Vipassana Meditation - Chiselling the Walls of Illusion

More than 2500 years ago, the Great Enlightened Master - Gautama Buddha gave the world a beautiful meditation technique. That wonderful technique of meditation was to form the foundation of Spiritual Enlightenment of hundreds of thousands of meditators throughout the ages. Till this date, the meditation technique that Buddha gave has enlightened more persons than all the other meditation techniques combined together.

Buddha gave the world the meditation technique called Vipassana. "Vipassana" is a Pali word and it means "Pure Watchfulness". It implies watching and observing the reality around us as it is, without any bias whatsoever. Vipassana is also called "Anapansati Yoga". It's the meditation technique that's practised by a majority of the Buddhist meditators.

The technique of Vipassana essentially involves watching the breath and the breathing process. Through this watching, the mind calms, the awareness of the meditator improves dramatically over time. He is able to witness the reality and true nature of things as they are, without any mental bias whatsoever. He comes out of all conditionings and this inner cleansing gives rise to immense tranquillity and bliss.

The Vipassana Meditator is a blissful person and has a great sense of humour. His mental sharpness improves and he is not attached by anything. Life becomes a drama and he enjoys every moment of it. The awareness that arises in the time of meditation gradually spreads to all the activities of the day. This mental focus and dexterity also brings great success and accomplishments to the Vipassana meditator in all the spheres of his life as an added bonus. This success comes as he participates in the activities of his day to day life totally and not partially.

The small but powerful ray of awareness that starts initially from being aware of the breath, gradually spreads into the more subtle realms of the mind like the thoughts, feelings, emotions and the subconscious mind. Hence layers after layers! of the inner mind are peeled gradually and one gets freed of those conditionings. This releases a lot of trapped energy that was entangled in these negative layers of the subconscious mind.

Thus the Vipassana meditator is always in a great state of relaxation and is like a reservoir of energy. His life force is not wasted and leaked in the continuous thought process that goes on always in the ordinary mind uncontrollably. He becomes a true master of himself and his mind. He is able to use it as an equipment rather than being used by it.

In the beginning stages, the meditator needs greater time and silence to get deeper into the Alertness. Witnessing is an art that needs to be learnt gradually. Slowly the mind calms and is not distracted easily. A 10 day meditation retreat is very helpful as it serves as a foundation for the beginner and he gets easily grounded into the watchfulness and learns the knack of Awareness. Then he can practise the meditation and remain watchful uninterrupted even in the most distracting place.

The benefits of Vipassana meditation are numerous. It improves the patience and frees from all vices like addictions and uneasiness. The gains of Vipassana can be felt right from the very first session, but they require regular and continuous practise for the deeper gains to materialize over time. It requires commitment and perseverance on the part of the meditator.

By and by the meditator is able to chisel his way through the illusions of the world and achieve a total clarity. He becomes aware of his own being and true self. He is a true winner and his triumph is beyond words. Vipassana can be done on a standalone basis or can be done along with other meditation techniques, which can greatly enhance the overall results of meditation.

Is Obesity a Disease? Doctors Debate

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 01:00 PM PDT

Obesity puts people at risk for a whole host of conditions, including Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep problems. But is obesity itself a disease?

Doctors are divided on the issue. Some say obesity is indeed a disease, with causes beyond eating too much and exercising too little, and consequences that harm the body like any medical condition. In addition, they say referring to obesity as a disease would improve care for patients, and ensure treatments are covered by insurance plans.

Others argue obesity is a risk factor for health problems, but not a disease itself. They say calling obesity a disease would stigmatize a huge population, and categorize some people as "sick" who actually may be healthy.

"If we call obesity a disease, it would mean automatically, a third of Americans are in a diseased state or sick," said Dr. Pieter Cohen, an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a general internist at Cambridge Health Alliance, referring to the fact that about 35 percent of Americans are obese. "That's absurd," Cohen said.

Last week, the American Medical Association (AMA) took up the question of whether to classify obesity as a disease at a meeting, and decided more research was needed on the topic, deferring the decision to a later date.

"You could make a case for calling it a disease, but right now we're not there," Dr. William Werner, president of the AMA Delegation for Illinois, said of the decision.

However, experts agree that obesity is a critical public health problem, and the medical system needs to change to better manage obese people.

Why some say obesity is a disease

A disease is generally thought of as an abnormal state, or a condition that prevents the body from functioning properly.

During the AMA meeting, doctors pointed out that in some cases, people have underlying abnormalities that cause them to be obese, said Dr. Thomas Madejski, chair of the AMA's committee on medical service, and an internist in Albion, N.Y. For instance, a person's genetic makeup or metabolism could make her body expend fewer calories than other people's bodies, Madejski said.

And once people gain weight, the extra pounds can lead to metabolic and hormonal problems that increase the risk of diseases, said Dr. Scott Kahan, a preventive medicine physician at Johns Hopkins University.

Just as diabetes results from a malfunction of the body's ability to regulate of blood sugar, obesity results from a malfunction of the ability to regulate energy balance, Kahan said.

"It satisfies all the definitions and criteria of what a disease and medical condition is," Kahan told MyHealthNewsDaily. "The one difference is that people who have obesity have to wear their disease on the outside," Kahan said.

There is also concern some insurance companies do not cover obesity treatments, such as weight-loss medications or management programs, because obesity is not considered a disease. The AMA wants to learn more about why this problem happens, and how prevalent it is, Madejski said.

Only a risk factor

Others say that, while obesity is a risk factor for many medical conditions, carrying extra pounds does not destine people to develop those diseases. In fact, some people can be obese and healthy, and live a normal life, Cohen said.

"There's no question that [obesity] is one of the most important public health problems facing America. It's just labeling it as a disease is not going to move us in a positive direction," Cohen said.

Others agreed.

"We did not want to make society more ill overall," by labeling obesity as a disease if that label is not warranted, Madejski said.

Obese people may also be stigmatized, or may suffer psychological consequences if they are labeled as having a disease, Madejski said.

However, Kahan said referring to obesity as a disease may actually remove some of its stigma, because it could highlight the fact that obesity is not necessarily caused by a lack of willpower.

Improving care

Regardless of whether obesity is referred to as a disease, the care of obese patients needs improvement, experts said.

For instance, medical schools should change the way they teach students so they are better able to treat obese patients, Kahan said.

"When people get care, they get a lot of finger-wagging," and advice to "eat this, not that," Kahan said. But obesity is a much more complex problem, Kahan said.

Obese patients should also be able to visit doctors who specialize in the condition.

"If you have diabetes or any other medical disorder … you would be treated by people with appropriate background to help you," Kahan said.

Pass it on:  Doctors are split on whether obesity should be considered a disease.

7 Steps to a Prosperity Consciouness

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 10:00 AM PDT

Article by DJ Britton

How can we attract the abundance that so many are seeking? To be abundantly supplied for all that we need means we can enjoy loving relationships, a beautiful home, travel, and whatever supports the attainment of our purpose or life's work. The process we use to access this Universal or Devine Energy is by understanding how it works and what we need to do to open ourselves to this creative and nurturing power. This can be called having a prosperity consciousness.

A prosperity consciousness means that you not only believe but know with certainty, there is an unlimited supply of love, happiness, intelligence, and prosperity available to everyone, but it is us as the individual who must ask for and receive this abundance. The source of this abundance is Devine and we also know that whatever we have or will have must come from this Absolute, Complete, All-powerful, All-knowing, source of intelligence.

Because we are part of the Universe, we are already drawing whatever we need from this Divine Intelligence, but can learn to consciously direct the flow of this power through our lives, as we choose. A person who possesses a prosperity consciousness knows, beyond a shadow of a doubt that there is: an abundance of love, happiness, ideas, money, time, energy, wisdom, and opportunities flowing through their mind and heart from this One Source. They think: "I will always prosper and have the money I need." "I will achieve my goals." 'Whatever I need is coming to me now." "I am drawing intelligence, ideas, and solutions from Infinite Mind, which is flowing through my individual mind."

The person with a prosperity consciousness is a positive thinker, never defeated mentally, and persists until he or she obtains the goal. If limitation or lack appears, a person with a prosperity consciousness does not accept the appearance as the absolute truth, but sees it as a temporary situation, which will change as he or she changes their thoughts, words and actions. They know that where there is a will! , there is definitely a way.

7 Steps to Building your Prosperity Consciousness

1. Build a support system for yourself including: taking classes on spirituality, prosperity, and the principles of successful living. Read books, have empowering friendships, and listen to CD's on spirituality, success, and prosperity. Train yourself to think and speak positive words and maintain a positive, prosperous, and enthusiastic attitude. Use the principles of repetition and affirmation to re-program your subconscious mind. 2. Tune into your inner voice. Some people pray, others meditate; others still enjoy walks in nature. Whatever works for you, use it to quieten your mind and ask for guidance. 3. Give up anger, resentment, or envy for others, as these stop the flow of divine energy. Making others wrong and you right, criticizing others as well as yourself, and lamenting your mistakes or losses, all stop the flow. 4. Associate with high-minded, generous, & spiritually-conscious people. Avoid or limit your contact with those who sap your metal or spiritual energy. Avoid watching or reading negative news.5. Think and behave as the person you desire to become. Have good posture, a happy face, dress smartly, be clean, and look prosperous and attractive at all times. Act as if and you are. 6. Set goals that will help you achieve your purpose and mission. Find out what others, who have achieved what you want to achieve, did to get where they are. Model their system. Give up procrastination & do it now. 7. Collect as many friends and allies as you can and help them, as they will also help you. Build your network of trusted, skilled, and cooperative members. Your 'Mastermind' alliance will encourage and provide ideas to everyone in the group.

Success leaves clues. By observing and modelling the actions and thinking of those to which we aspire we will surely follow in their footsteps.

How To Be Smart

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 10:00 AM PDT

Thinker
Too many people think that intelligence is a gift of nature and that there is little anyone can do to improve theirs. IQ tests have managed to confuse many of us, leading us to believe that intelligence is largely fixed. It is not.

Just like swimming, cooking, dancing, and just about anything else, being smart is a skill that requires training. Unfortunately, our schools neglect to give us some of the most essential tools for being smart.

So how did I discover these tools? It happened when I started working on my PhD. I didn't just want to do just any kind of research, I wanted to do research that mattered. The problem was that I had no idea how to do research, never mind research that mattered. So, I decided to try and understand professors that did important work. For years, I watched and I learned, and I am proud to say that I figured it out – and it wasn't what I expected.

Because I figured it out, I was able to produce about four times the amount of work required to complete a PhD and still spend a lot of time with my family, friends, and on my hobbies. I will now share with you some of what I learned.

Practice Self-Critical Thinking
We are all familiar with critical thinking, the act of questioning the assumptions of arguments that are put before us. Critical thinking is an invaluable skill – without it, we all become gullible and easily manipulated. The problems is that, we usually only apply critical thinking to other people's ideas. When we apply critical thinking to our own ideas, its power reaches a whole new level. I call this self-critical thinking. Once you find a flaw with your argument, see if you can come up with a better idea. If you practice sel! f-critic al thinking, then you will find flaws in your arguments before anyone else. By practicing self-critical thinking, your intellect will amaze you.

Be Persistent
Smart, successful people don't give up. They believe that they can do it, and so they keep trying until, finally, they succeed. You might know that Thomas Edison failed thousands of times before he succeeded. What you might not know is that just about all scientists experience failure on a regular basis. They spend months, even years, trying to find answers, until finally something works out. So if you want to be smart, be persistent.

Learn to Present Your Ideas
Two people can have the same ideas, and the same views and opinions, and yet only one of them might be considered smart. We often forget that everyone is busy with their own lives; they don't have time to think about and analyze everything we say. If we don't sell our ideas, virtually no one will recognize their merit. So, if you want others to know that you're smart, learn how to present your ideas.  Speak clearly, articulate your words, and most importantly, let your enthusiasm about your ideas shine through. Enthusiasm is highly contagious. Some of the most brilliant scientists spend half, yes, half, their time on presentation. If they find it worthwhile, so should you. Finally, learning to sell your ideas is not only good for your reputation, but it also can help others. If you have something to say, say it well, so that others can benefit from your message.

Finally, let me add that in order to be smart, you must also believe in yourself. We are all a lot more similar than we appear. Those who appear smarter than you simply had the rights tools and used these tools to exercise their minds. Exceptional intelligence is well within your reach.

You are smarter than you think.

5 Tips to Help You Meditate

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 09:00 AM PDT

Article by Jay Franco

Meditation has been proven to have significant benefits. Regular meditation can help you reduce stress, sleep better, and be more spiritually aware. Some people find it hard to start a regular meditation practice though because most people are running around busily all day long and don't usually take time to sit down and relax. But if you really want to improve your health and manage your stress you need to make it a priority to start meditating regularly. These tips can help you make meditation a regular part of your life:

1. Schedule a time to meditate - If you tell yourself that you will get around to meditating after the kids are in bed or that you'll get up early and meditate before work chances are good that you won't actually do it. You need to schedule a time to meditate the same way that you would schedule a doctor's appointment or other commitment. You are making a commitment to yourself and your health. So set aside a block of time, even if it's just 15 minutes, during the day when you can meditate.

2. Go slowly - When you're used to running around all the time and not used to sitting still and quieting your mind and body it can be difficult to do. So don't force yourself to meditate for long periods of time at the beginning of your meditation practice. Start by just closing you eyes and breathing deeply for a minute or two. Then go to five minutes. Then try 10 minutes. Build up the amount of time that you meditate slowly and let your body get used it.

3. Let go of your conscious thoughts - When you are trying to meditate and you find yourself thinking about all the tasks you have left to do that day or wondering if you remembered to pay the phone bill don't focus on those thoughts. Take a deep breath and just let them go. If you start focusing on those thoughts instead of meditating you will break your concentration.

4. Create a special place to meditate - This can be something as elaborate as an entire room set aside just for meditation or it can be as simpl! e as a s pecial shelf in a closet holding a special candle that you sit in front of. No matter how little space you think you have you can carve out a little niche for yourself that will be your special place to relax.

5. Use props to help you meditate - You can't force yourself to sit and relax, but you can use props that will help you relax and mediate. Buy a special scented candle that you burn only during meditation. Light some incense. Buy a plant that you love and keep it in your meditation space. Turn on some music that you find very soothing and relaxing.

Venus Lakshmi Shukra Mantra Invocation

This is a traditional, Puranic, mantra invocation to awaken the energies represented by the planet Venus--or Shukra, in the Vedic Astrological system. A Vedic astrologer would have you chant this planetary mantra to strengthen the good aspects of the force, and weaken any negative aspects preventing the blossoming of the planets full potential. The image of the male in front of the horse, and sitting in meditation, is Shukra, who represents the planet Venus; however, Goddess Lakshmi is the more universally accessible, all-encompassing Deity-Essence to contact while chanting or listening to this Mantra. The Goddess Lakshmi, embodies love, soul-mates, wealth, happy family, harmony, song, dance, poetry and beauty. Her images, including her Yantras (the geometrical meditation form of the deity) are also shown. Included as well are Western images of the Lakshmi-Essence: ie Venus and Aphrodite, to demonstrate the universality of Venus energy. I pray that this video will be a meditation to remove any negative karma that may be preventing you from enjoying the blessings of true love, beauty, wealth, happy family and home! This Mantra is available, along with many other mantra-invocations on the CD, "Mantra Darshan." Available here: www.klaritymusic.com This CD is not for easy listening, but a meditation tool to take one deeply into the essences of the causal plane and purify it from limiting samskaras (karmic patterns). Yoga Meditation to Free the Mind

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 07:00 AM PDT

Article by Daveopton

Yoga and meditation are two useful practices that balance each other and, when skillful together, expand the practitioner's occurrence. The word Yoga means "unification," a state which occurs when the body and mind are in concord. For this to occur, the mind must be at a standstill.

There are several kinds of meditation, but meditation (concentration), on a function, is a good place to start. Deliberation can be thought of as the ability to put the intelligence on one thing and leave it there. To begin concentration meditation, watch the breath go in and out at one point in the body, and count to ten breaths. Many thoughts will come into your brain and disturb you, but if you can get to ten, you are doing healthy.

A variety of different relaxation techniques can help you bring your nervous system back into balance by producing the relaxation response. The relaxation response is not lying on the couch or sleeping but a mentally active process that leaves the body relaxed, calm, and focused.

There is no single relaxation technique that is best for everyone. When choosing a relaxation technique, consider your specific needs, preferences, fitness level, and the way you tend to react to stress. The right relaxation technique is the one that resonates with you, fits your lifestyle, and is able to focus your mind and interrupt your everyday thoughts in order to elicit the relaxation response. The first and most important thing is to find a place where there are no outside disturbances. You have to know the correct posture to adopt so its best if you practice yoga meditation under a professional at least in the beginning till you are able to do it properly on your own. Once you have the place and the posture, then find a point on which to fix your mind.

Yoga meditation is not easy nor is it simple. One has to be prepared physically and mentally for the conditioning that it is going to provide to your mind. It means freedom from material connections and one has to be strong-minded eno! ugh to g o through with it.In order for meditation to take place, the mind must be willing to look at itself. When the collective consciousness of a society meditates on a regular basis, it will be reflected by peaceful behavior.

Yoga Meditation is a wonderful resource for mankind because it can bring the mind to a state of peace with itself. A global society, which has an addiction to multi-tasking, needs time to "unplug" itself, and Yoga meditation offers realistic solutions.

The shaman and Buddhism

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Being raised in a modern household is hardly an advantage for a proper understanding of Buddhism.  I was lucky, I grew up in a family in which my father's best friend was a Mexican shaman.  His name was Jesse and he was the real thing.  He worked as a grounds keeper at the University of the Pacific in California.  Students who were stressed out would often go to him.  He would take their pain away just by talking to them.  Within a few seconds, they became very peaceful often just standing in front of Jesse with their eyes closed.

Being a shaman wasn't all that good for Jesse.  He was often torn between his duty to mow lawns or help students who came to him.  It eventually cost him his job because more and more of the students at the university followed him around, seeking his help.  This didn't set well with administration.  The last time I saw him, there was no less than a dozen students sitting on the grass, swaying back and forth in bliss, in front of Jesse.  As I passed behind the students, Jesse and I both smiled at each other.  That was the last time I saw Jesse.  It was my friend John who later informed me that Jesse had been fired.  This was over forty years ago.

The word 'spirit' was a word commonly used in my family.  I would often see my father and Jesse quietly sitting together in the kitchen during the 1950s, when I was going to elementary school.  Several times I was asked to come into the kitchen.  Jesse would just look at me, then I was asked to leave.

When I decided to become a Zen priest, I already understood that a spiritual transformation was supposed to happen.  I never doubted it because I understood, even as a small boy, that our spiritual being is the most important thing in the world.  I also understood that if I were to master Buddhism I would be called to do so by powerful spiritual omens.  This was later confirmed when I saw the Lankavatara Sutra glowing with a strange light much like aurora borealis only smaller.  I kept rubbing my eyes.  I thought there was something wrong with them.  It didn't help.  So I decided to look at this phenomenon from different angles of the room.  But the light continued to radiate from the book on my desk.  I knew then I was to make this Sutra my study.  I could hardly understand a word of this profound Sutra.  But I grew to have more and more faith in its words which were affirmed every time I came to a profound realization during my many meditations.

In a way, one has to have the heart of a shaman to fully understand Buddhism.  To be sure, one has to renounce Western nihilism which is centered on materialism and the accumulation of wealth.  Yes, the spiritual world is real.  Anyone who says it is not can never really know Buddhism.

Guided Meditation For Optimum Benefits Of Meditation

Posted: 27 Jun 2012 04:00 AM PDT

Article by Dr. Rose Windale

A lot of people are familiar with the concept of meditation and its tremendous benefits. A lot of people know a lot, but perhaps not enough as even though there may be books or CD's or magazines to get information from, determining the right technique or approach that will suit you is not that simple. Deciding to do meditation on your own will most likely be disappointing as you may not attain the results that you desire. If you choose this path, there is a possibility that you will eventually be disheartened and frustrated. This article does not mean to antagonize meditation.

It only has to do with the considerable possibility that if you do it on your own, there are less chances for you to be satisfied. Meditation works for anybody. But the thing is, to get the optimum benefits from meditation, you need to have the right teacher, one that will constantly be behind you to ensure that you get the best out of meditation. Guided meditation may well be the best option that you can take. Considering the vast sources of information out there about the basic principles, practices and philosophies of meditation, it may seem that you are standing before a hundred crossroads.

Chances are that you will take the wrong path despite all the information you have acquired. Neither will joining a group prove completely effective. Most likely, you will not entirely grasp the essence of the whole procedure as you are not individually taught. Guided meditation by far is the best choice that you can make. The first thing to do when you decide to go for guided meditation is to find a teacher that would willingly work with you on an individual basis. In this approach that you opt to take, be sure that the teacher wants to modify his/her program to cater to your personal needs and help you go from there.

Consider these guidelines before you decide to take the path of guided meditation: 1. What do you want to achieve from meditation? Be specific about your goals. 2. What is the suitable guided medit! ation co urse or program for you? 3. Confer with the teachers of guided meditation. Inquire about a program that will cater to your needs. 4. Ask about the duration of the guided meditation course as well as its cost. Consider, too, the guarantees and if there is a refund policy. 5. Find out of the guided meditation course provides continuous and ongoing support and guidance. See to it that your teacher will work with you to ensure that you get the results that you desire and deserve.

It is more than just a set of exercises for you and then to just leave it at that. Furthermore, make sure that guidance and support will go on as part of the guided meditation program for you to progress in the future. Paying for a guided meditation course is paying for a service. And if you are not satisfied, say so and expect to get a refund of your payment. An effective guided meditation teacher should be capable and confident of his/her capacity to give you the benefits that you expect from meditation. It's totally out of the question when somebody says "It's all up to you".

Hoa Lu and Tam Coc, an Essential Option From the Capital City of Hanoi, Vietnam

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 11:00 PM PDT

Article by Lanvht

Founded after the coronation of Dinh Tien Hoang, Hoa Lu was the first capital of a central feudalized state in Vietnam. This court was home to three consecutive monarchies: the Dinh, pre-Le and Ly

Vietnam' history of national foundation and preservation has spanned over 4000 years and resulted in different political centers, ranging from the original Phong Chau capital of the Hung kings to Thang Long - Hanoi. Among the nation's past and present capitals, Hoa Lu remains in our thoughts, not due to colossal ruin or lost palaces, but because, after prolonged Han colonization, it was the site of a long and proud era of splendid independence.

Founded after the coronation of Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang, Hoa Lu was the first capital of a centralized feudal stare in Vietnam. It was home to three consecutive dynasties, namely the Dinh, pre-Le and Ly. Its integral role was undeniable until Thang Long was chosen as the next strategic political center at the behest of Emperor Ly Cong Uan. Nowadays, Hoa Lu draws tourists and pilgrims who view it as a sacred place, an ancient cultural cradle and as a tourist site that offers breath taking natural beauty. Surrounded by mountain ranges and crystal streams visitors will find mausoleums, peaceful huts and a complex of Dinh - Le Temples where mysterious historical and cultural relics are still waiting to be unearthed.

While the Eastern Gate of Hoa Lu's formal citadel is a late structure, its carving patterns and three-tiered roofs seem to hint at the gigantic scale of the long done citadel. On its green marble surface the gate features carving patterns that are unique to Ninh Binh. After 1000 years of chaos and destruction, key structures in Hoa Lu have all vanished. During the foundation of Thanh Long as the capital, Ly Cong Uan ordered most palaces. Pavilions and military outpost in Hoag Lu to be relocated to Thanh Long

Fortunately, some religious temples and archeological sites remain to help us to decipher the layout of the citadel. Dinh Temp! le and L e Temple, which are dedicated to Dinh Tien Hoang and the Pre-Le Emperors, are here to stay. Despite successive restorations they retain their original architecture. The building of these tow structures got underway in the Ly dynasty. They were then rebuilt in the Post-Le dynasty. Small and humble, these temples remind us of ancient palaces. After each gate is a separate space to eventually lead us to the Forbidden Palace, where the altar of the Le Emperors stand. Meanwhile, Dinh Tien Hoang temple is a unique example of 17th century wooden Vietnamese Architecture. The treasures in Dinh Tien Hoang Temple include brinks bearing the words: "the Citadel

Of Dai Viet's Emperor" pillars carved with Buddhist scripture in Sanskrit, and stone steles. A witness of the nation's sovereignty and a solemn religious site, the temple also earns visitors 'admiration thanks to the exquisite sculptures on its wooden columns. A testament to the artistry of Vietnam's ancient wood carvers, similar carvings can unfortunately only be found in a handful of other architectural structures.

Le Dai Hanh Temple stands 300m from Dinh Tien Hoang Temple. Its smaller scale makes the interior feel more mysterious. The unique feature of this temple is its sophisticated and refined wood sculptures, which date from the 17th century.

Many generations of painters have visited and learned from this temple. According to legend, Le Dai Hanh's mother dimly saw lotuses in a dream and gave birth to her son while working on a lotus pond. As a result, within the temple lies a small lotus pond. On the ceiling beams and pillars, carpenters portrayed old legends about the genial Emperor Le Dai Hanh.

Although there are many structures in this complex, the two temples of the Dinh and Le Emperors draw the most attention due to their beauty and well-preserved relics. Within the complex of the former citadel, ancient pagodas such as Ba Ngo, Co Am and am Tien still house Buddhist relics, some of which date back to the 10th century. Dinh T! ien Hoan g was the first monarch to establish ranks for Buddhist monks and install the first national Lama, namely Khuong Viet. Interestingly, during that time a remarkable number of pagodas were built inside limestone grottos, or leaning against mountains. Typical cavern pagodas include Hoa Son, Thien Ton, Bich Dong, Dich Long, Bai Dinh and Linh Coc.

The Yen Thanh Communal House, which is located near Le Dai Hanh temple, was built by the emperor to propagate Buddhism. Its pillars inscribed with Buddhist scripture remain intact after 1000 years: They are the oldest stone scriptures in Vietnam.

Bai Dinh pagoda consists of one original pavilion and one newly built pavilion with an altar dedicated to Saint Nguyen, a lit grotto for Buddha, a dark grotto for the Fairies and a temple for the God Cao Son. The complex of Bai Dinh Pagoda is set in a central position according to traditional beliefs, which view it as the "Homeland of Emperor, Saints and Gods". Bai Dinh is now the largest pagoda in Southeast Asia.

Hoa Lu is a forceful reminder of the Vietnamese people's prowess. It serves as tangible witnesses of the independence of the Dai Co Viet State, which has always endured in our hearts.

Uncertainty: the key to dealing with death and non-existence

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 11:00 PM PDT

Last night I had another of my Holy shit! I'm going to die and not exist forever! moments. I wrote about these disturbing experiences six years ago in "Death and the primal fear of non-existence."

I've come face to face with not-existing. It's scary. Really scary. I've never experienced anything scarier. I can call it "fear," but it's more than that. Worse than that. Regular fear arises when something bad is happening or could happen.

But primal fear is looking into the maw of nothing happening to you, because there will be no you around for anything to happen to. Do you get the difference? I hope so. I don't know if I can describe it any more clearly.

This experience has come to me about a dozen times. Mostly while I'm going to sleep. Occasionally in meditation. It isn't something that I can bring about on my own. It isn't a thought; it isn't an emotion; it isn't a perception. It's as if a curtain covering non-existence opens for a moment, giving me a peek into a nothingness that is absolute.

Because I'm not there. I mean, I'm obviously there at the moment, looking into the depths of not-existing for eternity. Yet what I feel all the way down to the marrow of my being is what it means to live for a time and then to not live for all the rest of time.

This time it was a turtle's fault.

The 11 o'clock local news had a segment about a large sea turtle that washed ashore, looking decidedly dead. But it wasn't. If I recall correctly, a CT scan was used to look through the turtle's shell and figure out what was wrong with it.

Unbidden and uncontrollably, one of those Holy shit! realizations washed over me as the news team went on to another story.

I'm going to die eventually. Just like the turtle is. No more living. No more anything. This life is it. All there will ever be. No matter how much I love life, no matter how much I want to keep on living, death is going to throw me into non-existence. Forever. Me gone. All gone. For eternity.

Not exactly cheery bedtime thoughts. As I was brushing my teeth, the unfairness of it all seemed so obvious.

Here I am, alive. I'm a human being who can envision his own death. I enjoy life, but it's slipping away by the day, the hour, the minute, the second. I'm 63 fucking years old! My lifelong experiencing of one-thing-after-the-other is going to come to an abrupt halt with a final thing: the instant of my death. After that... nothing. Not even the awareness of nothing.

After waking up this morning, I felt pretty much normal again. Aware of death, of course, yet immersed in the living of life. Thankfully. But the primal fear I'd experienced last night was still lingering closer to the surface of my consciousness than it usually is.

Throughout the day I kept thinking...

About how religious people are able to easily envision an afterlife that isn't a viable post-death reassurance for me anymore. About how illogical my fear of non-existence is, since there's as little reason to worry about not existing as there is of falling into deep sleep: if I'm unconscious, there's no fear, no worry, no anything.

It dawned on me that (1) not being afraid of dying because of a certainty about life after death has a lot in common with (2) being afraid of dying because of a certainty about non-existence after death. The commmonality is... certainty.

Of course, the odds are with (2), non-existence. Billions upon billions of humans have died with no sign of their continued existence. Evidence of life after death is extremely meager, almost, well, non-existent.

Still, anything is possible. Since no one knows what lies on the other side of death, there's room for uncertainty. (See my "Scientific quasi-remedies for a fear of death.")

Believers in life after death don't know that for sure. Believers in non-existence after death don't know that for sure. Nobody knows! Nobody. Not with certainty. And therein lies a viable way of dealing with death: acknowledge that it's an unknown, and focus on the known. Living, here and now.

This morning I was drawn to read a few chapters in Pema Chodron's "The Places That Scare You: A Guide to Fearlessness in Difficult Times." Often I'm turned off by Zen books that are overly Stress Reduction'y, edging into dogmatic religiosity. But I liked what Chodon said about The In-Between State.

It takes some training to equate complete letting-go with comfort. But in fact "nothing to hold on to" is the root of happiness. There's a sense of freedom when we accept that we're not in control. Pointing ourselves toward what we would most like to avoid makes our barriers and shields permeable.

This may lead to a don't-know-what-to-do kind of feeling, a sense of being caught in-between. On the one hand, we're completely fed up with seeking comfort from what we can eat, drink, smoke, or couple with. We're also fed up with beliefs, ideas, and "isms" of all kinds. But on the other hand we wish it were true that outer comfort could bring lasting happiness.

...When we find ourselves in a place of discomfort and fear, when we're in a dispute, when the doctor says we need tests to see what's wrong, we'll find that we want to blame, to take sides, to stand our ground. We feel we must have some resolution. We want to hold our familiar view.

...That's why we're encouraged to spend our whole lives training with uncertainty, ambiguity, insecurity. To stay in the middle prepares us to meet the unknown without fear; it prepares us to face both our life and our death.

...We gradually discover that we are big enough to hold something that is neither lie nor truth, neither pure nor impure, neither bad nor good. But first we have to appreciate the richness of the groundless state and hang in there.

...Resting here completely -- steadfastly experiencing the clarity of the present moment -- is called enlightenment.

Women Who Fear Childbirth Have Longer Labor

Don't let this scare you, but labor takes 47 minutes longer for women who fear childbirth, a new study from Norway finds.

The study, which involved more than 2,000 women, was one of the first to look at the relationship between fear of childbirth and labor duration, the researchers said.

It's too soon to say exactly what the findings mean for women, the researchers said. Generally, longer labor is undesirable because, aside from increasing women's discomfort, it also increases the need for interventions such as the use of forceps or cesarean delivery.

However, a large portion of women in the study who feared labor had a successful vaginal delivery, said study researcher Dr. Samantha Salvesen Adams, of Akershus University Hospital. "Therefore, elective cesarean delivery should not be routinely recommended," Adams said.

Adams and colleagues analyzed information from 2206 pregnant women who were scheduled to give birth at a hospital in Norway between 2008 and 2010. At 32 weeks of pregnancy, women completed a questionnaire to assess their fear of childbirth.

About 7.5 percent of women met the criteria for having a fear of childbirth (a score of 85 out of 165 points in the questionnaire.)

The average duration of labor was eight hours for women with fear of childbirth, compared with six hours and 28 minutes for women without fear.

After adjusting for factors that could affect the length of labor, such as previous pregnancies, use of an epidural, or labor induction, women with a fear of childbirth still took about 47 minutes longer to give birth compared to women without fear, the researchers said.

The study also found that women with fear of childbirth more often delivered by instrumental vaginal delivery (17 percent versus 10.6 percent), or emergency cesarean delivery (10.9 percent versus 6.8 percent) as compared to women without fear of childbirth.

However, 93.2 percent of women who feared childbirth had a vaginal delivery as planned, compared with 89.1 percent of women with no fear.

Anxiety and fear may increase blood concentrations of hormones called catecholamines, which in turn may weaken the ability of the uterus to contract, the researchers said.

In addition, poor communication between the patient and her doctor may delay the use of interventions, and prolong labor, the researchers said.

Counseling for concerns with pregnancy may improve communication skills and reduce anxiety. Therefore, such counseling is beneficial for women who fear childbirth, the researchers said.

The study will be published tomorrow (June 27) in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Pass it on:  Women who fear labor spend longer in childbirth.
