Most of us live stressful lives, overloading ourselves with work in order to maintain a competitive edge. But this stress is the gateway to mental and emotional ailments, which in turn create real and physical health problems. There are, however, ways to cope without turning to drugs or medication. More than ever before, meditation is a great option when considering stress relief techniques, in order to help maintain a healthy and happy life.

Traditional meditation focuses on objects, like a candle, or your breath. Your mind and body relaxes and you experience inner peace. The more you are focused the better the results. Meditation develops your concentration levels. Many people believe meditation is not right for them. However, anyone can easily learn meditation and if practiced regularly it will help you know yourself better. Here are some meditation techniques that are easy to follow yet work effectively.

The most basic form of meditation is to close your eyes and count your breaths. You simply breathe in and breathe out whilst paying attention to the sensation of your breath coming in. You feel the air coming in and going out of your nostrils. This helps you concentrate. As you follow this simple technique, you will notice that your focus on counting your breaths is increasing and your contact with the outside world is reducing. Keep your eyes closed during this process and remain focused.

Another common technique is the use of a mantra. In traditional Hindu culture, the word 'Om' is considered magical, with healing powers. The skill lies in chanting it from the bottom of your heart. It can be any mantra - all you have to do is to chant it again and again so that your mind focuses on it. When you chant anything repeatedly whilst sitting in a quiet room with your eyes closed, you will notice your contact with the outside world is reduced.

Over the years, meditation is one of the stress relief techniques that has undergone many transformations. Now, using advanced yet sim! ple tech niques, meditation becomes easy to do. One of these is the initiation technique. After a Divine Energy initiation, from a competent master, you can achieve a deep meditation state instantly. To reach such a deep state of meditation used to require months of intense training, but today can be achieved very quickly, using modern training techniques.

Thinking positive thoughts during meditation can have a positive affect on your body. This is known as 'self healing meditation' and requires deep meditation. Through this, positive energy is produced in our body that accelerates the healing process. These days, this form of meditation is commonly suggested by hospitals.

If you are deciding which of the many stress relief techniques is right for you, meditation should be seriously considered. During meditation, you should be in a calm and quiet place. This will help you focus. The mat or carpet you are practicing on should be comfortable, otherwise you can become easily distracted. Early morning is the best time to meditate as the mind is fresh. Drinking a glass or two of water before meditating is a good idea, however eating too much is not. Keep yourself light and your mind relaxed. With your stomach neither empty nor full, you will concentrate better.

The Tiniest Patients: Fetal Surgery Delivers Big Results

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 10:00 AM PDT

The tiny hand of a fetus emerges during a fetal surgery.
CREDIT: The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

On Nov. 7, 2006, Mary Kelly went for a routine pregnancy ultrasound. Three days later, she and her unborn daughter had become pioneers.

Kelly and her daughter, Addison, now 5 years old, were the second mother and child to undergo a fetal surgery procedure where doctors removed a tumor between the heart and lungs that was causing heart failure and fetal hydrops — a condition where Addison was taking on so much fluid that she would not likely survive.

Over those three days, Kelly underwent tests and met with doctors to discuss her options. With her pregnancy only 26 weeks along, those options included monitoring the pregnancy and waiting, or inducing labor — and in both of those cases, the baby would likely die.

Kelly and her husband opted for a third choice, fetal surgery, which gave their daughter a 50 percent chance of surviving. The surgeons planned to place the fetus back in Kelly's uterus, to allow her to develop for 10 more weeks before delivery, Kelly said.

"But that's not how it went," Kelly said.

While the surgery was successful, a few days later, Mary Kelly went into preterm labor. Addison Hope Kelly was born almost three months premature.

Although Addison faced a multitude of challenges in her young life, and did not even come home from the hospital until she was almost a year old, she will begin kindergarten this fall.

"You look at her, and you would not know she went through any of this," Mary Kelly told MyHealthNewsDaily. Addison needs ongoing observation and requires a machine to ensure she keeps breathing at night, but she has "nothing terrible, which is truly amazing," Kelly said.

Addison's survival and the challenges she has faced represent both the promise of fetal surgery, and the ways it has to go.

The tiniest patients

The first ever open-fetal surgery was performed in 1981, at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), to correct an obstructed bladder.

Today, about 150 fetal surgeries are performed yearly at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), where Kelly was treated and which has the largest volume of these surgeries in the nation, said Dr. Scott Adzick, the surgeon-in-chief.

Adzick was among the researchers who contributed to the development of fetal surgery in the 1980s, [JB1] Since then, fetal surgeons have removed tumors, repaired holes in the diaphragm affecting lung development and treated conditions that threaten twin pregnancies.

"The most successful surgeries have had to do with treatment of twins that share blood through a common placenta in an uneven fashion," said Dr. Ruben Quintero, director of the Fetal Therapy Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Florida.

Quintero performs only minimally invasive, endoscopic surgeries, and has developed techniques for the procedures, which involve making a quarter-inch incision while a woman is typically under local anesthesia. These procedures reduce the risks of open procedures, which are more likely to bring infections, and the side effects of general anesthesia, which can include nausea, vomiting and not waking up.

Because of these risks, there is a limit to when fetal surgery should be done.

"The surgeries that are done in utero are justified only when the life of the fetus is at risk if surgery is not undertaken, or where severe damage to the fetus can occur if surgery is not undertaken," Quintero said.

He noted, however, that it can also be justified for conditions that carry serious or long-term health consequences, such as the surgeries some centers perform to treat spina bifida, a condition where the spine is left partly exposed.

"Although [spina bifida] typically is not a lethal condition, it may result in significant complications and surgeries after birth," he said.

Last year Adzick, along with colleagues at UCSF and Vanderbilt University, published a study that compared repairing myelomeningocele — the most severe form of spina bifida — while the babies were in the womb, to the traditional approach of repairing after birth.

While the results showed that mothers and children faced risks from the surgery, the trial was halted early because it overwhelmingly showed that fetal surgery produced better outcomes than repair after birth.

The future of fetal surgery

Efforts under way in fetal surgery involve using less invasive or earlier treatments. One hope is that procedures done today for fetuses who are twentysome weeks old could be done sooner, with greater benefit.

Dr. Alan Flake, director of CHOP's Center for Fetal Research, is working with stem cells from adult bone marrow to develop a treatment for the blood disorder sickle-cell anemia that could be administered 12 to 14 weeks into pregnancy. Clinical trials of the therapy should begin in a year or two.

In the longer term, Adzick said, researchers are looking at treating other single-gene disorders that can be diagnosed early in pregnancy.

Finally, Adzick said more work is being done for spina bifida. A tissue-engineering technique could be used to protect the spinal cord opening, essentially working as a "band-aid" early on in pregnancy, with repair being done after birth.

But that research needs more rigorous lab testing before being applied to patients.

While fetal surgery has had some dramatic successes, it is not without risks, which can include infection from the surgery, preterm birth or death for the mother or fetus.

That's why part of all lines of fetal surgery research include asking, "Can that be done with tissue engineering, can that be done in some other way that's not a fetal surgery?" said Lori Howell, executive director of CHOP's Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment.

When fetal surgeries began, Howell said, other physicians were skeptical that opening up a pregnant woman to operate on the baby was necessary.

With the improvements coming in the field, the hope is that someday, many of the operations needed today won't be.

Pass it on: Doctors are looking to use fetal surgery to treat an increasing number of conditions, but the surgery remains risky.

Exercises for Anxiety - Strengthen All Four Quadrants for Optimal Relief

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 09:00 AM PDT

Article by Lorna Atkinson

Most of the general anxiety that millions of us suffer from is the result of making poor choices: poor choices in what we choose to focus on, what we give our attention to, who and what we issue our power to and poor choices about our own identity. These poor choices lead us into a mindset of being a victim; too weak, helpless and vulnerable to be effective in making changes for the better. Our power oozes out of us with these habitual, draining choices and assumptions; and as our power flows out of us and into those areas we've given dominion over our thoughts and feelings, our anxiety, worry and stress builds and grows.

While regular physical exercise is an excellent way to alleviate the symptoms of panic attacks, and provides short-term relief from stress and general anxiety, it doesn't address the underlying causes of anxiety. For true effectiveness and permanent remedy, exercises for anxiety relief should also cover the emotional, mental and spiritual realms as well as the physical. A small, consistent devotion to all four quadrants will reclaim authority of the power that we've allowed to leak away - and from this position, we can exercise mastery of the results we get by consciously determining not only what thoughts, feelings and behaviors we'll allow ourselves to entertain, but also what meaning we give the daily events of our lives.

Aside from a regular workout regime, to strengthen your command over patterns of habitual worry, concentrate on fortifying all four quadrants with the following exercises for anxiety:

1. Physical grounding exercises: When thoughts and unhappy feelings start to run away with our lives, the material world around us can start to take on a surreal atmosphere which compounds the anxiety. Any activity that requires absorption of the physical senses plus mental attention will help to physically ground your awareness in the body and distract the mind from its object of anxiety. This allows us to calm down, stay present and acknowledge that we are s! afe in t his moment. Some easy grounding practices are:

- stomping your feet on the ground while focusing on the sensations;- deep squats while paying attention to the muscles in your legs, back, feet, buttocks etc.- focus on your breath or count your breath; inhale to a count of 6, hold for 2 beats then exhale through your mouth to a count of 4 and repeat twenty times.- progressive muscle contraction and relaxation; starting with your toes and ascending up the body to the top of the head, alternate contracting and relaxing each muscle group.- put your face in a sink of cold water and sign "Tiny Bubbles" - the louder, the better.- hug and snuggle with something soft and cuddly while repeating a "safe" mantra. "I'm safe right now" or "Right now, I'm okay and safe" work well - make it easy and simple to keep your attention.- walking meditations with your focus fully on the feet; if your mind wanders just keep bringing it back to your feet and their sensations.

The effectiveness of grounding exercises is the ability to change our mindset, so anything that engages our senses and changes our focus can be a tool for the anxiety busting toolkit. If you can add some humor to it, all the better. One of my favorites, because I always end up laughing, is to sing the "Name Song", vigorously, on whatever has gotten to me. i.e. "Money, money, foe funny, fananarama foe funny, fee fie foe fum. MONEY!" It's silly I know, but it's effective because it's so silly and it breaks my mind out of the heaviness of worry - tailor your own grounding exercises to suit your environment and lifestyle.

2. The second quadrant to exercise for anxiety is the emotional world. This area is a little trickier than the physical, but necessary for freedom from anxiety. A good place to start is to learn what triggers your anxiety and worry; get curious about yourself and dig a little deeper to reveal which situations, events, conditions and behaviors push your buttons. What "kind" of people do you dislike? When do you feel "put upon" ! or taken advantage of? Can you keep your word to yourself? If not, why not? What are the feelings that come up in these conditions and are they consistent? You won't know what to change until you face up to your fears - but when you do, you'll know what needs to be done and how to be effective in implementing the change. It may seem a bit frightening at the start, but with persistence you'll start having successes which will build confidence and momentum. In a surprisingly short time you'll learn to recognize the feelings of your triggers, discern whether they're true in the moment and dissolve them by choosing to put your attention on what you desire - you'll realize you are sovereign of your emotions, not vice versa.

Our feelings are a result of what we think, and we think what we think because of what we believe and the meanings we've given to the daily unfolding of our lives. However, most of these feelings, thoughts and beliefs were formed as small children when they may have been appropriate to keep us safe and secure. Living from these same beliefs and meanings as adults rarely results in a joyous expression of consciousness - usually, they hamper us with restrictions and limitations so it's crucial to understand who's driving your bus. Is it you, or the 5 year old version of you? If it's still the 5 year old, it may be time to consider changing drivers...

Journaling is a very effective method to begin the process of getting to know yourself and your feelings; set aside a specific time, preferably at the end of the day, to non-judgmentally assess your day and begin the process of asking yourself better questions. What made you happy, unhappy or stressed out today? How can you do more of what makes you feel good and less of what causes anxiety and unhappiness? What empowered you today and what drained you? Do you feel that outside events, people have authority over you? Is it true? What meaning have you given this and can you find a better one that will strengthen rather than weaken you? By ask! ing bett er questions you'll receive better answers, learn how to trust your intuition and make stronger decisions about who and what controls your feelings. With this power, you can then cultivate the feelings of joy, abundance, health etc.

3. The mental quadrant is another one where major work needs to be done. We are inundated with distractions all day, every day and have become mentally lazy and complacent about what we allow to roam around in our heads. Developing mastery of your thoughts will require mental discipline and consistent daily practice, but the rewards will be well worth the effort. This is the realm of power that's inherent in choices and decisions and determines the direction of our lives as well as the results we experience.

A good place to start in developing a strong psychology is to know what it is you want. Get very, very clear about the outcomes you want; know what your goals are and your plan to bring them to fruition and set a deadline with specific points to measure your progress. If you don't know what you want, your mind will default to focusing on all of the old influences of family, school, advertising etc. and you'll keep getting the same old results. Nothing changes if nothing changes - this is an essential point to understand because it contains the dynamics of power that decision making contains. You are responsible for your life as it is now and when you can accept that responsibility, you can accept the responsibility of correcting course and directing it as you desire.

As well as the questioning and journaling outlined above, mental exercises should also include simple mantras or affirmations - always stated in the positive, keep your affirmations simple and easy to use. Determine 3 or 4 areas to improve and stick with those until you've met your goal. Don't allow negative thoughts and worry to occupy any space in your mind; they're like weeds and grow uncontrollably - weed them out of your mind and sow healthy, confident thoughts. Develop the practice of ! visualiz ing the experiences, situations and feelings you want; 15 minutes a day of focusing on what you want, not on what you dread, will make a significant difference in anxiety levels and your behavior as well as the effects you experience.

4. The last quadrant is spiritual. One of the most dis-empowering assumptions we have is that we're alone, weak and vulnerable. Develop a relationship with a Higher Power and take some heat off of your shoulders, learn to let go and let God; calm yourself with the practices of prayer and meditation and develop the spiritual muscles of faith. Try assuming that the Source of the universe is benevolent, and everything that happens is for your benefit - by looking for the good, you'll be given the results to witness to your faith. Support is all around you - it may not be in family or close friends, but it's there in forums, support groups, step groups, religious institutions, government agencies, help-lines etc. Reach out and help someone else, it truly is the best way to help yourself.

When considering exercises for anxiety relief, don't just rely on physical exercises for temporary relief with a burst of feel good hormones; developing and strengthening the four quadrants of physical grounding, emotional maturity, mental toughness and spiritual trust will bring about not only short term solutions to anxiety but also permanently dissolve many of the fears that create anxiety in the first place.

KUNDALINI: Awake your INNER FORCE 11.11.11 12.21.12

IAMYOU Kundalini is a condensed, primal force, similar to the potential energy found in water. When released, it creates a vertical connection between the chakras by opening the subtle channels known as nadi, most specifically, the central channel that moves up the spine called sushumna. the intense energy of Kundalini undulates in the body as it rises through the chakras. Kundalini can also be seen as a result of the chakras connecting to each other. Theoretically, as the chakras enlarge, the spinning of one can enchance the spinning of the one above or below it. Kundalini is basically a healing force. ---------- Take hold of the breath. This time we take a strong hold and use it in ways that arouse the life force and draw it up through the chakras of this wonderful bio-spiritual instrument in which we abide. Now begin with a deep inhalation filling the lungs and feeling strength! Then exhalation through the mouth. This should be felt throughout the torso of the body -- STRENGTH! This time feel the opening of your centers. keep your focus on the third eye and crown chakra, letting the other centers open toward these two. Direct your attention to each chakra as you recite the phrase and key word. Why Should People Do Yoga?

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 08:00 AM PDT

Article by Katie Adams

This question is the most asked by persons who decide to take few yoga classes. The best of the possible answers is that yoga combines practices and techniques that give the equilibrium between the body and the spiritual side of the whole being. The mixture of postures, meditation and breathing exercises give the whole being the feeling of full health. The benefits get after following yoga classes are various and amazing. From the beginning, when you start doing yoga exercises you should know what these exercises can do for the body. Health conditions and disorders like different kinds of pain, depression, blood pressure, and heart diseases are treated through the yoga practices. Furthermore, yoga also improves other health conditions and dysfunctions. Among them, we can enumerate:

The improvement of muscle tone, the flexibility and strength of the entire body.Stress and tension are reduced to the minimal level. The boosting of self-esteem a person has for his entire being.Creativity and concentration get improved with every yoga class a person attends. The upsetting fat gets to the lowest levels.Circulation, especially blood circulation improves and regulates. The immune system is stimulated and works better against diseases.Gives the sensation of calmness and well-being.

Today, we think about yoga as a way of healing the body from the health conditions it has to face with. In the past, the purpose yoga had on peopleâEUR(TM)s lives was different. And because India is the starting point of this practice, the main purpose was a religious one. The yogis were searching for a direct experience at the spiritual level. Yoga is the term used for the union between the divine consciousness and the transcendent Self. True happiness, enlightenment and liberation are the results from this union. Of course, it is not compulsory to take yoga classes just for this reason.

Many of those who do not know the history and religious importance of yoga actually practice yoga for the simple reason that it help! s them t o reach the level of complete relaxation. The stressful element of life prevents people from feeling calm and peaceful. A yoga session is what people need to recharge their batteries. The yogic system comes to remind us what to do in order to help us recharge our body with energy and wellness. The total balance helps each of us reintegrate in the universe and live in peace and equilibrium with the Self.

Why people should do yoga is simple: to regain the equilibrium we once had.

"People get into a heavy-duty sin and guilt trip, feeling that if things are going wrong, that means that they did something bad and they are being punished. That's not the idea at all. The idea of karma is that you continually get the teachings that you need to open your heart. To the degree that you didn't understand in the past how to stop protecting your soft spot, how to stop armoring your heart, you're given this gift of teachings in the form of your life, to give you everything you need to open further."

Article by Andrew Horton

Strive to hold the highest consciousness possible and aspire to surround yourself with the RIGHT people. People that reflect the qualities you want to see in your own life. This will help you keep your focus and energy on the business of utilising your excellence and exposing your brilliance.

When viewed from a spiritual perspective, people are in essence a reflection of our inner aspirations and people that inspire you are merely people that mirror the qualities that you are waiting and ready to express yourself.

People who Irritate you, can be Great TeachersFrom a different perspective it is true too that people, who irritate us are also a reflection of some characteristics that we are hiding from ourselves or aspects that we are unclear on in our own lives. So if anyone irritates you, look at the reason that they are so challenging and see if that may be an area that needs work in your own life.

This is a very powerful tool that when used properly will allow you to uncover some very real issues in your own life. The issues that you find the most irritating in someone else is often just a reflection of a characteristic that you are dissatisfied with in your own life.

Unlock your GreatnessHave the courage to be completely honest with yourself and utilise this very empowering process to unlock issues that may be keeping you trapped in mediocrity.

When you make this small shift in the way you view people around you. You empower yourself to utilise the feedback from people in your environment to your advantage.

Why do some People bug you?Take a critical look at the people all around you and try to identify people that are bugging you. Explore the reasons why they are driving you batty and record these in your journal.

Take a deep breath, have the courage to be brutally honest with yourself. Examine the list again, exploring each one from the perspective of "Could this be my issue" and then see what action is necessary to eliminate these negative characterist! ics from your own life.

This can be a very powerful success tool in your success toolkit. As you observe the people around you, it is possible to utilse this information, to explore your own philosophy, characteristics and attitude.

If someone irritates you, or you find something about them extremely distasteful, try to explore the reasons why you feel that way. It may be that they are just the wrong people for you and they are on a completely different path to you, but it could also offer you a great insight into your own shortcomings.

Learn the art of understanding your responses to your world and the people in it. This skill offers you a wonderful window into your inner self and gives you the ability to identify areas of challenge or weakness, which you may not have observed in yourself, had you not had the courage to see through the eyes of those who irritate you.

Surround yourself with the right PeopleIt is far easier to be inspired every day, when the people you surround yourself with, are people who support you, reflect your values and beliefs and are on the same track as you. So obviously, it is good practice to work to only surround yourself with the right people.

My invitation today is to have the courage to explore the people who you do not want around you and to then try to discover why, you don't want them in your life. Once you have explored and learned as much as you can about all the things you don't like. Use this to examine your own life and see how you can use this information to help you to improve and grow.

Breast Growth Disorder Harms Teen Girls' Health

A condition that causes abnormal enlargement of the breasts can be detrimental to the mental and physical health of teen girls, according to a new study.

In the study, teen girls with the condition, called macromastia, reported lower quality of life, lower self -esteem, more breast pain and more eating disorders compared with those without the condition.

The findings suggest that early intervention to alleviate breast symptoms may improve the health of teen girls with macromastia, the researchers say.

In adult women, surgery to reduce breast size improves breast symptoms and self-esteem. Future studies should examine the effect of breast-reduction surgery on teens to further develop treatment recommendations for this group, the researchers say.

Macromastia, also called gigantomastia, is a rare condition characterized by excessive growth of the breasts that can occur spontaneously during puberty, pregnancy or while taking certain medications, according to the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences' Office of Rare Disease Research.

The exact cause of the condition is not known, but an increased sensitivity to hormones or increased hormone production may be involved.

Macromastia often develops during adolescence, but the effects of the condition on younger people have not been rigorously studied.

Dr. Brian Labow, of the Department of Plastic and Oral Surgery at Children's Hospital Boston, and colleagues surveyed 96 teen girls with macromastia considering breast reduction surgery, and 103 teen girls without the condition between 2008 and 2011. The average age of the participants in both groups was about 18.

The teens answered questions about their quality of life, self-esteem, breast symptoms (such as breast pain or the presence of painful bra-strap grooves) and eating behaviors.

The most commonly reported bra cup size among the girls with macromastia was DD, while among the girls without the condition it was B.

Participants with macromastia reported higher rates of breast pain and skin rashes, along with back, neck and shoulder pain, the researchers said. They were more likely to say they had a hard time participating in sports and finding clothes that fit, and that there was a size difference between their breasts.

About 18 percent of participants with macromastia had eating disorder problems, compared with 6.6 percent of those without the condition.

The findings held even after the researchers took into account body mass indexes (participants with macromastia tended to have higher BMIs).

"Health-care providers should be aware of the emotional and physical impact of macromastia, and consider early evaluation for this disorder," the researchers write today (July 16) in the journal Pediatrics.

Pass it on:  Teen girls with macromastia suffer physical and mental health impairments.

Tips on Choosing Good Debt Reduction Programs

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Article by Mark Hengrry

As of January 31, 2011, the Total Public Debt Outstanding in the US stood at .13 trillion. This amount is nearly 96.4% of the country's annual GDP for 2010, which came in at .7 trillion. Although some part of this huge debt can be correlated to the recent recession and its aftermath, a large part of it is actually due to the growing dependence of people on credit cards and living beyond one's means. Most of the times, the debt accumulates even before one fully realizes how bad the situation is and the high interest rates on repayment just go to make matters worse. Living under the cloud of debt can be truly stressful. The good news is that there are various debt reduction programs that can make this burden more manageable. Debt management firms offer their services in terms of consultancy, guidance and financial solutions for people who are unable to repay their debt. The professionals at such firms have wide experience in debt negotiation, debt consolidation and debt reduction programs.

How to Choose Debt Reduction Programs

Here are few to tips that can help you choose from among the debt reduction programs to find one that will work for you:

Do Some ResearchThe first step is to conduct thorough research on the various programs available. Study each one in detail and try to list their pros and cons. You should be aware of all the fine print and terms and conditions before you sign the final agreement.

Seek ReferencesTalk to people you know who have been in debt and might have used debt reduction programs to overcome the situation. Ask them for references of reliable debt management companies and programs that have helped them.

Track Record When you are short listing the debt management companies through whom you can access the debt reduction program, make sure you check their track record and client testimonials to ensure that they are able to deliver what they promise.

AccreditationsIt is extremely important that you choose a program offered by an accredite! d compan y, since this will minimize the risk of fraud. Accredited companies are usually certified by USOBA or IAPDA. Accredited debt negotiators will not only possess knowledge of the laws and methods of debt settlement but have wide experience in getting positive results for their clients.

ChargesDo not forget to ask for quotes before you sign the final agreement. Do not sign on with a company that asks for up-front payment. In fact, a reliable firm will offer an initial consultation for free. Make sure you check all their policies and terms and conditions before signing them on and ensure that all the details are included in a written contract.

Safeguarding the words

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Having been raised in what can only be described as a shaman household, I literally sat on the laps of mystics, soothsayers, and the Mexican shaman Jesse.  When I became a Zen Buddhism I could see spirituality written on every page of text that I read.

From deep within me emerged the drive to seek enlightenment.  It was not a negative drive born of fear or desperation; it was rather very positive.  I simply loved to study Buddhism and think about it all the time.  It was like being in love with the most beautiful and dearest person imaginable.  It was a magnificent obsession. Everything else was boring if not frankly stupid. (I later discovered that being bored is the hangover from drinking the whiskey of materialism.)

To be on such a spiritual quest—and that is what it is—requires of one to safeguard (anurakkhati) the words of the Buddha; not to dismiss them.  Even if the adept doesn't understand 99% of what they read in the Buddha's discourses the seeker must safeguard these words because as they mature, the Buddha's discourses will start to make sense.  If the words of the Buddha are not safeguarded nothing but confusion will arise.

While we may believe that we pretty much understand what the Buddha was teaching, we eventually will  discover that we were greatly mistaken.  So that's why we safeguard the words of the Buddha.  This old dude was the greatest genius ever.

Meditation is Healthy

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 04:00 AM PDT

Meditation
by ario_

Article by Rune S.

People have been doing meditation for thousands of years and now researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is trying to find out if it really has any effect on us.

Eight weeks of meditation 41 people were divided into two random groups, where one had to go to weekly meditation and do daily exercises at home. The rest lived as usual, and thus acted as a control group.

After eight weeks of meditation, scientists measured the electrical activity in the anterior part of the brain. As it turned out the meditators group had increased activity on the left side, something you often see when people feel positive and optimistic. Such activity is also associated with reduced anxiety and a general positive feeling state.

Strengthened immune system To test the meditation effect on the immune system, all 41 was given influenza vaccine after the experiment. This means specifically that the immune system reacts, and stock antibody, and thus researchers could see if meditation made any difference.

It did. Both four and eight weeks after the vaccine the group that meditated had a much higher level of antibodies in the blood.

- Although this was a small study, and they have to investigate more on the field to say, the result is very encouraging, said Dr. Richard Davidson, who heads the project. University of Wisconsin-Madison has one of the few communities in the world to research on meditation.

Cooperating with the Dalai Lama The researchers have included collaboration with the Dalai Lama, and he has been one of the world's foremost practitioners of meditation that now is joining the researchers team. Lama on his side was very interested in the university's brain-scanning equipment.

The aim of this investigation to determine whether meditation can really be a useful tool in medicine, psychology and education, says the team. Currently, they do surveys on a group of people who meditated regularly for over 30 years.

But the road to knowledge is still long. This ! first su rvey was just a little test that can provide a more firm conclusion that meditation is healthy, and it looks promising, this is definitely worth further research.

Learn meditation, find enlightenment. Mindfulness is a type of meditation that essentially involves focusing on your mind in the present. To be mindful is to be aware of your thoughts and actions in the present, without judging yourself. Research suggests that mindfulness meditation may improve mood, decrease stress, and boost immune function. Meditation makes you happy and healthy, and is completely free. YOU MEET SOMEONE. YOU LIKE SOMEONE. WHAT NEXT?

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 02:00 AM PDT

Article by Dr Rakesh Chopra - Relationship Spiritual Mentor

The most delicate advice people seek in any budding relationship is -What next? Meeting somebody is very easy & liking can even be an infatuation. AND if relationship parameters have not been well defined & established, it can lead to a life full of pain. So what do you want: pain, pleasure or BLISS in the relationship? Pleasure can again be short lived. A wrong advice around pleasure can lead to a disaster also. So be careful.

People have a habit of expressing their best when they meet somebody for a shortwhile like at parties, or in college or at any official gathering. You may have the opportunity to meet the person you are focusing on for a strong relationship even 100 times but everytime the best in him is visible. Even he is conscious to project the best in himself. Liking is different but love is not possible only with strong points.

Many persons make their life-time decisions only on the basis of liking & even before the first anniversary comes, the clashes start & relationship ends up in living hatred for the person they had focused to live love for. Relationship Advice is to wait for making any long-term decision till love has been established.

Love is a state of total acceptance under all circumstances. Are you prepared to accept the person as he is & extend total care without any expectations? If yes then go ahead. But that is again the beginning of the relationship from your side ONLY. Till love happens in his mind for you, it is wisdom not to take him for granted. And even when he commits in love, still the relationship advice remains - never to expect anything from him. If he loves you, he will do all what he feels for your comfort. That is his decision indeed & not yours.

The best method to feel a person, is to live with him for some time. You can assess a person only when you are in a position to feel every feeling & move he is making during all 24 hours & that too at least for a week at stretch. But is it pos! sible to live with him even before the relation even takes off? Live-in relationship is not acceptable in many countries or religions. AND even you yourself may not feel comfortable to live with a person before the trust in the relationship has been established.

But the fact is you like the person!! This therefore is a point to seek advice on - what to do? Yes the good news is that there are so many dignified possibilities. First is to develop an association with someone who is living 24 hours with that person - his brother, sister, mother or even a close neighbor. Silently keep on asking about the whole family & not about that particular individual you are focusing to have relationship with. This way you will have the unbiased information about the person. The second is to join some week-long college picnic where both of you are going along with so many more also. The third is to be their family guest - get invitation from some other person than the person-in-focus on some pretext. This will give you the opportunity to feel him right in front of you. That forms the best relationship advice for you.

At times you may get the opportunity to be real close to him & have interactions on multiple subjects. Remember, he is only sharing his general opinion & his feelings expressed are not for you. Until & unless some specific questions are asked, the relationship advice is, never to take his feelings to your heart. The fact is, he did not mention all this keeping you in his mind. There is a possibility that he might just be testing his own judgment about how he will be living in a relationship & those may not be even his own tested beliefs. Casual commitments made by him must not be taken for granted as those will only give pain. Even when he has made commitment please AND PLEASE do confirm by asking him under different circumstances. See that he is comfortable to share his commitment for you in his close circle of friends & relatives.

I want your life to! be blis sful. I belong to you in Divine Purity so for any specific relationship advice please keep in touch with me.

For it is the layers of our multidimensional selves that is capable of astral travel and all other forms of extra sensory perception (ESP) or the paranormal... Ironcially, the cultprit to our mental, spiritual and psycological break down, are the very things that we are taught to celebrate, love and embrace as social norms!

Death: Pre-Planned Fate? Free Will Choice? Or Something Else?

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 01:00 AM PDT

Article by Janice Ervin, Spiritual Lecturer & Theorist

I recently received an email from a couple who lost their son during a boating accident. The father wrote that they 'have to believe everything happens for a reason... even if that reason is beyond understanding.' Another lost her spouse during a brutal crime. She wrote, 'As hard as it seems right now, I believe that somehow God did this for a reason.' And still a third wrote to me that a well meaning friend told them, 'God must have needed another angel and he picks only the best.'Such comments always leave me sad - they misconstrue the bond of love between us and our Source. In his search for understanding, Aristotle once commented, 'As above, so below'....such a simple yet profound concept. I believe we are provided with direction for insight should we choose to be open to it. To understand that which is beyond our reach, 'above', we can view that which is within our reach here, 'below'. So, while the maxim of pure, divine love is FAR outside our comprehension, the potential for human love is tangible and in itself, quite awe inspiring. And the more we enhance our capacity to love as humans, the closer we come to glimpsing the magnificence of divine love.

It's easy! Let's try it out. Often times, the Source of all is referred to as a 'father' or 'mother' and we are referred to as 'children'. So, to understand the love Source has for us...let's compare it to the love we have for our children.

Infants, alert and curious, lay on their back kicking their legs watching their parents every move. An act as old as time, is for the parent to hover their index fingers above the baby's eye line, willing the infant to reach up and hold. Fascinated and bright eyed, the babe stares for a bit, and then slowly reaches forward, wrapping each of their teeny fists around those two grown up fingers. Then, in that unspoken pure act of trust, the parent slowly pulls the baby forward to a sitting position, as the wee one holds on excitedly.

The day comes, when we slowly disengage our finger from ou! r tiny o nes, and with our heart in our eyes, watch them take those first shaky steps. Though they sometimes fall, we are there beside them, helping to try again. We are there when they first learn to ride a bike, and can only run behind them for so long holding on to the back end. Then we let go, and watch their shaky maneuvers as they seek their own balance.

With each of their accomplishments we rejoice, and with each of their heartaches we hurt too. As children mature, the lessons become more refined. They learn to drive, balance a check book, and use a credit card. They learn how to interact with others, selecting friends and life partners. They make their own way in the world, as we watch from a distance, never ceasing to love.

The thing is, we inherently understand that letting go may mean pain for one we love. Yet this very act provides the opportunity for them to exercise their free will, fall, get back up, achieve ground and learn. With each experience, those 'shaky legs' become strong and sure footed. Though we take more of a background position, we are joined at heart. It's not a testament to our loving them less, and it's not a choice to cause them hurt. Yet letting go offers them the breath to become something more - something greater - and we rejoice for them.

Would you ever remove that gift of free will from your child? I think not...even when everything inside of you cries out to clip their wings and hold them close. As a good friend once said to me, 'A gilded cage is still a cage.'

Working with the parameters of this concept, how can one be a parent, and watch a child grow, and not comprehend a thimble full of the love felt for us by our source? How can one have a beloved pet, plant or even possession, and not want it to be cherished? If such imperfect beings as ourselves can feel that way, why would we believe that a much greater source loves less?

Here's my thought.

Maybe He is THE ultimate source only of pure love and all that is good. And if He IS a l! ove so p ure that it's beyond our human comprehension, how could He want less than perfection for us, than we would want for someone we love? Why would His reasoning be such that he would deliberately inflict pain and heartache to accomplish a goal, and visit atrocities upon us? Even completely fallible creatures such as ourselves don't desire less for those we truly love.

So, maybe the horrors of this world do not happen for some pre-designed divine reason we can't possibly fathom. Maybe He doesn't need these 'angels' in heaven with Him, and hasn't selected to take them away from us. Instead, maybe we exist in these beautiful miraculous physical forms, with hearts that beat from our first breath, hair that grows, eyes that see and blood which courses through veins without our conscious thought. But with all this capability, these forms are not immune to fatal blows or disease. They are well designed though temporary vessels to experience the full breath of human existence, for as long as possible. Maybe the goal isn't to stay, but to experience, learn and transcend.

Maybe the goal of Source is not to cause us sadness and we truly have the gift of eternal free will to love on our own accord, make decisions, and evolve. But with that gift comes the awesome responsibility of the choice made - they can take us high, or bring us low. Maybe instead, rooted in divine love, the desire is to watch us take 'shaky steps', possibly fall, then gain ground, learn, grow, and share love to empower others and enact positive change.

And when one chooses to harm another, or when a disease we do not yet understand, borne of an unbalanced ecosystem we created, attacks our physical form, that physical form simply can not withstand the harm inflicted and ceases to function. Yet the essence which is eternal can't be harmed and continues to live on and love.

Maybe this Source of love aches for each of these 'children' that falters, harms and hurts - watching and waiting as they grow, with them, spirit-connecti! ng-to-sp irit when they call out. Maybe this Source is nearby with that divine love outpouring, patiently waiting for each of us to open our awareness, and share the message of love, to raise the vibration on this plane and obliterate the less enlightened energy that brings us so low.

Sleepwalking Through Your Life? Here's How Mindfulness Can Help.

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Article by Gerard O'Donovan

Have you ever sat down to watch TV with a bowl of popcorn on your lap, then suddenly realized twenty minutes later the bowl was empty? Have you ever driven somewhere and arrived safely, only to realize you didn't really remember the trip? These kinds of experiences happen to everyone. Today, many of us refer to this mindless activity as "being on autopilot". Many daily habits can be completed without our full attention. It seems our minds are constantly running ahead to the next activity to be completed, the next phone call, or meeting, or place we need to be.

All of this multi-tasking, however, is taking its toll on our lives. A bit of inattention now and then is not necessarily a bad thing. But sleepwalking through life, always rushing off to the next thing and never truly living "in the moment", can come at a high cost. Relationships with family, friends, and coworkers eventually suffer. We miss out on the special moments that happen every day. We ignore important messages about our health, our well-being and our life. Our bodies and minds remain in a perpetual state of stress and self-criticism for not being "better, doing "more" and being "more successful."

If multi-tasking is the disease, then mindfulness is the cure. Mindfulness is the practice of paying more attention to ourselves and the world around us; achieving an awareness of what is going on inside our minds and bodies, and outside, at the very moment. We all have the ability to practice mindfulness. It is a simple matter of establishing a new habit of paying attention, not to what you have to do tomorrow or ten minutes from now, but right now, in this minute. Or, as some describe it, to simply be "here" as life unfolds before us.Once you are able to understand and grasp the spirit of mindfulness, it is the "doing" that helps one to become more informed, responsive and healthier in body, mind and soul. Every minute of every day takes on new meaning, and your ability to embrace life and find much-needed emotional and physi! cal bala nce becomes effortless. While mindfulness can force us to face painful issues long buried, most people are happy to remove old burdens and embrace the future with a renewed zeal for life after learning how to apply mindfulness in their everyday life.

Of course, achieving this state of relaxed, aware mindfulness takes some practice. And that is exactly what will occur when you accept this special invitation from the U.K's leading professional coaching company, Noble-Manhattan, LLC. Join founder Gerard O'Donovan and Scott Milway, a highly-respected trainer from the Deepak Chopra organization, on the two-week mindfulness expedition known as Noble Quest. During your mindfulness adventure, you will learn the full Primordial Sound Meditation Course and join in daily meditations as you spend time with the locals and come to know and understand the peoples and cultures of Vietnam and Cambodia. You will climb the highest mountain in Vietnam and in IndoChina, Mount Fan Si Pan. How to Meditate For Inner Wisdom

Posted: 15 Jul 2012 11:00 PM PDT

Article by sarah labdar

When most people think about meditation they think of someone sitting Indian style on the floor with their eyes closed, breathing in and out. Although this thinking is not entirely wrong it doesn't explain what mediation is or how you benefit from it. The purpose of meditation is subjective to each participant, however the ultimate go is clarity, peace and enlightenment. Normally practiced independently, the objective of each individual experience is to calm a stressful, chaotic, and rampant mind. A peaceful mind can be more focused and able to experience true happiness. Meditation dates back to the prehistoric eras and has been incorporated in religious and spiritual worship for thousands of years. Presently, meditation is most correlated with the Buddhist religion, however is also used in several other religions such as Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Taoist, and Jewish Kabbalah. In Buda, meditation is used for two reasons, to transform the mind and to explore the mind. The ultimate goal is to reach enlightenment, which for Buddhists means to free oneself from suffering. The act of meditation is to go beyond regular everyday impulsive thinking. The idea is to get to a deeper state of being, relaxation or awareness. Benefits that mediation totes include achievement of a higher state of consciousness, compassion and loving kindness, greater focus, creativity or self-awareness, and simply a more relaxed and peaceful frame of mind. Meditation allows the practitioner to free their mind of all the chaos in the world. It also allows the person to focus on singular goals making them more focused and determined once finished with the meditation. Well, meditation is not as easy as it sounds. The 21st century lifestyle doesn't allow for very much time to think, regardless of having enough time to meditate. Because of our lifestyles we are constantly on the go, doing things, so our minds are constantly racing. However, meditation can allow the mind to calm and be more focused to actually get things! done. W hen you meditate it needs to be quiet, you need to be able to clear your mind of everything that you have to do, that you need to do or that you want to do. The next step is to keep your posture and focus on your breathing. I don't know if you have ever tried to sit up straight, with your eyes closed, and focus on your breathing even for just 10 minutes. It's hard! But it's not impossible. Start out with a small amount of time and build on it each time you meditate. Try to get into a routine. As you meditate daily, your body and mind will be come accustomed to a calming and peaceful nature. It is at this time that you will obtain true happiness. As meditation becomes more and more popular as not only a religious or spiritual practice but as an alternative medicine, meditation instructors are becoming more available for people who want to start practicing. Meditation although mainly practiced in solitary can be learned and taught in-group settings. Once you begin to meditate and really become self-aware, you will want to meditate every day.

Karmic Connections from the Past

Posted: 15 Jul 2012 11:00 PM PDT

Ven. Dr. Ananda, Ven. Dr. Thich Thien An, Zen Master Seung Sahn, Maezumi Roshi and Kozan Roshi.

We have recently taken over the operations of the Meditation Studies Institute – Los Angeles from its previous parent organization the International Meditation Meditation Center. The Meditation Studies Institute - Los Angeles was founded in 1973 by Venerable Dr. Thich Thien-an as the International Meditation Training Institute, at the International Meditation Meditation Center in Los Angeles, California. As an autonomous division of the University of Oriental Studies, the International Meditation Training Institute was conceived with the specified purpose of offering Western style seminary training to Meditation Monastics from around the world, whilst not neglecting the inherent experiential nature of Meditation monastic training, in favor of secularly slanted academia.

Following the passing of Ven. Dr. Thich Thien-An in 1980, the University of Oriental Studies suspended its classes, and the International Meditation Training Institute was consequently reorganized in September of 1983 as the College of Meditation Studies - Los Angeles under the leadership of Ven. Dr. Havanpola Ratanasara and Ven. Dr. Karuna Dharma (a.k.a. Thich An T! u).

In November of 2004, Ven. Dr. Karuna Dharma charged Ven. Dr. Kelsang Chitta Karuna with restructuring the program as the Meditation Studies Institute – Los Angeles, transitioning the program into a primarily online educational facility. Moving beyond the confines of a brick and mortar institution, BSI-LA now provides accessibility to a greater number of students from around the world, whilst carrying on the original mission and vision of Ven. Dr. Thich Thien-An.

In the course of some research to bring to life some the history of this Meditation University, I discovered that the founding President of the University was a man by the name of Leo M. Pruden, PhD. That name seemed somehow vaguely familiar to me so I began to do some research.

News From The Dharma Realm

Scholar and Translator

In January the Sino-American Meditation Association had the opportunity ! to welco me Leo M. Pruden, Professor of Religious Studies at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, to Gold Mountain Monastery.  Professor Pruden was accompanied by Mr. Lee Haeng-won (Zen Master Seung Sahn) with whom he is currently sponsoring the Providence Zen Center, an organization which is introducing Meditation to the East Coast. Professor Pruden has traveled widely and studied in Asia, and is very much concerned with the translation of Meditation scriptural material from Asian languages into English.

On a recent trip to the West Coast he stopped in San Francisco to visit Gold Mountain and pay his respects to the Venerable Abbot and members of the Sangha. He looked into the Monastery's varied and intense schedule of activities, and discussed the importance of cooperation among the Sangha and lay community, regardless of nationality or sectarian affiliations, in order that the Buddhadharma might flourish. Professor Pruden praised the work being done by the Association, especially the Vajra Bodhi Sea Publication Society, and said that he hoped scholars of the Sangha and lay community can work together on translation projects in the future so that the Buddha's teachings might be quickly and accurately brought to the West.

Then I came across this article.

Seung Sahn Sunim came to America in 1972 at the invitation of Yu Young Soo, a friend and Dong Guk University alumnus. He started Zen teaching in Kingston, Mass. to a group of college students whom Professor Jong Sun Kim brought. The number of followers grew and he soon moved to Providence, Rhode Island. On October 10, 1972, he established the first Providence Zen Center and the KBC (Korean Meditation Chogye Order) Hong Poep Won in Providence. This organization oversaw Meditation groups under his direction. Chung Jung Dahn Sunim joined him briefly in Providence. He met Dr. Leo Pruden at Brown University, who came to his aid and provided the translation for his Dharma talks. By 1975 three other Zen centers were established in New York, Cambridge and New Haven all under his leadership. By 1979, five more Zen centers had formed under his direction.

Then on the Wiki Page for the Providence Zen Center.

The Providence Zen Center was established by Seung Sahn in October 1972 on Doyle Avenue in Providence, Rhode Island as the first practice center for his American students. The center came to be after Brown University professor Leo Pruden had invited Seung Sahn to give talks on Buddhism at the university, with several of the students thereafter coming to him for teachings. After relocating in 1974 to 48 Hope Street, the PZC came into possession of a 50-acre (200,000 m2) plot of land in 1978 located in Cumberland, Rhode Island.

I always knew there was a connection between Dr. Thich Thien-an and Zen Master Seung Sahn, but I never understood the valuable link that Dr. Pruden had played in helping Seung Sahn create the beginnings of the Kwan Um School of Zen and in helping Dr. Thien-an start the Meditation Studies Institute. In addition, all of this was occurring at the same time.

There are so many deep-seated connections between all these initial pioneers of the Dharma that it may take many many years to discover their true depth. I only know that there were a lot more interactions between sanghas back then than there are today.

How to Use Mind Maps to Improve Your Business

Posted: 15 Jul 2012 10:00 PM PDT

Mindfulness
by RubyJi

Article by Jason King

At some point we all have the need to brainstorm, either individually or in groups. Whether we're trying to come up with new ideas, organise tasks or plan our future work brainstorming is a good method for achieving these goals.

However, how do we document these ideas when they're coming in thick and fast? We could write a list, but lists are boring, too linear and lack any kind of useful structure.

We need a way of organising information in a way which is simple, intuitive and has a structure which enables us to take that information and use it effectively when the brainstorming session is over.

What we need is a mind map...

What Are Mind Maps?

A mind map is basically a diagram which we can use to graphically represent ideas, all based around a central problem which we wish to solve.

For example, you plan to start a new business selling donuts and need to brainstorm some ideas. You'd start with a piece of paper and right in the middle you'd write "Donut Business". Then around it in a circle you'd write all the main aspects of the business as words or short phrases. Eg. "Premises", "Customers", "Products", "Marketing", "Suppliers", "Pricing", etc.

After drawing a line between them and the central "Donut Business" you'd then look at each individual aspect in turn and expand on it with new ideas. Taking "Premises" first you could write "Shop" and "Van" and then draw a line from them to "Premises".

Imagine doing this and continually creating a hierarchy outwards from the central item, "Donut Business" in our example, expanding on each idea and sub idea. That's what a mind map is and that's exactly how you'd create one.

How Mind Maps Can Improve Your Business

Mind maps are easy to create and they work in a similar hierarchical way to how your brain works when brainstorming and organising information. This makes them especially intuitive to use for many different applications.

Whether it's brainstorming ideas, planning, org! anising, problem solving, team building or designing, mind maps are a great way of structuring thoughts.

They're especially useful for organising input from a group of people and there's no strict rules for how you use them, just do what works for you. You can even use different colours and symbols if it helps express your thoughts.

As with any brainstorming exercise it's good to put all ideas into your mind map, even if you think it's a really bad idea. Put it in anyway and maybe add a red cross next to it so you know to avoid it. Knowing what ideas to avoid is often as important as knowing what ideas you should pursue further.

Once you have your mind map you can then put the information it contains into any form which you will find useful later. Whether it's a document, a plan, a checklist or presentation it doesn't matter. What matters is that the process of using a mind map helped you generate that information in the first place.

Where to Find Free Mind Mapping Tools

So what tools do you need to create your mind maps? There are many software tools available which you can buy if you wish, but you don't need to spend a penny. If you need loads of fancy features then maybe paying for tools is the way to go. However, let's stick with the free stuff here.

You can start with coloured pens and paper if you like. It works for me sometimes. How many great business ideas have grown up from an idea drawn on a napkin while in a restaurant? Joking aside, you'd be surprised how many really have.

As were supposed to be in the dawn of the information age now, may I suggest using a free software tool instead. There's many available out there but the one I use is called FreeMind.

If you wish to try it then this is the official site where you can find out more and download it:

http://freemind.sourceforge.net

I've come up with many a crazy idea using this tool and I've never felt the need to use any other. It's free because it's licensed under the GNU General Pu! blic Lic ense. I use it on Windows but it also runs on Linux and Mac OS X.

Kong-an Blues

Zen Master Seung Sahn and Zen Master Su Bong in Korea

(from Dropping ashes on the Buddha)
March 4, 1975
Dear Soen-sa-nim,

Enclosed you will find an assortment of letters I have written and never mailed to you, so here they are. My practice is I don't know what. It is neither good nor bad, I guess, but still I don't know what. It seems I don't know what about anything, which seems different from I don't know what.

Tell me about shakuhachi practice. It is my ego that wants to play well. How can I just play? As I watch my playing I sense today that all things are like those music notes on the page. It says: move third finger. How can I learn to live each moment as when ! each not e directs me and fulfill that request as best I can? I don't really know what I am saying but I must write you and I hope I mail these letters to you.

See Hoy (aka: Zen Master Su Bong)

March 5, 1975

Dear Soen-sa-nim,

I am very confused. Since you are not here I go to sit with Venerable Hearn and sometimes Dr. Thien-An. Venerable Hearn is here only once a week for dokusan and will be leaving for the Asian countries at the end of the month. Once, soon after you went to Providence, I went to visit with Roshi Kozan Kimura. Here are a list of kong-ans given to me:

From you: "What am I?"
"Why does Bodhidharma have no beard?"

From Venerable Hearn: "What is the sound of the flute with no holes?'' One day he said to me, "Now show me your understanding of this," and gave me the kong-an, "Can you drive a nail without a hammer?"

Dr. Thien-An: "Where do you find Buddha-nature?"
My answer: "Galloping through, it is all around. How could it leave a trace?"
He said: "Go work on it some more."
Kimura Roshi said I should decide on one Master. I told him you were not here. He told me I should follow you around and go to Providence. He said he likes me to come and sit Zen with them but would not give me dokusan lest he interfere with another's kong-an. Last night I went to sit with him and had no dokusan. Tonight I went to sit and went to dokusan. He said I should only work on one kong-an and ask ed me to meditate on "When were you born?" After all others were finished with dokusan, I went back and answered with, "Since there is no trace, how should I know?" We then talked and he asked me what other kong-ans I had and which I worked on. I told him I work most on "What am I?" He said it is too hard for beginners and I should work on "When were you born?"

Please advise me, because when I sit Zen I can only ask -rather, I like only to ask-"What am I?" and even at other times only "What am I?" I do not know what to do. Shall I just go and sit with Kozan but have no dokusan? Shall I come to Providence? But here I have so many attachments and even to you attachment.

Sometimes I remember you asking "What am I?" and can even get angry with you for giving me such a thing. Even now I am attached to "What am I?" and the thought
of "When was I born?" makes me want to vomit, because all these things are puzzling my head. I will sit more zazen tonight and only think "What am I?" Please help me bec! ause I t hink only you can take "What am I?" back.

Please answer me soon, but you probably won't, huh? Anyway, I'd like to tell you to go fuck yourself.

Respectfully, and hope to see you soon,

See Hoy (aka: Zen Master Su Bong)

March 22, 1975

Dear See Hoy,

Thank you for your two letters. I have been in New York since the beginning of the month, so I didn't receive them until a few days ago. That's why my answer is so late. I am sorry.

You say that you don't know what your practice is, that you don't know anything. But then you say that you are ! confused . If you keep a complete don't-know mind, how can confusion appear? Complete don't-know mind means cutting off all thinking. Cutting off all thinking means true emptiness. In true emptiness, there is no I to be confused and nothing to be confused about. True emptiness is before thinking. Before thinking, everything does not appear and does not disappear. So the truth is just like this. Red comes, there is red; white comes, there is white. When you close all the holes of the shakuhachi, there is no sound; when the holes are open, there is a high sound. Only like this. The shakuhachi is a very good teacher for you. If you don't understand, just ask the shakuhachi. Just enter the sound of the shakuhachi, and the shakuhachi will explain to you what enlightenment is.

Dr. Thien-An, Song Ryong Hearn, and Kimura Roshi are all good teachers. I think you can take your questions and problems to any of them and they will teach you well. You have many kong-ans. But a kong-an is like a finger pointing at the moon. If you are attached to the finger, you don't understand the direction, so you cannot see the moon. If you are not attached to any kong-an, then you will understand the direction. The direction is the complete don't know mind. The name for "like this" is "don't know." If you understand "don't know," you will understand all kong-ans
and you will soon understand "like this."

You have many problems in your kong-an work. "What am I?" -do you understand this? Your answer is, "I don't know." "When were you born?"-do you understand this? Your answer is also, "I don't know." If you are not attached to words, the don't-know mind is the same. All kong-ans become the same don't-know mind. Your don't-know mind, my don't-know mind, all people's don't-know minds, the "What am I?" don't-know mind, the "When was I born?" don't-know mind-all these are the same don't-know. So it is very easy. Only keep don't-know. Don't be attached to words. This don't-know is your true self. It is nothing at all. It is very easy, not difficult.

So you must keep only don't-know, always and everywhere. Then you will soon get enlightenment. But be very careful not to want enlightenment. Only keep don't-know mind.

Your situation, your condition, your opinions-throw them all away.

I think it would be very good for you to learn with Kimura Roshi. I hope you also listen to what your shakuhachi ! is teach ing you and soon get enlightenment. At the end of your letter you say, "Go fuck yourself." These are wonderful words that you have given me, and I thank you very much. If you attain enlightenment, I will give them back to you.

Sincerely yours,
SS

All You Need to Know About Meditation and Relaxation

Posted: 15 Jul 2012 09:00 PM PDT

Article by linxiaoxi

Meditation is defined as a state where the body and the mind are extremely focused all the while staying relaxed. People, who practice meditation define the technique as an art to increase focus, awareness, and concentration, they also profess that meditation provides a much more positive outlook to life.chi hair straighteners

The technique of meditation is generally associated with spiritual disciplines like, monks and mystics. For anyone to try mediation you do not have to become a monk or a mystic who practice and enjoy its benefits. There is no requirement for a special place our special room to practice it; it can just be done in your own bedroom or even the living room!

Among the many different approaches to meditation, all approaches follow some common fundamental principles. The most important aspect of these principles is the fact that one needs to remove all the obstructive, negative as well as wandering thoughts and even fantasies to calm the mind to a deep sense of focus. This clears and focuses the mind away from oil distractions and allows you to achieve a higher sense of activity.

The removal of negative thoughts and distractions that pollute the mind is like cleansing the mind of distractions, allowing you to focus on the task ahead with more meaningful and deeper thoughts. Some practitioners of the method often resort to shutting out all sensory input to detach them from the material world. They deprive themselves from all visual, auditory as well as touch senses. This allows them to focus on a more profound and deep thought which their ultimate goal is.

The practice may seem quite absurd but can work wonders for the perfect mediation session. After this self-inflicted sensory deprivation practitioners claim that they are more aware of their surroundings than ever before. For people looking to learn mediation from the television it is highly ill-advised as often the positions on the television are not targeted to a physically able or unable person. And for ! newcomer s the inability to contort them into the perfect position can be a little discouraging and can also make them lose interest in meditation.

The best position for any newcomer is the very comfortable sitting position where you are actually sitting them comfortably cross-legged on the floor or on a mat. In order to meditate properly one does not need a particular position but rather the control of mind. Anyone can meditate by sitting, lying down or even walking it is a state of mind that actually matters not the physical occurrence. Any relaxing position can be used to meditate as long as you are not hindered in any way, for example, tight clothing is a straight no-no as they can choke you up and give you a sense of feeling tense.chi straighteners

The external environment for meditation can also play a huge factor words achieving your target. The best environment for meditation is usually a calm and peaceful place without too many distractions, for example your bedroom can be your best place for meditation.

Silence is the best and most preferred way for relaxing and meditating. Any area which is quiet, isolated or even shut off from any auditory disturbances is considered the best place for meditation. For all those TV-based practitioners out there, seeing the monks meditate while humming a mantra or a short creed can also make them interested in getting their own version of the Creed. These are usually a simple sound which holds a mystic value for the monks; it is usually very spiritually invigorating and uplifting. The most common of these creeds is the OM sound, which is derived from Hindu spirituality.

In all fairness meditation is a very low-risk technique to calm the mind as well as the body of the practitioner. It has several benefits to boast off and is well worth the effort or lack there off as we are all relaxing. Studies on the world have shown that meditation techniques are especially useful for athletes and other people in very stressful daily jobs. The effects of the da! ily stre ss can cause several physiological disorders and diseases like heart disease, nervous breakdowns and even diabetes.

Practicing such techniques does not take up a lot of time and is usually not bound by any time frame and hence, for any person living in the most stressful work situation can also manage to relax for even two minutes a day. Research has shown that meditating daily for a few minutes at most can really do wonders for your blood pressure and even blood sugar levels. Such techniques are well known in reducing digestive stress and even mental stress, the few relaxing moments that you can catch in a day or not actually add up if you cannot focus and relax properly without any hindrance or disturbances.

Whether meditation as any mystical powers in a matter of debate, but arguably it is the best technique available for relaxation.chi hair tools

Lose Weight Yoga How This Exercise From The East Can Help Us Lose Pounds In The West

Posted: 15 Jul 2012 08:00 PM PDT

Article by Trevor Dalley

Do you want to lose weight? Yoga is a good way to shed those pounds, strengthen your muscles, and relax all at the same time. If you want to lose weight, yoga types include vinyasa or flow yoga.

One type of lose weight yoga is Ashtanga. This is a very vigorous style with distinct advantages for people who want to lose weight. Ashtanga practitioners are among the most dedicated yogis.

Beginners are usually encouraged to sign up for a series of multiple classes, which helps keep you motivated. Another advantage of Ashtanga yoga is that once you learn the poses, it is ideal for home practitioners.

Another kind of lose weight Yoga is Power yoga. This is a general term used to describe a vigorous, fitness-based approach to vinyasa yoga. It usually is closely modeled on the Ashtanga style of practice.

The term "power yoga" came into common usage in the mid 1990s. Several yoga teachers were looking for a way to make Ashtanga yoga more accessible to western students and developed the style.

Unlike Ashtanga, power yoga does not follow a strict series of poses. Therefore, power yoga classes can vary widely from each other. What they share is an emphasis on strength and flexibility.

Power yoga started the trend which led to yoga's current popularity, because people began to see yoga as a way to work out. Power yoga brought yoga into the gyms of the west.

Hot Yoga is yoga done in heated rooms. The room is usually maintained at 100 degrees. Vigorous yoga at this temperature promotes profuse sweating which rids the body of toxins making it the perfect lose weight yoga. It also makes the body very warm, and therefore more flexible.

Bikram Choudhury is one of the superstars of Hot Yoga. He developed a method of Hot Yoga involving a set series of 26 yoga poses, including two pranayama exercises, each of which is performed twice in a single 90 minute class.

In addition to lose weight yoga, people are recommended to start meditating, change your diet, start! a daily walking routine, and look for friends who will support you. Yoga alone will not have you lose all of the weight you might want to.

Yoga is excellent exercise, but it doesn't tend to raise the heart level the way working out on a treadmill or in an aerobics class would. Keep these limitations in mind when you seek out lose weight yoga classes.

If you are overweight, you should recognize that your health is important not only to you but also to your loved ones and to society. When you take care of yourself, you are also taking care of those who are dependent on you.

Keep in mind that if you are just beginning in yoga, and are overweight or out of shape, you should choose a beginner-level class even though you are trying to lose weight yoga.www.diabetestype2-diet.com
