The question, then, is how it can be possible for conscious experiences to arise out of a lump of gray matter endowed with nothing but electrochemical properties.

A related problem is how someone's propositional attitudes (e.g. beliefs and desires) cause that individual's neurons to fire and his muscles to contract. These comprise some of the puzzles that have confronted epistemologists and philosophers of mind from at least the time of René Descartes.

Dualism is a set of views about the relationship between mind and matter (or body). It begins with the claim that mental phenomena are, in some respects, non-physical. One of the earliest known formulations of mind-body dualism was expressed in the eastern Sankhya and Yoga schools of Hindu philosophy (c. 650 BCE), which divided the world into purusha (mind/spirit) and prakriti (material substance). Specifically, the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali presents an analytical approach to the nature of the mind.

In Western Philosophy, the earliest discussions of dualist ideas are in the writings of Plato and Aristotle. Each of these maintained, but for different reasons, that humans' "intelligence" (a faculty of the mind or soul) could not be identified with, or explained in terms of, th! eir phys ical body. However, the best-known version of dualism is due to René Descartes (1641), and holds that the mind is a non-extended, non-physical substance, a "res cogitans". Descartes was the first to clearly identify the mind with consciousness and self-awareness, and to distinguish this from the brain, which was the seat of intelligence. He was therefore the first to formulate the mind-body problem in the form in which it still exists today.

It almost goes without saying, but Western Buddhists are not, by and large, students of the Sutras (P., Suttas) hence all the freaking arguments that tend to erupt.  I suspect that most pop Buddhist writers haven't studied but a handful of Sutras.  It is when debates arise over certain key doctrines such as Atman vs. no-self that Sutras become important. But they are also important for understanding meditation and the Five Aggregates (pañca-skandha) and their relationship to our self and why we are not these conditioned aggregates. 

By not being a student of the Sutras, the problem facing the majority of Buddhists is what do the specific terms mean as to their notion.  What is the specific notion of anâtman (lit., not the self) or pratityasamutpada (dependent origination), or dhyâna (meditation), or vijñâna (consciousness)?  What does nirvana mean?  Incidentally, even the best scholars have to make educated guesses when it comes to nirvana—not all agree with each other.  We see this in the book, The Buddhist Nirvana and Its Western Interpreters by Guy Richard Welbon.

Speaking from the vantage point of the Pali Nikayas, it is only when we have entered the stream or current (S., srotas), a kind of super spiritual  baptism, that the study of the Sutras comes into play in a profound way—provided we have studied them!

Better than absolute sovereignty on the earth, better than going to heaven, better than lordship over all the worlds is the reward (phalam) of entering the stream (sotapatti)" (Dhammapada 178).

During this initial baptism, we get our first glimpse of nirvana.  In addition we begin to distinguish our psychophysical body from our true self. We also put away our doubts about the veracity of the Buddha's teachings because we now can see what he is aiming at. As a result, we no longer cling to ritualistic and moralistic practices which really amount to dead ends.

As you travel Burma, you will undoubtedly notice the many striking pagodas that feature in your surroundings - from Yangon to the plains of Bagan. As historical monuments and still-functioning temples, they attest to the long-standing position of Buddhism as Burma's biggest and most influential religion. But, as in many South-East Asian countries, Hinduism played a significant role in Burma's religious, cultural and political history. Partly, this is down to the influx of ideas from India into Burma - bringing language, art, and religion - and partly it is due to the intertwined nature of the two belief systems. The Buddha was born into Hindu society and Buddhist and Hindu cosmology continue to overlap today, so it is not unusual for a practicing Buddhist to acknowledge certain Hindu gods. Because of this cross-pollination, pre-colonial Buddhist kings of Burma would incorporate elements of Hinduism into the civilisations they built, and this influence can be seen in the architecture of Bagan. Gangtok is the centre of Tibetan learning and culture owing to the presence of several monasteries, religious and educational institutes and centers for Tibetology. The word Gangtok is popularly translated as "hill top". Tourists can visit the monasteries.

In the West the most visited place is Yuksom, which has historical significance. Bodhgaya - Seat of Buddhism

Bodhgaya is a town synonymous with Buddha and Buddhism. Situated in the Gaya district of Bihar, Bodhgaya is the town where Gautam Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment.

The holy city of Bodhgaya is one of the most prominent sites of Buddhist pilgrimage and is situated on the banks of the river Niranjana. It is believed that Gautam Buddha had arrived at the banks of the river Niranjana to practice a life of austerity. However on realising that salvation could not be attained though this, he withdrew from it. He then went on to the village of Senani, where he sat under a Peepal Tree and started his meditation. It is believed by the locals that he did so after accepting a bowl of rice milk from a Brahmin girl and some sacred Kusa grass from a grass cutter.

Gautum Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment after three days of meditation. Following enlightenment he again meditated for a period of 7 weeks, during when he is said to have practiced walking meditation. The Bodhi tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment is said to be situated behind the main temple here.

The city of Bodhgaya is also known as Bodhimanda and the main monastery here as the Bodhimanda-vihra. Bodhgaya is also part of the quadrat comprising of Kushinagar, Lumbini and and Sarnath, which are the four most important sites in the spiritual life of Gautam Buddha. The city of Bodhgaya is a haven not only for Buddhist followers but also for any tourist, offering them with a wide variety of beautiful monuments and serene natural beauty. Most of the places in this region have some kind of direct bond with the life of Gautam Buddha. This place remained a prominent Buddhist centre until the advent of the Turks in the 13th century.

The Niranjana river, on whose shores Bodhgaya is situated joins the Mohana river to form the Phalgu river, which is considered very sacred. Very interesting among the many places of worship here are the numerous shrines dedicated to Lord Buddha by many countries such as ! China, J apan, Bangladesh and Vietnam.

It is believed that Asoka visited Bodhgaya 250 years after Buddha attained enlightenment and constructed the Mahabodhi Temple, a monastery and erected a diamond throne shrine.

The two most important festival in Bodhgaya is the Buddha Jayanti which celebrates the birth of Lord Buddha and Buddha Purnima which is observed as the day Buddha attained enlightenment. Another very important celebration which is attended by even Dalai Lama is the Nyingma Monlam Chenmo, celebrated over a period of 3 weeks.

Bodhgaya is best visited between the months of October and March, when not only is the weather pleasant, but it is also the time when special Buddhist meditation programs are organised.

Some people have a good sense of focus and concentration. They can control and focus their mind no matter what is happening around them. Because people are so individual, meditation has a variety of different effects. Factors such as mood, individuality, and character can affect their meditation results. When a person can not understand himself, his confusion is reflected to his actions. Thus, contemplation is needed to achieve an enlightened consciousness.

The essentials of meditation include a quite space for reflection, a mantra to be recited, and total concentration. Although sitting is considered the best basic form of meditating, there are other ways to achieve the process. After you become familiar with the practice, you can create other forms of meditation. When you have set your mind for meditation, it will be easier to stay well tuned. The spiritual essence and mental awareness can be combined with the mental and physical flow of life.

When meditation becomes part of your normal routine, you will always find time to meditate. It is only natural that you will always be in search of that blissful state only reached during moments of meditation.

What should you do if you can not find an area that is conducive of meditation? Even when your environment doesn't lend itself easily to deep thought, it is possible to focus and concentrate. You can place your mind into the state of meditation by focusing on an area in the room, your own breathing, or a small object. Tricky colors and relaxing music can help achieve meditation and extend such practice beyond the period of meditation.
