ways to be more of service to others by giving our money, time and energy to the causes and needs of others without any regard for acknowledgment, thanks, compensation or consideration of any kind.

Perhaps each of us, as we compile our bucket list prior to heading off to that Great Big Google in the Sky, should remind ourselves of what Horace Mann once said: "Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity."

The Fourth Truth: There is a path that leads us away from suffering

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 06:00 AM PDT

I used to be confused about why the third truth came before the fourth. And I realize now that if I could not accept or believe that there was an end to suffering, I would not have trudged the path. After all, I would not have known what would be at the end of the path—or if there would even be an end. If somebody had described to me the path that would lead me away from suffering before telling me that there is an end in sight for suffering, I would have most probably had an attack of horrified anxiety. And convinced myself that the life I was living was much more manageable than stepping on to the path that would supposedly lead me away from suffering!

The path that continues to lead me away from suffering is the threefold path of ethics, meditation and wisdom.

Threefold Path Eightfold path
Ethics/Virtue Right Speech
Right Action
Right Livelihood
Mind Right Effort
Right Mindfulness
Right Concentration
Wisdom Right View
Right Intention

Ethics/Virtue

I cannot say how contented I have become, how much simplicity there is in my life, and how much stillness, too, since I have become more ethical. The five Buddhist precepts opened a door in my heart. They gave me tools to begin living my life differently. I remember becoming a mitra (a friend of the spiritual community) in my tradition. During my ceremony, I took on the five spiritual precepts. I knew as I recited them that they had given me a way to purify my heart. I took them on seriously, and recited the positive and negative forms daily for almost 5 years. Since my ordination in 2005 I have recited ten precepts daily. They have been the principals that have trained me to live my life with mindfulness. They are some of the tenets of right speech, right action and right livelihood: These are the five training principals that are universal to all lay Buddhist traditions. Many monastic communities can have as much as a 100 or more.

  1. I undertake to abstain from harming life. With deeds of loving kindness I purify my body.
  2. I undertake to abstain from taking the not given. With open handed generosity I purify my body.
  3. I undertake to abstain from sexual misconduct. With stillness, simplicity and contentment I purify my body.
  4. I undertake to abstain from false speech. With truthful communication I purify my speech.
  5. I undertake to abstain from taking intoxicants. With mindfulness clear and radiant I purify my mind.

(The positive and negative precepts appear as cited by Urgyen Sangharakshita.)

Mind

After a week of learning to meditate, I walked out onto the street and thought the whole world was changing. I had "beginner's mind." I paused and chuckled to myself as I realized it was I who was changing and that there was no going back. I had a glimpse of seeing things as they actually were. Meditation caused a revolution in my physical, spiritual and emotional self. I began to walk, think and pray differently. The practice of metta, cultivating loving kindness for (a) myself, (b) a friend, (c) someone I do not know, and (d) an enemy, continues to revolutionize my life. People I thought I would never speak to have come back into my life, because this meditation allowed me to forgive my enemies in the fourth stage (d). The fourth stage cultivated compassion in my heart for my enemies. As the hatred melted away, my self-hatred also melted away, and I am a much happier person. However, after my beginner's mind began to fizzle, the real work began. I had to apply right effort, right mindfulness and right concentration to develop my meditation practice. I committed myself to the path of transformation. I began TO study, took up a daily meditation practice and went on retreats. In 2005 I effectively went for refuge, hence placing the three jewels at the centre of my life. The ideal of enlightenment (buddha), the teachings of the buddha (dharma) and spiritual community at the centre of my life (sangha.) I had a lay person ordination into the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order. I was named Vimalasara (she who';s essence is stainless and pure), took on the Bhodisattva vow, the ten precepts, and a visualization practice. My mind had most definitely changed; no longer were my decisions based solely on my sexuality, skin colour or gender. My decisions more and more are based on my going for refuge to the three jewels.

Wisdom

This part of the path, right view and right intention, brings me back to the fourth truth. I continue to develop my understanding of these truths. The Buddha says everything we experience has three characteristics, which are known as the three marks of conditioned existence. He says all life is (a) unsatisfactory, (b) impermanent, (c) unsubstantial, and nothing is fixed at all. These three marks have impacted my identity. I am not so attached to my female self, black self, or queer self. I used to experience everything through these filters. Hence I was often not open to others who were not female, black or queer. I was often judgmental and reactive. Although they had been part of my raft to help me along my recovery, if I was to continue to grow I had to let go of my fixed identities. They were at the centre of my life, and one could say I went to refuge them to them.

Letting go of identities meant I had to forgive those people who discriminated against me. Let go of those people who tried to label me with black stereotypes such as 'intimidating, loud, aggressive, chip on my shoulder, athletic etc.' I continue to learn to have compassion for those people who continue to discriminate against me. Without forgiveness, there is no room for wisdom. We must let go of fixed identities, thoughts and grudges. Integrate self and let go of self. Wisdom stops me from settling for the life I live now, which is much better than what it was 15 years ago. Despite how far I have come, I am committed to further understanding the truth. Training my mind, opening up to the possibility of real insight, letting go of self, practicing forgiveness and cultivating transformation, for me is a life time service.

Since stepping onto the path, the three jewels have become what is at the centre of my life. The majority of my decisions are based on going for refuge to the Buddha, the dharma, the sangha.

The Path

So I am on a path that leads me away from suffering. But sometimes I fall off, I stumble, and sometimes I choose not to walk it. But I always get back on. Fear can eat away at my faith and keep me off the path. But my faith can also eat away at my fear, and keep me on the path. There is no vacation from the spiritual life—I must strive on. If I reflect on the day I first walked into a Buddhist centre 23 years ago I know there is no alternative to the path. The Buddha made it simple with the eightfold path: live by these principals and we will gain insight and, perhaps even enlightenment.

Tips On Purchasing Proper Buddha Statues. Important Factors To Be Considered

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 04:00 AM PDT

Article by Bimol

So, before buying an appropriate Buddha statue it's recommended to consider a few important factors.

1. Decide why you need to purchase.

Decision why you need a will help you to select the right one among the great variety of different sorts. Try not to listen to other people's pieces of advice of even beliefs, but listen to your soul. The major reason for you to purchase should be the desire to achieve inner peace and harmony. With the help of the buddha statues you can better understand and practice Buddha's teachings.

One can have different purposes while choosing. Thus, if you wish to feel true joy of life, you'll be recommended to buy a happy buddha or laughing buddha. But if you want to tame your mind with the help of meditation techniques, it's better to purchase a meditating. In case if you're just happy, buy a uddha statue just to decorate your room, it will add proper ambience to your room.

2. Don't confuse the buddhist statues with other religious statues.

Many religious statues look like a. For instance, Hindu Deities are similar to Buddhist statues but these statues have many differences in their meaning. So, consider the following pieces of advice in order to purchase true buddhist statues. First of all, study body positions as well as hand gestures of the statue. If you see hands resting on the lap this is more probably meditating buddha. If the right hand touches the earth it's shakyamuni buddha, the enlightened one.

3. Purchase Buddha statues from right places.

It's important to consider the place you're buying Buddha statues from. So, before buying one, it's highly recommended to learn where the Buddha statue is originally made. So, to get the genuine statue, avoid the replica of original art. You should be aware that the true artisans who create Buddha statues are originally from Nepal. From this country the art of manufacturing the Buddha statues was transformed to Tibet where it has become extremely popular. Many people think that B! uddha st atues originate from Tibet but in reality the root to creating these statues descended from Nepal. Shakya Artisans and Newar artisans belong to the original masters who have passed this unique art to future generations.

4. Check Up The Quality by Studying Face Painting.

You should know that face is probably the most important thing you shoud carefully look at while buying a Buddha statue. The more beautiful the face painting of buddha the better the quality of the statue is. Thus, buying golden Buddha, the face will be mainly painted with 24 k gold by a really skilled artist. Buddha's face should demonstrate compassion in general, and when you're looking at it you should feel respect for buddha from within.

5. The Ears Are Worth Your Attention!

Always look at Buddha's ears while choosing a genuine statue. The statue should have rather long ears which signify the true artistry behind.

6. Consider the carvings on the body of the Buddha

Carvings on Buddha's body also tell about the quality of the statue. Thus, high-quality Buddha statues have very beautiful carvings which show the most delicate artwork of an experienced artist. Usually, these artists originate from Patan, Nepal.

7. Major Types of Buddha statues

Before buying a statue, decide what kind of it you really need. You'll be offered to choose from Copper Buddha, Oxidized Buddha, Bronze Buddha, Golden Buddha, Antique Buddha, Wooden Buddha, etc.

8. Fill Buddha Statues with Mantras (Holy Chantings)

According to the teachings of buddhism empty statue kept in your house without mantras can significantly decrease health, peace, long life, and wealth. But if you fill it with mantras you're going to have prosperity, peace, good fortunes, and happiness. With the mantras you'll make the statue enlightened. Statues which are made in China or India can't be filled with the mantras, while those made in Nepal are meant for mantras to be inserted. Ask a Monk in local Buddhist Monastery to bless the st! atue.

Gregorian Chants & Buddistic Shómyó

A dialogue of two spiritual cultures based on the musical repertoire of the Buddhist and the Christian tradition - Schola Gregoriana Pragensis & Gjosan-rjú Tendai Sómjó(Buddhist Monks from Japan). Meaningful dialogue between religions is no doubt one of the most pressing challenges of the modern world. Developments over the past few years clearly confirm what a significant role this aspect of human communication represents. Despite breathtaking technological breakthroughs and the related trend of rational scepticism, man still remains a religious creature. Ignoring this sphere of human personality not only leads to an impoverishment of the spiritual culture of a nation, but also to mutual estrangement of nations. And so what a wonderfully enriching experience it is then two cultures meet in mutual dialogue rather than confrontation. View, listen & order the CD at www.kuk-art.com

The enchanting mysteries of Munneswaram Temple

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 03:00 AM PDT

Article by Pushpitha Wijesinghe

Located 80 kilometres north of Colombo in the district of Puttalam, the Munneswaram Temple is a leading religious site among the Hindu temple complexes of Sri Lanka. It is said to have been in existence since the 1000 CE and is one of the five ancient temples or Ishwarams of the region dedicated to the Hindu deity Lord Shiva. The massive religious complex comprises of five Hindu temples and one Buddhist shrine.

The central and the chief temple is devoted to Lord Shiva and is considered the primary attraction of the site. The opulent structure is also the largest of the six temples. There are two other important temples dedicated to god Ganesh and goddess Kali. The temple of Kali Mani is popular among the Buddhist as well as the Roman Catholics of the region. The temple revered by the Sinhalese is dedicated to Ayyanayake Deviyo, a powerful Buddhist deity.

The ancient legends involving the temple complex create a sense of mystery and enchantment making the grounds seems all the more secular. The Tamil legends talk of the epic battle between King Rama, the hero of the Ramayana and Rawana, the demon king of Lanka. It is said that the Munneswaram Temple was built on the exact place where King Rama prayed to Lord Shiva after his victory over the demon king. The Sinhalese believe that Munneswaram is where Kali Mani landed from India. The tale continues to state that another Sinhalese goddess prevented Kali Mani from devouring the people and made her settle in Munneswaram. The temple of Kali is thus associated with vengeance and sorcery.

The temple that flourished under the time of the Kotte Kingdom was destroyed by the Portuguese during its colonization of Ceylon. Although the Jesuits built a chapel over the temple foundation, the devout locals reconstructed the temple both times. The temple celebrates many festivals including the Navarathri festival and the Sivarathri festival. While the nine-day long Navarathri is held in reverence of Kali Mani, the Sivarathri is an overnight celebrat! ion held in honor of Lord Shiva. The grandest event on the temple's calendar is the Munneswaram festival, a four-week long celebration honored by the Hindus, Buddhists, Catholics and even the Muslims of the country.

The best time to visit the region is during the annual Munneswaram festival, held in the months of August and September, over the period of 28 days. As Munneswaram is a village accommodation is scarce. But superior lodging could be found at any Hotel in Negombo, further south, closer to Colombo. Club Hotel Dolphin is among the best Negombo Hotel and will provide a convenient stay during your visit to the sacred Munneswaram Temple.

Exercise For Healthy Fat Reduction In A Very gym

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 02:00 AM PDT

Article by qamar mushtaq

The gym provide you with every facility to produce the community within your body to shed pounds. To organize your body for losing weight you should combine all four sections of exercise right into a routine

The concept of the exercise programme will be to build the fitness of the body and NOT burn x level of calories. Sadly the calorie in versus out approach rule isn't followed and weight reduction relates to your internal health. To lose weight naturally you need to consume the specific foods for your health chemistry and perform exercise to construct your well being.

Cardiovascular (aerobic) training.

This refers to running, walking, rowing, cycling etc. Such exercises cause a rise in lung and heart activity. It makes sense improvements inside whole heart which expresses itself as increases in fitness, stamina along with the all around health from the body.

The bottom line is finding the intensity right so you are getting breathless and determing the best volume of aerobic practicing just what body needs.

I have seen lots of people looking to do 40 minutes cardio per session or burn 400 calories. That is missing the. You ought to make an effort to hit the optimal amount we would say is really a more 20 minutes for almost all average exercisers and try to accomplish this for a high intensity. This maximum time period limit will prove significantly more effective mentally and physically with regards to reducing weight

Resistance training.

Some time you have saved using a maximum of twenty or so minutes cardio can be utilized for weight training. Weight lifting produces hormonal changes in the body that creates shedding pounds easy, manageable as well as a natural part to getting fitter. The weight training builds the muscles tissue upwards and counters the stresses of day to day life.

The important thing to resistance training is ensuring that you are having a weight that can take someone to the stage that fatigue (can't lift anymore) before 15 reps! . This i s why many women make a mistake plus numerous men.

The exercises should be performed with dumbbells as this trains a lot more muscles concurrently which in turn produces a greater hormonal shift which is the step to shedding pounds. Please make an attempt to neglect the calories in versus calories out game because this is fairly irrelevant and instead concentrate on what your body needs. That is a solid strength training routine on the right intensity.

Flexibility training.

Stretching plays a crucial role in creating health by removing toxins through the body and restoring ideal posture. If your posture is ideal blood and nerve flow are at its handiest which will help the health of the organs thereby boost your overall health and thus help you lose fat more easily.

The main element to stretching is to locate a which muscles are tight and loosen these as opposed to stretching any muscle. Stretching includes the more common type stretching e.g. touching toes and active stretching

Core training.

This can be a strengthening of your muscles that offer the spine. A make of weight training it is actually classified on it's own because importance on your overall fitness.

A deep core is the first step toward strength inside body. It allows you to use heavier weights which ultimately improves your ability to reduce fat.

It also allows you to adopt an ideal posture naturally and thus prevents injury and improves the fitness of the entire body through increased nerve and the circulation of blood.

Structure of your respective training

It programme inside four areas have to be adjusted progressively to make sure you are experiencing the correct stimulus for your body to vary. Listed just to do the exercise can not work. Instead it's essential to challenge the entire body so that it is increasing in 'fitness' after each session. This produces the effect of what you would like ultimately - fat loss. To be sure the is increasing fitness after each session you ha! ve to ut ilize the principles of periodization.

Yoga Studios - How to Choose a Home For Yoga and Meditation

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Article by Rod K. Cotner

If you are new to yoga or new to the area and looking for a new studio to call home, there are some things you need to see when choosing a yoga studio. With the increasing popularity of yoga, there has been a notable increase in the number of yoga studios and exercise facilities, which have begun to offer yoga instruction. Since yoga is an unregulated area at this time, it is important to know how to navigate the sea of yoga teachers to ensure your safety, comfort, and success. Everyone can do yoga, but there can be health risks associated. With the same care you would in choosing a health care professional, you should put in the selection of a qualified yoga professional.

Getting Started:

When you start looking for a yoga studio, you will want to clarify what your intention is for doing yoga. Most studies report that students begin yoga because they want greater fitness. Others come because they seek a deeper integration between your body and spirit, seeking to work on the internal aspects of the physical practices. Others come because they are recovering from another sports injury and recognize that yoga can be safe and potentially therapeutic. Take a moment to answer the question, "Why do yoga? What I want from my yoga practice?"

Why are there so many different kinds of yoga?

Yoga is an ancient practice. It has been developed over the years; different yoga practitioners have created their own styles. Today, it is important to know what styles match what you want from your yoga practice and style that will keep you safe from injury. For example, styles that will ensure that the alignment is correct and that you are practicing according to their fitness level, or styles that are purely for exercise, compared to connecting the physical and spiritual.

Ashtanga-based classes in a whole series of attitudes, often performed at a robust pace, which emphasize the continuity of the movement and purification.Bikram Class consists of the same 26 poses practiced in a room heate! d to 105 degrees with humidity around 60 percent."Iyengar Classes focus on precision and correct alignment of each posture. Props are used to help alignment. Iyengar yoga is one of the most popular forms of yoga in the U.S. and Iyengar yoga styles include principles.Kripalu-The classes are very soft, focusing on mind-body awareness. Kripalu professionals emphasize the meditative aspect of the asanas.Kundalini classes emphasize rapid breathing techniques, chanting and mantra meditation. The aim is to open and awaken the kundalini energy stored in the base of the spine.Power yoga classes have a Westernized version of ashtanga yoga. Instead of setting a series of postures, however the classes vary from day to day and from study to study.Purna Iyengar Yoga classes have the precision and alignment while publicizing mild physical, mental, emotional and spiritual support to students to facilitate personal growth. This approach to yoga has the wisdom of the past and updated for future giving students real tools for healthy living.Viniyoga-Classes have a smooth and comprehensive method of yoga. Some flow is involved, but the pace is much slower than other classes.

What to ask:

Thus, we have clarified their intentions for practicing yoga, and have identified the style of yoga that most resonates with your intentions. Now is the time to pick up the phone and talk to some studios. Here are some questions that all studios should be able to respond to. If you cannot get an answer to these questions, know that you cannot be dealing with a professional oriented studio.

What to ask about the studio:

How long has your studio been open? Find a studio that has existed before the yoga trend hit big, about four years. What style of yoga do you teach? You should be well versed in the styles of yoga by now, and you can engage the representative of the study in an interesting discussion. Make sure the person on the phone can give an accurate description of the style of yoga in their studio.Do you supply any equipm! ent or d o I have to bring my own? To stay in good alignment, most studies provide props to support your body. How often is your studio and props cleaned? Cleanliness is an aspect of yoga.Do you offer workshops? It's good to find a studio that does more than asana practice classes, offering ways they can deepen their practice in other subject areas. When are classes offered? You must be able to get to classes without being inconvenienced too. What levels of education do you provide? Make sure the classes are tailored to beginner, intermediate or advanced, as opposed to "a single level for all." You do not want to be in a class that is not taught at your level.

What to ask the teachers:

What training do the teachers have? How detailed is their training? Make sure your teacher to be is trained in anatomy and physiology of the asanas, as well as therapeutic applications, contraindications and benefits of the asanas. Was their training repeated for several years, or simply a onetime course?Who trained the teachers? Were the teachers trained by the same person, ensuring consistency of instruction, or have they been from a variety of backgrounds? Is there a master teacher who trains the teachers in the studio, a base of study that the education stems from? How long have the teachers been practicing and teaching yoga? The experience, both in practice and teaching makes an excellent yoga professional.Do the teachers take ongoing teacher training and how often? It is vital that teachers continue to improve their skills, it also inspires their teaching and ensures growth for themselves and their students. Are teachers trained in the therapeutic applications of yoga? Does your prospect know how yoga can help heal after injury or strengthen their body through a health problem? The therapeutic benefits of yoga are so vast, that if you need it, you want to be sure that the teacher can provide it.

Putting It All Together:

Yoga is an art and a science. As an art, it is sophisticated and as complex as classical! music. As science it is as complex and precise as physics. Joy is in its infinite exploration. Equipped with a greater awareness of what makes a successful yoga studio and teacher, your options should support you to move into greater joy. Go and explore the many joys and challenges from the profound art and science that is yoga.

Homeopathy and Sex

Posted: 01 Jul 2012 10:00 PM PDT

Article by Robert Bruce Baird

Homeopathy: It is a wonderful thing to have the Joy of Learning and to make a career that you find is related to your studies. There are so many ways to get a Doctor label and thus claim expertise in the many fields and disciplines which we have broken knowledge into. Some of this is counter to real expertise and much of it just sets people apart from knowledge and each other. But people are also being segmented into classes within the hierarchy of government backed by and for elites in all so many ways. Medicine has been one of their more dastardly tools alongside religion. This next little factoid reminds me of how Edward Gibbon almost died because the British Medical system would not approve vaccinations through use of scabs as had been done by the likes of Paracelsus or others in antiquity and which was approved in the France of his era. "When the Cholera epidemic reached England, it provided another opportunity to compare homeopathic treatment with the conventional methods of the day. Regular allopathic medicine yielded a mortality rate of 59 percent compared to only 16 percent for the Homeopaths. (1) When these statistics were collected, the information was so startling that a medical commission was sent to the London Homeopathic Hospital to check the records. Though the data were duly verified, it was decided not to make them public, and the facts were not released until a hundred years later." (2) The formation of the American Medical Association is a major issue against alternative healing or real care for people. In the late 19th Century as these issues were becoming apparent there were many who knew that the allopaths or medical doctors selling laudanum and the like were actually the 'Killing-trade'. There are signs that stress management (don't fret - sweat or exercise) and the connectiveness to the 'all' around us are again making a play to be considered in health maintenance. Vitamins and supplements are able to prove to even the most duped person receiving medical care that they wor! k and ye t some doctor's groups and the governments that back them still disqualify doctors who advise their usage. Academics are subject to a 'Knowledge Filter' (Berkeley Law Professor - Johnson) or Literary Theory (UBC English Professor Graham Good) and the outright suppression of creative or thoughtful and meaningful potentials. (3) The concept of Bucky Fuller called 'the observer of the observed' and his more detailed 'creative realization' is part of what operates as we 'project' upon reality. For example the things we see are actually a mixture of fields of energy from the dross and less excited to the highly excited or vibrational energy inside the atomic structures. One way of visualizing this includes an aura, which is the field of energy not usually visible but associated with the solar body and integrative centers called chakras. Perhaps we could contemplate a time when all people had the ability to see or sense auras. In our socially normed 'projections' that include telling our children certain things do not exist, we have lost the conscious integration or incorporation of these fields of reality. Psychic surgeons in the Philippines and Brazil have had their energy measured during operations at the same vibration rate of 7.8 cycles. It started me thinking about how we can alter our state and how others might perceive us in these altered states. Clearly if anyone could see all the spaces between our electrons and the nuclei or between the different atoms and molecules we wouldn't seem solid by a long shot. Thus these surgeons who use no utensils would be able to energize the infected or diseased body part or tumor to remove it at an altered vibration level. There have been solid documentaries with such credible support as X-rays before a San Francisco businessman had such a tumor removed and X-rays a year later showing it hadn't returned. In the end you must decide who has the most to gain from the arguments and whether or not you want to actualize your own potential. Once you do a few things the debu! nkers sa y are impossible - then a smile will come to your face; and the intellectual conflict loses all import. String Theory knows about the harmonic forces that are less than solid which somehow combine to make what we perceive as a solid. The astrophysicists now have told us that 95% of the universe is 'Dark Matter' or 'Dark Energy' - so get with it before you are invisible and don't know it! Just kidding! We fear that which we cannot fully comprehend and our experts or priests and doctors include many enablers of our fears. We even allow fear to pre-empt love; which is ironic because at the end of our lives it's not the fears or the differences that matter the most but whether we loved and allowed ourselves to be loved as much as possible. "Every new perception of knowledge is always based either directly or indirectly on older knowledge. InteliTapping allows us to connect with the oldest, yet most complete source of knowledge." (4) Nature produced a show on the origins of music and the biological and archetypal impact it has had on our evolution and emotional wherewithal. Along with reed instruments from as long ago as 60,000 years that obviously show sophisticated development of technology, they had the cave operas of those who rubbed and drummed on stalactites. They posited that the tree-swinging hominid that like the Sumatran Gibbon co-ordinates community for protection through territorial chants, is not so much less aware as most of our great Lockean influenced academics seem to be. These animals also learned what plants are dangerous and what plants alter your spiritual consciousness. You can see it when your puppy goes outside for the first time and chews on some grass to settle its tummy. Our genes contain a lot of information or the ability to tap-in to much knowledge. The buzz you get from 'weed' is the buzz coming from your Thalami and Third Eye or Pineal gland that has a crystal radio receiver and grains or crystalline structures. Crystalline structures like quartz were known to be useful in the! Lost Ch ord of the Druids and more ancient shamans. There are magnificent quartz caves in Central America and other places that would have been used by early hominids for a certainty. The Best Body Language - Sex: Long before Tantra or Bhakti Yoga there were many things ancients probably learned from intercourse, even more than most people do today. Today we have drugs like Viagra to enhance the longevity of the sexual encounter. The Mayans have natural drug for this. There are so many things which keep us busy or deflect us from spiritual insight as is noted in many Eastern systems which refer to the 'busy-mind' or samsara and the illusion of Maya. Second degree Wiccan students who have advanced through a rigorous training in esoteric knowledge begin a quest that many would regard as perverse pursuit of pleasure and self-gratification. The partners are often involved in other committed relationships. When a man and a woman who are interested in spiritual growth combine to experience the Tantric or Bhakti (Yoga) or ritualistic growth potential to free more than just their personal self or ego to reach the heights of spiritual or psychic possibilities; who can say what is real and what is imagined. This effort to commune with spirit is termed 'working partners' and the allies or guides is who they really seek to merge or work with. The imagination is undoubtedly a part of the dynamic. It isn't necessary for them to care for each other in the way lovers do. I have not done this 'work'. Many people talk about 'soulmates' or 'dual flames' and the words become mere shadows of the real potential. At the same time sex is a dirty 'word', and act, in much of society. What can a writer say to convey the essence of all these things? If I absolve myself from the challenge of integrating these concepts, rituals and soulful realities I would simply say trust your soul and know that wherever you may go you will find something more than whatever you thought was real to begin with. If I talk about 'la petite mort' or empathi! c attune ments with the soul of the partner that allows the self to disintegrate and become part of something larger than one person; and almost dissolve in the vastness of spirit - it will only seem like prose and poetry. The phrase 'la petite mort' or 'the little death' can in fact lead to a Kundalini type experience which can cause death. Of course, one can wax eloquent and carry on at length about any of their hopes and desires. The essence of a great working partner most probably has little to do with these aspirations and more to do with the way the soul interpenetrates all people. The glimpses of insight gained through empathy and love with those who shared my needs are special to me and will forever stay in the part of my soul (if there is such a part) that cherishes all we were and hungers for what we could have been. To deprecate the witch who 'draws down the moon' into their partner on the path to worship of things no one can fully know is the stuff of fearful and insecure people. That kind of bigotry without actual experience is rampant in all areas of society. It is truly just the tip of the proverbial iceberg when one contemplates all the ways mankind has developed to separate himself from what we are collectively and what god truly wishes for us to realize. No amount of constant seeking or obsession with these pursuits will ever get a man any closer to his soul than what he was while in his mother's womb. The joy and creativity of the challenge to know is as great a gift as our maker can give us - except perhaps the acquiescence to the soul within the loved one you areblessed to have the chance to know and share your life with. In the moment of creation each day as we grow and learn to be, we are forever drawn by some force that seeks greater harmony and purpose for all energy. Many (if not most) people think the 24 hour orgasm is like alien abductions but the EEG and other ways of measuring physical responses would convince them otherwise. A similar number of people find the misus! e of Tan tric Yoga by the likes of Crowley and Hubbard is tantamount to whatever is evil in man. I say they are right, but that is not the fault of Tantric Yoga. These techniques are very seductive and in some ways the participants would choose to have the experience even if they knew a great deal about it because it is a sad truism that Masters and Johnson or Kinsey are right. They say a full third of women never have an orgasm through intercourse. Many people seldom enjoy sex and some significant number of the rest of us are in varying stages of poor to decent ability and openness to what great learning sex can provide. It could be said that our sexual relations are a good barometer of the state of society. I favour sex education and all the opportunities and responsibilities that go with the natural and soulful functions of the act. It is easy to understand why some people are hesitant to have strangers teach their loved ones about sex. But Father Leo Booth is right when he notes that parents who repress their children or foist suppressive behavior upon them are just as guilty of abuse. 1) Rudolph Ballentine, M. Wat Ounalom – The Heart of Cambodian Buddhism

Posted: 01 Jul 2012 09:00 PM PDT

Article by Pushpitha Wijesinghe

Summary;The Wat Ounalom is a Buddhist Temple that is said to contain an eyebrow of Lord Buddha himself, making it exceptionally sacred in the country. Dating back to the Angkorikan times, this Wat gives plenty of insight into Buddhist culture and philosophy.Content;

Cambodia is a country with Buddhism etched in their culture, lifestyle and fortunes. The heart of Cambodian Buddhism is the Wat Ounalom. Established in 1443, this temple is sacred in every sense of the word. Protecting a Stupa supposedly containing an eyebrow of Lord Buddha himself, thousands of visitors flock each year to admire this sacred Wat.

Magnificently seated on Sisowath Quay in Phnom Penh, the Wat Ounalom can easily be located near the Royal Palace of Cambodia. The Wats main vihear constructed in 1952 is still rather intact and is an interesting place to explore. With 3 floors depicting in-depth Buddhist history, teachings and philosophies one would get a real spiritual insight while touring these halls. The first floor in particular is a famous attraction as it houses beautiful colorful paintings that gracefully illustrate the lives of Buddha. The large stupa called the Chetdai is the central feature of the Wat. This Stupa dates back to the Angkorian times and is what is said to contain a hair from Buddha's eyebrows. The Wat is also well known for the beautiful bronze sculptures of Lord Buddha. Held in 4 special niche rooms these are indeed magnificent to see. The whole sanctuary is dedicated to the Angkorian king Jayavarman VII . Unfortunately the original version of this temple with its many historical bounties was almost completely destroyed during the Khmer Rouge. It is indeed magnificently refurbished but before 1974 this temple was quite famous for its Pagoda Monastery which housed almost 500 monks and the Buddhist Institute which had a rich array of literature amounting to almost 30,000 titles. Sadly only ruins are left of these remains.

A tour to Wat Ounalim not only gives you a beautiful insight i! nto Camb odian Buddhism but also affords you some scenic landscapes along the way that is mind soothing in itself. The Tonle Sap River amidst the Wat Ounalm is especially magnificent during the sunset and is definitely worth the view. After a fulfilled day touring the Wat an ideal place to wind down will be a comfortable hotel. Many a hotel Phnom Penh offers have many little attractions and the best way to see them all would be from the Raffles Hotel Le Royal, a star class Phnom Penh Hotel , which will give you an exotic taste of the cultures, religion and attractions of this city.

Meditation The Easy Way To Relieve Stress

Posted: 01 Jul 2012 08:00 PM PDT

Article by Jeff Hansel

Have you ever been so stressed out from work, kids, relationships or the other millions of things that you just want to pull your hair out? I know you have, we all have. When we are upset by someone at work or in society, danger signals are sent to our brain and our heart starts beating faster and our blood pressure rises. However, we don't usually run away and we usually don't start fighting physically. We hold it all in, perhaps showing a smile on the outside. If this is kept up all day, the stress builds and if it continues over a long time it can damage our heart. There is a very easy, relaxing solution to relieve the pressures of modern day life, and it has been there the whole time, its meditation. Many people all around the world use different techniques to meditate but the end result is very similar - "Relaxation". One of the most popular ways is by listening to meditation cds. You may be thinking you just don't have time to meditate, but trust me if you just start making a few minutes a day to lock yourself away and find the peace within yourself it will be well worth its weight in gold. If you just start out meditating for a few minutes at a time and stick with it you will find that it is so enjoyable and relaxing you will find it is hard to pull yourself away from it. You'll soon find that you look forward to grabbing your favorite meditation cd and sitting back to seek peace and harmony. To practice meditation we don't need to follow a particular religion; anybody can meditate, the only requirement is our conscious aspiration to silence the thoughts of the mind. In fact, one of the important aspects of meditation is that it is a form of sense withdrawal. When you become adept at this technique it relieves stress and is just as effective as going away to the top of a forested mountain or sitting alone on a sandy beach. You'll find that many meditation cds will take you away to beautiful special places in your mind...more beautiful than you can imagine without experiencing it yourself. The! re are m any positive results that you will get from meditating, besides just a relaxation tool. If you can teach yourself to focus on goals you would like to achieve or something you would like to improve about yourself you will find many answers to a great number of things in the silence of meditation. For thousands of years people have been using this method to obtain the things that they want and the things that they dream of. Many great leaders in history and very successful people have been using meditation to do their most productive thinking and soul searching. Some say there is no connection to the universal energy like the one you will find when develop the skills of a very deep relaxing meditation. Walking meditation is also becoming more popular these days because you can get both mental and physical benefits and some say it is more effective as it is easier for most people to be more intense and more easily aware of their bodies while walking, as compared to sitting. It is truly amazing some of the story's I have heard about people that have overcome illness and many other disorders with simple meditation. A real possibility of a compassion and wisdom-based world exists, replacing the fear-based world that we find ourselves living in, but it has to begin with each of us taking the time to understand our "selves." It is one thing to talk about peace and love but it is only when we meditate that we can experience these qualities as a living reality. Our ability to meditate is not some special skill out of human reach. Every human being looking for peace in life should practice meditation and experience how it will relieve mental stress and suffering. To find out more about meditation and get some very helpful tools including some wonderful meditation cds to get you started in finding real inner peace go to http://www.easy-meditation-cd.com.

Buddhist Chanting - Nothing But Everything (Japanese)

Shingon Teaching Shingon is a form of Japanese Esoteric Buddhism, it is also called Shingon Mikkyo. This school was founded in 804 AD by Kukai (Kobo Daishi) in Japan. The teachings of Shingon are based on the Mahavairocana Sutra and the Vajrasekhara Sutra, the fundamental sutras of Shingon. Through the cultivation of three secrets, the actions of body, speech and mind, we are able to attain enlightenment in this very body. When we can sustain this state of mind, we can become one with the life force of the Universe, known as Mahavairocana Buddha. The symbolic activities are present anywhere in the universe. Natural phenomena such as mountains and oceans and even humans express the truth described in the sutras. The universe itself embodies and can not be separated from the teaching. In the Shingon tradition, the practitioner uses the same techniques that were used over 1200 years ago by Kukai, and have been transmitted orally generation after generation to the present. As Shingon Buddhists, there are three vows to observe in our lives: May we realize Buddhahood in this very life. May we dedicate ourselves to the well-being of people. May we establish the World of Buddha on this earth. Becoming a Buddha in This Very Life (Sokushin Jobutsu) The unique feature of this Shingon Teaching is that one does not become a Buddha only in his mind, nor does one become a Buddha after one has died. It means one is able to attain perfection of all of the qualities of a Buddha while one ...

Guided Meditation Online - Can We Trust The Internet?

Posted: 01 Jul 2012 07:00 PM PDT

Article by Susan Masters

The Internet is, without any doubt, the greatest invention of the millennium. No one can deny the power of this technological medium to bring people together, to create bonds, to stimulate minds, to increase our informational backgrounds, or to teach us different things, such as the guided meditation online. Yes, indeed... This is possible, even though it seems hard to believe. Internet thus proves to be not only a direct source of entertainment but, most importantly a means of developing our inner selves through meditation.

What Does Guided Meditation Online Mean?

We all know that the Internet in not only instructional, but also a perfect means of discovering new methods that can help us learn the meditation techniques. This is made possible by the guided meditation online that refers to all the information and the tips that the specialists in teaching meditation provide for all the users. It might sound quite strange, but you can learn how to meditate only by surfing on the Internet.

The Internet is one of the most helpful sources when it comes finding as much information as possible. Even though there is a wide and complex range of books on yoga and other meditation practices, the Internet can offer the same thing: plenty of web pages that belong to specialists in the field. They wish to enlarge this community of people who seek help and refuge in meditation. This is, after all, what the guided meditation online is all about.

Which Are the Advantages of the Guided Meditation Online?

Needles to say more, the Internet is a force that promotes and develops. Although meditation is an abstract practice that cannot really be defined in words, there are several tips and clues that the Internet provides concerning the methods that can be used in order to better reach that state of relaxation that leads to meditation. One of the most important attributes of the guided meditation online is that it creates a direct connection between the specialist in meditation techniques a! nd all t hose users who present a true interest in meditation and who really wish to meditate in a useful manner.

Are There Any Disadvantages Related to the Guided Meditation Online?

Unfortunately, when considering using of Internet as a source of information on meditation techniques, there are some flaws that must be known. In the first place, not all sources are truly and completely reliable. This happens because there are people who have not conducted any kind of research on the topic. But, of course, there is no risk taken in trying out all the methods that appear on the Internet. The only problem here is that some practices might be a waste of your time, and, probably, this is not what you need.

In the second place, not all the practices that appear on the Internet are instructional or useful. Some of them are worthless, but don't discourage yourself. You do have great chances of finding some really good advice as long as you can guess which information you can select from the multitude of data that appears on the web pages. You do have to realize that guided meditation online can be misleading, but there are, in fact, slim chances for you to find any harmful advice or tips.

Chirosports Coogee - When the Sticking Point of Losing Weight…. is Stress

Posted: 01 Jul 2012 06:00 PM PDT

Article by Michelle Thomas

An inability to burn excess fat when you are stressed is more common than many people think. Sadly, you can be diligent in adhering to your weight loss guidelines and still the kilos do not budge. Understanding how stress and excess weight interact when you are trying to lose weight can be the difference between frustration and success. If you are experiencing stress your hypothalamic pituitary adrenal function, which is also known as your HPA system is activated. When this system switches on, or in the case of long-term stress, stays on, you are releasing the stress hormone cortisol. In your body, cortisol has an important role organizing systems and organs in various situations and it has a role in regulating your metabolism. Another aspect of the HPA system is that it releases a number of chemical neurotransmitters, and one of these is adrenalin. The chemical neurotransmitters activate an area inside your brain called the amydala which controls your emotional response to the stress you are experiencing. This emotional response could be fear, sadness, overwhelm and other feelings including anxiety. In addition, when you are stressed your brain releases a small protein called Neuropeptide S that is designed to regulate your stress by increasing your alertness and sensitivity, increasing your anxiety and urgency and reducing your sleep. The relentless interaction of HPA in longer-term stress leads to several issues that impact weight gain, and the ability to burn fat.Increased Neuropeptide S has the effect of decreasing sleep and sleep quality. If you are being chased by a vicious dog then Neuropeptide S is good, however, if you have high levels of this protein all the time your body is ready for 'fight or flight' and quality sleep is hard to come by. A 2010 study of 35,000employees of a Japanese electric power company showed that those who slept five hours or less pernight were twice as likely to gain weight as those who slept seven to eight hours. Poor sleep quality also down regulates metabolism ! as your body tries to store energy to deal with the anticipated needfor extra resources to fight the stress. In a 2004 study by the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort a link was found between sleep deprivation and the hormone ghrelin. Excess ghrelin also called the 'hunger hormone' is found in people who have poor sleep and this hormone was found to increase hunger by more than 15%. [1]Ongoing high levels of adrenalin also inhibit fat burning. Many people have heard the term 'adrenal exhaustion', which can occur in people who are stressed. In this condition the body seeks more energy and will achieve this by increasing appetite or storing fat. If your adrenal system is overloaded and you reduce your calorie intake to reduce weight, the adrenal function will act to store your fat reserves so even the reduction in your calories may not help you burn fat.WWW.CHIROSPORTS.COM.AU | TEL. 02 9398 3699 | 166 CARRINGTON ROAD, COOGEE NSW 2034 | © CHIROSPORTS COOGEE PTY LTDHigh levels of the stress hormone cortisol are linked to weight gain and fat retention around the belly. Cortisol also increases cravings for carbohydrates as it decreases the serotonin levels in your brain. Unfortunately, while stress levels are high and cortisol is also high, efforts to burn fat through changes to nutrition and exercise can be thwarted. The long-term news for stress sufferers in addition to the weight loss battle is reason enough to look at reducing stress as a priority. In the US, Medical Doctors in training are taught in their first semester of Medical School that 75% of all the illness they are likely to see in practice will be stress related. Stress and the lifestyle implications of stress are attributed to be the leading causes of accelerated ageing, obesity, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers. In clinic the solution is to look at stress from 3-angles: a scientific perspective, an emotional / behavioral viewpoint and at the same time look at weight loss goals in order to break the cycle. Science aside, when you are unde! r pressu re and stressed your body effectively tries to 'hold on tight' and this includes storing fat. You want comfort, hence the term 'comfort food' and lets be honest fat and sugar taste delicious. It's hard to exercise when you are so exhausted you can hardly bring yourself to cook ameal. However, maybe you are not eating or skipping meals due to stress. This is also counter-productive for your metabolism and weight loss goals.Lifestyle aspects of stress need to be addressed but to start with a 'circuit breaker' can often increase early fat loss and improve general feelings of happiness and relaxation. There are a number of simple strategies that I have seen achieve some great results in clinic including some specific nutrition based supplements and activities that help stress sufferers reconnect to being grounded reducing the negative impacts of stress on the body's optimal function. Increasing the flow of vitality and energy in the body, changing nutrients and increasing absorption while reducing the impact of stress hormones then allows the excess weight to truly move. Given that 30% of people who want to lose weight attribute stress as their biggest limitation in achieving their goal, it is helpful to know that the reason is scientific and that there is a solution.

What is Reiki All About?

Posted: 01 Jul 2012 05:00 PM PDT

Article by Mike Herman

Reiki is a healing method that became popular in the Western cultures beginning in the twentieth century. It is an ancient healing method that has been used by the Japanese for several centuries. Through Reiki, many people will experience healing, balance, relaxation, and transfers of energy. By knowing how Reiki works, you will be able to use the technique in order to change your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual conscious levels.

When one begins to use Reiki as a practice, there are several principles that are used as guidelines. This will help the understanding of the use of energy to be taught at a higher level. By allowing the principles to be a part of the practice, one can use the energy for spiritual and mental healing easier.

Reiki is known to be a transfer of energy from external to internal environments. The practice began as defining a universal energy that is present in the universe. Those who practice Reiki will then be able to take this universal energy and transfer it into an individual. By doing this, it will change the internal energy level and allow several different types of healing to work.

In order for Reiki to be effective, one is expected to practice several different things. If you are practicing Reiki on your own, there are specific steps to follow. These steps allow you to become in tune to the universal energy, as well as allow you to become focused and relaxed when transferring the energy. Usually, it is best to take a class to learn how to do this effectively. If it is not done properly, it can cause the opposite effect.

The first principle that is taught in Reiki is in relation to the secret of inviting happiness. This is used in order to give students a basic understanding of the different energy flows that they will be using in relation to the Reiki technique. By doing this, the students will be able to understand a level of healing that is taking place. They will also be able to understand a new idea of happiness in relation to ! using th e energy.

The second principle taught is that Reiki is a spiritual medicine for all illness. This idea is mostly taught in order to allow students to understand the basis of Reiki and where it's emphasis and importance lies. Because it is an alternative healing method, Reiki is able to emphasize the spiritual ties to the method.

For those that are practicing Reiki on their own and decide to take a class, there are several things that will happen. Reiki classes are divided into levels. The more conscious you become of the universal energy and your internal energy, the higher of a level you can move to. Once you become an expert in these methods you can become a teacher, master and healer of this healing method.

The next that is taken in Reiki is to identify the different sources of internal energy that need to be transferred. These will usually be transferred by your breath moving the energy out of your body. Those with illnesses will have parts in their body that have a noticeable different source of energy. You can find this energy through either your intuition, or for those beginning the practice, they can use a light touch to begin recognizing the energy.

Once you recognize the internal and external energy, you can then begin to move the energies out of your body, and new energies in. This is usually done using two methods. Your breathing practice will often times help with this. You can also use a light touch in order to transfer a different energy from the universe. Reiki masters and trainers will usually do the healing using a touch when they are using the method on someone else.

Reiki is known to be an effective method of healing and balancing by several for centuries. By the continuous practice of transferring energy, one will find that healing, balance, relaxation and a different level of focus will take place. Several can use Reiki if they feel that they need a change of energy in their physical, mental, emotional or spiritual lives.
