How To Use Meditation Gongs In Your Meditation Practice

Meditation gongs or singing bowls are an excellent tool to use in your meditation practice, as their music provides an excellent point of focus. Using gongs or singing bowls for meditation is a simple, easy process.

First, find a calm, comfortable environment where you can be alone for as long as you plan on meditating. Make sure that you are seated comfortably in a chair or if you choose, place soft pillows on the floor and sit on them with your legs crossed. If you are in a chair, it is best for your feet to be shoulder-width apart and flat on the floor. To create an ambience that suits you, you may choose to light candles or burn incense.

Take deep, rhythmic breaths. Relaxed breathing is essential to creating a relaxed, focused state of mind when you are meditation. Before playing your gong, you can try meditating for compassion. To do this, imagine light and love filling you and your immediate surroundings, including your singing bowl if you have one, with love and light. When you have imagined your immediate surroundings filled with love, visualize this love overflowing out to the rest of the world and all its inhabitants.

After you have attained the proper state of mind, whether through the compassion meditation or simply through deep breathing by itself, you can simply strike the gong or play your singing bowl and single-mindedly use the resonating sounds as a point of focus. Anytime your mind wanders off the sound, gently bring your attention and awareness back. You can also sing along with your bowl to make it a more fun and interesting practice.

If you would rather not playing your meditate gong all throughout your meditation session, you can simply play it once at the beginning of your session and once at the end to formally mark and ritualize your meditation time. When you are ready to stop the meditation, calmly and quietly stop playing yo! ur bowl and continue with the rest of your day.

Try your best to maintain your sense of inner peace and centeredness even when you are not actively meditating. For best results, dedicate time daily to meditating with your gong as this will train your mind to stay centered, as well as providing a soothing effect on your mind and body through the sounds produced when you learn how to use meditation gongs.

Not having such powers, I have to read the Buddhist scriptures for clues to his attitude. There I find the Buddha, at times, facing people who say "I heard you said such-and-such," and when that information is incorrect I see him putting them straight, in no uncertain terms. But there's also a passage in the Digha Nikaya where the Buddha explicitly talks about being misquoted. (Thanks to Arjuna Ranatunga for reminding me of this sutta).

There the Buddha runs through various scenarios where one might hear that the Buddha is reported to have said something or other. What's our response meant to be?

"Without approval and without scorn, but carefully studying the sentences word by word, one should trace them in the Discourses and verify them by the Discipline. If they are neither traceable in the Discourses nor verifiable by the Discipline, one must conclude thus: 'Certainly, this is not the Blessed One's utterance; this has been misunderstood by that bhikkhu — or by that community, or by those elders, or by that elder.' In that way, bhikkhus, you should reject it." (Emphasis added.)

That's what the Fake Buddha Quotes blog is about, although generally I try to find where non-Buddhist quotes have originated and I also post genuine Buddha quotes — or at least things that the Buddha's canonically said to have said. Being human, I sometimes fall into scorn. I'm working on it, though.

But there you have it above. We're supposed to think about whether Buddha quotes are genuine. And we're supposed to "reject" them if they're not. (I presume that means reject them as genuine, rather than reject their message. Sometimes Fake Buddha Quotes contain inspiring and true messages — it just so happens that the Buddha didn't say them.)

But there's another sutta that Arjuna reminded me of, which comes not from the Buddha but from his disciple, Uttara. That sutta contains this oft-quoted saying:

"…whatever is well said is all a saying of the Blessed One, the Worthy One, the Rightly Self-awakened One."

This would seem to suggest that if the Buddha's quoted as having said something, then as long as the quote is "well-said" we should accept it as his word. This is a rather odd idea, on the face of it. It's hard to imagine someone as ethical as the Buddha being prepared to take the credit for others' bon mots. It also contradicts what we've just read. Or it seems to.

Take a look at the context of the sutta, though. Uttara is in a conversation with Sakka, the king of the devas (or gods). As an aside, what does this mean? I tend to assume that such conversations are the recordings of inner dialog. In this case Uttara would have been musing on the nature of authenticity. He's just given a teaching, and a note (perhaps of doubt) creeps into his mind: "Whose teaching is this, mine or the Buddha's?" And an answer comes to him: It's basically the Buddha's teaching; I just go to the grain pile and carry away basketfuls of Dhamma as I need them. I'd suggest reading the following passage in that light.

"But is this Ven. Uttara's own extemporaneous invention, or is it the saying of the Blessed One, the Worthy One, the Rightly Self-awakened One?"

"Very well, then, deva-king, I will give you an analogy, for there are cases where it's through an analogy that observant people can understand the meaning of what is being said. Suppose that not far from a village or town there was a great pile of grain, from which a great crowd of people were carrying away grain on their bodies, on their heads, in their laps, or in their cupped hands. If someone were to approach that great crowd of people and ask them, 'From where are you carrying away grain?' answering in what way would that great crowd of people answer so as to be answering rightly?"

"Venerable sir, they would answer, 'We are carrying it from that great pile of grain,' so as to be answering rightly."

"In the same way, deva-king, whatever is well said is all a saying of the Blessed One, the Worthy One, the Rightly Self-awakened One. Adopting it again & again from there do we & others speak."

Or maybe you believe in gods.

But it's obvious from the context that what is "well said" refers to that which is taken from the grain pile of the Buddha's teaching. It seems likely that Uttara was actually saying "whatever I have said that is well said is the word of the Buddha." This is not unlike a common line that is found in book acknowledgements, along the lines, "Whatever is of value here comes from my teachers; the errors are all my own." Uttara was not saying that if Voltaire or Douglas Adams or Virginia Wolfe happens to say something neat it can be co-opted as Buddha-vacana — the utterance of the Buddha. So ultimately Uttara's utterance doesn't contradict the Buddha's teaching that we should scrutinize supposed Buddha quotes and reject those that aren't genuine.

Meditation reduces the severity and duration of acute respiratory infections

Training in mindfulness meditation or exercise is linked to a decrease in the severity and duration of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) in adults, according to a study published in the July/August issue of the Annals of Family Medicine.

To assess the preventive effects of meditation or exercise on incidence, duration, and severity of ARI illness, Bruce Barrett, M.D., Ph.D., of the University of Wisconsin in Madison, and associates conducted a randomized trial involving 149 adults (82 percent female; 94 percent white; mean age, 59.3 years). Participants underwent eight weeks of training in mindfulness meditation (51 participants) or moderate-intensity sustained exercise (47 participants), or were part of an observational control (51 participants).

The researchers identified 27 ARI episodes and 257 days of ARI illness in the meditation group, 26 episodes and 241 illness days in the exercise group, and 40 episodes and 453 days in the control group. Data showed that the mean global severity was 144, 248, and 358 for meditation, exercise, and control, respectively, with severity significantly lower for meditation versus control. There was a trend toward lower severity in the exercise versus control group and for lower duration in the exercise and meditation groups versus control. There were significantly fewer ARI-related days of work missed for the exercise and meditation groups versus the control group (32, 16, and 67, respectively).

"If these results are confirmed in future studies, there will be important implications for public and private health-related policy and practice, as well as for scientific research regarding mechanisms of health maintenance and disease prevention," the authors write.

The study was funded in part by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

Morality has nothing to do with scientific truth

Einstein revealed some amazing truths about the cosmos through his theory of relativity and other research. Einstein also spent time with six girlfriends while he was married. 

Is there any connection between these two facts? Should we question the validity of the theory of relativity because Einstein engaged in behavior that would seem morally questionable to many people? 

No, of course not. 

Universal scientific truths have no connection with individual, or even societal, moral norms. The cosmos doesn't care what we do with our bodies and minds. Laws of nature aren't dependent on human thou shalt's and thou shalt not's.

So why do religions put so much emphasis on adhering to moral codes and commandments? (Which markedly differ from each other, but every religion has them.) 

Imagine that Jesus had a "significant other," which, of course, could have been the case -- given that so much of Jesus' life is shrouded in myth and mystery. He could have been gay, but I'll assume his bed partner was a woman.

Imagine further that a previously unknown gospel is discovered in a newly unearthed middle eastern cave. Scholars affirm it is as historically valid as Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Roughly translated, the gospel contains this passage:

While Jesus loved his wife, he also enjoyed hot sex with six girlfriends.

Would this throw Christian theology into a tailspin? Would the Christian faithful question whether Jesus truly was the son of God who died on the cross to atone for mankind's sins if, prior to his atonement, he'd happily fucked six women along with his wife? 

(When climaxing, I picture Jesus throwing his head back and screaming "Oh my god! Oh my god!")

The truths Einstein discovered are independent of his personal lifestyle choices. They are part and parcel of a universal reality far removed from human notions of morality.

Yes, some philosophers, such as Derek Parfit, assert that moral reasoning is more objective than is commonly believed. This is a controversial position, though, by no means proven in anywhere near the same sense that the theory of relativity has been.

Yet most believers in the validity of a divine reality continue to associate truth-revealing and morality.

Prophets, mystics, gurus, masters, sages, yogis, popes, preachers, and such generally aren't trusted if their personal lives aren't in accord with a particular moral code esteemed by believers in a certain religion, spiritual teaching, or mystical practice.

I used to belong to an India-based organization which taught that god-realization wasn't possible without being a vegetarian, abstaining from alcohol and illicit drugs, and not having sex outside of marriage.

Having briefly been a Catholic in my childhood years, I sometimes thought about the wine-soaked wafer I was given at holy communion. Most Christians certainly would disagree that alcohol consumption is a barrier to knowing God. And many cultures use psychedelics (such as "magic mushrooms") to commune with divinity.

It now seems to me that the reason morality is so intimately connected with spiritual truths, but not scientific ones, is this: those supposed spiritual truths are lies. 

People may subjectively believe in them. However, they have no objective reality. Light and gravity really do behave in accord with the theory of relativity. There is no similar demonstrable evidence to support the assertions of believers in supernatural laws of nature.

Thus religions are left with subjective moral injunctions rather than objective truths. People cling to these commandments for many reasons, some of which may make sense. But only to us humans.

The cosmos rolls on, oblivious to our notions of right and wrong, good and bad. Science understands this; religions don't.

Believe your truth of freedom, of abundance, of worthiness, and of being able to accomplish anything you set your mind to. Fill your mind with your truth and the light of truth will dispel the darkness of falsehood bringing you to a brighter place in your life.

4) Use visualization

Our brain communicates in pictures. So the more you use your imagination to visualize yourself being bold and confident, the more you'll develop confidence a! s a habi t and lifestyle. Take control of your thoughts by visualizing yourself in the place you desire to be - seeing the good that you desire happening to you, beginning to approve of yourself and not waiting for or craving after the approval of others.

5) Use affirmations

Affirmations are very powerful tools to reprogram the mind when used correctly. Repetition of your affirmations of self-confidence begins the mindset reprogramming process and activates the law of growth to take place to produce the fruit of self-confidence.

Quitting Smoking Packs on More Pounds Than Thought

Quitting smoking may be associated with gaining more weight than previously thought, according to a new study. Still, kicking the habit is a healthy trade-off, researchers said.

In the year after quitting, people gained an average of 8 to 11 pounds, the study found. This amount is higher than what pamphlets on quitting smoking suggest (typically, around 6 pounds), and is also higher than the weight gain most women report they would tolerate (5 pounds), according to the study, published online today (July 10) in the British Medical Journal.

But the health consequences of such weight gain do not undermine the health benefits associated with quitting smoking, according to an editorial accompanying the study in the journal.

The study researchers, led by Dr. Henri-Jean Aubin, of the University of Paris-South, reviewed 62 studies of people who quit smoking, including those involving people who quit by using an aid, such as a nicotine patch, as well as those of people who quit unaided.

The researchers found 37 percent of participants gained less than 11 pounds over the year, 34 percent gained between 11 and 22 pounds and 13 percent gained more than 22 pounds. However, 16 percent of participants lost weight. 

For most people, the weight gain was concentrated during the first three months. For example, people who did not use any quitting aid gained an average of 6 pounds within the first few months, the study showed.

Researchers said that the findings could help doctors give patients a more realistic picture of how much weight they may gain when they quit.

In editorial accompanying the article, researchers wrote that the weight gain is worth the associated health gains of quitting smoking. The weight gain is typically modest, and the weight often is lost in the next few years after quitting, according to authors Dr. Esteve Fernández, of the University of Barcelona, and Simon Chapman, of the University of Sydney.

"Studies indicate that modest weight gain does not increase the risk of death; smoking does," they wrote.

Pass it on: Quitting smoking may bring an 8 to 11 pound weight increase, but the health benefits outweigh this consequence.

Tough break for paraplegics and quadriplegics

Is sitting in a chair doing zazen?  According to some Soto Zen experts it isn't.  If you are a paraplegic or quadriplegic in a wheelchair, tough break.  You can never do zazen.  But don't be sad.  Ask this question:  "Did the Buddha mention anything about zazen, or mention that it only counts when a person sits in a full or half-lotus?"  The answer is no.  

Truth be told, the Buddha never mentioned anything about zazen.  Sure, he mentioned dhyâna (P., jhâna), but it was never coupled with nishad/nisîdati (to sit, to dwell) which is rendered in Chinese, 坐.  Zazen is a relatively new term in the long history of Buddhism the importance of which is overstated by Soto Zennists.  According to Tang Dynasty Zen master Tsung-mi, rather than zazen, it is the one-practice samadhi that is transmitted down from Bodhidharma (Peter N. Gregory, editor, Traditions of Meditation in Chinese Buddhism, 120).  Soto Zen has it all wrong.  Zazen was not transmitted.

Soto Zen's notion of zazen (tso-ch'an), with its strict emphasis on posture, fails to comport with the Sixth Patriarch's Platform Sutra, chapter 19.  For one thing, 'sitting' (坐) according the Sixth Patriarch, "means without any obstruction anywhere, outwardly and under all circumstance, not to activate thoughts" (trans. Yampolsky).

Soto Zen is a really a form of Buddhism for spiritually challenged beginners who have little or no grasp of the spiritual side of Buddhism; who are obsessed with the belief that sitting on a zafu turns one into a Buddha (which it doesn't).

Abstract Art and I

I have always loved bright colors and movement, like dancing its healing, relaxing fulfilling and challenging as well. The bottom line is the feeling and message that I want to convey through the medium. When I paint, every attempt is to capture the feel of warmth, passion, joy and bliss in none objective or figurative composition. I enjoy experimentation of different media and subjects.

My subject varies based on my emotion and statement but my love for colors is constant. In spite of this, viewers see different forms or figures in my abstract expressions. The good thing about these expressions is the freedom of the viewers to see and appreciate the forms in their mind's eyes, like face painting in the eye of the viewer. Its also important to mention that "Uli" which is my traditional art style has played a major role in my age long career. The symbols and forms of this art style are reflected in my cubism, abstract images, abstract relief sculpture, seascape, drawing, pastels and watercolor painting.

People see different forms or images in abstract art, the depth of what you actually see when you look at the paintings is partly based on individual exposure and understanding of art forms, color, shapes, line and texture; which are the physical elements that combine to make up the artworks.

A selection of different dark hues, shapes and forms may give various impressions to different minds; light, airy images as mystical; balanced, temperate forms as peaceful. Uli organic forms and shape are symbolical such as colors and forms have meaning in and of themselves. It is a simple truth that you can't give what you don't have. I am a believer and my work time is also a meditation time, which can go either way depending on the spiritual consciousness of the creative mind.

To me, my work section is an intimate moment between I, canvas and colors. At this creative moment there is a spiritual impartation from the artist to the Art. Hence the emotional reaction to these elements ev! en if th ey create no recognizable object for us to hang onto.

I enjoy the inclusion and deletion of space. The handling of space or theillusion of space is another powerful element in the artist's mind. If you are drawn into a yard of three-dimensional space stretching beyond the framework of the painting to sculpture, you are not alone. The impression of depth, perspective, airiness, solidity, textures and other spatial relations are created and controlled to achieve a desired goal. The overall composition or design of my painting or sculpture is created to guide the viewer's eyes to understanding and appreciation of the images.

I must admit, most of my figurative compositions is a celebration of womanhood, which I am very proud to be part of for they are the seats of wisdom and knowledge.

I pride in the feeling and reactions of my clients and viewers to my creations. I feel blessed in many ways than words can express. The challenge sometimes is getting the composition right, or balancing the elements of color, lines and shapes while maintaining a dynamic tension and massage beneath.

Energy is the life force that is present in all good art. This is not something that is easily defined. The life force of every work I do is the same, but different energy and different statements. It is this peculiar energy that makes my works speak to you, and makes them unique, original and identifiable to me. This energy is created out of experience and self-awareness, materials and tools, but the end is more than the means in the same sense that a musical composition is so much more than a collection of notes.

You are welcome into my world of abstract wall art or modern art, relax and let your eye leisurely wander over the collection of verities of art forms and styles. Let your heart and mind react to my colors, shapes, figures and textures. Lesbian couple to take vows in Taiwan’s first public Stress Reduction same-sex union

The decision by a Stress Reduction master to host the event will help push awareness about sexual inequalities further into the public realm, the bride said.

Two devout Stress Reduction women are to hold the nation's first gay Stress Reduction wedding next month as part of an effort to push for the legalization of same-sex marriages in Taiwan.

"We are not only doing it for ourselves, but also for other gays and lesbians," Fish Huang said in a telephone interview.

The 30-year-old social worker at a non-governmental organization said that marriage never crossed her mind until she saw a movie last year.

The film portrayed two lesbians whose ill-fated relationship concluded after one died and the other was left heartbroken over the denial of spousal benefits.

"It's so sad," Huang said, who plans to wed her partner of seven years on Aug. 11 at a Stress Reduction altar in Taoyuan County.

Both brides are planning to wear white wedding gowns and listen to lectures given by Stress Reduction masters about marriage, accompanied by a series of chantings and blessings from monks and nuns.

Although homosexual marriages are not legally recognized in Taiwan, Huang insisted on tying the knot because she wants to make her relationship complete and raise awareness about the difficulties faced by sexual minorities.

Alternative sexual orientation and marriage have yet to be widely accepted by the general public, despite years of effort by activists to secure equality in Taiwan.

The first public gay marriage in Taiwan took place in 1996 between a local writer and his foreign partner. The event drew widespread media attention and inspired many gays to follow their footsteps.

Huang's wedding, however, will be the first with a Stress Reduction theme.

While planning for her wedding, Huang found out, to her surprise, that some of her Stress Reduction friends were hesitant about attending the ceremony.

"They are not sure if it would break their vows and were very anxious," Huang said.

She messaged a Stress Reduction master on Facebook, asking her if she could find grounds in Buddhism for condemning the practice of homosexuality.

To Huang's surprise, the master quickly replied that Buddhism shows no bias toward homosexuality. In a demonstration of support, the master said she was willing to host the ceremony for the couple.

"It is meaningful to us that our wedding can give hope to other homosexuals and help heterosexuals understand how Buddhism views sexuality," Huang said.

The Stress Reduction master Shih Chao-hwei (釋昭慧), who is also a professor at Hsuan Chuang University, said Stress Reduction teachings do not prohibit homosexual behavior.

Compared with Western religions, Buddhism on the whole is more tolerant toward homosexuality because there is no concrete rule banning the practice in Stress Reduction scriptures, Shih said.

"It's difficult enough to maintain a relationship … how could you be so stingy as to begrudge a couple for wanting to get married, regardless of their sexual orientation," she said in a telephone interview.

However, Shih recognized there is disagreement on the issue both inside and outside Stress Reduction circles.

Shih noted that Huang and her partner could face criticism.

"The first step is always the hardest," Shih said.
