However, there are still some misconceptions about yoga among a number of people. They think this powerful ancient method of achieving complete health is a sport or only meant for women and they also have misconception in mind that it requires lot of difficult postures and exercise.

There are most of the people, who take yoga is a sport and thinks that yoga is just about few physical exercises which are part of a sport. But let me tell you, yoga is a set of physical postures, known as asanas in Sanskrit. If you have a misconception of yoga that it's similar to body building, then it's your mistake. Yoga is not a casual sport for passing time which one can take up and practice now and then like any other sport. It is an art and science of physical, mental and spiritual consciousness, which makes an individual's body strong enough to overcome various ailments.

In many parts of the world, the yoga is practiced by women and people have misconceptions of yoga that only women can practice it. The fact is that yoga provides inner strength and peace for complete health for every one. Anyone who wishes an effective method to gain mental, spiritual and physical strength ness can practice yoga.

Last but not the least; yoga doesn't demand extreme practice. It's quite true that certain yoga asanas are a bit complex to practice, and require an agile body. However the selection of yoga asanas should be done according to the ailments that a person suffers from. An experienced yoga instructor will be able to depict you yoga postures that can be easily done.

DAVID ICKE : Low Vibrational Conciousness - Avoid It!!

Reptilian Demons are a lower level energy being, therefore thet are only attracted to lower level humans or humans that have a lower or dark/negative vibration. A humans vibration is based on his or her energy/soul power and conciousness. Someone might think they are on a higher vibration because they are religious or they do yoga etc, but in reality it is much deeper than that. Most people are on a lower vibration. If someone like Jesus was real and alive today he would be someone who is on such a higher energetic vibration that demons and all lower level forces would not be able to touch him. Have you ever heard the phrase like attracts like? They only go where they are allowed to go. Your vibrational frequency will attract emotions and physical manifestations of things that vibrate at the same frequency. When a person lives a life unaware of their true spiritual nature, their consciousness is stuck in low vibrational frequencies. www.davidicke.com Song You Follow My Sorrow by, Kelvin Rush "Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Do You Recognize These 7 Tricks Your Mind Is Playing on You?

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 11:00 AM PDT

So, you want to change your life and be happier? Maybe happiness means unlocking your greater potential, enhancing your quality of life, or realizing your lifelong dreams.

By now you may have absorbed countless personal development books, videos, or blogs. Sometimes you find something that resonates but the excitement constantly fades. Too often, you feel like you're back right where you started.

Lost.

Have you ever considered that your own mind is sabotaging your path to happiness? While your mind may not be the sole culprit, it is a clever foe. Your brain can mislead and make you miserable...and you won't even know it.

But all is not lost. You can learn how to recognize your mind's deception and develop the right mindset. Check out this list of seemingly harmless thoughts to see if your mind is tricking you out of your happiness.
  1. From now on, I'm going to do my best.
How often have you pressured yourself to think positive after an unhappy incident or after seeing something inspirational? While pressure can sometimes provide the necessary push, commanding yourself to do your "best" doesn't give you much flexibility.

We've been conditioned to believe that when we want to make an important change, we have to take a huge leap. But what if you're having a bad day? The energy is suddenly lost, everything looks bleak, and you can't talk yourself out of it.

    You feel like a failure.

It's important to remember that the change you want requires time, persistence, and patience. So, take one small step at a time and leave room to learn from your mistakes.

  2. I just need to be more like...
It's normal to think that ! you shou ld strive to be like those you admire. The problem arises when you wish you could be them.

If you get too wrapped up in mimicking someone else, you'll forget to pay attention to who you are—your needs, your values, your character, your journey.

By all means, learn what you can from your role models and adapt or modify ideas to fit you. But don't forget to find your own voice. Gaining self-knowledge and self-respect is invaluable to building a lasting happiness.

  3. I'll just follow what the experts say.
It's easy to think that experts can help you find your way to happiness. When you're down, their words are like beacons of hope. But that hope can be fleeting if you don't apply the lessons to real life.

Experts share lessons from their own experiences. While advice helps, their words serve only as hints, not answers for your journey. It's in your own real experiences where you will piece yourself together, realize your capabilities, and find out what matters to you.

    Learn to trust yourself.

  4. I'm so busy. I'll find more time to focus on myself...later.
Nowadays, being really busy has become something worth bragging about or something you can't escape. However, keep living this way and finding "you" time will start looking impossible. You will probably even blame your commitments for stealing your time.

But is it truly impossible for you to make time for yourself? Are you busy or is it avoidance? Are there duties you can cut out?

Really look at your schedule, prioritize, and put in a little "you" time. Everything else would benefit more if you spent some time caring for your needs.

  5. I'm too tired. I need a break.
Maybe you are taking some "you" time but you don't want to think about anything too intensely. Breaks help you recharge y! our mind . However, there is such a thing as having too many breaks. In this case, "taking a break" becomes an excuse to escape.

Thinking about your life shouldn't feel like a chore. Take advantage of the moments when your brain isn't dwelling on too many things. For starters, take 10 minutes and ask yourself what you've been doing, why you're doing it, and what will make you happier? It's worth your time.

  6. Other people are just luckier than me.
Bad luck—a popular self-reassurance when we're incapable of understanding why we're not getting what we want. It's a mild form of comfort that temporarily eases the pain but can create resentment of others.

But why put your life at the hands of luck? Personally, I'm a firm believer of "you make your own luck." Do the work you know is necessary because luck can't give you your future happiness—you do.

Have some more faith in yourself because your goals need you—your energy, passion, and determination—if they are to survive.

  7. I can't wait until the day...
    ...when I'm happier about my life...when I'm successful...when I'm healthier...when I find my purpose in life.

Daydreaming is healthy to some extent. It allows you to be creative and visualize where you want to be. It only becomes dangerous when you don't do anything about it.

Don't live that happier life in your head. Good things come to those who go after them.

Sure, it's not going to happen overnight. You may experience plenty of false starts and—let's face it—there's a chance you might fail. But keep going, try again or move on to the next thing. After all, isn't life about experiencing and learning from the good and the bad? Meeting new people, exploring ideas, and discovering new places?

Your life won't change if you are passing the time in your dream world. Time is precious, so be in the present! and get going.

Want happiness? Know and believe in yourself.
Now that you're aware of these thought traps, you can safely evade them. All that's left is for you to truly believe and apply yourself. Your mind is going to be with you through thick and thin. So, if you want your mind to always work with you instead of against you, then you must find the reasons to believe in yourself.

Be aware, honest, and true to yourself. You are your own ultimate guide for your journey towards happiness. Now, go for it!

Tone down the negative, enhance the positive

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 10:00 AM PDT

Painful experiences range from subtle discomfort to extreme anguish – and there is a place for them. Sorrow can open the heart, anger can highlight injustices, fear can alert you to real threats, and remorse can help you take the high road next time.

But is there really any shortage of suffering in this world? Look at the faces of others – including mine – or your own in the mirror, and see the marks of weariness, irritation, stress, disappointment, longing, and worry. There's plenty of challenge in life already – including unavoidable illness, loss of loved ones, old age, and death – without needing a bias in your brain to give you an extra dose of pain each day.

Your brain evolved exactly such a "negativity bias" in order to help your ancestors pass on their genes – a bias that produces lots of collateral damage today.

Painful experiences are more than passing discomforts. They produce lasting harms to your physical and mental health. When you're feeling frazzled, pressured, down, hard on yourself, or simply frustrated, that:

  • Weakens your immune system
  • Impairs nutrient absorption in your gastrointestinal system
  • Increases vulnerabilities in your cardiovascular system
  • Decreases your reproductive hormones; exacerbates PMS
  • Disturbs your nervous system

Consider the famous saying: "Neurons that wire together, fire together." This means that repeated painful experiences – even mild ones – tend to:

  • Increase pessimism, anxiety, and irritability
  • Lower your mood
  • Reduce ambition and positive risk-taking

In couples, upsetting experiences foster mistrust, heightened sensitivity to relatively small issues, distance, and vicious cycles. At much larger scales – between groups or nations – they do much the same.

So don't take painful experiences lightly, neither the ones you get nor, honestly, the ones you give. Prevent them when you can, and help them pass through when you can't.

How?

This week, take a stand for yourself, for feeling as good as you reasonably can. A stand for bearing painful experiences when they walk through the door – and a stand for encouraging them to keep on walking, all the way out of your mind.

This is not being at war with discomfort or distress, which would just add negativity, like trying to put out a fire with gasoline. Instead, it is being kind to yourself, wise and realistic about the toxic effects of painful experiences.

In effect, you're simply saying to yourself something you'd say to a dear friend in pain: I want you to feel better, and I'm going to help you. Try saying that to yourself in your mind right now. How does it feel?

When emotional pain does come, even softly, try to hold it in a large space of awareness. In a traditional metaphor, imagine stirring a big spoon of salt into a cup of water and then drinking it: yuck. But then imagine stirring that spoonful into a clean bucket of water and then drinking a cup: it's the same amount of salt – the same amount of worry or frustration, feeling inadequate or blue – but held in a larger context. Notice that awareness is without any edges, boundless like the sky, with thoughts and feelings passing through.

In your mind, watch out for how negative information, events, or experiences can seem to overpower positive ones. For example, researchers have found that people typically will work harder or put up with more crud to avoid losing something than to gain the same thing. And they feel more contaminated by one fault than they feel cleansed or elevated by several virtues. Try to switch this around; for instance, pick some of your good qualities and keep seeing how they show up in your life this week.

Be careful whenever you feel stymied, frustrated, or disappointed. Humans (and other mammals) are very vulnerable to what's called "learned helplessness" – developing a sense of futility, immobilization, and passivity. Focus on where you can make a difference, where you do have power; it may only be inside your own mind, but that's better than nothing at all.

In your relationships, be mindful of reacting more strongly to one negative event than to a bunch of positive ones. For example, studies have shown that it typically takes several positive interactions to make up for a single negative encounter. Pick an important relationship, and then really pay attention to what's working in it; let yourself feel good about these things. Deal with the problems in this relationship, sure, but keep them in perspective.

Overall, whenever you remember, deliberately tilt toward the positive in your mind. That's not looking at the world through rose-colored glasses. Given the negativity bias in the brain, you're only leveling the playing field.

Dedicated but Balanced

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 08:00 AM PDT

Editor's note: This is a guest post from Brad Pilon, author of Eat Stop Eat.

Here is an experiment I'd like you to try:

Log in to your banking account. Check how much money you have.

Now log out.

Now log back in, check how much money you have.

Now Log out.

Repeat this two to three more times.

I'm willing to bet my money that your money did not change as a result of how many times you checked on it.

The point of this experiment is obsessing about things isn't actually action. It rarely, if ever changes the circumstance you are obsessing about.

There are dozens of examples of this in life, but none that hit as close to home for me as health and fitness.

We've become obsessed with obsessing about health and fitness. We argue, debate, nitpick, research, tweet, blog, think, try and then give up on countless health fitness theories on a daily basis, all in the name of chasing the promise of 'health'.

This is something I have grown tired of – especially the endless promotion of obsession as health, exhaustion as virtue and suffering as dedication.

In my eyes the very act of trying to achieve a healthy body is becoming extremely unhealthy, almost a form of self-mortification where people use the gym and the avoidance of their favorite foods as a way to 'punish' themselves for their past 'unhealthy' indiscretions.

Maybe we can blame the unrealistic goals people have of attaining 0% body fat and giant incredible-hulk style muscles, and the thought that our failure to achieve these goals must be a testament to our poor dedication and work ethic. Or it could be the wrong diet, or wrong workout, or wrong grip when performing curls … who knows?

Whatever the cause, the fact is that health and nutrition is sick.

Workouts have slowly progressed into competitions to see who can punish themselves the hardest, to the point where vomit on the floor is something to be celebrated.

Food is also transforming. It's no longer about enjoying your meals as much as it is fueling the body. People are slowly forgetting how to eat, and as a result eating is becoming a means-to-and-end – a way to control your body weight. And that's it.

Food is either fuel, or a guilty bad habit.

Now, it is completely true that in my book Eat Stop Eat I talk about hormones, free fatty acids and how fasting sets up the ideal 'fat loss metabolism'. However, it was more than just interesting science and a new style of eating (or not eating) that drove me to write that book – it was a desire to share a mind set.

That health can (and should) be about being 'dedicated but balanced', rather than 'obsessed and inflexible'.

I call this the art of 'detach and relax' – and it's one of the most important things I learned through fasting – the ability to focus your effort and attention, combined with the ability to scale them up and down as needed.

Health and fitness should be a part of your life, but it shouldn't BE your life … at least, it doesn't have to be.

You can be incredibly focused during your workout and put forth an amazing amount of effort. But then you can detach and relax. Don't take it home with you, don't obsess about it.

Your workout is done, your body is stimulated, now let it do what it does best. As much as you wish you could, you simply cannot control the finer aspects of how your body works. (If you doubt this then try to create a new vein in your right bicep, let me know how it goes)

You can be aware of what and when you are eating, but once you are done making a food decision, try to detach and relax. Don't obsess about your food choices, don't let your food control you. After all, food is your to be enjoyed.

Learn to be patient and to take breaks from eating. You do NOT have to eat all the time, and you certainly don't need to fast all the time either.

Your food won't disappear or become any less enjoyable because you waited. And really, small amount of patience – a slight pause – is all most of us need to realize "I don't need this", or "I can wait until diner" or even "I can wait until tomorrow – I've had enough today".

Detach and Relax.

You simply can not be all health and fitness all the time.

Eat less, move more, don't be afraid to break a sweat every once in a while, and remember to be balanced. When we obsess over health and nutrition, it is no longer healthy.

Give full focus and effort when it is appropriate. Be present during your workout session, but after that turn it off.

As much as some people may hate to hear it, and I know I've said it before, but it bears repeating – there is more to life than chasing 0% body fat, blood and puke in the gym and the macro-nutrients on your plate.

What are the Chakras

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 07:00 AM PDT

Article by Meagan Mott

Chakras (pronounced sho-kras) are energy stores that hold information within objects. As humans we have Seven main chakras and many other smaller ones.

Why are colors associated with Chakras?

Colors are emitted by the spectrum of light energy in everything around us. Even our flesh is the color it is due to the frequency of vibration we emit.

Colors on the lower end of the specrum vibrate at a slower rate such as red, orange and yellow. As energy vibrates at a higher frequency the colors alter to include green, blue, indigo, violet, red-blue and gold.

Our Chakras consist of varying wavelengths of energy (vibrating at different resonance) to equate to a different color.

With practice, you can learn to tap in to this energy to see chakras, and the energy around the body given off as an aura. This energy is like your individual blueprint, and holds information such as how you think, the decisions you have made, what you are stuck on, what is working for you in your life.

What purpose do the Chakras have?

These energy centers hold important information like a log book of every decision, feeling, thought and emotion. Each of the seven main chakras hold an underlining truth we are to understand and practice to increase our spiritual consciousness and enlightenment.

The clearer and more balanced our chakras are, the more in harmony our lives are. When our chakras are clogged, cloudy, and imbalanced, there is a higher level of chaos in all areas of our life including emotional, physical and spiritual.

This does not mean that clear, healthy chakras will eliminate any disorder or bad experiences in our lives however, by learning to live our lives based on our truths and how to connect with our power source and have clearer chakras we can definitely have a more joyous life and appreciate our rich experiences by looking past the illusions of daily life.

OSHO: Spiritual Growth and Enlightenment

Osho, a contemporary mystic has spoken on virtually every aspect of human consciousness. In these talks, the human mind is put under the microscope as never before, analyzed down to the smallest wrinkle. -- In this talk Osho responds to the following 4 questions: -- Question 1: Are there different stages of spiritual growth? And if so, can you talk to us about them, and how people in these different stages can be helpful to each other? -- Question 2: Your emphasis has always been that every human being has the birthright to become enlightened, that it is nothing special. However, not many people claim this birthright, or are even interested in it. Why not? Is there some ingredient, some quality which makes some people more interested in the inquiry than others? -- Question 3: Often you have spoken about your rebellious childhood and how it gave you such freedom, how you insisted on discovering your own individuality. How did you know the need to rebel at this early age? What about those people who didn't have the courage to rebel and who had a hampered childhood? Is a rebellious childhood necessary for enlightenment? -- Question 4: You have said that your sannyasins live individual lives in freedom. Doesn't everyone live an individual life? What is the difference that makes a person a sannyasin? Is it meditation? -- "....If we can create a circle of conscious energy around the earth, that is the only hope for the world, for the new man. Otherwise, this century is going to ...

Spotting secular Buddhists

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 07:00 AM PDT

For me, it is easy to spot the Buddhists who are the so-called secular Buddhists.  Mainly, they are either European or American.  They don't believe in any kind of afterlife—perish the thought of NDEs!  They also believe that we are the sum total of our physical anatomy so that when the brain dies, that's it.  It's absolute death after brain death.  Adding a bit more to this, they are pseudo-skeptics, terribly mediocre, and depressed (I suspect the majority are on SSRIs).

Why these people claim to be Buddhists is difficult to explain, easily.  One thing I do know, they believe garbage like this:

"The Buddha's psychological principles [are] derived logically from his materialist metaphysics.  Lacking soul or permanent entity, distinct individual personality is an impossibility.  What is mistaken for self is only a bundle of attributes (the senses and consciousness) held together temporarily as the spokes of a wheel are fastened around the hub" (World Civilizations, Volume 1, ninth edition).

The dimwit professors who cobbled this together are describing what the Buddha rejected.  The Buddha regarded the psychophysical body to be impermanent, unsatisfactory and lacking a self (anâtman).  But this is not the state of nirvana (P., nibbana) which is attained in the very self (paccattam); which is basically the goal of all Buddhists except secular Buddhists who regard death as nirvana.

(It is clear from many passages in the Pali canon and the Mahayana canon that nirvana is not in the category of physicality—it transcends it.  Specifically, it has nothing to do with the psychophysical organism otherwise known in Buddhism as the Five Aggregates (pañcaskandha).  The subject of nirvana is not a term secular Buddhists are comfortable with; it's a subject they wish to ignore.)

A Simple Introduction To The Main Types of Yoga

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Yoga
by chexed

Article by Robena Fregeau

Individuals are frequently bewildered by the various yoga choices offered for them to practice. We thought it might be valuable to lay out and explain the main yoga styles beneath.

Hatha

Hatha yoga is actually a very general term that can easily encompass many of the physical sorts of yoga. It is the area of raja yoga best known in the West, baseded upon bodily refinement as well as bolstering as a method of self-transformation. It encompasses a system of over 1000 asanas (postures), tailored to promote mental and bodily well-being and to enable the mind to focus and come to be liberated of interruption for long periods of reflection, along with pranayama (breath control). If a session is advertised as Hatha style, it is probably going to be slow-paced and soft as well as offering a very good intro to the basic yoga poises.

Vinyasa

Like Hatha, Vinyasa is an overall phrase that is used to illustrate several different types of classes. Vinyasa, which translates as breath-synchronised movement, tends to be a considerably more energetic type focused on the execution of a series of poses dubbed Sun Salutations, in which motion is synchronised with breathing. A Vinyasa session will commonly begin with a sequence of Sun Salutations to warm up the body for more intense stretching that's carried out later on. Unlike Ashtanga, with Vinyasa yoga the "asanas" can be organized into assorted sequences designed to fulfill the practitioner's need or frame of mind.

Ashtanga

The practice of Ashtanga, which is obtaining a lot of recognition today, is actually a fast-paced collection of sequential poses performed by yoga master K. Pattabhi Jois. In class, you'll be guided continuously along a series of postures always carried out in the same order. This style is surprisingly physically demanding because of the constant movement from one poise to the next. In yoga language, this motion is termed flow. Get ready to sweat, raise your stamina and your pliability.

Power Yoga

Early p upils of K. Pattabhi Jois developed power Yoga. In a similar way, it is physically difficult, as well as flowing. Unlike Ashtanga, Power Yoga does not demand a fixed routine. A Power Yoga session will be built around the flowing style of Ashtanga, but not necessarily adhere solely to the fixed Ashtanga collection of postures.

Iyengar Style

Based on the instructions of the yogi B.K.S Iyengar, this variety of practice is most concerned with bodily alignment, encouraging the students to sink deeper within the experience of each pose. This is actually the trademark of Iyengar Yoga-an extreme concentration on the nuances of each pose. In an Iyengar session, poises (specifically standing postures) are actually generally held much longer than in other schools of yoga, so that practitioners can heed close attention to the specific muscular and skeletal alignment this system requires. Also particular to Iyengar is the use of props, including belts, chairs, blocks, and blankets, to help accommodate virtually any special requirements such as injuries or structural imbalances.

Kundalini

The significance when it comes to Kundalini is actually on the breath in conjunction with bodily motion, with the objective of relieving energy in the reduced body and permitting it to flow upwards. All asana practices utilize controlling the breath. Yet in Kundalini, the exploration of the outcomes of the breath (also named prana, meaning energy) on the postures is essential.

Anusara Yoga Style

A new form of yoga exercises founded in 1997 by John Friend, Anusara means "flowing with grace". It is an integrated approach to Hatha yoga in which the human spirit blends with the clear-cut science of biomechanics. Anusara sessions are usually light-hearted and accessible to people of varying capabilities. Poses are demonstrated in a manner that opens up the heart, both physically and mentally, and props are regularly used.

Jivamukti

This style of yoga exercise emerged from among New York's be! st-known yoga venues. Jivamukti originators David Life and Sharon Gannon take motivation from Ashtanga yoga and focus on chanting, meditation, and spiritual teachings. They have actually educated a lot of coaches that have brought this variety of yoga to studios and gyms, mainly in the United States of America. These sessions are physically extreme and often include some chanting.

Restorative

Restorative Yoga focuses on unwinding the body in restful postures. Rest gives the body an opportunity to replenish as well as get well. A great number of studies have proven the physical as well as psychological perks of this.

In Restorative yoga, props are utilized to support the body so that you can sustain poses for longer, allowing you to open your body with passive stretching. Restorative poses are usually adjusted from supine or seated yoga poses with the addition of blocks, bolsters, as well as blankets to do away with unwarranted straining. Sivananda Yoga

This yoga practice is centered around the philosophy of Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh, India, who taught disciples to "serve, love, provide, purify, meditate, realize." In order to accomplish this goal, Sivananda proposed a course that would distinguish and synthesise each amount of the mortal experience incorporating the psyche, heart, body, and mind. Sivananda yoga is based upon five concepts:

1. Suitable exercising (Asana, concentrating on 12 poses in particular)

2. Proper breathing (Pranayama)

3. Suitable rest (Savasana)

4. Appropriate diet (Vegetarian)

5. Affirmative thought (Vedanta) and meditation (Dhyana)

Yin Yoga

A stilling process which promotes a deep feeling of awareness as well as the capability for endless potential through a profound release of mind\/body worries and conditioning. The perfect antidote to urban living, Yin Yoga prioritizes releasing as well as letting go via the deep musculature of the body and connective muscles, assisting bodily, energetic, psychological and ! emotiona l flexibility. It is truly the excellent addition and balance to 'accomplishing' a dynamic style.

Meditation

The core practice of yoga, which offers us insight within and connects us with ourselves. Though straightforward and easy to practice, its effects are effective and far-reaching. An expanding body of contemporary investigation has actually presented the advantages in terms of deep pleasure, psychological balance, innovation, a spirit of well being as well as numerous others.

However reflection transcends the body and the mind and unites us with ourselves on a deeper level.

Finding right meditation technique key to satisfaction

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 06:00 AM PDT

New to meditation and already thinking about quitting? You may have simply chosen the wrong method. A new study published online July 7 in EXPLORE: The Journal of Science and Healing highlights the importance of ensuring that new meditators select methods with which they are most comfortable, rather than those that are most popular.

If they do, they are likely to stick with it, says Adam Burke, the author of the study. If not, there is a higher chance they may abandon meditation altogether, losing out on its myriad personal and medical benefits. Burke is a professor of Health Education at SF State and the director of SF State's Institute for Holistic Health Studies.

"Because of the increase in both general and clinical use of meditation, you want to make sure you're finding the right method for each person," he said. Although meditation has become significantly more popular in the U.S., Burke said, there have been very few studies comparing multiple methods head to head to examine individual preference or specific clinical benefits.

To better understand user preference, Burke compared four popular meditation methods — Mantra, Mindfulness, Zen and Qigong Visualization — to see if novice meditation practitioners favored one over the others. The study's 247 participants were taught each method and asked to practice at home and, at the end of the study, evaluate which they preferred. The two simpler methods, Mantra and Mindfulness, were preferred by 31 percent of study participants. Zen and Qigong had smaller but still sizable contingents of adherents, with 22 percent and 14.8 percent of participants preferring them, respectively.

The results show the value of providing new practitioners a simpler, more accessible method of meditation. But they also emphasize that no one technique is best for everyone, and even less common methods are preferred by certain people. Older participants, who grew up when Zen was becoming one of the first meditation techniques to gain attention in the U.S., in particular were more likely to prefer that method.

"It was interesting that Mantra and Mindfulness were found to be equally compelling by participants despite the fact that they are fundamentally different techniques," Burke said. Mindfulness is the most recent meditation technique to gain widespread popularity, he added, and is often the only one with which a novice practitioner or health professional is familiar. Not surprisingly, Mindfulness was the method most preferred by the youngest participants.

"If someone is exposed to a particular technique through the media or a healthcare provider, they might assume because it's popular it's the best for everyone," Burke said. "But that's like saying because a pink dress or a blue sport coat is popular this year, it's going to look good on everybody. In truth, different people like different things. One size does not fit all."

If an individual is not comfortable with a specific method for any reason, he said, they may be less likely to continue meditating and would lose out on such benefits as reduced stress, lower blood pressure or even treatment for addiction.

Burke hopes to see more comparative meditation studies, especially to determine if particular methods are better at addressing specific health issues, such as addiction. If that's the case, he said, healthcare professionals would be able to guide patients toward techniques that will be most effective for them. Additional studies are also needed to determine if there is a way to predict which method will be best suited for any particular individual, he said.

Ancient Sister Sciences, Ayurveda and Yoga

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 05:00 AM PDT

Article by Smartbzs

Ayurveda and yoga are sister Vedic sciences which have been united for centuries with regard to healing body, mind, and consciousness. In most cases, Ayurveda deals more using the state of health, while yoga handles purifying your brain and consciousness, but actually they complement and embrace one another.

The traditional rishis (seers) were the initial masters of Vedic sciences. They understood so good health is a superb asset on the way toward Self-realization. When the is neglected it may easily become a hurdle to spiritual practice. Those who have practiced meditation for just about any period of time would accept how difficult it may be to sit down still for very long amounts of time without feeling discomfort and fatigue. Both yoga and Ayurveda are mutually supportive and provide many different ways to avoid and heal various disorders in addition to cleanse and rejuvenate your body.

Besides sharing a philosophical foundation, both systems have numerous similarities with regards to attitude, nutrition, diet, hygiene, exercise, cleansing practices, in addition to spiritual practices. Traditionally, students of yoga would first live near to and serve the guru for several years, where he'd learn healthy habits. The fundamental Ayurvedic principles for health insurance and longevity were past on within the lineage in oral form for everyone like a foundation for any lifetime of sadhana (spiritual practice).

Nowadays, the teachings of yoga are often open to all, and whether prepared or otherwise we are able to leap headlong into its practice. It has its blessings, meaning more people could be switched on towards the teachings, although expensive is often lost with no parampara, or close guidance in the feet of the accomplished master. With this thought, modern yoga practitioners would most definitely take advantage of a fundamental understanding of Ayurveda to assist begin a healthy daily routine and adjust their practice based on the constitution, dosha imbalance, season, and s! o forth, to avoid disease and promote longevity.

First, let us take phone similarities between yoga and Ayurveda:

* Both of them are ancient Vedic teachings. Yoga comes from the Yajur Veda, while Ayurveda comes from the Atharva Veda and Rig Veda.

* Both notice that keeping your body healthy is essential for fulfilling the 4 aims of life: Dharma (duty), Artha (wealth), Kama (desire), and Moksha (liberation).

* Both notice that the total amount of doshas (humors), dhatus (tissues), and malas (waste material) is important for maintaining a healthy body.

* Both share virtually exactly the same metaphysical anatomy and physiology, featuring its 72,000 nadis (subtle channels), 7 main chakras (energy centers), 5 bodily sheaths, and also the Kundalini Shakti (energy).

* Both advocate using diet, herbs, asana, pranayama, meditation, mantra, astrology, prayer, puja, and rituals for healing the whole being.

* Both encourage health like a good foundation for mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

* Both share exactly the same take on psychology. Ayurveda embraces all six from the main schools of philosophy such as the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and Vedanta (a non-dual philosophical and spiritual path). Both of them realize that the attachment towards the body-mind complex may be the real cause of suffering which the best health has experience whenever we abide within our true nature, that is total peace, whatever the state from the physical body.

* Both use cleansing means of your body, which let the elimination of waste material and toxins through their natural routes of elimination. Ayurveda has panchakarma (five cleansing actions) and yoga uses Shat Karma (six purification measures).

Ayurvedic method of asana practice

Using asana, pranayama, and meditation for healing is called Yoga Chikitsa, or Yoga Therapy and it has been employed for 1000's of years by Ayurvedic and yogic adepts. In Yoga Chikitsa, several yogic workouts are chosen which will best of! fer the individual and therefore are practiced daily. You can do this over a long time period along with an Ayurvedic regime and herbal and dietary therapies. Yoga Chikitsa also plays an important role within the Ayurvedic cleansing and rejuvenation process referred to as panchakarma.

For any well-balanced personal yoga practice, you should consider people physiology, prakruti (original constitution), and vikruti (present constitutional imbalance). Listed here are general recommendations based on the predominant dosha.

Vata predominant individuals should make sure to concentrate on calming, grounding, stillness, strengthening, and balancing while doing their practice.

Precautions for vata:

* Vinyasa or flow types of yoga often move too rapidly in one pose to another and may aggravate the hyper-mobile quality of vata with time. Flow sequences can be created to become more vata pacifying if they're not excessively long, the amount of time poses are held is extended, and transitions are carried out slowly and consciously.

* Individuals with back problems could find that bending the knees in standing forward bends can prevent discomfort.

* Back bends ought to be done slowly, carefully and within your own limits.

Pitta individuals should conserve a calm, cool, and relaxed intention while doing asanas. Pitta types will benefit from attempting to cultivate a mindset of forgiveness, as well as surrendering or providing the fruits of the practice towards the divine of to people looking for positive healing energy. Because asana practice has a tendency to generate heat in your body, it is advisable to do them at cooling times during the your day, for example dawn or dusk. Also, it is important to put some focus on poses which help to produce excess heat in the body, for example poses that compress the solar plexus and poses that open the chest area like.

Kapha types are usually sedentary and frequently dislike vigorous exercise. Because of this, their practice ought to be en! ergetic, warming, lightening, which stimulates, providing they're physically capable. Vinyasa or flow style yoga will work for kapha since it is dynamic and moves quickly in one pose to another, it induces sweating and has got the heart pumping.

Yoga poses that address specific doshic problems can be simply put into an Ayurvedic regime and built-into a current yoga routine, or they may be organized like a small session with the aid of an Ayurvedic clinician you never know every individual case well and may help setup a reliable program based on the needs of every client.

Ayurveda also provides Yoga Chikitsa, or Yoga Therapy, for specific doshic disorders. It's advised to see an Ayurvedic practitioner to have an individualized regime.

Ayurvedic Method of Pranayama (breathing techniques).

The best goal of pranayama would be to calm your brain and prepare it for meditation. Additionally, it includes a therapeutic impact on the physical body too. It's not necessary to perform a pranayama practice based on dosha, but knowing its effects on our bodies is really a valuable tool for control over the doshas. Below is really a general listing of pranayama and bandha exercises based on dosha.

Vata: Nadi Shodhana, Kapala Bhati, Agnisara Dhauti, Ujjayi, Tri Bandha, Maha Mudra.

Pitta: Sheetali or Sitkari, Nadi shodhana.

Kapha: Bastrika, Agnisara Dhauti, Kapala Bhati, Ashvini Mudra (contracting and releasing Mula Bandha), Ashvini Mudra, Ujjayi, Tri Bandha, Maha Mudra.

Furthermore, the 4 Purifications taught within our workshops is definitely an ancient method in the Ashtanga Yoga for purifying the gross and subtle body to be able to prepare it for additional advanced practices. They're tridoshic and safe for everybody, providing they're performed correctly.

Meditation Based on Dosha.

These spiritual paths as well as their meditation techniques could be practiced by anyone, no matter their prakruti. This list is just meant to give a concept how dosha supports or influe! nce one' s spiritual practice. Many traditions of yoga blend various facets of the paths right here.

* Vata: Kriya Yoga or Ashtanga Yoga along with other structured techniques help with keeping vata stabilized and focused.

* Pitta: Jnana Yoga and Vedanta are great for pitta types simply because they usually have sharp intellects and also have a keen curiosity about self-study (Atma-vichara).

* Kapha: Bhakti yoga is natural for kapha types since they're often loving and devotional naturally.

Ayurvedic and Yogic Diet.

Ayurveda is much more worried about food being constitutionally balanced, while Yoga promotes an eating plan that's sattwic (light and pure). A mix of each aspect is the greatest option for a yogi or anyone attempting to make real progress on the spiritual path.

Ayurvedic diet:

* Based on dosha.

* Primarily vegetarian (meat can be used as medicine, mainly for extreme deficiencies).

* Primarily cooked (raw food moderately, specifically for vata types).

* Containing six tastes.

Yogic diet:

* Sattwic vegetarian diet.

* Simple to digest.

* Simple meals (to limit desire).

* Both cooked and raw.

* Foods recommended within the Hatha Yoga Pradipika contain rejuvenating substances for example wheat, wholegrain, white basmati, corn, raw milk, raw sugar, butter, ghee, honey, dried ginger, mung beans, pure water, vegetables.

* Fruits, roots and nuts.

* Avoiding excessive hot, sour, salty, fermented, and foods that are fried.

* Avoiding tamasic (dulling) foods like meat, onions, garlicand mushrooms like a regular area of the diet.

Cleansing in Yoga and Ayurveda.

Ayurveda and Yoga both emphasize cleansing from the body for health insurance and support of spiritual practices. Their methods offer a similar experience and work by expelling excess dosha and ama, or toxins, while using body's natural routes of elimination.

The yogic technique is known within the Ashtanga trad! ition as Shat Karma, or six cleansing measures. They are:

1. Neti (nasal cleansing):

Jala neti (brine flushing from the sinuses).

Sutra neti (nasal cleaning with string).

2. Dhauti (cleansing the GI tract).

Teeth, tongue, eyes, ears and forehead.

Agnisara Dhauti.

Vamana Dhauti (vomiting brine).

Vastra Dhauti (washing having a cloth).

Varisara Dhauti (washing with water for purgation).

3. Basti (enema).

4. Trataka (forehead wash, gazing right into a candle flame).

5. Nauli (intestinal washing, abdominal rolling).

6. Kapala Bhati (skull shining).

The Ayurvedic way of cleansing and rejuvenation is called panchakarma (pancha karma), or five cleansing actions. The program is generally accomplished for one or two weeks, but could be also accomplished for for a longer time with respect to the case. 5 actions of the method are:

1. Basti (Enema).

2. Nasya (Nasal use of herbs and herbal oils).

3. Vamana (Therapeutic vomiting).

4. Virechana (Purgation).

5. Rakta Moksha (Blood letting).

There's no question that Ayurveda and yoga not just complement one another. Both sciences actually embrace one another because they share similarities and fundamental principles on many levels. Ayurveda and yoga is going together to achieve optimal health and wellness, peace, and longevity.

Reasons For Loving Abstract Art

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 04:00 AM PDT

Article by Francesco Pratt

I have always loved bright colors and movement, like dancing its healing, relaxing fulfilling and challenging as well. The bottom line is the feeling and message that I want to convey through the medium. When I paint, every attempt is to capture the feel of warmth, passion, joy and bliss in none objective or figurative composition. I enjoy experimentation of different media and subjects.

My subject varies based on my emotion and statement but my love for colors is constant. In spite of this, viewers see different forms or figures in my abstract expressions. The good thing about these expressions is the freedom of the viewers to see and appreciate the forms in their mind's eyes, like face painting in the eye of the viewer. Its also important to mention that "Uli" which is my traditional art style has played a major role in my age long career. The symbols and forms of this art style are reflected in my cubism, abstract images, abstract relief sculpture, seascape, drawing, pastels and watercolor painting.

People see different forms or images in abstract art, the depth of what you actually see when you look at the paintings is partly based on individual exposure and understanding of art forms, color, shapes, line and texture; which are the physical elements that combine to make up the artworks.

A selection of different dark hues, shapes and forms may give various impressions to different minds; light, airy images as mystical; balanced, temperate forms as peaceful. Uli organic forms and shape are symbolical such as colors and forms have meaning in and of themselves. It is a simple truth that you can't give what you don't have. I am a believer and my work time is also a meditation time, which can go either way depending on the spiritual consciousness of the creative mind.

To me, my work section is an intimate moment between I, canvas and colors. At this creative moment there is a spiritual impartation from the artist to the Art. Hence the emotional reaction to these elements ev! en if th ey create no recognizable object for us to hang onto.

I enjoy the inclusion and deletion of space. The handling of space or theillusion of space is another powerful element in the artist's mind. If you are drawn into a yard of three-dimensional space stretching beyond the framework of the painting to sculpture, you are not alone. The impression of depth, perspective, airiness, solidity, textures and other spatial relations are created and controlled to achieve a desired goal. The overall composition or design of my painting or sculpture is created to guide the viewer's eyes to understanding and appreciation of the images.

I must admit, most of my figurative compositions is a celebration of womanhood, which I am very proud to be part of for they are the seats of wisdom and knowledge.

I pride in the feeling and reactions of my clients and viewers to my creations. I feel blessed in many ways than words can express. The challenge sometimes is getting the composition right, or balancing the elements of color, lines and shapes while maintaining a dynamic tension and massage beneath.

Energy is the life force that is present in all good art. This is not something that is easily defined. The life force of every work I do is the same, but different energy and different statements. It is this peculiar energy that makes my works speak to you, and makes them unique, original and identifiable to me. This energy is created out of experience and self-awareness, materials and tools, but the end is more than the means in the same sense that a musical composition is so much more than a collection of notes.

You are welcome into my world of abstract wall art or modern art, relax and let your eye leisurely wander over the collection of verities of art forms and styles. Let your heart and mind react to my colors, shapes, figures and textures. Come and spoil yourself a little in the illusion of vibrant spaces, the movement of lines and the mood of blissful atmosphere.Come, come up close and explor! e the in tricacies of brushstrokes, spatula- strokes, paint thickness, textures and compositional details. Enjoy how the parts are woven together to form the whole.

Take your time. My artwork cannot be understood and appreciated in a ten second glance. Allow my art to grow on you, becoming more interesting and more enjoyable to look at as you live with it.

The Best Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center Guide

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 03:00 AM PDT

Article by Darren King

Congratulations! You just decided to quit drinking and/ taking drugs. But what is the next step?

Enter a treatment center.

You have other concerns like your painful and grueling withdrawal experience, cravings and negative feelings due to substance dependence. Though you have decided to stop taking addictive substances, your body and emotions are not ready to take the challenges of the steps to full sobriety. For these reasons, full assistance from the experts is necessary for you to have a safe, uncomplicated and comfortable transition from addiction to sobriety. It will be beneficial to have a checklist that will guide you in finding the most comfortable and effective treatment center to take care of your concerns.

20 concerns involved in picking a treatment center:

1. Cost of care and extent of insurance coverage- Choose a treatment center that you can afford. Check if it is included in your insurance plan. Inquire about the total cost including the medicines and professional fees2. Detox treatment - Ask about the detox medications, the professional health care providers who will supervise the detoxification and the place where it will be conducted.3. Client to staff ratio - This is to ensure that you will receive the appropriate attention for speedy recovery. 4. Qualifications of the staff - You will be confident in the treatment process if the members of the team are certified professionals.5. Treatment programs offered - This is the most important factor to consider. Your recuperation largely depends on the kind of program you will undergo.6. Twelve -step based program used - This is a highly valuable program in alcohol and drug rehabilitation. You should also ask if they implement holistic care.7. Individualized treatment plan - there is no perfect treatment plan applicable to all. It is important that you will receive health care management suited to your needs.8. Psychiatrist - Since alcoholism and drug addiction are associated with depression and other psycholo! gical pr oblems, it is important to receive the professional help from a psychiatrist. 9. Visitors policies - Inquire about the treatment center's policy regarding your visitors as well as the family support groups available. 10. Length of stay - The duration of your treatment will play a major role in your transition from addiction to sobriety as well as the cost of the programs.11. Fun activities - Inquire about group and individual activities that will promote socialization and sense of achievement like sports and similar leisure interest. 12. Foods served - This is essential especially if you are a vegetarian or your religion forbids some foods. 13. Physical exercises - Exercise is important to keep you fit and mentally alert. 14. Spirituality - It is believed that a person will easily recover from addiction with the development of spiritual consciousness. 15. Success rate - This will help you evaluate if the services of the treatment facility are effective.16. Case studies - Check the verity of the testimonials and ask for the opinions of its former clients to ascertain if the facility can really help you recover from substance dependence.17. Treatment center rules - It is better to know about the rules as early as possible to avoid regrets in the end especially when it comes to financial matters. 18. Disciplinary measures for violating rules - Be sure to ask about punishment/penalty for violations of the rehab's rules before you enroll. 19. Room accommodations - Some people prefer to be alone and some want to be in a group. Check their room policies and the cost for your preference. 20. Accreditation by JCAHO or CARF - These are two national organizations that carry a lot of weight within the recovery industry. Treatment centers with these accreditations are a big plus.

It is difficult to put a paradigm in finding a treatment center that will exactly meet all your expectations. But the above-mentioned concerns will help you find a rehab that will give you the best programs and living conditions for a! comfort able recovery. The most important advice we can give it to ask plenty of questions before making a selection.

The Many Benefits Of Meditation In Improving Oneself

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Article by Mark Vaccaro

When it comes to improving oneself, there are just a lot of different methods. However, meditation and self improvement still go hand in hand in helping people develop certain aspects of their lives. These aspects can pertain to any area that needs improvement such as health, thinking, body, etc.

Perhaps, the greatest aspect of meditation is that is does not require tons of money, years of training, or special equipment. Its techniques can be taught and learned by anyone who is willing.

Meditation is about clearing the mind and focusing on the aspects of life that need to be developed, healed, or solved. It is about thinking and finding a resolution for problems that have been around for a long period of time already. A person who undergoes meditation experiences something that helps him improve himself.

When one decides to meditate, it is recommended that he sits in a comfortable manner and focus his mind on a specific object. He should also breathe slowly, deliberately, and deeply. His object of focus can be a lighted candle, a flower, or anything that can capture his attention. It is strongly advised to avoid watching television or using the computer while meditating. Merely turning such appliances on can be very distracting.

One way to maintain focus is to seek guided meditations. These styles of meditation can help a person achieve his goals by helping him focus on personal development, positive thinking, and self improvement. These will also tackle with his health issues such as weight control, curing insomnia, and quitting smoking.

Soft and soothing music is usually played during meditation. It harmonizes with the voice that presents the meditation and helps the person meditating to focus on the words and leave his surrounding environment behind to go on the journey for self improvement.

A variety of meditation techniques are available for self improvement, yet finding the right one may take a long time.

One form of meditation is the autogenic form.! Basical ly, it allows a person to open a communication channel that links his conscious mind and super-conscious mind. This form makes use of imagery, feelings, and intuition to allow the person to achieve the goals that he has set.

Then, there is also Vipassana, another form of meditation that is ideal for self improvement. It uses breathing techniques and mainly focuses on the physical sensations within the body to reach goals. This form of meditation is frequently used for controlling and getting rid of negativity as a part of the self improvement process. Maintaining positive thinking and attitude is very helpful in meditating to attain desired results.

It is often said that prayer is a means to speak with God. Meditation, on the other hand, is regarded as a way to listen to God's directions. Indeed, it is one of the best practices that can help obtain peace of mind and soul. It is also a good way to accomplish goals and dreams. Meditation is such a great practice that can benefit everybody.

It is necessary to learn how to meditate for a better life

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 11:00 PM PDT

Article by paula blake

I will cover a lot of areas of meditation, it's benefits and some of the various meditation practices that you are able to start to do today. We will also take a have a look at a few of the more common esoteric practices that it is possible to use to intensify your experiences.Meditation is no longer considered to be only an Eastern discipline and is spreading all through the world at an amazing rate. Men and women are beginning to understand both the physical and mental benefits, and are using meditation to assist themselves to deal with the stresses and pressures of our quick paced modern society.

Inside the last decade, there has been many scientific studies about the rewards of meditation, primarily because of the wide availability and growing sophistication of today's modern day technological advances utilizing an array of brain-scanning techniques.

For example, scientists have lately discovered that soon after several months of intense meditation training the brain activity measured an important cortical alter inside the pleasure centers responsible for increased happiness. They have also noted that meditation can boost a persons perception nicely sufficient to assist them uncover details about their lives that they may otherwise have missed had they not been utilizing meditation..

It really is hard to choose up meditation from just reading an post, but I would like to share a few simple pointers about what meditation involves. Regardless of what type of meditation you follow, the fundamental shared principle is to quieten your thoughts and mind. We can sit in a chair for many hours, but, if thoughts continually pass by way of our mind then our meditation will probably be ineffective. Ultimately the aim is to have a mind free of charge of thoughts. It is in this inner silence that we can expertise a consciousness of actual peace.

At very first glance, men and women could find the idea of stopping thoughts really challenging. If you attempt sitting silent for an althou! gh, you are going to probably be inundated with thoughts. When giving meditation classes, the difficulty of controlling the thoughts can be a widespread encounter. Nonetheless, if you sincerely try, you are able to discover to decrease the power of thoughts over yourself.

These are some tips I suggest for controlling your thoughts:

You control your thoughts not the other way around. Constantly remember it is you who can decide which thoughts to pursue and which to reject. By no means feel a slave to your own thoughts, even if at times they seem effective.

Patience. Don't anticipate a silent mind right after the first few attempts. We have been thinking all our life; to alter a habit of a lifetime requires persistence and perseverance. Meditation, like any worthwhile activities demands dedicated and focused intensity.

Often determine in advance for how long you're going to meditate. When you do it "for even so lengthy you feel," you'll often uncover that the mind starts playing tricks on you; as opposed to settling down into present-moment awareness, you might grow to be distracted or bored or not-in-the-mood or one thing else that causes you to quit. This is all component of the resistance process-of how compulsive thinking keeps its grip on consciousness-which meditation assists to dissolve.

These practices will introduce you to a good quality of calmness and equanimity that you may have by no means prior to skilled. Further, by achieving this state of mind voluntarily, you are going to have increased your intimacy with, and understanding of, your own conscious processes. You'll really feel a lot more at home within your mind and body.

Lastly, it's helpful to don't forget that, at its essence, meditation isn't merely a practice or a technique, but a way of becoming. In certain, it entails being fully present with what you encounter, whatever those experiences may possibly be. To the extent that you're able to experience this state on a daily basis, your meditation practice ha! s been v ery successful, and you'll feel the resultant advantages of higher clarity, equanimity, and insight.

Discovering the benefits of yoga

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 10:00 PM PDT

Article by Na Finefrock

Discovering the benefits of yoga

Most people have this preconceived notion that yoga is only for the rich and famous. In fact, some people who are a little bit interested in yoga become discouraged even before they start with the discipline because they see it as difficult and very demanding.

Yoga may be viewed as some sort of mystical or exotic thing because of its origins in India. The word itself means to unite in the Indian language and so it does unite both body and spirit, both the physical and the mental.

Others see Yoga as a series of exercises maybe because of the asana but yoga is in reality a science that aims to unify the consciousness and subconscious of every human being in order for him to attain a higher level of existence, Yoga is really all about promoting good health and good mind to achieve happiness.

Blame it on the exotic attribute of yoga but there are people who consider it as a part of sorcery or black magic. Unable to understand the mantras as well as the asana that are common among yoga practitioners, people would just as easily judge yoga as something done to achieve magic or mysticism.

Unknown to them, yoga is a way of life for most people who have learned to adapt the discipline to their way of life. Some people equate yoga with diet or series of exercises which they think are way beyond the capacity of an ordinary man. But yoga can benefit any person no matter what his age or sex is.

The ignorance of the many could not be blamed on them because yoga has not really been promoted to the public during its ancient beginnings. The early yogins or yoga masters chose their disciples and followers and kept them at a minimum and this made yoga some kind of an ascetic thing. It took the Yoga Institute in Mumbai to make m ore people familiar with yoga way back in 1918.

The asana or poses identified with all types of yoga are not being executed just to make yoga take an esoteric form. Rather, the asana are very important in every yoga t! ype beca use they help in regulating the circulation of blood. Yoga is not just all about the mind acrobatics but it is basically science that seeks to balance physical as well as mental health. While modern medicine prescribes physical cleansing to patients including steam bathing and the likes, yoga masters ask their disciples to practice physical cleansing in every major part of the body like the nose, stomach, the major internal organs as well as the sexual organ.Other people may look at the asana as something difficult and tiresome but those who practice yoga will aver that the asana have the effect of relaxing their body and minds and ridding them of toxins that pervade the body and make it unhealthy.

The misconceptions about yoga may have come from the ancient philosophical concept of the discipline. The most known yoga types are Ashtanga, Hatha and Kundalini and all of these types provide the disciple with the inner and physical strength.

To get to know yoga, a person should imagine it as a discipline that does not only exercise and heal the muscle but also the soul. The discipline of yoga unifies the physical, mental and spiritual health of a being all at one time. A person who has mastered yoga is said to have achieved the highest form of relaxation that can never be possible for non-yoga practitioners.

The yoga postures can be difficult but constant practice makes perfect and daily execution of these postures can only make the person an expert in the poses after some time. Once the Hathayoga has been mastered the person can proceed to respiratory domination or breathing mastery.

When the person has gone as far as having mastery over his breathing then he can proceed to pratyahara or a technique which maximizes his power to relax and to visualize things until he becomes a master of meditation.

A student who has mastered all the basic requisites of yoga will be able to achieve a trance-like stage where he is said to have already achieved a higher level of consciousness. This ! is said to be the ultimate perfection and bliss. For any person as he becomes one with life.

For Meditation - To People Who Want To Meditate, But Find It Difficult

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 08:00 PM PDT

Article by Jeff Balagosa

As a sales professional, Mike does very well. His job as aninsurance agent is exciting and very stressful at the sametime. Because of this, his blood pressure climbed to anunhealthy level and requires medication to keep undercontrol. He's overweight, smokes, and drinks way too much. Little does he know, there's a way for him to get his stressunder control with very little effort. Meditation wouldgreatly benefit him. There are numerous benefits tomeditating. Some of the great advantages for meditationinclude enhancing your creativity and boosting your immunesystem. When your body becomes stressed, your brainreleases cortical, which takes a heavy toll on your body.

Focus on your breathing.

One of the easiest ways to get into a meditative state is tofocus on your breathing. Here's what you do. Put all yourawareness into the feeling of your breath's coolness goingin and the heat coming out. Feel your lungs expanding. While doing this, your mind cannot think about anything elsebut what you do at that very moment. You could practicallydo this everywhere, even while at work or while you drivehome from work.

Focus on your hand.

I read about an interesting way to meditate from the authorEckhart Tolle. He's the author that wrote the books, "ThePower of Now" and "A New Earth." This method requiressitting in a quiet area with your eyes closed. You thenhold out your hand and try to feel the "knowing" that yourhand exists, without the benefit of touching anything. Thefirst time I tried this, I became amazed with the result. It could literally feel the aliveness in my hand. Once youget better at doing this, you can move from your hand todifferent parts of your body. When your skill level gets tothe point that you can do this with your entire body, yourlevel of meditation will be incredibly deep and profound.

Focus on the empty space between words or sounds.

Many people find it hard to meditate where sound, but youcan use it to your advantage. The easiest sound to startpracticing! this to would be a slow and steady type of sound.Try using a metronome. A device that musicians use to makesure they're keeping up with a beat. You don't actuallyneed to go out and buy one you can find many websites thatinclude a digital metronome. Once you find one, just set itto a slow and steady pace. Focus on the blank soundsbetween the ticks. Doing this, puts your mind in a statewhere you focus on emptiness. It's a great way to meditate!

Focus on everything that his happening in the presentmoment.

It's as easy to do as the breathing technique. Whiletotally focused on the present moment you align yourselfwith source energy and in the flow with everything. Startby taking a walk in the park or on the street. Notice allthat's happening around you as much as possible. Hear andpay attention to the sounds of the cars, birds, and peopletalking around you. Feel the ground though your shoes. While in the present moment, all is well. Keep the past inthe past and the same with the future.

Take up yoga.

You'd find it surprising to know that body movement canactually induce a hypnotic and meditative state. Yoga worksby making you concentrate on your breath in positions thatnormally lie out of your comfort zone. This type ofphysical activity keeps your mind focused on what'shappening in the present moment. It's very difficult tothink about something else without falling out of some ofthese poses. A byproduct of yoga is that it's a greatworkout; it will also make you very physically fit overtime.

Use guided meditation and hypnosis CDs and MP3s.

Out of the methods for meditation I've shown, this is theonly one that will cost you any money. But for those havinga hard time with meditation, it's a small investment tomake. As guided meditation audios become more and morepopular, you can get them at great prices. Some of theaudios I've used cost me upwards of . Now you can getdownloads for less than ten bucks. And since technologygets more and more advanced, these audios can put you in amedita! tive sta te with a few minutes, no matter howdistracted your mind may get.

Like any other habit, meditation takes time to incorporateroutinely. It's best to write up a daily schedule of whenyou will conduct each meditation session. Don't get hung upon the length of time you need to set out for yourself, around 15 minutes equates to plenty of time to start out.Consistency is the key here, so keep at it. If you can'tfind the time to squeeze meditation into your life, trycutting something negative out of your life to free it up.You'll find it surprising how much time you can saveyourself by cutting out watching the nightly news. Besides, all that negative information you get will just heightenyour stress level anyway.

Choosing Your Type of Yoga Class

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 07:00 PM PDT

Article by Ryan Tan

When it comes to choosing a yoga class, it can be quite overwhelming at times. This is because you are spoilt for choices. Here are some of the more popular classes that students will normally opt to go for. The list includes Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin, Ashtanga, Power, Iyengar and Bikram Yoga. There are still many different forms of yoga available, but these are the more commonly practiced ones around the world.

First, let's talk about Hatha Yoga. Normally when people use the general term "Yoga", they tend to refer to Hatha Yoga. In other words, Hatha Yoga is one of the most popular forms of Yoga in the world. This type of yoga is good for beginners to start with as it is relatively slow-paced and gentle. The ultimate aim of Hatha Yoga is to unite the mind, body and spirit.

For Vinyasa Yoga, it provides students with more variety. In other words, no two classes are similar with the exception of the Sun Salutations. Vinyasa Yoga incorporates breathing with synchronised movements at a fast pace. The aim of Vinyasa Yoga is to improve one's balance and enhance their breathing.

When it comes to Yin Yoga, students are required to hold a certain pose for a longer period of time. This is to stretch the connective tissues around the joints. Based on that, it is a conducted at a much slower pace. Yin Yoga aims to increase one's endurance and improve their balance.

Ashtanga Yoga is probably one of the more intense and physically demanding forms of yoga. It is conducted at a fast pace and is based on a progressive set sequence of asanas, which synchronises with your breathing. Ashtanga Yoga provides you with a good workout and ultimately, improves your strength, stamina and flexibility.

Power Yoga actually falls under Ashtanga Yoga. It is actually a Western interpretation of Ashtanga Yoga, but it doesn't involve the same sequence as that of Ashtanga Yoga. However, it still does involve practicing a series of poses continually without stopping.

For students who prefer focusing on ! the prop er alignment and form of the body, Iyengar Yoga is suited for you. It is similar to Yin Yoga in the sense that it requires students to hold poses for longer periods before proceeding to the next movement. However, sometimes props such as blocks and straps are included in the workout. Ultimately, the aim of Iyengar Yoga is to improve one's body alignment.

Finally, Bikram Yoga or Hot Yoga is for those who prefer sweating it out in a hot room. In all, there is usually a sequence of 26 poses practiced. The purpose of the hot room is to help in loosening up one's muscles. Bikram Yoga helps one to sweat and cleanse the body of toxins.

Always remember that you do not need to limit yourself to just one type of yoga. If you've tried one type of yoga before and not liked it, try something else. It doesn't mean that just because one type of yoga doesn't suit you, the rest won't either. There is always a type of yoga for everyone!

Americans might live a little longer if they cut back on the amount of time they spend sitting down, a new study says.

Reducing the daily average time that people spend sitting to less than three hours would increase the U.S. life expectancy by two years, the study found. And reducing the time spent watching TV to less than 2 hours daily would increase life expectancy by 1.4 years.

The study adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that sitting itself is deadly. While previous studies have looked at the health risks to the individual, the new study examines the risk of sitting for the whole population, said study researcher Peter Katzmarzyk, of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La.

The research "elevates sedentary behavior as an important risk factor, similar to smoking and obesity," Katzmarzyk said.

Other studies have found our culture of sitting may be responsible for about 173,000 cases of cancer each year.

Because U.S. adults spend, on average, between 4.5 and five hours a day sitting down, a significant shift in the population's behavior would be needed to have an effect on life expectancy, Katzmarzyk said. This might be achieved through changes at the workplace, such as the use of standing desks, and by watching less TV, he said.

Katzmarzyk and colleagues analyzed information from five earlier studies involving more than 167,000 adults that looked at the link between sitting and risk of dying from any cause over the next four to 14 years. The researchers also collected information from U.S. surveys conducted during 2005-2006 and 2009-2010, to calculate the amount of time Americans spent watching TV and sitting down daily.

About 27 percent of deaths in the studies could be attributed to sitting, and 19 percent to television viewing, the researchers said.

The study adds to the evidence suggesting that "in addition to being concerned about physical activity behaviors, we need to be concerned also about sedentary behaviors," said Mark Tremblay, a director of research at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute, who was not involved in the study.

Because so many people sit for prolonged periods, the effect on the overall population is substantial, Tremblay said.

The researchers noted their study assumed a cause-effect link between sedentary behavior and risk of dying, which further research should validate, they said. In addition, the study relied on participants' own reports of sitting and TV watching time, which may not be entirely accurate.

The study is published online today (July 9) in the journal BMJ Open.

Pass it on:  Reducing sitting time to less than three hours a day may increase the U.S. life expectancy by two years, researchers estimate.
