To a research psychologist with an interest in skill learning, meditation is missing something. Practicing any skill leads to improvement only if you can see what you are doing. In basketball for instance, shooting hoops in darkness would only waste time because knowledge of results is required for learning. The rule applies equally to meditation.

The Lotus position in the practice of Buddhism is something that is frequently misunderstood by those that do not understand what the position is designed to promote. For some, the Lotus position looks 'cool' and this is good enough for them to employ it in their meditative practice. However, there is more to the position than merely appearances. When we are of the mindset that the position is valuable based upon a cursory or surface value opinion, we run the risk of being able to dismiss it just as well. And honestly, it is best not to dismiss any components to Buddhist practice much less one as important as the Lotus position and its symbolism.

The key to understanding the lotus involves having a more in depth understanding of what it involves and entails. In Buddhism, there are additional complexities to examining the symbolism in any image. This is because Buddhism promotes notions of dualities and open-ended interpretations. Since Buddhism is rooted in what already exists within the self, it is common that interpretations of symbols are not clearly defined.

That is not to say there is no order to the symbolis! m found in Buddhism. Such an approach would be chaotic and sloppy - certainly those are two components far removed from what Buddhism represents. So, there are general characteristics the Lotus Flower represents.

The selection of the Lotus Flower in Buddhism derives from the fact it is a flower that is able to bloom while also simultaneously shedding its seeds. This ties very heavily to components of Buddhist karma since karma revolves around cause and effect. In some cases, there may be similarities between cause and effect and other scenarios can lead to the exact opposite reaction than what we initially intended. The key here is that one must understand karma will prove to be a salvation or an undoing depending upon your approach to life.

Lotus flowers are also known to float on water. In some instances, the water may be pristine and clear. In other instances, the water may be polluted or otherwise filthy. The symbolism of this should be considered fairly self-evident. The fact that the meditative position is based on the Lotus Flower is clearly not selected without a clear deliberation.

The filth of the water can represent the evil, dangers, and darker side of life. The Lotus Flower rises above and floats over such ugliness. The concept of meditating in the Lotus position presents the notion that a person can rise above such complexities and difficulties and maintain their composure and proper mindset. Of course, you can also maintain such composure under all environments whether which is the central theme of Buddhist practice - a calm mind that co-exists in all environments.

The Lotus Flower does not just float over dirty and murky water. It is born of vile and dirty mud but you would not know this based upon looking at such a beautiful flower. Regardless of the filth it comes from, the true nature of the Lotus Flower emerges from its dark origins and rises above it. You could consider this the ultimate form of enlightenment which is probably why the Lotus is so commonly reflected! in Budd hist symbolism and artwork.

You could say the true heart and essence of a human being is found in the symbolism of the Lotus. Considering the brilliance of the flower and what it represents, it is understandable how the imagery of the Lotus has proven so memorable throughout the ages.

Weight-Loss Surgery May Lead to Drinking Problems

People who've had weight-loss surgery may be at an increased risk for drinking problems, a new study suggests.

The study involved close to 2,000 people who had undergone some type of weight-loss surgery, including gastric bypass surgery and gastric banding.

The percentage of participants reporting symptoms of alcohol abuse increased from 7.6 percent before surgery, to 9.6 percent two years after surgery, the researchers said.

While this 2 percent increase may seem small, it could equate to more than 2,000 additional people in the United States who are abusing alcohol each year, the researchers said.

The study cannot answer why the surgery might increase the risk of alcohol abuse. But some research suggests weight loss surgery may change a person's sensitivity to alcohol, so less alcohol is required to become intoxicated, and a longer time is needed to reach a sober state (perhaps because the patient now is a lighter weight).

The findings suggest patients should be educated about the potential for such surgery to increase the risk of alcohol problems, and about how to drink safely after surgery, said study researcher Wendy King, an epidemiologist at the University of Pittsburgh.

Alcohol abuse symptoms

Doctors have heard anecdotes from patients, saying they've experienced changes in their alcohol sensitivity after the surgery, King said. A few studies have tried to determine if there is a link, but were limited because they were small and asked patients to remember their alcohol consumption levels before the surgery, King said.

In the new study, King and colleagues analyzed information from 1,400 weight-loss surgery patients who were surveyed before and after their surgery. Participants were asked questions to assess their alcohol use within the past year and level of alcohol dependence, including how many drinks they consumed on a typical drinking occasion, and whether it was hard to stop drinking after they started.

A year before weight-loss surgery, 106 patients had symptoms of alcohol abuse. A year after the surgery, that number went down to 101 patients. But two years after the surgery, the number increased to 133 patients, a significant difference when compared to the earlier years.

Patients who had a specific surgery — called the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass — were at a higher risk for developing symptoms of alcohol abuse. Among this group of patients, 7 percent had symptoms of alcohol abuse before the surgery, compared with 10.7 percent after the surgery.

From one addiction to another?

The study validates what many bariatric surgeons and clinical psychologists have seen in their practice, said Sunil Bhoyrul, a weight-loss surgeon at Olde Del Mar Surgical in La Jolla, Calif.

One hypothesis for the phenomenon is that patients "transfer" their addiction from food to something else, Bhoyrul said.

"Some patients have an addiction towards eating. When you do the surgery, you take away their ability to eat, and so they develop a new addiction," Bhoyrul said.

Doctors have seen bariatric surgery patients develop other types of addictions, including gambling disorders and sex addictions, Bhoyrul said.

All patients should receive a psychiatric evolution before bariatric surgery, so that doctors can attempt to identify those at high risk of developing a new addiction, Bhoyrul said.

The new study will be published June 20 in the Journal of the American Medical Association. It will be presented today (June 18) in San Diego at a conference for metabolism and bariatric surgery researchers.

There are many different styles or types of in the world, each one unique yes, yet each connected fully in the fabric of mind and body awareness.

As you read, you may find a style of you connect with, you may even connect with more than one yoga style. The styles of yoga are as varied and unique as flowers in a garden, yet each holds a beauty and wisdom.

Searching for yoga poses for beginners? I offer this to you, be mindful as you read that the poses aka asanas are similar in all yoga styles. What differs in them is the creative organization and philosophies. So the difference being different yoga practices, meditation, chants and or science behind structuring certain yoga poses together. He is a master at what he has learned and what he teaches. You are master too, you just have not become aware of that inside of yourself. Yet.

My answer to the question of why practice? Where else can you have deeply divine relationship with your own mind and body? My answer to that is in every moment, and thus my path of life as a meditation in mind body awareness. My favorite type of pathway is a yin ...which in my experience is a slower meditative practice of being profoundly present in my body.

When I slow down and become more still, I can unwind myself from the inside first..and then those inner unwindings ripple outward into my musc! les, tis sues, tendons, heart. This yin yoga is based in the principles of hatha yoga. This type of yoga can be practiced all the time, whether you are standing in line at the store, or sitting in lotus pose in a class. It is a form of meditation in the moment.

As I learned to develop a deeper loving relationship with myself through yoga and meditation, I learned that instruction comes from within in every moment. It's simply our level of inner awareness or inner consciousness that can bring us into the moment to be present in ourselves. It's also how yoga teachers direct their students into being in their bodies and observing their thoughts.

Yoga takes practice just like everything else. Therefore, yoga, no matter what style, is always a practice to be more aware, to be more present. How does my body feel in this moment, how much further do I want to go in this stretching of my tight hamstrings. How relaxed can I stay while sitting in this traffic jam.

The more I listened deeper inside myself the more quiet and relaxed I became. Then my pain, anxiety and unhappiness transformed into vibrancy, peace and ease in myself.The place to begin yoga is within you. It always has been and it always will be. Even when you are in a class watching a teacher and trying to get into and figure out the perfect yoga poses.

Are you truly aware in the moment, inside of yourself as to what your body is feeling and experiencing? Or are you outside of yourself trying to get somewhere else or to be someones else yoga pose? Are you able to stay focused and present in your body at work, at the gym, hanging out with friends? Yoga practice is not simply doing yoga poses for 1 hour. It's a life path. And the benefits are amazingly available for everyone.

The slower meditative yoga may not inspire everyone. Everyone can do yoga yes, but which yoga instruction you connect with is up to you. Listen to your heart as you read the different yoga styles and feel which one makes your heart feel light and at ease, tha! t's how you will know which yoga instruction you are drawn to.

If the entire human population stepped on a scale, the weight would be 316 million tons, or 632 billion pounds, a new study finds.

The overweight people in the world carry a total of 16 million tons of extra weight — that's the equivalent of 242 million normal-weight people. Obese people carry 3.8 million tons of extra weight, the equivalent of 56 million normal-weight people.

"Everyone accepts that population growth threatens global environmental sustainability — our study shows that population fatness is also a major threat," said study researcher Ian Roberts, of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

The energy requirement of any species depends not only on the number of individuals in its population, but also on its total mass: the more mass people in the world have, the higher their energy needs will be, the researchers said.

Roberts and colleagues used 2005 estimates of the world's population in their analysis. They also obtained information about the average body mass index (BMI) of people in each country, and calculated the percentage of the population that is overweight and obese.

The average body mass, globally, was 136 pounds (62 kilograms.) In North America, which has the highest average body mass of any continent, the number was 178 pounds (80.7 kg).

North America has only 6 percent of the world's population, but 34 percent all the human biomass in the world that is due to obesity, the researchers said. In contrast, Asia has 61 percent of the world's population, but only 13 percent of the world's biomass due to obesity.

If all countries had the same average BMI as the United States, the total human biomass would increase by 63 million tons (58 million metric tons), equivalent to the weight of of 473 million people, the researchers said.

The study is published today (June 17) in the journal BMC Public Health.

Shining Light on a Hotel Room's Dirtiest Things

Want to stay away from germs during your next hotel stay? Then don't turn on the TV or lights — new research shows that TV remotes and light switches are among the most contaminated items in hotel rooms.

Researchers from the University of Houston took bacteria samples from several items in hotel rooms in three regions of the United States. While the toilet and the sink were expected to have high levels of bacteria, researchers also found more surprising items with high contamination levels, such as the remote and the switch on the bedside lamp.

Hotel rooms "don't have to have it ready for surgery," said study researcher Jay Neal, a microbiologist at the University of Houston, but there certainly is room for improvement in their cleanliness.

The amount of bacteria on the remote may not mean that it's "any dirtier than at home, but there's a stranger factor" in a hotel room, said Neal, who oversaw the research performed primarily by student Katie Kirsh.

Housekeepers clean spend about 30 minutes cleaning each room, Kirsh said. If the researchers could pinpoint the most contaminated parts of the room, the cleaning process could be made more effective.

The highest levels of contamination were found in the maid's cleaning cart, specifically, on the mop and sponge. That's a problem because it means that bacteria are being carried from room to room, according to the researchers.

Such cross-contamination could be reduced, though, by replacing cleaning liquids during housekeeping shifts, they said.

The lowest levels of bacteria were found on the headboard, curtain rods and bathroom door handle.

The researchers tested for bacteria in general, and did a separate test for cloriform bacteria, which are found in feces and are more likely to cause illness.

Both tests showed that bacteria levels in hotel rooms were between 2  to 10 times higher than the levels accepted in hospitals.

The presence of bacteria's doesn't guarantee that people will get sick, but it makes it more likely.

The study was limited in that it was small — nine hotel rooms were tested in each of three states: Texas, Indiana and North Carolina.

The research was presented today (June 17) at microbiology researchers' conference in San Francisco.

Spirituality Moves You Away From Your True Self

When you try to be, or do a thing, what you are saying to the universe is that "I am not there yet," and it is this thought that keeps you from experiencing what you desire. By the law of attraction you can never be what you are trying to be.

It is the very same with the true nature of who you are. You are nothing experiencing "being" something. You already are what you think you are and your existence is a demonstration of the thought process which created you.

In the physical life you choose the different rolls or scripts you are playing. Trying to be spiritual is simply another script or play. You are spirit trying to find its way back to spirit. You are trying to define yourself by creating an illusional experience of one possibility of your existence.

From the second you awake into consciousness you recreate yourself in physical experience. While you were asleep you did not know yourself. When you awoke you started to put it all back together. I am awake, I am male, a spouse, father, employee that needs to stop thinking and get ready for work. Throughout the whole day you reaffirm your place in time and space and when you go to sleep again tonight you will have forgotten who you are. Everything you do, all day long, says this is me-this is who I am.

This is a false existence, an illusion and your ego requires this constant affirmation that it exists-it does not! The real you, the truth about who and what you are is what you were before you started thinking-before your mind gets involved.

To "be" you have to start from somewhere or nowhere. To be what you believe yourself to be right now-you started as nothing. So nothing is your true nature and everything else is made up. You cannot be nothing because nothing is not a state of being. However, from the knowledge of your true nature you can fully appreciate the illusion of what you now believe yourself to be.

From this understanding you will know nothing is all you will ever be and nothing is really al! l there is. You will also begin to understand that everything is nothing and nothing can not be created or destroyed. You will always exist in one form or the other.

The true magnificence and miracle of what you are is appreciated from this understanding. You will also understand that there is nothing you cannot be. You are everything. You are the creator and the created. You are the ego, tree, rock, sky, your friend, your enemy-you are all things which you experience. You are not one with the tree or sea, you are them. It is only within the illusion of your own consciousness you believe otherwise.

The reason you cannot find the creator, your god, the source, is because it is you. And you can never experience being these things while you are looking for them. You can never experience what you truly are, while you are "being" something.

This does not mean you should turn away from the illusion. "Being" is the whole purpose for being here. There simply is "nothing" you have to be, do, or say to know who you truly are. The physical life was created for purpose-your purpose. The knowledge or truth about who you really are gives greater meaning to your purpose and what you chose to experience before you started "being" it.

You come from nothing and you will go back to nothing, and in between you are nothing trying to experience being something. You are all there is and nothing. You are the expression of nothing. You do not go anywhere or be anything-you are all there is. "We" are not all one because there is no "we"-there is only the one.

When you know your true magnificence-you will experience being magnificent-you will know your awesome power and the true state of who you really are.

Robert Allan Monroe (October 30, 1915March 17, 1995) was an advertising executive from Virginia who became known for his research into altered consciousness. His 1971 book Journeys Out of the Body is credited with popularizing the term "out-of-body experience". In 1978 Monroe founded The Monroe Institute, which carried on his work after his death. He is also notable as one of the founders of the Jefferson Cable Corporation, the first cable company to cover central Virginia. According to his own account, while experimenting with sleep-learning in 1958 Monroe experienced an unusual phenomenon, which he described as sensations of paralysis and vibration accompanied by a bright light that appeared to be shining on him from a shallow angle. Monroe goes on to say that this occurred another nine times over the next six weeks, culminating in his first out-of-body experience. Monroe recorded his account in his 1971 book Journeys Out Of The Body and went on to become a prominent researcher in the field of human consciousness. Monroe later authored two more books, Far Journeys (1985) and Ultimate Journey (1994). Meditation Instruction: Step--Step Instructions to Teach You How to Meditate Correctly

Many people want to know how to meditate. They want a step-by-step example on how to meditate. So I'm going to "walk" you through a meditation step by step as you read this article.

You may want to take a moment and put on some soft soothing music. Music selection during meditation is very important. You do not want to play Bach, Mozart or Beethoven during meditation as songs from these composers actually increase brain activity and stimulate creativity. Make sure to pick calming music for your meditation.

Next it's important to not have any distractions. You must lock yourself in a quiet room and anticipate any "future" distractions. Let your family know that you are meditating and not to bother you. If there's an outside distraction going on like someone mowing their lawn, you will not be able to meditate. Alternatively, if you are on good terms with your neighbor you could ask him/her to not mow the lawn during your meditation.

Before starting to meditate you want to make sure you have correct meditation posture. Sit on the floor cross-legged. But here's where most people get it wrong. If you're right-handed, sit with your right leg on top and if you're left-handed, sit with your left leg on top. If you're ambidextrous, I'm not sure what to do. Now take your index finger and thumb and touch them together. Make sure to NOT use your middle finger. Using your middle finger hampers the meditation experience. When you close your eyes, make sure your eyeballs are pointing upward. Tilt your neck exactly ten degrees upward. You may want to get a protractor to make sure you have the exact angle. You can buy a cheap protractor atthe local store, or borrow one from your child. Do not have the neck tilting less or more than ten degrees.

Now that you've got correct meditation posture, start by breathing through your nose. Not your mouth. Obviously if you are stuffy, have a cold or allergies and cannot breathe through your nose, you won't be able to meditate. Wait until your nasal pas! sages ar e clear before attempting to meditate.

And here's the most important thing of all: Don't Think!

So by now you may have realized that "I'm pulling your leg." And I hope you take this in the light, playful way it was intended. But it's absolutely

laughable at some of the things people think they need to go through to meditate properly. You don't need to do any of the above. In fact, you can meditate in a crowded mall, meditate while standing and with your eyes open. You can meditate under any circumstance in any situation. You don't need special music. You don't need to lock yourself away in isolation!

Meditation is simply being fully present in the moment, and in that moment experiencing the truth of who you are beyond your mind, body, thoughts. I'm going to invite you to throw out all technical things you may have heard about meditation and to take moments throughout the day just to bask in the beauty of who you are!

Internet meditation

It almost goes without saying that prostrations and seated meditation don't work well on the Internet.  Both are very much physical practices.  The more pertinent question is, can meditation be taught on the Internet assuming that meditation or dhyâna is not really about sitting?  The answer is, of course, yes.

The point I wish to make is that real meditation is not posture dependent which means that learning about it on the Internet is always possible.  We have to keep in mind that meditation is a hyper subtle introspective process by means of which we leave the mundane territory of our all-too-human mental world and enter into the transcendent, connecting with true reality for the first time.  

In whatever way we decide to position our body, whether sitting or standing, doesn't make the transcendent more or less accessible to us.  It is naive to believe that sitting ramrod straight on a zafu suddenly catapults us into the world of the Buddhas.  To sit, which in Sanskrit is nishad, can also mean to sink down, as in depth, or to repose.  Thus, zazen can mean, besides sitting, to repose or rest in dhyâna.

Incidentally, many of the enlightenment or satori stories found in Zen did not take place during seated meditation in the example of Hsiang-yen (d. 898) who, when sweeping the ground, caused a pebble to strike some bamboo. He awakened upon hearing the sound.  Certainly there are other like accounts such as Hakuin's and even before him, Hui-neng's awakening.

Unfortunately, there are other problems with disseminating Buddhism on the Internet but learning about dhyâna is not one of the main ones.
