Our mind is the biggest underrated tool to success. It is the most powerful thing that actually existed however it does not get plenty of credit simply because it's something that has been working in the backstage. If you think that mind power is what makes everything feasible, you are on the right track.Mind power is what makes up Einstein and all other history's greats. The formula, the imagination, the invention and creation all that starts with them using their mind power to its fullest. How powerful can our minds be? I don't know and I do not think there's an instrument that can ever measure it. We might have some assessments like IQ tests which can measure one's intelligence as in contrast to others, but it does not in itself measure mind power. How can it help us accomplish what we want? First, it's what allows us to visualize our brains functions magnificently in visualizing precisely what we want to attain or have. It is our imagination that reveals to us what we want, how we can realize it, or when we can quite possibly have it. Second, our mind directs and controls our actions. Ever heard of you are what you say? Well, what you say is a product of what you think. So if your thoughts are directed towards accomplishment, then, your actions will follow towards that route. You can not be thinking of wanting to have money when you just sit around whole day and wait for it to fall in your lap because if you are really thinking of wanting to have money, you wouldn't be sitting there in the first place.Third, there is a way to sustain that thought of achieving what we want. It's not just a one-time offer. Human nature suggests that gradually we get frustrated or disappointed. While we have no control on natural phenomenon's, we have control on how our mind works and that includes removing all blockages that hinders or cripple our thought process. There is a science of how our mind's power can be used in its maximum. There are many factors that can block a clear thinking process which i! ncludes anxiety, tiredness, unhealthy life style, and so on. In order to think clearly, we can "condition" our minds through the help of tools like self hypnosis or brainwave entrainment.Nothing is impossible. Although it might just be a easy tagline for a popular clothing line, it is actually relevant in actual life. If you imagine that it's achievable, it is achievable. Creations and inventions, ideas and theories, do not stem from a stagnant and coward brain. It all came from the amazing brains of people who understood the extent of mind power.

The Tiny Guide to Being a Great Dad

Posted: 17 Jun 2012 10:00 AM PDT

Post written by Leo Babauta.

I am blessed with six wonderful children and a fantastic and lovely wife, and for this I am deeply grateful. But on a day like today, a lazy Sunday morning when my family is sleeping in and the soft light of the morning permeates the house, I reflect on what it's like to be a dad.

Not just a dad … a great dad. This is a height I don't always reach, but I believe I do inhabit that space sometimes. I'm a great dad, on my best days.

If you're curious about my thoughts, as a dad of 19 years that has included countless sleepless nights, endless answering of questions, thousands of nursery rhymes sung and horsey rides given, hundreds of thousands of words read in children's books, more than my share of wiping up spitup, poopie butts and much more … here is my offering to the world.

Don't worry, it's a fairly simple guide.

The Three Rules

There are only three things you need to do to be a great dad:

1. Be there. If you're in their lives, you rock. If you're there when they scrape their knee, lose their first tooth, need someone to cry to, need help with their school project, want a partner for playing house or hide-and-seek … you are already being a great dad. Be there, when they need you, and when they don't.

2. Love them. They will know you love them, if you love them fully. It will show in your smile, in your touch, in your good-morning hugs. But also tell them on a regular basis. Infuse all your dad actions with love.

3. Be present. It's great to be in the same room with them, but as much as you can afford to, be fully present with them. Shut off the mobile device, close the laptop, turn off the TV, and really pay attention. Listen to their long fragmented stories. Really watch when they want to show off their new wizard or ninja move.

That's it. That's all you need to be a great dad. Well, there are some bonus moves, but those are just extensions of the above three.

The Bonus Moves

If you want some specifics of how to do the above three rules, here are some ideas:

  1. Sing with them.
  2. Run around with them.
  3. Make believe with them.
  4. Read to them daily.
  5. Dance with them.
  6. Tell them corny jokes.
  7. Paint with them.
  8. Make videos where they are the star.
  9. Set a healthy example by being active and eating well.
  10. Show them how to be independent.
  11. Teach them critical thinking, rather than just obedience.
  12. Teach them how to teach themselves.
  13. Don't nag.
  14. Don't be overprotective.
  15. Show them you're proud of them.
  16. Let them make mistakes.
  17. When they get hurt, use that moment to teach them how to deal with pain.
  18. Show interest in what they're interested in, and don't make it seem trivial.
  19. Show them how to work passionately.
  20. Spend some quiet cuddly time with them.
  21. Make them pancakes with faces.
  22. Have Nerf dart gun fights.
  23. Play board games.
  24. Take them on hikes.
  25. Play sports with them.
  26. Show them how to use a knife.
  27. Be honest.
  28. Honor your commitments.
  29. Love your wife, and treat her with respect.
  30. Be compassionate to others, and them.
  31. Be happy with yourself.

Finding Time-Saving Yoga Studio Management Software

Posted: 17 Jun 2012 08:00 AM PDT

Article by Rena B. Courtney

Running and building up a yoga studio requires coordinating scheduling, marketing, accounting, class registration, class attendance, sales and credit card processing, inventory, payroll, staff management, documents, and so much more.

When you started teaching yoga, you wanted to teach yoga. Sure, you knew running a yoga studio or teaching classes involved administration, but perhaps running your yoga business is taking over your life.

Ask yourself:

How many software applications are you running to keep it all together? Are you using a fleet of spreadsheets?

The fact is there is some pretty cool software options available specifically designed for yoga studios that take care of all your yoga studio administration needs in a central, online location.

3 Fundamental Elements of A Great Yoga Studio Software Service:

Cloud computing capability (web-based software); and Comprehensive, all-in-one yoga software that centralizes all your yoga studio administration operations. Automation - the more the better. Typically this is easier with comprehensive, all-in-one software.

Cloud Computing Yoga Studio Management Software is Where It's At

Cloud computing is web-based software. You simply log-in to your account and manage your entire yoga studio on the Web. Stop with the downloads, installations, networking, and upgrades that plague desk-top software applications. Seriously consider putting your entire yoga studio software management needs on the cloud.

Centralizing Your Yoga Studio Software

Integrating separate pieces of software is a never-ending headache. When one application is upgraded, it then doesn't sync with other applications. What you get is a mish-mash of software that more often than not malfunctions. Instead of saving you time, you burn up time trying to get it all working together.

If you can, get yoga studio software that is comprehensive and meets all, or as much of your computing needs as possible.

Automation

T! he more you automate, the more time you save which lets you teach more or take more time off. The fact is, running a yoga studio is managing a large number of variables - students, staff, teachers, schedules, inventory, sales, etc. The goal is full classes and regular students. Automation helps you take care of the menial tasks so you can put your mind and time to activities you enjoy and that let you build your yoga business (and take a vacation).

Yoga Business Software Features to Look For

Not all yoga studios have the same needs. The remainder of this article sets out yoga studio software management features available. Go through them and see what it is you need.

Yoga Class Scheduling

Online class scheduling - this is an extremely customer-service friendly feature for your students. Consider the following functions you might want:

Wait-lists: let your students add their name to a waitlist. With software, save yourself the time of managing these lists. Let the software do the heaving lifting. Student self check-in: spare your students standing in line waiting for you. Let your students scan their ID card and get to class. You also get time to set up and prepare for class. Printable sign-in sheets: maybe you prefer physical sign-in sheets. Get software that offers a print option with sign-in templates. You can load the data later... or not. Equipment and room rental scheduling: do you rent out rooms and/or equipment? Why not automate the process and make it easy for your yoga clientele to book your rooms and equipment themselves. Recurring bookings: nothing builds a business like recurring customers. Make it easy for yoga students to book multiple classes and commit to your classes. Class attendance statistics: You only know how your business is going if you can measure results. Software that produces easy-to-read reports on class attendance statistics gives you tools at your finger-tips to assess your money-making classes and classes that may not be worth having.

Scheduli! ng Ease< /p>

Drag and drop functionality for booking is a real luxury. In fact, drag and drop anything is great. Make it easy for your clientele to book classes and appointments with you. On the Cloud (web-based): Not only does cloud computing save you networking costs, upgrade hassles, and installation nightmares, but you can access your entire yoga business anywhere. Multiple schedule views: daily, weekly, by name, service, gender and more. Birds-eye views of your schedule can be very handy when looking at the big picture. Color coding scheduling: sure, you must memorize the colors, but in time the colors will speed up your viewing of your schedules.

Yoga Studio Enrollment Options

Perhaps you offer more than just yoga classes. If so, look for yoga studio management software that has the flexibility to schedule all types of events such as:

Courses: still a popular yoga class structure - a series of classes building on concepts. Seminars / special events: do you ever have a speaker or teaching events? Make it easy for people to sign up and a breeze for you to manage the scheduling.

Plus software that enables:

Payment plan processing: yoga studios usually offer a variety of pricing packages. Make it easy to sell packages (without the hand-held calculator) by considering software that tabulates and accepts payment for yoga packages. Payment status information: every business has some customers who owe money. Yoga studios are no exception (generally). See at-a-glance who owes you money (and how much).

Payment Processing

Credit card integration. Some yoga software includes credit card processing "on the cloud" sparing you the hardware to pay for and set up. Link payments with services. This way you can produce financial statements any time to see the financial status of your business. Membership cards (i.e. swipe cards for signing in) and ID tag capability: Lose the paper and look professional with swipe cards enabling self-check in and much faster client tracking.

Onl ine Store for More Revenues

If you sell retail, why not create an online store? It's simple to do with the right yoga studio software. There is software that includes e-commerce capabilities so that not only can you track your in-studio retail sales, but you can actually start selling off your website.

In fact, you could consider partnering with yoga and health products suppliers to provide you products to sell on your online store. You can carry inventory or enter drop-shipping arrangements. The sky is the limit.

Moreover, with e-commerce, you can sell gift cards, yoga class packages, event tickets, etc.

Yoga Gift Card Selling Option

Gift cards are BIG business. Why not sell your own gift cards? You'll earn revenues and get more students in your yoga studio. Some yoga studio software has the capability to provide gift cards and program them with the software so that you can create them, sell them, and track usage. Other considerations when implementing gift cards for sale include:

Prepaid gift card options. Able to track student account balances. Loading gift cards with flexible amounts of money. Selling your gift cards in your studio and online.

Email Marketing for Your Yoga Studio

E-mail marketing can give your yoga business a huge boost. If you get yoga studio software, see if you can find a product that integrates with e-mail marketing software. This way you can leverage your yoga studio software contact database with your e-mail marketing rather than having separate databases. Trust me - when you can centralize, it's worth it.

Not only can you use e-mail marketing to get more students or encourage regular attendance, but you promote sales, encourage referrals, sell products and yoga packages, promote events, send out class reminders, and more.

When you centralize your yoga studio student database with e-mail marketing software, you can segment your students so that you send the most appropriate messages to each person.

For example! , if a s tudent signs up online for a class, you can automate reminder class messages. This way you improve your class attendance, and in a worst case scenario, if the student can't attend, they'll be reminded to remove their name off the schedule opening up a spot for the wait list.

Then your e-mail system will produce an e-mail to the wait list alerting them to the open spot. Imagine doing all this manually. Automation is key.

Yoga Studio Inventory Tracking

If you sell retail, tracking inventory digitally can save you a lot of time. However, you need software that tracks the stocking and sale of items. Moreover, if you get software that includes inventory tracking, look for the capability to track in-store and online sales.

Again, this goes toward centralizing your operation. By tracking inventory with your yoga studio management software, you'll integrate inventory with sales which lets you produce up-to-date financial reports... not to mention save you time syncing inventory with sales and re-ordering.

Yoga Student Account Management

When you use cloud software, you can create accounts for all of your students - so both you and they can log-in to their accounts. This way you and your students can track purchases, their profile, class attendance, referrals, etc. This is very convenient for you and your students.

Liability: What about the dreaded waivers. Necessary, but not a lot of fun. If you let students sign up online, be sure you offer an e-waiver for them to agree to. This too is available with some yoga studio software.

YogaStudio Staff Management

Whether you love managing staff or not, consider saving yourself time and the ability to manage your staff "on the cloud". Some yoga studio software enables you to do some or all of the following features:

A staff dashboard portal where you can send instructions to staff and to-do items. Individual staff log-in accounts for each staff member. Permission levels to various portals of y! our soft ware. Again, this is where centralization works for you big time. Staff scheduling - lose the monthly printouts and create staff schedules online where your entire staff can access it anytime from anywhere. Scheduling staff with software is much more convenient than on paper. Beside, how often does the schedule change in a month? Save yourself a few erasers.

Look for Payroll Management

Do you know how much you're paying out in wages, commissions, fees, etc.? It's not so easy to track with a yoga studio business given the variety of remuneration options yoga teachers opt for. There's hourly, commissions, flat rates, and combinations of these payment options.

Again, a quality yoga software product will track all your pay-rates for all your staff - no matter how complicated. It makes tallying the amount you owe easy.

Take for example, a yoga teacher that earns a flat rate plus a per student rate after a class attendance threshold is met. Okay, one class with one teacher isn't too hard to track, but imagine 30 classes and 5 teachers.

It gets complicated. Look for software that will track and tally all of this for you - all calculated with the swipe cards issued to your yoga students (if you opt for swipe cards - now you're starting to see how beneficial swipe cards can be).

Another payroll feature to look for is a punch clock for hourly employees. I'm not talking about a wall-mounted contraption. I'm talking about staff being able to quickly log into the cloud software and entering start and stop times at the touch of a button.

Finally, you want to be able to export all this payroll data into your accounting software saving you reconciliation hassles come tax time (and saving you lots of money in accounting fees).

Track and Measure - Look for Reporting Capability

You won't know where your business is going if you don't know where it's been and where it's at. This boils down to the financials - but not just the usual income statement, balance sheet, and ! cash flo w statement.

I'm talking about in-depth class attendance, payroll costs, number of students per yoga teacher, yoga student and employee retention rates, no shows, product returns, and sales figures (past, present and forecasts) - to name a few reporting capabilities to look for.

Scalability - Get Software that's Priced to Your Studio Size and Needs

Okay, not every yoga studio wants to expand and build a huge business. That's why yoga software that scales is key. What I mean by this is yoga software that accommodates both small and huge yoga studios - and is priced according to need.

Look for software that offers different pricing packages so you can get a software package that serves your business as is - but has the capability to accommodate your growth - if that's what you do with your studio.

Is my body eternal?

Posted: 17 Jun 2012 08:00 AM PDT

Eternalism in Buddhism (shâshvata) is not meant to suggest that the Buddha denied the self or atman.  In plain, words, eternalism is not just belief in a self or atman.  More specifically, an eternalist is one who believes that the Five Aggregates (khandhas/skandha) are eternal.  For example, an eternalist believes the first aggregate, material form or rupa, is the self and the world, both of which are eternal.  This passage clarifies eternalism.

"They declare material form to be the self and the world, stating such to be not only the self and the world but also eternal; they declare sensation ... perception ... the formations ... consciousness to be the self and the world, stating such to be not only the self and the world but also eternal" (trans. Masefiled, The Udana Commentary, p. 882).

This is not a rejection of self, not in the context of how we are rightly to regard our self and the Five Aggregates.  Above all, the Buddha doesn't want us to believe that our self is an aggregate.  As he teaches, all the Five Aggregates are, in fact, not the self or in Pali, anattâ.

Monks, form is not the self (anattâ).  What is not the self should be see as it really is with correct wisdom thus:  'This is not mine, this I am not, this is not my self (attâ).'  Feeling is not the self ... Perception is not the self ... Habitual tendencies are not the self ... Consciousness is not the self.  What is not the self should be seen as it really is with correct wisdom:  'This is not mine, this I am not, this is not my  self'" (S. iii. 22-23).

The eternalist rejects this.  For the eternalist, form is the self or atman including the world both being eternal.  The eternalist is really saying. in regards to the aggregates, this is mine, I am this, this is my self.  This is much different from the usual spin of some Buddhists who want their followers to believe the Buddha denied the self calling those who believed in the self, eternalists.  It is not that simple.  The Buddha's teaching was against those who believed the self was the Five Aggregates and those who believed there is no self or nattha attâ, who were the annihilationists.

Can Yoga Help You Live Better and Healthier?

Posted: 17 Jun 2012 07:00 AM PDT

Article by RC Walker

Yoga literally means union. It is a spiritual practice the goal of which is to unite the human being with the spiritual center. It is not a religion. Yogis (male) and Yoginis (female) practice yoga in order to uplift, purify and enlighten.

There are many benefits associated with the practice of yoga including a calm peaceful mind, strong flexible body and stamina. The health benefits attributed to this age old system developed in Central Asia are numerous as it specifically targets the nervous system, endocrine system, cardiovascular system and musculo-skeletal system.

By finding the right styles of yoga, and the right instructor(s), you can greatly improve your fitness level and well being overall. The list below and the brief descriptions provided will help you on your journey.

Anusara Anusara Yoga, created by John Friend, is a modern school of hatha yoga grounded in the Tantric philosophy of intrinsic goodness.  Called heart-oriented, this style of yoga integrates the celebration of the heart, universal principles of alignment and energetic asanas.

AshtangaA traditional style of yoga developed by K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India and is intended to heal the body through a dynamic series of postures, each building on the previous. Ashtanga yoga is meant for everybody and it is best to learn from a qualified teacher.

BikramBikram Choudhury's yoga is hot, hot, hot, so be prepared to sweat, sweat, sweat. In class, they crank the thermostat up high, then perform a series of 26 asanas, sometimes twice, that is designed to "scientifically" warm and stretch muscles, ligaments and tendons in the order in which they should be stretched. Founder Bikram Choudhury studied yoga with Bishnu Ghosh, brother of Paramahansa Yogananda.

IntegralDeveloped by Swami Satchidananda, the man who taught the crowds at the original Woodstock to chant "Om," Integral classes put almost as much emphasis ! on prana yama and meditation as they do on postures. Integral yoga is used by Dr. Dean Ornish in his groundbreaking work on reversing heart disease.

IyengarEver think standing was just a matter of keeping your body on top of your legs? It's hard to appreciate how involved a simple thing like just standing can be, how much concentration and how many subtle movements and adjustments it takes, until you take an Iyengar yoga class. Of course, the point is that you're not just standing. You're doing Tadasana, Mountain pose, and in yoga in the style of B.K.S. Iyengar, Tadasana is an active pose. B.K.S. Iyengar is one of the best-known yoga teachers and the creator of one of the most popular styles of yoga in the world. His style of yoga is noted for great attention to detail and the precise alignment of postures, as well as the use of props such as blocks and belts. No doubt part of Iyengar's success is due to the quality of teachers, who must complete a rigorous 2-5 year training program for certification.

Kids YogaFor kids, Yoga helps to counteract the everyday pressures of school, busy schedules and the incessant bombardment of technology in their lives. Through Yoga, kids learn relaxation, inner fulfillment, self esteem and body awareness in a setting that non competitive and compassionate.

Children derive enormous benefits from yoga. Physically, it enhances their flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. In addition, their concentration and sense of calmness and relaxation improves. Doing yoga, children exercise, play, connect more deeply with the inner self, and develop an intimate relationship with the natural world that surrounds them. Yoga brings that marvelous inner light that all children have to the surface.

When yogis developed the asanas many thousands of years ago, they still lived close to the natural world and used animals and plants for inspiration—the sting of a scorpion, the grace of a swa! n, the g rounded stature of a tree. When children imitate the movements and sounds of nature, they have a chance to get inside another being and imagine taking on its qualities. When they assume the pose of the lion (Simhasana) for example, they experience not only the power and behavior of the lion, but also their own sense of power: when to be aggressive, when to retreat. The physical movements introduce kids to yoga's true meaning: union, expression, and honor for oneself and one's part in the delicate web of life.

KripaluCalled the yoga of consciousness, Kripalu puts great emphasis on proper breath, alignment, coordinating breath and movement, and "honoring the wisdom of the body" -- you work according to the limits of your individual flexibility and strength. Alignment follows awareness. Students learn to focus on the physical and psychological reactions caused by various postures to develop their awareness of mind, body, emotion and spirit. There are three stages in Kripalu yoga. Stage One focuses on learning the postures and exploring your bodies abilities. Stage Two involves holding the postures for an extended time, developing concentration and inner awareness. Stage Three is like a meditation in motion in which the movement from one posture to another arises unconsciously and spontaneously.

KundaliniKundalini yoga in the tradition of Yogi Bhajan, who brought the style to the West in 1969. Before that time it was only taught in a master to student lineage and was known only by dedicated disciples of the master. It focuses on the controlled release of Kundalini energy. The practice involves classic poses, breath, coordination of breath and movement, meditation.

MeditationMeditation is a self-directed or guided practice for relaxing the body and calming the mind. Most meditative techniques have come to the West from Eastern religious practices, particularly India, China, and Japan, but can be found i! n all cu ltures of the world. Until recently, the primary purpose of meditation has been religious, although its health benefits have long been recognized. It is now being further explored as a way of reducing stress on both mind and body. Studies have found that regular meditation can reduce healthcare use; increase longevity and quality of life; reduce chronic pain; reduce anxiety; reduce high blood pressure; reduce serum cholesterol level; reduce substance abuse; increase intelligence-related measures; reduce post-traumatic stress syndrome in Vietnam veterans; and lower blood cortisol levels initially brought on by stress.

PrenatalA prenatal Yoga practice is similar to a typical Yoga practice, combining Yoga poses, breathing and meditation. While there are some Yoga poses that you should not attempt while pregnant, most are safe during pregnancy. When combined with cardiovascular exercise, Yoga helps pregnant women gain an appropriate amount of weight and stay strong and limber. You can practice prenatal Yoga throughout pregnancy, from the first trimester right up into early labor. Practicing prenatal Yoga will help ease back and leg pain as well as reduce swelling and insomnia during pregnancy. Through deep breathing and relaxation, a prenatal Yoga practice can also help reduce anxiety and stress before and during labor. By practicing prenatal yoga, you can peacefully tune in to the changes happening in your body.

RestorativePassive yoga poses lasting up to 20 minutes, supported by pillows, bolsters and folded blankets. This style is meant to encourage relaxation via the release of tension in the muscles and spine.

SivanandaSivananda is one of the world's largest schools of yoga. Developed by Vishnudevananda and named for his teacher, Sivananda yoga follows a set structure that includes pranayama, classic asanas, and relaxation. Vishnu-devananda wrote one of the contemporary yoga clas! sics, Th e Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga. First published in 1960, the book is still one of the best introductions to yoga available.

Traditional/Hatha YogaThe most widely practiced form of yoga in America. It is the branch of yoga which concentrates on physical health and mental well-being. Hatha yoga uses bodily postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation (dyana) with the goal of bringing about a sound, healthy body and a clear, peaceful mind. There are nearly 200 hatha yoga postures, with hundreds of variations, which work to make the spine supple and to promote circulation in all the organs, glands, and tissues. Hatha yoga postures also stretch and align the body, promoting balance and flexibility.

TriYogaTriYoga is a complete yoga method. The inspiration and guidance for the TriYoga Flows comes from yogini Kali Ray's direct experience of kriyavati (kundalini manifesting on the plane of hatha yoga). In the TriYoga Flows, breath and focus are united with flowing and sustained postures in systematized series. Since the method is systematic, students can progress from Basics to Level 1 and then to subsequent levels as they increase their flexibility, strength, endurance and knowledge. Through sustained awareness on all aspects of the practice, the inner flow naturally emerges. This trinity practice is by the nature of its origin, deeply meditative and transformative.

YinYin Yoga classes focus on the skeletal system and soft tissue of the body. Whereas other yoga styles are heatinducing and focus on the strength and flexibility of muscles, yin yoga aims to stretch soft tissue and activate the meridian system hidden within our connective tissue. The majority of yin positions are sitting or reclining, but there are some active 'yang' style poses in the yin tradition. Yin poses are held from 3-5 minutes as connective tissue is not as easily manipulated as muscle. Yin Yoga rehabilitates a! nd stren gthens connective joint tissue. This style of yoga is especially important for people who push their bodies with things like cycling, running, tennis, power yoga and other sports. It is a quiet, meditative practice that requires surrender.

Not knowing how near the Truth is, people seek it far away

Posted: 17 Jun 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Some years ago I noticed an odd thing; a lot of the Buddhist Spiritualitys I knew (including myself) didn't talk much about getting enlightened. We didn't talk much about what, specifically, we were doing in order to get enlightened. We didn't talk much about what enlightenment was. And this was not just my impression. I asked other people whether this was what was going on, and they all agreed: enlightenment was not on our radar. And this is very odd, since the only reason that Buddhism exists is to help get us enlightened. The Dharma is nothing but the Way to enlightenment. And it seemed few of us were interested in going all the Way. So what were we interested in?

When think about what we're doing in our Buddhist Spirituality practice, we often think in worldly terms. We think about becoming a better person, about being kinder and more content. We think about how the Dharma can help us with specific problems we have. We think about being happier. These are all very good aims, and I'm not going to knock them. But Buddhism's about much more than becoming more positive. It's about transforming, on a very deep level, the way we see the world.

So I made it a project to be more concerned with enlightenment and how to get there. I made a point to make this concern more central in my life, to reflect on what enlightenment means, and what I should be doing to get there. And that brings us on to insight meditation, or vipassana. Vipassana is the next step beyond being more positive, which is a samatha activity. Vipassana is the practice of looking closely at your experience in order to recognize that everything constituting that experience is constantly changing. This what we call the "mark" or impermanence, or anicca. When we recognize the impermanence of our experiences, on deeper and deeper levels, this leads to us recognizing that there's nothing in our experience worth grasping on to; after all, if our experiences are all constantly changing, then none of them can be the basis of lasting happiness. That's the mark of unsatisfactoriness, or dukkha. And an awareness of impermanence, applied to ourselves, drums in the fact that there is no permanent self here to do any grasping. This is the mark of anatta, or not-self. These are the three marks. This is what vipassana is about. It's about recognizing these three marks. It's not just about intellectually understanding them, although some intellectual engagement is necessary, but about seeing their truth in our own experience.

Vipassana is an activity that we can do in any meditation practice. It's not a special kind of meditation. So we can do it in the mindfulness of breathing practice, the metta bhavana, or just sitting. There are practices in which vipassana is more explicit, however, such as the six element practice, but this isn't an exception. We could do the six element practice as a samatha (calming) practice, but as a matter of course we include insight reflections: "This is not me, this is not mine, I am not this."

We can do vipassana reflections outside of meditation as well — when walking, taking the bus, having a conversation, cooking — although activities in which there's some mental quiet are more conducive to this kind of reflection. And to reiterate an important point, vipassana is not opposed to samatha. What we're meant to do is to calm and concentrate the mind, and then to take that calm, focused mind, and apply it to investigating the existential issues of the three marks. Samatha and vipasssana are like two wings, and we need both if we want to go the way to enlightenment.

Not knowing how near the Truth is, people seek it far away.

Now, how far away is enlightenment? We generally think of it as being very remote, which is perhaps why we don't think about it very much. But as Hakuin said:

Not knowing how near the Truth is,
People seek it far away. What a pity!

I think there are a number of reasons why we think Enlightenment is far away, when it's actually close by — right under our noses, or even closer than that.

Some of the perspectives of the Mahāyāna don't help. In early days, when the Buddha's feet were walking India's dusty soil, people often got enlightened immediately. Many, many people seem to have had a radical shift of consciousness just upon hearing the Buddha speak for the first time. It just took a slight reorientation of the way they saw things, and bam! they were awakened. This didn't happen to everybody, of course. Obviously some people had to practice for years. But many of them became awakened in this lifetime. Now the later Mahāyāna tradition, starting from about 500 years after the Buddha, were keen to build up the status of the Buddha. Presumably they were playing the game of "our teacher is the best." So they built up the goal of Buddhism. Buddhist Spiritualitys were now seeking enlightenment for the sake of all sentient beings, not just in our world but throughout the entire universe. And achieving this task would take countless lifetimes. Countless lifetimes, needless to say, is a long time. Elevating the status of the Buddha and of enlightenment in this way may have been very inspiring, but it also made the goal seem very remote. And those ideas still linger and influence us.

It's interesting to note that although many contemporary schools call themselves Mahāyāna, few if any of them still emphasize these cosmic timescales. The Zen schools focus on awakening right here, right now. The Theravadin schools emphasize awakening in this life. The Pure Land schools are slightly different, because they emphasize awakening after death: we die and, through the grace of Amida Buddha, we are reborn in his Pure Land paradise, Sukhāvati, where we are assured enlightenment. So even there we're aiming for enlightenment just after this very lifetime — not countless lifetimes from now. The Tibetan schools, or at least most of them, emphasize the possibility of awakening in this life. I think we need to embrace the notion of enlightenment in this lifetime, and not be overly swayed by this Mahāyāna perspective.

Another reason we think of enlightenment as being far away is because of a lack of self-worth. We think we have so many problems. We're unworthy! We're often very aware of our flaws. And then what do we not know about ourselves? Freud gave us this idea what there's all this nastiness under the surface. I remember a scene from the comedy movie The Front Page where a Viennese Freudian psychoanalyst asks a condemned murderer about his childhood. The murderer replies that he had a perfectly normal childhood, to which the shrink replies, "I see. You wanted to kill your father and sleep with your mother." So this is quite literally what Freud thought a "normal" person was like — a incestuous parricide kept in check by the super-ego. We've been affected by these ideas and we fear that there is unknown emotional baggage holding us back from enlightenment.

And I think we fear enlightenment. Being fully enlightened would surely involve a big change. What would it be like? Would I be a different person? Would I still have my life. What about all my likes and dislikes? We like our attachments! We fear that there might in fact be so much change that enlightenment would be a kind of death. So this is scary. We might fear that we're going to lose ourselves, and our individuality. I remember having this thought once, that if Buddhas are all perfect, then are they all the same? They're clearly not, but we can fear that our personalities are going to be erased.

The models and language we use — even very traditional language and models — can be unhelpful. The Buddhist Spirituality tradition has tended to talk in terms of exalted states of consciousness. We think of the jhānas. There are these four jhānas, and most of us have only limited experience of these. And then the commentaries take another set of four meditative states — the formless spheres, or ayātanas, and pile them on top of the jhānas. So there's now this towering skyscraper that we might thing of as ever-more blissful states of consciousness, disappearing up into the sky. And we might think of enlightenment as being piled on top of all that. And here we are on the ground, or maybe, if we're lucky, on the first floor from time to time. If even the jhānas are hard to get into, then enlightenment must be quite literally unattainable for us!

But this way of looking at enlightenment is inaccurate. Enlightenment is not a meditative state similar to the jhānas. It's a way of looking at the world. We need some jhānic experience to prepare ourselves for having a breakthrough into insight, but we don't need to have experienced all of the jhānas to have insight, and we don't go through all the jhānas and find enlightenment awaiting us at the top. Enlightenment is more likely to happen at a time of crisis, or during a conversation, than during meditation. Many people, according to the Pāli scriptures, got enlightened when they were depressed and suicidal, or when they heard a teaching and had a "holy crap!" moment.

Another aspect of language that can mislead is when we talk about the "path" from saṃsāra to Nirvāṇa. There's nothing inherently wrong with this language, but we often take it too literally and slip into thinking that saṃsāra and Nirvāṇa are almost literally like separate places, geographically isolated from each other. We think of the path as disappearing somewhere over the horizon, vanishing goodness-knows where. And then we think that this isn't the place, this is not the life, in which we're going to get enlightened. We may think that on some level we have to move away from this life in order to get to this "place" called enlightenment.

But saṃsāra and Nirvāṇa are not separate places. They're not even places — they're states of mind. The way to nirvāna is by looking closely at your samsāric mind. It's not by getting away from where you are now, but by totally being where you are and getting to know that place intimately. We need to look at how we structure our experience into self and other. We need to question our assumptions and come to see how we misinterpret your experience. We need to look at things we think are permanent and come to see them as they are. We need to look at things we think are sources of lasting happiness and realize that actually they aren't, and can't be, sources of lasting happiness. We need to look at what we take to be a permanent and substantial self and to see that there's no self like that to be found.

This is the place where we get enlightened. Awakening is just a shift in perspective away. So I suggest adopting the perspective that awakening is not far, but is right here. And when you make that shift in perspective, one of the first things that's going to strike you is, "Why did it take me so long to see something so obvious?"

Spiritual Awakening: The Opening of the Way

Posted: 17 Jun 2012 05:00 AM PDT

Article by Julie Redstone

The arrival of a new level of spiritual awareness can be as gentle as a slight breeze, in fact, almost beneath the level of our noticing. It can come as a perception of what is not, rather than what is. For example, a pain in the heart that has been there for a long time can suddenly feel like it is off in the distance. Or a sense of anxiety that has traveled with us for a long time can suddenly be missing. The absence of what has been can be a signal, as much as anything else, that a new energy has entered the picture that is creating changed inner conditions, and this can be true even though its source is unknown and even though nothing special may have happened to bring it about.

Similarly, there may be subtle, unexplainable feelings of well-being - a noticeable absence of irritability concerning things that would have been distressing to us just a short while ago. Or, the presence of humor over things that previously did not at all seem funny. Or moments of unexplainable joy that have no external basis. These things, too, can signal the presence of a new vibration having entered the heart.

No one characteristic describes what an experience of spiritual reality is like since it is different for each person. Yet what happens, optimally, in each case, is a validation of the experience so that it can receive a place within our awareness that is hospitable, rather than being treated like an intruder or as a stranger who has come to the wrong house.

Behind the subtle movements of energy that can produce the effects which alter and transform us inside is God's light and love. The power of this love is such that it can penetrate even the most difficult and entrenched systems of belief or habit, and, when invited into an open heart, can create softness where there was only hardness before. This love does not come to us, today, because we sit in a church, temple, or mosque in order to pray, although these conditions can magnify the experience. It comes to us on the street, in our hom! es, whil e asleep, and in ordinary conversations with others that we might not have paid attention to otherwise. It comes because it is a time of light and love ascending upon the earth, and change is in the air.

In the presence of the new, the smaller self may feel reluctant to give credence to what is happening out of self-doubt or out of fear that it will go away. In the midst of such concerns, it is important to know that even if the new awareness diminishes or disappears entirely for a time, it can never entirely disappear, for what has been experienced once, is now and forever part of us. It will return to unfold the deeper reality of who we are, even if it appears to be absent for a while.

When the mind is surrendered sufficiently to allow something to take place that is beyond its control and beyond its measuring, and when the heart is open, then new experience can enter quietly like the sun piercing through mist on a summer morning, dispelling the vapors and creating a new vision that is more open - a vision that reveals a different reality behind the fog and mist.

The way that opens to spiritual reality is known to the soul. It is only to our smaller self that it appears unfamiliar. When heart and mind are willing, the doors of consciousness can open to embrace the new and can remain open to receive whatever the inflow of light and love will bring.

Mind Body Connection - An Integral Part Of Healing

Posted: 17 Jun 2012 03:00 AM PDT

Article by Robin Ive

There is a certain mind body connection that is an integral part of every healing process, and mind body healing is one of the most effective methods of recovering from any injury whether emotional or physical. The mind and body are incredibly closely connected, and there are thousands of cases where people were healed due to their determination to recover. The healing process is much quicker than depending entirely on traditional medication, and those looking to recover quickly will find that mind body connection will enable them to do so.

What is the Mind Body Connection?

Every person's body is controlled by their brain, and the brain is what helps the body to heal. Using the power of your mind to create positive energy is one of the best ways to speed up the healing process no matter what is happening. There are a number of illnesses and disorders that are caused by negative mindsets, stress, and negative emotions, such as:

Back painFatigueDiarrhea and constipationSexual problemsUpset stomachWeight loss or gainHigh blood pressureInsomnia

These are only a few of the problems caused by negative energy in your life, as the mind body connection is so strong that the negative energy can actually cause your brain to function poorly.

In order to harness the mind body healing power, you have to change your emotions and thoughts around to the positive side of things rather than dealing with only the negative. Here are some tips to help you put your mind body connection to work and use this healing power to help your body:

Find an outlet for your feelings and emotions. Pent up negative feelings and emotions are the cause of your pain or illness, so finding a way to get them off your chest will release your burdens.Attain a balance in your life. Don't just spend all of your time thinking and obsessing about your work or school problems, but take time off to enjoy life and bask in all the great things it has to offer you. Spending all your mental energy on the pro! blems wi ll simply cause your body to deteriorate, but using your mind body connection will help you to recover as you balance out your life.Develop your resilience that will enable you to recover from the problems you face.Relax your mind and your body, and let the healing energies of peace flow over your body. Taking the time to relax through meditation or being in nature will help your body to heal much more quickly.Take care of yourself, both physically and emotionally.About the Author

Sharp Shooters and Muscle Relaxants

Posted: 17 Jun 2012 02:00 AM PDT

Article by Noblitt Debro

For hundreds of years, sharpshooters and marksmen have been employed as strategic arsenals or belongings by means of quite a lot of armed forces and combating units. The facility to appropriately hit someone from a protracted distance has lengthy been regarded as one of the most fastest how one can put on down an enemy. This was supposedly confirmed real during the Combat of Agincourt in 1415 while the English longbow prevailed over the French armor. In what was to be probably the most decisive battle of the Hundred Years' Battle, Henry V of England together with 900 squaddies and 5,000 archers had been intercepted via French troops that allegedly outnumbered them three-to-one. Making excellent use of the terrain and strategic positioning of the longbowmen allowed the English to wallop the French army. Another more ancient armed struggle that used to be settled via the ability of the lengthy-range weapon was the legendary Combat of Thermopylae. In line with the debts of historian Herodotus, King Leonidas and three hundred Spartan warriors at the side of different non-Spartan volunteers, succumbed to a hail of Persian arrows but only after causing a heavy toll on Xerxes' minions over 3 days of bloody fighting.

On the other hand, the sharpshooter really got here into his own all through creation of up to date warfare. The 2d Global Conflict gave Russian sharpshooter Ivan Sidorenko the risk to make taking pictures historical past via registering 500 confirmed kills. As a separate entity some of the infantry all over the Global Warfare II, the sniper used to be in a position to establish his value as a strategic asset and mental weapon. As a substitute of quantity of fireplace and overwhelming drive, the sniper utilized stealth, high floor and terrain, and awesome intention to cause dread and panic that is enough to halt a whole platoon or battalion on its tracks.

The secure, extremely calculated purpose is the hallmark of a real sniper. With nerves of metal, a sniper can place a pinpoint ! shot on a nonetheless or shifting aim by way of bearing in mind the wind path, bullet deflection, goal distance, and a host of alternative components that have an effect on on whether a kill is made or not. Never a task for the weak and risky, the sniper continuously has to paintings on my own or with a spotter --- far from higher units of infantry or fire support. Usually, they employ camouflage and infiltration ways to get inside lethal vary of the target. After hours or even days of waiting in ambush, they make a brief, managed squeeze on a cause that successfully neutralizes a threat or target. One shot, one kill --- the motto of each sharpshooter price his rifle.

Preserving the rifle steady and one's eyes fastened on a scope underneath the extreme stipulations of warfare are, on the very least, extremely difficult abilities to master. While there is little that can be done about rifle recoil, the sniper will have to remain completely centered on the aim and his weapon. The usage of a tripod, the sniper can sweep on a variety or lock-on an objective the similar approach a leopard's unblinking eyes follow the actions of its prey ahead of making its attack. The slightest discrepancy or the minutest motion can cause an omit that alerts the target who can either flee the kill zone, or shot back on the basic path of sniper. However in the back of the historical past, mystique and fight debts that may mesmerize the uninitiated, lies another story.

Combat stipulations are merely unforgiving, the place even essentially the most extremely educated soldier can "lose a grip." In Vietnam, regular infantry and snipers had to combat with the hilly terrain where even the sturdiest tripod proved useless. To compensate, the U.S. army issued their snipers with provides of muscle relaxant medication.

Muscle relaxant medicine had been intended to help keep the sniper's arms and body as still as possible while taking aim, compensating for the lack of stabilization supplied via a tripod. In concept, one of the st! ronger m uscle relaxant medication given out may just also help the body absorb one of the most flinch from the shot. The basic idea was to provide the snipers a better likelihood of getting the job done in a single shot, eliminating the danger of missing the objective and alerting the enemy to their presence. The usage of a muscle relaxant is, in accordance to a couple experiences, nonetheless common apply in numerous battlefields today. This is in particular actual in desolate tract and jungle struggle scenarios, which can be theater of operations that regularly lack even, cast floor on which a sniper can stabilize and shoot from. The use of such medication is, then again, now not a modern practice. Some archaelogists and historians believe that medieval archers used explicit types of herbs that acted as natural muscle relaxants. Certainly, many ancient civilizations used a variet of plants as muscle relaxant medicine but conclusive evidence of the use via archers of those bygone eras of such herbal, plant-based relaxants has but to be unearthed. There's some justification to the conclusion that archers will require some sort of muscle relaxant, specifically on account of the stresses of the usage of one of the larger types of bow, however most experts consider that if there used to be this sort of apply, it might have been recorded through a reputable source.

At the present, muscle relaxant medication are in wide use in numerous army companies however it has yet to reach acceptability amongst legislation enforcement units. Using a muscle relaxant is lately now not observed as important among police snipers because the city environment slightly supplies plenty of strong ground. In contrast, a combat unit that may be sent to infiltrate a compound in a wooded area may most probably be assigned a muscle relaxant provide instead of a tripod --- which can best add extra load to an already again-breaking struggle percent or bergen. In lately's battlefronts --- using chemical substances to strengthen the executi! on of ar my motion comparable to sniping may has been thought to be a leap forward, but it surely nonetheless does cause moderate controversy in some circles.

A Spiritual View of Depression: Living With the Unknown

Posted: 17 Jun 2012 01:00 AM PDT

Article by Julie Redstone

There is never a time in life when things are not changing - when one view of reality does not give way before another, or one person whom we are connected with or another does not go through a shift that changes them, or a situation we find ourselves in turns out not to be what we expected it to be. There is no time of pause in life's ceaseless flow, however it may appear on the surface of things For even in the quiet times of peace, things that are of the future are being prepared, and the end of one phase is already on the horizon, waiting for the next phase to begin. This is the nature of life's ceaseless movement, and it is part of wisdom to learn how to move with it.

Ordinarily, when change that comes into view is positive, valuable, hoped for, and appreciated, there is little thought given to what will happen next because the immediacy of the delight, pleasure, or comfort taken in what is, is what we seek to immerse ourselves in. But when change brings with it illness, or loss, or limitation, or helplessness, or an end to what may have appeared to be a hoped-for possibility, then the question of what comes next is very much in the foreground of consciousness, since the heart's desire is to be free of limitation and pain, and the longing in the midst of either is always that there be a 'next' - a next phase, chapter, or situation in which the pain or limitation will be gone. Depression often occurs when this hoped for next chapter of life does not feel real or possible.

In the midst of flow, there is a need that beats within each human heart to find an anchorpoint, a place of steadiness that does not change, even if everything else does. This center that is changeless, that can be turned to when everything else is in flux, lives within each human being. It has been called many things, and is the feeling of an eternal Heart that beats inside - an experience of inner continuity, love, and lastingness that is 'I Am'. This 'I Am' is the deeper sense of one's existence that is ongoing! , eterna l, and part of something greater than oneself. It is a sense of beingness, love, purpose, knowing, that can be an anchorpoint in the sea of the unknown. Often, when one has drifted far away from this sense, it must be pursued in order to be found again, especially when adversity seems to be all around. Such a pursuit is a central reason, among others, to deepen one's spiritual life.

'I Am' is the affirmation of one's eternal being, of one's ongoing life and existence beyond any limitation. In the face of physical disability or handicap, it is the knowing of the perfection and limitlessness of one's deeper self. In the face of loss and the grief that follows, it is the feeling of one's wholeness. In the face of heartache of any kind, it is the awareness that joy is still possible and love is still possible because the foundations of both love and joy are inextricably woven into life itself.

Everywhere in life, things are moving, relationships are changing, disappointments are happening, letting go is required, and the sense of the unknown exists as an everpresent companion to each step that we take. In the midst of this, there is the Eternal presence saying, I am with you, I am you. It may be that the experience of inner stability and of unconquerable hope is difficult to locate at first, since the intensity of emotion, and especially that of depression, can cover any other feeling, However, knowing that there is a part of the self that is untouched by the circumstances of one's life and that that part of the self is accessible, is a reason to strive to reach it, to search in every way possible for the path to find it. This is the nature of spiritual seeking everywhere, and in the presence of the unknown, it is the basis for moving past fear and sorrow into a new relationship with life.

Such movement can come through the beginning of a spiritual practice whose purpose is to help locate and create an experience of this eternal center. There is no one way to go about this, for the paths to! truth a re many and need to correspond to a person's own preferences and predilections. Nevertheless, the signpost that such a path is useful is the sense of upliftment and peace that it brings - the inner quiet and stability that creates a knowing of being whole and held in the midst of whatever else may be going on. No matter what feelings are present on the emotional level, there is a level beneath these feelings that remains always true, always present. To seek it with a whole heart is to pursue wisdom. To find it is to experience truth.

Achieve Younger Looking Skin with Wrinkle Reduction Treatments

Posted: 16 Jun 2012 09:00 PM PDT

Article by Greyson Hamilton

Wrinkles are the natural reaction to an ageing skin. Wrinkles appear on the face, hands, and other body parts as the body stops producing new collagen and regeneration of new skin cells. Some of the key reasons of occurrence of wrinkles are the genetic factors associated with ageing, sun damage, diet and mental health. A person's cellular system gets slower with age. When the skin cells lose its elasticity, it becomes slack thus forming deeper wrinkles. The skin loses its firmness thus resulting in formation of wrinkles in different parts of the body.

Before understanding the process of wrinkle reduction, it is advisable to understand the reasons for their occurrence. Some of the major factors are sunlight (this includes the UVA and UVB rays of the sun), free radicals, hormones and gravity. Sometimes wrinkles also appear due to mental stress hence wrinkle reduction has become one of the key topics associated with youthful skin and anti ageing.

Understanding some of the different wrinkle reduction procedures can help you to decide which ones you should pursue.

Face peel, also known as chemical peel is one of the prime methods used for wrinkle reduction. A type of acid solution is applied to the skin under this procedure. It is left long enough for the top layers to become crusted and then peeled off. As a result, the layers of skin underneath are now on the top. They look fresh, smooth, and signs of fine lines will be significantly reduced. However, face peels can be very painful and it does take time to recover from them. There are also chances that your skin will experience some pigment changes in the applied areas.

Micro Dermabrasion is another wrinkle reduction procedure. This process is often pursued by those who have got scars, and want to get rid of them. This process is similar to a chemical peel. However, under this procedure, the face is sanded down. The top layers of skin are sanded off to reveal healthier layers underneath. The procedure can also be painful and s! carring is possible along with pigment changes.

Laser resurfacing is fairly a new wrinkle reduction technique. This is often used to remove both wrinkles and scars. It is very effective but it can also be extremely painful and pigment changes have been noted. If the person performing the procedure isn't experienced enough, then you can suffer from burns, scars, or even an infection. All of these wrinkle reduction procedures are quite costly.

Anti aging skin creams and hand held devices with TripollarTM technology are more affordable 'at-home' option for wrinkle reduction, that doesn't cause any pain and doesn't require downtime. It significantly reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and improves skin texture. Furthermore, it also delivers long-lasting anti-aging results.

Are humans capable of fully comprehending the cosmos?

Posted: 16 Jun 2012 09:00 PM PDT

It's a marvelous quest, our oh-so-human desire to fully understand the mysteries of the cosmos. Dogs don't do this. Chimpanzees don't do this. Dolphins don't do this. (So far as we know.)

Science and religion are alike in this regard: each seeks knowledge, as much as possible.

Scientists aspire to the discovery of a Theory of Everything which encompasses the core laws of nature. Prophets, mystics, gurus, yogis, and other spiritual seekers hope to know the "mind of God," perhaps even becoming it via enlightenment.

Yet there's an egotistical, anthropomorphic, humancentric undercurrent to these attempts to reveal ultimate reality.

We Homo sapiens aren't content with knowing what clearly can be known: the nature of every day existence. We aren't happy with stopping at the boundaries of what can be observed, experimented on, calculated, modeled, analyzed into patterns of causes and effects.

No, by and large members of our species believe that humans can know everything. (Admittedly scientists are less grandiose in this regard than religious believers; still, they're the ones who coined the term "Theory of Everything.")

Given our place in the universe, this seems almost laughable.

Here we are, creatures with a recently-evolved consciousness capable of knowing a lot of stuff, yet a species confined to one planet circling one of hundreds of billions of stars in one of hundreds of billions of galaxies.

And we think we can know it all? Or, know all about the All? Come on... let's get real.

That's what MIT psychologist Steven Pinker does in his book, "How the Mind Works." My wife has been listening to an audio version of the book. Yesterday she played me a concluding section where Pinker talks about religion and humankind's ability to fathom the ultimate mysteries of the cosmos.

I was particularly interested in what Pinker had to say, since in a previous blog post I'd questioned whether we have an ability to know ultimate reality -- which to me entails coming to grips with the essence of existence.

There is nothing more mind-blowing than to ponder the astonishing mystery of "is." Personally, I suspect that the fascination we humans have with the philosophical, religious, and mystical questions surrounding why existence exists is a byproduct of our all-too-human cognitive abilities and brain processes.

A more advanced alien intelligence might look upon the question of "Why is there something rather than nothing?" with a resounding Huh? This is a meaningless question. The answer is obvious. Which, however, we wouldn't be able to understand.

l can't remember the details of what Pinker said on this subject, but it was close enough to what I wrote above for me to stop the audiobook and proudly tell my wife, "Steven Pinker and I think alike!"

Pinker said that evolutionary processes have caused humans to adapt to the conditions here on Earth. For example, our brains are good at discerning cause and effect relationships. "Joe got bit by a snake with diamond markings; he died soon after; I should avoid snakes that look like that."

Also, we have evolved the ability to fathom to a considerable extent the minds of other people. "Jane is frowning; she's angry at me and holding a large stick; turning my back on her right now wouldn't be a good idea."

Put our capacity to comprehend cause and effect relationships together with what is called our theory of mind ability, and you've got a pretty good start on explaining the foundation of religiosity. We're naturally driven to come up with explanations for why this or that happened, and we're naturally driven to attribute mental states akin to our own to other entities (both animate and inanimate).

If these and many other cognitive abilities weren't adaptive, we Homo sapiens wouldn't have evolved to have them as part of the human brain's repertoire. However, Pinker points out there's no reason to think that we possess a capability to know everything about the cosmos.

A vastly superior intelligence might very well look upon our religious, mystical, and philosophical musings about the nature of God, existence, creation, and such in much the same way as adults view a toddler's babbling.

Cute. But way out of touch with reality.

I think that one of our biggest problems is that we don't know what we aren't capable of knowing. After all, how could we? If we knew what we can't know, we'd be halfway to knowing it, since we could take steps to remedy the limitations in our knowledge-gaining capacity.

I'm mildly (maybe majorly) obsessed with grokking the mystery of existence. One of my favorite activities, and I don't even have to be stoned to do this, is pondering why or how anything is. You know, the famous question Why is there something rather than nothing?

I have a marvelous weightless, floating, dizzy, vertigo-inducing feeling when I brush up against the limits of my brain's capacity to comprehend an existence that seemingly has always existed, a seeming effect without any cause, a cosmos containing consciousness seemingly without any mind behind it.

This feeling isn't unique to me.

I suspect what I feel is close to the mind-blowing sensation countless religious seekers, mystic practitioners, and cosmically-minded philosophers have experienced when they pondered similar ultimate questions.

I used to have a strong desire to penetrate the mystery of existence, to know what lies beyond the outer limits of usual human knowing. Such is the dream of youth and middle age: to be a know-it-all. With additional aging, and perhaps a little wisdom, I've come to look upon things differently.

There's a limit to what I, or anyone, can know. We are human beings having a human experience. Yes, we can imagine that we are divine beings temporarily bound by a physical body, capable of understanding ultimate mysteries through a supernatural enlightenment experience.

Well, maybe. But extremely doubtful.

I used to believe that. Now I'm reluctant to devote much of my remaining life to quixotic pursuits -- such as seeking to know what almost certainly can't be known, or to experience what almost certainly can't be experienced.

It's more important for me to become pretty good at dancing West Coast Swing before I die, than to comprehend the meaning of existence. (My bet: there's isn't one.)

Liberation Of Consciousness

Posted: 16 Jun 2012 08:00 PM PDT

Article by Bruce Boyd

There is a particular mantra (word or phrase used during meditation) of which I am very fond: Baba Nam Kevalam. It is written in the sanskrit language and I have heard it translated into English many ways over the years. "God's name only" is a very simple, direct and useful one, but I tend to translate it differently for my yoga students. "Everything is an expression of God" or "Everything is an expression of the supreme consciousness." Whether that is the best translation or not, I can not say, but it works for me, and I believe the statement to be the truth and furthermore that the realization of that truth by a person will result in a dramatic transformation in him/her. A transformation from the "normal" to the sublime, from the tortured to the blissful, from the ignorant to the wise, from the harmful to the benevolent, from the unconscious to the conscious.

Sometimes when I simply reflect on the word "conscious," I become euphoric. It is so simple, yet so liberating to be truly conscious of something, anything. No big mystery. To be "aware" of something is another way of saying it. If I notify my kids that it is snowing outside, they will immediately run to the window to verify the story, and assuming I have told the truth, they will soon become "conscious" of the snow. They run to the window, not because they don't trust me, but because they are hungry for that experience of awareness of the snow. Snow is something they have seen before but only rarely in the rainy area we live in. Yet, it is something they love for many reasons. Snow gives them great joy and they drink in the "vision" from the window. What a blessing it is that holds their attention (another word for consciousness I believe) so firmly. The snow is so white and pure, and it floats so gracefully to the Earth seemingly from Heaven. Ten minutes ago they might have been bickering over a toy they don't even want to play with, but now they are sharing a window as they both witness snow. Their minds are focused, joyful, one wi! th the s now. For my kids, snow is fulfilling the purpose of art, lifting their minds up from their normal existence to a more lofty state.

But what is consciousness? It is something we all have to some extent, some people seem to have more of it than others, and if we get hit on the head too hard, we lose if for a while. But is it something we can cultivate and grow? Can we expand or somehow strengthen our consciousness? I am not talking about the intellect. That is something completely different. That is the computer, the information manipulator, the little puzzle solver. I am talking about consciousness. The consciousness that tells us "I am breathing", "I am cold", "The sun just came up", "I am hungry", "I exist" "You exist" "I have a blissful feeling in my heart."

I propose that we consider consciousness a valuable commodity that can be expanded/developed, and something that can be used to an extent we would never have dreamed possible. Furthermore, I am going to go very far out on a limb now and tell you I believe we can use this "super-consciousness" to revolutionize our personal existence and give us undreamed of powers. Next, I would like to introduce the concept of "intuition". Here is a word we are all familiar with, but not generally in terms of religion. Sadly intuition is thought of as not much more than a lucky hunch here and there, but I think it is a natural albeit undeveloped personal ability, which is both reliable and nothing more than an extension of that day to day "consciousness" that I mentioned above.

So what's the problem? Why aren't we all brimming over with the power of intuition? Because:A. We are drowning in a sea of mental noiseB. There is no "B"

OK, hold on to your hat; this is the way I see it.... Our primary existence is consciousness. Essentially, we are nothing more or less than a pinpoint of pure consciousness. That pinpoint is surrounded by the rest of the cosmos, which I will call "reality." We are the subject, "reality" is the object (signal) we are ! trying t o be "conscious" of, but (for better or worse) in between we have a layer of noise, which I will call the "ego", a fictitious sense of self, a misunderstanding of who we are, and that persistent belief that we are this absurd dream identity is the only thing preventing us from experiencing heaven right here on Earth.

So, how do we get rid of the noise and attain this super consciousness? For want of a better word, let's call it "yoga." Yoga directly translated means "union," similar to the translation of the word "religion" by the way. Yoga promises to unite us with our true nature known in yoga circles as "the Self." The full nature of yoga practice goes way beyond the scope of this short essay, but for the benefit of the novice who may hold the misunderstanding that yoga is merely a set of stretching exercises, I will briefly run over the 8 "limbs" of yoga as originally presented by the great yogi Pantanjali:

1. Yama (a group of 5 morel rules of the road)2. Niyama; some additional guidelines for day to day behavior (study, helping others etc)3. Asanas; the physical exercises that have become popular in the West4. Pranayama; best known as breathing exercises5. Pratyahara; withdrawal from the senses (preliminary to mediation)6. Dharana; concentration exercises (meditation)7. Dhyana; Attention to spiritual phenomena (contemplation)8. Samadhii; Complete absorption in spiritual experience

I highly encourage anyone interested to seek instruction from a qualified instructor. For more information on yoga and the Baba Nam Kevalam mantra, please visit www.babanam.com.
