Autoerotic Deaths Less Common Than Thought

The number of yearly deaths in the U.S. from people practicing autoeroticism, in which the brain's oxygen supply is deliberately lowered to achieve heightened sexual pleasure, is a lot lower than previously thought, according to a new study.

Rather than the oft-cited estimate of 500 to 1,000 deaths per year, the new results suggest that the true number of yearly autoerotic deaths in the U.S is less than 160.

People who engage in autoeroticism often use asphyxiation methods such as hanging, a plastic bag or chemical substances, and these can lead to accidental death.

The book that is the source of the commonly given estimate — "Autoerotic Fatalities" (Lexington Books, 1983) — used unpublished data from England and Canada, said study researcher Dr. Anny Sauvageau, chief medical examiner in Alberta, Canada.

"We just kept quoting numbers from this book, but it's the scientific community's responsibility to check the data that we quote," said study researcher Dr. Anny Sauvageau, chief medical examiner in Alberta, Canada.

Getting more accurate estimates on these deaths, and a better understanding of the conditions under which they take place, could help prevent them, Sauvageau said.

The study was published in the June issue of the American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology.

Sexual stimulation comes from lack of oxygen

In her study, Sauvageau looked at autoerotic deaths in Alberta between 1985 and 2009, and found 38 cases. That means the yearly rate of such deaths likely ranges between 0.2 and 0.5 cases per million people, she said. 

Although the number of autoerotic deaths in the U.S. still hasn't been established, studies suggest that the U.S. would probably have a similar rate, Sauvageau said.

With a U.S. population of about 313 million people, the nation's yearly number of autoerotic deaths is likely between 62 and 156, according to the study.

Sauvageau also looked at information about the deaths for clues to what might put people at greater risk. The victims were all men and most were single. The most common method was hanging, and most victims were found in basements.

Additionally, she found that most victims were not under the influence of alcohol or drugs when the accidental death occurred.

Most of the deaths occurred during the summer months. Sauvageau said that may be because people tend to be more festive during the summer, spending more time with friends and generally enjoying life more, which could lead them to feeling friskier than they do during winter months.

Dr. Douglas Mossman, a forensic psychiatrist at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, who was not a part of the research, cautioned that the new numbers could be a chance finding, and that more studies are needed.

Why people engage in such a dangerous practice

Sauvageau said that the longer a person practices autoeroticism, the more comfortable they may become with the dangerous practice.

"They think they can continue to hang without passing out, and that it's not dangerous," she said.

And for people who think it's safer to engage in autoeroticismwith a partner, Sauvageau said: "It may not be as dangerous, but it's still dangerous. Accidents can happen."

There are three main ways in which people are sexually stimulated: by touching their genitals; by creating an environment of fear and pain, such as in sadomasochism; or by cutting the supply of oxygen to the brain, Sauvageau said.

"There's never been a clear explanation as to why the lack of oxygen creates sexual pleasure," she said.  "People have a huge variety of fantasies that turn them on," Mossman said. "It could be that what's appealing is a fantasy of being choked or suffocating."

Although people may be aware that it's dangerous, the nature of human thinking means that people don't always make rational decisions, Mossman explained.

"The danger isn't foremost in people's minds when they're doing something dangerous, including this activity," he said.

Meditation guided mantras are a great way to work on your meditation sessions. When you decide to practice mantra meditation, the first key to success obviously lies within the mantra you select. When deciding on a mantra, you should do more than just read it from a piece of paper or your computer screen. Say it out loud. If it is the right mantra, it should resonate with you. Also choose a mantra you intend to stick to, as choosing a different mantra can reset your meditative progress. If you need help in identifying a good mantra for yourself, Google 'mantras' and you'll find a host of ideas.

If you are already a meditation practitioner, you will likely have completed this task already. For instance, a famous Japanese mantra is "Nam, Meohho Renge Kio." Before you begin your meditation practice, you should define an area in your home for meditating. This space should be somewhat private to prevent disturbances, and it should also be easily accessible to you. Once you have chosen your meditation space, you can decide what position to meditate from. You may need to try a few different positions to find out which will work best for you, just as you did when selecting your mantra.

You may want to select a symbolic meditation guide. This can be something arbitrary that you visualize while meditating, or it can be a symbol of your mantra. Like your mantra, this symbol should remain the same throughout your meditation practice. As you prepare to begin your meditation schedule, you will want to work on breathing exercises geared specifically toward your goals. For mantra meditation, it is oftentimes helpful to learn to breathe primarily through your left nostril.

Whooping Cough Vaccine May Wane in Pre-Teens

Changes to the vaccination schedule for whooping cough may be needed to better protect pre-adolescents from the infection during outbreaks, researchers say.

During the 2010 whooping cough outbreak in California, there was a spike in cases among children ages 7 to 10, the majority of whom had been fully vaccinated against the disease, a new study finds.

This suggests that immunity from children's last scheduled whooping cough shot, administered between ages 4 and 6, may wane before kids typically receive a booster shot, at age 11 or 12, the researchers said.

The study adds to a growing body of research showing whooping cough vaccine protection in children fades after three to six years.

Doctors should consider administering the last whooping cough shot in children at an age later than 4 to 6, or administering the booster shot earlier than age 11 or 12, the researchers said.

However, additional studies are needed to determine the optimal timing of whooping cough vaccines to best protect children and adolescents over their childhood, the researchers say.

The California outbreak offered additional lessons regarding ways to prevent whooping cough disease spread, the researchers said.

During the outbreak, more than 9,000 cases of whooping cough, also known as pertussis, were reported. The majority occurred in infants younger than 2 months, a group that is not vaccinated against the disease. (Infants receive a series of vaccinations against pertussis, diphtheria and tetanus at ages 2, 4 and 6 months.) Ten infants died from the condition.

While there seemed to be a disproportionate number of cases among 7-  to 10-year-olds, there were fewer cases among 11- to 14-year-olds, suggesting the whooping cough booster shot given at age 11 or 12 is effective, the researchers said.

One strategy to prevent whooping cough in young infants is to vaccinate the adults in frequent contact with them, a practice known as "cocooning." However, cocooning is resource-intensive, and studies on its effectiveness are lacking, the researchers said.

Vaccinating pregnant women is another possible way to prevent whooping cough in infants, a practice that was recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last year.

Researchers are also evaluating the effectiveness of vaccinating children against whooping cough at birth. However, infants would still be vulnerable until their bodies properly responded to the vaccine, the researchers said.

Pertussis is very infectious, and high levels of immunity in the population will be needed to prevent disease spread in the country. But because the vaccine does not protect people for life, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to achieve this, the researchers said.

"In the absence of better vaccines, it is imperative that strategies to protect young infants directly, such as maternal vaccination, be evaluated for effectiveness," the researchers say.

The study is published today (July 19) in the Journal of Pediatrics.

3. Try to experiment. Although soft and relaxing music is always advisable, try to play other types of music. Who knows? You might find better concentration of you play something that you truly en! joy.

4. Simple and soothing music is sure to focus your attention. If you don't have the luxury of time to experiment on types of music to be played during meditation, then try surefire hits, which are simple and soothing music. Some of these may include classical sounds, sounds from the nature such as clapping of thunder, sounds of big waves, sounds of insects, and the wind. Other alternative options may also include simple instruments including tibetan singing bowl, flute, sitar, and tamboura which are known to have meditative inducing qualities.

When choosing meditation music, it is very important to keep in mind that the type you should play must induce you to deep concentration and not into deep sleep. If you are the type who practices mediation in just one place, then it is best if you play the same meditation music all over again. But if you are the type who changes places, then it is best to bring along several types of medication music to help you adjust to the place.

You can download the meditation music that you like from various meditation sites in the Internet and burn in a CD. But if you burn have a portable MP3 player, it is best to upload the music there so you can listen to it anytime you want to practice meditation.

In order to transcend; "rise above" you have to see how the ego created all of your negative belief patterns. It does this in order to protect you when you are young and dependent on your parents for all survival needs.

If you observe yourself doing, feeling, thinking or saying something undesirable, remember that that is just a product of your programming. If you are willing to observe your own programming, which was basically downloaded before age five, than you can see how the ego created t! he assoc iation, thought pattern, and feelings as a way to protect you.

And although the ego usually gets a bad rap; it is the one most beautiful loving traits of the human condition because without it we would not survive.

We all do what we do, say what we say, feel what we feel and eat how we eat FOR A REASON! It makes perfect logical sense. So if there is feeling you no longer want to experience or if you want to create a different experience in your life simply start with these four little words: Oh isn't that interesting!

By observing it and getting to know it you can move into it while surrendering all resistance of feeling and allow what is there to rise to the surface and move through.

All feelings surrounding any situation are very real; although they may NOT be factual to the current-day situation; there is something very real, which is being triggered by an association.

Feelings are very real and extremely valid and the sooner you validate and give thanks to the ego for creating the negative thought pattern (to survive the situation at the time) the sooner you can mourn the passing of the survival mechanisms you no longer need to carry you forward into adulthood.

By releasing the emotional charge attached to the thought pattern you can transcend and raise above dysfunctional behavior that is no longer working for you!

This is the mantra that you must understand and believe in order to truly love yourself: I love myself because I am none of not my feelings; feelings change; I am not my actions because my actions change, I am not my body because my body changes; I am not even my thoughts because I can change those also. All I AM is the witness; I am consciousness itself - and the energy of consciousness is neutral; it just is.

At the end of the day, at the end of the journey it is all about self-love.

What is life all about? I think the Buddha sums it up quite nicely with this passage:

"This my body is material, made up form the four great elements, born of mother and father, fed on rice and gruel, impermanent, liable to be injured and abraded, broken and destroyed, and this is my consciousness which is bound to it and dependent on it" (D. i. 76).

Sound depressing? Well, yes it is depressing if we have lived into our seventies or eighties.  In these last years, the hard reality of death is inescapable.  When death comes it is not altogether pleasant, or like in a 1940s Hollywood movie.  Making matters worse, even after death we are still, as consciousness (vijñâna), bound to a body being aware of conditionality which is still the world of samsara.  Unlike Vakkali in the Vakkali Sutta (SN 22.87), our consciousness is not unestablished (appatitthita) which means we have not attained final nirvana (cp. S. iii. 124) and most likely never will.  

Even if we believe in the materialist's endless dirt nap, it will be that of consciousness established on a condition or samskâra which will be painful.  In blunt terms, pain is only for the participant who is consciousness; who is interfacing with a particular condition.  And if we believe in the teaching of the Buddha, all conditions no matter how complex or simple, are painful.  

The only means of escape is for consciousness to unfix (appatitthita) itself from the conditioned material body by becoming conscious of what is unconditioned (asamskâra).  In more precise terms, to attain the nirvana that Vakkali attained the fluctuations of consciousness must cease in such a way that consciousness rests in signlessness, boundlessness, and complete luminosity (cp. D. i. 223).  Needless to say, this is quite a difficult task to undertake and to achieve given that all we know as consciousness is degrees of conditionality which even includes death (death can never achieve the unconditionedness of nirvana).

Irritating putdowns of pseudo-spiritual wannabes

Even when I was a religious true believer, Eastern mysticism variety, I tried to avoid being irritatingly sanctimonious. People who consider themselves holier-than-thou are difficult to be around. And I necessarily associated with quite a few people who didn't believe in what I did.

Such as my first wife, who early on deconverted from the India-based Radha Soami Satsang Beas (RSSB) faith that I held on to for about thirty-five years. And my second wife, who always has been an "infidel" from the standpoint of RSSB.

When I gave talks at RSSB meetings, I often used her as an example, saying that it makes no sense for any devotee of a particular spiritual belief system to view themselves as being superior to others.  After all, isn't spirituality supposed to have something to do with humility, love, compassion, acceptance?

Having run this churchless blog for almost eight years, I'm familiar with the putdowns of pseudo-spiritual wannabes -- because so many of those putdowns are directed at me in comments and emails. Here's some of the techniques I find most irritatingly amusing, because they are so nonsensical.

After I share those, I'll end with a suggestion about how to really put me, or another religious skeptic, down. 

"Brian, you haven't had [such and such] experience. You're a spiritual loser." 

This is an exceedingly lame argument.

No, I haven't experienced the blazing love of Jesus. No, I haven't had a peyote-fueled vision of the divine. No, I haven't felt the cosmic compassion of Buddha by repeating Namu Amida Butsu. No, I haven't astral traveled through inner regions of reality.

Who has experienced everything that religions, spiritual faiths, and mystical practices say is possible to experience?

And who can prove that any of these experiences are more than subjectively personal? I've had countless experiences that nobody else has. In fact, all of my experiences are unique to me, because no one can ever know someone else's conscious experience.

So this putdown is so weak as to be meaningless.

"Brian, you would have had [such and such] experience if you'd stuck with [such and such] longer. You're a quitter."

This is how I usually respond to this attempted putdown: Have you ever changed your mind, done something different, gone in a different direction, discarded one thing and picked up another? 

Nobody -- repeat, nobody -- keeps on the same track forever. I can't understand how it is that many religious believers convert to a particular faith, then view any subsequent conversion to another viewpoint as a ghastly sin.

If they'd always felt that way, they would have stuck with what they originally believed. Or their lack of belief. We all learn from our experiences. We all discover what we like and don't like. We evolve in our understanding of what makes life meaningful for us.

Yet even though change is the only constant from birth until death, somehow religious fundamentalists imagine that once a believer in X, always a believer in X. If Y comes to look more true and desirable, the devil must have worked his wily ways.

Ridiculous. Please, come up with a better putdown.

"Brian, you do [such and such] and say [such and such]. You're an immoral egotist." 

So what if I am? And how is it that supposedly you can judge me without being an immoral egotist, but when I criticize somebody or something, I'm all wrong?

Everybody has different standards of right and wrong. We all do what we feel we should. We're all trying to make our way down the road of life in the best way possible. Still, I often disagree with what someone else is doing.

Politics is one of my passions. Every day I read the news and think, "Geez, what the Republicans are doing is so obviously wrong." But I realize that to them, us progressives are wrong. I try to avoid making absolutist moral judgments.

Which reminds me of some passages I read today in one of my favorite books, Raymond Smullyan's "The Tao is Silent." He describes four people. Smullyan likes the fourth a lot. The first, not at all.

The fourth says, "Why do I act as I do? To tell you the truth, I have absolutely no idea why. It is simply my nature to act as I act, and that's all I can say." ...The last one delights me utterly!... He is the one who is completely natural, spontaneous, and unself-consciously helpful.

...The first says, "I regard it as my duty and moral obligation to help my fellow man." ...But the first man! Good heavens, what a monstrosity!... People like the first man are so often pompous, vain, ego-assertive, puritanical, inhuman, self-centered, dominating, and unsympathetic. They are the people who act out of "principles." In a way, they are even worse than people who don't help others at all!

l don't know if I'm egotistical. I just do what I feel like doing.

Sure seems like that also is what people who criticize me for being an egotist are doing. Difference is, I don't feel superior to other people when I do what I feel like doing -- which makes me less egotistical! 

Anyway, this gets me to how someone could really put me down for what I'm doing here on the Church of the Churchless: provide some super-good evidence that I'm wrong to be skeptical about god, soul, spirit, supernatural powers, and all that.

Ooh! That would show me!

I'd have to admit that what I've been saying in so many blog posts is wrong, wrong, wrong. I'd have to bow down before the truth: God is real; the soul survives bodily death; spirit is the ultimate reality; some people have supernatural abilities.

Actually, I'd be happy to do that: admit I was wrong. It'd be nice to know that there's more to life, existence, and the cosmos than what appears to be. More is better, for sure. Especially if it really is better. 

Problem is, for the putdown to be effective, you need to bring your best stuff.

Facts, demonstrable evidence, proof. No one ever has been able to do this throughout all of recorded human history, so I doubt anyone is going to submit a blog post comment or send me an email with truly convincing arguments for some sort of divinity.

That's why I'm pretty sure those unconvincing putdowns will continue. Those who don't know, but believe they do, are spiritual wannabes who can't stand people like me who look at them and say, "Oh, really?"

The eye damage that a JetBlue pilot suffered after two green laser beams were reportedly shined into a New York-bound airplane flying at 5,000 feet this week happens because the lens of the eye focuses light onto the retina, and the heat energy is enough to burn the eye, expert say.

When light enters the eye, it is focused by the lens on the retina at the back of the eye, explained Dr. Neil Bressler, an ophthalmologist at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

The damage happens when the focused light is too strong or lasts for too long, and heats the part of the retina that contains pigment, or color.

"That pigment absorbs the light just like dark clothing, and just like dark clothing radiates, it radiates heat," Bressler said.

The heat can burn the eye and permanently damage the retina. If the laser light is brief or weak, it may not produce the same heat or long-lasting damage, but instead could create a small after-image, which is a bright spot that prevents normal vision.

This is similar to what happens when you stare at a bright light for too long — you continue to see a bright spot for a few seconds after looking away, because "it takes the retina time to recover, to be able to see again," Bressler said.

But the thermal damage could also cause a permanent blank spot, he said, which is impossible to treat and would require retina replacement, he said. That type of damage is very rare, however, and Bressler said that he had mainly seen it in people who've been in industrial accidents. 

Light from lasers maintains its energy even over long distances. The extent of the eye damage that occurs depends on the strength of the laser, the distance from the laser and length of exposure.

Last year, lasers above a certain strength were outlawed in the U.S. in an attempt to limit this kind of harm.

In the case of the JetBlue pilot, officials with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Aviation Administration said they are searching for the person who shined the lasers into the plane's cockpit, according to news reports.

The plane landed safely.

7 Surprising Health Effects of Drought

With more than half the U.S. currently in drought, concerns have mounted over the consequences of the arid climate on the country's crop yields. But droughts have far reaching effects beyond the farm, including many effects on human health, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Here are seven potential health concerns that occur with drought:

Bad air

Droughts can reduce air quality and compromise the health of people with certain conditions, according to the CDC. During a drought, dry soils and wildfires increase the amount of airborne particles, such as pollen and smoke.

These particles can irritate the airways and worsen chronic respiratory illnesses, such as asthma, the CDC says. Poor air quality can also increase the risk of respiratory infections, such as bacterial pneumonia.

Valley fever

Drought increases the risk of people catching the fungal infection coccidioidomycosis, or valley fever, the CDC says. The disease is transmitted when spores in the soil become airborne and are inhaled. The condition causes a range of symptoms, including fever, chest pain, coughing, rash, and muscle aches, the CDC says.

The condition is more common among people living in the Southwest than other parts of the U.S., but it is relatively rare — one study reported that 0.04 percent of people in Maricopa County, Ariz., were infected in one year.

Germy hands

In a drought, people may feel the need to reduce hand washing and other hygiene practices to conserve water, the CDC says. This may increase the spread of infectious diseases, such as acute respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses.

"Conservation efforts should not hinder proper sanitation and hygiene," the CDC says. People can install low-flow faucet aerators to reduce water use while still maintaining proper hygiene, the agency says.

Mental health effects

Those whose livelihood is directly tied to the water supply — including farmers, horticulturalists and nursery owners — may suffer adverse mental health effects during a drought, according to the CDC.

"Financial-related stress and worry can cause depression, anxiety, and a host of other mental and behavioral health conditions," the CDC says. Studies have found an increased rate of suicide among people living in farming areas during droughts, the agency says.

Unhealthy eating

Reduced rainfall can limit the growing season for farmers, and further reduce crop yields by creating ideal conditions for insect infestations that damage crops. This can bring increases in food prices, or shortages of certain foods, potentially leading to malnutrition, the CDC says.

In a drought, farmers may also use recycled water to irrigate fields. Although the use of recycled water for agriculture is legal in the United States, if the process is not properly monitored, crops can become contaminated with pathogens such as salmonella and E. coli, the CDC says.

Mosquito-borne diseases

Increases in diseases transmitted by insects, such as West Nile virus, which is spread by mosquitoes, are linked with drought, the CDC says. Drought can shrink bodies of water, and cause water to become stagnant, providing breeding grounds for mosquitoes, the CDC says.

Droughts can also change the behavior of mosquitoes and allow for out-of-the-ordinary meetings between certain types of mosquitoes and birds. This may create outbreaks of diseases such as St. Louis encephalitis, the CDC says.

Recreational injuries

Lower water levels may also mean an increase in injuries for those who hoping to grab some summer fun in lakes. Lower water levels are often difficult to perceive, and people may injury themselves by diving into shallow waters or striking objects while boating, the CDC says.
