Pets May Lower Babies' Infection Rates

Kids who grow up with cats or dogs tend to get fewer respiratory infections during their first year of life, according to a new study from Finland.

Researchers followed 397 children from pregnancy through their first year of life, and found that those living with dogs developed 31 percent fewer respiratory tract symptoms or infections, 44 percent fewer ear infections and received 29 percent fewer antibiotic prescriptions.

Contact with cats was also linked with fewer infections, but the effect was not as drastic as contact with dogs — for example, infants living with cats were 2 percent less likely to need antibiotics.

"We speculated that maybe the dogs somehow can bring dirt or soil inside the house, and then the immune system is strengthened, or maybe it's something about the animals themselves," said study researcher Dr. Eija Bergroth, a pediatrician at the Kuopio University Hospital in Finland.

The link between pets and fewer infections held even when researchers took into account factors known to affect infants' infection rates, such as breast-feeding and number of siblings. Still, the researchers acknowledged that couldn't account for all such factors, and noted that they found a correlation, not a cause-and-effect relationship.

Of the children in the study, 35 percent lived in homes with dogs, and 24 percent lived in homes with cats, though the researchers also accounted for pet contact outside the home.

"According to our results, there's no reason to be afraid of animal contact, or to avoid them," Bergroth said. While many people preparing to have a child attempt to create an extremely hygienic environment, Bergroth said, the results show this may not be the best choice, because the immune system is not challenged. 

The new findings are "incredibly novel," said Dr. Roya Samuels, a pediatrician at Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park, N.Y., who was not involved with the study.

The research builds on the "hygiene hypothesis," a widely accepted theory that posits that children exposed to too-clean environments are more likely to develop allergies and asthma. The findings imply that the benefits of living in an environment that is more challenging to the immune system extend to lower rates of infectious diseases as well, Samuels said, which had not been previously shown.

"We associate exposure to dog and cat dander with lower allergy and asthma rates. But this paper is saying that, for reasons unknown, there is a protective mechanism at work lowering rates of infectious diseases," Samuels said.

However, exactly how this protection might work isn't clear, she said. While the researchers speculated that dirt in the home was behind the link, Samuels said there may be more to the story. Future studies to confirm the findings should further investigate the mechanisms at work, she said.

Bergroth said she hopes the research will stop people from thinking that if "they're having children, they should get rid of animals."

Bergroth emphasized that the children studied lived in rural or suburban areas, so the study results may not translate to urban children. But she also said that urban pets may not track in the same dirt.

Iron Supplements May Ease Women's Fatigue

Taking iron supplements may help ease fatigue in women who have low levels of iron in the blood but are not considered anemic, a new study from researchers in Switzerland suggests.

Researchers found that women with unexplained fatigue, meaning the fatigue was not linked to a medical condition or other known cause, who took an iron pill daily for 12 weeks reported a nearly 50 percent drop in how tired they felt, compared with women taking placebos.

Fatigue is a common complaint heard by doctors during office visits, and there's some evidence that women are three times more likely than men to report feeling a lack of energy. Supplemental iron is the usual treatment for iron-deficiency anemia.

"Our key findings are that iron supplementation can improve the feeling of fatigue in nonanemic women," said study author Paul Vaucher, a neuroscience doctoral student at the University of Geneva.

The research is published online today (July 9) in the Canadian Medical Association Journal and the study was sponsored by a drug company that makes iron supplements.

Feeling less tired

The study involved 198 women in France between the ages of 18 and 53. Researchers gave 102 of the women 80-milligram iron pills to take daily, and 96 women took placebo pills.At the beginning of the study, and after six and 12 weeks, researchers collected blood samples from each participant to monitor their levels of iron, hemoglobin and red blood cells.

After six weeks, various iron-related markers in the blood improved in the women taking iron, and the results showed similar — but not much better — effects at 12 weeks.

That means that iron supplements could be taken for at least six weeks for women suffering from fatigue, Vaucher said, but whether such treatment is right for any woman should be verified by a physician.

The biggest difference the research found was in fatigue, which was measured by self-rated questionnaires, though interestingly, both groups felt less fatigued whether they took iron or the placebo. Women taking iron reported a 48 percent decrease, on average, in tiredness by the end of the study, while the placebo group reported a 29 percent reduction.

Researchers also considered whether a woman's mental healthwas contributing to her exhaustion. But iron supplements had no effect on the women's depression and anxiety scores.

Asked why iron may be effective for combatting fatigue in women with low iron, but not anemic, levels, Vaucher said, "The benefits we observed might not be explained by the effects on blood stores alone."

"Recent neuroscience research suggests that fatigue could be due to the lack of iron in brain tissues, and might be completely independent of iron blood stores," he explained.

A six-week try

Before recommending iron supplements to women with unexplained fatigue, all other possible explanations for fatigue should be considered, said Dr. Jacqueline Wolf, a gastroenterologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, who was not involved in the study. "It's important to find out if a person is getting enough sleep, if they have a healthy diet, if they exercise, and even how stressed they're feeling."

She said the supplements often cause constipation and a blackened stool. That's why Wolf suspected study participants might have figured out whether they were receiving iron or a dummy pill.

Wolf observed that a lot of women in the study got better — their hemoglobin levels increased slightly — whether they were given iron or not. She said this suggests a strong placebo effect, regardless of the treatment.

Wolf also pointed out that "over 50 percent of the people didn't get better when taking the iron," and noted the study's high dropout rate. It's hard to know why some women didn't feel better, and how the dropout rate influenced the results, she said.

"It may be helpful, in some people with fatigue, to take iron supplements for borderline-low iron levels," Wolf said. "I would give iron a six-week trial to see if fatigue improves, and I wouldn't stay on it longer than that."

Circumcision May Lower Urinary Infection Risk

Uncircumcised boys are at a higher risk for urinary tract infections compared with circumcised boys, a new study finds.

The study involved close to 400 boys ages 3 years or younger who went to the hospital with symptoms of a urinary tract infection. Results showed that about 25 percent of uncircumcised boys had urinary tract infections, compared with 5 percent of circumcised boys.

The findings agree with earlier research showing an increased risk of urinary tract infections among uncircumcised boys.

In the new study, the researchers hypothesized that some uncircumcised boys would have a higher risk of infection than others, depending on normal variations of the male anatomy. Uncircumcised boys with a nonvisible or partially visible urethra opening would have a higher risk of urinary tract infection than uncircumcised boys with a completely visible urethra opening, they suggested. (In general, circumcised boys have a more exposed urethral opening than uncircumcised boys.)

However, the results showed that this was not the case — uncircumcised boys had a higher risk of urinary tract infection, regardless of whether their urethra opening was visible.

The findings suggest doctors should consider a boy's circumcision status alone when deciding which boys presented to the emergency department should undergo investigation for a urinary tract infection, the researchers said.

Of the 393 boys in the study, 40 were uncircumcised and had a visible urethral opening, 269 had a partially or nonvisible opening and 84 were circumcised.

Uncircumcised boys are thought to have a higher risk of urinary tract infection because they have a higher level of bacteria growth under the foreskin, the researchers said. The American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend for or against circumcision.

The study, conducted by researchers at Montreal Children's Hospital in Canada, is published today (July 9) in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

Stress levels around the world are on the rise. In order to deal with this, relaxation and stress reduction therapies have sprung up from everywhere. Yoga instruction is no longer just a fringe population idea. It is now a mainstream fitness methodology. Yoga certifications are now available from many places in North America. As a result of this, yoga instructors are now available everywhere. Each gym now offers yoga classes from certified yoga instructors. It's time we understood what this is all about and where we are going with respect to the fitness industry.The word yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning joining or union. What are we joining? The human being consists of several entities commonly referred to as body-mind-spirit. An integrated human being is the goal of yoga. We are joining the different pieces of the human being to make an integrated, holistic being that is attuned to one goal. The body, mind and spirit are all integrated with a common attitude and viewpoint. This is different from the state of being where the body wants to satisfy one need and the mind another and the spirit yet a third. This is the state during which mental storms occur and the body responds in turn with a manifestation of that mental vortex.Yoga seeks to align the human being using its own tool of breathing. When we breathe rhythmically, our body is more in tune with itself. We function better as an integrated being in a holistic way. Yoga was invented in India, about 5000 years ago, precisely to achieve the goal of integration. When our being is aligned our interaction with the world will be more efficient. We perform better at work and in our home life. Rela-tionships become easier. This is what yoga achieves.In India, yoga is taught and researched as a science at a place in Bangalore called the Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusamdhana Samsthan (SVYASA). This means Yoga Research Institute. One can obtain intensive instruction in yoga and therapy techniques using yoga. Recently, I completed a month long certificate cou! rse for yoga instructors at this institute. The yoga that is taught here is not just about the physical poses. The idea of yoga from the original meaning is to really integrate the whole human being. This involves all of our activities in life. We must be aligned and integrated during all of our tasks during the day. All of our activies can be divided into several broad categories. All actions like going to work, eating breakfast are classified as Karma yoga. All philosophical discussions are classified under Jnana yoga. Any devotional activities such as the singing of hymns or prayers are considered part of Bhakti yoga. The physical poses of Western ideas of yoga are a part of Raja yoga, which includes other methods for gaining mastery over the physical body. This is the original concept of yoga from India and is taught in that form at the SVYASA Institute.The institute is named after Swami Vivekananda who was a monk and scholar of Indian philosophy. In 1893, Swami Vivekananda was invited to speak at the Parliament of Religions, held in Chicago, on the topic of Hinduism. His speech became famous for explaining the unity of religions as many paths to God, and that Hinduism in its original sense encompassed that view. Swami Vivekananda wanted the Western world to understand Indian spirituality in the correct view, as a synthesis of the four types of yoga, which ultimately leads to the goal of spiritual evolution. SVYASA is dedicated to the education and research of yoga in this context. The school retains strict attention to the original sources of yoga from Sanskrit scripture.The teaching styles of the school and environmental factors do not cater to the Western lifestyle. Those who come from abroad must acclimatize themselves to the pure Indian way. Meals are served on the floor and must be eaten using the hands. Vegetarian Indian food is served. No cutlery is provided. Footwear must be left outside of all classes. Be prepared to literally be on your feet for long amounts of time. While the majority of the stud! ents are comfortably able to sit on the floor during the long lecture sessions, chairs are available for those who will not be able to survive in that position. The philosophy of discipline is everywhere, starting from the boot camp like nature of the roll call before each session. Students who miss a portion of the attendance will not receive their certificate. Attendance is considered a very important factor of the study. In addition, a strict code of uniforms is enforced. Women must wear the Indian dress of salwaar kameez, which is a tunic, and pant set made of 100% cotton. This dress could be modified to be more forgiving for yoga poses. Men must wear loose fitting track pants and t-shirt. This is more conducive to rigorous physical activity. It must be noted that everywhere the students of the yoga instructors course can be identified by their uniform.As attendance is strict, so is the keeping of students on the grounds. While exceptions can be made for justifiable reasons, students cannot usually leave the campus for any reason after the start of the course. The campus is 32 km north of the major city of Bangalore. Fortunately, Bangalore boasts many amenities including an international airport. The city of Bangalore itself is very multicultural. One can find the modern world mixed with the original flavour of India everywhere. The SVYASA institute has a city office in Bangalore from where a bus is arranged to take travellers to its campus outside the city in a place called Geddallahalli. The name of the campus is Prashanti Kutiram, which means abode of peace. While the name is very amenable to yoga studies, I found that one needs to practice yoga in sincerity to find the true peace, which is only inside the human being.A variety of personal interests and professional paths have led the author to her current role as a personal trainer and lifestyle consultant with over 20 years experience. We stay at school for many years to learn everything we need to know about the world. We still need to learn more about the society after we graduated. Study is something that we should do during our life time. It can make us aware of our merits and demerits, it make us know the universe in a further way. You may be familiar with another proverb says that one is never too old to learn. I think that is correct and smart.

The one who succeed may not necessarily be fairly clever, however, he must be a person who is good at learning. If you want to succeed, do keep in mind to have a state of learning mind.

In addition, it is well known that no pays, no gains. You shoul! d have a mind of paying out for what you want to get. You have to pay two yuan to buy a lottery ticket even if you want to win a prize in a lottery. Paying is a long progress, you won't see any result or outcome in a short time, nevertheless, you'll get the benefits in the long run. If you care too much about what you can get now, you will lose your bright future.

Last but not least, just have an ordinary heart. It is possible that you don't get what you want after you expended time, money and effort. Keep in mind to gain something peacefully, to lose something calmly, to strive for the destiny and to let the nature take its course.

As long as you can do each small things with concentrated attention, wealth and success won't be so far away from you. A good mind as an indication of emotion quotient can decide one's success in career and business to some degree.

If you are always pessimistic and negative, try to change your state of minds now, and you will find it more easy to be succeed.

Buddhist Seminaries in Korea (Kangwŏn) offer students both basic and advanced education in the Dharma as well as in the Sutras (Kyo), Kangwŏn students must also work their Kyo Teacher to resolve any misunderstanding that may appear in their understanding of the doctrine. 

Likewise, meditation practice is done in the meditation hall as well as the work in the fields and the temple, all in conjunction with face-to-face meetings with their Sŏn Teacher (K. Sŏnwŏn).

One is not to be perceived as superior to the other; they are merely similar paths leading to the same aspiration of discovering the great "I" (Daea) that is earned through awakening to liberate the small "I" (Soa) outside of our thinking life. 

Some in Korea practice Kānhuà Chán, others keep a single Huàtóu, while some fo! llow the scholarly path of Sutra or Huáyán study, while those with a bent towards service lean towards the Pure Land practices of engaged community practice. Why should we place any of these above the other? I don't know. Therefore we do not do this in our order.   

There is obviously a lot of cross-fertilization going on in Korean Buddhism, which has been guided by the brilliance and insight of Sŏn Master Jinul who founded the Jogye Order over nine hundred years ago. The diversity of Korean practice transcends many other forms of Stress Reduction Practice by allowing Pure Land, Sutra Study, Huáyán Study, and Zen to co-exist in each and every temple.

Diversity lies at the heart and soul of the Five Mountain Zen Order, and we aspire to follow in the path of those great innovators who have gone before us. As my teacher always said, "soft is always better, as water wears away gra! nite eve n though it is the most yielding substance in the universe." It does not mean there is no commitment to a path or direction; it simply means that we do not have to all try to wake up in the same way.

We will get shit from the puritans out there, as we have continued to all along. However, I have practiced long enough to realize that I do not have to pay attention to the flies that buzz about sometimes during practice. They too can be great teachers of how not to act in the world.  Seung Sahn often quoted Bojo Jinul, "Your evil tongue will lead you to ruin, keep the stopper in the bottle." If you think about it, the attainment of nirvana rests on the acceptance that there is life after death, in fact, many lives.  Also implied in this, is the understanding that when one dies, they do not automatically attain nirvana.  There are no guarantees.  In fact, nirvana is extremely difficult to attain—it takes many rebirths.  Using the Buddha's own example, as a Bodhisattva he went through many lives before he won nirvana. With the attainment of nirvana, only then comes the end of rebirth—not before.

So how do the rebirth deniers, who insist they are Buddhists, handle this inconvenient truth?  Not very well.  They generally choose either to ignore nirvana or just dumb it down to some incredible weird shit like this:

"Wisdom is to see that there is nothing to search for.  If you live with a difficult person, that's nirvana.  Perfect.  If you're miserable, that's it" (Joko Beck). 

Let's be very clear about nirvana.  It is not about living with a difficult person.  It is much more.  And given the fact (and it is a fact) that most people, if there were such a thing as a spiritual IQ test, would test moron or below.  Even Einstein would find nirvana difficult to conceive of, let alone attain like the Buddha.

Without rebirth—a huge learning curve—no nirvana.  One has to acquire merit to such a degree that the attainment of nirvana becomes feasible.  And this takes many, many rebirths.  Not just this life will do.

A Buddhist who is a rebirth denier has, essentially, said death, not nirvana, is the great emancipation.  For one thing, it is real easy to do.  Just wait and it will come.  Yep, no need to strive for that difficult nirvana.  Death takes care of everything.  Incidentally, this is where secular Buddhism is coming from, the new Buddhist heresy.

What Zen practice is... so simple...

I've been reading Zen books since my college days, forty-four years. I go hot and cold with Zen. Never have heated up enough to study it formally. Never have cooled off enough to lose interest in it entirely.

When an author throws too much Buddhism into the mix of Zen + Buddhism, I get turned off. I like my Zen to be as non-religious as possible. 

Which explains why Charlotte Joko Beck's "Nothing Special" appeals to me so much. I learned about the book from an interesting blog post by David Chapman with the same name. 

I took the title of this page from Charlotte Joko Beck's wonderful book Nothing Special. Writing from a Zen perspective, she suggests that letting go of spiritual fantasies is a prerequisite to effective Stress Reduction practice.

"Nothing is really solved until we understand that there is no solution. We're falling, and there's no answer to that. We can't control it. We're spending our life trying to stop the falling; yet it never stops. There is no solution, no wonderful person who can make it stop. No success, no dream, no anything can make it stop. Our body is just going down."

Joko Beck taught in the Sanbo Kyodan (Harada-Yasutani) lineage of Zen. I've been sharply critical of Sanbo Kyodan elsewhere, for its fetishizing and mythologizing kensho, for its claim that enlightenment consists of discovering your True Self, and for a lot of half-witted talk about God.

At the same time, there is much in Sanbo Kyodan I admire and agree with: its emphasis on non-monastic practice, on everyday life as the path, and on extensive formless meditation; and for dropping many aspects of traditional Japanese Buddhism that no longer function.

l'm about a third of the way through Beck's book. Here's some quotes I've come across so far where she describes what Zen practice is all about. These thoughts apply to any sort of spiritual practice, in my opinion.

(Spoiler alert: it's just living life.)

When we discover Zen practice, we may hold out a hope that it is going to solve our problems and make our life perfect. But Zen practice simply returns us to life as it is. Being our lives more and more is what Zen practice is about. 

Our lives are simply what they are, and Zen helps us to recognize that fact. The thought "If I do this practice patiently enough, everything will be different" is simply another belief system, another version of the promise that is never kept.

...There's a practice of maintaining awareness; in that sense, Zen practice exists. But so long as we're alive, there's the question of awareness. We can't avoid it. In that sense, there's no way to avoid practice, or even to do it. It's just being alive.

Though there are certain formal activities that assist us in waking up (which we can call Zen practice if we want), real "Zen practice" is just being here right now and not adding anything to this.

...In a sense, Zen is a religious practice. Religion really means to rejoin that which seems to be separate. Zen practice helps us to do that. But it's not a religion in the sense that there's something outside of ourselves that's going to take care of us.

...In the end there is no practice except what we're doing each second.

...Practice is not about having experiences, not about having giant realizations, not about getting somewhere or becoming something. We are perfect as we are. By "perfect" I mean simply that this is it. Practice is simply maintaining awareness -- of our activities and also of our thoughts that separate us from our activities.

As we hammer nails or sit, we simply hammer nails or sit. Since our senses are open, we hear and feel other things as well: sounds, smells, and so on. When thoughts arise, we notice them, and return to our direct experience.

Awareness is our true self; it's what we are. So we don't have to try to develop awareness; we simply need to notice how we block awareness, with our thoughts, our fantasies, our opinions, and our judgments. We're either in awareness, which is our natural state, or we're doing something else.

The mark of mature students is that most of the time, they don't do something else. They're just here, living their life. Nothing special.

...Good practice is simply doing what we're doing and noticing when we drift off. 

...Focusing on something called "Zen practice" is not necessary. If from morning to night we just took care of one thing after another, thoroughly and completely and without accompanying thoughts, such as "I'm a good person for doing this" or "Isn't it wonderful that I can take care of everything?," then that would be sufficient.
