Chemicals in Nail Polish, Hair Spray May Increase Diabetes Risk

A group of chemicals found in personal care products may raise the risk of diabetes, a new study suggests.

Women in the study with highest concentrations of these chemicals, called phthalates, in their bodies were more likely to have diabetes than women with lowest concentrations, the researchers said.

Phthalates are found in a variety of products, including nail polish, hair sprays, soaps and shampoos.

There was also a link between high concentrations of phthalates and insulin resistance among women who did not have diabetes. (Insulin resistance is often a precursor to Type 2 diabetes).

The findings suggest that phthalates could disrupt blood sugar metabolism, said study researcher Tamarra James-Todd, of Brigham and Women's Hospital's Division of Women's Health.

However, the researchers cautioned the study surveyed participants at only one point in time, and more research is needed that follows women over years to confirm the results.

Phthalates are present in certain medications and medical devices, and its possible women with diabetes have higher phthalate concentrations in their bodies due to the use of these medications or devices, James-Todd said.

James-Todd and colleagues analyzed information from 2,350 women ages 20 to 80 who took part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between 2001 and 2008. As part of the survey, participants underwent physical exams and provided urine samples.

Of the participants, 217 reported having diabetes.

Women who had the highest levels of two chemicals — mono-benzyl phthalate and mono-isobutyl phthalate — in their urine samples were nearly twice as likely to have diabetes as women with the lowest levels of those chemicals, the study found.

Women with moderately high levels of the chemicals mono-n-butyl phthalate and di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate had approximately a 70 percent increased risk of diabetes.

The findings held even after the researcher accounted for factors that could influence phthalate levels, such as the amount of calories of fat women consumed.

Previous studies in rats have found that exposure to certain phthalates increases blood glucose levels.

It's possible that phthalates indirectly increase the risk of diabetes by interfering with the metabolism of fat tissue, which can lead to insulin resistance, the researchers said.

"If future studies determine causal links between phthalates and diabetes, then reducing phthalate exposure could decrease the risk of diabetes in women," the researchers write in the July 13 issue of the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.

Tick-Borne Trouble: More Than 1,100 Babesiosis Cases Reported in 2011

People who live in or travel to the Northeast or upper Midwest this summer should take precautions to avoid contracting babesiosis, a tick-born disease native to those areas, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In 2011, more than 1,100 cases of babesiosis from 15 states were reported to the CDC.

Ninety-seven percent of cases occurred in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Wisconsin. Most cases — 82 percent — occurred in the summer months (June through August). More than half of infected people were over age 60.

Babesiosis is caused by the parasite Babesia microti, which infects red blood cells. Symptoms can include fever, nausea and headache, although most people infected with the parasite feel fine, the CDC says.

In recent years, cases of babesiosis in the United States have increased, and the disease may be spreading into new regions. Last year was the first time health officials reported cases of the disease to the CDC using a standard definition of the illness. Surveillance for the disease occurred in 18 states.

To prevent babesiosis infection, people who live in or travel to regions where the disease is found should take the following precautions: avoid tick-infested areas, apply repellents, wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts when outdoors, shower soon after being outdoors, and check their entire bodies for ticks, the CDC says.

Tick bites are the most common way babesiosis is transmitted, but people can also become infected through blood transfusions, and the disease can pass from mother to child during pregnancy.

In 2011, 10 people were suspected of contracting babesiosis through blood transfusions, and one case of congenital transmission of the disease was reported.

Treatments for babesiosis are effective, and usually involve a combination of anti-malarial drugs or antibiotics, such as quinine and clindamycin, according to the New York State Department of Health. But most people do not become sick enough to require treatment, and the CDC says people who do not have symptoms should not be treated with drugs.

Because there's no way to screen the blood supply for the babesiosis parasite, people known to have had the disease should refrain from donating blood indefinitely, the CDC says.

Ongoing surveillance for the disease will allow officials to develop effective prevention and control measures to reduce the burden of babesiosis, the report says.

The report will be published tomorrow (July 13) in the CDC journal Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Parents Rank 'Judgment' as a Big Problem in Raising a Child with Autism

When Selena Barclay took her three sons to watch the Fourth of July fireworks in their small Missouri town last week, her son Logan quickly became upset by the noises and crowds. Feeling agitated and anxious, Logan sought comfort in his mother's arms and pulled her hands to cover his ears.

But the sight of Logan, a tall 13-year-old, sitting cradled on his mothers lap, drew disapproving looks and stares from people sitting around them. Logan has an autism spectrum disorder, and Barclay said she is unfortunately accustomed to such treatment.

"Other parents look at you, like, 'Oh my gosh, what is going on there?'" said Barclay, a 31-year old medical assistant.

During trips to the grocery store, Logan will scream, curse and sometimes have a full-fledged tantrum, Barclay said.

"People will stare, or they will just completely, not even look at you, and walk away," Barclay said. She's felt judged and ostracized, she said. "Most people think that you just need to discipline your child more."

A new study finds that Barclay's experiences are common among parents of children with autism. Researchers in England interviewed parents about the biggest challenges they face in their daily lives.

Among the problems that parents identified, dealing with judgments from other adults ranked second only to dealing with their child's behavioral problems. The financial burden of autism — including medical treatments or specialized child care — and the emotional impact that it can have on a family, were rated by fewer parents as a problem, the study found.

"Autism is a condition which is difficult for many to understand," said study researcher Amanda Ludlow, a lecturer in psychology at the University of Birmingham. One reason is the great variation in the characteristics of people with autism — some children with an autism spectrum disorder barely speak, while others have an extensive vocabulary, but are extremely literal in their language, she said.

Dealing with judgment

About one in 88 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The challenges that parents of children with autism face aren't well-studied, so Ludlow and her colleagues interviewed 20 parents whose children have an autism disorder. One recurring theme that emerged was that parents felt judged by other adults when their children acted out.

"People question your parenting skills," Barclay said. Children often have no outward signs of their autism, and looking completely normal opens them up for judgment in a way that children with more obvious disabilities are not judged, she said.

Barclay said she lost touch with her group of high school friends, who all had children around the same time, when her son began acting differently than the others.

"Logan had been developing normally, and he was potty trained, then he regressed," Barclay said. "He started acting weird — he went to the bathroom in his pants, stopped talking as much and made up his own language. He would hit and bite kids. After a while, those invites and phone calls started dwindling."

Ludlow said that some parents in the study also mentioned a lack of understanding from their own parents or in-laws. There appeared to be a generation gap: people who weren't aware of autism as a medical condition for most of their adult lives assumed children's behavior came down to parenting, and they would outgrow it if disciplined, she said. She noted that her study, published this month in the Journal of Health Psychology, was small, and that not parents' experiences are the same. 

Indeed, Barclay said when she introduced Logan to the parents of her husband (who is not Logan's father), her father-in-law said, "that child needs a spanking." Logan and his stepgrandfather have since become very close, she said, but it took about six months to gain an understanding of Logan's condition.

What can be done?

The best thing people can do, if they see a child acting out, is to offer to help the parent, Barclay said. She recalled feeling enormously grateful to a neighbor who, upon seeing Logan have a tantrum at Barclay's home, packed up backpacks for her two other sons and took them to her home for the evening.

Even strangers In the grocery store can help, she said, for example, by offering to tell a store manager about items have been broken in the course of a tantrum, or keeping an eye on other children while a parent focuses on dealing with their autistic child, she said.

Public outbursts also provide an excellent opportunity for parents to talk to their own children about children with autism, she said. "They can stop their kids from bullying by explaining to their children what's going on. Kids can be mean, but if you explain to them what's happening, when they see that behavior on their own, they won't think it's so weird."

Lisa Goring, the vice president of family services at the charity Autism Speaks, said she once helped a grandmother in the grocery store with her autistic grandson by offering to wait in the cashier's line and purchase the groceries (with the grandmother's money), giving the woman a chance to take the boy outside for a cool-down period.

"It's really important that families who encounter such behavior not to judge. Give a knowing smile, convey that it's ok," Goring said. Parents hosting children in their homes can offer a child a quiet room where they can take a break from the crowd, if they need it. Children can be instructed to make sure they extend invitations to those with autism, but not pressure them to accept the invitation, she said.

With greater awareness of autism, Goring said, the tide has been turning, and judgment may be becoming less common. Recently, she assisted in making a reality show where a child actor behaved distraught in a restaurant, much as a child with autism would act, and a candid camera captured bystanders' reactions.

To her surprise, she said, most people were understanding, and even spoke up to shush an "antagonist" actor who was planted to criticize the child and aggravate the situation.

"It shows how important awareness is," she said.

Ayurveda is believed to have originated in India thousands of years ago. The earliest mention of this medicine system is seen in Rig Veda which is 6000 years old. As the earliest concepts are set in the sacred writings, the Vedas, ayurveda is looked upon as to have a divine origin. According to a writer, Dhanvantari, the god of medicine, received this system of medicine was from Brahma.The Rig Veda, consists of a series of prescriptions that help overcome different ailments such as diarrhea, abscesses, cough, tumors, consumption, dropsy and skin diseases. There are treatments mentioned in ayurveda for the complex treatments as well , like diabetes, stones, hypertension,. There are also mentions of treatment of fractures, stitching of wounds, amputations etc. Gradually, the use of surgical instruments and herbs became extensive.The other earliest works of ayurveda contain the Charaka Samhita, credited to Charaka. In the text of Charaka Samhita, stress is laid on the spiritual/consciousness, mental regulation and body care of an individual. One can also find the earliest written material containing references to the works of Sushruta is the Bower Manuscript, which goes back to the 6th century AD. The historians take special interest in the Bower manuscript due to the mention of Indian medicine and its concepts.

The early ayurveda had a school of physicians and a school of surgeons. If traditions are to be beli! eved, sa ge Agnivesh, wrote the text Agnivesh tantra that influenced the writings of ayurveda . Fa Hsien, the Chinese pilgrim also mentions the the health care system of the Gupta empire in his memoirs. The medical journals of Charaka and Sushruta were also translated into the Arabic language. These Arabic works crossed over to Europe via intermediaries and spread to other countries like Italy. There are also reports of British physicians traveling to India to see how rhinoplasty was performed by native methods. Is Soy Milk Bad for Teeth?

Soy milk may be worse for your teeth than cow's milk, a new study suggests.

The results show bacteria commonly found in the mouth produce five to six times more acid when they feed on soy milk compared to cow's milk.

Acids in the mouth contribute to the formation of plaque on teeth, which in turn cause tooth decay and the formation of cavities.

The findings suggest soy beverages have a higher potential to cause cavities, compared with cow's milk, the researchers say.

However, the study was conducted in laboratory dishes, and so more work is needed before researchers know whether soy milk actually damages teeth, said William Bowen, professor emeritus of microbiology and immunology at the University of Rochester's Center for Oral Biology, who was not involved in the study.

The cavity risk of most substances depends on how you use them, Bowen said. For instance, drinking one glass of soy milk is unlikely to harm teeth, but allowing a baby to sip from a bottle containing soy milk all day might be cause for concern, Bowen said. In contrast, cow's milk is known not to promote cavities, regardless of how much is consumed, Bowen said.

"It's suspicious, but more work is certainly needed to support the contention," Bowen said of the study's main conclusion.

Eric Reynolds, of the University of Melbourne's Dental School in Australia, and colleagues chose four Australian-brand soy beverages, and two brands of cow's milk for their experiments. The milks were each mixed with bacteria called Streptococcus mutans, which are found in the human mouth and commonly associated with cavities.

They found that the soy beverages, after the addition of the bacteria, became more acidic  within 10 minutes.

In contrast, the acidity of the cow's milk was not changed significantly after the bacteria were added.

The researchers did not include saliva in their experiments, which could produce an effect to counteract the high acid production of soy milk, Bowen noted.

The study was published online May 17 in the Journal of Dentistry.

I'm not bitter toward religion -- just fed up with false claims

Fairly frequently true believers leave comments on this blog saying, "Brian, you're so bitter toward religion." This surprises me. 

I don't feel bitter toward any religion or spiritual organization, including Radha Soami Satsang Beas (RSSB), the India-based group I was an active member of for about thirty-five years. Rather, I'm disappointed about the false claims RSSB promotes in its teachings.

If I buy a car, or a computer, I expect it will function as advertised. If it doesn't, I don't feel bitterness. Just irritation, disappointment, let-down.

Now, how do I know that RSSB, or any religion, makes false claims? I can't know with 100% certainty. This isn't how knowledge works. Even scientists who study the material world never say "I'm absolutely sure X is true." 

Truth always is provisional, subject to change via new observations, facts, evidence, research. So are claims of falsehood. 

Every morning before I meditate, I say "If there's a god or other supernatural power aware of me, pay a visit; surprise me; show me something of yourself." I'm entirely open to having an experience that makes me cry out Praise Jesus! Praise guru! Praise Allah! Praise Buddha! Praise alien beings! Or praise whoever/whatever.

But I've never had such an experience.

And in my three decades-plus of communicating with many, many other RSSB devotees, before I started this blog and afterward, I've never come across anyone else who had the sort of transcendent, mystical, ultimate-reality knowing, astral traveling, soul-body separating experience the RSSB literature promises.

Most other religions or spiritual practices aren't nearly as specific as RSSB is regarding expectations. Nor, as certain. I bet from the Pope on down, no Christian alive today could say with complete certainty that they know what happens after death, and what the nature of God is.

But Eastern religions such as RSSB are quite different.

They assert that it's possible to become god-realized while in the flesh, to achieve a perfected form of consciousness, to be a "god in human form." The GIHF guru supposedly takes root in each disciple, guiding them both in life and after death, eventually revealing his non-physical nature: spirit ("shabd" in Indian parlance).

So this puts a different slant on what can be expected. Christian ministers don't claim to be god-realized beings. They admit to being seekers of Jesus/God, just as every other Christian is. But certain gurus, such as RSSB's Gurinder Singh, are held up as being God. 

Is this possible? Sure. Is it likely? No, not at all.

Stupendous claims require stupendous evidence to be believed.

After more than forty years of examining evidence for and against the claim that some humans have become more than human, possessing powers of omniscience, omnipotence, omnipresence, and such normally attributed only to God, I've concluded that the evidence (or lack thereof) strongly points toward the RSSB gurus, and others making similar claims, being pretenders.

I can understand the reasons for this, which seem to be rooted in Eastern culture and tradition. (See "Who is the guru?" and "A guru should know if he is God."

But I can't understand why someone would make claims about himself, and the spiritiual teachings which he represents, that almost certainly aren't true. After all, every religion -- and there are thousands of them -- makes certain assertions about the nature of a supernatural reality.

Which are contradictory.

They can't all be true, unless we give up the notion of "truth" as referring to anything objective, universal, demonstrable. So the likelihood that any particular religion or spiritual teaching, such as RSSB, is the One True Knowledge of God... that's so small as to be almost non-existent. 

I've learned a lot over the past forty years. For that, I'm grateful.

Every experience I've had, including experiences of disappointment, have made me who I am today. But just as I look back with irritation on cars and computers I've bought which didn't perform as advertised, so do I view religions which make false claims.
