What should the Dalai Lama do about Tibetan self-immolations?

On CNN, we see two dramatically different views on the Dalai Lama's position on the wave of self-immolations by Tibetans protesting the Chinese occupation of their country and the persecution of their religion and culture.

Stephen Prothero, a Boston University religion scholar, author of "The American Bible: How Our Words Unite, Divide, and Define a Nation," and regular CNN Belief Blog contributor, calls on the Dalai Lama to condemn the protesters.

Tenzin Dorjee, executive director of Students for a Free Tibet, responds, saying that Prothero's post is a "crass display of moral blindsight" that "blames the victim."

Dorjee praises the courage of the self-immolators and compares them to past non-violent protestors:

How can the Dalai Lama condemn the self-immolators when their motivation was evidently selfless and their tactic nonviolent? Would we ask Gandhi to condemn activists in the Indian freedom struggle who were killed while lying on the road to block British police trucks? Or the hunger strikers who were starving themselves to death in order to protest the injustices of British rule in India?

He also rightly calls into question some of the odd rhetoric that Prothero employs.

They sacrifice their own lives not in the name of "God" or "Buddha," as Mr. Prothero so dismissively suggests, but in an altruistic intention of alerting the world to their people's suffering.

From all of Mr. Prothero's accusations, the most offensive is his comparison of self-immolations to sati – a social system in ancient India where widows were pressured to throw themselves into the funeral pyre of their deceased husbands. Self-immolation – a political act of reason – is the polar opposite of sati – a blind act of superstition.

I'm broadly with Dorjee, and think that as well as distorting what's going on in Tibet and China, Prothero overlooks the complexities of the Dalai Lama criticizing those who protest against China. There are two prominent problems that spring to mind. First, if the Dalai Lama says "stop the protests," the Chinese are able to say he's responsible for them. Second, the Chinese can then say to Tibetans that their own leader has turned against them.

The Dalai Lama walks, as he has acknowledged, a fine line. He can't approve of violent acts, even if they are violent only to the perpetrator but he also can't walk into the trap of outright condemning the protests. He is also sensitive to the feelings of the protestors' families:

If I say something negative, then the family members of those people feel very sad. They sacrificed their … life. It is not easy. So I do not want to create some kind of impression that this is wrong.

He certainly hasn't encouraged the protestors, but in a BBC interview he in fact questioned their wisdom and the effectiveness of their actions:

In an interview with our correspondent, he said he was not encouraging his followers to sacrifice themselves – as alleged by China.

"The question is how much effect" the self-immolations have, the Dalai Lama said.

"That's the question. There is courage – very strong courage. But how much effect?

"Courage alone is no substitute. You must utilise your wisdom."

My own view is that the Dalai Lama displays far more wisdom here than Stephen Prothero, who asks, rather absurdly, "Where are the protests against these Tibetan protesters?"

If we're going to protest against anything, let it be against the oppression and torture that has driven the Tibetan people to such desperate acts of protest.

The percentage of people in the U.S. who say that obesity is an extremely serious problem for society is now higher than the percentage saying the same thing about cigarette-smoking, according to a new Gallup poll.

Results from a nationally representative poll show that 81 percent of people say that obesity is an "extremely" or "very serious" problem, up from 69 percent who said the same in 2005, which was the last time Gallup asked the question, according to the organization.

That means more people believe obesity now outranks cigarette-smoking as a health problem. Nearly four in 10 Americans now say obesity is an "extremely serious" problem to society, while 30 percent say the same about cigarettes, and 18 percent about alcohol.

Only 3 percent said obesity is not a serious problem, while 6 percent said the same about cigarettes.

However, when asked whether they agreed that it is "extremely or very important to have federal government programs to address obesity," people's answers broke down along political party lines. While 82 percent of people who identified themselves as Democrats said they agreed with this statement, 55 percent of Independents and 27 percent of Republicans said they agreed.

The growing concern regarding obesity is likely due the fact the obesity rate has risen, as well as Americans' increasing awareness of the problems it is causing society, according to a statement posted today (July 18) on the Gallup website. In 2010, 35.7 percent of U.S. adults were obese, up from 32.7 percent in 2005, according to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The poll's results were based on telephone interviews conducted this month with a random sample of 1,014 adults living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. The poll has a margin of error of 4 percentage points. Meditate on that purity, on that divinity, and you will be permeated by that which you meditate on with Love.

Make an effort, and you will find the treasure. You carry your Higher Self with you wherever you go, so it is very easy to meditate on that. Wherever you are, meditate. Freedom and liberation lie in meditation. It is the only place where you can master your mind and actually meet yourself.

Long-Acting Birth Control Becomes More Popular

Women in the U.S. are increasingly using long-acting methods of birth control, such as intrauterine devices (IUDs), while the use of short-term contraception, such as birth control pills, as well as sterilization procedures have slightly decreased, according to a new study.

The percentage of U.S. women using birth control who reported using a long-acting method rose from 2.4 percent in 2002 to 3.7 percent in 2007 and to 8.5 percent in 2009. Over this same time, the percentages of women who reported using either permanent or short-term methods of birth control decreased.

"The average age at first sex is around 17, and the average age at first birth close to 25. As a result, the period during which women are at risk for unplanned pregnancy is much longer than it used to be," said study author Dr. Lawrence Finer, of the Guttmacher Institute.

This means that protecting against pregnancy for a longer time, without requiring a woman's frequent attention, could greatly benefit women — especially young women, who have the highest rates of unintended pregnancy, Finer said.

The researchers used data gathered during the National Survey of Family Growth, which includes U.S. women ages 15 to 44. Women completed the surveys in their homes, and all information was self-reported. The researchers surveyed 4,600 women in 2002, 3,400 in 2007 and 3,900 women in 2009.

Women between ages 25 and 39 and women who already had one or more children were more likely to use long-acting contraception, the results showed. This supports the idea that most people consider long-acting contraception to be a method that should be used after child-bearing.

Long-acting contraception also has higher up-front costs than other methods, which may deter younger women, according to the researchers. IUDs can cost up to $ 500, according to Planned Parenthood.

However, although women younger than 25 were less likely to use long-acting methods than other groups, there was still an increase in use among women of this age, from 1 percent of all women ages 15 to 19 in 2007, to 4 percent in 2009.

Despite the rise in use of long-acting methods, the most common form of birth control used by women over age 35 was sterilization, and among women under age 35, other methods such as the pill remained more common.

The study was published Monday (July 16) in Fertility and Sterility.

Pass it on: Long-reversible contraception methods, such as IUDs, are on the rise, though sterilization and other means, such as birth control pills, are the most commonly used.

Dads' Jobs Linked to Birth Defect Risks

Certain jobs held by men in the months before they conceive a child may increase the risk of birth defects, a new study suggests.

Researchers analyzed information from more than 14,000 fathers whose jobs fit into at least one of 63 categories.

The study found certain jobs were linked with an increased risk of multiple types of birth defects in children. These jobs included: mathematicians, physicists, computer scientists; artists; photographers and photo processors; food service workers; landscapers and groundskeepers; hairdressers and makeup artists; office and administration support workers; sawmill operatives; those working with oil and gas; those working in chemical industries; printers; those operating cranes and diggers; and drivers.

The researchers did not have information about chemicals or agents the men may have been exposed to at their jobs that could increase the risk of birth defects in their children, and so could not determine whether the jobs were indeed the cause of the defects.

However, the researchers pointed out  that occupations in which workers are commonly exposed to solvents — such as artists, chemical workers, pharmacists, chemical engineers, painters, dry cleaners, printers and plumbers — were associated with an increased risk of eye, heart and intestinal defects, and oral clefts.

The findings mean that these jobs that should be investigated further for their potential to cause birth defects, the researchers said. The results can also help researchers figure out what types of chemicals commonly used in certain jobs might increase the risk of birth defects, they said.

Among children born in the U.S., birth defects occur in about 1 in 33 babies, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Andrew Olshan, of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and colleagues obtained the job histories of just under 10,000 U.S. dads who had a child with one or more birth defects born between 1997 and 2004, and job histories of just over 4,000 dads whose kids did not have birth defects. The jobs included in the study were those held by the father for at least the three months before conception and the first month of pregnancy.

The researchers classified the jobs into 63 groups, based on their assumed exposure to chemicals or other potential hazards.

The researchers examined the link between these jobs and more than 60 birth defects.

Nearly a third of job types were not associated with any increased risk of birth defects. These included architects and designers; health-care professionals; dentists; firefighters; fishermen; car assembly workers; entertainers; smelters and foundry workers; stonemasons and glass blowers; train drivers; soldiers; and commercial divers.

Jobs associated with specific types of defect included artists (associated with defects of the mouth, eyes and ears, gut, limbs, and heart), photographers and photo processors (associated with cataracts, glaucoma and absence of or insufficient eye tissue); and landscapers and groundskeepers (associated with gut abnormalities).

The study is published today (July 17) in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
