Does God want me to be a senior citizen skateboarder?

There's got to be a deep meaning behind my strangely strong desire to become a skateboarder, longboarding style, at the age of 63. 

After all, don't the world's Western religions tell us that God/Allah is in control of our lives? And don't the world's Eastern religions tell us that Karma/Tao guides our decisions? 

Thus I have to assume that if I follow through on my lust for longboarding, I will have taken another step toward my salvation, enlightenment, god-realization, satori, and overall Major Dude'ness.

Now, so far I haven't actually set foot on a skateboard. I don't think I've even ever touched one. But the Big Dude Upstairs works in mysterious ways, the most mysterious being that the Big Dude Upstairs doesn't exist.

I simply feel like longboarding is the next step in my spiritual, philosophical, and mystical evolution. Which surprises me, since I have no idea what that path looks like, or if it leads anywhere.

As noted in this post, I emailed the dudes at Salem's Exit Real World skateboard/snowboard shop (great name), asking if I was crazy to be considering jumping into skateboarding at my social-security-eligible age.

In 2009, methadone was involved in 31.4 percent of the nearly 3,300 U.S. deaths involving opioid painkillers, the report said. The drug accounts for this portion of painkiller-related deaths despite making up just 2 percent of all pain reliever prescriptions.

The rate of overdose deaths from methadone has been on the rise, increasing by more than 5 times between 1999 and 2009. This increase in fatal overdoses has occurred along with an increase in methadone prescriptions for pain, the CDC said. The majority of deaths are unintentional.

The drug has been used since the 1960s to treat heroine addiction, but became increasingly prescribed as a painkiller in the 1990s, the CDC said.

To help curb overdose deaths, doctors should be selective about when they prescribe methadone for pain, and the drug should not be the first-choice treatment for non-cancer pain, the report said. There's evidence that doctors are prescribing the drug inappropriately, for conditions that have not been shown to benefit from methadone treatment, such as back pain and headaches, the report said. Most doctors who prescribe it do not have special training in pain management, the CDC said.

"There's really been an overuse of methadone for pain," Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the CDC, said today (July 3) at a news conference about the report. There are many safe alternatives to the drug, Frieden said.

Methadone is a long-acting pain drug that is available at a relatively low cost, compared with other prescription pain medications. However, the drug carries extra risks because it can build up in the body and disrupt a person's heart rhythm, the CDC said.

The difference between prescription doses and dangerous doses of the drug is small, the agency said.

For their report, CDC researchers analyzed national rates of fatal methadone overdoses between 1999 and 2010, and also data on all opioid-related deaths in 2009 available from 13 states.

More effective use of prescription drug-monitoring programs, which are databases that allow doctors to record and track patients' prescriptions, will also be an important element in addressing the nation's prescription drug abuse problem, the CDC said.

The report was published today (July 3) in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Why Debilitating MRSA Infections Are on the Decline

Infections with the bacteria methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) have declined in recent years, according to a new study.

The bacteria are perhaps best known for spreading among hospital patients, but people have also contracted infections from elsewhere in their communities; the data show that the rates of both types of infections dropped between 2005 and 2010.

In 2005, community-onset MRSA infections affected 1.7 per 100,000 people, on average, but by 2010, the number had fallen to 1.2 infections per 100,000 people. Hospital-onset infections dropped from 0.7 infections per 100,000 people to 0.4 infections per 100,000 people between 2005 and 2010.

The findings are based on data collected by the Department of Defense on more than 9 million active and nonactive military personnel.

The decreases mean that MRSA infections "still represent a large burden of disease, but at least there are some encouraging results," said study author Dr. Clinton Murray, chief of the Infectious Disease Service at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.

Murray said that he found the decrease in the rate of community-onset infections surprising. Prior to 2005, the rate had been rapidly increasing.

A deadly infection

About 19,000 people die yearly from MRSA infections, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). About one in five of those who develop invasive MRSA infections, which take hold in the blood and spread throughout the body, die from the bacteria. People with open wounds, particularly those in hospitals, as well as people with weakened immune systems, are more likely to die from MRSA.

Community-onset MRSA infections often spread through locker rooms or other close-contact situations.

The study's results are promising, and confirm a previous report by the CDC suggesting similar decreasing trends, said Dr. Michael David, who researches MRSA at the University of Chicago and was not involved in the study.

While the exact reasons for the decreases are unknown, researchers think that improved hospital practices, such as better cleaning practices and increasing attention to the importance of sterile treatments for open wounds, have played a role, David said.

The research also showed that the percentage of MRSA infections that developed outside of hospitals may have peaked in 2006, at 62 percent of infections, before decreasing to 52 percent in 2010.

David said that while these numbers are a positive sign, rates of community-onset infections are still much higher than in previous decades.

"If a doctor left the States in 1999, and came back in 2010, [he or she] would be shocked," David said.  Community-onset MRSA went from "never causing infection, to being the No. 1 cause," he said, and scientists are still trying to understand exactly why this happened.

More common in men

The researchers searched the health records of the 9 million military personnel, of which 82 percent were nonactive, and 52 percent were male.

Over the six years, the records showed 80,281 MRSA infections of the skin or soft tissue, and 2,643 cases of infections in the blood. The infection was more common in men and people over age 65.

The data used in the study did not include people's risk factors for developing MRSA infections, which is unfortunate, David said, because tracking such factors may have yielded clues as to which improvements in health care practices are having the biggest impact.

While the study was large, it was limited in that the people included represent a subset of the general population, and because all participants had certain levels of income and access to health care.

Additionally, the researchers noted they used data collected only by military hospitals; people with military insurance can choose to see private physicians, so some cases of MRSA may have not been accounted for. While this should not affect the decrease found in the study, it may mean that actual incidence of MRSA is higher than was found here, the researchers said.

Pass it on: Infections caused by MRSA are declining inside the hospital and out — but the reasons for the decrease are still unclear.

The mind is made to wander - just take a few minutes to sit quietly and watch the mind flit around like a butterfly going from flower to flower. With all that thinking, worrying, justifying, wondering, story telling, imagining, assuming, compulsive activity - it is a wonder we actually get anything done in a mindful way. But there is help! There is a way to stop your mind from wandering.

Meditation and mindfulness are two buzz words that nearly everyone is familiar with. In a world where multitasking is considered a positive trait necessary for working, it is fascinating that there is so much interest in meditation and mindfulness - which are the opposites of multitasking.

We think that when we work on more than one task at a time, we will save time and get more done. That may occur, but it is more likely that we will get more done, more accurately and creatively, when we concentrate on just one thing at a time, with mindful attention and one-pointed energy.

More times than I would like to admit, I have rushed through projects only to find many mistakes and problems necessitating the project to be looked at again and corrected. When I take my time and focus my mind on one project at a time, I am much happier with the results. This happens at work and at home. When I am multitasking - baking blueberry muffins, sorting the mail and ironing a shirt to wear the next day - the blueberry muffins often end up on the shall-we-say crispy side. When I focus on just making the muffins, just sorting the mail and just ironing the shirt, each action becomes a meditation, my mind stops wandering and I am in the flow of attending to what is waiting for my undivided attention.

Have you ever been at a restaurant with a friend who is looking around the room as you are talking to him or her? That situation is a visual representation of a wandering mind. The person is distracted from what you are saying because he or she is not focused - his or her mind is wandering - "hmmm I wonder who just ca! me throu gh the door" or "I wonder if my boss realizes I've been at lunch for an hour and a half".

The next time you find yourself and your mind multitasking, appreciate that awareness, take a few deep breaths and focus on one thing at a time - write one email at a time, mindfully drink your cup of tea, drive to work without a cup of coffee in hand - and you will have found the way to stop your mind from wandering - and have perfectly baked blueberry muffins.

Toddler’s Marijuana-Cookie Ingestion Could Have Been Worse

The case of the 3-year-old boy who ate his grandmother's prescription marijuana-laced cookies could have had a much worse ending than a very long nap had the child consumed a drug other than cannabis, a drug expert says.

The California boy was taken to the hospital after he slept for 16 hours and his family noticed crumbs from the grandmother's cookies, according to an Associated Press story. He was observed at the hospital and released.

Cannabis is "one of the least toxic drugs that exists," said Dr. Stephen Ross, a professor of child psychiatry and addiction at New York University's Tish Hospital. Death from ingesting it would be unlikely even for a small child, he said.

But Ross said a child having access to any sort of drug, including marijuana, is certainly concerning, and the outcome could have been much worse if the child had ingested a drug such as an amphetamine, an opiate or alcohol.

Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported that deaths among children due to accidental poisoning  — which includes drug overdoses as well as cases of ingesting cleaning products — nearly doubled over the past decade. There were 824 reported deaths in 2009, compared with 442 in 2000.

The increase was largely due to an increase in prescription drug overdoses in teens, the CDC said.

Because children's brains are still developing, they are generally more sensitive to drugs in general, Ross said. In particular, drugs that are potentially addicting need to be kept out of children's reach, he said.

"I'm concerned about drugs that have addictive liability, that are used medicinally, that are not locked up," Ross said.

Marijuana is not addicting, but the growing trend among states of decriminalizing marijuana means that people should be reminded to be just as careful with this drug as with others. "Unless it's properly secured like other medicines, this will happen," Ross said.

While the exact effects of marijuana on children are unclear because no such medical experiments can be performed ethically, its main effects on children would likely be sedation or confusion. In adults, consuming large amounts of marijuana has been linked with psychosis, Ross noted.

He said no death has even been attributed directly to consuming marijuana. Deaths associated with the drug are the result of activities undertaken while on the drug, such as driving under the influence. 

Still, parents who suspect their child has consumed the drug should immediately take the child to an emergency room, Ross said, and the child should be observed for the duration of the drug's influence.

"Certainly, a child who had ingested it should be medically monitored to make sure they wouldn't do anything that would be dangerous," Ross said. "If a child becomes uncoordinated or their speech becomes slurry or they develop bloodshot eyes — those would be the overt signs that I'd be looking out for."

Cookout Goers Beware: Grill-Cleaning Brushes Cause Injuries

Before you throw that burger on the grill this July 4 holiday, you might want to check the grill surface for some not-so-edible objects.

In recent years, there have been several documented cases of people who ended up in the emergency room after ingesting wires that detached from grill-cleaning brushes, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The report describes six such cases that occurred between March 2011 and June 2012. The patients, all treated at the same Rhode Island hospital, ranged in age from 31 to 64, and their injuries included a puncture of the soft tissues of the neck, which caused severe pain on swallowing, and perforation of the gastrointestinal tract, which required emergency abdominal surgery. All six patients fully recovered after treatment

"With the summer grilling season under way, broad awareness of the risk will help" in quickly and correctly diagnosing this injury, the CDC said. Diagnosis can be difficult because the bristles from grill-cleaning brushes are small, and can be quite difficult to see on imaging scans.

"Additionally, public awareness might result in careful examination of any grill surface before use, or use of alternative grill-cleaning methods or products," the CDC said.

Details about the types and brands of grill-cleaning brushes that afflicted the patients in the report were not available, so the CDC said it cannot make recommendations regarding which brands might be safer to use. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is currently reviewing information on the topic to see if product defects can be identified in grill-cleaning brushes that could pose an unreasonable risk for injury, the CDC said.

The new report, published today in the CDC's journal Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, was authored by researchers at Rhode Island Hospital. It is the second such report to come from that hospital system — the first described six cases that occurred between July 2009 and November 2010.

Together, the reports suggest that "such incidents might be more common than previously suspected," the CDC said.

Alchi Monastery is a beautiful temple situated in the village with same name that lies on the banks of the Indus River. This temple is around 70 km away from Leh on the main Leh-Srinagar Highway. It is also known as Alchi Gompa, and is approximately 1,000 years old. This temple is an ideal study centre of Buddhism and is managed by the monks of Likir. The village is largely populated by Hindus and Buddhists, and both offer prayers at this temple. Nubra Valley is about 150 km north of Leh, the capital town of Ladakh. Local scholars say that its original name was Ldumra (the valley of flowers). The Shyok River meets the Nubra or Siachan River to form a large valley that separates the Ladakh and the Karakoram Ranges. The average altitude of the valley is about 10,000 ft. above the sea level. The common way to access this valley is to travel over the Khardung La from Leh. Non-locals require an Inner Line Permit (obtainable in Leh town) to enter Nubra.

Pangong Lake

Pangong Tso is an endorheic lake in the Himalayas situated at a height of about 4,350 m (14,270 ft). It is 134 km long and extends from India to Tibet. 60% of the length of the lake lies in China. The lake is 5 km (3.1 mi) wide at its broadest point. During winter the lake freezes completely, despite being saline water. The lake is in the process of being identified under the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international importance. This will be the first trans-boundary wetland in South Asia under the convention.
