As the Independence Day holiday approaches and families enjoy time together in pools across the country, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) shares some sobering statistics on the number of drownings during previous July 4th holidays.

CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum reminds parents and caregivers to pool safely during upcoming pool parties and celebrations with family and friends.

"Along with fireworks, spending time in the pool is a traditional July 4th activity for many families," Chairman Tenenbaum said. "Child drownings are a preventable tragedy, so we encourage all families who are planning to spend time in pools and spas over the Independence Day holiday and all summer to adopt as many safety steps as possible. You never know which safety step will save a life—until it does."

According to analysis of media reports by USA Swimming, the national governing body for the sport of swimming, in 2011, there were 25 drowning incidents involving children younger than 15 reported over the week of the July 4 holiday (June 30 through July 6). In 2010, 24 drowning incidents were reported during that same week. CPSC reports that annually there are about 390 pool or spa-related drownings for children younger than 15. Another 5,200 children of that age go to hospital emergency rooms for near-drowning injuries. An unknown number of children are seriously brain-damaged.

CPSC's Pool Safely campaign (www.PoolSafely.gov) is a national public education effort to reduce child drownings, near-drownings and entrapments in swimming pools and spas. The campaign's message is that Simple Steps Save Lives. Simple water steps that could help families avoid a tragedy this holiday include:

Staying Close, Being Alert and Watching Children in and Around the Pool

  • Never leave a child unattended in a pool or spa and always watch your children closely around all bodies of water
  • Teach children basic water safety tips
  • Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings to avoid entrapments
  • Have a telephone close by when you or your family are using a pool or spa
  • If a child is missing, look for him or her in the pool or spa first
  • Share safety instructions with family, friends and neighbors

Learning and Practicing Water Safety Skills

  • Learn how to swim and teach your child how to swim
  • Learn to perform CPR on children and adults, and update those skills regularly
  • Understand the basics of life-saving so that you can assist in a pool emergency

Having the Appropriate Equipment for Your Pool or Spa

  • Install a four-foot or taller fence around the pool and spa and use self-closing and self-latching gates; ask your neighbors to do the same at their pools
  • Install and use a lockable safety cover on your spa
  • If your house serves as a fourth side of a fence around a pool, install and use a door or pool alarm
  • Maintain pool and spa covers in good working order
  • Ensure any pool and spa you use has drain covers that comply with federal standards, and ask your pool service provider if you do not know
  • Have lifesaving equipment such as life rings, floats or a reaching pole available and easily accessible

Meditation - Easy Tools for Success

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 12:00 PM PDT

Article by GiGi Konwin

Do you want to learn how to meditate? Have you tried to meditate but you keep falling asleep? Or you're not sure you are doing it right? Do you keep thinking about other things while you are trying to "clear your mind"? First you need to decide what type of meditation you want to do. There are basically two types of meditation - active and passive. Passive meditation is clearing the mind of all thoughts. You can then allow your "inner voice" or "minds eye" to speak to you. Passive meditation is good for reducing stress, increasing creativity, or just getting in some quiet time. Active meditation is when you keep your mind active by working on a particular problem in your life or focusing on accomplishing certain goals you have set. Using affirmations while meditating are particularly helpful in this area. There are many simple techniques to help you meditate. You may have read about them already. They include breathing techniques, repeating mantras, sitting up so you don't fall asleep and visualizing certain objects. These are all good techniques and will help you accomplish reaching that alpha brain wave level necessary for meditation. However, for a beginner, it can be frustrating, especially if you are not sure that you are reaching the alpha level. There are tools available that can help you. The easiest way to get started is with guided meditation cds. These recordings may have background music or binaural beats designed to help your brain get to the alpha level. Most of them will have a relaxation exercise. These are useful for passive meditation.More advanced techniques for active meditation will have subliminal messages and/or auditory affirmations depending upon what goals you would like to accomplish. Some are called self-hypnosis cds but they really are the same as guided meditations. These are helpful in keeping you on track during your meditation. It is very easy to lose your focus when you meditate and have your thoughts drift off to other areas. Concentrating on listening to the cds ! will hel p you maintain your focus.Where can you get these cds and how much do they cost? Believe it or not, some of them are free! More advanced cds with subliminal or auditory affirmations are usually less than . There are even guided meditations you can download from music sites. Some of the cds require a good set of headphones. Remember, meditation is all about relaxing and de-stressing. If you find yourself getting stressed out about relaxing, it may be helpful to use one of these meditation aids to get started. To find out more about these meditation tools, you can do a search on google or click here.

South Korea's Meditations monks tackle modern challenges

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 12:00 PM PDT

By Lucy Williamson, BBC, 27 June 2012
South Korea's Meditations monks tackle modern challenges

Seoul, South Korea -- Sitting in the study at Seoul's main Jogyesa Temple, the Venerable Sungjin wraps his wide grey tunic around him, as his round face cracks into a broad smile.

South Korean Meditations march with lanterns during the Lotus Lantern Festival in downtown Seoul, 19 May 2012 Meditation communities have been holding events to try to engage the public

Twenty years ago, he tells me, he was a student activist in South Korea's turbulent new democracy. Running from police one day after a demonstration, he took refuge in a temple, and began chatting to the Zen master there.

The rest, as they say, is history: Ven Sungjin is now head of administration at the Jogyesa Temple.

But the question of why people become monks is a pertinent one in South Korea at the moment.

Last month, the country's main Jogye Order was hit by scandal after video footage showed several of its monks drinking, smoking and gambling in a hotel bedroom.

It was a PR disaster for South Korea's ancient national religion, already struggling to remain relevant in the face of thriving Christianity and capitalism.

Allegations of un-Buddhist-like behaviour - gambling, corruption, even paying for sex - have circled the Joyge Order, fuelled by internal divisions over the organisation's leadership.

The man who leaked the recent video footage, Ven Seongho, told me the order was like "a patient with cancer - it's about to die, and we don't have the doctors who can fix it".

Many South Koreans dismiss that as hyperbole. But the recent scandal has raised new questions about the role Meditation monks p! lay in m odern-day Korea.

Interest declining

In an age of sex, smartphones and social freedoms, what motivates people to give up many of life's pleasures and spend their lives isolated from the world in quiet contemplation?

"There's usually a moment," the smiling, accidental Ven Sungjin told me. "A turning point, when someone decides to become a monk.

"It could be house burning down, the death of a loved one. A moment when they realise that nothing lasts forever. It's a very personal response."

But, he says, the number of people making that choice has declined.

"Compared to when I became a monk," he said, "there's been a reduction of maybe 50-70% in people coming in."

"I mean, look at this!" He holds up his bat-like sleeves.

"When life is so convenient, when there's so much to enjoy in modern life, why would you want to shave your head, wear clothes like this, and spend time with a 70-year-old Zen master in the mountains?"

Ven Sungjin spend ten years meditating in a temple in South Korea's mountains, before moving to Seoul.

"Few want to bear the great responsibility of being a monk," he says, "when even the smallest mistakes have huge consequences."

Korea's Meditation monks sign up for life - something that can create added pressures, says Ven Daejin, an American who's lived here as a monk for almost 30 years.

"People have a different attitude about Buddhism in Korea," he told me. "For example, in Thailand, you can go to be a monk for 3-6 months, and then return to society. But in Korea it's not that simple. Korean people believe you have to give your life to it. So when they see monks squabbling over petty things, they feel sad."

'Feisty'

As a result of the recent scandal, the leaders of the Jogye Order announced 100 days of repentance, and a series of reforms designed to bar monks from running the financial or day-to-day affairs of temples without help.

Bringing in financial advisors to do the ! accounts , they said, would not only prevent wrong-doing, but would confine the monks to their key tasks of meditation and spiritual practice.

But it's not the first time scandal has hit South Korea's main Meditation order. Just over a decade ago, TV pictures showed monks rioting in Seoul, over internal conflicts within the order itself.

I asked the American Ven
Daejin  whether Korean monks' reputation for being a bit hot-blooded was deserved.

"They are a bit feisty," he said. "And part of that reputation is that they're willing to fight for what they believe is truly good, and helps the Korean people. But of course if things like this recent scandal carry on, they'll lose that good image."

During earlier Japanese and Chinese invasions of Korea, the monks came out of their monasteries to fight the invaders. But with no military invasion to head off in 21st century South Korea, how does a closeted, meditative order remain relevant now?

"I think it's facing a challenge," says
Daejin , "because Buddhism is trying to satisfy a need for scientific learning. But trying to adjust the needs of Buddhism to the needs of this age is not so easy."

There have been attempts, he says, to combine Meditation teaching with counselling, and to hold street festivals and cultural events to engage the public.

But he says, at the same time "we as monks have to recognise that not everyone's ready to live like we do. And it's the monastic mind that's very interesting to a lot of people."

Ven Sungjin agrees. Buddhism was banned and repressed in Korea for centuries, and it still survived, he said.

"The decision to become a monk isn't something that can be blown off course too easily," he says. It's about wanting to fill the empty mind.

And for ! someone to be affected by the recent events? "I don't think they would have been willing to take that decision in the first place."

Sri Lanka Holidays to Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa

Article by Jude Limburn Turner

From verdant forests to idyllic beaches, and everything in between, Sri Lanka holidays offer the traveller a chance to discover one of the world's most naturally beautiful and historically rich destinations. With diversity in evidence, both in terms of terrain and cultures, lovers of adventure holidays and history buffs alike will find much to discover. The ancient capitals of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa are sure to provide adventure and discovery in abundance. Read on for an introduction to these fascinating cities.

Anuradhapura

This city rose to prominence in the third century BCE. As those travelling on Sri Lanka holidays will be aware, the country is one of Asia's most important Buddhist centres. The presence of important Buddhist symbols or relics in certain urban settlements has often represented power and the right to rule. The arrival of a cutting from the Bodhi Tree, the very tree under which the Buddha reached enlightenment - brought from India by the Buddhist nun Sanghamitta - ushered in Anuradhapura's golden age. It was a mighty capital by the standards of its day: a walled area of 663 square kilometres with a highly advanced irrigation system. The remains of its huge temples and palaces attest to its size and significance, though its influence has long since waned. It was left to ruin after being invaded in the 10th century, and was thereafter seen by few living eyes until the British colonists found it in the 19th century. Today it is renowned once more, as a pilgrimage site for Buddhists and an enduringly popular attraction for visitors on Sri Lanka holidays. Top attractions include the sacred Bodhi Tree, the Ruwanwelisaya stupa (decorated with 1,900 elephant figures), and the Archaeology Museum.

Polonnaruwa

Not long after the fall of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa was established as the capital by King Vijayabahu I. It remained the seat of power from the 11th to the 13th century CE. Whereas a significant factor in Anuradhapura's importance was its status as a sp! iritual hub thanks to the Bodhi tree, Polonnaruwa flourished in large part thanks to being located on one of the island's main trade and transport arteries - the road between Colombo and Batticaloa. Travellers who visit both ancient cities on their Sri Lanka holidays will notice differences between the two. The new capital's advancements had a lot to do with the trade connections, and its rulers were able to build on the technological and architectural innovations of Anuradhapura. Although many of these developments have been ravaged by time and the elements, there is still plenty to impress. The well-preserved Buddha statues, the imposing ruins of temples and palaces and the remains of the irrigation system all attest to Polonnaruwa's former glory - offering the visitor a glimpse into Sri Lanka's ancient past.

Parenthood May Protect Against Colds

We might think of children as "germ factories," but having kids may actually reduce an adult's risk of catching a cold, a new study says.

In the study, parents were half as likely as people without children to get sick after being exposed to a cold virus in a laboratory.

Surprisingly, the results could not be explained by the parents' pre-existing immunity to the cold viruses used in the study. In other words, while it could be easy to think that parents were less likely to get colds because their dear little ones had previously trucked these viruses home, the study didn't show this.

Instead, the researchers found that parents were less likely than people without children to get sick, regardless of whether they already had antibodies against a given virus.

The researchers aren't sure of the reason for the findings. It possible that, somehow, becoming a parent changes the regulation of the immune system so that the symptoms of a cold are actually less likely to appear, the researchers said.

Parenthood and health

In the new study, Rodlescia Sneed, of Carnegie Mellon University, and colleagues analyzed information from about 800 adults in the Pittsburgh area who participated in three studies conducted between 1993 and 2004. In those studies, healthy people were given nose drops containing one of three rhinoviruses (which cause colds), or a flu virus.

Participants were then quarantined and monitored for symptoms for five to six days.

In all, 337of the participants, or 42 percent, were parents.

About 30 percent of participants developed cold symptoms during the study. Parenthood was associated with a reduced chance of showing cold symptoms. For example, 25 percent of parents ages 24 to 36 became sick with a cold, compared with about 40 percent of non-parents in that age group.

Younger parents — those ages 18 to 23 — were the only parents who did not have a reduced risk of developing a cold, the researchers said. There may be psychological differences in people of this age that somehow translate to not reaping the same health benefits of parenthood, the researchers said.

Even having grown kids reduces risk

"The lack of difference here suggests that daily and intensive contact with one's children is not critical to the protective effect of parenthood," the researchers wrote.

Instead, physiological factors, such as a feeling regarding their purpose in life, or behavioral factors might be responsible for the link, the researchers said.

Because the study was conducted in a laboratory, it's not certain whether the results would apply to the real world, and so more research is needed to confirm them.

The study is published in the July issue of the journal Psychosomatic Medicine.

Pass it on: Parents may be less likely to develop cold symptoms after exposure to a cold virus.

Natural Disasters and Their Root Cause

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 10:00 AM PDT

Article by Sean M. Clarke

In recent times the world has witnessed climate change and natural disasters of gigantic proportions. This is just the beginning of a 10-15 year destructive phase which will increase in intensity. The root cause behind this weird weather patterns and destruction is primarily spiritual.

In a world that is increasingly connected, natural disasters have far reaching repercussions that are felt beyond the geographic boundaries of where the natural disasters hit.

Global warming is not the only major contributing factor to climate change. The Spiritual Science Research Foundation undertook spiritual research to ascertain the actual causes of climate change and the increasing intensity of natural disasters.

Cyclical changes

It is the law of nature that whatever has been created is sustained and eventually destroyed. This is the law of Creation, Sustenance and Dissolution and it contributes to 30% of the reason of natural disasters. For example, the Himalayan mountain ranges have been created, will be sustained and eventually will be destroyed. Thus, whenever something is created in this world, after a period of being sustained, it can be expected that at some point it will be destroyed. Only the Creator i.e. God remains steady and unchanging.

The time span of the Universe is divided into four eras. In the first era i.e. Satyayuga the subtle basic sattva (http://www.spiritualresearchfoundation.org/spiritualresearch/spiritualscience/sattva_raja_tama/) component was predominant. When there is a higher predominance of sattva in the environment, cyclical changes are gentle. As the eras progressed there was a reduction in the sattva component; thus resulting in cyclical changes with higher amplitude. In the present era of Kaliyuga where the predominant subtle basic component is raja the cyclical changes in creation, sustenance and destruction are quite dramatic. Destruction is generally brought about by increased natural disasters, disease and war. We are in the midst of a destruction! phase i n one of the mini cycles in Kaliyuga. Each mini cycle generally lasts for a 1000 years.

The effect of Man on Nature

Man affects Nature to the extent of 90%. This happens in following three ways.

At a physical level (30%): Excessive cutting of trees, oil leakages, emissions from factories, etc.At a psychological level (30%): Why do people indiscriminately add to the greenhouse effect and pollute the planet? The answer lies in the mind of Man. As Man gets more selfish and cares less about the planet and his fellow men, he indiscriminately abuses the resources of the Earth. Along with this, immoral behaviour and tensions in society, lead to a rise in the raja-tama subtle basic components. The collective psychological temperament of Man is closely related to the spiritual level at which Man affects Nature. At a spiritual level (40%): If one digs deeper into the psychological nature of Man one will find that it is heavily influenced by his spiritual maturity. A reduction in the collective spiritual consciousness of Man results in selfishness and unrighteousness. When there is a lack of spiritual practice that conforms to the five basic principles of spiritual practice there is a rise in the raja-tama in the environment also known as spiritual pollution. The response of Nature

Nature responds to the need for cleansing and correcting the subtle intangible pollution of raja-tama in the form of earthquakes, floods, eruption of volcanoes, cyclones etc. which are grossly visible; hence mankind is aware of their existence. However, the increase in raja-tama has far-reaching adverse impact on the body, mind and intellect of Man. This impact being subtle and intangible is not easily recognised and mankind becomes aware of it only when this impact manifests as very gross climatic changes. Unfortunately, at this point most of the changes are irreversible.Hence it is imperative that we understand the basic root cause of these disasters and take appropriate steps (by undertaking spiritual practice) to eradicate t! his spir itual pollution of raja-tama attributes. This way we would be truly working for the everlasting and all encompassing benefit of mankind.

On Diving Deeper Into the Mind of Terence McKenna Beyond the Screaming Abyss

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 10:00 AM PDT

It's All About LoveDuring the past few weeks I have immersed myself into the world of Terence McKenna — that legendary psychedelic bard beloved by many thinkers, rebels, and psychonauts from all walks of life. As of this writing, I have already watched and listened to more than a hundred videos and audios of his talks that are available on YouTube and the Psychedelic Salon podcast. I can now confidently say that I have caught up with most of McKenna's materials — his philosophy, psychedelic riffs, theories, dialogues, rants, social and political commentaries, and his idiosyncratic personality. In short, I can now talk with long-time McKenna followers and understand their lingo and cryptic references.

The next phase of my intellectual exploration into the Terence McKenna Wonderland is to dive deeper into what made him tick; what made him so articulate and intellectually compelling even if some of his narratives were way out there, beyond the leading edge of his time. Fortunately for me this exploration can be done easily through the Psychedelic Salon podcast hosted by Lorenzo. The Psychedelic Salon podcast is a treasure trove of Terence's talks, interviews, lectures, dialogues, and discussions of people who have been greatly influenced by McKenna's body of work. In the latest podcast Lorenzo published an audio of Bruce Damer's talk on "A Deep Dive Into the Mind of McKenna". In this podcast, Damer read excerpts from Dennis McKenna's (Terence's brother) upcoming book which tells the real story on why Terence stopped using mushrooms. Apparently, Terence had a horrying experience when the mushroom "turned on him" and he was plunged into a meaningless abyss. Terence was so terrified of the experience that he stopped using mushrooms altogether. Below is a quote from Dennis McKenna's upcoming book, The Brotherhood of the Screaming Abyss, wherein he told a story of Terence's mushroom trip back in the late '80s.

"Terence's pivotal existential crisis came abruptly sometime in '88 or '89. Everything that happened after that event was fallout. I don't know exactly when it happened. And I don't know exactly what happened. I am piecing it together from what Kat has told me and she has volunteered few details, and I'm reluctant to probe. It happened when they were living at the time on the big island and it was a mushroom trip they shared that was absolutely terrifying for Terence. It was terrifying because, for some reason, the mushroom turned on him. The gentle, wise, humorous mushroom spirit that he had come to know and trust as an ally and teacher ripped back the facade to reveal an abyss of utter existential despair. Terence kept saying, so Kat told me, that it is was, 'A lack of all meaning. A lack of all meaning.' And this induced panic in Terence. And probably, I speculate, a feeling that he was going mad. He couldn't deal with it. Kat's efforts to reassure him were fruitless. After that experience he never again took mushrooms, and he took other psychedelics such as DMT and ayahuasca only on rare occasions, and with great reluctance."

I find this very interesting and I believe that I have a conceptual understanding of what had happened to Terence.

In the Zen Buddhism Theravada tradition there are "Stages of the Path" — a map on "Progress of Insight" or a "Map to Enlightenment." Here is an easy-to-understand contemporary explanation of what that map is, courtesy of Aloha Dharma:

"What the map shows is that there are a series of predictable states and stages that constitute the "path." Like signposts on the way to enlightenment, the states and stages are signals that one is doing the technique correctly and making progress. These signposts are universal, automatic and impersonal. They happen to everyone who does the technique correctly and have nothing to do with personal growth or individual needs. Rather, they provide a way of seeing clearly into the nature of reality. There are 17 stages on the path to enlightenment, and I will describe each one in detail…" [read more here]

Based on the Zen Buddhism "Stages of Insight" I believe that McKenna was plunged into the "Extinction (aka The Dark Night)" phase with full awareness. His experience with the mushrooms had gone beyond the romantic phase and he was catapulted into the "Dark Night" phase. The result of which was a horrifying experience of the utter meaninglessness of it all. Note that the Dark Night phase is characterized by a series of stages: Dissolution, Fear, Misery, Disgust. In my opinion, McKenna's terrifying experience with the mushrooms fit the Dark Night phase perfectly.

Terence McKenna's approach to consciousness exploration through the use of psychedelics was radically "democratic." As much as I resonate with his egalitarian approach, I believe that the guidance of experienced inner explorers, or dharma teachers, are still indispensible. Even radical Psychonauts still need guides who know the inner "territory" and "stages" very well. Terence was a systems thinker and a wide reader. He was familiar with Western and Eastern philosophical and mystical traditions. However, I'm not sure how deep his understanding of Zen Buddhism practice was, or whether he had a dharma teacher who guided him in his inner explorations. I can only assume that Terence, radical and independent-minded as he was, did his explorations on his own with no guidance from an accomplished spiritual teacher. I believe that that was one of Terence's blind spots as a consciousness explorer.

Whether Terence McKenna had gone beyond the Dark Night phase or not is another area for speculation. Maybe Dennis McKenna's new book would shed some more light onto Terence's more private inner explorations. But judging from the stories I've heard about Terence's last days, I'm inclined to speculate that Terence was able to cross that screaming abyss as he breathed his last few breaths and uttered his now famous last words, "It's all about love."

Don’t be intimidated

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 07:00 AM PDT

On a blog at the Huffington Post, I used the example of Stephen Colbert's satirical "March to Keep Fear Alive" as a timely illustration of a larger point: humans evolved to be fearful – since that helped keep our ancestors alive – so we are very vulnerable to being frightened and even intimidated by threats, both real ones and "paper tigers." With his march, Colbert was obviously mocking those who play on fear, since we certainly don't need any new reminders to keep fear alive.

This vulnerability to feeling threatened has effects at many levels, ranging from individuals, couples, and families to schoolyards, organizations, and nations. Whether it's an individual who worries about the consequences of speaking up at work or in a close relationship, a family cowed by a scary parent, a business fixated on threats instead of opportunities, or a country that's routinely told it's under "Threat Level Orange" – it's the same human brain that reacts in all cases.

Therefore, understanding how your brain became so vigilant and wary, and so easily hijacked by alarm, is the first step toward gaining more control over that ancient circuitry. Then, by bringing mindful awareness to how your brain reacts to feeling threatened, you can stimulate and therefore build up the neural substrates of a mind that has more calm, wisdom, and sense of inner strength – a mind that sees real threats more clearly, acts more effectively in dealing with them, and is less rattled or distracted by exaggerated, manageable, or false alarms.

How?

The nervous system has been evolving for 600 million years, from ancient jellyfish to modern humans. Our ancestors had to make a critical decision many times a day: approach a reward or avoid a hazard – pursue a carrot or duck a stick.

Both are important. Imagine being a hominid in Africa a million years ago, living in a small band. To pass on your genes, you've got to find food, have sex, and cooperate with others to help the band's children (particularly yours) to have children of their own: these are big carrots in the Serengeti. Additionally, you've got to hide from predators, steer clear of Alpha males and females looking for trouble, and not let other hunter-gatherer bands kill you: these are significant sticks.

But here's the key difference between carrots and sticks. If you miss out on a carrot today, you'll probably have a chance at more carrots tomorrow. But if you fail to avoid a stick today – WHAP! – no more carrots forever. Compared to carrots, sticks usually have more urgency and impact.

Body and Brain Going Negative

Consequently, your body generally reacts more intensely to negative stimuli than to equally strong positive ones. For example, intense pain can be produced all over the body, but intense pleasure comes only (for most people) from stimulating a few specific regions.

In your brain, there are separate (though interacting) systems for negative and positive stimuli. At a larger scale, the left hemisphere is somewhat specialized for positive experiences while the right hemisphere is more focused on negative ones (this makes sense since the right hemisphere is specialized for gestalt, visual-spatial processing, so it's advantaged for tracking threats coming from the surrounding environment).

Negative stimuli produce more neural activity than do equally intense (e.g., loud, bright) positive ones. They are also perceived more easily and quickly. For example, people in studies can identify angry faces faster than happy ones; even if they are shown these images so quickly (just a tenth of a second or so) that they cannot have any conscious recognition of them, the ancient fight-or-flight limbic system of the brain will still get activated by the angry faces.

The alarm bell of your brain – the amygdala (you've got two of these little almond-shaped regions, one on either side of your head) – uses about two-thirds of its neurons to look for bad news: it's primed to go negative. Once it sounds the alarm, negative events and experiences get quickly stored in memory – in contrast to positive events and experiences, which usually need to be held in awareness for a dozen or more seconds to transfer from short-term memory buffers to long-term storage.

In effect, as I wrote on Huff Post, the brain is like Velcro for negative experiences but Teflon for positive ones. That's why researchers have found that animals, including humans, generally learn faster from pain (alas) than pleasure. (For more on the neuropsychology of the negativity bias, and references, see the slide sets on my website.)

That learning from your childhood and adulthood – both what you experienced yourself and saw others experiencing around you – is locked and loaded in your head today, ready for immediate activation, whether by a frown across a dinner table or by TV images of a car-bombing 10,000 miles away.

What to Do?

To keep our ancestors alive, Mother Nature evolved a brain that routinely tricked them into making three mistakes: overestimating threats, underestimating opportunities, and underestimating resources (for dealing with threats and fulfilling opportunities). This is a great way to pass on gene copies, but a lousy way to promote quality of life.

So for starters, be mindful of the degree to which your brain is wired to make you afraid, wired so that you walk around with an ongoing trickle of anxiety (a flood for some) to keep you on alert. And wired to zero in on any apparent bad news in a larger stream of information (e.g., fixing on a casual aside from a family member or co-worker), to tune out or de-emphasize reassuring good news, and to keep thinking about the one thing that was negative in a day in which a hundred small things happened, ninety-nine of which were neutral or positive. (And, to be sure, also be mindful of any tendency you might have toward rose-colored glasses or putting that ostrich head in the sand.)

Additionally, be mindful of the forces around you that beat the drum of alarm – whether it's a family member who threatens emotional punishment or political figures talking about inner or outer enemies. Consider for yourself whether their fears are valid – or whether they are exaggerated or empty, while downplaying or missing the larger context of opportunities and resources. Ask yourself what these forces could be getting out of beating that scary drum.

This mindfulness of both the inner workings of your brain and the outer mechanisms of fear-promotion can by itself make you less prone to needless fear.

Then you won't be so vulnerable to intimidation by apparent "tigers" that are in fact manageable, blown out of proportion, or made of paper-mache.

By way of implication

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Some readers of The Zennist blog are surprised at how much I rely on the Pali canon.  There is a simple explanation.  I discovered that the Pali canon often works through implication for want of a better term.  For example, anattâ (lit., not the self)  implies Mara the Evil One.  Why is this?  It is obvious from many discourses that the Five Aggregates are always anattâ.  But we also learn that these same Five Aggregates are always associated with Mara, the Buddhist devil.

"When there is form, Radha, there might be Mara, or the killer, or the one who is killed.  Therefore, Radha, see form as Mara, see it as the killer, see it as the one who is killed.  See it as a disease, as a tumor, as a dart, as misery, as really misery.  Those who see it thus see rightly.  When there if feeling ... When there is perception ... When there are volitional formations ... When there is consciousness, Radha, there might be Mara, or the killer, or the one who is killed" (S. iii. 189).

Logically, it is correct to say that anattâ implies Mara the Evil One. What is so interesting about this is when we look at those who loudly proclaim the Buddha taught anattâ or No-Self. Unbeknownst to them, they are saying the Buddha taught Mara the Evil One!

Among other things the Five Aggregates imply are impermanence and suffering.  Is it correct to infer from this that anattâ, the vaunted No-Self of the Theravadins, is impermanent and suffering?  Yes, it is quite reasonable to draw such a conclusion.

Next, what important terms are not associated or fungible with the Five Aggregates?  They are terms such as Tathagata, the attâ or self, the mind (citta) that is liberated, the unconditioned (asankhatam), and nirvana to name some.  Can we, at this point, say that the self or attâ, by logical inference, is the Tathagata, the liberated mind, the unconditioned, and nirvana?  Yes we can.

Ten Sikh Gurus -Their Unmatched Contribution To the World

Posted: 03 Jul 2012 04:00 AM PDT

Article by Jaspinder Grover

The Sikh Gurus have given the world a consciousness where in we can lead a life fulfilling our quest forspiritual upheaval. They have given us the principles on which Sikhism is based. What indeed is Sikhism ? It is a belief system emphasising on the equality of all humansas the children of God. Its strict condemnation of the stratification of society into various castes has been its most uniting factor considering that it was born in a country and period of history where the treatment meted out to a person, his rights, the amount of respect he deserved, the recognition of his person all depended on the caste that he wasborn in. Hinduism had severely injured the humanity with its intricate division of society into different castes lead by the high caste brahmins, who reserved the exclusive rights to read religious scriptures, which wereusually in sanskrit or some uncommon language beyond the understanding of lay man, and the rights to perform all religious ceremonies and rituals. The low castes were intentionally denied education of such languages to make them dependent on the brahmins for all their religious guidance. The brahmins were the caste that reserved exclusive rights toperform all religious rights and duties. The lower castes were given a stepmotherly treatmentby attaching to them labels such as 'outcastes' or 'untouchables'. The sytem was cleverly designed to serve theneeds of higher castes. In such circumstances the Sikh gurus came as a liberating force by teaching equality of all humans as children of God. Guru Nanak put a lot of thought to put an end to suffering of common people and end allreligious bigotry. He developed a new spiritual consciousness. Guru Nanak advocated the concept of one God, the Unmanifest Lord who is eternal, immanent and beyond the comprehension of ordinary human senses. He condemned idol worship. He never presented himself as God and always preached to follow and worship the one Supreme Benefactor of all. The Sikh scriptures were written in Gurmukhi so that the ! common m an could easily access them and did not depend on scholars to read them, beacuse these were meant for the common people at large. The Sikh Gurus revolutionised the existing society and their contribution is unmatched. People can still benefit from their messageby reading the Sih Scriptures like the Guru Granth Sahib Ji or the Holy banis of Nitnem, Sukhmani Sahib, The Sunder Gutka, The Bani Of Bhagats. The message they contain is for people of all castes, colours, religions, regions, communities and beliefs.Their message is of universal brotherhood, selfless service, love, unity and elevating your souls to a higher spiritual consciousness. Posted: 03 Jul 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Article by Raj Malhotra

Yoga has been at the heart of the Indian civilization for over thousands of year. The word 'Yoga' mean 'to yoke' or 'unite'. A practitioner who practices Yoga regularly merges his/her soul, his/her consciousness with the universal one. This gives the person, the power to look beyond the imperfections, to achieve a state of total happiness. Yoga, over the course of time, has branched out into many forms such as Kundalini Yoga, Hatha Yoga and Bikram Yoga and more. Each of these yoga forms aim to lead a practitioner to the same divine goal - connecting ones' spirit with the Cosmic consciousness.

Bikram Yoga is also known as Hot Yoga. Bikram yoga has received worldwide popularity owing to its immense weight loss benefits. Initially, Bikram Yoga branched out from Hatha Yoga and it was founded by Bikram Choudhury and has found millions of popular. Music gives an added effect to the Yoga session. Yoga clothes enable the body to breath and yet carry out the intricate poses. The intense sweat that is created in the body enables it to flush out the toxins.! The bod y must be hydrated throughout the session and also before and after it.

Pranayama is a major component in Bikram Yoga. Through it, one learns to control his/her breath and derive maximum benefits from the session. Meditation is also another major component. Meditation must be done before the Bikram Yoga session to prepare the body for it and also it should be done after the session gets over. The body needs to calm down after the strenuous workout and so does the mind. Listening to meditation music like Into Grace, A Hundred Blessings and Mantras from the Soul will definitely help. The albums have been created by world renowned artistes such as Snatman Kaur, WAH! Guru Amrit Kaur, Mirabai Ceiba and Guru Shabad Singh Khalsa and will invigorate your soul with new energy. The Process Of Guided Meditation

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 11:00 PM PDT

Article by Kelly Kauffman

There are many different methods of guided meditation. Since each person has a different goal when starting the meditation process, there are several ways to achieve these goals with diverse guided meditation programs. There are a few steps that the meditating person must go through in order to achieve a complete meditative state. Most of these steps in the process focus mainly on relaxation and the clearing of the mind. Since clearing the mind can be a difficult task to achieve, people who find interest in meditation turn to guided meditation to help them to center their minds and bodies. The guided meditation process can make meditating seem achievable and can help the user to feel more grounded and in touch with themselves rather than feeling lost while trying to quiet their mind.

There are many different ways to achieve a meditative state but most of these processes start by instructing the person to sit in a comfortable position. It is also very important that the person is in a quiet space with no distractions or sounds around that could divert the concentration that is needed. Guided meditation generally instructs the person who is meditating to quiet and stop the mind. This means that the person should release any thoughts from his or her mind and concentrate on nothingness. The meditating person should also make sure that his or her body is completely relaxed and there is no strain on any body part while sitting in the position.

The goal of a guided mediation session is to achieve a completely empty mind and a clear conscious. This moment of complete silence and peacefulness allows the person to experience what a feeling of whole calmness is throughout the body. This calm feeling usually makes the stress of everyday life melt away for many people. Once this feeling of calm has been experienced by a meditating person, he or she focuses on achieving this feeling throughout the day and not only during a meditation session.

Many guided meditation processes also include a man! tra. A m antra is the expression of a sound from the meditating body. This expression of sound can also aid in the calming of the body and mind at once. The most common mantra that is expressed in guided meditation is the "Om". By releasing this sound from the mouth, the person who is meditating finds it less complicated to eliminate excessive thoughts from the mind. Centering the mind and body in a quiet fashion is easily achieved with a mantra that is shown through a guided meditation session.

A meditative state should be achieved by the mediating person for about 15 minutes a day. However, everyone is different and many people will find that a more substantial amount of time is more beneficial for them. Through the use of guided mediation, many users have also found that the advice and process that is shown can be used throughout their day to relive stress and tension or to deal with difficult situations.

Religion and politics: where lies triumph over facts

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 11:00 PM PDT

Fascinating. Reading Leonards Pitts' column in today's Oregonian opinion page, it almost seemed as if he was talking about religion in "When lies triumph over facts, we're done."

All I had to do was mentally substitute a few words in key passages. Which I've done non-mentally below.

Not long ago, if you told a whopper like Palin's a holy book's and it was as thoroughly debunked as hers it's was, that would have ended the discussion. These days, it is barely even part of the discussion. These days, facts seem overmatched by falsehood, too slow to catch them, too weak to stop them.

Indeed, falsehoods are harder to kill than a Hollywood zombie. Run them through with fact, and still they shamble forward, fueled by echo chamber media preachers, ideological tribalism, cognitive dissonance, a certain imperviousness to shame, and an understanding that a lie repeated long enough, loudly enough, becomes, in the minds of those who need to believe it, truth.

...It seems that not only are facts no longer important, but they are not even the point.

Rather, the point is the construction and maintenance of an alternate narrative designed to enhance and exploit the receiver's fears, his or her sense of prerogatives, entitlement, propriety and morality under siege from outside forces.

...This is the state of American political religious discourse, particularly on the political fundamentalist right, where a sense of dislocation, disaffection and general been-done-wrongness has become sine qua non, coin of the realm, lingua franca of the true believers — and of their true belief in the desperate need to turn back the unrighteous Other and his unwelcome change.
...The result of which is that Americans increasingly occupy two realities, one based on the conviction that facts matter, the other on the notion that facts are only what you need them to be in a given moment. That ought to give all of us pause because it leads somewhere we should not want to go. When two realities divide one people, the outcome seems obvious.

They cannot remain one people.

There are some politics vs. religion discordancies in my edited version. Pitts is correct that lies in politics used to be much less acceptable than they are now. In the old days, if a politician was caught in a lie, this was a big deal.

It just elicits a shrug now. People don't expect policians to tell the truth, I guess.

In contrast, religions always have gotten away with falsehoods, in large part because there's no way to definitively say whether a claim like "God loves us" is true. All us skeptics can say is "evidence is lacking."

Still, Pitts has a good point when he writes "a lie repeated long enough, loudly enough, becomes, in the minds of those who need to believe it, truth." With religions, instead of "lie" it probably is better to use a word like "unfounded belief" (though sometimes lie is exactly what's being promulgated).

As I often say in my blog posts, I'm not bothered by people believing whatever they want to -- so long as they don't expect other people to accept those beliefs if they lack demonstrable evidence of their truthfulness.

Unfortunately, the same phenomenon Pitts notes among unfactual politicians is apparent among unfactual religious believers: they feel offended and disrespected when reasonable questions are raised by people unwilling to accept their bullshit.

"How do you know God exists?" "Even if God exists, how do you know God loves us?" "Isn't it more likely that God hates us, given how much pain, misery, and suffering exists in the world?"

Pitts seems to have a dream of people united by a shared vision of reality. Sounds great. But it's not going to happen anytime soon, especially in the realm of religion. It's tough enough to get people on the same truthful wavelength when it comes to scientifically demonstrable realities like human-caused global warming and evolution via natural selection.

Much more difficult is getting people to realize that cherished religious beliefs are just that: beliefs, with no factual substance behind them. Some day, perhaps. Someday. Religious people have their dreams, and so do I.

Such as, a world where humans know the difference between truths and falsehoods, reality and unreality, objective and subjective viewpoints.
