My girls were always good eaters (I think they took after their mother in that respect), so I never had to worry much about them getting enough calories, I just had to worry about feeding them the right kind of calories.

I was on guard during breakfast, lunch and dinner, but sometimes snacking was a little difficult to control. I know it's hard to be the kid with an apple for a snack when everyone else has chocolate chip cookies. So, I did my best to balance sweet foods with nutritious ones.

One of my go-to snacks back then was a small box of raisins. Memories of my days of preparing school lunches came flooding back as I was reading about a study, which was funded by the California Raisin Marketing Board and presented this month at a nutrition conference in Canada. Researchers found that children who snacked on raisins felt full on fewer calories than children who snacked on chips, grapes or chocolate chip cookies. Additionally, the children who ate raisins ate 10 to 19 percent fewer calories throughout the day.

It's not the most glamorous snack out there, but raisins do deliver sweetness along with fiber and a little protein. Compared with most other snack foods, raisins are very low in sodium, which is definitely a good thing, and they're a good source of essential minerals, such as potassium, manganese and copper.

With all that goodness comes a caveat. I've heard raisins referred to as "nature's candy," probably because a large portion of their calories come from sugar. So, if you're going to snack on raisins, be sure to practice portion control (those mini boxes are good for that).

Raisins are good, but they aren't the only healthy snack in town. Here are a few of my other go-to favorites:

  • ¼ cup of dry roasted edamame:  This snack is packed with protein – about 14 grams, in fact! It also has about 7 grams of fiber, which will help keep you feeling full longer.
  • Peanut butter celery boats: Celery makes a great vessel for peanut or almond butter, which are loaded with fiber and nutrients. Add just a few raisins on top and you have the classic "ants on a log" snack that the kids will love.
  • Popcorn and parmesan cheese: Top your popcorn with just a bit of parmesan (no butter!) and you'll have a light and healthy snack, with just enough fiber to keep you feeling satisfied.

It is a great pleasure to the Thais that Her Majesty the Queen of Thailand has several times graced the Thai community of Southern California with her royal visits to Wat Thai of Los Angeles. Under this project, a number of professors and lecturers from the Faculty of Education of Chulalongkorn University will come to stay for some months in Los Angeles to conduct the summer educational activities at Wat Thai, teaching Thai language and culture to a class of 30-40 young Thai students who live in the United States. The teaching, which is planned to be experimental in this first year of the Project, will last from July through September 2527/1984.

In Chicago, the two monks were accommodated in a small apartment, a temporary residence where they stayed on for about ten months before moving to the more permanent site of the Temple. The apartment which consisted of only one and, later, two rooms was far too small as it had to be used multipurposely as a living room, bedroom, dining room, office, place of worship and for chanting services, place for holding merit-making ceremonies, for printing work and so on. It was a kind of life that involved tolerance and forbearance, and exemplified the monks' personal ability, personality and maturity. Their behavior brought the monks even more sympathy and cooperation from the people. Then, the administration of The Thai Buddhist Center was transferred to the administrative authority of the monks and the Center was unofficially changed into a so-called Thai Buddhist Temple. Soon after that, on May 17, 2519/1976, The Thai Buddhist Center was legally registered with the Department of State of Illinois under the name of 'The Thai Buddhist Temple', marking the legal existence of the Temple.

Since the two monks took residence in Chicago and began their religious duties, the work towards erecting the Temple progressed relatively rapidly. Contributions of funds by devoted people in the first month of the monks' residence equalled the total amount of funds collected by the Center throughout the whole period of about two years of its existence. Iri spite of this, however, it was not until the end of the year 2519/1976 that the Temple could be located at its more permanent site. To be sure, the delay was not a matter only of financial problems, but of finding a suitable place and of securing the sale of the place. Meanwhile, the Temple still had to rely on the Japanese temple for a place to hold annual Buddhist holy day celebrations and Thai traditional festivals as it had previously done when it was the Center.

The new place, purchased from the Apostolic Assembly Church at the price of ,000 consists o! f a big church building which was turned into the main hall of the Temple; an apartment building which was modified into monks' lodging, and a parking lot, all on a 7,556 square-foot plot of land. Since the Temple was moved there on December 23, 2519/1976, all activities of the Temple including annual celebrations and festivals were held and conducted within its premises. It should also be noted that, like Vajiradhammapadip Temple in New York, the funds for purchasing the site of the Temple were almost all collected from contributions by Thai people in the local area, no financial help having been sought from the motherland of Thailand. As the purchased buildings were old with many worn-out parts, much time and a large sum of money were spent on repair work and improvement.

The Thai name of the Temple, 'Wat Dhammaram', is an honorary name granted by His Holiness the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand as a shorter alternative for the longer one of 'Wat Voradhamdhityaram' which he himself conferred on the Temple some time before.

The Theravada school of Buddhism is based on the teachings of Lord Buddha that accentuate the cause of sorrow and the way to escape. Buddhists believe that suffering is caused by intense desire. So the abolition of desire leads to a state of non suffering and non existence called "Nirvana". Thais' belief is anchored in the Buddhist doctrine as stated in a Thai proverb "if you do good you will obtain good; if you do evil you will obtain evil". This means the result of Karma signifies the evaluation of all life events and you will receive the consequences.

Making merit has been part of Thais' lifestyle for thousands of years. It denotes doing good things as declared in religious doctrine. Thais' mode of life, since their birth until their death, is fairly acquainted with making merit. They strongly believe they ought to frequently make merit which would bring them bliss, peaceful life and other good things.

For our purposes, meditation will be defined as a discipline in which the practitioner attempts to replace the reflexive thinking based on antecedents and other social conditioning with a deeper state of relaxation and awareness. This can be achieved, as described in our earlier definition, by thinking deeply, in silence.

The origins of meditation are closely tied to religious practices, mostly in the Buddhist religions native to India, as well as other forms of religion from all over the world. There are in existence several methods of meditation such as those developed from Buddhist religious practice, the Baha'i faith, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, and the Zen practices native to Japan; amongst many others. The modern day practice of meditation has been developed, however, through the efforts of several centers mostly in India such as that provided by Z Meditation.

To some people, meditation is looked upon as some obscure, even diabolical practice to be avoided. Yet some others view it as a mystical process reserved for those who are out of touch with reality. These are erroneous views. Meditation is something that can be, and should be practiced by everyone as the health benefits are immense. AMA Faults Guidelines for Mammograms & Prostate Cancer Test

CHICAGO — Recent recommendations on breast cancer and prostate cancer screening made by a government-appointed panel did not include enough input from experts in treating these cancers, doctors said here today (June 19).

The American Medical Association voted today to officially express concern over the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommendations on mammography and prostate specific antigen (PSA) testing.

"We have concerns that adequate input from specialists in these areas is not given or enlisted," when the task force makes its recommendations, said Dr. Robert Hughes, president of the Medical Society of the State of New York.

In 2009, the task force recommended women receive regular mammograms starting at age 50, going against the common practice of screening women beginning at age 40. And recently, the task force recommended against PSA testing for men altogether.

Hughes said that doctors' reactions to these recommendations have been "outrage, disappointment, frustration [and] sadness."

"They put undo emphasis on possible risks, without adequately emphasizing the obvious benefits of early screening," which include early diagnosis and treatment of cancer, Hughes said.

The task force has said the risks of screening, which include unnecessary tests and anxiety caused by false-positive results, do not outweigh their benefits. In addition, the task force said evidence shows men who receive prostate cancer screening do not live longer than men who don't receive screening.

Doctors here said the task force does not have enough input from specialists when making its recommendations.

The new AMA policy says the organizations should encourage task force "to implement procedures that allow for meaningful input on recommendation development from specialists and stakeholders in the topic area under study."

The task force does hold a comment period for their recommendations, but some doctors feel these periods are not enough, and do not adequately engage medical specialists societies, Hughes said.

There are many views today regarding the source of depression, those that involve an understanding of brain chemistry and of neuro-transmitters being among the more popular. Yet, there remains a vast gap between the current way of treating depression as an entity - clinically, chemically, and in terms of the body - and the way of treating depression as an energy related to consciousness. This energy moves from the energy bodies that each human being contains into the physical layer of our being, thus affecting our brain chemistry. The energy of our larger, spiritual self influences the way in which brain chemistry and neuro-transmitters work, and when changes are made to the flow or current, these can selectively improve the situation so that a new balance within the brain is achieved.

To see depression as related to consciousness is not as simple as saying if one thinks thoughts that are positive, then depression will vanish. It is more of a way of saying that the vital energy that surrounds the body in an etheric envelope and that infuses the body at all times, is itself infused by the higher vibrations of light that sustain the physical level of our being. When these higher vibrations are depleted, or when energy is blocked along channels that transfer fuel and sustenance to the cells of our body and to the brain cells in particular, then depression or any one of a number of other 'syndromes' can result.

In order to investigate this line of healing further, it is necessary to have an openness to understanding the spiritual dimensions of life and of our individual construction as spiritual beings. The fundamental premise of this perspective is that the physical layer of our being which gives rise to symptoms, is itself governed by energy, and energy is governed by consciousness. To put it slightly differently: consciousness gives rise to energy, and energy gives rise to physical functioning and patterning within the human body.

Why is it important to know this? Because all of s! uffering has a purpose, including the pain of depression. Every pain that we feel, every heartache that we are familiar with, is here as a teacher. For this reason, though we can desire to make ourselves more comfortable and more functional through the application of physical forms of treatment to physical problems, the underlying cause of depression will not be addressed this way; only the symptoms will be temporarily suspended or removed. This doesn't mean that these symptoms will return within a given lifetime. But without an alteration in consciousness they will eventually return, because the need for learning on a soul-level is the primary need, and because the symptoms of depression are purposeful and are meant to lead us in a new direction.

Though addressing depression physically will more likely have a quicker, more noticeable effect than holding depressive thoughts, feelings, and bodily experiences within a spiritual perspective, it is the latter which can create more permanent healing. This is not a reason to avoid physical forms of intervention, for these are needed and useful in many cases. But it is a reason to see beyond these forms to the broader issues involved, even while appreciating the holding and stabilizing process that modern and traditional medicine both make available, allowing us to regain enough balance, strength, and stability so that we can pursue the deeper question of what depression is really about.

The self and the Tathagata are the same

In the Aggivacchagotta Sutta (M. i. 487–488), the Buddha tells Vaccha that material shape, feeling, perception, habitual tendencies and consciousness, in short, the Five Aggregates, "have been got rid of by the Tathagata, cut off at the root, made like a plam-tree stump that can come to no further existence and is not liable to arise again in the future."

There are a few things we can learn from this particular passage.  First, like our self, the Tathagata is not to be identified with the Five Aggregates for "He is deep, immeasurable, unfathomable as is the great ocean."  To be sure, the aggregates are not like the Tathagata.  For one thing, the aggregates belong to Mara the Evil One.  They are impermanent.  They are also synonymous with suffering.  Accordingly, we should not identify with any aggregate as being who we really are reflecting, instead, "This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my self (na meso attâ)." 

We can also state without fear of being wrong, that the self or attâ and Tathagata are the same by implication.  Modern Buddhists might find this to be heretical, given their strong attraction towards materialism, but it is logically consistent to say the self and Tathagata are the same since both are not to be found in the sphere of the Five Aggregates.

Diabetes Risk Boosted by Psoriasis

People with psoriasis have a higher risk of Type 2 diabetes, regardless of their weight or eating habits, according to a new study.

Researchers found that people with mild psoriasis, a condition that causes skin irritation, had an 11 percent increased risk of Type 2 diabetes, and people with severe psoriasis had a 46 percent increased risk compared with people without psoriasis.

The findings suggest that 115,500 new cases of Type 2 diabetes diagnosed yearly worldwide are due to the increased risk of the condition linked with having psoriasis, according to the study.

"Patients with psoriasis should eat a healthy diet, get regular exercise and see their physician for routine preventative health screenings such as checks of blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar," said study author Dr. Joel Gelfand, an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania medical school.

Psoriasis affects 7.5 million Americans. People with psoriasis have thick, red patches of skin. They are also at an increased risk for diseases such as stroke and metabolic syndrome, and are more likely to die from cardiovascular disease, even if they are not overweight.

In both psoriasis and diabetes, chronic inflammation is present, and the conditions may share a common trigger.

The researchers looked at the diabetes rate in 108,000 people with psoriasis, and 431,000 people without psoriasis.

The results also showed that people with both psoriasis and diabetes benefit more from diabetes medications, compared with people who had only diabetes.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Thomas Lighting, of Elgin, Ill; part of Philips Consumer Luminaires Corporation, of Elgin, Ill., announced a voluntary recall of about 83,750 Thomas Lighting ceiling flush mount light fixtures.

Hazard: The fixture's socket wire insulation can degrade, leading to charged wires becoming exposed, causing electricity to pass to the metal canopy of the fixture. This poses a fire and electric shock hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Thomas Lighting has received 11 reports of defective fixtures which resulted in the home's Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) tripping. No injuries have been reported to the firm.

Description: This recall involves 28 different models of ceiling flush-mounted light fixtures manufactured between June 1, 2010 through November 25, 2010 with a diameter ranging from 7.5" to 13". All affected fixtures have a round base or canopy affixed to the ceiling and a dome- or cylindrical-shaped cover. The recalled fixtures have a variety of finishes including metal and/or clear or frosted glass and contain one, two or three light bulbs. Canopies are a range of colors including white, bronze, brass (gold) and nickel. Most models have a nib in the center of the dome cover in the same color as the canopy. Although the manufacturer's name, the fixture model number and production date can be found on a printed label on the ceiling-side of the fixture's metal canopy, consumers are advised not to remove the metal canopy from the ceiling in order to access this label.
