The kitchen, with its' melding of scents, great food and conversation, is often a favorite gathering place. Seems like there's something about the feeling of the room that coaxes folks to relax, unwind and open up. This past Memorial Day I was fortunate to spend a few precious hours with a long distance friend, while slicing a lemon meringue pie for the intimate group of friends relaxing in the garden. We bounced along topics, until we came to the question, "How does one stop oneself from feeling stressful concerns of inadequacy when in a competitive sports atmosphere?" In other words, there you are, excited to play a game, supported by your fellow teammates, with a long history of fun filled excellent sportsmanship achievements to your credit. Yet there is this facet to all humans that creates doubt and has the ability to sabotage the mind set. Since that short conversation, I've skimmed the edges of this topic in my mind, recalling past experiences which relate to the same core difficulty. For instance, I've enjoyed dancing for as long as I can remember, yet numerous times I've heard fellow lovers of dance express feelings of inadequacy when it comes to stepping out on the floor. In fact, during the most recent showing of the prime time program, 'Medium', a woman discussed taking tango lessons and when a man suggested she visit a dance club he was familiar with, she shyly responded, 'Oh, I don't think so...I'm not ready for that yet.' We have all experienced moments of self-doubt at some time in our life. We compare our physicality's, our strengths, our artistic abilities, our monetary situations, our valuables, our business prowess and even the condition of the grass in our front yards against those of another person. We cringe at the idea of being placed in a position where we might be weighed, measured and found wanting according to a standard set by someone else. In fact, many studies list public speaking as one of the greatest human fears, for it places an individual out in front, with all ! those kn owing, judging eyes quietly taking stock. Why is it that we are we not at peace and comfortable with whom we are? And why is it necessary to measure our achievements against an exterior value? Because the ego is consistent in its desire to be perceived as 'top dog', one might say that a positive feature to the act of comparing is its ability to push an individual beyond their current limits. It stimulates a drive for enhanced knowledge and accomplishment. Yet in truth, it makes little sense. Raised under diverse circumstances and because our lives are in a continuous state of building upon experiences, even our perception of similar experiences will vary. Now when an individual is participating as a team member, there is the understanding that each player brings a unique aspect to the group toward a united goal, which for any sport, is to win. Therefore, team members feel a pressure to be their best. Could there be an element of this pressure which actually relates to the individual's concern over whether the team members will find them a worthy colleague?

With these musings, I thought of all the self help books, how to books, and philosophical books which enable individuals to gain a greater handle on this wide spread topic, 'self love'. These books discuss the power of thought and positive affirmation. This subject is relevant for talk shows as well. One psychologist recommends standing naked in front of the mirror each day, and reaffirming to the mirrored image that they are beautiful, and worthy of love. Other suggestions include talking openly about the reasons you might suffer from bouts of low self esteem, delving into past experiences and adopting methods to forgive yourself and others. In sum, the general concept appears to be to shatter the less affirming programmed habits then rebuild an optimistic, encouraging viewpoint in its stead. While all of these concepts are excellent, is it possible a relevant aspect is missing?Thus far, suggestions such as mentioned above facilitate a ! heighten ed awareness for our conscious and even our subconscious thought process. In fact, to some degree, they highlight our thoughts, patterns, and triggers, as the core focus point for consideration, should we wish to create changes in our lives. So, if someone is upset because of an overweight concern, the idea is to find out what triggers their eating. If someone finds themselves feeling insecure in a social gathering, or while playing a sport, the idea is to determine what the trigger is that makes them feel less than assured, then reprogram that thought process to one that best serves their life in a positive manner. However, while we are formed of a physical, mental emotional body, we are likewise gifted with an ethereal body. This light body is the subtle essence - the quiet awareness which exist between the incessant ticker tape of thoughts playing through our minds daily. And while intangible, this component - the nucleus of YOU - is as real as faith, hope or love. Its role is to connect with others, manifest itself on this physical plane through your thoughts, and actions, and experience all this physical existence has to offer through eyes of compassion and non-judgment. Additional areas for consideration would be to keep in mind that time is priceless and fleeting. Lifetimes pass way too quickly - we exist within physical bodies which are not designed to exist forever. So, instead of focusing on and identifying our wholeness solely with our human body, emotions and thoughts, what if we step back and identify our existence from an illuminated vantage point? Maybe by keeping the larger picture out in front, we will experience a shift in awareness which will affect many areas of our life, to include the questions surrounding 'self-love'. For how can you entertain the idea of comparing yourself against another, when all beings are made up of an ethereal body rooted in compassion and non-judgment?

Wouldn't it be better if all desire for enhanced knowledge were kindled by a purely enthusiastic int! erest? A nd with an understanding that you are a living means to allow spirit to manifest on this plane, how can you not immerse yourself in each experience for its unparalleled moment which simply IS? Individuals are as unique as snowflakes and precious as gems. Know that you are made of stardust, sunshine, laughter and dreams. Dance with delight and pour your heart into a song. Play your favorite sport with exhilaration for the pleasure it brings. Gaze into the mirror and appreciate the miraculous, multifaceted wonder that is you. It's more than a mantra or prosaic saying - it's your life. Live it with clear awareness that it IS a gift. You may find your fears will magically erode in the shadows from lack of attention when you fully engage in spotlighting your joy.

The others in the room will assume you are listening to music, and the recording will diminish the volume of all the distracting sounds in the room.

You can also take a walk while meditating. Just clip that MP3 player to your belt or drop it into your shirt pocket as I do, and put in the ear-buds. I like to walk the woods or along a beach while listening to a brainwave entrainment recording. You might try it on city streets as well. In fact, the small size and almost meaningless weight of MP3 players has opened up many interesting ways to practice meditation using brainwave technologies.

It should be known that when you notice the first symptom of anxiety, which is usually a confusion of the mind, irritation, sweating, racing heart beat, confused behavior, etc, the first thing to be aware of is that you have triggered something that lies within you in the form of fear. The moment this gets triggered the body reacts to the situation (even if it is safe) as a threat and then begins anxiety and the anxious thoughts. With awareness that you have triggered an underlying fear in some way, the first thing to do should be to relax. You will be able to relax only if you understand that there is nothing actually threatening but it is an unresolved thing that you have somehow triggered. Lord Krishna is known as Adhokshaja, one who cannot be approached through the material senses. But when the senses are employed in His transcendental loving service, the inapproachable Lord manifests Himself before the devotee. Bhakti or devotional service means to render service for the pleasure of the Supreme Lord. When a devotee renders such service, the Lord becomes pleased and thus reveals Himself.The person who renders service or seva is called sevaka and the beneficiary is called sevya. The principle behind rendering any service is to please the sevya. The first class devotional service is defined by Srila Rupa Gosvami as: anyabhilashita-sunyam jnana-karmady-anavritam / anukulyena krishnanu-silanam bhaktir uttama"One should render transcendental loving service to the Supreme Lord Krishna favorably and without desire for material profit or gain through fruitive activities or philosophical speculation. That is called pure devotional service."The significant point here is 'anukulyena krishnanu-silanam: transcendental loving service to the Supreme Lord Krishna favorably' because the service is considered as devotional when it is rendered favorably to Lord Krishna. A favorable service has two essential elements: welfare of the served and authorization for the service. Without these two the service doesn't even stand good as a service.Kamsa, the maternal uncle of Lord Krishna, was constantly thinking of Krishna. Day and night, while eating, walking, sleeping, etc., he meditated upon Krishna but with a motive of killing Him. Even though constantly remembering Krishna is one of the nine bona fide processes of devotional service and it's a state that is achieved by the yogis after great sadhana, yet Kamsa's remembrance is not considered devotional service because it was against well being of Krishna. Despite investing so much of energy and consciousness in Krishna, Kamsa missed out the most desired goal of human life; pleasing Krishna and establishing loving relationship with Him because his action ! was agai nst the welfare of the Lord. However, Lord Krishna, being an ocean of compassion, awarded impersonal liberation to him. Thus, consideration of welfare of the sevya forms an essential element of devotional service.The consideration of welfare alone is not enough. There is another indispensable aspect: authorization. The authorization for a service comes from the sevya or the beneficiary. Srila Prabhupada who-is-srilaprabhupada elucidates this matter thus, "Don't manufacture your ways of pleasing God. Suppose I want to please you. Then I shall ask you, "How can I serve you?" Not that I manufacture some service. That is not pleasing. Suppose I were to ask a disciple, "My dear student, please give me a glass of water." It is then his duty to give me a glass of water. If he thinks, "Prabhupada wants a glass of water, but why not give him something better? Why not a glass of hot milk?" that is not service. In his consideration, hot milk is very palatable and is better than water, yet because I have asked for water, he has to give me water, not milk. That is favorable service. If you want to please me, then you should ask me, "How can I please you?" And if you do what I order, that will please me." One's only desire should be to serve Krishna favorably, as He desires. If Krishna wants something, then we should do it. In order to know what Krishna wants, one has to hear from Him. In conditioned state one cannot directly approach Krishna but when one develops an intimate relationship with Krishna then he can serve Him favorably. Thus, one must take information of what Krishna wants through the transparent medium of the spiritual master. Acting under the guidance of the spiritual master makes the devotional service bona fide and thus, acceptable to Lord Krishna.Taking the example of Ashvatthama from Mahabharata one can easily understand the risk of unauthorized service. "When the respective warriors of both camps, namely the Kauravas and the Pandavas, were killed on the Battlefield of Kurukshetra and the dead warr! iors obt ained their deserved destinations, and when the son of Dhritarashtra fell down lamenting, his spine broken, being beaten by the club of Bhimasena, the son of Dronacharya [Ashvatthama] beheaded the five sleeping sons of Draupadi and delivered them as a prize to his master, foolishly thinking that he would be pleased. Duryodhana, however, disapproved of the heinous act, and he was not pleased in the least." It is further described in Mahabharata that Duryodhana lay lamenting in pain as there was no one to carry on the family line of the Kurus as all his own brothers were dead. Mourning over this loss, he breathed his last. Seeing his master die in grief rather than in joy, Ashvatthama too became repentant.By his over-smart actions, Ashvatthama neither pleased his master nor himself. Likewise, an unauthorized service may give temporary sense pleasure of having performed it, but the essential matter of pleasing Krishna and establishing a loving relationship with Him will be lost. Trying to serve Krishna out of our own whims and fantasies is like repeating the mistake of Ashvatthama, which not only brought about remorse to him but also great displeasure to his master. Without knowing from the Lord if we serve the Lord, then neither will we be pleased nor the Lord.Without this authorization, the service not only loses its credit of being anukulya or favorable but also becomes a cause of disturbance as stated by Srila Rupa Gosvami:sruti-smrti-puranadi-pancaratra-vidhim vinaaikantiki harer bhaktir utpatayaiva kalpate"Devotional service of the Lord that ignores the authorized Vedic literatures like the Upanishads, Puranas and Narada Pancharatra is simply an unnecessary disturbance in society."A living entity being marginal in nature must dwell either in Krishna or in Maya. There is no other option for him. A Krishna conscious action is called devotional service and a Maya conscious action is called sense gratification. In other words a living entity is either engaged in devotional service or in sense gratificatio! n. In or der to be engaged in devotional service the principle of anukulyena krishna anusilanam must be followed. If this principle is missed out then the actions are understood to be inspired by Maya and it is called sense gratification or the actions directed towards one's pleasure rather than the pleasure of Lord Krishna. Devotional service is not an object of sentiment. Rather, it is systematic procedure to transform the independent self centered living entity into a humble loving servitor of the Supreme Lord. The fundamental point in devotional service is to direct the living entity to give up independence and align his thoughts and actions with the desires of Lord Krishna. The scriptures, which are the voice of the Supreme Lord, enjoin the means and processes of pleasing Him. One has to learn from the scriptures the desire of the Lord and for that one must take shelter of bona fide spiritual master. Therefore Lord Krishna advices in the Bhagavad-gita that one should surrender to a bona fide spiritual master, inquire from him and render service unto him, so that one can be guided by the spiritual master in rendering favorable devotional service to Lord Krishna. When one serves Lord Krishna in this way, he not only attracts the attention of the Lord but also gets entry into His eternal abode:"One can understand the Supreme Personality as He is, only by devotional service. Free will either is, or isn't. Compatibilism makes no sense.

I don't believe in free will. I've got good neuroscientific company, which includes Sam Harris, author of "Free Will." (See here and here for my previous blogging about the book.)

Reading a New York Times review of "Free Will," I was reminded of how the have-it-both-ways notion of compatibilism doesn't make sense to me. Compatibilism claims that free will and determinism are compatible.

Huh? is my reaction. Harris' also, according to the review.

For quite a while now, philosophers and public intellectuals, including Harris's friend Dennett, have tried to rescue something like the common notion of free will from the jaws of science and logic by embracing a position called compatibilism. Compatibilists believe that "a person is free as long as he is free from any outer or inner compulsions," Harris writes, and they "have produced a vast literature in an effort" to salvage free will. "More than in any other area of academic philosophy, the result resembles theology," he continues, consigning it to what one assumes is, for him, the intellectual subbasement.

For some reason unrelated to my non-existent free will, I've never even been able to understand how compatibilists justify their position, much less agree with it.

I started to make my way through a lengthy philosophical examination of the subject, but couldn't handle the intellectual exertion of reading it all.

After all, it's summertime, and thinking is easy (when I do any of it). It just seems to me that if determinism rules the brain, and there's essential zero scientific evidence to the contrary, then the only way to save a belief in free will is to redefine the term.

This is what compatibilists do. They accept brain-based determinism, but somehow argue that if I can act on my fully determined motives without interference (mostly from other people, I assume), I'm free. 

However, if I'm not free to choose what to do, what kind of freedom is that? To me, and Harris, free will is being able to do something different, even though the status of every neuron in the doer's brain is exactly the same as before.

This, of course, requires that a mysterious "will" be something supernatural, since if "will" is an altered brain state, determinism still rules: my will is the result of some cause, which itself is the result of some other cause, and so on -- all the way back to the big bang.

Since there is no evidence of a non-material entity (soul, spirit, whatever) which acts upon the physical brain, genuine free will appears to be an impossibility. 

Here's an excerpt from the above-linked Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy article on compatibilism. Makes good sense. Of course, what else could I say? I don't believe in free will, so naturally I agreed with this:

Despite the classical compatibilists' ingenuity, their analysis of could have done otherwise failed decisively. The classical compatibilists wanted to show their incompatibilist interlocutors that when one asserted that a freely willing agent had alternatives available to her—that is, when it was asserted that she could have done otherwise—that assertion could be analyzed as a conditional statement, a statement that is perspicuously compatible with determinism.

But as it turned out, the analysis was refuted when it was shown that the conditional statements sometimes yielded the improper result that a person was able to do otherwise even though it was clear that at the time the person acted, she had no such alternative and therefore was not able to do otherwise in the pertinent sense (Chisholm, 1964, in Watson, ed., 1982, pp.26–7; or van Inwagen, 1983, pp.114–9). Here is such an example:

Suppose that Danielle is psychologically incapable of wanting to touch a blond haired dog. Imagine that, on her sixteenth birthday, unaware of her condition, her father brings her two puppies to choose between, one being a blond haired Lab, the other a black haired Lab. He tells Danielle just to pick up whichever of the two she pleases and that he will return the other puppy to the pet store. Danielle happily, and unencumbered, does what she wants and picks up the black Lab.

When Danielle picked up the black Lab, was she able to pick up the blond Lab? It seems not. Picking up the blond Lab was an alternative that was not available to her. In this respect, she could not have done otherwise. Given her psychological condition, she cannot even form a want to touch a blond Lab, hence she could not pick one up. But notice that, if she wanted to pick up the blond Lab, then she would have done so.

Of course, if she wanted to pick up the blond Lab, then she would not suffer from the very psychological disorder that causes her to be unable to pick up blond haired doggies. The classical compatibilist analysis of 'could have done otherwise' fails. According to the analysis, when Danielle picked up the black Lab, she was able to pick up the blonde Lab, even though, due to her psychological condition, she was not able to do so in the relevant respect. Hence, the analysis yields the wrong result.

The classical compatibilist attempt to answer the incompatibilist objection failed. Even if an unencumbered agent does what she wants, if she is determined, at least as the incompatibilist maintains, she could not have done otherwise. Since, as the objection goes, freedom of will requires freedom involving alternative possibilities, classical compatibilist freedom falls.

Meditation is not a technique, but a way of life. Meditation means "a cessation of the thought process". It describes a state of consciousness, when the mind is free of scattered thoughts and various patterns. The observer (one who is doing meditation) realizes that all the activity of the mind is reduced to one.In the West, the word meditation means a concentrated state of mind in serious reflection. The Latin root of the word meditation, mederi, means "to heal." It is an effort to heal afflictions of the mind, the hurt ego, by trying to understand the cause of the problem and finding a way to solve it, that is, by knowing what counter-measures to take. To meditate thus, is to deepen a state of understanding. In the East, however, meditation does not mean thinking at all but fixing the mind in a spiritual ideal, to be one with it, or the thought-process dissolving in the consciousness of it. According to Zen, meditation does not involve any concept but is an awareness of inner silence. As per the Yoga of Patanjali, meditation is a combination of three steps: pratyahara or abstraction, or withdrawal of the mind from the sense-objects or attention to their memory; dharana or concentration; and dhyana or contemplation which, however, is not a thought-process but an absorption of the feeling of oneness with the ideal. In Bhakti Yoga, meditation is visualization of the image of a chosen deity, together with mental repetition of a relevant mantra. For the Vedantin it is to contemplate on the meaning of selected verses from the Upanishads or similar scriptures. Whatever you do with awareness is meditation. "Watching your breath" is meditation; listening to the birds is meditation. But, What Exactly Is Meditation?

Meditation is all about the mind game. It helps you to focus and clear your mind. But it takes a little time and effort to get the hang of meditation, this is because our minds are so cluttered with so many things these days. With some practice and patience, you will be able to get into the habit of meditating. Once you are able to make it part of your habit, you will be able to reap the many health benefits from it.

Perhaps the next question to ask is, how to do meditation?

To get started, find a quiet place where you can be comfortable. You can sit in a cross-legged position, but this isn't mandatory. You may find another sitting position that is more comfortable for you, but the key is to maintain a good posture. Do not slouch, because if you do, you will get tired easily and feel like falling asleep.

Here are some techniques to help you focus and clear your mind:

Focus on your breath. Start to breathe in and out slowly, and for each breath you take, focus on the air that is going through your nose. Try not to think anything that is related to your works, just focus on empty your mind and clear your though! ts.

< p>As mentioned, this will take some practice. Thoughts are inevitable and they will come through your mind. When thoughts appear, focus on your breathing intensely. With some effort, you will be able to get thing going smoothly.

Another technique is to keep on telling yourself and your mind to focus on the present moment. Do not think of the past or the future, think of the present moment; your present state of mind.

When you are able to make meditation part of your habit, you will have a more focused mind. This can certainly help you to do your job or business better as your mind is now clear and is able to focus on the tasks at the present moment without worrying about your past or future.

Effective Stress Buster

Meditation is really an effective stress buster. You see, stress is caused by worrying about the past or the future. One of the best quotes I have ever come across about stress is from a very successful self development guru "Eckhart Tolle", here is what he says: "Stress is caused by being 'here' but wanting to be 'there."

Get it? Let me repeat... "Stress is caused by being 'here' but wanting to be 'there."

That is why meditation is so effective in managing your stress because it helps you to achieve calmness in your soul and mind. It helps you to focus on the present time instead of the past or future.

The absence of stress will improve your health in many ways. You'll likely enjoy lower blood pressure and a strengthened immune system. Stress can also lead to mental disorders, so when you strive to be stress-free, you will keep anxiety and depression away as well.

But of course, there is no such thing as a stress-free life these days. Stress is always present in out life, the important thing is how we manage the stress. In fact, a small amount of stress is necessary to motivate us to do better in life.

Different Teaching Styles Of Yoga

Yoga is very much about life style. There are those yogis who like fast-moving yoga and there are those who like the traditional slow and deliberate movements, then there are those who are in between. My view is that it is not about what style of yoga you do, but more about what it does for you and what you become over time.

Yoga, for me, is all about my health and learning to help my mind to become quieter. My preference is Hatha yoga in style of Iyengar. I love the precision and building strength.

As a business, to become a yoga instructor is one of the finest opportunities. It is understood that, in any community, only between half and 3 percent of the population ever practice yoga. This ancient art of self-healing is just not on everyone's radar. So the opportunity is the vast market of the rest of the population that knows, understands, and are also aware that Yoga is something that will give them good health and a quiet mind.When you begin, through yoga practice, to direct your energy into positive channels within the body, it feels like you are opening doors. A person who follows the traditions of yoga is known as a yogi.

Our yoga teacher training courses aims to provide a framework for our students with which they can open and run their own Yoga classes. We provide yoga teacher courses for people who wish to make Yoga philospophy part of their life and also wish to take up Yoga teaching as a career.

In the main there are two types of yoga. Raja Yoga and Hatha Yoga. From these two roots of the yoga tree, several variations have come about and appropriate names have been allocated. Usually you will find that it is the person who devised the style claims the name. Don't get attached to the names…try out whatever the style and either walk away, if you are not comfortable, or stay and learn the benefits.I often tell my students in my classes to observe. They must observe how they feel after a class. I encourage you to sit in your car, having done a yoga session, and ! take a f ew breaths and listen to the body. If you find that you feel better then what you came in to the class, then the type of yoga suits you. If however you do not feel better, then don't give up on yoga, change your teacher !

So some of the names and types of Hatha and Raja yoga:

Karma yoga concentrates on giving of yourself to others without desiring any reward.Jnana yoga is a metaphysical method of opening up to impressions of the world.Bhakti yoga emphasizes bringing emotional vitality into one's spiritual practice.The raja method focuses on meditation. Raja yoga also encompasses the Hatha style of yoga, the physical technique that most people use as a type of exercise.The Kundalini style of yoga works on the idea that the human body contains eight chakras. Through controlled breathing, you can warm the body from the bottom to the top, in order to raise your latent Kundalini power which should help you attain a level of enlightenment.Power yoga is also recognized by its Sanskrit name, Vinyasa. A vinyasa is a series of swift movements intended to warm your body all over. Vinyasa yoga is a particularly active type of yoga, in which you move rapidly through your poses or asanas. Due to the speed at which you move, you do not hold these poses as long as you would in other methods. It is almost definitely guaranteed that you will produce a lot of sweat during your sessions; therefore this style is not for the inexperienced or for those who are out of shape. The benefit of this style is that it gives your body and especially your muscles a vigorous workout.

My personal preference is to work with yoga that suits me. I need strong postures but not the speed of movement from one posture to the other. Iyengar style of yoga suits me very well. I also need to have a few moments of meditation and breathing. Finally I also appreciate a few moments of complete relaxation. This allows me to connect with my body and observe.
